Ghanaians divided over proposal for President to pay taxes

0

By Christine Naadu Lartey

Tema, Jan. 7, GNA- Some Ghanaians have expressed mixed reactions to a proposal by the Constitutional Review Consultative Committee (CRCC) for the Presidents of Ghana to pay taxes on their salaries and emoluments.

The proposal is aimed at setting an example for the rest of the citizenry and reflects the principle of equality before the law and accords with the rule of law.

Some citizens have expressed divided opinions on the recommendation, with those in favour stating it would serve as a motivation for citizens to pay their taxes.

Mr Desmond Oti, a worker supporting the recommendation, said it was a good recommendation which must be extended to ministers of state and members of parliament.

“They take major decisions that affect the lives of ordinary people, so they should also feel the same financial pressures we face every day,” he noted.

Ms Rachel Owusu, a graduate student at the University of Media, Arts, and Communication (UniMAC–IJ), told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) that the President, as a salaried worker, should be subjected to the same tax obligations as all other citizens.

“The President works for the country and receives a monthly salary like any other worker, so he should also pay taxes. No one should be above the law,” she said, adding that the move would strengthen public trust in governance.

Mrs Abigail Darley Bortey, a trader, said many people in the informal sector viewed the president’s tax exemption as unfair, especially when market women and small business operators were required to pay taxes.

“If the President pays taxes, it shows he is a citizen like everyone else. It will encourage people to comply willingly because they will see that the law applies equally to everyone,” she said.

Meanwhile, Mr Samuel Addo argued that the President’s position was unique and should retain certain privileges, including tax exemptions.

He described the presidency as a demanding office that required constant sacrifice, adding that a tax-free salary was a modest way of recognising the responsibilities attached to the role.

“The President gives up his private life to serve the nation around the clock. Allowing him a tax-free salary helps to preserve the dignity and stature of the office,” he said.

American live streamer and YouTuber Darren Watkins Jr, known popularly as IShowSpeed, has embarked on a 28 days African tour dubbed “Speed Does Africa” to experience African culture and it has left some Americans questioning their misconceptions about the continent.

Through his daily YouTube and Twitch live streams so far across countries such as South Africa, Zimbabwe and Eswatini, the streamer has shown cities, modern infrastructure, well-constructed and accessible highways that have left some viewers stunned.

Several Americans viewers have taken to social media to describe how little they know about the continent.

Sticka has always been a tribal bigot

0

Gideon Boako, Member of Parliament for Tano North Gideon Boako, Member of Parliament for Tano North

Member of Parliament for Tano North, Gideon Boako, has described Member of Parliament for Nhyeaso, Dr Stephen Amoah, as a bigot.

According to him, the only reason Sticka refused to support his bid to become the Ashanti Regional Youth Organiser in the past was due to tribal issues.

He explains that the legislator has, over the years, been a tribal bigot and should not be entertained.

Gideon Boako’s comments come on the back of claims by Stephen Amoah that Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo wanted to appoint him as Minister of Finance, but Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia wanted someone from the North.

“Tribalism was the only consideration why Sticka campaigned against me for the position of Ashanti regional youth organizer despite being a close friend and knowing I was the best candidate. He has been a tribal bigot since,” he said.

He further urged the New Patriotic Party delegates to take Sticka’s comments with a pinch of salt, indicating that the unsavoury comment does not move the Bawumia campaign.

The allegations made by Hon. Stephen Amoah a.k.a Sticka are false and even illogical Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and his campaign team will not be distracted by these desperate efforts to whip up tribalism and bigotry in a bid to win votes in this impending NPP presidential primaries.

The Bawumia campaign encourages delegates to continue rejecting such divisive and retrogressive schemes aimed at undermining the party’s unity and its future.

The Ministry of Sports and Recreation, in conjunction with the Ghana Athletics and the Confederation of African Athletics (CAA), have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) ahead of the 2026 African Athletics Championships, set to take place in Ghana.

The signing ceremony was held at the conference room of the sports ministry on January 7, 2025, with the sector minister Kofi Adams, CAA President Hamad Kalkaba Malboum, Ghana Athletics President Bawa Fuseini, and other officials in attendance.

In his address, the minister expressed his delight that Ghana will host the championship for the first time.

Ghanaian Athletes’ Performance in 2025: No podium finish for Ghana

The minister, who is also the Buem Member of Parliament, emphasised that athletics is a major sport in the country.

“We are here to sign the MoU for the Senior African Athletics Championships. I am highly elated about this. I have told the president and his vice that athletics in Ghana is a big thing. Everybody will admit that in school, the time they enjoyed most and made friends was during athletics,” he stated.

The minister further noted that President John Dramani Mahama and the entire government are committed to the event and have allocated funds in the national budget to support infrastructural development.

CAA President Hamad Kalkaba Malboum commended Ghana’s achievements in athletics and urged the Local Organizing Committee (LOC) and the government to deliver a successful event.

“We came here to thank you for this occasion. We know Ghana is home to athletics, so we are happy to host the competition here. Ghana received overwhelming endorsement during the selection process when competing with Botswana, so we believe the country can deliver,” he said.

Meanwhile, Ghana Athletics President Bawa Fuseini reiterated the country’s determination to host the championship with minimal challenges and to compete for laurels.

Following the speeches, the sports minister and the CAA president signed the MoU to officially kick-start preparations for the event.

The delegation also visited the National Sports Authority (NSA), the Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC), and toured the Legon Sports Stadium to assess the state of the facility.

The 2026 African Athletics Championships are scheduled to be held in Ghana in May 2026.
