Trials and tribulations have characterised my acting career – Gloria Sarfo

0

Gloria Sarfo is an actress Gloria Sarfo is an actress

Actress Gloria Sarfo has explained that her relevance in the movie industry is owed to her consistency with prayer.

She explains that she has had trials and tribulations, but her commitment to God has also been the light that has saved her over the years.

The actress made this known while speaking on spiritual attacks in the entertainment industry.

“I’ve been through trials, and people will be shocked when I talk about it. But you see, the good things are coming, so they outweigh the bad ones. Even the bad ones manifest so that the will of God will also come true.

“I was in Kumasi to film; I did about four films at a go. I prepared myself and went in, so after the first film, I had to quickly dash to Accra and go back. I got stuck in Accra. I got paralyzed, and so I had to call someone in Kumasi to bring my things. Even with Efiewura, people thought I was using juju because of the love I received from shooting that series. I prayed and also went to the hospital to ensure that I got well,” she said.

When a study showed 8.5m Ghanaians slept on empty stomachs, we had to do something – Kwakye Ofosu

Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Minister of State in Charge of Government Communications Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Minister of State in Charge of Government Communications

The Minister of State in charge of Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, has explained what inspired the NDC to pursue the rescue mission as propagated in their 2024 election campaign.

He made this remark on Pan African TV’s Talk Time, on April 12, 2025, while speaking about strides made by the John Dramani Mahama-led government in their first three months in power.

The MP for Abura-Asebu-Kwamankese noted that it became obvious in 2020 that the country was headed downhill, and hence they needed to rescue Ghanaians from what he termed as bad leadership of the NPP.

“It became obvious at a point, especially after the 2020 Election, that our country was headed towards a very slippery slope… Our economy was in total disarray; and arising out of that were severe hardships.

“Unemployment was going out of the roof, and indeed there was a report that I don’t know if you had seen, that the Ghana Statistical Service (GSS) did. In a particular year, I think 2023 or so, their research showed that up to 8.5million Ghanaians went to bed without food,” he claimed.

Kwakye Ofosu added that the exigencies of the time indicated that something drastic had to be done to reset the economy, which he described as being in shambles.

“Now, if you have a situation where a quarter of your population is starving, then you know that there can be no bigger indication of systemic failure than that. There was also corruption, and the abuse of office. You could see clearly the disrespect for the people that were governed… So, it became imperative that we change course.

“Now, if we’re going to change course, then there was the need to have an alternative to the existing one. So, the NDC, being the largest opposition party, who had been in and out of government a number of times, suddenly, was the most viable option at the time,” he said.

Ronaldo celebrating his goal Ronaldo celebrating his goal

A Cristiano Ronaldo brace inspired Al Nasr to a 2-1 comeback victory over Al Riyadh in the Saudi Pro League (SPL) on Saturday, April 12, 2025.

With Al Nasr looking to close the gap at the top of the table, the home side controlled the game from the start.

However, it was Faiz Selemani, from the visitors’ side, who broke the deadlock just on the stroke of half-time.

Despite the setback, Al Nasr returned from the break brimming with confidence in their quest for all three points.

Their pressure eventually paid off as Ronaldo equalised just ten minutes into the second half.

The goal marked the Portuguese star’s 22nd of the 2024/25 campaign, and nine minutes later, he added his 23rd with a moment of magic.

As Al Nasr desperately chased the win, Sadio Mané embarked on a mazy run down the left wing.

His cross was cleared into the path of Ronaldo, who unleashed a rocket into the top corner.

The brace solidifies Ronaldo’s position as the top scorer of the current season with 23 goals, four ahead of the second-placed Abderrazak Hamdallah.

The win propels Al Nasr to third place in the SPL standings, just one point behind second-placed Al-Hilal and eight points adrift of leaders Al-Ittihad.

The election, which drew support from 54 assembly members and government appointees, followed Kassim’s nomination by President John Dramani Mahama.

Kassim’s confirmation was met with celebrations from party faithful and key stakeholders who filled the assembly hall.

The event was attended by several dignitaries, including Hakeem Addae, Council of State Representative for the Central Region; Central Regional Minister, Ekow Panyin; Deputy Minister for Energy and Member of Parliament for Gomoa West, Richard Gyan-Mensah; and traditional authorities led by the Paramount Chief of the Gomoa Ajumako Traditional Council, Obrempong Nyanful Krampah XI.

Also present were the Central Regional President of the Ghana Bar Association, Adu Yeboah, former DCE Theophilus Adu-Mensah, NDC Central Region constituency chairmen, the DCE for Ekumfi, Ishmael Nana Asamoah, and several party executives.

In his acceptance speech, Mr. Kassim, a two term NDC Gomoa West constituency chairman, expressed gratitude for the confidence reposed in him and called for unity. “A district seeking development cannot succeed with a divisive front,” he said. “I will be a DCE for all.”

He pledged to begin broad consultations with stakeholders in the coming days, emphasizing that inclusive leadership and collective ideas are essential for the progress of the district.

Mahama launches Feed Ghana project; Encourages families and schools to grow their own food

0

President John Dramani Mahama has launched the Feed Ghana Programme, a national initiative aimed at boosting local food production, creating jobs, and reducing the country’s reliance on imported food.

The programme was officially introduced in Techiman, Bono East Region, on Saturday, April 12  2025.

Speaking at the event, Mr Mahama said the initiative, popularly referred to as Yeridua, is centred on practical farming approaches that involve households, schools, communities and institutions.

“We’ll invest in controlled environment farming, including greenhouse technology and urban agriculture,” he said. “But we’re also going back to the basics encouraging every household to grow what they can eat.”

Mr Mahama urged families to cultivate small backyard gardens. He said growing common vegetables such as tomatoes, onions, garden eggs and okra at home could help cut food costs while improving diets.

Recalling the “Operation Feed Yourself” campaign of the 1970s, he noted that backyard farming was once common and could be again.

“For those of you who grew up during the Operation Feed Yourself era, you remember how your parents had backyard gardens. So when it was time to pound fufu, there was no need to visit the market. You just stepped outside and picked some nyadua, pepper, onion and tomato to make the soup,” he said.

Beyond households, Mr Mahama said the programme would also involve Senior High Schools, particularly those with land. These schools, he noted, will be supported to grow food and rear animals to support their kitchens and supplement the school feeding programme.

“You’ll grow vegetables to improve the meals and raise cows, goats and sheep to provide meat for students,” he said. “We want students to begin to see agriculture not just as a subject in the classroom but as meaningful work they can take up.”

He added that the National Service Scheme, Ghana Prisons Service and National Youth Employment Agency would all take part in the rollout. Religious groups, he said, had also expressed interest in participating.

Another component of the programme is the revival of the national poultry initiative. Under this arrangement, 50 anchor farmers will receive support to produce four million birds, equivalent to about 10,000 metric tonnes of chicken. In addition, 55,000 households will each be helped to rear 500 birds annually.

“Ghana imports nearly 400 million dollars’ worth of chicken every year. That is something we should not be proud of,” Mr Mahama said. “This project is going to change that.”

To support these activities, the government plans to deploy 5,000 agricultural and veterinary graduates across the country.

Mr Mahama said they will be assigned to schools, communities and institutions, and will be absorbed into the public sector as job openings become available.

He also mentioned other parts of the programme, including grain, legume, vegetable and livestock farming projects.

Mr Mahama said the broader goal is to help the country return to a culture of self-reliance and build a stronger food system that works for everyone, from farmers in rural areas to families living in cities.

“This is about feeding ourselves again and making farming part of our everyday lives,” he said.

I will resign from NDC if Ntim Fordjour is not arrested next week – NDC communicator

0

Ibrahim Ali is an NDC communication team member Ibrahim Ali is an NDC communication team member

A communication team member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Ibrahim Ali, has issued a bold personal challenge, vowing to resign from the party if the government fails to arrest the Member of Parliament for Assin South, Rev John Ntim Fordjour, over alleged drug trafficking claims.

Speaking on Neat FM on April 11, 2025, Ibrahim Ali claimed that intelligence he has obtained from within the party and through National Security sources suggests that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member of Parliament will be arrested in the coming week.

He stressed that if the arrest and detention do not materialise, he will relinquish his position as a party communicator and resign from the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

“If we fail to invite, arrest and detain Ntim Fordjour within next week, I will resign as a member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) communications team. I’m repeating it that I, Ibrahim Ali, from what I know and the intelligence I’ve picked within our party and the National Security, if by the whole of next week, this man (Ntim Fordjour) is either not invited to the NIB or arrested and put behind cells, I will resign from the NDC,” he boldly declared.

Ibrahim, visibly frustrated by the ongoing controversy and the government’s entanglement in alleged drug trafficking claims, urged the authorities to employ all available means to apprehend Rev John Ntim Fordjour.

According to him, the arrest of the lawmaker would serve as a deterrent to others in Parliament who make serious allegations against the government without substantiating them with evidence.

“I know what I’m talking about. He is here tickling himself laughing. By hook or crook next week, any means or approach we will adopt to arrest him to teach him a lesson, we will do it. This should serve as a deterrent to other MPs who talk anyhow without any evidence,” he added.

Meanwhile, the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) officials on April 9, 2025, engaged in a standoff with the Ranking Member of Parliament’s Defence and Interior Committee, Rev Ntim Fordjour in an attempt to effect his arrest.

According to Government Spokesperson, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, the standoff erupted because Rev Fordjour refused to cooperate.

“NIB officials are currently at Ntim Fordjour’s residence. They have arrest warrant. He is refusing to cooperate. They have given him time to cooperate, failing which they will act,” he said.

Week 27 Match Preview – Asante Kotoko vs Bechem United

0

Kotoko have won 13, drawn 7, and lost 5 of their 25 matches this season Kotoko have won 13, drawn 7, and lost 5 of their 25 matches this season

Asante Kotoko will aim to extend their unbeaten run and strengthen their position at the top of the Ghana Premier League table when they host Bechem United at the Baba Yara Stadium in Kumasi on Sunday.

The Porcupine Warriors have been in strong form, securing vital wins in recent weeks to climb to the summit of the league. Their confidence is high, especially at home, where they have recorded 10 wins, one draw, and just two losses this season.

Bechem United, meanwhile, have struggled for consistency. They were awarded three points following Nsoatreman FC’s withdrawal from the league but haven’t won any of their last two matches played on the pitch. Now sitting 8th on the table and seven points behind Kotoko, Bechem will need a significant improvement to pose a challenge in Kumasi.

In their last six encounters since March 2022, Bechem United hold the upper hand, winning twice compared to Kotoko’s single victory, with three matches ending in draws. Bechem also won the reverse fixture 1-0 on November 10, 2024.

Statistically, Kotoko have won 13, drawn 7, and lost 5 of their 25 matches this season, scoring 27 goals and conceding 15—an average of 1.08 goals scored and 0.60 conceded per match. Bechem have 12 wins, 6 draws, and 7 losses, netting 26 goals and conceding 17—averaging 1.04 goals scored and 0.68 conceded per match.

Sunday’s clash offers Kotoko an opportunity to solidify their lead as the title race intensifies, while Bechem will be hoping to rekindle their top-four ambitions with a strong performance.

Sarkodie’s stylist expresses frustration over artistes throwing costumes during performances

0

Fashion stylist and creative director Trendy Rail has voiced her concerns over a trend in the music and entertainment industry that many in the styling profession find disheartening and financially straining.

Trendy Rail bemoaned the practice of artistes tossing costumes into crowds during performances.

Speaking on The Chat on Channel One TV on Saturday, April 12, hosted by Ekow Koomson, Trendy Rail shed light on what she described as upsetting and affecting stylists who work behind the scenes to help shape the image of some of the biggest names in the music world.

While it may appear like a fun and generous gesture to fans, Trendy Rail said that the throwing of costumes comes at a significant cost—both literally and professionally—to the stylists who work tirelessly to curate those looks.

Trendy Rail cited an incident involving Sarkodie during his 2022 Rapperholic concert, where the artiste, in the middle of a high-energy performance, removed a red designer jacket and hurled it into the enthusiastic crowd.

According to Trendy Rail, the jacket was worth £3,000 to £4,000, and its loss was a painful blow, especially considering the effort that went into selecting it.

“Some of these clothes are very expensive. If custom-made, they can cost between £8,000 and £10,000 but it is the artistes’ daily lives, and they don’t see anything wrong with the throwing of costumes, but for a stylist like me, I get upset.

“Sarkodie had this red jacket during the 2022 Rapperholic concert, he took off the jacket and threw it in the crowd and I kid you not, that jacket was probably £3,000 or £4,000.”

Known for her flair, eye for detail, and innovative styling concepts, Trendy Rail has built a reputable name across the continent, having worked with top-tier acts like Sarkodie, Burna Boy, Wande Coal, and Kidi.

She has also styled respected public figures such as media personality and entrepreneur Anita Erskine.

The irony in the fight for proper Sanitation and a Green Kumasi -Bright Yeboah writes

0

Kumasi, the second most industrialized city in Ghana after Accra, was once celebrated as the Garden City. However, for decades, it has been engulfed in filth. Sanitation and waste management remain persistent challenges that require urgent and sustained intervention.

In 2021, the Government of Ghana secured US$74 million from the World Bank to improve water and sanitation services nationwide. Part of this funding was earmarked for the Greater Kumasi Sanitation and Water Project, which aimed to provide 30,000 household toilet facilities for low-income residents in the Greater Kumasi Metropolitan Area.

Former Sanitation and Water Resources Minister Cecilia Abena Dapaah, made that announcement during the World Toilet Day celebrations in Kumasi on November 21, 2021.

In 2022, Kumasi also received 2.5 million euros in support from the European Union through the Holistic Reinforcement for Sustainable Development initiative, a 30-month project that was launched to improve the city’s sanitation. At the launch, the former Ashanti Regional Minister, Simon Osei Mensah, noted that sanitation had become the second most pressing issue in the region, after roads.

“When the president gave me the opportunity to represent him in the Ashanti region, I did a survey to identify the top challenges of the region and among the first three was sanitation. The first was roads, the second was security, and the third was sanitation. But as I speak, sanitation has moved to second after roads,”  he stated.

Year after year and administration after administration, the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly has initiated and launched various programmes geared towards making Kumasi clean and green. Yet, these initiatives are yet to reflect on the streets of the city.

The latest to join the fight against the sanitation crisis in the region is the new Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr. Frank Amoakohene.

In just one month, Ashanti Regional Minister Dr. Frank Amoakohene has twice pledged to address the region’s mounting sanitation challenges, raising public expectations for swift and tangible action.

On March 6, 2025, while speaking to the media during a cleanup exercise as part of Ghana’s 68th Independence Day celebrations, Dr. Amoakohene announced that a proposal to penalise sanitation offenders was under consideration.

He further hinted at deploying sanitation officers—graduates from the School of Hygiene—as compliance enforcers, particularly within the Central Business District, to ensure adherence to sanitation regulations.

“There is equally a selection on my table concerning the deployment of sanitation officers… You litter, you pay. We can even generate funds from there,” he said.

He acknowledged possible concerns about leakages and misuse of such levies but stressed the need for collective commitment to restore Kumasi’s image as the Garden City.

“Once we put our heads together… with that unity of purpose we should be able to achieve same.”

A little over a month later, what became of that proposal? Was it tabled, shelved, or simply forgotten?

Fast forward to April 12, 2025, and Dr. Amoakohene is back in the headlines during a regional Sanitation Day exercise, this time revealing a different tactic: the use of CCTV cameras to monitor and catch those dumping refuse at unauthorised locations.

“We have redirected some of our cameras from the signals department to capture images and footage from these areas,” he said. “Anyone caught… will be dealt with.”

This pivot raises questions about follow-through on his earlier proposal. With no updates on the deployment of sanitation officers or penalties for offenders, the public is left wondering whether these initiatives are mere rhetoric or part of a cohesive, long-term plan.

The region’s sanitation woes, particularly in areas like Adum, Asafo, Roman Hill, and Kejetia, are glaring. Indiscriminate dumping and littering remain rampant, especially in the central business district.

Clearly, the solution lies not just in promises, isolated campaigns, or the launch of initiatives and programmes but in sustained discipline, enforcement of sanitation laws, and transparent policy implementation.

Until then, the fight against poor sanitation in the Ashanti Region remains a revolving door of pledges and the launch of initiatives and programmes, without progress.

Watch Thomas Partey’s brilliant strike against Brentford

Partey celebrating his goal against Brentford Partey celebrating his goal against Brentford

Thomas Partey scored his fourth goal of the 2024/25 Premier League season with a well-taken shot to put Arsenal 1-0 ahead against Brentford.

With a crucial second-leg tie against Real Madrid on the horizon, Arteta made significant changes to his team.

However, Partey retained his spot, playing as a right-back.

These changes resulted in a sluggish start to the game, with little quality on display.

It wasn’t until the 20th minute that the first shot on target arrived, with Kristoffer Ajer testing David Raya after being slipped into the box by Bryan Mbeumo.

Just after the hour mark, however, Partey capped off a swift counter-attack that started with David Raya rolling the ball to Declan Rice.

Rice surged forward from deep before setting up Partey, who smashed in the opener.

The midfielder has now contributed to six goals in 30 Premier League games this season, scoring four and providing two assists.

He is also on course to equal his best scoring season, having netted five league goals while at Mallorca during the 2013/14 campaign.

Claims that Bawumia cannot be president in Ghana laughable – Kofi Ofosu Nkansah

Former Chief Executive Officer for The National Entrepreneurship & Innovation Programme (NEIP), Kofi Ofosu Nkansah, has described as laughable claims that Dr Mahamudu Bawumia can never be president.

He says over the years, people have chosen not to learn from what some elements within the political party did to Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

60th UAJ Training for Young Journalists opens with a strong call for ceasefire in Gaza

0

The 60th anniversary training of the Union of African Journalists (UAJ) opened in Cairo with a forceful appeal for a ceasefire in Gaza, setting a bold tone for a gathering of young journalists from across the African continent.

Delivering the keynote address, Ambassador Ahmed Haggag, a long-time UAJ member and former African Union official, condemned the ongoing killing of journalists in Palestine and urged African journalists to take a united stand.

Ambassador Ahmed Haggag – Member, Union of African Journalists & Secretary-General of Africa Society

“To date, more than 100 journalists in Palestine have been killed in cold blood. These journalists were not only killed in the line of duty, but some were killed alongside their children, some even in front of their families. What is happening in Gaza must be condemned. We must take a stand,” Ambassador Haggag said.

He highlighted that Israel now ranks second globally in the number of journalists killed, according to the International Federation of Journalists in Brussels, most of them being Palestinian. Ambassador Haggag stressed that except for Palestinian journalists, no international media is reporting from inside Gaza.

Africa’s Longstanding Solidarity with Palestine

The opening session reaffirmed the African Union’s historic support for Palestine, with Ambassador Haggag noting that the issue has always been first on the agenda of AU summits. He commended South Africa for initiating a legal case against Israel at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) over alleged genocide in Gaza and the West Bank.

He also pointed to the backlash African countries face for such stances. “Various groups that support Israel have imposed sanctions on South Africa and others, simply for speaking out,” he said.

In line with this solidarity, participants in the UAJ training will have the opportunity to interact with the Ambassador of Palestine to Egypt, as the programme explores African media’s role in global justice movements.

A Pan-African Training Ground for the Next Generation

The three-week-long training marks 60 years of continuous journalist development by the UAJ. It brings together young journalists from across the continent, including JoyNews’ Emmanuel Dzivenu, to explore topics that blend traditional journalistic values with emerging storytelling techniques.

The curriculum includes sessions on:

  • Economic integration and free labour organisation in Africa
  • Soft power and the African identity
  • Protection of African journalists in hostile environments
  • Creating compelling digital content, especially short-form reels for social media
  • Cross-border collaboration and news exchange

Ambassador Haggag reflected on his efforts as Egypt’s ambassador to Kenya and Ethiopia to strengthen media collaboration between East Africa and North Africa. He encouraged current participants to build new networks across borders:

“We ensured that Egyptian newspapers would publish weekly columns about African news, and Kenyan papers like The Nation would carry columns on Arab affairs. This is the kind of collaboration we must revive.”

Ghana’s Voice on the Gaza Conflict

Ghana, like many African countries, has called for restraint in the Middle East. In 2024, then President of Ghana, Nana Akufo-Addo expressed concern over the humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza, urging both sides to respect international law and protect civilians. He has reiterated Ghana’s support for a two-state solution.

Addressing the United Nations General Assembly in 2015, President Mahama said: “Ghana supports a two state solution to the conflict. A peaceful and stable Israel, coexisting with a sovereign Palestinian State. To this end we call for an immediate cessation of construction of settlements in the Palestinian territories.”

Bridging African and Arab Narratives

In closing, Ambassador Haggag urged Egyptian journalists to connect more deeply with their African counterparts and vice versa. “You must collaborate,” he said, emphasizing that the future of African journalism depends on shared stories, shared struggles, and shared solutions.

The UAJ has also arranged cultural activities and sightseeing for participants to explore Egypt’s rich historical sites during the training.

As the war in Gaza continues to test the world’s conscience, the UAJ’s 60th anniversary training has become more than a skills workshop – it is a platform where Africa’s youngest journalists are being encouraged to find their voice on the frontlines of truth, justice, and global solidarity.

NPP will continue to suffer if ‘demons’ in leadership positions are not removed – Prof Frimpong-Boateng

Former Minister of Environment, Science, and Technology, Professor Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng Former Minister of Environment, Science, and Technology, Professor Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng

A former Minister of Environment, Science, and Technology, Professor Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng, has called for a mass resignation of the leadership of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) for their roles in the defeat suffered by the party in the 2024 general elections.

Speaking in an interview on Nhyira FM, the former minister called for an exorcism of the party from what he described as demons occupying leadership positions.

“All the executives must resign for leading the party to an unprecedented defeat; if the demons in the NPP are not removed from their leadership positions, the party will continue to suffer,” he stated.

He expressed disappointment in the governance of Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, describing the former president as ‘unreceptive and close-minded.’

“Akufo-Addo turned a deaf ear to the many pieces of advice I gave him, which could have turned the fortunes around. His governance was so disappointing. There are so many people behind the scenes in the NPP who love this country and could perform better but were sidelined by President Akufo-Addo,” he observed.

The NPP suffered a significant defeat to the then-opposition, National Democratic Congress (NDC), in the 2024 election.

The NDC’s candidate, John Mahama, won the presidency with 56.55% of the vote, while the NPP’s then-Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia secured 41.61%.

The NDC also gained a two-thirds majority in Parliament, winning 183 of 276 seats, compared to the NPP’s 88.

While the NPP remains in the process of reorganising after the defeat, there have been criticisms directed at key figures of the former government and party leaders for contributing to the loss.

Ntim Fordjour’s allegations were a failed April fool’s attempt – Col Aboagye

0

Security expert Col Festus Aboagye (rtd) Security expert Col Festus Aboagye (rtd)

A security analyst, Col Festus Aboagye (rtd), has described NPP’s Rev John Ntim Fordjour’s allegations as lacking substance and a ploy to sway Ghanaians.

He labelled the sequence of events that have characterised the allegations as a failed “April Fool’s” attempt.

Col Aboagye explained that it is cunning to set such an agenda without a correct factual basis and evidence.

Speaking on TV3’s Key Points show on April 12, 2025, he said; “And I’m saying that if this is the caliber of people who govern Ghana, then we are doomed because you don’t eat ‘abenkwan’ [palm nut soup] and go to bed and dream and wake up and tell Ghanaians that you have intelligence that some drugs have been trafficked into the country or money has been laundered. So, that is a broad picture.”

The security analyst also tackled how the government has been responding to the issue.

He lamented the lack of transparency and proactiveness of the various institutions whose mandate is to deal with such a matter, i.e the police, the Financial Intelligence Centre, EOCO, and the Narcotics Control Commission.

“And up until today, the government has been reacting to an April Fool’s agenda that has been set by the Reverend Ntim Fodjour, which is very unfortunate once again because our political culture is not brief. It’s not to update, it’s not to inform. We keep things until we are forced, then we come and chip in something.

“But assuming that there is intelligence, I would wish, based on what I see in the media, you have a regional minister or you have a Minister of State, you have an IGP or you have a police CID boss. You have the chief or the head of Narcotics Control Commission lined up before the press. The politician will issue a political statement,” he said.

He added, “The police will come in with the criminal investigation aspects. The narcotics control will pitch in with the narcotics side. The Financial Intelligence Center or EOCO will come in with the money laundering side.”

On April 1, 2025, the Member of Parliament for Assin South, Rev John Ntim Fordjour, said the Minority caucus intercepted an intelligence indicating that an air ambulance landed in Ghana without any referral of patients.

According to them, two flights suspected to be carrying cocaine and an undisclosed amount of cash landed in Ghana between March 20 and March 25, 2025.

One student linked to alleged robbery incident, attack on taxi driver

0

Raphael Appiah Owusu has been declared persona non grata by KNUST Raphael Appiah Owusu has been declared persona non grata by KNUST

The public declaration of Raphael Appiah Owusu, a former student of Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), as persona non grata — following his involvement in violent incidents within the university halls despite his dismissal in the 2023/2024 academic year for poor academic performance — has opened a can of worms concerning his past conducts and activities.

Following the university’s announcement, which has since gone viral on social media, particularly on X, several netizens, believed to be former secondary school colleagues of Appiah Owusu, have linked him to a robbery incident that occurred in 2022.

The 2022 incident, which received widespread media coverage, alleged that three final-year students of Opoku Ware School (OWASS); Raphael Appiah Owusu, Akwasi Adu Donkor, and Osei Kwadwo Asubonteng, were involved in the attack and robbery of a taxi driver in Kumasi, located in the Ashanti Region.

Additional information disclosed that the trio were de-boardinised by OWASS for “terrorising fellow students on campus and also breaching some school rules and regulations.”

According to police reports, on Thursday, August 11, 2022, the three students convened in the Santasi area of Kumasi to plan a series of robberies.

Investigations further revealed that prior to attacking the taxi driver, the trio had allegedly robbed seven students of St Hubert Seminary Senior High School, also located in Santasi.

Prosecution stated that the victim, Akwasi Mohammed, a commercial taxi driver at Pekyi, was allegedly robbed by the students after they hired his services, starting from Santasi roundabout.

The students informed the driver to transport them to the Golden Tulip Hotel, which he reportedly did but upon arrival however, Raphael Appiah Owusu and his friends allegedly asked the driver to rather proceed to Rattray Park where they began the attack on him.

The driver was stabbed in the neck, police report said, and was beaten and dragged to the back seat of his car while struggling with his attackers.

One of the accused took over the wheel of the car, and in the process stole an amount of GH¢150 from the driver.

On reaching Ahodwo, the student, who was driving the vehicle at the time, lost control, hit a wall, and damaged the car.

Following a crash involving the vehicle, two of the students attempted to flee the scene. However, the injured driver managed to alert nearby individuals, leading to the immediate arrest of two of the suspects.

The third was subsequently apprehended later.

They were charged with conspiracy to commit robbery, robbery, and unlawful damage and granted bail of GH¢80,000 bail with five sureties each.

Statement from OWASS in 2022

In 2022, when the incident happened, the school authorities of OWASS released a statement, shared by dailyguidenetwork.com, distancing itself from the students, indicating that in the case of Raphael Appiah Owusu, he was withdrawn from the boarding house over robbery.

Parts of the statement signed by the Secretary of the Disciplinary Committee, Agyemang Duah Bismark, read; “Owusu Appiah Raphael was also withdrawn from the boarding house for stealing on countless occasions from his colleagues at the dormitory. After this incident, he and the other four students appeared before D.C. for wrongful entry into someone’s house at TUC. He has also been hiding in the dormitory despite his withdrawal from the boarding house.

“The day before his arrest, he was brought to D.C. for stealing tins of sardines at the dining hall and causing mayhem during supper time even though he was a day student and did not have the right to eat supper at the school.”

It added, “It is sad to report that the father of Raphael Owusu Appiah insulted the then Assistant headmaster, Mr Akwasi Oduro Boateng, and nearly fought him. He claimed the Assistant headmaster hated his son and wanted him to be withdrawn from the school.”

‘We are going to Madrid to win’

Thomas Partey was instrumental in Arsenal's thumping of Madrid in the first leg Thomas Partey was instrumental in Arsenal’s thumping of Madrid in the first leg

Ghana midfielder Thomas Partey has shifted his focus to the second leg of the UEFA Champions League quarter-final match against Real Madrid.

Arsenal travel to Spain with a strong 3-0 win from the first leg in London.

The Black Stars midfielder will also be returning to the city where he spent most of his career playing for Real’s rivals, Atletico Madrid.

Partey excelled in the first leg in London and continued his fine form with a goal against Brentford in the Premier League on Saturday.

Ahead of the trip to Spain, Partey remains confident of Arsenal’s chances against the European champions.

“I think we’ve experienced this many times when we play here, and I think it’s not going to be something different,” he said.

“We just have to be confident with the ball and try to play our game.

“We all know what we have to do. We have to go there with the mentality to win. We want to win every game. And I think we have to play our game, be confident with the ball, and also try to find their weaknesses and keep attacking them.”

European country with world’s ‘tallest women’ where girls struggle to find a partner

Latvia has a large disproportion between men and women (Image: Getty)

Women in a small European country are being left struggling to find a partner due to the disproportion between males and females in the population. It has a ratio of 100 women to 84 men, meaning that romantic options are limited for some females.

According to the World Bank, Latvia had a female population of 53.68% in 2023 which puts it behind only Moldova (53.98%) among the countries with the highest percentage of women. Meanwhile, in the capital city Riga, women make up 55.7% of the total population. Sociologist Baba Bela said the imbalance has led to many Latvian women fearing they may be alone forever due to the lack of men in the country. She said in an interview with the BBC that Latvia has “the greatest disproportion between men and women,” with an alarming figure: “For every 84 men, there are 100 women.”

As well as the population disproportion, there is also a gap in life expectancy between genders in Latvia. Data from the country’s official statistics portal shows that, in 2022, men’s life expectancy in Latvia was 70.1, while women’s was 79.9 – a massive gap of 9.8 years.

Male mortality rates, especially among 30 to 40 year olds, is also higher in the country due to traffic crashes, workplace accidents and alcoholism. Baba Bela added that male mortality is “three times higher than that of women” in the same age range, highlighting the severity of gender imbalance in Latvia.

Dana Lucía, an influencer with over a million subscribers on YouTube, recently said that “there are 16 women left without anyone” in Latvia. This sparked a debate about the reasons behind the gender disproportion.

Latvia’s history plays an import role in the imbalance, with the country suffering a significant loss of its male population during World War Two. Meanwhile, men have also emigrated to other countries over the years seeking better job and life opportunities.

Women in Latvia are taller than most countries (Image: Getty)

It’s also reported that young and intelligent women generally find it harder to form stable relationships in Latvia. Dace, a young Latvian, told the BBC that “smarter women are alone. Really beautiful girls are alone… if they are intelligent.”

Another interesting factor about Latvian social life is that their women are among the tallest in the world. According to data from El Confidencial, women in Latvia have an average height of 1.7m. In comparison, this number is 1.6m in the UK.

This can be a barrier for relationships and has contributed to the belief that Latvian women face challenges to find romance.

Meanwhile, a larger proportion of higher education students in Latvia are women. During the 2022-23 academic year, over 60% of enrolments were female which reflects the gap in gender intelligence and job opportunities.

The time has come for bold, decisive actions – Mahama says as he launches Feed Ghana initiative

0

President Mahama has reaffirmed the commitment of his government to drop food imports, particularly, poultry products through his ‘Nkuko Nkitinkiti’ as part of the Feed Ghana agenda.

Speaking at the launch of the Feed Ghana initiative in Techiman of the Bono East region, the President hinted that over 50 anchor farmers will be registered this year.

He added that they will be supported to produce four million birds for the commencement of the project targeted at 55,000 households.

“Mr. Chairman, the time has come for bold and decisive actions. We must no longer treat agriculture as an afterthought. Agriculture must be placed at the center of our national economic transformation,” he stated.

He explained that the Feed Ghana Programme forms the foundation of a larger strategy dubbed the Agriculture for Economic Transformation Agenda (AETA).

The Feed Ghana initiative is expected to increase food production, drop imports, make Ghana a net exporter of key produce, ensure long-term food securityand make farming attractive.

Mahama expressed confidence that the initiative which will be championed by the Ministry of Food and Agriculture will rope in unemployed youth, boost skills and make the country self sufficient.

Emphasising the need for proper investment and skills development for the poultry industry, he added that government will invest in controlled environmental farming, and use greenhouse farming to drastically reduce food crop import.

Mr. Mahama stressed that the Feed Ghana Programme is not only timely but also a demonstration of his government’s intent to invest in the country’s agricultural potential.

“It represents a bold commitment to put our resources where our ambitions lie,” he noted.

He encouraged schools, security forces, ordinary citizens to grow or do backyard farming.

This initiative which is not new is to reintroduce the ‘Operation Feed Yourself’ movement back into the Ghanaian society; but, it will be done with extreme government support and investments.

President Mahama also said, institutional farming will also be introduced to crop production and livestock farming.

Policymakers urged to simplify economic terms for clarity

John Awuah is the President of the Ghana Association of Bankers John Awuah is the President of the Ghana Association of Bankers

John Awuah, President of the Ghana Association of Bankers, has urged policymakers to use clear and simple language when communicating national economic policies to ensure public understanding.

He noted that complex economic terminology often alienates citizens, limiting informed financial decisions.

Speaking at a financial literacy conference in Accra, Mr Awuah stressed the need for holistic financial education to drive Ghana’s economic transformation.

The conference highlighted the crucial role of rounded financial education in driving Ghana’s economic transformation, bringing together industry leaders and key stakeholders.

It was on the theme, “Building Wealth, Changing Lives, Strengthening Communities through Personal and Financial Education.”

Mr. Awuah emphasized that wealth creation depended not only on personal savings and investments but also on broader economic conditions such as inflation, exchange rates, and fiscal policies.

“The recent domestic debt exchange programme was a stark reminder that even prudent personal financial management can be undermined by macroeconomic instability,” he said.

Many Ghanaians, he noted, struggled to understand how such policies affect their lives due to technical jargon.

“When people understand how inflation erodes their savings or how exchange rate fluctuations impact prices, they can make better financial choices,” he added.

Mr. Awuah also advocated for public education, urging government officials and economic managers to simplify complex concepts into relatable terms.

He underscored the significance of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in advancing financial literacy, noting its potential to provide tailored advice and close knowledge gaps, particularly for underserved populations.

However, he cautioned that technology must be supported by clear and effective policy communication.

Awuah called for greater collaboration between financial institutions, educators, and policymakers to promote economic literacy.

“Financial empowerment begins with understanding. If we want a society where wealth is sustainable and inclusive, we must ensure that macroeconomic policies are accessible to everyone, not just experts,” he stated.

‘Feed Ghana’ will be research-driven, climate-sensitive

0

President John Dramani Mahama has reiterated his commitment to transforming Ghana’s agricultural sector through the newly launched Feed Ghana Programme, describing it as a national call to action.

Speaking at the official launch of the programme in Techiman on Saturday, April 12, President Mahama stressed that the initiative would be guided by research, inclusivity, and climate-conscious implementation.

“All interventions will be grounded in research, tailored to our climate realities, and inclusive of youth and women participation,” he said.

He emphasized that the Feed Ghana Programme  is more than a government policy—it represents a comprehensive strategy to drive national growth and improve the livelihoods of citizens through sustainable agriculture.

“Nana Chairman, Nananom, in conclusion, the Feed Ghana Programme is not just a policy. It is a call to action. The task ahead is monumental, but it is achievable,” Mr. Mahama declared.

Calling for collective effort, he urged all stakeholders—farmers, agribusinesses, financial institutions, development partners, and citizens—to work together in turning the vision into reality.

“With unity of purpose and shared commitment, we can transform agriculture into an engine of national growth and shared prosperity,” he added.

National Service Authority Staff Union condemns ‘political interference’ in internal operations

0

The Staff Union of the National Service Authority (NSA), under the National Service Authority Staff Union (NASASU), has condemned what it describes as attempts by political party foot soldiers to hijack the operations of the Authority.

In a press release dated April 11, 2025, and signed by NASASU Chairman, Ayirebi Adubofour, the Union expressed concern over growing political interference in the Authority’s internal affairs, particularly regarding staff recruitment and transfers.

The Union warned that such interference undermines democratic principles, erodes public trust, and compromises the integrity of state institutions.

“We strongly condemn the practice of political party foot soldiers attempting to hijack the National Service Authority. This phenomenon undermines the principle of democracy, erodes public trust, and compromises the integrity of our institutions,” the release stated.

The Union reiterated that all recruitment and internal transfers are governed by the National Service Authority Act 2024 (Act 1119), the Public Services Commission Act 1994 (Act 482), and Article 195 of the 1992 Constitution.

NASASU urged the youth of the Western Region, where tensions have reportedly arisen, to exercise restraint and allow the Management of the Authority to function within the confines of the law. It also called on the NSA Management to strictly adhere to the guiding legal and institutional frameworks and maintain the integrity of the Authority.

Additionally, NASASU appealed to the government to shield public institutions such as the National Service Authority from undue political influence and advised political parties to refrain from using the Authority as a tool for partisan gains.

The Union’s statement concludes by asserting that the Authority’s mandate must remain independent and professional, urging all stakeholders to respect its legal status and statutory responsibilities.

China and EU strengthen economic ties amid global trade uncertainties

0

Chinese President Xi Jinping has reaffirmed China’s commitment to strengthening economic ties with the European Union (EU) amid global trade uncertainties.

“Both China and the EU are major economies in the world and staunch supporters of economic globalisation and free trade,” he stated, stressing the importance of collaboration to protect the international trade environment and oppose unilateral, coercive actions.

President Xi, during a meeting in Beijing with Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, highlighted the strong economic relationship between China and the EU, noting their combined economic output exceeded one-third of the global total.

“The two sides have already formed a strong economic symbiotic relationship,” he said.

Xi reiterated China’s support for the EU’s unity, development, and growth.

“In the current context, it is of great practical significance to strengthen the China-EU partnerships of peace, growth, reform, and civilisation. China and the EU should see each other as partners and embrace open cooperation,” he added.

The meeting occurred against the backdrop of rising tensions in global trade, following the United States’ tariff policies under President Donald Trump’s administration.

The White House recently announced a 10 per cent tariff on imports from all foreign countries, prompting retaliatory measures from China and the EU.

President Trump defended the policy as a move to bolster the US manufacturing and industrial base.

In response, the Chinese Government stated: “As the second largest economy and second largest market for consumer goods, China is committed to opening ever wider to the world, no matter how the international situation changes.”

President Xi remarked in the meeting with Prime Minister Sanchez, “There are no winners in tariff wars. Going against the world will only lead to self-isolation.”

On China-Spain relations, President Xi stressed the importance of mutual support and respect, particularly on issues of sovereignty and territorial integrity.

Prime Minister Sánchez acknowledged the steady growth of China-Spain ties over the past 20 years and praised China’s contributions to global prosperity and stability.

“Spain values its relationship with China, and firmly upholds the one-China policy,” he said.

Prime Minister Sánchez expressed Spain’s readiness to deepen cooperation with China in trade, investment, innovation, green energy, education, culture, and tourism.

“The Spanish side stands ready to maintain high-level exchanges with China, deepen mutually beneficial cooperation in trade, investment, scientific and technological innovation, green energy and other sectors, and strengthen exchanges in education, culture, and tourism to elevate bilateral relations to new heights,” he assured.

The two leaders also discussed the Ukraine crisis during their meeting.

NPP using AirMed scandal to divert public attention from its wrongdoings

Executive Director of ASEPA, Mensah Thompson Executive Director of ASEPA, Mensah Thompson

Executive Director of the Alliance for Social Equity and Public Accountability (ASEPA), Mensah Thompson, has castigated Assin South lawmaker and Minority’s Ranking Member on the Defence and Interior Committee in Parliament, John Ntim Fordjour, over his alleged exposé involving two flights that arrived in Ghana under suspicious circumstances.

Rev. Ntim Fordjour alleged that the aircraft, AirMed flight N823AM and Cavok Air’s Antonov An-12B, a cargo plane, which arrived at Kotoka International Airport in March this year, may have been used to smuggle cocaine.

In response to these allegations, some armed personnel clad in NIB uniforms and wearing masks besieged Ntim Fordjour’s residence in an attempt to arrest him.

However, they failed to arrest the Member of Parliament as his party, the New Patriotic Party’s leadership and Minority Caucus, led by Alexander Afenyo-Markin, swarmed into the residence to show solidarity with their leading member.

Reacting to the incident, Mensah Thompson found Ntim Fordjour’s attitude and the posture of the Minority very unacceptable.

He questioned the logic behind Ntim Fordjour making his allegations in public, while he is a Ranking Member of Parliament’s Defence and Interior Committee who, according to Mensah Thompson, could have summoned the relevant security stakeholders before Parliament to explain the mission of the aircraft in Ghana.

“If truly it is not unnecessary allegations and cover-up and trying to change public discourse in this matter or public narrative, and truly, truly, they are interested in getting closure on this matter…Ntim Fordjour could have, through the committee,…summoned the National Security Minister, could have summoned the Minister for Defence, could have summoned the MD of Ghana Airport Company to come and tell them (Parliament) what those flights came to do in Ghana,” he said.

He blasted the lawmaker and the opposition New Patriotic Party, stressing that what has become widely known as the AirMed cocaine scandal is merely a “deliberate ploy” by the Minority “to take the nation’s attention from their crimes while in government that are now coming up.”

Thomas Partey doubtful for UCL second-leg clash against Real Madrid

Thomas Partey is a midfielder of Arsenal Thomas Partey is a midfielder of Arsenal

Arsenal midfielder, Thomas Partey, is a major doubt for the second leg of their UEFA Champions League quarter-final against Real Madrid.

The Ghanaian international, who has struggled with injuries, was once again forced off during the Gunners’ 1-1 draw against Brentford at the Emirates Stadium on Saturday, April 12, 2025.

Partey opened the scoring for Arsenal in the match but was substituted with just over twenty minutes remaining.

Many believed the substitution was a decision by Arteta to rest him ahead of the upcoming clash against Real Madrid.

However, after the game, Arteta confirmed that Partey had picked up a knock and decided not to take any risks regarding his fitness.

“We didn’t expect the issue with Thomas that led to his substitution. He felt something, so we didn’t want to take any risks. We don’t know the diagnosis yet — I haven’t spoken to the doctors. They will check him now and assess his condition,” Arteta stated.

Arsenal heads into the second leg of their Champions League quarter-final with a 3-0 advantage, having thrashed Real Madrid on Tuesday, April 8, 2025.

Despite this strong position, the Gunners looked far from their best on Saturday, as Yoane Wissa scored in the 74th minute to equalize after Partey’s opener.

The draw leaves Arsenal 10 points behind league leaders Liverpool, who have the chance to extend their lead to 13 points with a win against West Ham on Sunday, April 13, 2025.

Office fashion has evolved dramatically in recent years, with modern workplaces embracing more relaxed dress codes while still maintaining a sense of professionalism. The latest office fashion trends reflect a balance between comfort, style, and sophistication, ensuring that employees feel confident and productive throughout the workday. Whether you work in a corporate environment or a creative industry, here are some of the latest office fashion inspirations to keep you looking sharp and stylish.

The smart-casual look continues to dominate office fashion, allowing employees to mix professional attire with more casual elements. For women, tailored trousers paired with a fitted blouse or a knit top creates a chic yet comfortable look. Men can opt for a well-fitted blazer with a casual shirt and chinos. This trend helps bridge the gap between business formal and casual attire, making it perfect for today’s dynamic work environments.

Loose, relaxed fits are increasingly popular in office fashion. Oversized blazers, wide-leg trousers, and flowy skirts offer a more comfortable yet stylish alternative to traditional office wear. Pairing these pieces with a fitted shirt or turtleneck creates a balanced, polished look without sacrificing comfort. Additionally, tailored clothing remains essential for maintaining a professional image while accommodating movement and ease.

Eco-friendly and sustainable materials are gaining traction in the workplace. Fabrics like organic cotton, linen, and recycled polyester are being used in office clothing collections. Not only are these materials environmentally friendly, but they also offer a breathable and lightweight option for long office hours, ensuring comfort throughout the day.

Accessories are an excellent way to add personality to an office outfit without compromising professionalism. Bold necklaces, scarves, and minimalist watches can elevate a simple outfit, making it more fashionable. Shoes are another area where individuals can express their personal style—sustainable leather shoes or classic loafers are versatile choices that can complement almost any office look.

Neutral and monochromatic color schemes remain a favorite in office fashion. Shades of beige, navy, gray, and black provide a sleek, timeless look. Mixing different textures in the same color palette adds depth and interest, ensuring the outfit remains visually appealing without being too busy. For those looking to make a subtle statement, monochrome outfits are a simple yet effective way to achieve a high-fashion vibe.

In conclusion, the latest office fashion inspirations are all about combining comfort with style. The shift towards more relaxed, sustainable, and versatile office attire allows individuals to express their unique personality while maintaining a professional image. Whether you’re dressing for a corporate meeting or a creative brainstorming session, these trends offer plenty of options to stay stylish and comfortable at work.

A young guy from Korle Gono in Accra who goes by Kojo was given a one-week jail sentence after a horrific video of him assaulting his wife while she clutched their 8-month-old child went viral.

Ghanaians took to social media to rapidly express their interest in the Thursday occurrence. Kojo can be seen violently striking his wife in the footage as she cries for assistance and holds their infant in her arms. Many people are astonished and saddened by the court’s decision to sentence Kojo to one week in jail, which was made just two days later on Saturday, April 12.

Reactions on social media have been overwhelmingly positive, with many Ghanaians claiming that the penalty is excessively light. “How is it possible for someone to beat a pregnant woman and only receive one week? Amina, a Korle Gono market woman, remarked, “This is unbelievable.” “Instead of providing justifications for abusers, we ought to be safeguarding women and children.”

Others have voiced a more nuanced viewpoint, recognizing the gravity of Kojo’s behavior but being concerned about the mother’s and the child’s future. One person asked, “Yes, what he did is very wrong, but who will take care of the mother and the baby if we jail him for five years?”

There is broad consensus that justice shouldn’t be selective, notwithstanding the differences in viewpoints. Another resident said that the man had already been imprisoned by Saturday, the 12th, after the incident occurred on Thursday. “They ought to put dishonest politicians in jail who embezzle millions from the nation with the same vigor.”

Human rights activists claim that the case highlights the need for more robust safeguards for women and children who are victims of domestic abuse. A spokesperson for a women’s rights group stated, “This is not just about punishment.” “It is intended to convey the message that abuse is never acceptable, particularly when a child is involved.”

Although the mother and child are reportedly in stable health at this time, many are urging the government to intervene and offer assistance.

Ghanaians are raising serious concerns about the video’s continued circulation, not only about the country’s legal system but also its principles of accountability, justice, and safety.

Gold Coast Refinery offers govt 15% carried interest

0

Gold Coast Refinery, the biggest refinery in West Africa, has offered 15 per cent share of its profit to the government as its contribution towards the streamlining of the country’s gold sector.

The carried interest which would be handled by the newly constituted Gold Board on behalf of the country is in recognition of the support the refinery received from the government during its establishment, and the desire to streamline gold trade across the entire value chain.

“We offer the Republic of Ghana, represented by Gold Board, 15 per cent as carried interest. I announce here, in my capacity, as the Chairman of the Board and CEO, and this is a gift from us to Gold Board,” he emphasised.

The Board Chairman and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the company, Dr Saed Deraz, announced this when the Chief Executive Officer of the defunct Precious Minerals Marketing Company and the newly established Gold Board, Mr Sammy Gyamfi, paid courtesy call of him at his office in Accra on Wednesday.

The visit was to afford Mr Gyamfi to assess the operations of the refinery which is the second biggest on the continent as well as ascertain its capacity in terms of the volume of gold it could refine in a day.

It was also to explore ways by which Gold Coast Refinery can support the government’s agenda of adding value to the country’s large deposits of gold before exporting it.

Dr Deraz said he appreciated very much the support of the President towards the establishment of the refinery and believed it was time to also support his vision of developing the entire value chain of the gold trade in the country.

He stated that the visit by the CEO of the Gold Board presented a big chance for the two entities to cooperate for the development of the sector up to its peak.

“We followed his vision to build this refinery. He would like to add value to the gold. He would like to organise the gold sector. He doesn’t like the idea that just everyone exports the gold ore outside just so the nation doesn’t lose,” he concluded.

On his part, Mr Gyamfi indicated that President John Dramani Mahama was determined to restructure and streamline the gold trading sector of Ghana.

He noted that it was on that basis that the Ghana Gold Board was established to structure, regulate and streamline the gold trading sector that had been established.

Mr Gyamfi further explained that the objective of the new entity was to optimise the full benefits of gold for the country across the entire value chain.

“The act has been passed, meaning that the Gold Board is now inexistence and has taken over the functions and powers of PMMC, but we are yet to commence business.

We are currently making preparations to commence business by the first week of May, where we will commence the purchase and export of gold over there, with the main purpose of raising the much-needed foreign exchange for Ghana to stabilse our currency,” he revealed.

Additionally, Mr Gyamfi stated that it would also support gold reserve accumulation by the Bank of Ghana, however, very key to the functions of the Gold Board was the pursuit of value addition.

This, he said, made operations of entities like the Gold Coast Refinery very essential, adding that, “His Excellency has directed us to put in place the necessary measures and move the country away from the export of dory bars to bullion, and also to make allocation from the gold we buy to support those who are involved in the downstream fabrication of gold.”

Miracle Adoma, the wife of Ghanaian media personality, Kofi Adoma, has given what seems to be a positive update on her husband’s health progress.

In a Facebook post made on Saturday, April 12, 2025, Miracle Adoma expressed gratitude for the life of her husband, who has been battling for his eyesight following a tragic incident where the media personality was shot in the face with gunpowder.

“No matter how high the sun shines in the afternoon, it must give way for the moon at night. Lord, I am grateful for the life of my husband, Kofi Adoma, and the family. People, light has come, and darkness has been lifted,” she wrote.

Kofi Adoma sustained a serious eye injury on January 15, 2025, while covering the Kwafie Festival and the 25th anniversary of the Dormaahene’s enstoolment at Dormaa Ahenkro, in the Bono Region.

Initial reports suggested the injury resulted from gunpowder residue or pellets during a traditional musketry display, but his wife, Miracle Adoma, later clarified that an individual deliberately shot him in the face.

The incident led to partial vision loss in one eye.

Prior to her recent update, Kofi Adoma had undergone multiple surgeries in Dubai and was still recovering, with his wife indicating that her husband had been scheduled for further surgeries.

While Miracle Adoma’s post did not give a clear indication of his current status, some of her followers on Facebook have read positive meanings into the post, with some followers expressing gratitude and delight.

Kantamanto Market leadership distances itself from GUCDA strike

0

Kantamanto Market plays a crucial role in Ghana's informal economy Kantamanto Market plays a crucial role in Ghana’s informal economy

The leadership of Kantamanto Market has publicly rejected assertions made by the Ghana Used Clothing Dealers Association (GUCDA), describing them as misleading and unrepresentative of the true voices within the market.

In a statement issued by the market leadership, they reaffirmed their commitment to transparency, sustainability, and their ongoing partnership with The OR Foundation.

According to the Kantamanto Market leadership, GUCDA represents only a small segment of the secondhand clothing trade — mainly importers — and not the diverse community of small-scale retailers, head porters (kayayei), tailors, upcyclers, and resellers who drive the market’s daily operations.

“GUCDA does not represent us,” the leadership emphasised, reiterating a previous public declaration and calling on the media and development stakeholders to make this distinction clear.

The leadership also expressed strong support for The OR Foundation, highlighting its years of collaboration with Kantamanto retailers.

They noted that the OR Foundation has earned the community’s trust through consistent support, including fire recovery aid, upcycling training, public health initiatives, and research carried out in partnership with market workers.

“Their estimate that around 40% of clothing that enters the market becomes waste is not misinformation — it is an accurate reflection of our daily experience,” the leadership asserted.

They also explained that traders often have no control over the contents of imported clothing bales, which frequently contain torn, stained, outdated, or excess items that are difficult or impossible to sell.

“Waste is not a smear campaign — it is the reality we confront every day,” the leadership said, dismissing GUCDA’s suggestion that the issue was an attack on livelihoods.

The leadership emphasised that the waste problem was systemic, stemming from overproduction in the Global North.

“Kantamanto and Ghana are not dumping grounds by choice, but by design. The global fashion system creates this imbalance, and until that is addressed, local traders will continue to bear the burden,” they said.

Responding to GUCDA’s claim that their strike action represented the interests of Kantamanto traders, the leadership strongly disagreed, noting that prominent individuals featured in GUCDA’s campaign were importers and not the traders who deal with the day-to-day labor and risks of selling secondhand clothes.

“We reject any effort to erase the voices of those who work hardest to sustain this market,” the statement said, adding that attempts to incite protests were undermining the progress being made through local and international collaboration.

The leadership declared that Kantamanto Market remains open and active despite recent challenges, including a devastating fire earlier in the year.

They credited the OR Foundation for providing essential support, such as construction materials and emergency financial aid, to over 9,000 people.

“Our resilience is strong, and our market is vibrant. We welcome all partners who want to trade, collaborate, and invest in a sustainable future,” the statement concluded.

Hearts will be playing away at Tema on Sunday Hearts will be playing away at Tema on Sunday

All eyes are on Tema Newtown’s Nii Adjei Kraku II Sports Complex this Sunday, April 13, as newcomers Vision FC host Hearts of Oak at home in Round 27 of the Ghana Premier League.

Vision are currently 14th on the league table and fighting to stay in the top tier.

Despite their inconsistent overall form, they have been hard to beat at home, remaining unbeaten in their last six home games (4 wins, 2 draws).

Their most recent home victory was a thrilling 3-2 win over title-holders FC Samartex 1996, proof of their home striking power.

Meanwhile, Hearts, who are 6th on the table, are struggling. A 1-0 victory over Medeama SC in the last round broke their four-game winless streak.

The Phobians have won none of their last five away matches, three of which were drawn and two of which were lost.

Their struggles on the road are a concern, especially against a Vision side that has made their home a mini fortress.

That said, the recent contract extension of their captain and goalkeeper, Benjamin Asare, to 2027 could serve as a morale booster for the team.

Expect a spirited fight from Vision as they try to capitalize on Hearts’ away woes, but the visitors will be eager to turn their season around and keep their top-four hopes alive.

NPP will continue to suffer if ‘demons’ in leadership positions are not removed – Prof Frimpong-Boateng

0

Former Minister of Environment, Science, and Technology, Professor Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng

Legon Cities seek lifeline in crucial clash against Samartex

0

The fight for survival continues as Legon Cities, deep in the relegation zone, host defending champions Samartex 1996 in a must-win encounter at the University of Ghana Stadium on Sunday.

It’s another season of struggle for the Royals, who currently sit 17th on the Ghana Premier League table with just 22 points from 25 games. Their record of six wins, four draws, and 15 defeats leaves them with little margin for error as the campaign enters its final stretch.

Home form has been their saving grace—every one of their six victories this season has come at home, including a memorable triumph over Asante Kotoko on matchday six.

However, they’ve also drawn four and lost four times on home turf. On the road, they’ve been dismal—no wins, two draws, and 11 losses.

In their last five matches, Legon Cities have managed five points, but dropped points against struggling side Accra Lions, Karela United, and Young Apostles have severely dented their survival hopes.

Samartex, meanwhile, are six points off the top four. It’s been a season of mixed fortunes for the reigning champions, who have drawn more games (11) than they’ve won (8).

Their away form hasn’t been convincing either, with only two wins in 12 outings (W2 D6 L4), though they head into this game motivated by a 2-0 win over Accra Lions last weekend.

The Timber Giants will hope to make back to back wins against Legon Cities this season as they defeated them by a narrow 1-0 win at home on matchday 10.

Cities are three points adrift of 15th-placed Karela United and will be keeping a close eye on their fixture against Aduana FC.

For Legon Cities, this is more than just another fixture—it’s a fight for survival. For Samartex, it’s an opportunity to add to their away tally and edge closer to the top four.

Kick-off is at 15:00 GMT at the University of Ghana Stadium.

Ghana owes ECOWAS 27,000 tons of rice and maize from 2018 – Agric minister

0

Minister for Food and Agriculture, Eric Opoku Minister for Food and Agriculture, Eric Opoku

The Minister for Food and Agriculture, Eric Opoku, has said that the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) is demanding the return of some 27,000 tons of food supplies borrowed by Ghana in 2018.

According to the minister, he has pleaded with ECOWAS for a one-year grace period to raise the credited food items for repayment.

“Recently, leaders from ECOWAS came to our office. They said Ghana owes them rice and maize of about 27,000 tons, which we borrowed in 2018, and that they are asking that we refund it,” he disclosed during the launch of the government’s Feed Ghana Programme on Saturday, April 12, 2025, at Techiman.

“Mr. President, I have, in your name, pleaded that once we commence the Feed Ghana initiative, we will come and repay the loan in one year’s time,” he added.

He described the programme as a game-changing initiative aimed at steering Ghana toward food sufficiency and urged every citizen to get on board and eschew politicisation of the policy.

The Feed Ghana policy is a flagship initiative by the John Dramani Mahama government aimed at modernising agriculture, boosting food security, and supporting Ghana’s economic transformation.

Speaking at the event on Saturday, President Mahama said the initiative is a critical component of his broader Agriculture for Economic Transformation Agenda (AETA), which is designed to create jobs, reduce food inflation, and improve livelihoods through sustainable agricultural practices.

Prof Gyampo sets new tone of frugality, integrity, at Ghana Shippers Authority

0

In a time when public confidence in leadership is often undermined by tales of extravagance and mismanagement, Professor Rasford Gyampo, the newly appointed Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Shippers Authority (GSA), is setting the pace for an austere and principled leadership style.

In an exclusive interview with Adomonline.com, Professor Gyampo revealed a series of decisive measures he has implemented to rescue the financially-strained Authority.

According to him, these efforts are not only part of an ethical commitment but a practical necessity to restore the institution’s financial stability and credibility.

“I travel economy class – and so will everyone else”.

“I believe I am the only CEO in Ghana at the moment who travels abroad with an economy class ticket,” Prof. Gyampo stated.

“I do so because the current financial position of my organisation makes it unethical and unthinkable for me to be opulent.”

This symbolic yet powerful gesture has come to define the new culture he is cultivating at the GSA—one rooted in accountability, fiscal discipline, and shared sacrifice.

“I am of the firm belief and conviction that CEOs and Managers of organisations that run at a loss must have no business enjoying largess that goes with their positions,” he added.

Inheriting a cash-strapped Authority

Prof. Gyampo took over leadership of the GSA amid a significant financial crisis, largely stemming from a sweeping government policy under the Mahama administration.

The policy involved the consolidation of excess funds from various government agencies to meet pressing national financial obligations, including the payment of bondholders.

While effective from a national budgeting standpoint, the initiative left institutions like the Ghana Shippers Authority severely cash-strapped.

“This meant the Authority suddenly became cash-strapped,” Gyampo explained. “So as CEO, I had to offer an innovative response to cut expenditure to ensure that the organization survives.”

Bold cost-cutting measures

In response, the new CEO has rolled out a comprehensive cost-cutting strategy. Key among these measures include:

Terminating and renegotiating contracts: Several pre-existing contracts were either cancelled or renegotiated to secure better value and lower prices for services.

Suspension of staff incentives: Some staff allowances and incentive packages have been put on hold temporarily.

Strict travel regulations: All foreign travel has been suspended unless it is deemed essential to the work of the Authority.

When such travel is necessary, every staff member—from senior executives to junior employees—must travel economy class.

“Even on the few occasions I have had to travel, I have flown economy, and this will continue,” he emphasized. “We must rethink the practice where very ordinary people who get political appointments suddenly develop an over-bloated sense of themselves.”

A new model for public sector leadership?

Professor Gyampo’s bold stance is particularly noteworthy given the perception of endemic waste and entitlement in several state-owned enterprises.

Though it’s early days yet, many see the Ghana Shippers Authority as a potential success story—one that could demonstrate how moral leadership and prudent management can breathe new life into a struggling public institution.

As the GSA navigates its path to recovery, all eyes will be on Professor Gyampo and the transformative agenda he has begun to set in motion—one economy-class flight at a time.

Aboubakar Ouattara names a 22-man squad to battle with Annor Walker’s Vision FC

0

Annor walker’s Vision FC will welcome Hearts of Oak at the Nii Adjei Kraku II Sports Complex on Sunday in the Premier League match Day 27 fixture

Vision FC have picked just a single victory in their last five outings (D2, L2), having scored 20 and conceded the third joint most goals (27).

They are currently 14th in the league table with 28 points after 25 matches in the league this season.

Nana Agyeman’s men are unbeaten in their last five home games (W3, D2) and will hope to continue their incredible home form on Sunday.

Hearts of Oak’s ambition of winning the Premier League this season received a huge boost after ending their four-game winless run at home against Medeama SC in a 1-0 victory (D1, L3).

They are just six points away from the top spot. The Phobians have amassed 40 points from 25 league matches, having scored 21 and conceded the joint least goals in the league prior to this fixture (14).

Aboubakar Ouattara’s men are the second best away performers in the league this season and will be desperate to record their fifth victory away from home on Sunday.

Vision FC are playing Hearts of Oak at home in the league for the first time since the Tema Based gained promotion into the Premier League this season.

I hope Mahama’s reset promise does not return Ghana to military era – Egyapa Mercer

0

Former New Patriotic Party Member of Parliament for Sekondi Constituency, Andrew Egyapa Mercer Former New Patriotic Party Member of Parliament for Sekondi Constituency, Andrew Egyapa Mercer

Former New Patriotic Party Member of Parliament for Sekondi Constituency, Andrew Egyapa Mercer, has raised concerns over actions of the government of President John Dramani Mahama, which he fears may be returning Ghana to the days of military dictatorship.

Speaking on the Saturday, April 12, 2025, edition of Newsfile, the former Minister of Tourism and Creative Arts condemned the attempted arrest of the Member of Parliament for Assin South, Reverend John Ntim Fordjour, describing it as lawless.

“What kind of lawlessness is this? And it’s early days yet. I hope and pray that Mr Mahama’s promise of resetting is not one that resets Ghana into a military era,” he cautioned.

On April 9, 2025, operatives from the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) attempted to arrest Rev John Ntim Fordjour, who also serves as the Ranking Member on Parliament’s Defence and Interior Committee, at his Spintex residence.

The action followed Ntim Fordjour’s April 1, 2025, press conference, where he alleged that two AirMed aircraft that landed at the Kotoka International Airport in March 2025 were involved in potential drug trafficking and money laundering.

The attempted arrest was halted after the intervention of the NPP Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, and other party leaders.

Reacting to the arrest attempt on Saturday, Egyapa Mercer questioned the basis for it, expressing disbelief over the justifications.

“I have read Ntim Fordjour’s press statement, read on behalf of the Minority Caucus in Parliament, three times, and I am still at a loss as to what crime he has committed for the government to want to arrest him,” he stated.

STC can’t boast of 60 fully operational buses – Transport minister

0

The number of operational STC buses is deemed insufficient to meet growing commuter demands The number of operational STC buses is deemed insufficient to meet growing commuter demands

The Ministry of Transport has raised concerns over the limited capacity of Intercity STC Coaches Limited, revealing that the once-proud national transport company currently has fewer than 60 operational buses.

This revelation comes amid increasing public frustration over worsening traffic congestion, particularly during rush hours, which has significantly extended travel times for Ghanaians nationwide.

Speaking on Morning Starr with Naa Dedei Tettey, Minister for Transport Joseph Bukari Nikpe lamented the current state of affairs and called for urgent intervention.

According to him, the number is deemed insufficient to meet growing commuter demands.

“The Ayalolo buses, I’m told, are operational, but unfortunately, they fall under the Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs. Metro Mass Transit and Intercity STC are under the Ministry of Transport,” he explained.

“It [STC] has been a worry for us in the Ministry and the government. STC, which all of us used to travel with pride, cannot boast of 60 buses that are effective and can run any distance without trouble on the way,” the Minister added.

Mr. Nikpe assured that the government is working to procure additional buses to augment the fleet and restore the company’s ability to serve the public effectively.

“We have fewer than 60 buses that are fit for purpose. We are working hard to ensure that we bring in more buses to augment what they have; otherwise, what we have now is not able to satisfy Ghanaian travellers.”

Intercity STC has a storied history dating back to 1909, when it was established as the Government Transport Department to serve the logistical needs of the central government.

In 1965, it was restructured into the State Transport Corporation (STC) to operate commercial passenger services and later expanded in 1968 to include a haulage division.

In June 1995, STC became a limited liability company under Ghana’s Companies Act and was rebranded in October 2003 as Intercity STC Coaches Limited.

Despite its legacy as a trusted public transport provider, the company has faced operational challenges in recent years, largely due to aging fleets and inadequate resources.

Former Ghana international Emmanuel Agyemang-Badu has lavished praise on the Ghana Football Association (GFA) for their efforts in securing the Black Stars’ back-to-back wins.

The senior national team, in the Matchday 5 and 6 games of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, recorded a 5-0 win against Chad followed by a 3-0 victory against Madagascar.

These victories have positioned Ghana at the top of Group I with 15 points after six matches played.

Reflecting on the wins, Agyemang-Badu, who played at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil and the 2015 AFCON final in Equatorial Guinea, applauded the leadership of the GFA for their decision-making, efforts, and plans made before the games.

“I think the Ghana Football Association (GFA) must also be commended for some of their decisions to bring Stephen Appiah and Asamoah Gyan closer to the team,” Agyemang-Badu told Happy FM.

“Winning these two games was important, and the players must be praised, but the GFA must be praised for their efforts and the plans which were laid for the games,” he added.

Ghana will aim to seal their qualification for the Mundial, which will be hosted in the USA, Canada, and Mexico, when they take on Chad and Mali in the Matchday 7 and 8 games of the qualifiers in September.
