CDM urges apology from Felix Kwakye Ofosu after insulting Rev. Fordjour

0

The Centre for Democratic Movement (CDM) has condemned Presidential Spokesperson Felix Kwakye Ofosu for calling Reverend John Ntim Fordjour a “clown” during a national security debate.

In a statement, the CDM described the comment as “appalling” and damaging to the dignity of the Presidency, calling it a violation of ethical standards for public officers.

The red card changed our game completely – Black Queens coach Bjorkegren

0

Black Queens head coach Kim Lars Bjorkegren says a red card to his team in their game against Senegal affected their gameplay.

Ghana, despite being reduced to 10 players, recorded a 1-0 win over Senegal in the first of two friendly games during the April international break.

Anasthesia Achiaa was sent off after picking up a second yellow card early in the second half, which the Swedish trainer believes had an impact on the remainder of the game.

“I felt that towards the end of the first half, we were adapting to their physical style, with more stops and a more Senegal-like way of playing. We actually discussed this at halftime, noting that we needed to play football on the ground and move the ball a little faster,” he said after the game.

“However, we didn’t, and early in the second half, we received a red card. When we did, it completely changed the game. From that point on, it was a completely different game.”

The win over the weekend was Ghana’s first since beating Namibia at the Accra Sports Stadium in December 2023 with a 3-1 scoreline.

“Of course, in professional football, you’re always happy when you win. For us, there was one main aim: to win the game,” he added.

“I would say that in the first 30 minutes, we were able to score a beautiful goal, exactly how we wanted to play, with a perfect cross. And Evelyn scored with a great header from a number 10 position. I think we started the game pretty well.”

The two teams meet again on Tuesday for the second game before the end of the international break.

The two games form the Black Queens’ preparations for the delayed 2024 CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) to be staged in Morocco in July.

National Security uncovers BoG money boxes at Sapeiman crime scene

0

The discovery of official Bank of Ghana (BoG) cash boxes at the centre of a massive counterfeiting operation in Sapeiman has sparked serious concerns about regulatory lapses and the integrity of Ghana’s financial security systems.

During an exclusive tour of the crime scene, Director of Special Operations at the National Security Secretariat, Richard Jakpa, confirmed that the money boxes found were not counterfeit but authentic BoG property. “Authorities have verified that these boxes are genuine,” he revealed, raising alarm over how state-regulated financial tools ended up in the possession of an underground syndicate.

The Sapeiman bust, which took place in February, unearthed a large-scale forgery ring operating behind a seemingly abandoned building disguised as a local battery-charging shop.

The front, manned by an elderly man dubbed the “Battery Doctor,” concealed what investigators now describe as one of the most sophisticated counterfeiting setups discovered in recent years.

Inside, security operatives uncovered ten 40-foot containers filled with counterfeit Ghana cedi and US dollar notes—alongside fake gold bars, many of which had begun peeling to reveal silver-colored metal underneath. Jakpa noted that two additional containers believed to be part of the operation were moved just before security closed in.

National Security has launched a manhunt for the suspected kingpin of the operation, known only as “Alhaji.” Jakpa confirmed that “solid evidence” links Alhaji to both the scene and a broader criminal network.

The revelations have raised questions not only about the scale of the criminal operation but also about potential insider complicity and the gaps in institutional checks that allowed genuine BoG assets to be diverted.

As investigations continue, National Security has vowed to step up financial surveillance and bring every individual involved to justice.

There have been concerns about the state of our mother, the first female Vice-President of the Republic of Ghana. I want to assure you that she is doing very, very well.

Your prayers have worked—prayers from Ghanaians both at home and abroad have truly made a difference. I have personally heard from her, so I speak with certainty—she is doing well.

The Minister also dismissed rumours of a deteriorating health condition as “vicious and un-Ghanaian evil propaganda.”

Please disregard all that vicious and un-Ghanaian evil propaganda that some people are spreading. Our mother is doing very, very well, and she will soon return to her duties—serving Ghana, making us all proud, and especially inspiring our young girls to know that there is nothing women cannot achieve; that women are just as capable as men, and often, can do even better.

Vice-President Professor Opoku-Agyemang is expected to return to the country to resume her official duties following a successful period of medical treatment abroad.

Operatives of the Nigerian Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) have allegedly arrested a 20-year-old Ghanaian-British national, Osei Parker, for attempting to smuggle 19.4kg of a potent strain of cannabis.

The London-based student was reportedly arrested at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) in Lagos during the inward clearance of passengers aboard an Ethiopian Airlines flight from Bangkok, Thailand, on April 3, 2025.

According to reports, during preliminary questioning, the suspect claimed to be a Computer Science student at the University of East London.

Femi Babafemi, Director of Media and Advocacy for the NDLEA, said in a statement on Sunday that operatives of the agency uncovered 36 parcels of the illicit substance hidden inside a large travel bag.

“NDLEA officers of the MMIA Strategic Command on Thursday, April 3, intercepted a 20-year-old Ghanaian-British man, Parker Darren Hazekia Osei, with 36 parcels of loud, a strong strain of cannabis, weighing 19.40kg, packed in a giant travelling bag.

“The suspect, who claims to be a student of Computer Science at the University of East London, UK, was arrested during the inward clearance of passengers on an Ethiopian Airlines flight from Bangkok, Thailand, at the E-Arrival Hall of the Lagos airport.

“In his statement, the suspect said he lives with his parents in the UK but left London about a week ago for Bangkok, where he picked up the consignment to deliver in Nigeria,” saharareporters.com quoted him as saying.

In a related development, NDLEA officers in Abia State on Saturday, April 5, arrested a 75-year-old grandfather, Nna Nnanna Felix, with 1.6kg of skunk, a strain of cannabis, during a raid at Umunteke Asa, Ukwa West LGA. Another suspect, David Chinemerem, 21, was also arrested with 2,050 ampoules of pentazocine on Tuesday, April 1, at No. 7 Nnajiego Lane, Umuode Road, Aba.

The Angels: Former Ghanaian Gospel Group Members Transform After Relocating Abroad

News Hub Creator2d

The Angels, a popular Ghanaian gospel music group, have resurfaced after years of being out of the public eye. Original members Portia Osei and Linda Asante have undergone remarkable transformations since relocating abroad, garnering attention on social media for their grown-up appearances.

In a series of recent videos, fans were amazed to see the former child musicians, now grown women, as they shared snippets of their lives abroad. Linda Asante, known as Angels Linda, posted a joyful video on TikTok, singing along to Kumawood actor Lil Win’s gospel hit Me Nwom while traveling on a bus. Meanwhile, Portia Osei shared a reflective video from her home, discussing a dream she had about life and judgment day.

The Angels first gained fame in the 2000s as young gospel stars. They were students at Dr. Kwaku Oteng’s Angel Educational Complex in Kumasi, where they formed the group. Raised in a Christian household in the same neighborhood, Akumadan, Linda and Portia caught the public’s attention with their hit single Kae Me and their 2005 album. The group later expanded with a third member, Bishop, who was reportedly their brother.

However, after a few years, the group disbanded as each member moved abroad for education and career opportunities.

The resurgence of the Angels’ members has reignited interest in their early music, as fans reminisce about their rise to fame and subsequent hiatus.

President Pavel Begins Historic Visit To Mauritania and Ghana – Brno Daily

0

Czech President Petr Pavel arrived in Mauritania yesterday, beginning a four-day visit to Africa during which he will also travel to Ghana. The visit is the first by a Czech or Czechoslovak head of state to Mauritania, and the first to Ghana in more than 60 years. He is being accompanied to both countries by a business delegation.

The government plane carrying Pavel arrived at the airport north of Nouakchott at around 4:15 pm local time (6:15 pm CEST), and shortly afterwards Pavel was personally welcomed by Mauritanian President Mohamed Ould Ghazouani. On the tarmac, the heads of state listened to the national anthems of both countries and watched a parade of honour by the Mauritanian Green Guard.

Yesterday evening, Pavel had an informal meeting with Czech army special forces, 17 of whom are training Mauritanian soldiers as part of a NATO initiative. Security is one of the main topics of Pavel’s visit to Mauritania, which is considered the West’s strongest regional ally after a series of military coups in the Sahel in recent years.

Credit: hrad.cz

Mauritania is also facing a significant influx of refugees, partly due to the unstable situation in the region, particularly in neighbouring Mali. In a country of five million, there are currently around 280,000 refugees, according to the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). The Czech Republic has contributed 1 million euros (CZK 25 million) to stabilise the migration situation in Mauritania, a transit country for African refugees heading to Europe, mainly for projects in one of the refugee camps in the east of the country.

In the country rich in mineral resources, especially iron ore and gold, Pavel will also discuss the development of trade cooperation. Mutual trade with Mauritania, whose gross domestic product per capita in 2023 was USD 2,120 according to the World Bank, almost 15 times lower than in the Czech Republic, reached only USD 2 million (CZK 46 million) last year, so Czech officials say they see great potential here.

“Given the level at which we are starting, I think there is room for improvement and that it is quite extensive,” Radek Spicar, vice-president of the Czech Confederation of Industry and a part of the trade delegation, told CTK yesterday.

“We have companies active in the defence industry that rank among the top ones worldwide and that certainly have something to offer Mauritania, as well as companies active in the mining and quarrying industry,” Spicar noted. Other areas for potential cooperation include environmental protection technologies, waste management and water purification.

Today, Pavel will hold official talks with Ghazouani and will also attend the opening of a business forum and a discussion with UNHCR representatives.

On Tuesday, Pavel will move to Ghana, where he is to meet with President John Dramani Mahama, hold a joint press conference and then attend an official dinner.

On Wednesday, Pavel will attend the opening of a business forum in Ghana, the inauguration of the Czech House and a hospital built by a Czech company.

On Thursday morning, the Czech government plane with Pavel will head back to Prague, and should arrive in the evening.

ghana news Govt spokesperson dismisses drug claims over KIA aircraft landings

0

The Minister of Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, has dismissed fresh allegations of drug trafficking linked to recent aircraft landings at the Kotoka International Airport (KIA), insisting that the incidents were technical and logistical in nature.

His comments come in response to the renewed claims by the Ranking Member on Parliament’s Defence and Interior Committee, Rev. John Ntim Fordjour, who maintained that the aircraft in question were involved in transporting narcotics and cash.

In a series of Facebook posts on Sunday, April 6, 2025, Mr Kwakye Ofosu, who is also the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Member of Parliament (MP) for Abura-Asebu-Kwamankese in the Central Region, offered detailed explanations and visual evidence to counter the claims.

Recall

Rev. Fordjour, who is also the New Patriotic Party MP for Assin South also in the Central Region, at a news conference held at the Parliament House last Tuesday, alleged that two flights, namely AirMed flight N823AM and Cavok Air private jet, Antonov An-12B, landed on the tarmac of KIA last month, from Gran Canaria; an island of Spain, and departed to the same Gran Canaria days after their arrival.

He called on the National Security to, as a matter of urgency, make public the content of cargo suspected to be cocaine and cash, transported into the country by the two suspicious flights.

President’s directive

President John Mahama has also directed a full-scale investigation into the allegations of suspected drug trafficking and money laundering at the KIA since the Minority news conference.

In a statement shared on his social media page, President Mahama assured the public that his government took such allegations seriously.

He, therefore, instructed key investigative agencies—including the Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC), the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service, the National Investigations Bureau (NIB), and the National Security Coordinator—to collaborate fully with the MP in probing the matter.

Explanation

Mr Kwakye Ofosu, giving details on the Air Med aircraft that recently landed at KIA, said the aircraft in question had suffered damage to its landing gear tyres, necessitating repairs that extended its stay at the airport.

He showed pictures of engineers fixing damaged tyres on the landing gear of the Air Med Aircraft at the KIA.

He explained that the damaged parts and engineers were brought in by a different aircraft that was the reason for the aricraft stayed for five days.

He also addressed suspicions surrounding a Cavok cargo flight, providing video footage showing a security inspection upon arrival at KIA.

“This is actual footage of the inspection of the Cavok flight by security officials at the Kotoka International Airport on arrival, which shows it carried a cargo of oil drills and oil in jerrycans,” he stated, adding: “Don’t let anyone lie to you and shift the goal post when pressed for evidence.”

Mr Kwakye Ofosu urged the public to disregard what he described as deliberate misinformation and stressed the government’s commitment to transparency in matters involving national security and airport operations.

The clarification is the latest in a series of rebuttals from government officials following opposition calls for investigations into suspicious aircraft activity at the country’s main airport.

This Season’s must-have – Avocados

0

Avocados, often referred to as “pears” in Ghana, are a beloved component of Ghanaian cuisine and are now back in season. Most fruit and produce vendors have them stocked.

Prices vary greatly from vendor to vendor, and generally, many people still find them expensive. This notwithstanding, there is much to gain from spending a bit more on getting some avocados into your meal repertoire this season.

This article discusses avocados’ various health benefits such as improved cardiovascular health and their use in ketogenic and weight loss diets.

The rich nutrient profile of avocados

Avocados have been referred to in some circles as “nature’s multivitamin”. This is due to their rich and diverse nutrient profile, encompassing essential vitamins, minerals, healthy fats, and beneficial plant compounds.

Regular consumption of avocados has been linked to improved overall diet quality and nutrient intake. Studies suggest that including avocados in the diet can lead to better cardiovascular health markers and may reduce the risk of metabolic syndrome.

Here’s an overview of their nutritional benefits, supported by scientific research.

  1. Avocados are abundant in several vital nutrients
    1. Vitamins: They provide significant amounts of vitamins K, E, C, and several B vitamins, including B5 (pantothenic acid), B6, and folate. These vitamins play crucial roles in energy metabolism, immune function, and skin health.
    1. Minerals: Avocados are a good source of potassium, containing more per 100 grams than bananas. Potassium is essential for regulating blood pressure and maintaining proper muscle and nerve function.
  2. High in Healthy Monounsaturated Fats

Approximately 67% of the fats in avocados are monounsaturated, primarily oleic acid. These healthy fats are associated with cardiovascular benefits, including lowering total and LDL cholesterol levels.

A 100-gram serving of avocado provides about 7 grams of dietary fibre, which supports digestive health, promotes a feeling of fullness, and aids in blood sugar regulation.

  • Presence of Beneficial Phytochemicals

Avocados contain phytosterols and carotenoids, such as lutein and zeaxanthin, which are important for eye health and may reduce the risk of age-related macular degeneration.

Avocado as a key ingredient in keto diets

Avocados are rich in monounsaturated fats, making them a good choice for those following a ketogenic diet. These healthy fats are essential for maintaining ketosis, the metabolic state where the body utilizes fat for energy instead of carbohydrates. Beyond their fat content, avocados offer a wealth of nutrients beneficial to overall health as earlier described. Thus, incorporating avocados into a ketogenic diet not only supports the necessary fat intake but also provides essential nutrients that contribute to cardiovascular health and overall well-being.

Avocados and weight management

Avocados are rich in monounsaturated fats and dietary fibre, both of which promote a feeling of fullness. This satiety can lead to reduced overall calorie intake, a key factor in weight loss.  However, while avocados are nutrient-dense, they are also relatively high in calories. Therefore, moderation is key when including avocados in a weight loss diet plan to ensure that total calorie intake aligns with weight management goals. As with any dietary change, individual responses can vary, so it is advisable to monitor how your body responds and consult with a registered dietitian or healthcare professional for personalized guidance.

In summary

Incorporating avocados into your diet can provide a wide array of nutrients that contribute to overall health and well-being, justifying their reputation as “nature’s multivitamin. Whether you are following a ketogenic diet or simply looking to boost your nutrient intake, avocados offer a versatile and delicious way to enhance your overall well-being. So, the next time you are at the market, consider investing in this nutritional powerhouse and enjoy the myriad benefits it brings to your health.

MyNewsGh.com has obtained shocking details of how some soldiers numbering Seven (7) went on a rampage, arrested and tortured suspected mobile phone thieves at Asafo BB in Kumasi, leading to the death of two while the other is still battling for his life.

According to sources to this portal, the incident occurred on Thursday, March 27, 2025, when a female civilian (name withheld) had her phone stolen by three guys from her car at Adum in Kumasi.

A lead was given as to where she could find the phone at Asafo BB, about 300 meters from Adum, where it was stolen. Before she arrived, the suspected thieves had sold the phone to another person for Ghc3,000, and the buyer was unwilling to part with the stolen phone until the full amount was paid.

Because she did not have enough money on her, she offered to top up with Ghc500 and, managed to retrieve her phone on Friday morning, March 28, and left happily for Accra.

Later that afternoon, around 1 pm, a military patrol vehicle (Toyota Hilux) showed up with seven (7) heavily armed soldiers led by a Lieutenant of Achiase Jungle Warfare. They requested for the Three 3) thieves to be handed over to them at Asafo BB.

The suspects were handed over to them, and after some physical abuse, they took them away to the 4BN Barracks at Sofoline in Kumasi to torture them with Heavy wood, fan belts, pepper spray, and powdered pepper, among other life-threatening objects.

After they brutalized the three suspected thieves and realized they were almost dead, they dumped them at a bush near the Rotary Park opposite the Lancaster Hotel and drove off.

One of them, who had little strength, managed to move to the road nearby, where he found a driver who knew him to give him money to buy some water to wash his face and struggle to find his way to Asafo to announce that his two other friends had passed out.

The men at BB rushed to Rotary Park for the bodies and took them to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH), where they were pronounced dead. The survivor was also rushed to the emergency centre at KATH.

The suspected thieves have been identified as Christian Obiri Yeboah (a.k.a Kofi Yesu), 20 years, and a loading boy at Asafo Labor, Adu Kwame, a.k.a Ogyee, 32 years, and Kwabena Sarfo, about 27 years.

Meanwhile, the Military High Command has, in a statement, stated that “we assure all that anyone found culpable would be dealt with according to the law. We also urge the families and friends of the victims to remain calm and await the outcome of the investigations.”

Nations FC captain Razak Simpson is quickly emerging as one of the most sought-after defenders in African football, with Algerian champions CR Belouizdad now expressing strong interest in securing his services.

The 26-year-old centre-back has been a standout performer in the ongoing Ghana Premier League season, notching four goals in 18 appearances – a rare feat for a defender.

His commanding presence at the back, coupled with his leadership qualities, has not only bolstered Nations’ campaign but also earned him a well-deserved call-up to the Black Stars.

Simpson made his international debut in a crucial AFCON qualifier against Angola and has since added two more caps to his name, showcasing composure and tactical intelligence on the international stage.

Belouizdad’s pursuit signals Simpson’s rising stature on the continent. A move to the North African giants – who boast a rich history and regular participation in CAF competitions – would offer him a greater platform to showcase his talent and develop further.

While Nations are reluctant to lose their captain, they acknowledge the potential career growth such a transfer could offer.

Talks are expected to intensify in the coming weeks, with fans eagerly awaiting to see if one of Ghana’s finest defensive talents will soon take his next big step.

The Mystery Behind Agya Kwabena’s Alleged Removal as Morning Show Host on UTV Unveiled

News Hub Creator13h

There has been considerable speculation regarding the absence of Agya Kwabena, a well-known figure on UTV’s morning program. A Facebook post by NPP member PK Sarpong suggests that the situation is more complex than it appears.

According to Sarpong, Agya Kwabena has been pushed to the sidelines and now hosts a Saturday morning show, a time slot that is less advantageous as it competes with other popular television programs favored by many Ghanaians.

The post indicates that following the National Democratic Congress (NDC) assuming power, Agya Kwabena allegedly sought a government position. He reportedly reached out to officials within the Mahama administration, advocating for a role by highlighting his support for the NDC during his broadcasts.

He is said to have communicated that he frequently expressed favorable views about the NDC while criticizing the NPP on air. However, while those he approached were deliberating on his request, his supervisor, Fadda Dickson, became aware of his actions and expressed discontent.

This situation reportedly led UTV management to acknowledge the validity of complaints regarding Agya Kwabena’s perceived bias and behavior akin to that of an NDC spokesperson. Consequently, they opted to remove him from his prominent weekday morning show and reassign him to a less favored Saturday morning slot.

PK Sarpong’s post appears to validate the notion that Agya Kwabena’s decline in prominence was linked to political partiality and unprofessional behavior.

Weren’t you the one who fought pastors and now blaming Bawumia? – Ama Daaku descends on Kennedy Agyapong

Former NPP flagbearer aspirant Kennedy Agyapong play videoFormer NPP flagbearer aspirant Kennedy Agyapong

A member of the communications team of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Ellen Ama Daaku, has called on the leadership of the party to caution former flagbearer aspirant Kennedy Agyapong against making divisive statements about Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, the party’s 2024 flagbearer.

According to Ellen, Kennedy Agyapong has reportedly blamed the NPP’s loss in the 2024 elections on Dr. Bawumia’s religious background, a move she believes is unfair and counterproductive.

She cautioned that if such blame games continue, supporters of Dr. Bawumia may also be forced to speak out against Kennedy Agyapong.

In an interview on Movement TV on April 4, 2025, Ellen stressed the importance of party unity as the NPP prepares for the next election cycle.

“At this point in time, we haven’t even started the race yet. But what Kennedy Agyapong has started, I see it as a joke. He is blaming Dr. Bawumia for something that is not his fault. It is not Bawumia’s fault that he is a Muslim,” she said.

“For Kennedy, is he a Christian? Is he not the same person who fought pastors in this country? He is also a factor that contributed to the loss of the elections. So, the party should call him to order, or else some of us will also rise and begin to speak out against him,” she added.

Ellen emphasised that the NPP must focus on healing and rebuilding rather than engaging in internal blame games if the party hopes to return to power.

Mahama allegedly blocks appointments of Ashanti high-ranking military officers to the UN – Ntim Fordjour

Some military officers at UN peace keeping missions Some military officers at UN peace keeping missions

Ranking Member of the Defence and Interior Committee of Parliament, Reverend John Ntim Fordjour, has alleged that President John Dramani Mahama has reversed the appointments of high-ranking Ashanti military officers, from lieutenant colonels to colonels, to United Nations mission operations.

According to the Assin South MP, these appointments, which had been arranged several months ago, have been blocked by the president, who serves as the Commander-in-Chief of the Ghana Armed Forces.

In an interview on Voice of London Radio with Mensa Musa on April 4, 2025, Ntim Fordjour asserted that the National Democratic Congress (NDC)-led administration has started on the wrong foot.

He claimed that the government is engaging in tribalistic governance.

“They are using politics to dismiss people left, right, and centre; as I speak to you, call anyone in the Ghana Armed Forces and ask them how is it that Ashanti high-ranking military officers, from lieutenant colonels to colonels, who had been promoted and appointed to UN missions, suddenly had their appointments reversed.

“These arrangements were made three to four months ago, and now this government has rescinded all such appointments for Ashantis while leaving appointments for officers from other tribes intact,” he said.

Ntim Fordjour questioned the rationale behind what he described as political, tribal, and ethnocentric governance.

He further criticized the state of affairs, highlighting widespread issues such as the alleged prevalence of cocaine trafficking and money laundering.

“What kind of political, tribal, and ethnocentric governance is this?” he asked.

“Cocaine is everywhere; money laundering is everywhere. I am telling you, they have started on a very terrible note. I have all the proof of this. I even mentioned it on Ekosiison and asked them to verify. The kind of text messages they received shocked them.”

It may be recalled that Reverend Ntim Fordjour previously criticized President Mahama after the appointment of a Brigadier General as Chief of Defence Staff of the Ghana Armed Forces, which eventually led to the resignation of generals whose ranks were higher than the now Major General William Agyapong, who is the CDS.

GMA engages fishery stakeholders on maritime security, sea safety

0

The meeting was held to strengthen collaboration The meeting was held to strengthen collaboration

Dr Kamal-Deen Ali, Director-General of the Ghana Maritime Authority (GMA), has engaged stakeholders in the fishery sector in enhancing maritime safety, implementing sustainable fishing practices, and combating illegal activities at sea.

The meeting was held to strengthen collaboration between the GMA and the National Fisheries Association of Ghana (NAFAG).

It also addressed concerns affecting Ghana’s maritime sector, particularly the incursion of oil and gas protection zones, piracy, maritime security of vessels at sea, and seafarers’ conditions.

It became known during the engagement that the number of canoe incursions at the oil and gas zones rose to 78 in 2024 compared to 27 recorded in 2023.

Dr Ali expressed concern over the rising number of canoes trespassing into restricted oil and gas protection zones at sea, describing the development as a serious threat to national safety and maritime security.

He noted that despite ongoing efforts to regulate Ghana’s maritime domain, the unlawful presence of canoes within the zones continues to pose significant risks to the fishing community and the country’s offshore oil operations.

He said that although the GMA acknowledges some challenges of artisanal fishers, the safety of Ghana’s maritime space must not be compromised, adding that unauthorised presence does endanger lives and threatens the integrity of key national assets.

“One incursion is important, ten is important, 20 is scary, and 50 or 70 is at an unacceptable level in terms of the industry standards. In fact, if these were happening in any developed country, they would have declared it a national crisis,” he stated.

Touching on piracy, he underscored the grave threat it poses to maritime safety and national security, emphasising that the increasing incidents of piracy not only endanger the lives of seafarers but also disrupt essential maritime trade routes and negatively impact the national economy.

According to him, the menace of piracy imposes substantial financial burdens on shipping companies, saying that the appropriate stakeholders would be engaged to strengthen the maritime surveillance systems and heightened vigilance across the country’s territorial waters.

He mentioned that there would soon be a formal engagement to address and improve seafarers’ service conditions, acknowledging the essential role maritime workers play in sustaining the shipping industry.

Nana Jojo Solomon, President of NAFAG, thanked the Director-General for initiating the dialogue and acknowledged that incidents of canoe incursions were indeed a growing concern, giving the assurance of their readiness to cooperate fully with the GMA in addressing these issues.

Solomon noted that many of the canoe operators were not fully aware of the locations of these oil and gas zones or the risks involved in entering them and thus appealed for educational outreach programmes to ensure that NAFAG members were better informed.

He added that NAFAG was committed to promoting safe fishing practices and would work with all stakeholders to reduce activities that posed a threat to the maritime space.

We Will Not Vote For Lies Again, Dr. Bawumia – Ashanti Region Youths Express Frustration At Rally

0

A group of aggrieved youths in Ghana’s Ashanti Region have boldly declared their dissatisfaction with Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, vowing not to vote for what they termed as “lies and unfulfilled promises” in the upcoming general elections. The protest took place during a political rally organized by the New Patriotic Party (NPP), where the youths made their voices heard through placards, chants, and emotional speeches.

According to eyewitness reports, the rally, which was meant to bolster support for Dr. Bawumia’s presidential ambitions, quickly turned tense as dozens of youths gathered to express their frustrations over the state of the economy, rising unemployment, and what they perceive as failed promises from the ruling government. The demonstrators accused the Vice President and the NPP of neglecting the plight of the average Ghanaian, especially the youth, who are battling joblessness and economic hardship.

“We were full of hope when Dr. Bawumia promised us economic transformation and digitization. Years later, our situation has worsened. Prices are high, jobs are scarce, and we feel deceived,” said Kwabena Asare, one of the protest leaders. “This time, we will not vote for lies. We need real change.”

Many of the protesters pointed to what they called inconsistencies between the government’s campaign promises and their actual performance in office. They claimed that the Vice President’s economic policies had failed to alleviate poverty and had instead deepened the financial struggles of ordinary citizens.

The Ashanti Region, traditionally a stronghold of the NPP, appears to be experiencing growing discontent among its youth, a development that could have significant implications for the party’s electoral chances in 2024. Political analysts say this unrest signals a need for urgent engagement between political leaders and the youth to restore trust and address their genuine concerns.

The NPP leadership, however, has downplayed the protest, describing it as the actions of a small, misinformed group influenced by opposition elements. Nonetheless, the message from the rally was clear—many young people are tired of empty promises and are demanding accountability and tangible improvements in their lives.

With the elections drawing nearer, political parties may need to rethink their strategies and put youth-centered development at the forefront if they hope to win the support of this increasingly vocal demographic.

Powerful Prophecy Reveals Who Was Killed To Put Mahama In The Number 8 Position

News Hub Creator12h

Akua Donkor, the founder of the Ghana Freedom Party, has stirred national debate with her claim that a divine prophecy is behind the recent alteration of former President John Mahama’s position on the electoral ballot. According to Donkor, she had foreseen that Mahama would lose the number 8 slot, a shift she suggests was driven by supernatural forces rather than a mere administrative decision.

In Ghana, some people believe that ballot numbers hold spiritual significance. The number 8, in particular, is associated with concepts like power, eternity, and balance, and is thought by some to influence voters on a subconscious level. Donkor argued that the change in Mahama’s ballot placement was not accidental but part of a spiritual strategy to neutralize any metaphysical advantage that the number 8 might have offered the former president.

Her comments have provoked mixed reactions. While some view Donkor’s remarks as a genuine spiritual revelation, others dismiss them as superstition with no place in the political discourse. Regardless of differing opinions, her statement underscores the prominent role spiritual beliefs play in Ghana’s political landscape, particularly as the country approaches a crucial election.

The controversy has sparked conversations across the nation about the intersection of spirituality and politics, as many question how such beliefs might influence the electoral process. While some see it as a harmless cultural perspective, others worry it could shape the political strategies leading into the upcoming vote. As the debate continues, Donkor’s statement highlights the complex relationship between faith, superstition, and political maneuvering in Ghana.

Chinese Ambassador backs sustainable mining, community development in Ghana

Chinese Ambassador to Ghana, Tong Defa Chinese Ambassador to Ghana, Tong Defa

The Chinese Ambassador to Ghana, Tong Defa, has lauded the establishment of the Association of China (Ghana) Mining LBG (ACGM) as a key step towards deepening sustainable and inclusive development in Ghana’s mining sector.

Describing the Association as a “bridge for a win-win cooperation,” Tong said the initiative aligned with Ghana’s ambition to modernise its mining industry, while protecting its rich natural heritage.

Ambassador Tong stated: “Ghana’s lush forests and clear waters are as valuable as gold and silver,” urging members of the Association to prioritise ecological preservation alongside economic development.

He was speaking at a colourful ceremony, in Accra, at which the Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, inaugurated the ACGM under the theme: “Responsibility, Sustainability, Excellence, and Growth.”

It comprises major Chinese mining firms and mining sector services companies.

The event also marked the announcement of the China-Ghana Mining Community Development Foundation, aimed at mobilising dedicated funds to support sustainability and community empowerment, and development initiatives.

Tang ZhenJiang serves as Chairman, with Kevin Chen, Secretary General (Golden Star Wassa, subsidiary of Chifeng Gold); and three Deputy Chairmen: Kevin Wu of JH Resources Exploration Limited, Libin Xu of Ghana Manganese Company Limited, and Qingming Tang of Earl International Mining Ltd.

Ambassador Tong identified five key focus areas for the ACGM, which are promoting standardised development, information sharing, technical cooperation, community development, and environmental protection.

Ambassador Tong pledged the continued support of the Chinese Embassy, expressing optimism that the Association would “inject new momentum into Ghana’s economic growth and the high-quality development of Chinese enterprises.”

Buah, who spoke on behalf of President John Dramani Mahama, described the inauguration as “a significant milestone that ushers in a new chapter in Ghana-China collaboration in the mining sector.

“One that promises mutual growth, technological advancement, and sustainable development,” he explained.

He underlined the Government’s zero tolerance for illegal mining drives, describing Galamsey as “an act of environmental terrorism and economic sabotage”.

Buah tasked the ACGM to serve as “a beacon of integrity,” upholding Ghanaian mining laws while supporting community upliftment.

“China has long been a partner in Ghana’s mining sector. The establishment of the ACGM reflects the commitment of Chinese investors to responsible and long-term engagement in this very critical industry,” he said.

The Minister highlighted the potential of Chinese technical expertise in areas such as underground mining, low-grade ore development, and mining-related nuclear training to improve efficiency and global competitiveness in Ghana’s mining industry.

Tang, for his part, reaffirmed the Association’s core mission to promote responsible mining, technological innovation, and community-driven development.

He expressed readiness to work closely with Ghana’s Ministries of Lands and Natural Resources and Youth Development to empower young people through a cooperative system.

“Through this Association, we will unify industry consensus, fulfil social responsibilities, and empower communities,” Tang said.

“Together, we will write a remarkable new chapter in China-Ghana collaboration.”

The event, rich in cultural display, featured traditional performances by the Atitirew Cultural Troupe and brought together dignitaries and key players in Ghana’s mining sector.

They included Ministers of State, Parliamentarians, and a renowned entrepreneur, Ibrahim Mahama, founder of Engineers and Planners, a mining service provider.

Sammy Gyamfi Demands Arrest of Rev. Ntim Fordjour Over Aircraft Allegations

By: News_Arena

Date: 6 April 2025 | 11:07 PM

A tense exchange took place on JoyNews’ Newsfile as the controversy deepened over claims made by Assin South MP, Rev. John Ntim Fordjour. The lawmaker alleged that two aircraft linked to possible drug trafficking and money laundering operations had entered Ghanaian airspace.

Sammy Gyamfi, National Communications Officer for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), called for Rev. Fordjour’s immediate arrest, insisting he must either validate his claims or face legal repercussions.

“In any serious jurisdiction, such baseless accusations against a sitting government would carry consequences,” Gyamfi stated. He argued that if the MP refuses a summons from National Security, he must be apprehended and made to produce credible proof.

“If he ignores the National Security invitation, thinking his parliamentary immunity will protect him, he’s mistaken. He must be arrested and compelled to justify his statements,” Gyamfi asserted.

However, Rev. Fordjour, who is also the Ranking Member on Parliament’s Defence Committee, pushed back strongly.

“Sammy, go ahead and call them to arrest me—right now, on this show,” the MP replied defiantly.

This heated debate follows the Minority’s request for more transparency from National Security regarding a private jet and an air ambulance that reportedly stayed in Ghana for several days before heading to Gran Canaria in Spain.

Rev. Fordjour alleged, based on intelligence reports, that these aircraft may have been transporting illegal drugs and large amounts of foreign currency, possibly U.S. dollars.

In response, government officials, including the Minister of State for Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, dismissed the MP’s claims as unfounded, accusing him of spreading misinformation without credible sources.

State of emergency declaration must be backed by security advice

0

The Minister for Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation, Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed has disclosed that President John Dramani Mahama is holding consultations with his security advisors to critically access the illegal mining menace across the country.

His comments come amid growing calls for the government to declare a state of emergency and suspend all mining activities across Ghana.

In a media interview on Saturday, April 5, the minister emphasised that the President’s decision whether or not to declare a state of emergency will be based on the advise and recommendations from his security advisors.

“What President John Dramani Mahama would do is that you don’t just declare a state of emergency. State of emergency declaration should be done as a result of security briefing and advice you get. President John Dramani Mahama has actually engaged those clothed with the capacity security-wise, to advise him on these issues.

“President Mahama is engaging them and they are assessing the situation. If the conclusion of the security advice the president gets is that there should be a state of emergency, President Mahama will do that without blinking.”

Ntim Fordjour’s lies could destroy Ghana’s hard-won international reputation – Sinare

0

Former Ghana Ambassador to Egypt and Saudi Arabia, Said Sinare Former Ghana Ambassador to Egypt and Saudi Arabia, Said Sinare

A former Ghana Ambassador to Egypt and Saudi Arabia, Said Sinare, has responded fiercely to accusations made by Rev John Ntim Fordjour, the Member of Parliament for Assin South, when he recently warned that Ghana was on the verge of becoming a hub for cocaine trafficking and money laundering under the leadership of President John Dramani Mahama.

Said Sinare, who is also a former National Vice Chairman of the National Democratic Congress, known for his sharp wit and unwavering patriotism, did not mince words in his rebuttal.

He labeled Ntim Fordjour as a liar, accusing him of fabricating baseless fears for personal and political gain.

The former ambassador further referred to the MP as “attention-starved,” asserting that such inflammatory rhetoric only damages national unity and serves no purpose other than to stir unnecessary panic in and beyond the country.

“His toxic narrative threatens the unity of our country,” Sinare emphasised, voicing his concern that the reckless spread of lies by individuals like Fordjour could weaken the social fabric of the nation.

Sinare also called for swift decisive action against those who engage in such harmful behavior, warning that it was critical to protect the integrity of public discourse to ensure that debates remain grounded in truth and not fear-mongering.

While Sinare did not dismiss the importance of being vigilant against criminal activities such as drug trafficking, he was quick to caution against baseless accusations.

“Serious allegations must be backed by evidence and thorough investigations, not speculative claims,” Sinare stated, reinforcing that Ghana’s reputation should not be tarnished by unfounded rumors.

Sinare, the light-skinned Rawlings look-alike proudly highlighted his government’s ongoing efforts to combat drug trafficking, particularly through the commendable work of the Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC), which has successfully intercepted significant drug shipments at Kotoka International Airport.

He emphasised that these efforts were a testament to the government’s commitment to protecting the nation from drug-related crimes, while safeguarding Ghana’s global standing.

In closing, the NDC’s Zongo president, Said Sinare called for unity and responsibility among Ghana’s leaders.

He urged them to focus on addressing the real issues that affect the lives of Ghanaians and to refrain from indulging in divisive and harmful political rhetoric just to score cheap political points.

“We need leaders who uplift our country, not those who exploit fear and misinformation for personal gain,” he declared, urging a shift toward more responsible, truth-driven political discourse.

Ghana Gas assures Ngalekyi of discharging its mandate to Nzema people

0

Chief Executive Officer of Ghana Gas, Judith Adjobah Blay Chief Executive Officer of Ghana Gas, Judith Adjobah Blay

The Ghana National Gas Company (GNGC) has assured traditional rulers and indigenes of Nzema, especially those within the company’s catchment area, to meet the demands and expectations of people within the oil and gas enclave.

The company said it had taken note of concerns raised by Nana Morkeh Kpanyinli IV, Chief of Ngalekyi, regarding the operations and activities of the company as well as its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR).

According to the Company, contrary to the Chief’s claims that landowners had not received compensation, Ghana Gas confirmed that all landowners with appropriate documentation whose lands were affected by its activities have received compensation.

“However, there are ongoing litigation cases that need to be resolved before compensation can be disbursed to all affected parties.

This was contained in a press release issued and signed by Richard Ernest Kirk-Mensah, Head of Corporate Communications at Ghana National Gas Company and copied to the Ghana News Agency in Aiyinasi in the Ellembelle District.

Responding to flaring activities and environmental impact, the company categorically denied the assertion that “our flaring activities reduce the lifespan of community members.”

“This claim is unsubstantiated and not supported by scientific evidence.”

It said as an International Standardized Operation certified Company,” we adhere to high-quality international standards and prioritize environmental protection and the health and safety of our staff and community members.

The Environmental Protection Agency’s report on Ghana Gas is a testament to our commitment to responsible operations.”

The release explained that Ghana Gas was not responsible for gas pricing as it falls under the purview of the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC).

“However, we are willing to advocate for a reduction in prices, if possible.”

Regarding employment opportunities, the company acknowledged the Chief’s concern and pledged its commitment to addressing the issue.

“Under the leadership of our new Chief Executive Officer, Judith Adjobah Blay, we are developing a strategy that aligns with the President’s agenda to alleviate unemployment.

This plan will be communicated to all communities within our catchment area, and we believe it will benefit many indigenes.”

On the operational impact on fishing activities, the release said its pipelines are laid under the seabed and do not impede fishing activities.

It added that “while it is an international practice for fishermen to avoid marked perimeters, we assure the community that our offshore activities occupy less than 1% of the space, leaving ample room for fishing”.

Ghana Gas indicated that this “response addresses the concerns raised by Nana Morkeh Kpanyinli IV and demonstrates our commitment to responsible operations, community engagement and transparency.”

Minister for Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa has firmly dismissed rumours concerning the health of Vice President Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, calling the reports “vicious” and “unGhanaian.”

Speaking to a gathering of Ghanaians in Lagos, Nigeria, the minister reassured the public that the Vice President is in good health and urged the public to disregard the speculation making rounds on social media and other platforms.

“I want to assure you that she is doing very, very well. Your prayers have really helped. I have heard from her, so I know what I’m talking about.

“Please ignore all that very vicious and unGhanaian, evil propaganda,” Ablakwa stated.

His comments come in response to growing online chatter suggesting that the Vice President has died after a short illness.

Previously, Ablakwa was compelled to speak about the issue for the first time when he made it clear that there was no cause for concern and that the Vice President would soon resume her duties.

The Vice President was said to have fallen ill after work on Friday, March 28, 2025, and was receiving treatment at the University of Ghana Medical Centre (UGMC).

A statement from the Minister of Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, on Sunday, March 30, 2025, indicated that medical experts had advised her to seek further medical attention abroad.

Ernest Nuamah faces lengthy layoff after devastating cruciate ligament injury

0

Ghana international Ernest Nuamah Ghana international Ernest Nuamah

Ghana international Ernest Nuamah is set to spend a significant amount of time on the sidelines after suffering a devastating cruciate ligament rupture during Olympique Lyon’s Ligue 1 clash against Lille on Saturday.

The injury, which occurred in just the fifth minute of the game, followed a ground duel with Lille defender Gabriel Gudmundsson.

Unfortunately, Nuamah came off worse in the challenge and had to be substituted early, with Ryan Cherki taking his place.

Lyon eventually triumphed 2-1, but the victory was overshadowed by the worrying setback to their talented winger.

Initial assessments suggest Nuamah could be out for six to twelve months, depending on the severity of the tear and how his body responds to treatment and rehabilitation.

A partial tear may heal with conservative therapy within 6 to 9 months, while a complete rupture requiring surgery and extensive rehab could stretch the recovery to at least a year.

In some cases, full recovery can take up to two years, particularly if complications arise.

The injury is a huge blow not only to Lyon’s campaign but also to Ghana’s national team, which values Nuamah’s pace, creativity, and work ethic.

As he begins his long road to recovery, the football community in Ghana and beyond will be rallying behind the 21-year-old star, hoping for a full and successful comeback.

Work on Ofankor-Nsawam road project resumes today

0

The resident engineer for the Ofankor-Nsawam road project, Ing. Kwabena Bempong, has announced that construction work will resume today [Monday, April 7] after a four-month suspension due to financial constraints.

The halt in work had raised safety concerns among pedestrians and motorists, following reports of recurring accidents attributed to the absence of a footbridge and essential road markings.

Speaking to Citi News, Ing. Bempong acknowledged the public’s concerns and stated that although the project was initially scheduled for completion in July this year, it will now require an additional nine months to complete.

“Now that funds have started flowing, we expect that there will be continuous work and if there is continuous work, even if we give him probably another eight, nine months after the July deadline, he should be able to complete the work. Because as I have always maintained, the heavy lifting has been done. The bridges, apart from the Nsawam bridge, most of them are over 90 percent complete. And so from Monday, we should see the contractor back on site.”

Nigeria’s central bank has sold nearly $200 million to support the naira currency after President Donald Trump’s tariffs sent shockwaves through global markets, the bank said on Sunday.

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) said a decline in crude oil prices in response to the tariffs, had presented “new dynamics for oil-exporting countries such as Nigeria.”

Nigeria, Africa’s largest oil producer, relies on crude exports for 90% of its foreign exchange.

The CBN reacted by intervening in the foreign exchange market, selling US$197.71 million to banks.

“This measured step aligns with the Bank’s broader objective of fostering a stable, transparent, and efficient foreign exchange market,” the CBN said in a statement.

Tema High Court slaps shipping lines with GH¢ 54,000 for filing defence out of time

0

The Tema High Court has fined 18 shipping lines a total of GH¢54,000 for filing their defence late in a case brought against them by Johnny Mantey, Tema District Chair of the Ghana Institute of Freight Forwarders.

Mantey, represented by lawyer Noah Adamtey, filed the lawsuit on January 21, 2025.

He accused the shipping lines of violating the Shipping Authority Act 1122, which requires them to submit their service charges to the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority for approval.

The defendants initially entered a conditional appearance on January 31, 2025, but failed to request that the writ be struck out within the required 14-day window.

Their appearance automatically became unconditional, yet they still failed to file a defence within the next 14 days as required by law.

As a result, the plaintiff filed a motion on March 14, 2025, seeking a judgment in default of defence. The court scheduled a hearing for March 27, 2025.

However, at the hearing, the plaintiff’s lawyers chose to withdraw the motion, which the court accepted.

Justice Cynthia Wiredu, presiding over the case, awarded a cost of GH¢54,000 against the defendants for their late filing.

Lawyer Noah Adamtey said the plaintiff will now respond to the defence, after which the case will proceed.

TDC to conduct land, asset audits – MD

0

Courage Kafui Nunekpeku – MD, TDC Ghana Limited.

Mr. Courage Nunekpeku, the Managing Director of TDC Ghana Limited, has announced that the company will be embarking on a lot of property and land audits to confirm initial findings on TDC’s lands.

Mr. Nunekpeku revealed that TDC lost most of its land to the previous government; therefore, so there is a need to conduct the audit.

“All our lands have been sold out; every land of TDC is sold out; commercial and residential are gone. I did an assessment, and they are telling me we have only 23 plots left at Community 24, and we are embarking on a property audit to see if indeed that is what was left for us,” he said.

According to the MD, preliminary checks showed that some of the companies that have been allocated land do not even exist.

Addressing staff of the company at staff durbar, he stated that, “they sold everything, including reservations; even in your backyard, this land was sold…to the extent that the union land, that I was told deductions were made for, that land called Ocean Park, even that land is sold.”

According to him, when he assumed office some weeks ago, the first thing was for him to make a presentation on the lands of TDC to the president, adding that, when he went round, he could not find anything.

Rather, he found portions of reserved lands that have been given to companies like Tema Oil Refinery (TOR) and the Volta Aluminum Company (VALCO).

He further said other available lands were the Kaiser Flats, which have been demolished by the company, as well as some spaces within Community One Site Three.

Mr. Nunekpeku disclosed that as part of the management’s plans, the Site Three infilling project would be enhanced to make it a gated community.

Mr. Nunekpeku added that TDC was taking off containers and squatters in the area to help it achieve the needed enhancement, noting further that they intend to put up two units of 15-storey buildings at Site Three, which, if successful, would be replicated at the Kaiser Flats area.

He said in addition to that, the stretch between the Kingdom Books towards the highway would also be developed into shops and offices to be rented out to add to the inflows of the TDC.

The MD again said the company’s 32 rooms with a pavilion clubhouse at Tema Community Six, which have been abandoned for many years, would be looked at, as he has also contacted professionals, including architects, to look at the best way to remodel it.

Cement shortage hits retailers hard as clinker crisis deepens

0

Some cement dealers across the country are raising concerns over a growing shortage of major cement brands, attributing the disruption to a critical scarcity of clinker — a key raw material in cement production.

In the past two to four weeks, brands such as SOL Cement, Empire Cement, and Dzata Cement have become increasingly difficult to find. This comes on the heels of a GH¢9 price hike on all cement products, largely driven by rising port charges.

Retailers say their inability to restock has had immediate consequences, including turning away customers and losing revenue, as suppliers continue to struggle with clinker procurement.

Augustine Aduful, a cement retailer with over a decade of experience, voiced his frustration in an interview with Citi Business News.

“As for the shortage, it happens every time. You pay, but then you’re told to wait for delivery. As I speak, they are short of clinker. Two weeks ago, I paid for SOL Cement, and when I called yesterday, I was told I won’t get my stock for another two weeks,” Aduful said.

Another dealer, Isaac Frimpong, reported that he has been out of stock of the 32.5R grade of Ghacem cement for several weeks.

“Ghacem, in particular, has been facing a shortage, affecting many businesses. Our customers are now being forced to switch to alternatives like Diamond Cement,” Frimpong explained, calling for government intervention.

“The clinker shortage is being caused by overseas supply issues. Even the recent price hikes are tied to external factors. We hope that with government intervention, the situation will stabilize,” he added.

In response to the crisis, Emmanuel Cherry, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Ghana Chamber of Construction Industry, is pushing for a broader stakeholder dialogue to explore local alternatives to clinker.

“As stakeholders, including the Ministry of Trade and Industry and the Ghana Standards Authority, come together, we need to explore ways to add value to the raw materials we already have. We cannot continue to rely solely on clinker in cement production.

“Our manufacturing sector must start looking within, utilizing available technology and research. We should collaborate with the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research’s Building and Road Research Institute (CSIR-BRRI) to leverage their findings and develop viable alternatives,” Cherry noted.

The shortage has sparked renewed debate over Ghana’s heavy dependence on imported clinker and the long-term sustainability of its cement supply chain.

Govt misses target for 3rd consecutive week by GH¢2.69bn

0

The government has once again fallen short of its Treasury bill target, missing it by GH¢2.69 billion for the third week in a row after rejecting GH¢2.37 billion in bids, likely misaligned with its yield expectations.

According to the latest data from the Bank of Ghana (BoG), the government sought to raise GH¢4.39 billion from short-term debt instruments but received bids totalling GH¢1.69 billion, resulting in an undersubscription of 61.46%.

For the 91-day Treasury bill, GH¢3.38 billion was tendered, with GH¢1.45 billion accepted. The 182-day bill saw GH¢501.17 million tendered, but only GH¢81.09 million was accepted. Meanwhile, GH¢176.26 million was tendered for the 364-day bill, of which GH¢161.26 million was accepted.

Interest rates on Treasury bills continue to trend between 15% and 18%. The 91-day yield declined by six basis points to 15.65%, while the 182-day bill fell by 23 basis points to 16.50%. The 364-day bill dipped by two basis points to 18.83%.

This development follows the Bank of Ghana’s recent decision to raise the policy rate by 100 basis points—from 27% to 28%—to rein in inflationary pressures.

While the Treasury’s sustained bid rejections and efforts to moderate yields may seem at odds with the MPC’s hawkish stance, analysts see it as a move to anchor short-term rates, support liquidity sterilisation, and reset Treasury bills as a benchmark for upcoming longer-dated issuances.

However, continued rejections risk drawing down cash buffers, potentially tightening fiscal space in the near term.

In the next auction, the Treasury aims to raise GH¢6.68 billion.

US cancels visas for South Sudanese over deportation dispute

0

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has announced that the US is immediately revoking visas issued to all South Sudanese passport holders due to the African nation refusing to accept its citizens who have been removed from the U.S.

Rubio, in a statement on Saturday, added that the US will also block any arriving citizens of South Sudan, the world’s newest country, at US ports of entry.

He blamed “the failure of South Sudan’s transitional government to accept the return of its repatriated citizens in a timely manner”.

A cornerstone of President Donald Trump’s immigration policy is removing unlawful migrants from the US, with the promise of “mass deportations”.

“It is time for the Transitional Government of South Sudan to stop taking advantage of the United States,” said Rubio.

“Every country must accept the return of its citizens in a timely manner when another country, including the United States, seeks to remove them,” he added.

It comes as fears grow that South Sudan may again descend into civil war.

On 8 March, the US ordered all its non-emergency staff in South Sudan to leave as regional fighting broke out, threatening a fragile peace deal agreed in 2018.

South Sudanese in the US were previously granted Temporary Protected Status (TPS), which allows them to remain in the US for a set period of time.

TPS for South Sudanese in the US had been due to expire by 3 May.

South Sudan, the world’s newest nation, gained independence in 2011 after seceding from Sudan.

But just two years later, following a rift between President Salva Kiir and Vice-President Riek Machar, the tensions erupted into a civil war, in which more than 400,000 people were killed.

A 2018 power-sharing agreement between the two stopped the fighting, but key elements of the deal have not been implemented – including a new constitution, an election and the reunification of armed groups into a single army.

Sporadic violence between ethnic and local groups has continued in parts of the country.

Since returning to office, the Trump administration has clashed with international governments over deportations of their nationals from the US.

In January, Colombian President Gustavo Petro barred two US military flights carrying deported migrants from landing in his South American country.

Petro relented after Trump promised to place crippling tariffs and sanctions on Colombia.

One of the most famous South Sudanese citizens currently in the US is Duke University star basketball player 18-year-old Khaman Maluach.

A spokesman for the university said on Sunday the school is “aware of the announcement… regarding visa holders from South Sudan”.

“We are looking into the situation and working expeditiously to understand any implications for Duke students.”

Maluach, who played for the South Sudanese Olympic basketball team last summer, spent much of his life in Uganda after fleeing his violence in his homeland as a child.

The first-year student – whose Duke team was eliminated from the national championship tournament Saturday night after losing in the semi-finals to the University of Houston – is widely expected to join the ranks of the NBA after graduation.

Private health facilities justify decision to suspend services over NHIS arrears

0

The Private Health Facilities Association of Ghana (PHFAoG) has instructed all its members to charge National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) cardholders for services related to unpaid claims.

The association cited prolonged delays in reimbursement, with some private facilities reportedly owed up to eight months.

In an interview with Citi News, Deputy General Secretary of PHFAoG, Aaron Nyamekye, stated that the outstanding arrears have placed significant financial strain on private health providers, affecting their ability to operate effectively.

“Even though government through the NHIA has released a statement comforting the service providers that indeed they are going to pay for the services and they have started the process. We have no qualms about that. But in the end, what we want to see is evidence that the payments are in the accounts of the service providers.

“If not, we are going to stand by our action and we are even going to intensify it in the coming days. What we are going to announce to the general public is our crusade on everybody taking money from clients who visit their facilities because there is absolutely no money to run healthcare. That is the current situation.”

The Bank of Ghana (BoG) is set to auction $120 million to Bulk Oil Distribution Companies (BDCs) in the second quarter of 2025.

This forms part of its broader strategy to ease foreign exchange (FX) demand pressures and support the stability of the Ghana Cedi.

Each auction will offer $20 million, bringing the total allocation for the second quarter to $120 million.

The auctions form part of targeted interventions by the Central Bank to manage volatility in the foreign exchange market, especially in the downstream petroleum sector where dollar demand is typically high.

According to the published calendar, the first auction is set for April 10, with subsequent auctions on April 29, May 14 , May 28, June 12 and June 26.

“The Bank of Ghana announces for the information of all Authorised Foreign Exchange Dealing Banks, the Bulk Oil Distribution Companies (BDCs) FX forward Auction Calendar for the second quarter of 2025.
