A young guy from Korle Gono in Accra who goes by Kojo was given a one-week jail sentence after a horrific video of him assaulting his wife while she clutched their 8-month-old child went viral.

Ghanaians took to social media to rapidly express their interest in the Thursday occurrence. Kojo can be seen violently striking his wife in the footage as she cries for assistance and holds their infant in her arms. Many people are astonished and saddened by the court’s decision to sentence Kojo to one week in jail, which was made just two days later on Saturday, April 12.

Reactions on social media have been overwhelmingly positive, with many Ghanaians claiming that the penalty is excessively light. “How is it possible for someone to beat a pregnant woman and only receive one week? Amina, a Korle Gono market woman, remarked, “This is unbelievable.” “Instead of providing justifications for abusers, we ought to be safeguarding women and children.”

Others have voiced a more nuanced viewpoint, recognizing the gravity of Kojo’s behavior but being concerned about the mother’s and the child’s future. One person asked, “Yes, what he did is very wrong, but who will take care of the mother and the baby if we jail him for five years?”

There is broad consensus that justice shouldn’t be selective, notwithstanding the differences in viewpoints. Another resident said that the man had already been imprisoned by Saturday, the 12th, after the incident occurred on Thursday. “They ought to put dishonest politicians in jail who embezzle millions from the nation with the same vigor.”

Human rights activists claim that the case highlights the need for more robust safeguards for women and children who are victims of domestic abuse. A spokesperson for a women’s rights group stated, “This is not just about punishment.” “It is intended to convey the message that abuse is never acceptable, particularly when a child is involved.”

Although the mother and child are reportedly in stable health at this time, many are urging the government to intervene and offer assistance.

Ghanaians are raising serious concerns about the video’s continued circulation, not only about the country’s legal system but also its principles of accountability, justice, and safety.
