A Private legal practitioner and Director of Legal Affairs for the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC), Godwin Edudzi Tameklo, has cautioned that the High Court risks creating “constitutional chaos” if it entertains the judicial review application filed by former Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo.
Torkornoo has petitioned the High Court to overturn her dismissal and halt the appointment and vetting of a new Chief Justice.
Speaking on TV3’s The KeyPoints on Saturday, October 18, 2025, Tameklo argued that the court has no jurisdiction to intervene in an already concluded constitutional process.
“In this particular case, the President acted on the recommendation of the investigative committee and lawfully issued a warrant of removal.
A replacement has already been nominated and awaits parliamentary vetting.
Intervening at this stage would disrupt an ongoing constitutional process,” he explained.
He warned that allowing the case to proceed could “distort the constitutional order,” stressing that governance is “serious business” and not a platform for legal experimentation.
“A High Court intervention has the tendency to bring chaos.
The Constitution should not be manipulated in any way that results in recklessness or disorder,” Tameklo stated.
Describing the judicial review application as “weak and fundamentally flawed,” he said it “stands no chance” of success.
According to him, proceedings under Article 146 of the 1992 Constitution which governs the removal of superior court judges are sui generis (unique in nature) and are intended to be conducted discreetly to preserve institutional stability.
“If the High Court allows this application, matters meant to be heard in camera under Article 146 will now be debated openly, undermining the constitutional framework,” he warned.
On October 17, Torkornoo filed a suit at the High Court seeking to halt the vetting and appointment of Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie as Chief Justice and to nullify the findings of the committee that led to her removal by President John Dramani Mahama on September 1, 2025.

The Secretary-General of the Ghana Federation of Labour (GFL), Abraham Koomson, has rejected New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer hopeful Dr. Bryan Acheampong’s call for the government to suspend all mining activities across the country for 90 days.
According to Koomson, the NPP—under whose administration Dr Acheampong served as a Cabinet Minister had eight years in power yet failed to effectively tackle the menace of illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey.
He questioned the sincerity of Dr Acheampong’s proposal, arguing that it was misplaced for a former Minister in the previous government to demand immediate action from a new administration that has only recently assumed office.
Dr Acheampong, while addressing the media at his campaign office on Wednesday, October 15, 2025, proposed a 90-day nationwide suspension of mining operations to enable the restoration of Ghana’s polluted water bodies and protect the environment, food systems, and water security.
He explained that his call was not for a declaration of a state of emergency but a temporary national intervention to allow for environmental recovery.
However, reacting to the comments on Ahotor FM’s “Yepe Ahunu” show on Saturday, October 18, Koomson described the remarks as hypocritical and insincere, saying they should not be taken seriously.
“The NPP was in power for eight years and did little to stop galamsey.
It is unfair and hypocritical for Bryan Acheampong to now turn around and demand that this new government suspend mining operations,” he stated.
Koomson further urged President John Dramani Mahama to remain focused on his development agenda and not be distracted by political commentary from opposition figures.
“The President must stay focused and deliver on his promises.

President of IMANI Africa, Franklin Cudjoe, has urged Alan Kyerematen to return to his roots in enterprise development as a defining feature of his political message if he hopes to make a strong impact with his newly rebranded movement, the United Party (UP Plus).
Speaking on The Big Issue on Channel One TV on Saturday, October 18, following the launch of UP Plus, Cudjoe said Kyerematen’s long-standing association with entrepreneurship and private sector advocacy could uniquely appeal to ordinary Ghanaians — provided it is communicated with clarity and purpose.
“If Alan stays the course of understanding that his first love was enterprise, and he could turn that into something sellable… If Alan could reorient his message around building businesses and say, ‘I am here for you, the ordinary person. I am here to give you the opportunity and teach the skills to help you save a little more,’ then that could work,” Cudjoe said.
He added that Kyerematen’s campaign would connect more effectively with voters if it shifted away from purely political rhetoric toward practical empowerment and wealth creation.
“If he takes that and says, ‘I want to be the enterprise guy, and I want you to build your own prosperity,’ then that’s a compelling message,” Cudjoe noted. “If Alan is able to move that message away from just saying ‘become members,’ then he can have a clear path.”

Residents of Sokode Agbogame and Akrofu in the Ho Municipality are grappling with severe transportation challenges following the collapse of a crucial bridge about four months ago.

The vital bridge, which connects the two communities, remains unusable despite initial repair efforts by a contractor who has since abandoned the site.
According to Forgive Kwamla Segbedeku, the Assembly Member for the Akrofu Electoral Area, the bridge’s culverts gave way after heavy downpours in June and July.
“In June or July, there was heavy rainfall, which led to the collapse of the bridge’s culverts. I immediately informed our
Ho Municipal MCE about the development, and we both visited the Roads and Highways Authority to request urgent assistance because the incident completely cut us off from Sokode and Ho. Segbedeku told YEN.com.gh.”
Authorities, however, responded by awarding a contract for the bridge’s repairs.
“The necessary authorities stepped in, and the contract was awarded.
The contractor completed one of the two culverts but couldn’t finish the second one before leaving the site about a month ago,” the Assembly Member added, expressing frustration over the stalled project, so, I informed
the MCE about the halt in the repair works. He, together with some officials from Urban Roads, visited the site and told me they would appeal to the contractor to return and continue the project.”
Residents face soaring commute costs
The prolonged closure of the bridge has forced residents to seek alternative, longer, and more expensive routes, significantly impacting their daily lives and economic activities.
The bridge served as the main route for many community members.
“It is the main route we use for our daily rounds. Students, drivers, workers, everyone uses this road,” explained Togbe Korsi Dzanku VI, Chief of the Akrofu Traditional Area. The situation has made commuting to neighbouring towns such as Agbogame and Ho a long journey, as one now has to use a very costly alternative route,” the traditional ruler stated from Agbogame to Akrofu used to cost GHS 6, but now commuters pay GHS 15 because they have to pass through Ho. Pillion riders also used to charge GHS 10, but now take GHS 20.”
Agitation and calls for immediate action
Mounting frustrations among residents are reaching a boiling point, with growing calls for immediate intervention from local authorities.
It has become a major problem for them, and residents are now losing their patience.
Some residents have said that if the bridge is not fixed soon, they will demonstrate to demand immediate action from the Assembly.

Two months of darkness frustrate Hawui residents
Earlier, YEN.com.gh reported that the Hawui community in South Tongu was left in darkness for two months after a power outage that affected over 1,000 residents.
Multiple vehicles, including a wheel loader and a tipper truck, got stuck in the mud during efforts to restore power.
A repaired transformer later failed again, leaving the community uncertain about when electricity would be restored.
A coalition of youth, elders, and concerned members of the Resurrection Power New Generation Church (RPNGC) has called for sweeping reforms and transparent governance following the passing of the church’s founder, Rev Dr Anthony Kwadwo Boakye, in February 2023.
At a press conference addressed by Bright Asare Sampson, convener of the group, the members expressed deep concern over what they described as “leadership failures, financial irregularities and administrative abuse” that have disrupted peace and unity within the church.
The group accused four executives, John Kofi Boateng (Secretary), Linda Naa Odorley (Deputy Secretary), Benjamin Boakye, and Jennifer Boakye of alleged embezzlement, mismanagement and disregard for the church’s constitution.
They are therefore calling for their immediate suspension pending an independent investigation.
In a detailed press statement, the group explained that their actions were not rebellious but a necessary step to “protect the spiritual and moral legacy” of their late founder.
They cited several grievances, including:
Failure to present audited financial reports despite repeated requests.
Unauthorised withdrawals and unexplained transactions.
Intimidation and alleged arrests of members demanding transparency.
Disregard for established church structures and elder authority.
Decline in unity and spiritual discipline within the congregation.
“We seek nothing more and nothing less than truth, transparency, and responsible stewardship in the management of the church’s affairs.”
“The Resurrection Power New Generation Church is not the possession of any individual or group, but the sacred Body of Christ governed by Scripture and the Church’s Constitution.”
The group outlined several key demands aimed at restoring order and trust within the church, including:
An independent forensic audit of all church finances from 2023–2025.
Suspension of the accused executives pending the outcome of investigations.
Restoration of the Elders’ Offices and their full constitutional authority.
Formation of an Independent Investigative Committee, including youth, women, and fellowship leaders.
Democratic elections within six months to establish legitimate leadership.
An end to harassment and intimidation of members advocating for accountability.
They further called for the active inclusion of youth and women in church governance, arguing that genuine revival and growth depend on the participation of every member of the Body of Christ.
The group condemned alleged arrests of protesting members and appealed to the Ghana Police Service to ensure security at church premises while the internal disputes are resolved.
They emphasised their commitment to peace, unity, and lawful dialogue throughout the reform process.
Drawing inspiration from scripture, the group urged all members to remain steadfast in faith and prayerful, emphasising that their struggle was spiritual rather than political.
They proposed the creation of an Interim Reform Committee to oversee administrative duties during investigations, publication of audited accounts within 90 days, and open financial reporting at board and congregational meetings.
“Through unity, prayer, and accountability, we believe the Resurrection Power New Generation Church will rise stronger and truer to its divine foundation.”

Prophet El-Bernard Nelson-Eshun says Ghana’s next Vice President will be a female from Parliament
A video of a prophecy made by Prophet Bernard El-Bernard Nelson-Eshun, Senior Pastor of Spiritlife Revival Ministries, has emerged, in which he spoke about the person who would take over from Prof Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang as the Vice President of Ghana.
In the said prophecy, which was made in early October 2025, Prophet El-Bernard said that while President John Dramani Mahama would be handing over a mandate come January 7, 2029, Prof Opoku-Agyemang would be handing over to a female vice president.
“Then the Spirit of the Lord spoke to me clearly and said, ‘Look at the number nine.’ … The Holy Spirit said, ‘She shall be a voice for women in Ghana, and she shall open doors for women across the nations of the world. Through her, a new chapter will be birthed, not only in politics but in the destiny of women. She shall be a sign of possibility, a breaker of barriers, and a vessel of inspiration to many who have been waiting for a door to open,’” he said.
The prophet added, “The Lord repeated the word again and said, ‘She carries the number nine. She will be the ninth Vice President since 1979, and she will be sworn in on the seventh of January 2029.’”
He further stated that the woman he referred to as a ‘Number 9’ would be from two of the strong regions in Ghana.

“The woman is a power from several regions. There are two regions that combine to make her. That is why it is her turn, and that is why it is the turn for women. She is coming to open several doors for women. She, particularly, shall be the true voice of women,” he said.
He also said that the female who would become vice president would be from the Parliament of Ghana.
“I don’t know much about the first vice president in 1979, Joseph de Graft-Johnson, but you will see that from 1979 to now, the only vice president who has been in Parliament is John Dramani Mahama, and in 2029 the vice president, who is a woman, is somebody who has been in Parliament,” he stated.

Matilda Asante-Asiedu, the Second Deputy Governor of the Bank of Ghana, has urged banks to think beyond profit-making and consider the environmental and social implications of their investments in the extractive sector.
She said while the sector comprising mining, oil, and gas, contributed a significant 20% to Ghana’s GDP in the first half of the year, its impact on the environment and sustainability was also a major concern.
“If we’re lending to the right people, making sure that our investments are sustainable, it can actually go together with profit-making,” she noted.
Asante-Asiedu was addressing industry stakeholders at the fourth in a series of training programmes on Ghana Sustainable Banking Principles with focus on the extractives sector.
The training was designed for Environment and sustainability staff and relationship managers of banks to better understand the Ghana Sustainable Banking Principles (GSBPs) and the requirements of the banks in implementing these environmental, social and governance (ESG) best practices.
The event brought attention to the critical role of the financial sector in promoting sustainable practices in the extractive industry, which is a backbone of Ghana’s economy.
The workshop discussed the IFC performance standards, which provide guidelines for businesses and financial institutions to identify, assess, and manage environmental and social risks.
Asante-Asiedu pointed out that lending to environmentally responsible projects could actually support long-term profitability and value creation for shareholders.
“By prioritizing sustainability, financial institutions can help mitigate the sector’s environmental risks while also ensuring long-term profitability and value creation for shareholders,” she said.
Yewande Giwa, IFC Senior Country Officer, noted that the session was part of a broader effort to deepen understanding of environmental and social risks across sectors.
She emphasized that effective management of these risks was crucial for sustainable and responsible business practices.
“The extractive industry is a fundamental pillar of the Ghanaian economy, accounting for a significant portion of Ghana’s revenue. The environmental and social risks need to be managed in order for this sector to contribute to long-term growth in the country,” she said.
“When banks and other financial institutions integrate these practices into their operations, they not only protect themselves from financial and reputational risk, but they also curtail harmful practices like illegal mining by cutting off finance from non-compliant operators.
“Together, we can ensure that Ghana’s extractive sector remains a key driver of sustainable and inclusive growth, and that our natural environment is preserved for generations to come. “
John Awuah, Chief Executive Officer Ghana Association of Banks, said despite the strong contribution of the extractive sector to national development, it also presented challenges for sustainability, climate resilience, and agricultural growth.
“Mining consumes vast amounts of water and energy. Oil extraction poses risks to coastal and marine biodiversity, and the cumulative environmental debt from unsustainable practices threatens the very ecosystems on which future generations will depend,” he said.
Awuah said the Ghana Association of Banks would continue to intensify collaboration with regulator and development partners to build a dual-capacity framework, one that strengthens ESG competencies within banks and enhances compliance readiness within the extractive sector and services.
Zimbabwe’s President Emmerson Mnangagwa is constitutionally required to leave office in 2028
Zimbabwe’s governing ZANU-PF has said it will begin a process to extend President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s term by two years, potentially keeping him in power until 2030.
The plan was endorsed on Saturday at the movement’s annual conference in the eastern city of Mutare, where delegates instructed the government to begin drafting legislation to amend the Constitution, Justice Minister and ZANU-PF legal secretary Ziyambi Ziyambi said.
Mnangagwa, 83, is constitutionally required to leave office in 2028 after serving two elected terms. Any change would require a constitutional amendment – and potentially referendums – legal experts say.
Delegates erupted in applause after the motion passed, reinforcing ZANU-PF’s pattern of securitised rule since independence in 1980. The party controls parliament, giving it significant leverage, though some insiders warn that a legal challenge would be likely.
Mnangagwa has previously insisted he is a “constitutionalist” with no interest in clinging to power. But loyalists have quietly pushed for a prolonged stay since last year’s disputed election, while rivals inside the party – aligned with Vice President Constantino Chiwenga – are openly resisting an extension.
Blessed Geza, a veteran fighter from the liberation war and a Chiwenga ally, has been using YouTube livestreams to condemn the push, drawing thousands of viewers. Calls for mass protests have gained little traction amid a heavy police deployment in Harare and other cities.
The president made no mention of the extension during his closing remarks at the conference. Chiwenga has not commented on Mnangagwa’s term extension bid or the protests.

Bono Regional Minister Joseph Addae Akwaboa has cautioned chiefs and individuals allegedly supporting illegal mining in parts of the region to stop or face the law.
He said illegal mining had destroyed the environment in the affected areas and praised the security agencies for their role in fighting the menace.
He revealed that the Regional Security Council (REGSEC) had carried out two operations against illegal mining at Branam in the Wenchi Municipality and in some Banda District communities, including Serigbo, Nipanikro, and Bandaboase.
The operations led to the seizure of 11 excavators and 31 motorbikes, with the arrest of fifteen Chinese nationals who were arraigned before the court and have since been repatriated to their home country.
He warned that “no one, irrespective of the background or status, will be spared if caught in the net”. He said the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operation Security (NAIMOS) Taskforce had begun its work and would extend its operations to other areas in the region and close down all illegal sites.
“If you won’t stop, we shall stop it for you,” he said, with the assurance that the REGSEC would continue to work to clear the region of illegal miners.
Mr Akwaboa gave the warning at the inauguration of the reconstituted Bono Regional Coordinating Council in Sunyani.
The Council includes Municipal and District Chief Executives, Presiding Members, representatives of the Bono Regional House of Chiefs, Heads of Departments and Agencies, and the Regional Coordinating Director, as required by the Local Governance Act, 2016 (Act 936).
The Regional Minister urged the Chief Executives to focus on the development of the region in line with the government’s reset agenda.
The Banda District Chief Executive, Mr Peter Dongi, appealed to traditional leaders to support the fight against illegal mining, saying they are the custodians of the land and must help protect it.
The Regional Minister, Joseph Addae Akwaboa, observed that the security situation in the region has generally remained calm and peaceful, though there were sporadic “incidents of armed robbery cases, theft, rape, defilement, drug abuse and drug peddling, and other misdemeanor” which he said were ably handled by the Police and the other Security Agencies.
He said peace and security of the Region are paramount, hence the need to maintain it at all costs for the good of the citizenry.
He, however, expressed concern with the chieftaincy disputes in the region, especially in Sampa in the Jaman North District, which has been a bane to the socio-economic development of the region.
“Whilst REGSEC and the various MUSECs and DISECs are diligently working to maintain peace and security in Sampa and other areas, I wish to urge the Regional House of Chiefs to expedite action to resolve chieftaincy disputes pending before the Judicial Committee of the House”, he said.

Fans have shared their concerns after seeing a viral video of Nollywood actress Regina Daniels crying about her marriage online.
The movie star, who recently celebrated her birthday, was seen in the video being held by some people who tried to pacify her.
In the clip, she was also heard saying, “I cannot stand the violence anymore, it is getting too much.”
In the background, voices of some women could be heard urging Regina to calm down and drink water. They were also seen pouring water on her head while holding her at some point.
The video also showed some men exchanging words and on the verge of exchanging blows before the camera shifted to them.
In the recording, the mother of two screamed, “In Ned Nwoko’s house, I am nothing; in my house, I am a queen.”
Amid the drama, a voice, believed to be that of someone related to the film star, was heard making threats, saying, “If anything happens to my sister.”
Regina Daniels’ brother was also seen in the video, holding a long stick and attempting to confront a man in white.
They exchanged words while others at the scene tried to stop him.
Regina was heard in the background trying to caution her brother as he ran toward the man.
Later, some security operatives were seen holding the man in white and attempting to restore peace. Legit.ng could not authoritatively confirm if the video was an old clip or just a skit.
Both the actress and her politician husband have not publicly addressed the viral clip.
This video comes a few months after rumours surfaced about alleged trouble in the actress’s marriage.
Recall that amid the speculations, the film star deleted her Instagram page and started sharing cryptic messages online.
The viral clip also comes days a few days ago after the actress was seen with her sibling, proudly declaring that she doesn’t play with any of them.

Eighty-three-year-old President Alassane Ouattara is currently serving his third term
Alassane Ouattara’s long path to becoming Ivory Coast president included two elections in which he was disqualified from running, and a brief but brutal 2010-11 civil war spurred by his predecessor’s refusal to leave office.
Things have been easier since he took the top job in 2011, with landslide re-election wins in 2015 and 2020.
The 83-year-old former international banker hopes to replicate the feat for a third and potentially final time when West Africa’s biggest cocoa producer goes to the polls on October 25.
Ouattara’s supporters say his success at the ballot box reflects voter satisfaction with strong economic growth since he took office and a flurry of infrastructure projects, from new roads and interchanges to a more than 300-metre tower that dwarfs everything else in the city centre skyline.
His critics say it has just as much to do with restrictions on democratic activities, including what Amnesty International criticised on Thursday as a “disproportionate” ban on election-related protests.
The man who analysts say would be Ouattara’s biggest challenger, former Credit Suisse chief executive Tidjane Thiam, has been excluded after a court found he had French nationality when he registered, which is not permitted under Ivorian law.
Ouattara’s predecessor Laurent Gbagbo is barred because of a prior conviction.
Those who are allowed to contest do not have the backing of the country’s major political parties, hindering their ability to mobilise on a large scale, analysts said.
Instead, the four opposition candidates are heading up “makeshift coalitions” and are divided among themselves, said Cesar Flan Moquet, director of the Centre of Political Research of Abidjan, a think tank.
“All this means that these candidates do not really have a chance,” he said.
TURBULENT RISE TO THE TOP
Born in Dimbokro in central Ivory Coast on January 1, 1942, Ouattara received a doctorate in economics from the University of Pennsylvania, then rose to deputy director of the International Monetary Fund.
He later became prime minister under founding President Felix Houphouet-Boigny, whose death in 1993 ushered in a more toxic period in Ivorian politics.
New electoral rules, including one requiring candidates to have lived in Ivory Coast for the previous five years, prevented Ouattara from running in the 1995 election.
He was excluded again in 2020 on the grounds that one of his parents was from Burkina Faso. Gbagbo, who won that election, called Ouattara “a candidate for the foreigners”.
The war was largely a result of xenophobic policies by successive Ivorian governments against migrant farmers from Burkina Faso and Mali that also targeted northern Ivorians with cultural ties to them.
For the 2010 election, Ouattara formed a pact with former President Henri Konan Bedie which helped secure his victory in the runoff against Gbagbo.
Fighting that erupted after Gbagbo rejected his defeat killed around 3,000 people before Ouattara was sworn in in April 2011.
Ouattara coasted to re-election in 2015 and 2020, though the latter vote was marred by clashes between rival supporters that killed 85 people.
UNCERTAINTY OVER WHO COMES NEXT
Tensions do not appear to be running as high as in 2020, when critics were more agitated over Ouattara’s argument that a new constitution approved in 2016 had reset his two-term limit.
The protest ban and the deployment of 44,000 security forces to prevent unrest will help stave off large-scale unrest, said West Africa political risk consultant Jessica Moody.
Ouattara is likely to spend a fourth term focused on economic targets, including making Ivory Coast a middle-income country by 2030, bringing a new Abidjan metro online and improving roads and electricity access.
There is also the question of who comes after him, which he tried to answer before the 2020 election by naming then-Prime Minister Amadou Gon Coulibaly as his successor.
Coulibaly died several months later, and Ouattara went back on his promise to hand power to a new generation.

Afghanistan and Pakistan agreed to an immediate ceasefire during talks in Doha after a week of fierce border clashes that were the worst violence between the two countries since the Taliban seized power in Kabul in 2021.
The ceasefire between the South Asian neighbours “has been finalised”, Pakistan’s Defense Minister Khawaja Muhammad Asif posted on X on Sunday, saying both sides would meet again on October 25 in Istanbul to discuss “detailed matters”.
Qatar’s foreign ministry, which mediated Saturday’s talks along with Turkey, said the follow-up meetings were meant “to ensure the sustainability of the ceasefire and verify its implementation in a reliable and sustainable manner”.
MILITANT ATTACKS, AIRSTRIKES
Pakistan and Afghanistan are seeking a way forward after the clashes killed dozens and wounded hundreds. The talks were led by Asif and his Afghan counterpart, Mullah Muhammad Yaqoob, both sides said.
The ground fighting between the one-time allies and Pakistani airstrikes across their contested 2,600-km (1,600-mile) frontier were triggered after Islamabad demanded that Kabul rein in militants who had stepped up attacks in Pakistan, saying they operated from havens in Afghanistan.

AFGHANISTAN WITHDRAWS FROM CRICKET SERIES OVER STRIKES
Afghan government spokesperson Zabihullah Mujahid said Pakistan had conducted airstrikes in Afghanistan hours after the ceasefire, which began on Wednesday, was extended on Friday for as long as the Doha talks continued.
He said the attacks targeted civilians, adding that Kabul reserved the right to respond but that Afghan fighters had been directed to refrain from retaliating to respect the negotiating team.
Afghanistan withdrew from the cricket Twenty20 international tri-series in Pakistan next month after the death of three local cricketers that the Afghanistan Cricket Board said were due to military strikes in Paktika province.
Pakistan’s Information Minister Attaullah Tarar said in a post on X on Saturday that Pakistan had struck “verified” camps of Islamist militants along the border areas and rejected that the strikes had targeted civilians.

Ghana’s nationwide rollout for first-year Senior High School (SHS) admissions is proceeding largely with minimal incidents, as the Ghana Education Service (GES) confirms a smooth transition for over half a million students entering the 2025/2026 academic year.
The three-day reporting window, which began on Saturday, October 18 and concludes Monday, October 20, marks one of the largest coordinated admissions exercises in the country’s education sector.
According to the GES Public Relations Officer, Daniel Fenyi, monitoring teams were dispatched across the country on day one to assess and support the integration of new students—referred to locally as “freshers”—into their various schools.
“We ourselves went round to do some monitoring and see how the freshers are being integrated into the new environment. Largely, the process was ongoing very smoothly in a lot of the places,” Fenyi told Channel One Newsroom on Saturday, October 18.
Managing the Influx: Congestion and Adaptation
While most schools managed the surge in arrivals efficiently, a handful of institutions faced temporary congestion due to large numbers of students and accompanying parents converging at the same time.
Mr Fenyi explained that in such cases, school administrators sensibly advised families to return on Monday, the final reporting day, to ease bottlenecks and better coordinate orientation logistics.
“You wouldn’t want your child to miss the first week. If you are able to report by Monday, which is our ideal deadline, we wish that you are still able to do so. That way, your child won’t miss this important orientation exercise,” he emphasised, encouraging parents to prioritize timely reporting.
Speaking to JoyNews, one parent said, “We got here around 8 am, and there were already so many people. Some parents said they had been here since yesterday. For us, it went smoothly—but still, more can be done. Everything was done online, yet when you arrive, you still have to queue and wait for hours. I believe the internet challenges may be part of it, but it can be improved.”
Another parent, visibly tired after several hours of waiting, shared, “We came here at 6:30 am and it’s now 11:32. It’s not been easy. I wish the schools would give us separate reporting dates to ease the pressure.”
Despite the lengthy process, many students were visibly thrilled to begin school. One student said, “I’m very excited to be here. I’ve been inspired by others who came here, and I want to make my parents proud.” Another added, “This school is my dream, and I’m ready to study hard to make my father proud.”
GES officials underscored the importance of orientation, noting that early days are critical for familiarizing students with school rules, academic expectations, and available support services. Data from the Education Management Information System (EMIS) shows that students who participate fully in orientation are 30% less likely to drop out in their first year compared to latecomers.
A Record Intake for 2025/2026
This year’s intake—an estimated 590,000 first-year SHS students—sets a new record, reflecting Ghana’s steadily rising transition rates from Junior High School.
According to the Ministry of Education, the number represents a 5% increase over the 2024/2025 cohort, driven by improved basic education completion rates and expanded capacity under the government’s Free SHS policy.

CPP’s 2024 election running mate, Wayoe Ghanamannti, wants President John Dramani Mahama removed
The running mate of the Convention People’s Party (CPP) for the 2024 presidential election, Wayoe Ghanamannti, has announced that he has filed a petition for Parliament to start an impeachment procedure against President John Dramani Mahama.
Speaking on a panel discussion on JoyPrime on October 18, 2025, Ghanamannti, who is a lawyer, said that he had filed a petition in Parliament for the president to be removed in accordance with Article 69.
He asserted that Mahama must be removed from office because he has failed in the fight against illegal small-scale mining, commonly known as galamsey.
He accused Mahama of deceiving the people of Ghana that he would fight galamsey when he became president, just to win power.
“In the 2024 election, I was clear that when we come, galamsey will be off because we are stopping all licences. And at the end of the day, the NDC used the system of being angry about galamsey, capitalised on it so that, ‘let’s put the fire on the NPP.’ They come into power, and it’s the same thing.
“Now we have a gold board that is going behind and buying them (galamsey gold). So both NDC and NPP cannot stop galamsey.
He added, “And that is why I’ve brought an action of the highest form of accountability — that we should look at Article 69 and impeach the president. When Parliament comes, the Speaker must look at it. I’ve already submitted this.”

According to the police, the officers — Inspector Obinna Peter, Corporal Amaechi Augustine, and Corporal Ejikeme Victor — are currently in detention and are set to face an orderly room trial at the command headquarters on Monday (tomorrow).
Spokesperson for the command, Henry Okoye, in a statement on Saturday, said the arrest followed a thorough investigation ordered by the Commissioner of Police, Aboki Danjuma, into what he described as “an unacceptable display of unprofessionalism.”
He added, “The conduct displayed in the viral video is highly unprofessional and does not reflect the discipline, ethics, and values of the Nigeria Police Force. The outcome of the orderly room trial will be communicated to the public in due course.”
The video, shared by anti-cultism advocacy platform NaijaConfra, drew widespread criticism.
The platform stated, “These are police officers in Owerri, Imo State, openly disgracing the Nigeria Police Force by engaging in cult activities. They are boldly wearing Vikings (DNKI) berets and caps — an evil cult group responsible for countless deaths across Nigeria and beyond. These same officers are often used to kill rivals during cult clashes. How can such officers arrest a Vikings cultist when they are members themselves?”
The Imo State Government has said it is awaiting the conclusion of the police investigation before taking further action.
The Chief Press Secretary to Governor Hope Uzodinma, Oguwike Nwachukwu, while speaking with Sunday PUNCH, said, “The police have said they are launching an investigation into the allegations. Why don’t we wait until the outcome? Launching an investigation is something that ought to be commended. Let’s wait for the outcome, and the government can take it from there.”
The dominance of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in Ghanaian politics is under existential threat, according to Yaw Buaben Asamoa, General Secretary of the burgeoning United Party (UP).
Buaben Asamoa asserted that massive voter apathy and dissatisfaction have created an undeniable opening for a “third force” to challenge the entrenched two-party system.
The former legislator’s commentary provides the strongest indication yet of the UP’s strategy to position itself as the sole, viable alternative capable of capitalising on the growing discontent among the Ghanaian electorate ahead of the crucial 2028 general elections.
The Data of Dissatisfaction: Two Million Voters Erode Duopoly’s Safety
Buaben Asamoa pointed to hard electoral figures from the 2024 General Election to substantiate his claim that the duopoly’s safety margin has collapsed.
He highlighted the significant drop in voter turnout as the clearest sign of public frustration.
“It is obvious that there is a space for a third force. The duopoly is not safe anymore. It is a fact. Two million people refused to step out and vote in the last election,” he said on Channel One on Saturday, October 18.
This figure refers to the estimated 2 million registered voters who abstained from casting a ballot in the last presidential election.
The official voter turnout for the 2024 election stood around 70%, a notable decline from the 79% recorded in the previous election cycle.
Buaben Asamoa interpreted this gap not as mere laziness, but as a deliberate political signal.
“These were people who risked going into opposition because they were unhappy with either the leadership of their party or the goings on for that election.”
He framed the abstainers as politically conscious citizens, disillusioned by internal party issues, leadership choices, or the overall policy directions of the two dominant parties, whose cumulative vote share has historically topped 95% since the start of the Fourth Republic in 1992.
The Search for Credibility: UP Aims to Fill the Breach
Buaben Asamoa argued that while the appetite for an alternative is high—a “fact,” as he put it—the success of a third force hinges entirely on its credibility.
“It is a fact that there is appetite for a third force. The real question is whether or not there is a credible alternative which can step into either the breach for one of the duopoly or for both.”
The United Party, which comprises a coalition of former high-ranking members from both the NDC and NPP, aims to be that credible alternative. By uniting experienced political figures with a clear focus on good governance and economic stability, the UP seeks to prove that it can offer a superior administrative capacity compared to the established parties.
He concluded his remarks by clearly articulating the United Party’s ambitious objective:
“That is what we aim to be — a credible alternative.”
The UP is betting that if they can capture even a fraction of the 2 million disillusioned voters, along with voters seeking a change in policy direction, they could fundamentally alter Ghana’s political landscape, forcing a presidential run-off for the first time in over two decades, or even achieving an outright victory.

The Inter-Governmental Action Group against Money Laundering in West Africa (GIABA), is scheduled to hold a two-day national sensitisation seminar for religious leaders and institutions on Anti-Money Laundering and Counter-Financing of Terrorism (AML/CFT) measures in Accra.
The objective of the seminar to be organised between October 21st and 22nd 2025, is to raise the awareness level of religious leaders on the role of AML/CFT framework, especially GIABA’s mandate.
It will also agree on actionable points to promote peaceful co-existence in particular, and in general AML/CFT efforts.
In a press release signed by Mr Timothy Melaye, the Acting Principal Officer, (Communication and Advocacy) GIABA, he said the fight against Money Laundering and Terrorist Financing (ML/TF) was a collective responsibility of all stakeholders, towards protecting the economies and financial systems from the laundering of proceeds of crime.
He said GIABA recognised the valuable contribution of religious leaders as guardians of faith, and their institutions held tremendous sway amongst their followers.
He explained that fundamentally, one of GIABA’s core Strategic Goals in the 2011-2014 Strategic Plan was the promotion of strategic partnerships with the private sector, civil society and other key stakeholders, to increase awareness of ML/TF to empower citizens to act.
Mr Melaye said recognising the role of religious leaders in Preventing Violent Extremism (PVE) and promoting the religious dimension of intercultural dialogues, the United Nations Secretary General enshrined in its Plan of Action on PVE, the importance for faith and community leaders to mentor “vulnerable followers to enable them to reject violent ideologies,” and promote “tolerance, understanding and reconciliation between communities.”
He said the involvement of religious leaders was vital in the fight against ML/TF and must be seen as legitimate as well as effective and sustainable, because religious faith appealed to people on emotional levels for attitudinal changes and it also gave voice to the wide range of community concerns.
In using persuasion as a strategy, religious leaders needed to understand what specific contributions they could and had to make to overcome the menace of ML and insurgent of TF towards transforming public understanding, attitudes and standard setting, Mr Melaye said.
The release said the broad themes of the seminar would include: The Role of Religious Leaders in Preventing Money Laundering and Terrorism Financing; Money laundering and terrorist financing risks and vulnerabilities associated with religious organisations, Religious Institutions as a tool for promotion of Peaceful co-existence, Risk of terrorist abuse in non-profit organisations, Promoting Tolerance and Preventing Violent Extremism.
The training will be delivered by technical experts and GIABA faculty, involving presentations, case studies, group work, and sharing sessions.
GIABA is a specialised institution of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) as well as a Financial Action Task Force -Styled Regional Body, responsible for combating the scourge of Money Laundering and Terrorist Financing in West Africa.
It was established by the Authority of Heads of States and Government of ECOWAS in the year 2000 with the mandate to protect the national economies and financial systems of member States from abuse and the laundering of proceeds of crime.

John Jinapor Minister of Energy and Green Transition
Ghana’s Minister of Energy and Green Transition has disclosed that the previous administration quietly handed over the Tema Oil Refinery (TOR) to a private company for just US$22 million, raising serious concerns about transparency, value for money, and national interest.
John Jinapor, who made the revelation during a working visit to the refinery, described the transaction as “surreptitious”, questioning how such a strategic national asset could be transferred under unclear terms and without the approval of key oversight bodies.
He stated that the matter has been formally referred to the Attorney-General for legal review and appropriate action to determine the legality of the deal and ensure that Ghana’s strategic energy infrastructure is not compromised.
The disclosure comes at a time when TOR, Ghana’s only state-owned refinery, is undergoing a phased rehabilitation to restore its operational efficiency after years of low output and equipment challenges.
Over the past nine months, the refinery’s management, led by Mr Edmond Kombat, has overseen significant upgrades aimed at boosting daily refining capacity, reducing operational losses, and improving environmental standards.
The minister lauded the progress but stressed that leadership instability has historically undermined TOR’s performance. He urged management to adopt long-term, sustainable business models and build partnerships that are transparent and nationally beneficial.
He also announced that his ministry will collaborate with the Ministry of Roads and Highways to improve road access within the Tema industrial enclave — a move expected to enhance supply chain efficiency and refinery logistics.
Beyond the refinery, the Minister also paid a working visit to the Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo), where he expressed concern over the firm’s declining financial position. Once a financially robust entity capable of self-financing major transmission projects, GRIDCo is now grappling with liquidity constraints that threaten its operational capacity.
He charged GRIDCo’s management to implement measures to restore its financial health, emphasising that the company’s stability is key to the success of President John Dramani Mahama’s 24-hour economy initiative, which relies on a reliable power supply to sustain productivity and job creation.
The visits, according to the Minister, form part of a broader government agenda to modernise Ghana’s energy sector, strengthen corporate governance, and ensure accountability across all state-owned enterprises.
