Fifty hippos killed by anthrax in DR Congo

0

Virunga in eastern DR Congo is home to many mountain gorillas and over 1,000 hippos Virunga in eastern DR Congo is home to many mountain gorillas and over 1,000 hippos

At least 50 hippos and other large animals have been killed by anthrax poisoning in Africa’s oldest national park, its director has said.

Photos shared by the Virunga National Park in the Democratic Republic of Congo show the motionless animals floating along the Ishasha River. Park officials say they first started appearing last week.

The exact cause of the poisoning is unknown but tests have confirmed the presence of anthrax.

Park director Emmanuel de Merode said work was under way to recover the animals and bury them to prevent further spread, but it was difficult because there were no excavators.

“It’s difficult due to lack of access and logistics,” he told Reuters news agency.

“We have the means to limit the spread by… burying them with caustic soda.”

The river runs north to Lake Edward, one of Africa’s great lakes, where more dead animals have been reported locally.

Anthrax is caused by Bacillus anthracis and can be deadly but usually it does not spread easily.

It largely survives as spores that hide away in soil for years before entering an animal through inhalation or a cut or wound.

The Congolese Institute for the Conservation of Nature has warned residents to avoid wildlife and boil water from local sources before drinking.

Stretching 7,800 sq km (3,000 sq miles), Virunga is one of the most biologically diverse, but also most dangerous, national parks on the continent.

The park is a popular tourist destination but has also been affected by the conflict between rebel groups and the Congolese army in recent years.

Thousands of armed soldiers belonging to different rebel groups roam Virunga and its surrounding areas, battling for control of the region’s rich resources.

Many rangers have died protecting wildlife there.

In recent decades there have been efforts to increase the number of hippos in the park after the population declined from over 20,000 to just a few hundred as a result of poaching and war.

Don’t Append Honorary Titles To Names •GTEC Directs

0

Prof. Abdulai Ahmed Jinapor

The Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) has expressed “its deep concern regarding the increasing prevalence of Honorary Doctorate degrees and Professorship titles that are conferred upon individuals by various Institutions, both within Ghana and abroad.”

The Commission has, in a release, therefore directed that those so conferred with honorary degrees cease appending same to their names.

The Director General of the Commission, Prof. Abdulai Ahmed Jinapor, in the release stated that “it is imperative that these titles are not appended to recipient’s names as part of their credentials,” adding that doing so “is unethical and contravenes several provisions of the Education Regulatory Bodies Act, 2020 (Act 1023), as well as other pertinent laws governing higher education in Ghana.”

The use of the titles Doctor (Dr.) and Professor (Prof.) by recipients of such awards, according to GTEC, is common practice in the country. “These practices are deemed misleading and serve to misinform both the Academic community and the general public,” it stressed.

The Commission while clarifying its position on the matter for the benefit of the public and those affected, explained that honorary degrees are conferred judiciously and strategically to individuals of exceptional achievement and distinguished service, whose contributions align with and enhance the values and mission of the conferring institution.

“While the Commission acknowledges and encourages the responsible recognition of distinguished individuals by higher education institutions,” it asserts that “such honours should only be conferred by accredited and duly recognised institutions within the realm of Ghanaian higher education.”

Continuing, the release points out that “The Mandate of GTEC: Section 8 (3) d of the Education Regulatory Bodies Act mandates the Commission to regulate the use of higher education nomenclature and titles, including “University”, “College”, “Emeritus”, “Professor”, “Doctor”, “Chartered”, and related terms. Thus, the Commission, in its pursuit to uphold the integrity of Ghanaian tertiary education, appeals to the general public and institutions within the Ghanaian higher education landscape to collaborate in this endeavour.”

The Commission, in the light of the foregone, has implored individuals to exercise personal responsibility regarding this issue and refrain from using these titles as part of their names. Higher education institutions, on the other hand, have been advised to exercise restraint in the conferral of these honours, “as we collectively honour and promote partnerships with our stakeholders to develop and maintain the integrity of Ghanaian higher education.”

The Commission has threatened to impose sanctions on recalcitrant institutions which continue to abuse the conferment of honorary degrees thereby “diluting the value of true Doctoral education and potentially mislead students, academia and the general public.”

The album, released late last year, features sixteen tracks that showcase his unique blend of style and storytelling.

Minazy Yaazo’s creative use of the Dangme language adds a rich cultural depth to his music, making it a compelling listen for fans of diverse musical genres.

From the opening notes of the album, it’s clear that Minazy Yaazo has poured his heart and soul into this project. Tracks like “Akwetey” and “Holy Ghost Fire” demonstrate his ability to craft songs that are both catchy and meaningful, blending traditional Dangme influences with modern hip-hop elements. The album’s thematic depth is evident in its exploration of personal growth, cultural identity, and social commentary and the songs range from afrobeats through highlife to reggae gospel and other fusions.

While each track offers something unique, “Carry Me Go” stands out for its uplifting vibe, showcasing Minazy Yaazo’s ability to create motivational anthems. “The Dangme Time” highlights his pride in his cultural heritage, using the Dangme language to convey powerful messages.

The album also features collaborations that enhance its overall appeal, such as “ON GOD” featuring Kwesi Amewuga, which adds a spiritual dimension to the album.

Minazy Yaazo’s use of the Dangme language is a creative highlight of the album. We never said COVID-19, Russia-Ukraine war did not affect Ghana – Murtala Mohammed

0

Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, Minister of Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, Minister of Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation

The Minister of Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation, Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, has rejected claims by the Minority that he has admitted COVID-19 and the Russia-Ukraine war negatively impacted Ghana’s economy.

In a lengthy Facebook post, the minister sought to correct what he called an erroneous impression that he was echoing the former government’s justification for the country’s struggling economy.

He emphasised that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has never claimed that the COVID-19 pandemic and the Russia-Ukraine war did not affect the global economy, including Ghana.

“I hear our incompetent and corruption-infested friends in the Micro Minority are saying that I admitted in my speech in Geneva that COVID-19 and the Russia-Ukraine war had been the cause of the economic challenges we faced in Ghana under their watch, in an attempt to justify how grossly incompetent they managed the economy of Ghana. I do not know whether I should cry or laugh. Even in their attempt to lie, they demonstrate crass incompetence.”

“For emphasis, I want to be very clear, we have never said that those two incidents never had an effect on the global economy and that of Ghana. What we refused to accept was their desperate attempt to blame the entirety of the mess they created on COVID-19 and the Russia-Ukraine war,” a portion of the post read.

He clarified that their position was always contextual, comparing Ghana’s economic performance with neighbouring countries in the sub-region to highlight how poorly the country was managed during the crisis.

“And we did so, pointing to other countries, particularly our neighbours, who faced similar challenges yet managed their economies far better than they did.”

“Perhaps, the current trade war between America, China, and Europe, which I referred to, was also there. These dudes are not learning at all.”

Murtala Mohammed’s reaction follows earlier statements he made about the ongoing trade war between the United States and its partners, noting that it poses economic challenges to countries including Ghana.

In a speech delivered at an event in Geneva on Monday, April 7, 2025 the minister noted that when two elephants fight, it is the grasshopper that suffers.

He acknowledged the widespread impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on all nations, including Ghana, “The recent global challenges, such as the Russian-Ukrainian war and the unfortunate trade wars, which started as suspicion but have become our reality and taking into consideration the popular saying in Ghana that when two elephants fight, it is the grasshopper that suffers, so, we do know the challenges that will be confronting us,” he said.

Despite these challenges, he assured that Ghana is making significant strides by leveraging science, technology, and innovation to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

“The broader effects of the COVID-19 pandemic cannot be lost on any country, including Ghana. Despite these global challenges, Ghana has devised several plans and strategies towards achieving the SDGs, leveraging science, technology, and innovation,” Murtala Mohammed stated.

Okyere Baafi slams government over absence of clear export trade policy

0

A former Deputy Minister of Trade and Industry, Michael Okyere Baafi A former Deputy Minister of Trade and Industry, Michael Okyere Baafi

A former Deputy Minister of Trade and Industry, Michael Okyere Baafi, has expressed concern over the government’s failure to outline a clear policy on export trade, particularly regarding the industrial sector.

He also criticised the current administration for not providing a comprehensive plan to address the challenges faced by exporters and industrial players.

In a video shared on X on April 8, 2025, he stated, “I drew attention to the public that government has not given clear policy direction that would deal with this ramification, specifically on export, and also how to tackle issues like this in the future.”

He emphasised that most individuals involved in export are from the industrial sector, which plays a key role in economic and national viability.

“Note that most of the people in this business are people in industry, and the industrial sector is a sector that will make the country very viable and also sustainable. Therefore, I believe that every government must take so much interest in the industrial sector,” he said.

Baafi highlighted that developed nations such as the United States, China, and the UK attained economic success through strong industrial foundations.

“Because note that almost all the first world countries in the world, America, Canada, China, Japan, Britain, all of them are where they are because of industrialisation. So, we believe that the only way out for us as a country is to industrialize: to be able to set up manufacturing setups, add value to raw materials produced in this country so we can sell more here and export more to earn foreign exchange to support our country,” he explained.

He expressed concern over what he perceives as a lack of clarity and precision from the current government in terms of export trade policy:

“This is why I believe that this government does not show much precision in the area of specifically letting us know the policy direction for export trade.”

Baafi praised the previous government under President Akufo-Addo for its industrialisation initiative, specifically the One District One Factory (1D1F) policy:

“That’s how come our government, [Akufo-Addo] implemented the policy of 1D1F, intentionally trying to industrialise Ghana.”

However, he expressed worry over the apparent replacement of that policy, questioning the specifics and effectiveness of any new initiative.

Kontris wey carry out di highest number of executions in 2024, China own remain a mystery

0

Amnesty International say di number of pipo wey chop execution across di world rise sharply for 2024.

According to di NGO latest report on death sentences and executions, for 2024 dem execute a total of 1,518 pipo, 32% more dan 2023, despite a reduction in di number of kontris wey dey implement di death penalty.

Amnesty data show say di number of deaths wey dem record last year na di highest since 2015, while di number of kontris involved fall from 16 to 15.

Di kontri wey dey believed to execute di most pipo for di world na China, but dem no get any definitive number for recorded executions in di kontri.

Dis na becos e no get official data sake of say China treat dis statistics as a state secret, Amnesty tok.

Vietnam and North Korea na two more kontris wey dey use di death penalty extensively, but dem no dey reveal di number of executions.

Executions wey dey known pass

Iran lead di world in terms of known executions.

“Iran, Iraq and Saudi Arabia dey responsible for di sharp increase in deaths last year, as dem carry out ova 91% of known executions, violating human rights and wickedly taking pipo lives for drug-related and terrorism charges,” Agnès Callamard, Amnesty International Secretary General tok.

For 2024, at least 972 pipo – wey include 30 women – Iran put dem to death, according to di report. For 2023 di corresponding figure na 853.

Iranian human rights activists link dis increase to internal political turmoil.

“We don see di number of executions increase afta major protests and for periods of uncertainty,” Roya Boroumand, Executive Director of Aborrahman Boroumand Center for Human Rights for Iran explain.

Boroumand point out say 12 women dey executed for 2022 and 25 for 2023. Some of dem dey convicted for drug related offenses. She say critics of di regime too dey targeted.

“Several women activists don chop death sentenced – an effective warning to Iranian women wey dey oppose di discriminatory laws and practices,” Boroumand told tell di BBC.

Iran regional neighbour Saudi Arabia execute 345 pipo, and Iraq come next wit 63.

Amnesty say Iran and Somali each execute four pipo under di age of 18.

Iran and Afghanistan na di two kontris wey carry out public executions for 2024.

‘Thousands of executions’

Di Amnesty figures get a notable caveat, howeva.

“Our global figures for 2024 no include di thousands of executions and death sentences wey we believe say e kontinu to take place for China,” Chiara Sangiorgio, Amnesty International sabi pesin on di death penalty tell di BBC. “Death penalty figure remain classified as a state secret, but di information wey we gada bin paint a harrowing picture.”

Amnesty believe say China dey apply death penalty for corruption and drug trafficking in violation of a UN resolution, wey tok say di imposition of di death penalty gatz dey restricted to di “most serious crimes”, wey di UN Human Rights Committee define as dose wey dey involved in intentional killing.

Crimes wey no result into direct and intentional death, such as drug and sexual offences, no meet dat criteria.

“We also see say di authorities kontinu to resort to executions as a tool for weaponry of state control, to send a message say crime and dissent no go dey tolerated,” Sangiorgio say.

China get a long history of using capital punishment. For 1983 e implement a “strike hard” policy, wey dey aim at criminal gangs.

Media reports suggest say some executions na for non-lethal crimes like stealing cattle or vehicles.

Drug traffickers dey specifically targeted. Amnesty report for 1996 say “International Anti-drugs Day on 26 June dey marked by di execution of more dan 230 pipo in one day for several cities”.

Death penalty dey reduce?

Professor Michelle Miao from di Chinese University of Hong Kong don look into different factors wey dey contribute to di high number of death penalties for recent years. She tok to di BBC about her work and explain why e no dey easy to estimate number of judicial executions for China.

“Like many kontris wit capital punishment, China no dey publish comprehensive execution data. My research suggest dis from both policy traditions and di sensitive nature of di subject,” Prof Miao say.

For her research, she interview 40 Chinese judges and an equal number of defence lawyers. Her conclusions find a lack of consistency for di death convictions and also ambiguity in law.

“Di Criminal Law provide say suspended death sentences suppose apply only “wen immediate execution dey unnecessary”. But which kain criteria make Chinese judges use to define dis necessity?” Prof Miao ask. “More dan two-thirds of my interviewees, wey include Supreme People Court judges dey unable to provide a precise ansa to dis question.”

Di US-based rights group Dui Hua say di total number of executions for China don come down from 12,000 for 2002 to about 2,000 for 2018. E no give any details for di subsequent years. Dui Hua refuse a BBC request to comment further about di present situation for China.

Miao relate dis fall for estimated executions to a series of reforms for di criminal justice system wey dem introduce ova di last two decades. A convict fit now get two appeals instead of one, and while di Chinese Penal Code of 1979 listed 74 offences punishable by death, dem revised dis one down for 2011 and 2015.

Currently, 46 crimes fit result for a death sentence.

“Murders and drug-related offenses na di two major crimes wey dey lead to di death penalty,” Prof Miao say.

She dey optimistic about di coming years, believing say rapid changes for technology, preventive law enforcement and improving living standards for China go reduce crimes.

“Sake of di reduction for cases wey involve drug-related crimes – such as trafficking, smuggling, manufacturing, and transportation – as well as murder, and di likelihood of dis trend to kontinue, we fit expect a reduction for overall executions in di coming years.”

Conviction rate

Chinese courts handle a high volume of cases, and conviction rates dey also veri high. According to a report published by Dui Hua, “only 631 individuals out of di 1,431,585 defendants dey not guilty by criminal courts for 2022”.

“Di conviction rate for 2022 na 99.95 percent, a record high according to statistics for di China Law Yearbook,” according to an article in Dui Hua.

Anoda academic paper published by di International Journal of Law, Crime and Justice note say a court for Wenzhou city, Zhejiang province, convict evri single defendant between 1995 and 1999.

Prof Miao say conviction rates dey high becos of di vetting process.

“Throughout di Chinese criminal justice process, cases undergo pre-trial screening. Only dose deemed likely to result in convictions dey advanced through trials due to judicial risk aversion and a performance evaluation system wey prosecutors fit filter out weak cases,” she explain.

“Dis apply not only to death penalty cases but to criminal cases in general.”

Wit such a high conviction rate, miscarriages of justice fit dey expected to occur. For 2016, 27 officials dey penalised for di wrongful execution of a teenager wey chop accuse of rape and murder, and dem later pay di 18-year-old parents compensation.

China no dey unique for such a high conviction rate – neighbouring kontri Japan wit democracy, fit also boast of more dan 99% convictions afta indictment. Japan neva execute anyone since July 2022, howeva.

Despite international concerns about di numbers of executions for China, Prof Miao say public opinion inside di kontri dey largely supportive of di death penalty.

Cedi starts week on a weak note; one dollar going for GH¢16.00

0

The Ghana cedi started this week on a weaker note after strengthening against the US dollar last week amid a weakening US dollar Index.

It depreciated slightly against the American greenback in the retail market, going for GH¢16.00.

This culminated in a year-to-date depreciation of 2.36%.

It is, however, unclear why the cedi has come under some pressure after the ongoing tariff impositions by President Trump’s administration led to a shift in investor sentiment, triggering 197.81 197.81-point week-on-week decline in the U.S. Dollar Index (DXY) to close at 302.02 points (Year-to-Date), reflecting waning confidence in U.S. assets.

Nonetheless, analysts expect the cedi to gain this week as the DXY continues to dip due to shifts in investors’ appetite away from US dollar-denominated assets.

Additionally, the Bank of Ghana published the auction calendar for the Bulk Oil Distribution Companies and intends to sell US$120 million in quarter 2 of 2025.

Databank Research believes these developments will positively impact market sentiments around the cedi’s performance in the near term.

Last week, the cedi gained 0.16% week-on-week versus the US dollar to close at a mid-rate of GH¢15.78, while shedding 0.74% week-on-week versus the pound and 0.59% week-on-week to the euro. This narrowed the year-to-date depreciation of the cedi to the dollar at 1.57%

Indeed, the demand for European and British assets surged, strengthening the euro and pound.

ARI Hosts Workshop On Youth-Led Livestock Project

0

The workshop in session

The Animal Research Institute (ARI) of the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) in collaboration with the Food and   Agriculture Organisation of United Nations   (FAO) are implementing a project titled   “Strengthening Youth-Led Livestock Enterprises through Enhanced Capacity and Inputs Support” in two municipalities (Adentan and Ga West) in the Greater Accra Region.

The project is a pilot initiative aimed at addressing key gaps in capacity building, access to inputs and veterinary services.

It focuses on good husbandry practices, promotion of digital livestock production and   strengthening the livestock (rabbit and   poultry) value chain to create employment opportunities for the young farmers.

As part of the project outline to ensure the credibility, reliability and relevance of the results of the diagnostic study (first phase of the project), a validation workshop was   organised at CSIR-Animal Research Institute   on Thursday, April 3, 2025.  The workshop participants included FAO members, experts from academia, Municipal Agriculture Directors, agricultural extension officers, and rabbit and poultry farmers.

During the presentation of the findings, Dr. Siegfred Affedzie-Obresi, a technical expert and member of the research team from the CSIR-Animal Research Institute, emphasised the need to conduct a thorough sensitisation exercise on the dangers associated with the   use of antibiotics and the impact of antimicrobial resistance (AMR).

He stressed that although most rabbit and poultry farmers in the municipalities are aware of this phenomenon and its health implications, they do not follow the prescribed withdrawal period for the use of antibiotics. The non-compliance poses a serious public health risk, as drug residues in animal products could contribute to antibiotic resistance in humans.

He cautioned that improper use of antibiotic   in livestock production could lead to the rise in   bacteria resistance, making common infections difficult to treat. Dr. Affedzie-Obresi highlighted key challenges in poultry and rabbit production, including poor quality parent stock, disease outbreaks, high feed cost, weak marketing linkages and limited access to finance.

In her welcome address, Dr. Doris Yaa Osei, Acting Deputy Director of the CSIR-ARI and Project Team Leader, reaffirmed the Institute’s mandate to develop and transfer technologies that enhance livestock and poultry production in Ghana.

She highlighted that CSIR-Animal Research   Institute plays a crucial role in research, extension, training and disease control in the livestock sector. Through these efforts, the Institute continues to support farmers with innovative research and development to improve productivity and resilience in animal agriculture.

Mr. Caesar Vulley, Regional Youth Employment Specialist for the Food and Agriculture Organisation Regional Office for Africa (FAORAF), stated that the diagnostic study on rabbit and poultry production has provided FAO with current insight into the challenges facing   youth farmers. He emphasised that while   there are common issues affecting all farmers,   youth farmers face unique challenges that require targeted interventions.

Highlighting the importance of the diagnostic research, Mr. Vulley further noted that the project activities align with FAO’s focus on decent employment opportunities for youth within agriculture.

Akufo-Addo encouraged me to investment in Menzgold

Prophet Nicholas Osei, popularly known as 'Kumchacha' Prophet Nicholas Osei, popularly known as ‘Kumchacha’

Founder and leader of Heaven’s Gate Ministries, Prophet Nicholas Osei, popularly known as Prophet Kumchacha, has revealed that former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo encouraged him to invest in the now-defunct gold trading company, Menzgold Ghana Limited.

Speaking during a discussion on Adom FM, Prophet Kumchacha revealed that prior to committing funds to the company, he sought counsel from the former president, who reportedly endorsed the decision.

“When I was about to invest my money in Menzgold, I consulted former President Nana Akufo-Addo, and he told me it was a good decision to invest there. He motivated me to go ahead with my investment in Menzgold. After I invested my money and it locked, I returned to him and he assured me that I would get my money back. However, to this day, I have not received it,” Kumchacha stated.

Prophet Kumchacha, who is believed to be among the many Ghanaians whose investments have been locked up since the company’s shutdown, has expressed immense disappointment with both the previous government and the company’s CEO, Nana Appiah Mensah, popularly known as Nam 1.

Kumchacha further questioned Nam 1’s integrity and spiritual standing.

“As for Nam 1, I believe he won’t make it to heaven. The Bible says ‘Thou shall not judge,’ but in the case of Nam 1, I will judge him,” he said.

Menzgold was ordered to shut down its operations in 2018 by the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).

According to the regulator, the company was operating without the necessary licenses and in violation of the Securities Industry Act, 2016 (Act 929).

Numerous legal disputes and public outcry have been triggered in recent years by the shutdown of the gold trading company, which prevented hundreds of consumers from accessing their investment.

US Tariff to impact Ghana’s Cocoa, Textiles and Agriculture

0

Ghanaian exporters are bracing for the impact of a new 10% tariff on imports imposed by the United States, which is expected to affect key non-traditional exports.

The measure, announced by US President Donald Trump, has sparked concern among local producers and exporters over potential losses in market share, pricing competitiveness, and earnings from the American market.

According to information supplied by the Ministry of Trade, Agribusiness and Industry, the new tariff will directly affect Ghana’s cocoa derivatives—a key value-added export segment, garments and textiles, cashew, shea butter, and a range of agricultural products.

With Ghana being one of the world’s leading cocoa producer countries, the move could undermine efforts to expand the country’s footprint in processed cocoa exports.

Garments and textiles, another sector targeted under the tariff per information from the Ministry, could also see a significant setback.

The sector has seen modest growth under trade frameworks such as the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA), which offers duty-free access to the U.S. market. Industry stakeholders fear the new tariff may erode the cost advantage Ghanaian manufacturers enjoy, making it harder to compete with other low-cost producers globally.

The agricultural sector is not spared either. Exports of cashew, shea butter, fruits, vegetables, and yam—some of Ghana’s top-performing non-traditional exports—are now subject to the increased import duty.

Exporters in these sectors worry that the added cost burden could lead to reduced demand from U.S. buyers or force them to absorb losses to remain competitive.

Analysts say the move could have broader implications for Ghana’s export-led growth strategy and foreign exchange earnings, especially at a time when the country is working to diversify its economy away from raw material exports.

Others are also proposing for the government to leverage on the opportunities presented by the African Continental Free Trade Area.

Meanwhile, sector Ministers for Foreign Affairs and Trade, Agribusiness and Industry have been exploring diplomatic engagements with U.S. Ambassador to Ghana Virginia Palmer to mitigate the impact after close door meetings on April 7.

‘That is what he thinks, allow him’ – DJ Slim defends TV3 guest

0

Media personality and entertainment pundit, DJ Slim Media personality and entertainment pundit, DJ Slim

Media personality and entertainment pundit, DJ Slim, has shared his thoughts following a recent TV3 video in which a guest claimed that Sarkodie’s career has ended.

Speaking on the Street is Watching podcast on April 8, 2025, DJ Slim urged Ghanaians not to criticise the guest for simply expressing an opinion.

He explained that the guest likely made the comment based on the perception that many musicians in Ghana are judged by their popularity.

“He has done well. I will always say this because he thinks King Sark’s career has ended. And I’m sure he’s used to how most of our award schemes are based on popular votes.

“Therefore, an artiste who is louder in a year gets voted as Artiste of the Year. So he thinks the same logic applies to the Grammys, when in fact, it doesn’t,” DJ Slim stated.

He added that the guest may have made such a statement based on his expectations for Sarkodie’s career trajectory.

“I think he made those statements because he was expecting a certain level of growth from Sarkodie,” he added.

DJ Slim’s remarks were in response to a recent TV3 show where guests discussed which Ghanaian artistes realistically stand a chance of winning a Grammy award.

During the conversation, Sarkodie’s name came up, prompting one guest to declare that his career had come to an end.

Ntim Fordjour demands Kwakye Ofosu’s resignation over flight allegations

0

Assin South MP Rev John Ntim Fordjour and Government communications minister Felix Kwakye Ofosu Assin South MP Rev John Ntim Fordjour and Government communications minister Felix Kwakye Ofosu

The Ranking Member of Parliament’s Defence and Interior Committee and Member of Parliament for Assin South, Reverend John Ntim Fordjour, has claimed vindication over recent allegations raised by the Minority Caucus regarding suspicious flights recorded at Kotoka International Airport.

According to the MP, who has been central to claims of money laundering and drug trafficking linked to these flights, inconsistencies identified by Fact-Check Ghana in the narrative provided by Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Minister of State for Government Communications, suggest a deliberate attempt to conceal criminal activity.

He has, therefore, demanded the resignation of Kwakye Ofosu, who also serves as the Member of Parliament for Abura Asebu Kwamankese.

“The Mighty Minority has been vindicated at last in the suspicious Gran Canaria Flights to Ghana. Government Spokesperson and Minister of State @FelixKwakyeOfo1 must resign for willfully publishing false evidence to cover crimes,” Ntim Fordjour wrote in an X post on April 8, 2025.

At a Minority press conference on April 1, 2025, Ntim Fordjour highlighted the arrival of two suspicious flights at Ghana’s Kotoka International Airport, alleging they were involved in drug trafficking and money laundering.

The flights in question, AirMed Flight N823AM and Cavok Air Antonov An-12B, arrived from Gran Canaria, Spain, in March 2025 and departed on March 25, 2025 after unusually extended stays.

Ntim Fordjour claimed that the air ambulance, intended for medical emergencies, showed no evidence of transporting patients and instead carried suspicious cargo, possibly cocaine and cash.

His allegations prompted President John Dramani Mahama to order an investigation, directing agencies such as the Narcotics Control Commission, Police CID, National Investigations Bureau, and National Security Coordinator to probe the matter.

Felix Kwakye Ofosu, seeking to counter Reverend Ntim Fordjour’s allegations, explained that the AirMed flight landed due to technical issues, specifically damaged tyres, requiring engineers and parts to be flown in, which justified its three-day stay.

He also claimed the Cavok flight carried oil drills and jerrycans of oil, not illicit cargo, and shared images and footage on social media on April 6, 2025 to support his narrative, urging the public not to be misled by claims of drug trafficking or money laundering.

However, Fact-Check Ghana and other critics have pointed out inconsistencies in his account.

Firstly, Kwakye Ofosu’s explanation of the AirMed flight’s registration number has drawn scrutiny; initial reports and Ntim Fordjour cited N823AM, yet some government statements referenced variations like NH23AM or N864AM, raising questions about accuracy.

Additionally, while portions of Kwakye Ofosu’s narrative align with available records of the flights’ travel histories, Fact-Check Ghana has confirmed that open-source data on AirMed N823AM’s flight activity history shows no evidence supporting the minister’s claim that the flight stopped in Luanda, Angola, before arriving in Ghana.

‘We are looking for partnership to establish a national airline’ – Transport minister

0

Plans underway to establish a national airline Plans underway to establish a national airline

Ghana has not had a national airline for nearly two decades, since Ghana Airways became defunct.

In light of this, the Minister for Transport, Joseph Bukari Nikpe, has disclosed the government’s intention to seek partnerships to establish a new national airline.

According to him, the current state of the economy makes it difficult for the government to undertake the project independently.

He made this known during an engagement with the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority, where he mentioned that a shortlist of potential partners will soon be revealed.

“You are aware that we inherited a challenged economy, and for now, we cannot establish a national airline. So, we are looking for a partnership. You know, when it comes to partnerships, it will take time. We have to know who they are to partner with you to bring in a national carrier that will fly for a very long time,” he was quoted by CitiNewsroom.com.

Ghana Airways, the country’s official national airline, operated from 1958 until it ceased operations in 2004.

It was succeeded by Ghana International Airlines, which served as the national carrier from 2005 to 2010 before becoming inactive.

The need to revive a national airline has become increasingly pressing as Ghana’s airspace continues to expand.

A look at Ghanaian players with the most Premier League relegations

0

From left, Andre Ayew, Salisu Mohammed, Kamaldeen and Jordan Ayew From left, Andre Ayew, Salisu Mohammed, Kamaldeen and Jordan Ayew

Relegation is every footballer’s nightmare; a brutal reminder of how unforgiving football can be. Over the years, the Premier League has become a dream destination for many Ghanaian footballers.

But for some, it has also been a place of heartbreak, marked not by medals, but by the sting of relegation. For a few, that pain has become all too familiar.

In this piece, we take a look at the Ghanaian players who know the pain of relegation more than most.

Kamaldeen Sulemana (2022/23 and 2024/25)

The forward joined Southampton from Rennes in January 2023 and has already been relegated twice in two seasons. His first relegation came during his debut Premier League campaign in 2022/23.

His signing was expected to bolster the Saints’ fight for survival. However, Southampton couldn’t avoid the drop and finished bottom of the standings.

A season later, they earned promotion back to the Premier League, but their struggles continued.

Tottenham’s 3-1 win over Southampton on Sunday, April 6, 2025, condemned Sulemana to another relegation, his second in three seasons at the club.

Jordan Ayew (2015/16 and 2017/18)

The Black Stars captain is the only Ghanaian player to have suffered relegation in the Premier League with two different clubs, first with Aston Villa in the 2015/16 season, and again with Swansea City in 2017/18.

Although he had a decent debut campaign, Ayew’s seven goals were not enough to keep Aston Villa up.

Despite that setback, his performances earned him a move to Swansea City ahead of the 2016/17 season. He played 14 games in his debut season with the Swans, scoring once and providing three assists.

The following season, he scored seven goals and added two assists, but it still wasn’t enough to prevent relegation.

With Leicester City in a relegation battle this season, Ayew could become the Ghanaian player with the most Premier League relegations if the Foxes drop to the Championship.

Dennis Odoi (2018/19 and 2020/21)

Nicknamed “The Professor” in the Black Stars camp for his meticulousness and attention to detail, Odoi has also suffered two Premier League relegations.

After two seasons in the Championship, the 36-year-old made his Premier League debut in the 2018/19 season. However, Fulham finished 19th and went down.

They returned to the top flight in 2020/21, but again failed to survive, finishing 18th. Odoi played only three matches that season due to injury.

Those who’ve suffered just once (but once is enough)

Mohammed Salisu

Now at AS Monaco, he experienced his only Premier League relegation with Southampton in 2022/23, when the club finished bottom with just 25 points.

André Ayew

Jordan Ayew’s older brother, he suffered relegation with Swansea City in 2017/18, despite being the club’s record signing at the time.

Daniel Amartey

Part of the Leicester City squad relegated in 2022/23. just seven years after their historic Premier League title win.

Derek Boateng

A member of the Fulham squad that went down in the 2013/14 season under Felix Magath. He made just three appearances as the team finished 19th.

Kevin-Prince Boateng

Despite a decorated career, he endured relegation with Portsmouth, playing 22 matches and scoring three goals under Avram Grant.

Defense and Interior Committee to support Ntim Fordjour in providing evidence of drug trafficking claim – Toobu

0

Vice Chairman of the Defense and Interior Committee in Parliament, Superintendent Peter Lanchenie Toobu, has expressed the Committee’s readiness to support Ntim Fordjour in providing evidence for his recent drug trafficking allegations at Kotoka International Airport (KIA).

Mr. Toobu disclosed that while Committee members are typically expected not to make public security-related matters, his colleague, Rev. Fordjour, violated these rules when he publicly aired his claims about drug trafficking and money laundering at the airport.

Rev. Ntim Fordjour, the Ranking Member on the Defense and Interior Committee, recently claimed that intelligence sources indicated an air ambulance and a private jet had arrived at KIA on March 12 from Gran Canaria, Spain, a region known for drug trafficking and money laundering activities.

In response, Government Spokesperson Felix Kwakye Ofosu dismissed the claims made by the Member of Parliament for Assin South, urging Rev. Fordjour to provide evidence to support his allegations.

Though Fordjour has yet to produce any evidence, he has expressed doubts about the government’s explanation of the situation.

Speaking on , Mr. Toobu emphasized that Rev. Fordjour had violated the Committee’s rules by going public with sensitive information.

“When it comes to security, members on the Defense and Interior Committee are not supposed to go public no matter what information you have. The information is shared with the Committee and the Minister, and where members are not satisfied, it is taken to the floor of Parliament. So, Rev. Ntim Fordjour violated the Committee rules,” Toobu stated.

However, Toobu made it clear that despite this breach, the Committee remains supportive of Rev. Fordjour.

“Rev. Ntim Fordjour is still a member of the Committee, and we will rally behind him if he is invited to provide evidence for his claims of drug trafficking and money laundering at the airport.”

The Wa West lawmaker further explained that the Defense and Interior Committee is a sensitive body, and recalled how his colleague, Kennedy Agyapong, maintained discretion during his tenure as Chairman.

“That’s why we all knew how vocal Kennedy is, but when he was Chairman of that Committee, he never took anything out. That is how members are required to behave.”

Mr. Toobu concluded by saying he would not be surprised if Rev. Fordjour eventually provides evidence to back his claims but would be shocked if no evidence materializes after the public allegations.

2 Die In Gang Fight

0

TWO PEOPLE have been confirmed dead and five others have sustained severe body injuries, following a bloody brawl between two gangs at Wiamoase, in the Ashanti Region on Saturday.

The two gangs are said to be from Wiamoase and Ntonso, and they reportedly fought over a flimsy issue during the funeral rites of one Richlove, a young lady at Wiamoase, leading to casualties.

The Ntonso gang, who had travelled to Wiamoase to attend the funeral, reportedly, referred to one of their men as ‘Hero’. They were then seen following that man, amid shouts of “Hero, Hero, Hero” at the funeral grounds.

This development was said to have infuriated the Wiamoase gang, who are the local people, as they felt the action of the Ntonso gang on their land (Wiamoase) was a gross disrespect and an insult to them.

So in retaliation, the Wiamoase gang also pointed at one of their men as the real ‘Hero’. They, reportedly, also started shouting “Hero, Hero, Hero” as they followed that man at the funeral grounds.

This sparked a free-for-all fight between the Wiamoase and Ntonso gangs. The Ntonso gang, who were said to be armed with guns, allegedly, started to fire warning shots indiscriminately, sending fear and panic into the mourners.

The Wiamoase gang felt humiliated by the gunshots that were fired by the Ntonso gang, so they (Wiamoase gang) also brandished sharp machetes. The two gangs then openly fought, leading to two deaths and five injuries.

The Assemblyman for Wiamoase Amangoase Area, Williams Adamu,  who confirmed the report, said the death toll was initially pegged at four “but I can confirm that only two deaths and five injuries have been confirmed.”

According to him, the two people who lost their lives were from the Ntonso gang, whilst the five injured people were also from the Wiamoase gang, who were rushed to the hospital for medical treatment.

The Wiamoase Amoangoase Assemblyman said five people have been arrested by the police in connection with the bloody fight, adding that police have since Saturday evening been patrolling Wiamoase to avert another fight.

Don’t let Twitter polls deceive you; topping Nigerian charts isn’t worth celebrating – Burna Boy tells artists

0

Grammy Award-winning Nigerian artist Damini Ogulu, aka Burna Boy, has advised fellow musicians to reconsider their excitement over topping music charts in Nigeria, highlighting poor financial returns.

In an Instagram story shared on Tuesday, Burna Boy explained that one million streams in Nigeria generate only about $300 to $400, which he noted is far less than what artists earn for the same number of streams in the UK, US, or Europe. For comparison, artists in those regions reportedly earn between £3,000 and £3,000. £4,000, $4,000, and €3,000 and €4,000, respectively.

The ‘last last’ crooner pointed out that having the number 1 song on a Nigerian streaming platform is not something to celebrate. He encouraged artists to set higher goals or diversify into other businesses to secure better financial rewards.

“Your song being number 1 on any streaming platform in Nigeria is not something to celebrate. Aim higher or do other businesses on the side. I type with love,” Burna Boy wrote.

In an earlier post, Burna Boy warned artists not to be misled by online polls or the support of Nigerian social media users. He stressed that virtual engagement rarely translates into real-world success, such as sold-out concerts or international stadium crowds.

“Dear artists, don’t let Twitter polls and ‘Naija social media fans’ deceive you. They won’t fill up any stadium for you in any part of the world,” he cautioned.

Request Bagbin to release Ntim Fordjour for probe – Wa West MP advises security agents

0

Vice Chairperson of the Defence and Interior Committee of Parliament Peter Lanchene Toobu has urged the security agencies to request the release of his colleague, Reverend John Ntim Fordjour, by the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, for investigation.

This follows recent claims by the Assin South MP and Ranking Member of Parliament’s Committee on Defence and Interior, that two foreign aircraft, AirMed Flight N823AM and Cavok Air Antonov An-12B, transported cocaine into Ghana.

Interior Minister tasks GIS to be proactive in deporting foreigners in galamsey, other crimes

0

Interior Minister Muntaka Mubarak has called on the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) to take a more proactive approach in addressing the increasing involvement of foreign nationals in illegal mining (galamsey) and other fraudulent activities.

During a recent visit to the GIS office in Kumasi, he highlighted the need for stronger enforcement and closer collaboration with the Police and other agencies to expedite deportations.

“We have made the decision to take tough actions against foreigners involved in illegal activities, especially those engaged in galamsey or cutting down trees, as well as those involved in fraud, commonly known as sakawa,” he said. “For these two crimes, our main goal is not prosecution; we are focused on deporting these individuals back to their home countries.”

He explained the deportation process. “If a foreigner is caught engaging in these illegal activities, we must ensure they are swiftly deported and placed on a stop list. We cannot allow them to continue harming our country,” he stressed.

He further emphasised the importance of quick action from GIS. “The Police, Military, or National Security may make the arrests, but once they do, GIS must act immediately. Do not wait for the handover. You need to demand that the detainees be transferred quickly to ensure the process is expedited,” he told the GIS officers.

Interior Minister also addressed the issue of deportation costs, making it clear that the government will not bear these expenses.

“We will not pay for repatriation. I have informed all embassies that they are responsible for covering the costs of sending their citizens back home. For example, in a recent case with a Ugandan national, we instructed the Ugandan embassy to purchase the ticket and arrange for the return of their citizen ” he revealed.

He reassured GIS officers, saying, “Rest assured, we have your back, we will support you. Our priority is to protect our country.”

New rules set for Okada riders in Ghana; only 25-year-olds and above can ride

0

Persons willing to operate a commercial motorcycle or tricycle, popularly known as ‘okada’, can only do so if they belong to a recognised tricycle transport union or are employed by a licensed commercial motorcycle company.

The provision to prohibit operations without belonging to a recognised union and the need for riders to be at least 25 years of age is part of the new Legislative Instrument (LI) being draughted to amend the existing one, Road Traffic Regulations, 2012 (Legislative Instrument 2180).

Speaking at a national stakeholder consultation in Accra on Monday [7 April 2025] on a draft LI 2180, the Minister of Transport, Joseph Bukari Nikpe, said the government was introducing a new licensing regime to enhance monitoring of commercial motorcycles and tricycles and ensure that operators met the necessary competency standards.

“Our utmost priority is the safety and welfare of the riders and passengers.

Therefore, some provisions in the regulations will cover the mandatory use of helmets, periodic inspections and rider training,” Nikpe said at the meeting, which was the first of a nationwide consultation to review LI 2180 to pave way for the official operationalisation of okada, a thriving business among the youth.

The consultative meeting brought together representatives from the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service, the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU), the association of okada riders, heads of relevant agencies and departments, industry practitioners, civil society organisations and transport operators.

Proposed provisions

“A person shall not ride or operate a commercial motorcycle or tricycle unless that person is employed by or belongs to a licensed commercial motorcycle or tricycle transport union,” the new provisions propose.

Anybody who flouts the provision, when it becomes law, by operating “a motorcycle or tricycle for fare-paying passenger services in contravention of sub-regulation (1) commits an offence and is liable to pay a fine of 100 penalty units or to a term of imprisonment or both”.

Background

Motorcycles and tricycles have become a crucial part of our transport ecosystem over the past decade.

They are especially useful for last-mile journeys and in areas where traditional para-transit vehicles (tro-tro) and taxis find it challenging to go; they do the job.

In some of our urban centres, mostly in the northern part of the country, motorcycles and tricycles have literally replaced traditional public transport vehicles.

However, as their popularity had surged over the years, so had the challenges associated with their use, the Transport Minister said.

“We have witnessed increasing road traffic crashes and fatalities involving motorcycles and tricycles.

There are also concerns over safety regulations, disregard of road traffic laws, and the pressing need for a structured approach to governance in this sector,” Mr Nikpe pointed out.

Committee

Since the  2016 electioneering, President John Dramani Mahama pledged to implement effective regulations of commercial use of motorcycles and tricycles for improved safety, job security and welfare of riders.

Last month, the Minister of Transport constituted a 13-member committee made up of officers from the Office of the Attorney General and Ministry of Justice, the Ministry of Youth Development and Empowerment, the Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) and the National Road Safety Authority, chaired by the Ministry of Transport.

The committee was tasked with developing a draft regulatory framework for the use of motorcycles and tricycles for fare-paying passenger services with a focus on safety, inclusivity and innovation.

Following a series of engagements, the committee developed a draft regulatory framework which was presented to stakeholders yesterday.

Purpose

Nikpe said the stakeholder consultation was to elicit grassroots information to shape the regulations that had been developed.

He urged the participants to discuss the issues dispassionately and recommend practical measures for adoption and consequent implementation.

“Through this dialogue, we hope to develop a comprehensive and robust regulatory framework that will stand the test of time for the consideration of Parliament,” he stated.

Other provisions

The draft regulatory framework proposes that a person is qualified to engage in commercial motorcycle or tricycle operations if that person is incorporated under the Companies Act, 2019 (Act 992) as a limited liability company, partnership, union, society, cooperative or other similar association.

The Head of Road Transport Services at the Ministry of Transport, Daniel Essel, who presented the draft regulatory framework, said the operator (person or entity) must have a physical presence in at least eight administrative regions and have a minimum fleet size of 50 in each of the regions or as may be determined by the regulatory authority in consultation with the Minister of Transport (the Minister).

The operators must also have a standard union dress code as approved by the regulatory authority and meet other conditions as the regulatory authority may prescribe in collaboration with the DVLA and the district assembly.

While the riders are required to obtain a licence and renew it every two years, a commercial motorcycle or tricycle union shall renew its licence annually by paying a prescribed fee and satisfying the conditions determined by the regulatory authority.

The unions would also be enjoined to comply with the code of conduct approved by the Minister.

A commercial motorcycle/tricycle union is also enjoined to organise re-training or refresher courses for its riders at least once a year in consultation with the regulatory authority.

All permitted members of the union shall be enrolled on an electronic database as prescribed by the regulatory authority.

District assemblies

The regulation also gives a district assembly the right to grant a commercial motorcycle or tricycle union a permit to operate in the locality upon the payment of a prescribed fee and satisfaction of the conditions determined by the assembly in consultation with the regulatory authority.

With that permit, the district assembly must designate or approve areas as terminals and stands in the locality.

Essel said a commercial motorcycle or tricycle union shall promptly investigate and keep on file a record of any circumstances in which the Code of Conduct was violated, as such breaches would attract penalties.

Riders

The riders would also be enjoined to have a valid commercial rider’s licence issued by the DVLA and the applicant shall be, at least, 25 years of age and must possess a valid National Identification Card.

They must also pass a commercial motorcycle/tricycle riding proficiency test, an oral test, a theoretical test and an eye test.

After completing training on the riders’ syllabus and manual, they shall be assigned and registered with an identification mark – a distinctive yellow licence plate with black lettering.

They will also wear a certified protective helmet with a unique number affixed on the back of the helmet; the riders must always make available a certified protective helmet for use by the pillion rider, and they must adhere to all traffic laws and speed limits, among others.

Keta, (V/R), April 08, GNA – Mr. Emmanuel Kwaku Tay, the Constituency Secretary of the NDC in Keta Constituency, has called on all Assembly Members to set aside individual differences and rally behind the President’s nominee for Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Mr. Wisdom Bondiu Seade.

Speaking to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) Monday evening during an exclusive interaction, Mr. Tay who was among the shortlisted aspirants for the MCE position, publicly declared his unwavering support for Mr. Seade’s nomination, emphasising the need for unity and a renewed development focus for the municipality.

“Though I had high hopes of being nominated for the position, I recognize that leadership is about service, and only one person can be chosen at a time,” Mr. Tay stated.

“I fully respect the President’s decision and wholeheartedly support Mr. Seade’s candidacy. Keta is at a crossroads and urgently needs a new developmental direction. That vision can only be achieved through collective support and unity.”

Mr. Tay also praised Mr. Seade’s leadership qualities, describing him as a competent and dedicated individual who shares a deep commitment to the progress of Keta.

“I’ve worked closely with Mr. Seade over the years as part of the NDC Constituency Executive team. He is industrious, humble, focused and hardworking. I believe he has what it takes to implement the President’s vision and reset Keta onto a path of growth and prosperity,” he added.

Mr. Tay further appealed to all Assembly Members to give Mr. Seade their full support during the confirmation vote scheduled for Thursday, April 9.

“I expect nothing less than a 100 percent endorsement. This is not the time for divisions. Keta deserves progress, and it starts with us endorsing a capable leader,” he emphasized.

Meanwhile, several Assembly Members who spoke to the GNA also expressed their readiness to vote in favor of Mr. Seade’s confirmation. They described the upcoming vote as a crucial step toward revitalizing the municipality, which they say has experienced stagnation in recent years.

“We’ve lost valuable time due to delays in leadership appointments. Confirming Mr. Seade without resistance will allow development projects and policy implementation to commence without further setbacks,” one Assembly Member remarked.

Mr Wisdom Bondiu Seade who is the Assemblymember for Anyako electoral area and the chairman for the NDC in the Keta Constituency has been nominated by the President as the Municipal Chief Executive for Keta

All the 22 members of the Keta Municipal Assembly will convene on Thursday, April 10, to vote on the endorsement of Mr. Wisdom Bondiru Seade. Observers believe that Mr. Tay’s public support, despite being a former contender, may significantly influence the Assembly’s decision and foster a spirit of unity going forward.

Cooperate on ‘suspicious flights’ probe

0

The Deputy Director-General of the Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC), Alexander Twum Barimah, has urged the Ranking Member on the Defence Committee and Member of Parliament for Assin South, Rev. John Ntim Fordjour, to fully cooperate with the Commission and other security agencies in investigations into allegations of “suspicious flights.”

Speaking on Joy News on Tuesday, April 8, Barimah encouraged the MP to provide all relevant information to aid in a thorough and effective resolution of the matter.

“I will advise my good friend and brother that he should cooperate with us if he really wants us to get to the root of this matter,” Barimah stated during the interview.

He emphasized that collaboration is critical to identifying and prosecuting anyone involved in illicit activities.

“To apprehend or arrest any other person who is involved in his so-called suspicious act, he should cooperate with us, the security agencies, to make sure that we get the appropriate or required information and act on it,” he added.

Barimah’s remarks highlight NACOC’s commitment to accountability and its intent to investigate all allegations thoroughly in the interest of transparency and national security.

I was part of the screening team; no drugs were found – Deputy NACOC boss

0

Deputy Director of Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC), Twum Barimah, has revealed that he was part of the security team that inspected two aircraft at Kotoka International Airport (KIA) for suspected drug trafficking.

He confirmed that all necessary checks were followed, but no drugs were found.

Speaking on Adom FM’s Burning Issues, Twum Barimah explained that he was present when the planes landed and oversaw the inspection, which included the use of sniffing dogs by NACOC.

He also noted that the Immigration Service conducted their own checks, but found no illicit substances.

The controversy arose after Assin South MP, Rev. Ntim Fordjour, raised concerns about two aircraft—the Air MED flight L823 AM and the private jet Antonov 12B—alleging that they were involved in suspicious activities at KIA. Rev. Fordjour claimed that the air ambulance, which landed on March 20, 2025, remained in Ghana for five days without carrying any patients, and suggested it was transporting cocaine and cash.

He also raised concerns about the Antonov 12B, which landed on March 12, 2025, and remained in Ghana for 13 days before departing on March 25, 2025.

However, Twum Barimah questioned why Rev. Fordjour has not provided evidence to support his claims, casting doubts on the visuals released by the Minister of State in charge of Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu.

According to Barimah, NACOC followed all the proper procedures during the inspection, including using trained dogs to check the planes, but nothing suspicious was found.

Meanwhile, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, in response to Rev. Fordjour’s allegations, dismissed them as baseless.

In a video posted on social media, he accused the MP of spreading disinformation in an attempt to undermine public trust in the government.

The government spokesperson urged the public to disregard the allegations and called on Rev. Fordjour to provide evidence to back up his claims.

As the controversy continues to unfold, the focus remains on whether Rev. Fordjour will produce the necessary evidence to support his claims, or if the accusations will be dismissed as mere speculation.

Fact Check Ghana weighs in on suspicious flights saga amid government, opposition clash

0

As controversy swells around a series of suspicious cargo and air ambulance flights that recently landed in Ghana, Kwaku Krobea Asante, the Team Lead at Fact Check Ghana, has urged caution and clarity in interpreting the emerging narratives from both the government and the opposition.

Speaking on the Asaase Breakfast Show on Tuesday (8 April), Asante emphasised that while Fact Check Ghana lacks investigative powers beyond journalistic methods, his team has verified key aspects of the story through open-source flight tracking platforms such as FlightAware, FlightRadar24, and AirNav.

The flights in question

At the centre of the storm are four flights, two of which were mentioned by Deputy Education Minister Rev. John Ntim Fordjour and former Deputy Information Minister Felix Ofosu Kwakye in opposing press conferences. These include:

  1. AirMed NH23AM – An air ambulance owned by AirMed International in the U.S., which landed in Ghana on March 20th from Gran Canaria, Spain, at 9:02 a.m. GMT.

  2. AirMed N864AM – A sister aircraft that reportedly brought in spare parts, landed on 22 March, and returned the same day — but later circled back to Ghana after routing through Angola and a private airport in Johannesburg.

Asante confirmed the timelines and flight paths of both AirMed flights, noting the unusual five-day stay of NH23AM in Ghana — a deviation from its typically brisk travel schedule. While government officials suggested the aircraft developed a fault, no evidence confirming this has been independently verified by Fact-Check Ghana.

He pointed out discrepancies in Ofosu Kwakye’s claims that the NH23AM flight passed through Rwanda and Angola before landing in Ghana. “All available flight history shows the plane flew directly from Gran Canaria to Kotoka,” Asante clarified.

Cargo Flights: More questions than answers

The other two flights under scrutiny are cargo aircraft operated by Ukrainian-based Cavok Air:

  1. CVK7037 – Allegedly carried classified goods or cash.

  2. CVK7007 – Said to have come in to assist the CVK7037 aircraft.

Asante admitted that the team could not confirm whether CVK7037 landed in Ghana. “There’s no travel history after December 18th for that plane. It could mean many things, but we can’t conclusively say it never arrived,” he said.

However, CVK7007 was tracked flying from Harare, Zimbabwe, to Accra on 15 March, aligning somewhat with the government’s timeline. Still, the absence of departure data for either aircraft leaves significant gaps.

Discrepancies in government communication

Asante noted several omissions in the government’s narrative, particularly from Minister of Government Communications Felix Ofosu Kwakye.

“What we discovered — and the minister didn’t mention — is that AirMed N864AM returned to Ghana the day after leaving, after making stops in Luanda and at a private airport in Johannesburg,” he explained.

While not suggesting deception, Asante emphasised the importance of transparency. “We are not making accusations. We just stick to the facts, and the travel history tells a more complex story.”

What’s inside the planes? Nobody knows

Despite mounting public concern about the aircraft’s contents, Asante made it clear that there is no way — using open-source platforms — to verify what the flights were carrying. “Unless someone from the inside shares that information, it’s not publicly accessible,” he said.

He added that his team is investigating other aspects of the case, including whether servicing records exist to confirm the government’s claim that one aircraft developed a fault while on the tarmac in Accra. They are also probing the assertion that Ghana was chosen over Rwanda due to limitations in screening standards at Rwandan airports.

The verdict so far

According to Asante, Fact-Check Ghana’s investigations validate the physical presence of some of the aircraft in Ghana and confirm several aspects of both the government’s and opposition’s claims. However, the lack of data on cargo, discrepancies in travel paths, and the use of private airports introduce uncertainty.

“This is an evolving story,” Asante concluded. “There are still questions to be answered, and we’re working to get to the bottom of them.”

Netizens fume over Medikal’s ‘Ghanaians as lazy’ statement

0

Ghanaian rapper Medikal has become the centre of attention after making a tweet online referring to most Ghanaians as lazy.

In a post shared on X on April 7, 2025, Medikal stated that some Ghanaians, especially the youth, are lazy and have refused to find ways of making a living.

He emphasised that instead of working to achieve something meaningful in life, such individuals are jealous of hardworking people.

“Most Ghanaians are lazy, so they hate hardworking people for no reason. Lol,” he wrote.

The tweet has sparked mixed reactions, with some social media users expressing displeasure over the rapper’s statement.

While some netizens have thrown their support behind him, others have heavily criticised him.

The critics have also revived rumours that Medikal is involved in “fraud,” adding that if it weren’t for fraudulent money, he wouldn’t be financially comfortable enough to label others, who aren’t as fortunate as him, as lazy.

Suspend Chief Justice Torkornoo if there is a case for her removal – Ansa-Asare to Mahama

0

(L-R) President John Dramani Mahama, Kwaku Ansa-Asare and Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo (L-R) President John Dramani Mahama, Kwaku Ansa-Asare and Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo

Statesman Kwaku Ansa-Asare has urged President John Dramani Mahama to suspend Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo if there is indeed a case for her removal.

According to a report by myjoyonline.com, Ansa-Asare, a former Director of the Ghana School of Law, said it would be improper for Justice Torkornoo to remain in office if there is a legitimate basis for her removal.

He stated that if a committee is established to investigate the petitions for her removal, her continued stay in office could interfere with the process.

He indicated that Article 146 of the 1992 Constitution obliges the president to suspend the Chief Justice under such circumstances.

“The moment the committee is set up, the President is then obliged to (may) suspend the Chief Justice, and I think it is fair.

“While the committee is inquiring into the allegation, the Chief Justice cannot remain in office because there is a likelihood of interference, and therefore, she has to step aside,” he is quoted as saying.

However, the legal luminary also noted that if the petitions against the Chief Justice have no merit, the president should dismiss them.

“If the petition is frivolous, then there is no need to set up a committee. But when the petition has some merit, and a prima facie case has been made, then the President will be right to suspend the Chief Justice,” he reiterated.

Meanwhile, Chief Justice Torkornoo has submitted her official response to the petitions seeking her removal from office, as of Monday, April 7, 2025.

According to a report by 3news.com, Justice Torkornoo submitted her response to President John Dramani Mahama and the Council of State before the expiration of a 10-day deadline given by the president after the petitions were filed.

The report noted that with her response now submitted, the Council of State will begin the review process to determine whether a prima facie case exists to warrant further proceedings.

President Mahama had given Justice Torkornoo 10 working days to respond to the three separate petitions seeking her removal.

In a letter dated March 27, 2025, Justice Torkornoo requested copies of the petitions and asked for at least seven days to respond, in line with due process requirements.

On March 25, 2025, President Mahama began consultations with the Council of State following the submission of the three petitions seeking the removal of Chief Justice Gertrude Sackey Torkornoo.

According to a statement from the Minister for Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, the petitions were forwarded to the Council of State in accordance with the constitutional procedure outlined in Article 146 of the 1992 Constitution.

While the details of the petitions remain undisclosed, the development marks the beginning of a formal process that could potentially lead to significant changes within Ghana’s judicial system.

How José Mourinho convinced Wesley Sneijder to join Inter Milan from Real Madrid

0

Mourinho (L) and Sneijder (R) Mourinho (L) and Sneijder (R)

When Wesley Sneijder made the move from Real Madrid to Inter Milan in 2009, it was a transfer that raised many eyebrows.

However, behind the scenes, it wasn’t just a change of clubs; it was the result of a masterstroke in persuasion by none other than José Mourinho.

The Special One worked his magic to bring the Dutch playmaker to the Italian giants, convincing him to turn down multiple offers.

Sneijder had joined Madrid in 2007 as one of the brightest talents in European football following an impressive spell with Ajax.

However, his time at the club was hindered by managerial changes, intense competition for spots, and high expectations.

Despite some standout performances, particularly in his first season, where he contributed several important goals, Sneijder was often relegated to a supporting role rather than becoming the main man.

With the risk of an underwhelming stint at Madrid overshadowing his career, Mourinho made a move for the Dutchman that would define his career in Italy.

In an interview with transfer guru Fabrizio Romano, Sneijder shared how the iconic manager convinced him to make the bold switch, with Mourinho’s words and vision for his role playing a pivotal part in his decision.

“He was calling me directly, and he really convinced me. He said, ‘We have a strong team, but the missing part is a number ten, and I really see you as the number ten in my team. If you come, my team is complete, and we can win everything,’” Sneijder recalled.

Mourinho stayed true to his words, guiding Sneijder and Inter to an unprecedented treble, winning the Serie A, Coppa Italia, and the Champions League in the 2009/10 season.

Sneijder’s performances, coupled with his exploits at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, where the Netherlands finished as runners-up, earned him fourth place on the Ballon d’Or podium.

Ato Forson blocks government contracts without prior approval from Finance Ministry

0

Government contracts will no longer be awarded without prior approval from the Ministry of Finance, beginning 3 April 2025.

This is according to the Minister for Finance, Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, who has issued a firm directive to all Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs).

The instruction, delivered during a meeting with Chief Directors and senior public officials, is aimed at tightening control over public expenditure and preventing the award of unauthorised contracts that often place unexpected pressure on the national budget.

“This is not business as usual,” Dr Forson said. “You cannot award contracts without the express approval of the Ministry of Finance. Every contract must now receive commencement authorisation. No commencement certificate, no procurement.”

He stated plainly that any breach of the directive would attract serious consequences, including possible imprisonment for ministers and chief directors who ignore the new procedure.

“This is not merely a bureaucratic process; it is a legal requirement,” Dr Forson said.

The directive is in line with the recently amended Public Financial Management Act, 2025, which introduces stricter measures to prevent fiscal indiscipline and hold individuals accountable for unauthorised spending.

According to Dr Forson, the Ministry of Finance will no longer bear the cost of commitments made outside of approved budgetary processes.

“The Ministry of Finance will no longer carry the weight of fiscal indiscipline alone,” he said. “If you are a principal spending officer and you violate this directive, you will be held personally accountable.”

Dr Forson urged public officials to uphold their responsibilities with integrity, warning that continued negligence and misuse of public resources would only worsen hardship for ordinary Ghanaians.

“We are among the privileged few; we must not continue to subject our people to hardship through negligence or abuse of public resources,” he said.

He added that restoring public trust in government begins with accountability and discipline in the management of the national budget, something he said must begin without delay.

Financial irregularities in public contracting have been a recurring concern in Ghana’s Auditor-General reports and have long been cited as a drain on public resources.

3 ECG Cable ‘Thieves’ Remanded

0

The Agona Swedru District Court in the Central Region has remanded into police custody three suspects arrested in connection with transportation of cables believed to be property of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).

The three suspects, Sulemana Mohammed, Iddrisu Basit and Isaac Zibo Imoro, were remanded for two weeks.

This is to enable the police conduct further investigation to unravel the circumstances under which the cables got to the suspects.

It would be recalled that an articulated truck transporting the cables suspected to be part ECG items was impounded at Gomoa Awombrew in the Gomoa Central Constituency of the Central Region.

The Central Regional Police Command confirmed the story and said initially two suspects were arrested in connection with the transportation of the cables

The police, with the help of ECG officials, inspected the cargo, and the driver was unable to provide clear details about the goods’ origin or destination, while the waybill was also suspicious.

ECG officials, after a thorough check, confirmed the cables matched their missing stock, leading to the arrest of the suspects.

Two of the suspects, Mohammed Sulemana and Iddrisu Basit, both driver’s mates of the articulated truck, were first arrested.

The police said the truck, with registration number GC 7410-11, was found parked with 28 rims of ECG cables onboard.

According to a statement from the police, ECG officials, led by their Operations Officer, David Ackom, confirmed the cables’ ownership but noted that no such consignment was expected in the area.

The statement indicated that the truck was under police guard at Gomoa Awombrew while efforts were underway to arrest the truck driver, one Zibo Imoro, who fled from the scene. He was later arrested.

This development comes amid growing controversy surrounding the disappearance of over 1,300 containers of ECG items at the Tema Port.

Following an intelligence-led operation by National Security, 14 individuals, including four Ghanaians and 10 Chinese nationals, have also been arrested and are assisting with investigations.

Ghana’s Democracy: A crisis of integrity

0

Parliament House of Ghana Parliament House of Ghana

Ghana’s democracy, though over thirty years in practice, still shows signs of immaturity—most evident in how political parties manipulate narratives and apply double standards depending on whether they are in power or opposition.

The country’s continued progress on democratic indices hinges not on superficial achievements but on a foundation of honesty, accountability, and a commitment to national interest over partisan gain. Unfortunately, political behaviour suggests the opposite:

once a party moves into opposition, it often adopts an anti-national stance. Suddenly, nothing about Ghana seems worth defending unless it serves their narrative. National discourse becomes saturated with partisan spin, and in the end, the country suffers.

Take the handling of urgent national issues like illegal mining (galamsey) or youth unemployment. These are not prioritised. Instead, the focus is on blame games and avoiding responsibility. Political leadership is increasingly seen not as a duty to serve, but as the quickest path to personal wealth.

The recent cocaine bust is a perfect example. Rather than transparency and action, we are seeing the usual script: denials, deflections, and blame-shifting. Even when failures are apparent, government responses are more about saving face than serving truth.

Why can’t the government be honest with the people? Why cannot security agencies act without political interference? And why must the opposition distort facts to score political points?

We are witnessing a political culture in which truth is either hidden to protect an image or twisted to gain an advantage. This approach erodes public trust and undermines democracy.

If this is the way democratic governance continues—driven by self-preservation, dishonesty, and corruption—what future are we securing for the next generation? The obsession with political gain over national development is rotting our institutions.

Will Ghana ever see leaders who tell the truth, even when inconvenient? Leaders who prioritise the nation over the party? Leaders who treat democracy as a responsibility, not a tool for personal profit?

Only time will tell if we can reverse the damage. But without integrity at the core of leadership, Ghana’s democracy will remain vulnerable—and so will its future.

AWA to begin direct flight to Ouagadougou from June 3

0

Africa World Airlines (AWA) has embarked on a significant mission to launch direct flights between Accra and Ouagadougou.

With the first flight scheduled for June 3, 2025, this new route is poised to close a critical gap in regional air travel, offering a vital link between two neighbouring nations and signaling a new chapter in African regional integration.

President John Dramani Mahama’s declaration envisioning a direct air link between Accra and Ouagadougou sparked this initiative to strengthen ties between the two nations.

With Africa World Airlines (AWA) as a member of the International Air Transport Association (IATA) and a proven track record on key African routes—including Lagos, Abuja, Monrovia, Abidjan, and Freetown—AWA was the natural choice to bring this vision to life. And they have stepped up, with a delegation recently visiting Ouagadougou to finalize preparations for the much-anticipated service.

A Journey of Preparation: Laying the Groundwork for the Game-Changing Route

The critical phase of preparation was marked by a recent visit to Ouagadougou by a high-level delegation from Africa World Airlines, headed by Jonathan K. Appiah, the Head of Commercial. Alongside him were Josephine Ahadjie, the Head of Aviation Security; Gloria Vander-Pallen, the Service Quality Manager; and Patrick Gyamena, the Chief Flight Dispatcher.

Their mission was to familiarize themselves with the local environment, meet key stakeholders, and finalize preparations for the imminent launch of direct flights between Accra and Ouagadougou.

The team’s visit was a vital step in ensuring that the planned commercial flights, which will operate three times a week on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Sundays, are successful, offering passengers a convenient, fast alternative to the current cumbersome overland journey. The route’s introduction will save travellers from the gruelling hours of travel by road, often fraught with delays, unpredictable conditions, and long waits at border checkpoints.

The team met with several critical partners, including the Head of Ghana Missions, the Ghanaian community in Ouagadougou, the Agence Nationale de l’Aviation Civile (ANAC), and the Ministry of Transport to initiate the acquisition of flying permits. With the Bilateral Air Services Agreement (BASA) between the two countries, Africa World Airlines is well positioned to begin its operations without any regulatory hurdles, signaling safer and more efficient air travel. The team also engaged with the Airport Authorities and local travel agents, all of whom expressed overwhelming support for the new route.

An End to the Roadblocks: AWA’s Plan to Transform Regional Travel

Currently, the overland journey between Accra and Ouagadougou is nothing short of a nightmare for passengers. Depending on traffic and border conditions, the trip can take up to 12 hours, sometimes more. Travelers are forced to drive across the border, enduring endless hours on roads that are often in disrepair or clogged with traffic. For many, this journey is not only exhausting but fraught with uncertainty and stress.

Africa World Airlines intends to change all that. By offering a direct flight, AWA will drastically reduce travel time, allowing passengers to complete the journey in less than two hours. This new flight service not only facilitates faster, more efficient travel but also significantly boosts economic cooperation between the two countries, driving trade, tourism, and cross-border collaborations between the leaders of the two nations.

Building Stronger Bonds: AWA’s Commitment to Ghana-Burkina Faso Relations

In discussions with key stakeholders, it became clear that this new route was much more than just a transportation solution. Mr. Alhassan Abdulai Haruna, the Acting Head of the Ghana Mission in Burkina Faso, highlighted the immense potential for enhanced trade between the two countries. Burkina Faso, a landlocked nation, relies heavily on imports, and Ghana stands as a crucial trading partner. Direct flights will streamline the movement of goods, making it easier for businesses to thrive and for individuals to access essential services.

Daouda Abdoul Aziz W. A. Amoussa, Director General of Burkina Faso’s Civil Aviation Authority (ANAC), echoed these sentiments, offering his full backing and commitment to ensure the successful operation of the new service.

Meanwhile, Bertrand Toe, the Chief of Staff for the Ministry of Territorial Administration and Mobility, assured his full support in facilitating the launch, ensuring that all logistical and regulatory processes would be streamlined for a smooth introduction.

The Future of African Aviation Has Never Looked Brighter

In an exclusive interview, Jonathan Appiah, Head of Commercial for Africa World Airlines, expressed confidence in the viability of the new route, noting the lack of direct flights between Accra and Ouagadougou. He added that, “Africa World Airlines has a proven track record of connecting African cities. We know the region well, and our commitment to safety and efficiency is unmatched. We are excited to offer this much-needed service to the people of both Ghana and Burkina Faso.”

His confidence in the success of the new route is grounded in AWA’s experience in the African aviation sector. He emphasized that the airline is ready to meet the demands of the route, and that passengers should expect a seamless travel experience. He also took the opportunity to thank Africa World Airlines’ loyal customers, saying, “We are deeply grateful for the support our passengers have shown over the years. We are committed to providing them with the best possible service and bringing Africa closer together.”

Celebrating a New Beginning: AWA’s Commitment to Regional Unity

As the delegation wrapped up its successful trip to Ouagadougou, they left behind more than just plans for a new route. They left a promise: a promise that Africa World Airlines is committed to making Africa a more connected, integrated continent. The AWA team presented miniature aircraft models to key stakeholders as a gesture of gratitude for their unwavering support.

This new service is not just a victory for air travel; it is a symbol of what can be achieved when African nations come together. By making direct flights a reality, AWA is proving that connectivity within Africa doesn’t have to be a distant dream; it’s something that can be achieved today, starting with Ghana and Burkina Faso.

As June 3, 2025, approaches, the launch of the Accra-Ouagadougou flight will signify the dawn of a new age-defining moment in Africa’s aviation history, not just for AWA but for the entire continent. With this route, AWA is showing the world that Africa’s potential is limitless, and this is just the start of something bigger.

Personnel of the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) have intercepted 25 bags of cocoa beans being smuggled into Togo through the Kauk-Jago border in the Bunkpurugu enclave of the North East Region.

The bags of cocoa beans are believed to have been transported from southern Ghana to the north in a transit operation orchestrated by a syndicate that smuggles cocoa to neighbouring countries.

Acting on a tip-off, the personnel laid an ambush along the border and confiscated the goods.

Although the suspects managed to flee the scene, the officers successfully seized the cocoa beans, which were being illegally transported out of the country.

Confirmation

Confirming the incident to Graphic Online, the Bunkpurugu Sector Commander of GIS, Assistant Commissioner of Immigration (ACI) Edwin Adjetey Doku, said the goods have been handed over to the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) while investigations continue.

He explained: “We acted on credible intelligence about cocoa beans being smuggled from the Kauk-Jago area into Togo. My team quickly mobilised and intercepted the goods, although the drivers and two other individuals escaped.”

He reaffirmed his outfit’s commitment to protecting Ghana’s territorial borders and combating all forms of cross-border crime.

Support

ACI Doku also urged the public to support GIS efforts by reporting suspicious activities.

He emphasised the need for enhanced logistical support to effectively tackle the rising cases of smuggling in the area, stressing: “The Bunkpurugu Division urgently needs more resources to fight the persistent smuggling of goods across our borders.”

While those of us on the outside may see the gospel music industry to be full of love and peace, several Ghanaian gospel musicians have publicly criticised some various aspects of their industry.

From issues such as disunity, hypocrisy, ungodliness and finances, here are some gospel musicians who have spoken up against the gospel music industry.

Broda Sammy:

The outspoken gospel musician has been on various platforms accusing most of his colleagues in the industry of hypocrisy, disunity and lack of genuine spirituality.

He also accused many gospel artistes who compose songs in English of discriminating against their colleagues who write songs in the local dialect.

Mavis Asante:

In a conversation with GhanaWeb in 2024, the versatile gospel musician stated that a lack of love in the industry is holding back its progress.

“I think the only thing we lack as gospel musicians is love… If we are doing the work of God without love, then we have a problem,” she said.

Reverend Kwasi Boateng:

The veteran musician, in an interview in January 2025, rebutted claims by Prophet Nigel Gaisie that the Gospel music industry was united.

Citing his own experiences, Reverend Kwasi Boateng mentioned how none of his colleagues came to his assistance during a difficult moment in his life. Adding that “this cannot be a spirit of unity.”

Apostle Lenny Akpadie:

Apostle Lenny Akpadie did not hold back on what he saw as the canalisation of the gospel music industry in Ghana. Especially by the female artistes.

In a 2024 interview, he pointed fingers at some female gospel artistes who wear revealing dresses and talk about themselves and their brand more than the message of Christ.

“We are getting less and less of spiritualised sheep doing gospel music and introducing of the world,” he said.

Patience Nyarko:

In late 2023, after a call by Nigerian gospel musician Nathaniel Bassey for Ghanaian artistes to compose more songs in the industry, Patience Nyarko lambasted the industry for its ‘hypocritsy,’ stated how she faced backlash for advising her colleagues to focus on the message over language.

Bash Luks:

The CEO and founder of Lot Fire Records, stated that there was a decline in Gospel music due to a diminishing fear of God among many artistes.

He blamed it on the various temptations that the modern music industry faces, including “ungodly” lifestyles and a focus on material possessions.

What is next after CJ responds to Mahama over petition for her removal?

Private legal practitioner, Martin Kpebu, has enjoined President John Dramani Mahama and the Council of State to independently explore legal insights in the determination of prima facie case regarding the removal of Chief Justice Gertrude Sackey Torkornoo.

Responding to what should be the next line of action to be taken by the president on the impeachment process during an interview on Joy News on April 7, 2025, Kpebu indicated that exploring legal advice by the Council of State in the determination of a prima facie case will lend credibility to the impeachment process.

“The CJ has responded to the petitions; So, what next? Now, the president is going to consider the petition in consultation with the Council of State. Meaning they will give him advice and once it’s good, he will take it.

“It is important to state that the Agyei Twum v Attorney General even noted that the Council of State should get an independent legal advice from a reputable lawyer. This is to ensure that the counsel coming from the Council of State itself is great advice. So, as the media, you should be probing to find out if the council will be getting an independent lawyer to guide them; because this will lend a lot of credibility to the matter,” he said.

Drawing inferences from the past, Kpebu, cited that former President Nana Addo Dankwah Akufo-Addo, in his treatment of a similar petition from Professor Stephen Asare, practiced same.

“When former President Akufo-Addo was handling the case of the petition by Prof Stephen Asare, also known, as Kwaku Azar, his lawyer, Sam Okudzeto, came out to say that he wrote the opinion presented by the former president.

“So, President John Mahama’s counsel will engage him to determine a prima facie case; that is to say that they will find out if the allegations made in the petition is weighty enough and that the Chief Justice’s response does not make nonsense of these allegations made in the petition. Then a prima facie case is established,” he said.

Kpebu went on to clarify that President Mahama would make considerations on the matter by viewing responses from the council, alongside the responses from the Chief Justice to ascertain the validity of the allegation before taking further action.

He noted that after careful consideration of Council of State’ responses, and the president feels that the allegations are weighty; then a prima facie case is established, per Article I 46 clause 7.

“The president can then proceed by suspending the Chief Justice or setting a committee to investigate the allegations,” he added.

Kpebu’s reaction follows the Chief Justice Torkonoo’s response to the impeachment petition against her removal.

Background

On March 25, 2025, President John Dramani Mahama began consultations with the Council of State following the submission of three petitions seeking the removal of Chief Justice Gertrude Sackey Torkornoo.

According to a statement from the Minister of State in charge of Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, the three petitions were forwarded to the Council of State in accordance with the constitutional procedure outlined in Article 146 of the 1992 Constitution.

While the details of the petitions remain undisclosed, the development marks the beginning of a formal process that could potentially lead to significant changes within Ghana’s judicial system.

‘Finance ministry must authorise all government contracts’ – Ato Forson declares

The Minister of Finance, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, has announced that, effective April 3, 2025, all government contracts must receive prior authorisation from the Ministry of Finance before approval.

He made this disclosure following a recent meeting with Chief Directors and senior officials from various Ministries, Departments, and Agencies.

Sharing details on his X platform on April 8, 2025, he stated, “I delivered a firm directive that takes effect from April 3, 2025: No government contract shall be approved without prior commencement authorisation from the Ministry of Finance.”

Dr. Forson explained that the directive is in line with the amended Public Financial Management Act, 2025.

“This is not business as usual. This is a decisive step to enforce fiscal discipline, ensure accountability, and end the culture of financial recklessness in public administration. I made it unequivocally clear: You cannot award contracts without the express approval of the Ministry of Finance.”

He further emphasised, “Every contract must now receive commencement authorisation. Let me repeat: No commencement certificate, no procurement. This is not merely a bureaucratic process—it is a legal requirement.”

The Minister warned that violations of this directive will carry serious consequences.

“The Ministry of Finance will no longer carry the weight of fiscal indiscipline alone. If you are a principal spending officer and you violate this directive, you will be held personally accountable.”

Dr. Forson also called on public officials to uphold integrity and prioritise the welfare of Ghanaians.

“I urge all public officials to act with integrity and a deep sense of national duty. We are among the privileged few—we must not continue to subject our people to hardship through negligence or abuse of public resources.”

“Restoring trust in public service begins with transparency, responsibility, and discipline in implementing the national budget. That journey starts now.”
