An obsessive who has lived through tragedy: The man behind PSG’s title

0

“I only know how to compete,” he said to himself when he retired from playing in 2004. Managing was the only option for the former Barcelona and Spain forward.

As a coach, Luis Enrique has copied the philosophy of his former team-mate Pep Guardiola from the beginning.

He hasn’t brought anything truly new to the table, but, using the tonnes of energy he has, he has become one of the top representatives of a broader cultural shift.

His relentless edge is now driving everything at Paris St-Germain, although initially he didn’t even want the job.

He thought the club only cared about names. Players such as Neymar, Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappe. Uncoachable, he assumed.

But when he heard the philosophy had changed – that they now wanted to build a team – he reconsidered.

And, soon after he arrived, Neymar and Marco Verratti were gone. Messi, who might have stayed had he known Luis Enrique was coming, had already committed to Inter Miami.

He understands and appreciates the importance of individual stars, but only up to a point.

In a recent documentary about his first season at PSG, he was seen warning Mbappe, his star player at the time, about his obligation to fulfil his defensive duties – just after the player had scored a hat-trick.

“He’s the best player in the world,” the Asturian insisted several times. “But if the team with the best player in the world always won, PSG would have eight Champions League titles and they haven’t had any.”

He is a manager who respects structure, but is never afraid to speak his mind.

“I’m not afraid of the worst in football… if they sack me, no problem,” he said. “The next day, I’ll go for a cycling trip.”

It’s that perspective that helped him ride out a rocky start last season – including a 4–1 loss to Newcastle in the Champions League and heavy criticism from the supporters.

But he stayed calm and kept faith in his footballing beliefs. Structure, repetition, and positional discipline.

His dream? One day, managers will have mics in the stands and be able to talk players through their positions during a match.

He had to rewire a squad addicted to chaos when he arrived in Paris.

So he spent little time in an office, instead sitting with his assistants, working directly with his players and embedding his ideas.

Some players push back against his intensity. Mbappe, for example, didn’t love being boxed in as a number nine or publicly challenged after a hat-trick.

But others thrive, because he doesn’t do favourites.

Young females in 20 communities empowered through project

0

Project to empower adolescent girls and young women on how best to address their own challenges has successfully ended.

The project, dubbed “Be Smart, Learn and Stay Protected”, was implemented by Plan International Ghana with financial support from Nivea through the German National Office of Plan International.

It covered young females from two regions – Akuapem North in the Eastern Region, Jasikan in the Oti Region and the Upper Manya Krobo District, also in the Eastern Region.

In all, 20 communities were covered.

Challenges

The project was on the theme: “Empowered Girls, Learn and Get Protected from Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV). It enabled the females to go through the necessary aspects of education that will empower them to face challenges.

The initiative, which was carried out in two phases from February 2021-January 2023 and February 2023-January 2025, led to a reduction in teenage pregnancies, strengthened child protection structures, economic empowerment and increased girls’ participation in schools.

It also led to the reaffirmation of the notion of emphasis to be put at the right place on girls and children relating to the empowerment of families and communities.

In his address at a ceremony to end the project in Koforidua last Tuesday, the Country Director of Plan International Ghana, Professor Constant Tchona, said every girl had the right to education, to be heard, to be safe and to thrive.

Enabling environment

He indicated that Plan International’s theory of change was not only to focus on the girl but on creating an enabling environment around her to be empowered to learn and protected from harm.

In view of that, Prof. Tchona stated that his outfit had worked tirelessly to ensure that adolescent girls, especially those facing the greatest challenges, such as sexual and gender-based violence, were given the opportunity to rise above their circumstances.

To support them in overcoming such challenges, the Plan International Ghana Country Director intimated that his organisation had set up adolescent clubs with centres as safe places for learning and growth.

That, he explained, had not only improved their conditions but also made their confidence soar.

Professor Tchona added that such girls formally limited by circumstances now possessed self-assurance to voice their opinions, pursue aspirations and stand tall against challenges faced.

He told the gathering that there had been a decrease in teenage pregnancies in the various communities covered.

Training

Professor Tchona stated that the training had protected the young females from sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV) and created an environment where they could learn, grow and feel secure.

According to the Country Director of Plan International Ghana, one of the most remarkable developments of the initiative had been the unwavering support of community leaders, chiefs, opinion and religious leaders, who not only lent their voices but also took bold action in refusing to preside over any form of injustice against girls, especially those just fined under the guise of culture and tradition.

He was of the view that such communities would no longer tolerate harmful practices affecting girls, adding that the rights of the girls would be upheld.

The girls, he said, had been provided apprenticeship training with start-up kits to start their own livelihoods, while parents were also being supported with loans to take up their responsibilities with dignity and confidence.

Prof. Tchona stressed that the journey had not been with challenges and hoped that the young females would no more face challenges that hitherto went against their progress.

Project Overview

The Project Manager of Be Smart, Learn and Stay Protected, Bless Kofi Vieku, who gave the overview of the project mentioned three out of the 20 communities that had been covered as Akateng in Upper Manya Krobo District, Mangoase in the Akuapem North Municipality and Okajakrom in the Oti Region.

He indicated that the project had significantly reduced teenage pregnancies among teenage girls in the beneficiary communities where the project operated.

Mr Vieku stated that the project was initiated in response to the worsening situation of gender inequalities, teenage pregnancies, school dropouts and sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV), among other issues.

He said the project had a total budget of €654,514 for two years, spanning February 2023 to January 2025, adding that adolescent clubs were established in all the 20 project areas and that each group comprised 15 girls and 10 boys.

Peer educators

Mr Vieku said 10 peer educators were selected from these clubs, consisting of seven girls and three boys, explaining that the peer educators were trained to lead adolescent-friendly activities aimed at improving their peers’ knowledge of adolescent growth and development, protection, risks, behaviours and proactive measures to prevent and protect themselves from abuse.

One of the beneficiaries from the Jasikan Municipality in the Oti Region, Amenuvor Deborah, told the Daily Graphic that the project had built her capacity with knowledge and skills to continue educating her colleagues to minimise or eradicate teenage pregnancy and sexual and gender-based violence in her municipality.

Motorists decry faded road markings

0

Motorists in Accra have raised concerns over the disappearance of essential road markings across the city. These markings, which play a crucial role in guiding traffic and ensuring road safety, are either missing or so faded they’re barely visible.

This troubling development has contributed to a rise in road accidents and confusion among drivers.

Driving through the streets of Accra, one quickly noticed a recurring scene: drivers confused, arguing, or forced to make split-second decisions on the road. Without clear lane divisions or pedestrian crossings, the roads have become a chaotic free-for-all.

From Lapaz to Asylum Down and Circle to Kaneshie, once-visible lane markers have faded into obscurity. In areas like Awoshie, Ablekuma, Odorkor, and Bubuashie, road markings are completely absent, creating dangerous driving conditions for both motorists and pedestrians.

Without proper visual guidance, drivers frequently swerve unexpectedly, switch lanes without signalling, and ignore pedestrian crossings, putting lives at risk.

In conversations with drivers, many expressed frustration, saying the lack of clear road indicators has made daily commuting more stressful and hazardous.
“It is a very problematic situation for us as drivers, especially when you are moving from a linked road to a main road. When not cautious, your car can get hit by an incoming vehicle. When you consider Tudu and its surroundings, just one road has been marked. As for Accra, it is very scarce, and it causes a lot of accidents, so the government has to look at it and do it,” one driver, Prince Quansah, mentioned.
Atukwey Klottey, who is also a driver who plies the Accra road, added, “There are no road marks in Accra, we just drive with instincts and wisdom. The Roads Minister must make his tour on the roads and take inventory of all the roads without signs and do it for us.

“Zebra cross walks are very scarce on our roads, so we drivers have to stop at vantage points and allow pedestrians to pass even though that is not what the law says. The Roads Minister must carefully tackle this issue.”
John Anhful, a station driver, stated, “Some drivers force their way into different lanes when the police are not stationed by the roads. When the driver who has right of way refuses to let him pass, then it can cause an accident. However, when the lanes are properly marked, it will prevent any confusion.”

Adding to the concern, the Public Relations Officer for the National Road Safety Authority echoed the motorists’ frustrations and emphasized the risks that come with unmarked roads, highlighting how poor road demarcation contributes to accidents and endangers lives.

“In some cases, the drivers are aware of what the marks on the road mean. However, without the road indicator, they get confused. The road marks have to be worked on to create clarity,” she said.

Off the record, a road engineer from the Department of Urban Roads attributed the missing markings to poor road surfaces in some areas. However, she assured that efforts are underway to repaint and restore road markings citywide.

Drug trafficking allegations not a popularity stunt

0

Rev. John Ntim Fordjour, Ranking Member on Parliament’s Defence and Interior Committee, has clarified that the Minority’s recent actions concerning alleged drug trafficking are rooted in their constitutional mandate, not a desire for attention.

This comes in response to suggestions that the ranking member’s stance on the matter was a publicity stunt.

Speaking on Channel One Newsroom with Umaru Sanda Amadu on Saturday, April 5, Rev. Fordjour dismissed the claims, saying, “If I wanted to be popular, I would have released the biggest gospel hit and then I would have had the biggest viewership. It has nothing to do with it.”

He emphasised that the Minority’s involvement is strictly based on its oversight responsibilities and concern for national safety.

“It’s a Minority decision to exercise our oversight and particularly to ensuring that our country is safe,” he added.

Shop owners urge govt to provide shelters for head porters

0

Shop owners in Accra Newtown have appealed to the government to urgently provide safe and designated shelters for head porters (kayayei) who currently sleep in front of their shops, warning that the increased number of these women has created sanitation problems and posed safety risks to both the porters and their businesses.

Accra Newtown, a bustling commercial enclave known for its vibrant printing industry and proximity to the Mallam Atta Market, continues to attract head porters, most of them women from northern Ghana seeking better economic opportunities. These women often carry heavy loads for low wages, frequently while caring for infants.
However, their struggles extend beyond working hours. With no access to secure accommodation, many of them are forced to sleep on pavements in front of shops, exposed to theft, harsh weather, and personal insecurity.

While many shop owners sympathize with the porters and allow them to sleep outside their stores without charge, they mentioned that the situation has become untenable.

Safety and hygiene concerns have mounted, and they fear that without urgent intervention, conditions may deteriorate further.
Edward Ankrah, a paper retailer, expressed concern about the growing fire risk due to cooking activities in front of his shop. “I often advise them not to cook here, but they have nowhere else to go,” he said, as he called on the government and NGOs to intervene.

Jacqueline Bentil, a vendor of drinks and clothing, echoed similar concerns, emphasizing the sanitation challenges. “It’s not safe for them or us. We need urgent action from the authorities,” she stressed.
In response to these concerns, Alhassan Abubakar, Chairman of the Works Sub-Committee at the Ayawaso Central Municipal Assembly, disclosed that there were ongoing plans to build a shelter for the head porters. However, he noted that progress had stalled due to resistance from some community members.

Efforts by the Channel One News team to speak with the head porters revealed a sense of fear and vulnerability among them. Many declined to comment, worried they might be evicted. One porter, Aisha, however, opened up, recounting sleepless, rain-soaked nights spent on the streets.

Ghana women beat Senegal in Kim Lars’ first game

0

Kim Lars Bjorkegren picked up a one nil win on his first game as Black Queens head coach in the friendly on Saturday (05 March) against Senegal.

Evelyn Badu scored the only goal of the game as Ghana defeated Senegal in the first of two friendlies of the training tour in Dakar.

The win was also the team’s first since beating Namibia in December 2023 during the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) Qualifiers.

The French-based midfielder netted from a Princess Marfo left-footed cross to hand the Black Queens their first win under the new boss.

Bjorkegren made two changes to the team that started the game against Morocco during the last international break.

Germany-based Josephine Bonsu was handed her first starting berth alongside Badu.

The Queens threatened in the opening minutes of the game but couldn’t find a way past the opposition’s defence.

However, in the 35th minute, Princess made a daunting run down the left flank before finding Badu with a cross, the latter making no mistake from close range as she headed home the opening goal.

Ghana came back from recess looking to double their lead but were reduced to 10 as Anasthesia Achiaa was sent off after picking up a second yellow card.

The two teams will face off again on April 8 before the end of the international window.

Legendary Teddy Osei of Osibisa fame laid to rest

0

The legendary Teddy Osei, renowned for his role in the Afro-pop band Osibisa, was laid to rest following a body viewing and final funeral rites held at his family residence in Chiriapatre, Kumasi, on Saturday, April 5, 2025.

A burial mass was held at the St. Peter’s Cathedral Basilica, near Fante Newtown in Kumasi, after the body viewing, where family members, friends, and loved ones gathered to mourn and celebrate his life.

Born Francis Kwabena Osei on December 17, 1935, and better known as Teddy Osei, he was a Ghanaian musician celebrated for his talents as a saxophonist, drummer, and vocalist. Osei was the founder and leader of Osibisa, the iconic Afro-pop band formed in 1969.

Osibisa’s legacy includes timeless hits such as Woyaya (1971), with the famous lyrics “We are going… Heaven knows where we’re going… We know we will,” as well as Sunshine Day and Dance The Body Music.

Teddy Osei leaves behind three daughters—Matilda, Agnes, and Shanta—as well as several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Widow

In a heartfelt tribute, Benedicta Adu-Poku honored her late husband, Kwabena Teddy Osei, saying, “Today, I pay a glorious tribute to my dear husband, Kwabena Teddy Osei.

As the Book of Romans clearly expresses, our love endures even though you are no longer with me. Your song—We are going, heaven knows where we are going—continues to echo in my heart.”

She also shared that, despite Teddy’s busy schedule and constant travel due to his music career, it never affected the strength and unity of their family.

“If not on tour, he always made time for me and those were very precious times together. I will carry your love with me always, until we meet again”., she soberly said.

Biography

Osei was born in Kumasi, the Ashanti Regional capital. At birth, he was christened “Francis” by his parents – Micheal Kyekyere and Josephine Kyekyere – who were Roman Catholics.

He was the second of seven children. Osei was named after the Ashanti King Osei Tutu I. Osei’s father was an amateur musician who played the horn in the local church band, thus exposing Teddy to music at an early age.

He was introduced to traditional music instruments by his school teacher ,  and played the bass drum in the school band. He also frequently visited the Ashanti Palace, where he occasionally learned folk songs from visiting musicians.

Music career

Following his graduation, Osei worked as an office help for a year, before moving to Sekondi to study craftsmanship at a college. Sekondi was an important commercial and cultural hub, where he encountered a number of modern musicians and genres.

During this time, he was by Ghana’s First President Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah, and supported his political party and its campaign against British colonialism.

After completing his degree, he returned to Kumasi and worked as a building inspector for a brief while, before choosing to become a professional musician.

Teddy created a semi-professional band along with his brother, Mac Tontoh of blessed memory, and some friends. The band was known as “Comets”, and became successful in Ghana, recording with Philip West Africa and playing for a radio show.

Their music was inspired by “Highlife,” a genre derived from a fusion of European and African influences. Comets, enjoyed brief popularity before Osei travelled to London in 1962.

He received a grant from the Ghanaian government to study at a private music and drama school for three years , before being forced to leave by a regime change in Ghana.

In 1969, he founded Osibisa along with several other musicians. The band remained popular through the 1980s and 90s, and continues to perform till date.

Stardom

In 1969, Teddy Osei, Sol Amarfio, and Mac Tontoh came together with other musicians, that they had been previously acquainted with to form Osibisa.

The new band derived its name from “Osibisaaba”, the name given to the style of music that was a fusion of “palm wine” music and traditional Fante fisherman’s traditional music.

In its early stages , Osibisa had neither an agent nor a manager. The band played at psychedelic venues around London while it tried to find financial support.

During the period, Osei played flute, African drums, as well as, saxophone.

The band became an instant success, producing several songs that reached the British top-ten. They were even more popular when playing live.

During the late 1970s they played on several international tours to India, Japan, Australia, New Zealand and several African countries.

In 1980, the band played at a concert celebrating the Independence of Zimbabwe.

Ghana’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has held bilateral discussions with Tomáš Pojar, National Security Advisor of the Czech Republic, aimed at strengthening cooperation between the two countries.

The meeting, held in Accra, focused on key areas of collaboration, including defence, security, scholarships, medical training, and transport, according to a statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and copied to the Ghana News Agency.

During the discussions, Pojar recalled over six decades of diplomatic relations between Ghana and the Czech Republic and emphasized the need to deepen these ties for the mutual benefit of both nations. He reaffirmed his country’s commitment to enhancing bilateral cooperation.

In response, Ablakwa expressed appreciation to the Czech Republic for its longstanding support, particularly in sectors such as agriculture, education, water purification, and security.

He further proposed the organisation of a business forum to facilitate interaction between the business communities of both countries and to harness their respective comparative advantages.

The meeting concluded with both parties reaffirming their commitment to strengthening bilateral relations to improve the welfare of their citizens.

I haven’t been invited to suspicious flights probe

0

Rev. John Ntim Fordjour, Ranking Member of Parliament’s Defence and Interior Committee, has dismissed claims that he has been invited to assist in investigations concerning the alleged influx of suspicious drugs and cash into the country.

Fordjour described such claims as baseless and entirely false.

Speaking on Channel One Newsroom on Saturday, April 5, the MP firmly rejected assertions made by Government Spokesperson Felix Kwakye Ofosu that an invitation had been extended to him.

“No invitation has come to me. I have not received any invitation whatsoever contrary to the lies and falsehood peddled by Kwakye Ofosu that I had been invited and I am running away from collaboration. It is false,” he stated.

Fordjour reiterated his commitment to transparency and accountability, describing the accusations as deliberate attempts to mislead the public.

His comments come at a time of mounting scrutiny over the allegations, with growing calls for clarity and an independent investigation into the matter.

South Africa sees 149% surge in Ghanaian tourists after visa waiver

0

South Africa’s Minister of Tourism, Patricia de Lille South Africa’s Minister of Tourism, Patricia de Lille

South Africa’s Minister of Tourism, Patricia de Lille, has said, the number of Ghanaian tourists visiting her country has surged by 149 percent since the introduction of a visa waiver in November 2023.

Speaking in Accra on March 27, 2025, as part of an outreach program to strengthen tourism ties between the two nations, she described the increase as clear evidence of the success of their partnership.

“The numbers tell a powerful story. From January to December 2024, visitor numbers from Ghana to South Africa grew by an impressive 149 percent compared to the same period in 2023. This is a clear sign that our collaboration is bearing fruit, and we are here to build on that momentum,” she stated.

She credited this growth to the elimination of travel restrictions, improved air connectivity, and the dedication of tourism stakeholders in both countries.

The minister emphasised that beyond the rising figures, the partnership between them is creating economic opportunities and strengthening cultural ties.

“This visit is more than just a formal engagement- it is a reaffirmation of South Africa’s commitment to deepening ties with Ghana, particularly in the tourism sector, which holds immense potential for economic growth, cultural exchange, and shared prosperity,” she said.

Also, she highlighted that easier access to her country has not only encouraged tourism but also facilitated business engagements and family reunions. She positioned it as an ideal destination for corporate events, citing its advanced infrastructure, modern conference facilities, and scenic locations.

“South Africa offers world-class infrastructure, cutting-edge conference facilities, and unique venues set against breathtaking landscapes- making it the ideal location for hosting business events,” she noted.

Addressing safety concerns, she reassured Ghanaian travelers that her country’s government is working diligently to enhance security measures and ensure a safe and welcoming experience for all visitors.

Furthermore, she extended an invitation to Ghanaian travel operators and industry players to attend Africa’s Travel Indaba in Durban from May 12 to 15, 2025. The event, she explained, provides a platform to promote Africa’s tourism potential and strengthen industry collaborations.

Moreover, the minister reaffirmed Ghana’s importance to her country and stressed the broader significance of their partnership. “This is more than tourism- it is about partnership, collaboration, and economic growth. South Africa is open for business, and we are ready to welcome Ghanaian travelers to journey with us,” she said.

Meanwhile, Ghana’s Minister of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, Ms. Dzifa Abla Gomashie, in a speech read on her behalf, said the visit by Minister de Lille was an important step in deepening cooperation between the two countries.

She noted that both nations share a strong historical and cultural connection, which should be leveraged to enhance tourism and create mutually beneficial opportunities.

“This meeting serves as a crucial step in leveraging our shared history, vibrant cultures, and deep connection to enhance our tourism sectors and promote mutually beneficial relationships,” she stated.

She added that, the increase in arrivals demonstrate the growing interest in South Africa as a preferred destination for Ghanaian travelers.

However, she posed an important question: “How can we encourage South African tourists to visit our country and adopt it as their second home?”

To address this, she said strategic steps must be taken to promote the country as an attractive destination for South African travelers. These include joint destination marketing campaigns, curated travel packages tailored to South African tourists, and streamlining visa processes to encourage easier travel.

She also highlighted the need for improved flight connectivity and enhanced cultural exchanges through festivals, music, and art events.

Minister de Lille echoed these sentiments, in a post-event media engagement, emphasising that her country is not only a top destination for leisure but also for business and corporate events.

“South Africa offers world-class infrastructure, cutting-edge conference facilities, and unique venues set against breathtaking landscapes- making it the ideal location for hosting business events,” she noted.

King Paluta can’t win Artiste of the Year

0

Veteran music pundit and executive Ricky Tenneson has tipped Afrobeat sensation King Promise to walk away with the coveted Artiste of the Year award at the upcoming Telecel Ghana Awards (TGMA), set to take place in May.

Tenneson’s endorsement comes amidst fierce debate and anticipation surrounding this year’s lineup of nominees, which includes some of Ghana’s most prominent and hardworking acts.

Speaking on The Chat on Channel One TV on Saturday, April 5, Tenneson offered a detailed breakdown of why he believes King Promise stands out as the frontrunner among the seven shortlisted artistes.

According to him, while the race is undeniably competitive, the real battle narrows down to two major names — King Promise and Stonebwoy — both of whom have had an impressive run over the eligibility period.

Tenneson further elaborated that, contrary to the popular belief that rapper King Paluta is next in line after the top two contenders, his own analysis places Kweku Smoke and Team Eternity Ghana ahead of Paluta in terms of influence, reach, and measurable success during the year under review.

“When it comes to the Artiste of the Year category, it is two people. It is between King Promise and Stonebwoy. Even the third is actually Kweku Smoke and not King Paluta. Even the fourth is Team Eternity and not King Paluta.

“I don’t have anything against King Paluta, but I like to work with science and data a lot. It is even King Promise ahead of anybody. King Promise is the most nominated artiste and he has stayed consistent.”

Talensi NDC office set ablaze over DCE nomination

0

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) constituency office in Talensi, Upper East Region, was set on fire around 2:30 a.m. on Saturday, April 5.

Eyewitnesses say the attack occurred shortly after John Millim Naabwomya was announced as the party’s nominee for District Chief Executive (DCE).

Naabwomya’s nomination has sparked intense opposition among some party members and supporters, who argue he is unpopular and was selected due to his alleged loyalty to the Paramount Chief of Talensi, Tongraan Nanlebegtang Kugbilsong, rather than through grassroots consensus.

Concerns have also been raised over his alleged links to Chinese mining companies, with residents fearing he may favor the interests of the Chinese mining companies over community welfare.

A formal petition was submitted in January 2025 urging the party’s regional leadership to reject his nomination.

The perpetrators of the arson are yet to be identified.

Tamale youth commend Mahama for nominating Adam Takoro as Mayor

0

A group calling itself the Concerned Youth of Tamale Metro has expressed deep appreciation to President John Dramani Mahama for the nomination of Hon. Alhaji Abubakari Adam Takoro as the Mayor of Tamale.

At a press conference held in Tamale and read by Imrana sayibu Gomda, Secretary to the group, on Saturday, April 5, the youth group described the nomination as a “pivotal moment in the development journey of the Metropolis,” lauding the President’s decision as both wise and timely.

Highlighting Takoro’s contributions to the region and the National Democratic Congress (NDC), the group praised his efforts in grassroots mobilization, youth empowerment, and community development.

“His tireless work in mobilizing the party base and advocating for the needs of the Northern Region has earned him great respect within the Metropolis,” a spokesperson stated.

They also commended his leadership in youth development initiatives, noting that many young people have benefited from his commitment to inclusion, mentorship, and community engagement.

The group further emphasized Hon. Takoro’s role in championing key development projects in Tamale, particularly in areas such as healthcare, education, and infrastructure.

They called on all stakeholders, including traditional authorities, civil society organizations, and political actors, to support Hon. Takoro’s confirmation and tenure.

Special recognition was also given to Members of Parliament Hon. Haruna Iddrisu and Hon. Ibrahim Mohammed Murtala for their support in facilitating the nomination.

The youth concluded by expressing confidence that Hon. Takoro’s leadership will bring “prosperity and sustainable development” to Tamale and the wider Northern Region.

pundit criticises Black Sherif’s ‘Iron Boy’ for failing to honour Amakye Dede

0

commentator Ricky Tenneson has expressed his disappointment over what he describes as a missed opportunity by Black Sherif to properly honour Ghanaian highlife legend Amakye Dede in his new Iron Boy album.

The album, which was released on Wednesday, April 2, had been billed by Black Sherif himself as a homage to the iconic singer — a sentiment that raised expectations across the music community for a project that would reflect elements of Amakye Dede’s rich musical legacy.

However, in an interview on The Chat on Channel One TV on Saturday, April 5, Tenneson expressed shock and dismay over the complete absence of any musical or lyrical tribute to Amakye Dede across the entire album.

He pointed out that despite the album’s title and prior statements made by Black Sherif, there was no thematic, sonic, or symbolic representation of the highlife legend’s influence anywhere on the project.

“This [album] was supposed to pay homage to Amakye Dede the Iron Boy, but there was nothing like that. The tape doesn’t have anything related to Amakye Dede, and so I was like, what was the whole linkage about paying homage to Amakye Dede?

“A day before the release, there was a conversation between Black Sherif and Kwadwo Sheldon where he said this project was actually to pay homage to the Iron Boy [Amakye Dede], and so I was expecting to see elements of that, but nothing. With even the Iron Boy song on the album, I was expecting to see that, but there was no connection in any way.”

TDC MD calls on EOCO to investigate past operations

0

The Managing Director of TDC Ghana Limited, Mr. Courage Kafui Nunekpeku, has formally requested the Economic and Organized Office (EOCO) to investigate some past operations of the company, particularly concerning contracts and asset management.

Speaking during a staff durbar, Mr. Nunekpeku disclosed that an internal review of all departments revealed widespread irregularities that warranted external scrutiny. He said the decision to involve EOCO stems from what he described as “issues everywhere” within the company’s operations.

“In the coming days, there are going to be a lot of investigations. This morning, I wrote two letters to EOCO. One is to investigate an IT contract worth one million dollars for software we currently don’t have access to,” he revealed.

The second letter, he added, pertains to another matter he chose to keep confidential at this time. In addition, Mr. Nunekpeku announced plans to launch extensive land and property audits to verify suspicions concerning TDC’s land assets.

He urged staff who may have information or were involved in questionable activities in the past to come forward voluntarily.

“If you don’t come and we find out during the investigations, I won’t accept any pleas whether you’re a polling agent or have worked here for years because you’ve been given the opportunity today,” he cautioned.

In a shift from past spending practices, Mr. Nunekpeku said the company would no longer invest in new vehicles for management but would instead procure utility vehicles such as Urvan buses, a backhoe, a dumper, and a tipper truck to support TDC’s core operations.

He called for unity and cooperation among staff to revamp the fortunes of TDC, stating that with its significant assets and government backing, the company has the potential to become a world-class institution.

“There is no way we are going to fix this company if we are not intentional about it. We must all commit to this mission. The President has made it clear: TDC must be fixed, or risk being absorbed by institutions like TMA or the State Housing Corporation,” he emphasized.

Mr. Nunekpeku also condemned corrupt practices, including invoice falsification and financial mismanagement, warning that such behaviors would no longer be tolerated.

Citing an example, he said, “I saw an invoice for GHS45,000 to wash curtains at a former MD’s house. That’s outrageous. For that amount, we could buy a GHS15,000 washing machines and GHS1,000 worth of detergent and keep the machine for future use.”

He concluded by encouraging staff to protect the company’s assets and prioritize accountability, saying, “We are here to serve the nation. Let’s be responsible and protect the public purse.”

Meet Sheila Azuntaba: the new Acting Deputy MD of Consolidated Bank Ghana

0

A former Miss Ghana and experienced finance professional, Sheila Azuntaba has been appointed as the new Deputy Managing Director of Consolidated Bank Ghana (CBG), marking a new chapter in her career and setting a strong example of leadership built on purpose and determination.

Her appointment, effective March 26, 2025, was announced alongside that of Naomi Wolali Kwetey, who has been nominated by President John Dramani Mahama to serve as Acting Managing Director of CBG.

The nominations were confirmed in a letter signed by Finance Minister Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, addressed to the Board Chairman of the bank.

“You [Board] are required to regularize the appointments in compliance with the Companies Act, 2019 (Act 992) and the Bank’s Constitution,” the letter stated.

Taking to Instagram to express her gratitude and excitement, Azuntaba posted:

“A New Dawn at CBG!
First and foremost, I give all glory to God Almighty for this incredible opportunity. He truly does all things in His own time and on His own terms. This is a divine reminder that His plans are always perfect, and His timing is unmatched.
Congratulations to @dr.naomi_kwetey, our new Managing Director of Consolidated Bank Ghana! It is with immense pride and joy that I celebrate this groundbreaking moment — not just for our institution, but for women everywhere who continue to rise, take up space, and shatter glass ceilings.
As your deputy, I pledge my unwavering support, loyalty, and commitment to your vision and leadership. I will show up — always — with excellence, purpose, and strength, ready to serve and drive our collective mission forward.
I am deeply grateful to H.E. @officialidmahama, President of the Republic of Ghana, for the honor of being nominated as Deputy Managing Director of Consolidated Bank Ghana. I do not take this responsibility lightly, and I pledge to serve with integrity, excellence, and a heart for impact.
I also extend my sincere appreciation to H.E. Professor @njoagyemang, Vice President of the Republic. Thank you for blazing the trail and being an extraordinary example of what women in leadership can achieve. You continue to inspire a generation of women to dream, to lead, and to rise with confidence and purpose.”

With more than 20 years of experience in the banking and finance sector, Sheila Azuntaba brings a wealth of knowledge to her new role. She has worked across Ghana, Kenya, and Nigeria, and notably served as Assistant Vice President at Citigroup’s Global Transaction Services Unit in Nigeria, where she was involved in product development, marketing, and sales strategies.

Aside from her corporate roles, Azuntaba is well-known for promoting financial support for women. As the founder and CEO of Innovative Microfinance Ltd, she has helped improve the lives of over 100,000 people in Ghana’s Northern Region, offering small loans and financial education to women and families in need.

“The North is like a breadbasket of Ghana,” Azuntaba explained in an earlier interview with thosewhoinspire.com. “You go to the North, and you see a woman, and she’s got four or five kids to feed, and a lot of times they don’t even sleep. So when you see that, the best thing you could do is give her that extra push.”

Her public journey began in 1996 when she became the first woman from the northern part of the country to win the Miss Ghana crown. She credits her mother’s influence in shaping her character. “She always wanted her kids to be very independent, very strong, and very focused — those were the values she passed on to us.”

Azuntaba holds a BA (Hons) in Marketing from the University of Westminster in London and an MBA in Finance from Strathclyde Business School in Glasgow, Scotland.

At CBG — a government-owned universal bank licensed by the Bank of Ghana — she is expected to help improve the bank’s operations and long-term development.

Ghana Athletics (GA) has suspended coaches Wisdom Loh and Jeffrey Nkrumah with immediate effect following serious allegations of abuse and exploitation of athletes, including minors. The governing body has barred the duo from all GA-related activities, both domestically and internationally, pending a full investigation.

In a press release issued March 26, GA cited violations of the World Athletics Integrity Code of Conduct (Article 3.3.17), accusing Loh and Nkrumah of undermining the authority of the federation and engaging in actions that “bring disrepute” to the sport. The investigation will also probe whether their conduct facilitated the exploitation of Ghanaian athletes, both locally and abroad.

The GA emphasized its commitment to safeguarding athletes, aligning with World Athletics’ policies against exploitation and abuse. “These allegations, particularly those involving minors, are shocking and embarrassing,” the statement read. One case, described as bordering on criminality, has been escalated to World Athletics for further guidance.

Recent reports have highlighted a troubling pattern of abuse in school athletics programs, with some victims allegedly left traumatized or even pregnant. The GA vowed to address these systemic issues, stating, “Safeguarding violations breach national and international laws, as well as the human rights of athletes. We will ensure accountability.”

The federation warned athletes, coaches, and officials against collaborating with the suspended individuals during the investigation, stating that such interactions could result in sanctions, including bans from GA events.

GA President Bawah Fuseini reiterated the organization’s dedication to ethical standards: “Our priority is protecting athletes and restoring trust in Ghanaian athletics. We will not tolerate actions that harm our athletes or tarnish the sport’s integrity.”

Red Crescent video challenges Israeli account of aid workers’ deaths

0

The rescue service said the Israeli military attacked an ambulance and a fire engine in the southern Gaza city of Rafah on March 23. The bodies of 14 of the men were recovered from a mass grave seven days later.

The Israeli military said at the time that its forces had opened fire on several vehicles after they approached troops in a suspicious manner, without coordination or headlights. Israeli officials said the soldiers had killed members of the Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad groups.

The Palestinian Red Crescent said on Saturday that it had retrieved a mobile phone from one of the killed paramedics, which held video material of the rescue squad.

The video, shared by the rescue service on X, shows clearly marked ambulances and a fire engine driving with their headlights and blue emergency lights switched on.

The video recording stops after less than a minute when the convoy comes under Israeli fire. However, the audio recording continues for several minutes and includes prayers spoken by the attackers as well as unintelligible shouts of command in Hebrew by the Israeli soldiers.

The Palestinian Red Crescent said the unarmed rescue workers were shot at close range, contrary to the Israeli account that soldiers fired at approaching suspicious vehicles.

“This video unequivocally refutes the occupation’s claims that Israeli forces did not randomly target ambulances, and that some vehicles had approached ‘suspiciously without lights or emergency markings,’” the rescue service wrote on X.

An Israeli military spokesman told the Times of Israel newspaper that the incident would be thoroughly investigated, including the video and audio material.

Let’s be vigilant, increase surveillance for meningitis – GHS DG

0

The Director-General of the Ghana Health Service (GHS), Professor Samuel Kaba Akoriyea, has called on stakeholders in the Upper East Region to intensify vigilance and surveillance efforts against Cerebrospinal Meningitis (CSM), amid ongoing health concerns in northern Ghana.

Addressing the Upper East Regional Coordinating Council during a working visit to the region, Professor Akoriyea stressed the importance of public education on the symptoms and preventive measures of meningitis to ensure early detection and treatment.

His call comes in the wake of confirmed cases earlier this year in the Upper West Region, where 16 lives were lost out of 173 suspected cases. In the Upper East Region, two deaths have been recorded from 31 suspected cases, although the region has yet to declare an official outbreak.

“Though the situation appears to be under control, we cannot be complacent. Stakeholders, particularly in the Upper West and Upper East Regions, must remain on high alert to prevent further spread.” Professor Akoriyea cautioned.

He expressed concern over the public’s reluctance to seek early medical attention when symptoms appear but assured that the Ghana Health Service had procured sufficient vaccines to respond swiftly to any potential outbreak.

The Director-General also emphasized the need for heightened surveillance at Ghana’s borders, noting that the proximity to Sahelian countries poses a continuous risk of cross-border infections.

In addition to health concerns, Professor Akoriyea drew attention to the acute shortage of health workers in the region. He attributed the challenge to insecurity in conflict-prone areas such as Bawku, which discourages health professionals from accepting postings.

“Without peace, health indicators will not improve,” he stressed, highlighting that safety fears undermine healthcare delivery in the region.

He further criticized external interference in staff postings and transfers, urging local authorities to support the equitable distribution of healthcare workers across all districts.

Responding on behalf of the Upper East Regional Minister, Mr. Donatus Atanga Akamugri, the Acting Regional Coordinating Director, Al-Hassan Ibrahim Abdul-Kadir, acknowledged the concerns raised and assured that the Regional Minister would work to address them. He added that collaborative efforts with the Ghana Medical Association were underway to improve the security and working environment for health professionals in the region.

Sammy Gyamfi addresses claims of excessive powers given to GoldBod

Sammy Gyamfi is the Acting Managing Director of the PMMC Sammy Gyamfi is the Acting Managing Director of the PMMC

The Acting Managing Director of the Precious Minerals Marketing Company (PMMC), Sammy Gyamfi, has addressed concerns regarding the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) having excessive power under the current administration.

Speaking on News File on Saturday, April 5, 2025, and monitored by GhanaWeb Business, Sammy Gyamfi said that GoldBod’s exclusive role as the sole commercial buyer of gold in the country leaves no room for competition in the sector.

According to him, the mandate given to GoldBod is clear, as it is tasked with the buying and exporting of gold, which he believes eliminates any potential for a conflict of interest in its operations.

“You said GoldBod has been given too much power in regulation and commerce, but it’s not necessarily so. GoldBod has no competitor in the market in its core mandate of trading gold, specifically buying and exporting gold. So where would the conflict of interest arise?” he explained.

Gyamfi further clarified that the regulatory power entrusted to GoldBod is intended to help manage and regulate licensed gold-buying agents on behalf of the government.

He added that the regulatory function is designed to ensure transparency and proper oversight in the gold trade.

“GoldBod has licensed agents buying and selling on its behalf with funds given to the agents to work for them. These are provisions we put in our laws to enhance alternative dispute resolution. It’s not a matter of giving too much power to an agency,” he clarified.

The Ghana Gold Board is a state-owned institution mandated to regulate and promote the development of the gold industry in the country.

Jose Mourinho banned after for pinching Galatasaray manager’s nose

Jose Mourinho has picked up a three-match ban for pinching the nose of Galatasaray coach Okan Buruk’s nose.

The Special One’s feud with Galatasaray continued in the aftermath of Fenerbahce’s Turkish Super Cup loss to their rivals when he walked up behind Buruk and grabbed his nose, sending the head coach to the floor, apparently in agony. Now, reports say the Portuguese boss has been slapped with a three-match suspension.

The Turkish Football Federation were exploring a potential five to 10 match ban for the former Chelsea boss but opted to reduce his punishment after accepting that he was initially provoked by Buruk at full-time. It is the second time in 2025 that Mourinho is facing a touchline ban, after being hit with four matches in February after being accused of making racist comments about the Galatasaray bench.

Alongside Mourinho, Galatasaray players Baris Alper Yılmaz and Kerem Demirbay, as well as Fenerbahce player Fred, have been handed three-match bans. Fenerbahce’s Merk Hakan is also being suspended for one match.

Depending on when the ban comes into effect, Mourinho could miss key games against Trabzonspor, Sivasspor and Kayserispor. Fenerbahce sit six points behind Galatasaray at the top of the Turkish Super Lig with a game in hand.

Iranian president sacks deputy for ‘lavish’ Antarctic cruise

0

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has fired one of his deputies for taking a “lavish” trip to Antarctica with his wife during Nowruz, the Persian new year.

The president’s office described Shahram Dabiri’s trip as “unjustifiable and unacceptable given the ongoing economic challenges” in Iran.

A picture of Dabiri and his wife posing in front of MV Plancius, which was bound for the South Pole, circulated widely on social media and caused outrage in Iran.

In a statement on Saturday, Pezeshkian said Dabari had been removed as vice president of parliamentary affairs for “indefensible” actions, regardless of whether they were financed from his own pocket.

“In a government that seeks to follow the values of the first Shia Imam (Imam Ali), and amid significant economic pressures on our people, the lavish travels of government officials, even when personally financed, are indefensible,” Pezeshkian said.

Iran’s economy is under significant strain and subject to Western sanctions due in part to its support of groups including Hamas and Hezbollah, which have been proscribed terrorist organisations by the US, UK and the EU.

Iran’s unemployment rate as of October 2024 was 8.4%, according to the International Monetary Fund (IMF), while its annual inflation rate was 29.5%.

Pezeshkian said Dabiri’s actions “starkly contradict the principle of simplicity that is paramount for those in positions of authority”.

The Antarctica expedition on the MV Plancius reportedly has a starting cost equivalent to $6,685 (£5,187).

Usually, visits to the coldest and least populated continent in the world are carried out by scientists and seasoned explorers.

However, tourism voyages on cruises have surged in popularity in recent years. The Dutch vessel pictured in the picture of Dabiri, for example, was used by the Royal Netherlands Navy for military and civilian research between 1976 and 2004.

It is not clear what expedition package Dabiri chose or what mode of transport he took from Iran to Antarctica.

On one of the many package deals available online, explorers need to embark and disembark from Ushuaia, one of the southernmost points of Argentina. The town is about 3,079km (1,913 miles) from Buenos Aires, the Argentinian capital.

The Iranian president was elected last year with a promise to revive the economy and improve Iranians’ daily lives. He replaced Ebrahim Raisi, who was killed in a helicopter crash.

Iranian media reported that many of Pezeshkian’s supporters urged him to remove Dabiri from post as the public grew disgruntled over the trip.

Sceenshots of the contents of the containers intercepted by National Security Sceenshots of the contents of the containers intercepted by National Security

The Director in Charge of Special Operations at National Security, Richard Jakpa, has revealed details about a massive stash of counterfeit US dollars, Ghanaian cedi notes, and suspected gold bars hidden in 12 shipping containers intercepted at a warehouse in Sapeiman, Accra.

Speaking in a video shared by Accra-based Radio Gold, the National Security Director stated that the containers had not yet been fully opened, as investigations are still ongoing to identify the individuals responsible for the items.

He disclosed that the boxes found inside the containers are the same type used by the Bank of Ghana (BoG) to import cash into the country, raising concerns about how such boxes, allegedly belonging to the central bank, ended up in the possession of private individuals.

“These are all Bank of Ghana boxes. This is what they use to import our currency… We want the kingpins themselves to be present before we open them. That’s why the area is under 24-hour surveillance, and we’re working to track down those responsible,” he said while pointing to the contents of one of the containers.

Another container he opened revealed more of what he described as “Bank of Ghana” boxes.

He reiterated, “Until I get the kingpin, I cannot open them.”

Jakpa also indicated that the agency has gathered evidence linking some suspects to the warehouse in question.

Background:

National Security officers recently intercepted a massive stash of counterfeit US dollars, Ghanaian cedi notes, and suspected gold bars hidden in 12 shipping containers at a warehouse in Sapeiman, Accra.

According to multiple reports on X, two of the containers are still missing, and a manhunt has been launched for suspects, including a ringleader known only as “Alhaji.”

The containers were traced to a warehouse in the Ga South Municipality, where a late-night special operation was carried out following a tip-off.

The counterfeit currencies, primarily bundles of US dollars, were discovered concealed in wooden boxes covered with cement. Additional fake notes were also found in boxes sealed with plywood and layered with charcoal.

In addition to the counterfeit cash, boxes containing metal bars suspected to be gold, along with fake Ghana Army uniforms and boots, were also discovered.

Two of the containers remain unaccounted for and are currently being actively tracked by National Security operatives.

Ghana Maritime Authority engages fishery stakeholders on security, sea safety

0

Dr. Kamal-Deen Ali is Director-General of the Ghana Maritime Authority Dr. Kamal-Deen Ali is Director-General of the Ghana Maritime Authority

Dr. Kamal-Deen Ali, Director-General of the Ghana Maritime Authority (GMA), has engaged stakeholders in the fishery sector on enhancing maritime safety, sustainable fishing practices, and combating illegal activities at sea.

The meeting was held to strengthen collaboration between the GMA and the National Fisheries Association of Ghana (NAFAG).

It was also to address concerns affecting Ghana’s maritime sector, particularly the incursion of oil and gas protection zones, piracy, maritime security of vessels at sea and conditions of seafarers.

It became known during the engagement that the number of canoe incursions at the oil and gas zones rose to 78 in 2024 compared to 27 recorded in 2023.

Dr. Ali expressed concern over the rising number of canoes trespassing into restricted oil and gas protection zones at sea, describing the development as a serious threat to national safety and maritime security.

He noted that despite ongoing efforts to regulate Ghana’s maritime domain, the unlawful presence of canoes within the zones continues to pose significant risks to both the fishing community and the country’s offshore oil operations.

He said although the GMA acknowledges some challenges of artisanal fishers, the safety of Ghana’s maritime space must not be compromised, adding that unauthorised presence does endanger lives and threatens the integrity of key national assets.

“One incursion is important, ten important, 20 is scary, and 50 or 70 is at an unacceptable level in terms of the industry standards. In fact, if these were happening in any developed country, they would have declared it a national crisis,” he stated.

Touching on piracy, he underscored the grave threat it poses to maritime safety and national security, emphasising that the increasing incidents of piracy do not only endanger the lives of seafarers but also disrupt essential maritime trade routes and exert a negative impact on the national economy.

According to him, the menace of piracy imposes substantial financial burdens on shipping companies, saying that the appropriate stakeholders would be engaged to strengthen the maritime surveillance systems and heightened vigilance across the country’s territorial waters.

He mentioned that there would soon be a formal engagement aimed at addressing and improving the conditions of service for seafarers, acknowledging the essential role maritime workers play in sustaining the shipping industry.

Nana Jojo Solomon, President of NAFAG, thanked the Director-General for initiating the dialogue and acknowledged that incidents of canoe incursions were indeed a growing concern, giving the assurance of their readiness to cooperate fully with the GMA in addressing these issues.

Solomon noted that many of the canoe operators were not fully aware of the locations of these oil and gas zones or the risks involved in entering them and thus appealed for educational outreach programmes to ensure that NAFAG members were better informed.

He added that NAFAG was committed to promoting safe fishing practices and would work with all stakeholders to reduce activities that posed a threat to the maritime space.

Why designers’ apology failed to pacify Omar Abdullah

0

Omar Abdullah

Outrage over a fashion show in Gulmarg found wide echo in the Jammu and Kashmir assembly on Monday with Chief Minister Omar Abdullah saying his government had no role in the event organised at a private hotel and would not have given its permission even if it was not Ramzan.

At the centre of the controversy over the show, which Kashmir’s chief priest Mirwaiz Umar Farooq dubbed obscene, were designer duo Shivan & Narresh. As the issue over the March 7 fashion walk through the snow meadows in Gulmarg escalated, they expressed deep regret.

The Delhi-based designers, whose full names are Shivan Bhatiya and Narresh Kukreja, had showcased their skiwear collection to mark the 15th anniversary of their label.

“Our sole intention was to celebrate creativity and the ski & apres-ski lifestyle, without any desire to offend anyone or any religious sentiments.

“Respect for all cultures and traditions is at our heart, and we acknowledge the concerns raised. We sincerely apologise for any unintended discomfort and appreciate the feedback from our community. We remain committed to being more mindful and respectful,” the designers said in a statement on Sunday night.

The apology did little to assuage the anger.

A day after Abdullah asked for a report on the matter, he said in the assembly that those who organised the fashion show had not applied their mind, shown disregard to public sentiment and paid no attention to where it was happening and its timing.

“Some people are saying that such a show should not have happened in the month of Ramzan. After what I have seen, I am of the opinion that it should not have taken place any time of the year,” he said.

Making a statement in the House after the Question Hour which was disrupted for the first nearly half-hour over the issue of the fashion show and three civilian killings in Billawar area of Kathua district, the chief minister said the “disappointment and concern” of the members are genuine.

He also said if permission had been been sought from the government, it would not have been given. “If law has been violated, strict action will be taken.” “It was a private party, organised at a private hotel and distributed invitations privately. No permission was sought from the government, no money was taken from the government, no government infrastructure was used and no government official was present in the event,” the chief minister said.

People’s Democratic Party chief Mehbooba Mufti said the event “descended into an indecent spectacle” and that too during Ramzan.

“Deeply troubling to witness vulgar images from the recent fashion show in Gulmarg… It is deplorable that private hoteliers are allowed to promote such vulgarity through these events, which blatantly contradict our cultural values,” she said in a post on X.

The issue had its inevitable political fallout.

Hitting out at the government, the former chief minister said it cannot simply absolve itself of responsibility by labelling the show a private affair.

“Shrugging off accountability could pave the way for more such events, ultimately inflicting severe damage on our culture and society,” she said.

PDP leader and Mehbooba’s daughter Ilitija Mufti echoed her and said the chief minister himself holds the portfolio of the tourism department and obviously, without his knowledge such events cannot happen.

“If he is saying he has no knowledge it is also wrong why he had not been informed. But if he had knowledge and allowed it during this sacred fasting month of Ramzan, he and his government had to take the responsibility because it had happened under their nose. He (CM) knows how our sensibilities are,” she said at a press conference.

Farooq Ahmed Shah, the ruling National Conference MLA from Gulmarg, was scathing in his criticism of the fashion show and said the government had taken serious note of the matter and ordered an inquiry.

“We emphasize the importance of respecting the beliefs and sentiments of all communities and religions. Such events are unacceptable and must not be repeated in the future,” he said.

As pictures and videos from the event flooded social media platforms showcasing the designs, some featuring scantily clad men and women, many spoke out.

“Outrageous! That in the holy month of Ramzan an obscene fashion show is organised in #Gulmarg, pictures and videos from which have gone viral sparking shock and anger among people,” the Mirwaiz said on X on Sunday.

“How could it be tolerated in the valley known for its Sufi, saint culture and the deeply religious outlook of its people?” he asked.

Abdullah took cognisance of the post and responded, “The images I have seen show a complete disregard for local sensitivities & that too during this holy month.” He added that his office was in touch with the local authorities and he had asked for a report to be submitted within 24 hours.

Many others also articulated their objections.

Social activist Raja Muzaffar Bhat described the event as an attempt to demolish the moral, religious and ethical values of Kashmir.

“Who allowed this nude fashion show at Gulmarg in Holy Ramzan? Semi nude men and women walking on snow. Will Tourism Deptt, CEO GDA throw some light? Why are you hell bound to demolish our moral, ethical, cultural and religious values (sic)?” he asked in a post on X.

In the chorus of condemnation, there were few voices who spoke up in defence of the designers.

“The objection to a fashion show held in Gulmarg demonstrates the prevalence of a medieval mindset in Kashmir,” said one social media user on X.

“Government more offended by a fashion show in Gulmarg than targeted killings of innocent people in Billawar. Talk about misplaced priorities,” added another.

“There are issues everywhere” – TDC Boss orders EOCO probe into $1m IT contract, others

0

The Managing Director of TDC Ghana Limited, Courage Kafui Nunekpeku, has asked the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) to investigate some of the company’s past activities.

Mr. Nunekpeku announced this when he was briefing staff on the state of the TDC during a staff durbar, indicating that he had done extensive assessments in all the company’s departments and realised that “there were issues everywhere.”

“In the coming days, there are going to be a lot of investigations. This morning, I wrote two letters to EOCO to come and look into something at the IT department. IT contracts were awarded for one million dollars, and we don’t have access to that software, so EOCO will intervene in it,” he said.

He added he had also written another letter to EOCO to look into another issue which he wanted to remain discrete about.

He noted that the company would also embark on a lot of property and land audits to confirm initial findings on TDC’s lands.

The MD urged staff of the company who might have some information or are involved in some underhand dealings in the past years to voluntarily approach him with the needed information instead of waiting to be found out.

Mr. Nunepkeku cautioned that “if you don’t come, and we do investigations and find out, I won’t accept any pleas, whether you were a polling agent or have worked in the company for years, because you have been given the opportunity today.”

He further announced that the company would not purchase new vehicles for management staff but would rather buy Urvan buses, a backhoe, a dumper, and a tipper truck, as those were more helpful in the enhancement of TDC.

He called on all staff to cooperate with management in turning the fortunes of the TDC, reminding them that private estate companies are making it; therefore, TDC, with its huge assets and the backing of the state, could be turned into a world-class company.

“There is no way we are going to do this if we are not into it and being intentional about it. We need all of your support to move as a team. It’s not about how much money you want to make; if it’s about that we can make good money in the private sector, but per the instructions we received from the President, TDC should be fixed; if not, the likes of TMA and State Housing Corporation would absorb it,” he stressed.

The MD cautioned that the days of corruption, falsification of invoices, and fraudulent presentation of invoices, among others, must cease, encouraging all staff to be vigilant and to probe things.

He said: “For the few weeks that I have been in office, some of the things I have seen will blow your mind. Because I come from the private sector, I scrutinise everything. You have to scrutinise the invoice before even forwarding it for approval.”

Mr. Nunekpeku urged all the staff  to be responsible citizens by protecting the assets of the company and the purse of the country.

Supreme Court to hear case on Chief Justice’s removal process on April 9

0

On Wednesday, April 9, the Supreme Court will hear a pivotal constitutional case challenging the process initiated to possibly remove Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo from office.

The lawsuit, filed by the Member of Parliament for Old Tafo, Vincent Ekow Assafuah, disputes the procedure followed by President John Mahama after receiving three separate petitions seeking Torkornoo’s removal.

Mohammed Kudus breaks barren spell with crucial assist for West Ham

0

Ghanaian midfielder Mohammed Kudus has finally ended his lengthy drought without a Premier League goal involvement, registering a crucial assist in West Ham United’s 2-2 draw with Bournemouth at the London Stadium.

This assist marks a significant confidence boost for the 24-year-old, who has struggled to replicate his impressive debut season form.

Kudus, who joined West Ham from Ajax last summer, had gone 13 consecutive matches without a goal or assist, raising concerns about his attacking output.

However, he silenced his critics with a clever play, setting up Jarrod Bowen’s 68th-minute goal.

The former Ajax midfielder breezed past his marker and holds him off before delivering a decent cross to set up Jarred Bowen who calmly slotted it in.

This assist marks his first Premier League goal contribution since December 21, 2024 where he scored in the 1-1 draw against Brighton.

The Ghana international’s recent form had been under scrutiny, with questions surrounding his ability to make a direct impact on games.

However, his latest assist could be the confidence boost he needs as West Ham continues their push for European qualification.

Kudus’ recent performances for the Black Stars, where he scored his first goal since January 18, 2024, in Ghana’s 3-0 thrashing of Madagascar, seem to have given him a much-needed confidence boost.

His ability to make a direct impact on games has been a hallmark of his career, and this latest assist could be a sign that he is returning to his best form.

West Ham’s draw with Bournemouth means the Hammers  confirm their stay in the topflight despite early struggles in the league.

With several matches remaining, the Hammers will be looking to secure as many points as possible to guarantee a top-10 finish.

Kudus’ latest assist could be a crucial factor in their push for European qualification.

West Ham’s next match is against league leaders, Liverpool at Anfield which could be a crucial test for the 2023 Conference League winners.

‘Next time, don’t pair me with a rude, unruly reverend father’

Tension flared between the Member of Parliament for South Dayi, Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor, and his colleague Member of Parliament for Assin South, Reverend John Ntim Fordjour, during a panel discussion on Metro TV on Friday, April 4, 2025.

The show began on a peaceful note but escalated into a heated exchange when the two lawmakers discussed allegations made by the Assin South MP regarding two suspicious flights that landed at Kotoka International Airport in March and departed for Gran Canaria, Spain, on March 25, 2025.

The Assin South MP maintained that his intelligence indicated the flights—an air ambulance and a private jet—might have been involved in drug trafficking or money laundering. However, the South Dayi MP dismissed these claims as baseless.

The exchanges intensified, leading the South Dayi MP to express his frustration to the host of the show:

“Next time, don’t pair me with a rude and unruly reverend father like him. Don’t pair me with him… no, no, don’t pair me with him.”

The show host swiftly interjected, stating that the comments were unfair and amounted to a personal attack on Reverend Ntim Fordjour.

The South Dayi MP responded: “You can actually scandalize a government and think that you should be allowed to go scot-free? He won’t take any admonishment from you; he kept interrupting me. There are ethics on this program. If he cannot stand and operate by the ethics, he shouldn’t appear on the program.”

Following continued protests from the host, the South Dayi MP withdrew his comments.

Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor further criticized the Assin South lawmaker, stating that he had his facts wrong:

“His geography is so poor that he does not know that the Canary Islands are off the coast of Morocco. There is only maritime water serving as a boundary between Las Palmas and Casablanca. So, if a plane lifts off from Las Palmas and lands in Casablanca, he has a problem.”

The MP for Assin South, Reverend John Ntim Fordjour, who is also the Minority’s Ranking Member on the Defence and Interior Committee, had earlier claimed at a press conference that the flights—an air ambulance and a private jet—might have been involved in drug trafficking or money laundering.

He alleged that one of the aircraft, Air MED flight L823 AM, landed in Ghana on March 20 and remained for five days without any record of transporting a patient.

These allegations prompted President John Mahama to order security agencies to “immediately and fully collaborate with the honourable Member of Parliament so he provides all necessary information to investigate the allegations and take all action necessary to expose any drug dealing.”

Police seek to reassure South Africans over sexual abuse of seven-year-old girl

0

South Africa’s Police Minister Senzo Mchunu has tried to reassure people that a “thorough investigation” is now “fully under way” into the alleged sexual abuse of a seven-year-old girl that has sparked nationwide protests.

Outraged citizens have been calling for justice for Cwecwe – the pseudonym given to the child to protect her identity.

The case was first reported to the police six months ago, but a lack of progress in the investigation prompted Cwecwe’s frustrated mother to speak out on the matter.

South Africa has one of the highest rates of sexual violence in the world, with rape being the most reported crime against children.

Speaking at a briefing on Friday, Mchunu confirmed that the matter was first reported to police on 16 October last year.

A medical examination was then carried out, alongside an assessment by a social worker. But a month later prosecutors declined to take the matter forward “citing insufficient evidence as the reason” and based on what was in the police case file at the time.

Elaborating on the numerous challenges facing what he called a “complex case”, Mchunu said it had been handled by three different investigating officers, which led to a file that “could have been better prepared”. He also noted they had no witnesses to the alleged crime.

“One critical aspect which has continued to present a serious challenge is the matter around DNA. DNA testing was done on the victim as per procedure and the outcome was that no foreign DNA had been found,” the minister told reporters.

He did however, confirm that three people of interest have been identified and “further DNA testing is under way”.

The police stressed that none of these people were suspects at this point while they defended their handling of the case.

Mchunu confirmed that senior police officials had been assigned to the case.

“I can assure you that we are consulting with all relevant role players to ensure that every aspect of this matter is examined carefully and comprehensively,” he said.

The police declined to provide more details of the progress of the investigation, citing its sensitive nature.

Details of Cwecwe’s alleged sexual abuse first came to be widely known after her mother publicly shared details of the ordeal on numerous platforms.

In a wide-ranging interview last month with a local podcast, Hope Revolution, the mother of two said the alleged incident happened on 14 October, adding that it only came to the family’s attention two days later.

She said that on 14 October, Cwecwe returned home later than usual and while there was no suspicion of anything amiss at that point, her unusual behaviour over the following days raised concern.

First, her mother said she noticed Cwecwe’s unzipped school trousers, then the repeated complaints of an upset stomach and finally her difficulty in walking.

Later, her mother recalled, the family noticed blood stains on the tracksuit trousers she wore on the day of the incident.

When the little girl’s difficulty in walking persisted, her parents finally examined her, but “the idea of rape did not come to my mind”, her mother said.

Cwecwe was then taken to the doctor for a formal examination and the mother recalled her reaction when she was told of the alleged assault.

“I cried because I am also a victim of rape so I know how it feels,” she said.

According to the mother, little Cwecwe eventually opened up to her father on the events of the alleged incident.

She told him that while she and some schoolmates were waiting for the driver who transported them to and from school to arrive, the school’s caretaker allegedly told them to go and sweep a classroom.

This rigorous activity soon wore her out, she further said, and she lost track of events from that point on – all she recalled was the caretaker announcing the driver’s arrival.

Cwecwe would later tell her mother she remembered the smell of a “burning tyre” while she was in the classroom.

Cwecwe’s mother was angry with the school’s and police’s alleged poor handling of the matter. This included threats of legal action by the school’s principal in the aftermath.

AfriForum, an Afrikaner lobby group, has since announced it would be representing the school’s principal after he was linked to the case despite not being identified as a suspect by police.

The right-wing group’s private prosecution unit stepped in to assist the man after police asked for his DNA sample, which he refused to provide.

“I need answers, it cannot be that from October to [this] point, no one has been arrested, interrogated or had samples taken. What is going on?” Cwecwe’s frustrated mother asked in the hour-long interview.

Shaheda Omar, director of the Teddy Bear Foundation – which provides support to child abuse victims – said that the “undue delays and responses [in this case] are totally unacceptable”.

“The justice system is failing our children and we have to address these gaps and challenges in the structures that are failing our children,” she said.

Dr Omar also weighed in on the school principal’s refusal to provide a sample, saying that this was unacceptable and that the “right of a victim is to ensure that the case is explored to its fullest extent”.

GhNCDA, VAST-Ghana call for adequate investment in physical activity to prevent NCDs

The initiative is dedicated to raising awareness about the profound benefits of physical activity The initiative is dedicated to raising awareness about the profound benefits of physical activity

The Ghana NCD Alliance (GhNCDA) and the Vision for Accelerated Sustainable Development (VAST-Ghana) have called for adequate investment in physical activities to prevent noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) among the people.

This was in a solidarity message read by Labram Musah, the National Coordinator of GhNCDA, and the Executive Director of VAST-Ghana as they joined the Ministry of Health to commemorate the World Physical Day 2025 in Accra on Thursday.

This year’s Day was on the theme: “Have a Good Time! Be Active!” which emphasised the importance of physical activity to life.

The initiative is dedicated to raising awareness about the profound benefits of physical activity and to mobilise efforts to promote healthier lifestyles.

The event was jointly organised by the Ministry of Health and The New You (TNYOU) Fitness with the launch of “Ghana Walk 2025” as part of their 10th anniversary on the theme, “Active today, healthy tomorrow: Empowering Ghanaians through physical activity.”

Musah said, “Today’s event is directly connected to one of President Mahama’s commitment to a healthier Ghana by initiating the National Recreation Day.

“We believe it will encourage more keep-fit activities and promote active lifestyles, increase school level physical education, promote traditional games, and strengthen community bond.

“However, for this initiative to be impactful, it must be effectively implemented and sustained beyond political cycles with adequate investment.”

He encouraged organisations to integrate physical activity into their daily routine not only to enhance their physical health but also boost their mental wellbeing, reduce stress, and foster social connections and alertness.

“In addition to this, the staff should go for regular screening of blood pressure and diabetes test. This will help them from frequenting the hospital with sicknesses,” Musah stated.

He said the collaboration between the Ministry of Health and The New You (TNYOU) Fitness exemplifies the power of partnerships in advancing public health initiatives.

“By working together, we can create environments that encourage active living, making physical activity accessible, enjoyable, and sustainable for all,” he pointed out.

“As we mark World Physical Activity Day 2025, let us remember that being active is not just a personal choice but a collective responsibility. Let us embrace the joy of movement, support one another in our wellness journeys, and build a healthier Ghana for current and future generations,” Musah said.

Professor Emeritus Reginald Ocansey, Physical Activity and Sport Researcher at the University of Ghana, called on stakeholders to champion the cause of physical activity by spreading the message that movement is medicine and powerful in preventing diseases.

The sub-divisional chief of Mepe Gbavie-Dekume, Togbe Kwasi Amedor III, has expressed concern over a communicable skin disease outbreak affecting many children and adults in Avetakpo enclave, a farming community in Ghana’s Volta Region.

According to the chief, the infected residents are experiencing sleep deprivation, acute, and prolonged bodily pains.

Despite the severity of the outbreak, he indicated that affected individuals are unable to access medical treatment due to a lack of funds.

Based on the request by the Queen Mother of the area, Mama Aku Seme II, officials from the Ho East District Health Directorate of Ghana Health Service (GHS) visited the area, but a budget of GH₵ 6,642.50 was set for the community to pay before treatment could begin.

Unfortunately, the community couldn’t raise the funds.

“We are pleading with the government to come to our aid because we are not able to raise the total of GH₵ 6,642.50 estimated budget,” Chief Togbe Amedor III stated.

SKIN

He disclised that the disease has spread to neighboring communities, with over 46 people affected so far.

Togbe Amedor III is calling for immediate government intervention to support the community with funds for mass medical treatment.

He emphasized the need for contingency measures to prevent infections and maintain residents’ well-being.

The chief expressed frustration that health officials didn’t provide the actual name of the disease or its source, leaving the community uncertain about the situation.

SKIN

The lack of access to clean drinking water, with residents sharing sources with cattle and animals, may be contributing to the outbreak.

The chief’s appeal highlights the need for government support to address the skin disease outbreak in Mepe-Avetakpi.

With the situation becoming increasingly serious, urgent action is required to provide medical treatment and prevent further spread of the disease.
