According to Ghana Web report, Media personality and political commentator Paul Adom-Otchere has raised serious concerns regarding alleged financial incentives provided to Members of Parliament (MPs) from the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to secure their support for government policies. The reports, which surfaced through Ghana Web, suggest that these arrangements are designed to appease disgruntled MPs who feel sidelined after being overlooked for key government positions.
Adom-Otchere referenced the recent approval by Parliament of a GH¢250,000 allocation for each MP to fund education-related projects, alongside an additional GH¢150,000 earmarked for monitoring these projects. He pointed out that these allocations appeared to be part of an effort to placate MPs from the NDC who had not been appointed to ministerial or deputy ministerial roles, thus leaving them without executive influence.
There’s concern from the 188 NDC MPs who did not secure ministerial positions… they do not have any executive authority, and they feel pressure from their constituents,” Adom-Otchere explained, suggesting that this lack of high-profile appointments is causing discontent within the party ranks.
The media personality went on to claim that some of these MPs fear their absence from key government roles could diminish their chances in the upcoming 2028 party primaries, which has led to dissatisfaction and unrest within the NDC. Adom-Otchere alleged that to manage this discontent, the Ministry of Finance has offered a quarterly payment of GH¢400,000 to these MPs to ensure their support for the government’s legislative agenda.
This payment is supposedly aimed at ensuring support for bills, with the NDC reportedly telling MPs to vote in favor of government business,” Adom-Otchere said, raising the possibility of financial arrangements being used to secure votes. While he expressed hope that the claims are untrue, Adom-Otchere cautioned that if these reports were accurate, it could signal deeper issues within the NDC parliamentary group.
The allegations, if true, could paint a troubling picture of the political climate in Ghana, where financial incentives may be seen as a means to influence lawmakers’ decisions. The claims have yet to be verified, but they have already sparked a wider conversation about the potential for corruption and the ethical implications of such arrangements in Ghana’s political landscape.
As the story continues to develop, many are watching closely to see how the NDC will respond to these claims and whether any further revelations will emerge about the inner workings of the party.

One person has reportedly lost her life, and two others sustained serious injuries following violent protests by some youth in Zabzugu, located in the Northern Region.
The unrest was sparked by opposition to the President’s nomination of Municipal and District Chief Executives.
The protesting youth expressed their disapproval of the nomination of Daniel Lakob Tanei. In response, they blocked roads and issued threats to destroy party properties and other government institutions.
Security personnel quickly intervened, but the situation escalated when the youth regrouped on the outskirts of the town, firing gunshots and harassing passersby.
During the chaos, a man riding a motorbike with two women — one of whom was seven to eight months pregnant — was stopped by the youth. When he refused to comply, they opened fire, killing the pregnant woman and injuring both the rider and the other woman.
The body of the deceased has been transported to the Yendi Hospital morgue, while the injured are receiving treatment at the Zabzugu Hospital.
Tensions remain high in the area, and security forces are on high alert to prevent further violence or possible reprisals.

A Plus Finally Speaks The Truth About The GH¢200,000 He Allegedly Received In Parliament
News Hub Creator4h
The Minister for Gomoa Central, Kwame A Plus, has responded to recent accusations made by journalist Paul Adom-Otchere regarding the GH¢200,000 GETFund allocation to Members of Parliament (MPs).
Speaking in a video shared on his official Facebook page, A Plus claims what Paul Adom-Otchere said on his Good Evening Ghana show is not true. According to A Plus, Mahama government made plans to give all 275 constituencies GH¢200,000 each to carry out educational projects in their areas.
He added that, as of now, the money has not even been released. And when it finally comes, it will not be given directly to him as MP. Instead, it will be managed by the District Education Director at the assembly level. Together, they will sit down and decide how the funds will be used effectively to support educational projects in the constituency.
A Plus believes Paul Adom-Otchere should not have rushed to accuse him without knowing the full facts. He said it would have been better for Paul to wait until the end of the year to see how the money was used before criticizing.
He made it clear that he is not collecting money to do nothing, as was alleged, and he is committed to using every penny properly to benefit the people of Gomoa Central, especially in the area of education.
A Plus ended his statement by encouraging Ghanaians to seek the truth before believing everything they hear and promised to be transparent and accountable when the funds are finally released.
Kumasi, April 5, GNA – The Ashanti Regional Police Command, has launched an investigation into a shooting incident that happened at the Adventist Senior High School in Kumasi on Friday, April 4 at about 1200 hours.
Preliminary inquiries, according to a statement issued by the Regional Police Command, revealed that a 16-year-old second-year student (identity withheld) brought a locally manufactured pistol loaded with one BB ammunition to the school.
The statement signed by DSP Goodwin Ahianyo, Public Affairs Officer of the Regional Police Command, said the student allegedly sought to show the weapon to a classmate.
“During the exchange, the firearm accidentally discharged, hitting another student,” the statement explained.
It said the injured student had since been treated at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) and currently in stable condition.
The juvenile suspect has been arrested and the spent cartridge retrieved as evidence.
He told the police during interrogation that he took the weapon from his father’s bedroom without his knowledge.
Efforts are underway to locate and arrest the father to assist in investigations.
Richard Ahiagbah, the Director of Communications for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has warned against the politicisation of the ongoing saga involving the missing Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) containers from the Tema Port.
The case has stirred controversy after reports emerged that the ECG had initially claimed to have 2,491 uncleared containers at the port, filled with cables and other critical equipment needed for the country’s energy infrastructure.
However, an independent audit conducted at the port revealed a stark discrepancy that only 1,134 containers were found, leaving a significant 1,357 containers unaccounted for.
The missing containers reportedly contain equipment that are worth millions of dollars and are considered vital for Ghana’s power distribution system.
Samuel Dubik Mahama, the former Managing Director of ECG suggested that the containers may have simply been misplaced rather than actually gone missing.
Against this backdrop of growing frustration, Richard Ahiagbah spoke out in an attempt to steer the conversation away from partisan political rhetoric and focus on the practicalities of resolving the issue.
Speaking on The Big Issue on Channel One TV, Ahiagbah expressed his concerns about the politicisation of the matter, stressing that the priority should be to locate the missing containers before any further action is taken.
“Prosecution is a good way to go but first of all, let’s find these containers. I understand these containers totalled about $490 million and that is not chicken change.
“Let’s take away the politics and come to the conversation with clean hands and say that we want to find them because they cannot be missing.”

Ghanaian actress Vicky Zugah has challenged the notion that only women face fertility limitations due to aging, arguing that men also have an “expiry date.”
In a video shared on Instagram on March 27, 2025, she stated that conditions such as andropause, premature ejaculation, and erectile dysfunction prove that men, too, experience reproductive decline with age.
Thousands of mourners gathered at the Jehovah Shammah Assemblies of God Church in Ashongman Estates, Accra, on Saturday, April 5, to bid an emotional farewell to Joana Deladem Yabani, the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) student who was allegedly murdered by her boyfriend in February.
The solemn atmosphere was thick with sorrow as family, friends, schoolmates, church members, and dignitaries flooded the church premises for the final funeral rites. Emotions ran high as tributes poured in for the young woman whose life was tragically cut short.
Representatives from the KNUST student body and the Achimota Old Students Association joined the bereaved family to pay their respects. Also in attendance were leaders from various Assemblies of God branches, a host of clergy, and security officials, including the Ashanti Regional Police Commander, DCOP Teye Cudjoe.
In her honour, the JDAY Foundation was launched during the service, aiming to raise awareness and fight against gender-based violence and tragic relationship-related crimes. The foundation seeks to ensure that Joana’s story sparks lasting change and safeguards others from similar fates.
Joana, a promising student, was found dead near the university’s Rehabilitation and Disability Centre on February 27, 2025. Her boyfriend, Daniel Tuffour, is standing trial in connection with her death, which remains surrounded by unanswered questions.
Joana is survived by her parents, Dr. John B.K. Yabani and Mrs. Rejoice Amakie Yabani, and eight siblings. A thanksgiving service is scheduled for April 13 at the same church to celebrate her life and legacy.
Civil Society Organisation, Citizen Eye Ghana (CITEG) has expressed deep concern over what it describes as the selective nature of the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) newly launched Unity Agenda, warning that such an approach could deepen existing divisions within the party rather than promote reconciliation.
In a press release dated April 4, 2025, and sighted by GhanaWeb, the founder and president of CITEG, Alex Kwaku Tetteh, criticised a recent closed-door meeting held at the Rock City Hotel in Kwahu.
He argued that the exclusivity of the event undermines the broader objective of unifying the party.
“With unity as the sole focus, such future events should be inclusive of all party stakeholders. Selective recognition can deepen divisions rather than heal them,” Tetteh said.
The organisation, however, commended former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s remarks at the gathering, particularly his candid acknowledgment of underutilising presidential powers.
Akufo-Addo also reminded party members that leadership within the NPP must be earned, not inherited, citing that both he and former President John Agyekum Kufuor ascended to the presidency without having served as vice presidents.
As the NPP prepares for its upcoming flagbearer contest, Citizen Eye Ghana highlighted key contenders, including former Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia, Kennedy Agyapong, Bryan Acheampong, and Boakye Agyarko.
The group called on party leadership to ensure a fair and level playing field for all aspirants.
“There is currently no ban on campaigning; therefore, those who claim Hon. Ken Ohene Agyapong has flouted party rules are spreading falsehoods,” the group added.
CITEG also referenced a recent poll by Global InfoAnalytics, which revealed that 68% of respondents held former President Akufo-Addo responsible for the NPP’s electoral defeat.
The poll further showed that 40% blamed Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta, while 37% pointed to Vice President Bawumia.
Notably, 9% blamed Kennedy Agyapong, despite his support for Bawumia during the 2024 campaign.
CITEG concluded by urging the NPP to rebuild public trust through transparent, inclusive, and accountable leadership as the nation heads toward another critical election season.
Joyce Blessing speaks on missing out on TGMA nominations
Ghanaian gospel musician Joyce Blessing has revealed that she missed out on the 2025 Telecel Ghana Music Awards (TGMA) nominations because she was out of the country at the time.
According to the Victory hitmaker, she did not make it onto this year’s nomination list because she had traveled abroad during the filing period.
She added that her song ‘Over Do’ had performed well during the year under review and would have been submitted for nomination if she had been in the country.
“I was unable to file for the TGMA this year because I was out of the country. By the time I returned, the filing window had closed. I would have submitted my song Over Do if I had been in town,” she explained in an interview on Onua FM.
Joyce Blessing further emphasised that although she traveled with her management team, they unfortunately missed the nomination window together.
However, she did not attribute the oversight to any negligence on the part of her team.
“I won’t say this is an error on my management’s part, as they have always filed on my behalf successfully. This was just an unusual situation since we were traveling at the time, so I don’t see it as a major issue,” she stated.
Joyce Blessing, who was nominated last year for her hit song Victory, was unable to win the Gospel Song of the Year category, as she lost to Nacee’s Aseda.

National Communication Officer of the NDC, Sammy Gyamfi, clashed with Assin South MP, Rev. John Ntim Fordjour, during a live TV programme on April 5, 2025.
The heated exchange followed Fordjour’s allegations of money laundering and cocaine smuggling involving two aircraft at Kotoka International Airport.
Speaking on JoyNews’ NewsFile on Saturday, Sammy Gyamfi, accused the New Patriotic Party (NPP) MP of lying to Ghanaians with his allegations.
He said that Rev Ntim Fordjour claimed he had “credible intelligence” of the smuggling of the illicit drugs into the country, but he has not been able to provide any evidence for his claim.
Rev Ntim Fordjour, a former Minister of Education under the Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo government, refuted Sammy Gyamfi’s assertion that he (Fordjour) said he had “credible intelligence”, saying, “But the press release is right before you. You are reading from somewhere else.”
The PMMC managing director was not happy that Rev Ntim Fordjour was heckling his submission.
He slammed him, saying, “Being a nuisance. Your constituents are watching you, you are disgracing yourself. Stop being a nuisance. It is not your time to speak.”
The former deputy education minister retorted, “I take exception to that derogatory remark. I can imagine your discomfort. Who are you covering, the cocaine and the money laundering? Who are you covering? I can imagine your discomfort.”
Sammy Gyamfi then challenged Rev Ntim Fordjour to present the evidence he says he had on the money laundering and the smuggling of the cocaine.
“You have stated that you have intelligence, now you are here… If you are a law-abiding citizen, you care about Ghana, you love Ghana… at least you would have shared that intelligence with the people of Ghana.
“And you see the impudence. He has the temerity to dictate to government who should speak for government. He says that the official spokesperson of government cannot speak to this matter because he lied. Who then should speak on this matter?
“What has Felix said which you have proven to be a lie? Here he’s giving you the numbers of all the aircraft. The date they arrived. He told you that they had landing permits. He told you what they were carrying. He told you the number of days they had to stay at the Kotoka International Airport,” he said.
But the former deputy minister did not backtrack on his claim, insisting, “Check the manifest, check the itinerary.”
Sammy Gyamfi then went on to recall when he was arrested for allegedly publicising fake news, adding that he will ensure that Rev Ntim Fordjour is arrested to substantiate his claims.
“I went to the CID. They asked me. I provided the evidence, and the matter ended. You are here. You’ve made spurious claims. You are talking about intelligence in your possession to the effect that certain aircraft were smuggling illicit substances. You don’t have any evidence.
“You have no conscience, you have no shame, you are an embarrassment to your party, you are an embarrassment to your constituency and it is only in a country like Ghana that you will be entertained. I’m saying that if he doesn’t honour the invitation, he can hide behind his parliamentary privileges, he lie bad because he will be arrested. Some of us will insist that he is arrested.”
Rev Ntim Fordjour called Sammy Gyamfi’s bluff, saying, “I dare you to call them to come and arrest me right here. Sammy, I dare you to come and arrest me. Cover drug dealers.”
Background:
The MP for Assin South and the Minority’s Ranking Member on the Defence and Interior Committee claimed at a press conference on April 1, 2025, that two flights, an air ambulance and a private jet, might have been involved in drug trafficking or money laundering.
He alleged that one of the aircraft, Air MED flight L823 AM, landed in Ghana on March 20 and stayed for five days without any record of transporting a patient.
These allegations led President John Mahama to order security agencies to “immediately and fully collaborate with the honourable Member of Parliament so he provides all necessary information to investigate the allegations and take all action necessary to expose any drug dealing.”
President Mahama also directed all security agencies to work with Rev Ntim Fordjour to investigate the drug trafficking and money laundering claims involving the two suspicious flights at Kotoka International Airport (KIA).
He emphasised that Ghana has a zero-tolerance policy for drug trafficking and will not allow the country to be used as a transit or final destination for illicit drugs.
As a result, all security agencies must act urgently to address the issue.
play videoDr. Daniel McKorley, Executive Chairman of McDan Group
Ghanaian entrepreneur Dr Daniel McKorley, widely known as McDan, has shared his remarkable journey from selling bofrot (deep-fried doughnuts) and kerosene on the streets of La to becoming one of Ghana’s most successful business leaders.
Speaking in an interview with NYDJ, the founder and CEO of the McDan Group addressed the negative perceptions surrounding wealth and success.
He expressed concern over how social media often portrays affluent individuals as corrupt rather than hardworking, which discourages young people from believing in the possibility of genuine success.
“On social media today, many people don’t believe in wealthy individuals. They assume the rich are dishonest. There’s so much resentment. People ask, ‘How can a messenger build an empire?’ or ‘How can someone who sold kerosene become successful?’ But I was once that boy selling bofrot and kerosene on the streets of La,” McDan revealed.
He argued that success is achievable through perseverance, regardless of one’s starting point in life.
McDan further revealed that, in order to instill this value in his own son, he made him work as a security guard to experience the realities of hard work and financial struggle.
“My son was a security guard, not because he wanted to be, but because I wanted him to experience how it feels. So that when he becomes the group chairman of his company and the security guard is complaining, he would understand,” he explained.
McDan also highlighted his commitment to mentoring young entrepreneurs by offering support and opportunities to those striving for success.
“In my small way, that is what I am doing, changing those I can change, helping those I can help,” he concluded.

The courtesy call marked the beginning of Madam Botchwey’s tenure as the 7th Secretary-General of the 56-nation Commonwealth, succeeding Baroness Patricia Scotland.
She becomes the first Ghanaian and the second African to hold this prestigious position.

This decision reflects a deep sense of responsiveness to the economic burdens faced by citizens and a commitment to fairness in taxation.
During an interaction with Despite Media’s Peace FM, William Boadi, Executive Director of EAI, emphasized the institute’s longstanding advocacy against the E-Levy, highlighting its negative impact on individuals and businesses. He reiterated that EAI has consistently called for relief measures to ease the financial strain on Ghanaians.
“For months, EAI has been at the forefront of advocating for policies that promote economic relief for the ordinary Ghanaian. The E-Levy has placed an additional financial burden on people, and by heeding the call to refund these deductions, President Mahama has demonstrated strong leadership and a commitment to the well-being of citizens,” he stated.
As a think tank dedicated to educational and economic development, EAI believes that sustainable and citizen-centered policies are crucial for national progress. The institute urges further stakeholder engagements to ensure that future taxation policies are fair and beneficial to all Ghanaians.
EAI remains committed to advocating for policies that prioritize the welfare of the people and will continue to engage policymakers to drive meaningful change.
Afenyo-Markin (left), Great Ampong (middle) and Omane Acheampong (right)
Minority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Kwamina Afenyo-Markin, has advised two gospel musicians Great Ampong and Nicholas Omane Acheampong to remain hopeful in the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
He encouraged the gospel artistes not to let the party’s disappointing defeat in the 2024 general elections discourage them from continuing their support as they have done in the past.
The Member of Parliament for Effutu commended the two gospel musicians and their colleagues for their immense support of the NPP during the 2024 general elections campaign period.
During a visit by Ampong and Acheampong to the MP’s office, Afenyo-Markin assured them that the party would conduct its internal elections and prepare adequately for the upcoming general elections.
“You and your friends who mounted platforms to sing and encourage people, I want to emphasise that you should not be discouraged. I urge you and your colleagues to stand firm.
“The NDC went into opposition and is now back. We will be electing our constituency, polling station, and regional officers, and then our flagbearer, so we can start moving forward. I believe that if we work together patiently, it will flourish,” he said.
Great Ampong and Omane Acheampong strongly advocated for the NPP and its flagbearer, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, during the elections.
Other gospel artistes, including Diana Asamoah and others, composed a campaign song for the party, but it was not enough to secure them power.

Murtala Mohammed is the Minister of Environment, Science and Technology
The Minister of Environment, Science, and Technology, Dr Murtala Mohammed, has stated that the government has commenced the process to amend the Minerals and Mining Act of 2003 to combat illegal mining activities, commonly known as galamsey.
According to him, repealing the Minerals and Mining Act of 2003 would prohibit individuals from engaging in illegal mining activities in various forest areas nationwide for preservation purposes.
The minister emphasised that this action aligns with the National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) commitment to fighting the menace of illegal mining activities and protecting lands from destruction.
Speaking on Key Points aired on TV3 on Saturday, April 5, 2025, Murtala assured the public that the government would do its best to ban galamsey in forest areas.
“We are initiating the process of repealing the Minerals and Mining Act of 2003 to bar individuals from mining in forest areas,” he said.
His comments come amid vehement criticisms from a section of the public regarding the government’s lackadaisical approach to resolving illegal mining activities.
President John Dramani Mahama has been called out by key stakeholders for failing to take drastic measures to fight galamsey as promised during the 2024 election campaign period.

Portable, a controversial singer, has sparked controversy by making romantic advances towards Nollywood actress Regina Daniels.
Regina Daniels recently shared stunning photos on Instagram, showcasing her stunning beauty and confident pose for the camera.
Controversial Nigerian singer, Portable, has once again grabbed attention—this time for his bold display of affection toward Nollywood actress Regina Daniels.
Media personality and show host on UTV, Yaa Konama, has called on the leadership of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to protect the party’s current 88 Members of Parliament from being contested when the party holds its next primary.
Speaking on her show, the experienced journalist stated that these MPs fought hard in the election to win and saved the NPP from an embarrassing defeat in the 2024 parliamentary election.
She contended that these MPs, who form the ‘mighty minority’ in Parliament, are keeping the government on its toes, which is why they need to be protected.
“My appeal is that those in the NPP who are lacing their boots to contest for Parliament, please allow the 88 MPs to go unopposed. If it were not for these MPs who have saved the NPP, the situation would have been very bad. Aside from this, many of the current 88 MPs have incurred a lot of debt to enter Parliament. It will be unfair to contest such MPs. One such constituency is Trobu, where a woman fought hard to win the seat for the NPP, which was on the verge of being lost.
“The NPP hierarchy should protect the 88 seats. The focus should be on some traditional seats that have been lost and others. As for the 88, they should be shielded; they fought really hard. Why change an army general who has won the battle for you? Please do well to protect the women among the 88 MPs. It is good we protect them.”
From a total of 138 MPs in the 2020 elections, the NPP suffered its worst parliamentary election defeat under the Fourth Republic, as it currently boasts only 88 MPs after the 2024 election.

Accra, April 05, GNA – Mr Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, the Minister of Foreign Affairs has commenced a special initiative of rotating his office and making the Foreign Minister more accessible to Ghanaians everywhere in the world.
The Minister in a statement noted that their first batch of office rotation was taking them to Benin, Nigeria and Togo.
“I have so far spent two days in Benin interacting with the vibrant Ghanaian community here, meeting Ghanaian students on a French-Year-Abroad Programme, speaking with Ghanaian entrepreneurs, meeting with staff of STC and holding talks with the impressively organized leadership of the Ghanaian community in Benin,” Mr Ablakwa stated.
“The exclusive engagement with staff of our diplomatic mission has been absolutely beneficial as it will clearly lead to the right and most appropriate set of interventions when I return to Accra.”
The Minister said, he had also inspected all Ghana’s diplomatic properties to appreciate their true state for a more curated policy response.
During my visit, I availed myself for private consultations at our embassy with Ghanaians desirous of a one-on-one opportunity to discuss important and urgent matters with their Foreign Minister.”
He said he intends to embark on this special office rotation and working visits initiative regularly.
He noted that he was looking forward to spending the next three days in Nigeria.
“We hope to reach out to our compatriots in Africa before replicating this in other continents,” Mr Ablakwa stated.
He reiterated that President Mahama’s administration was committed to open, transparent, hands on and accessible governance.
The Private Health Facilities Association of Ghana (PHFAoG) has announced the immediate suspension of health insurance services for National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) cardholders at all its member facilities, citing non-payment of outstanding claims by the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA).
The association, in a statement signed and issued by its President, Dr. Kwame Buabeng-Frimpong, on Friday, April 4, revealed that the NHIA owes service providers for claims dating back to September and October 2024, despite repeated assurances and engagements.
“Despite numerous requests and engagements with the NHIA, coupled with several promises and timelines given, our member facilities are yet to receive reimbursement for services rendered for such a long period,” the association said.
The group noted that the delay has caused severe financial strain on its members, making it difficult for them to continue providing quality care to NHIS beneficiaries.
PHFAoG expressed disappointment with the NHIA’s failure to follow through on a recent promise to settle claims by the end of March, as captured in a March 25, 2025 press release from the Authority.
According to the association, suppliers and creditors were given assurances based on that promise, which unfortunately did not materialise.
While the association acknowledged the inconvenience this decision may cause NHIS cardholders, it stressed that the suspension was necessary to sustain operations.
NHIS clients are advised to carry enough money to pay for their medication and other services until claims are paid.
The association is urging the NHIA to take immediate steps to clear the arrears and ensure prompt payments going forward.
Convener of the Media Coalition Against Galamsey, Dr Ken Ashigbey has told President John Dramani Mahama to deal with the politically exposed person involved in the Illegal small-scale mining (Galamsey) practice
Dr Ken Ashigbey revealed that illegal miners belonging to the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and National Democratic Congress (NDC) have partnered to engage in the galamsey activities.
The Ministry of Health and the Foods and Drugs Authority (FDA) have destroyed a large consignment of opioids intercepted at the Tema Port last month.
A total of 230 cartons of opioids were destroyed in yesterday’s exercise which was undertaken at a private incinerator at Katamanso, near Ashaiman, in the Greater Accra Region.
They included 128 cartons of tafradol, 92 cartons of timaking tapentadol and 10 cartons of rahol tapentadol.
The destruction was witnessed by the Registrar of the High Court, personnel of the FDA, the Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC), as well as the Ministry of Environment, Science and Technology, based on the orders of the Accra High Court.
Also present at the destruction was the Minister of Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, and the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the FDA, Dr Delese Mimi Darko.
Background
The consignment of undeclared opioid pharmaceuticals, worth GH¢20 million, was purportedly in transit to the land-locked West African state, Niger.
They were seized following a joint operation by regulatory and intelligence agencies at the Tema Port on March 14, this year.
The shipment was seized following a coordinated inspection involving the Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), the NACOC, National Security, the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB), the FDA, and the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA).
The consignment included a large quantity of opioid pharmaceuticals, laced with other drugs, raising concerns over illicit drug trafficking through Ghana’s ports.
Briefing
Briefing journalists at Vigour Enterprise, a private incinerator at Katamanso Newland in the Greater Accra Region, Mr Akandoh said the safe disposal of the items followed a court order secured for their destruction.
On March 14, 2025, a team of NACOC, FDA and GRA Customs Division officials impounded the consignment of opioids being transported under the guise of transiting from Ghana to Niger.
After impounding the consignment, the state sought a court order for the destruction of the opioids.
The courts granted the destruction application with clear orders, including the venue for destruction and the people who must witness the destruction.
Way forward
Mr Akandor said after the safe disposal of the consignment, the government was going further to interrogate and investigate the client, agent and the importer.
“Our information indicates that the importer is not a Ghanaian. The goods were being transported to Niger.
And so, we are in touch with the Niger government to know whether or not they okayed such a consignment into their country,” the minister said.
“Even if the Niger government has okayed such a consignment, our borders, our ports, our airports will never be used as a haven,” Mr Akandoh stressed.
He said the ministry had waged a war against the influx of opioids in the country and would continue to monitor whatever was going on at the ports and harbours.
Mr Akandor reiterated that only the Kotoka International Airport and the Tema Port had been designated for the import and export of drugs, as such the government had instructed the security agencies, including the Customs Division of GRA, to impound whatever drugs they got at any of the land borders.
On the ongoing investigations, he said customs officials had been instructed to hand over the culprits to the Office of the Attorney-General once they finished the investigation to pave the way for their prosecution.
Collaboration
For her part, the CEO of the FDA said her outfit would continue to collaborate with the Customs Division and other regulatory bodies at the various ports to ensure that such illegal drugs were not sneaked through.
“We have increased our border presence. At the airport, we’re now working 24 hours. So, we’re going to start working 24 hours at the airport, so that our consignment cards are not evaded,” Dr Darko said.
Dangerous opioids
Opioids are strong painkillers or narcotics.
They activate an area of nerve cells in the brain and body called opioid receptors that block pain signals between the brain and the body.
Codeine, heroin, hydrocodone, morphine, oxycodone, and fentanyl are examples of opioids.
When used over time, a person using opioids can become tolerant and addictive, paving the way for its side effects, such as drowsiness, euphoria, nausea, vomiting, slowed breathing and constipation to hold sway.
They can develop opioid use disorder, with the risk of overdose and death.
Tafrodol, for instance, is a combination of the very addictive painkiller, Tapentadol, and Carisoprodol, known to be a strong muscle relaxant.
Many advanced countries consider the drug risky so they put measures in place to control it, and many others are banning it.
“No country in the world allows the legal sale of Tapentadol-Carisoprodol combinations as the formulation makes no sense clinically and the prospects of abuse and harm are so high as to render them literal poisons,” a social innovator and entrepreneur, Bright Simons, points out in a published article.

The Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has hinted at the government’s plans to initiate the construction of a second gas plant under the African Atlantic Gas Project, aimed at addressing Ghana’s energy needs.
At a media briefing following an official engagement with Nigeria’s Foreign Minister on Friday, April 4, Ablakwa noted that Ghana and Nigeria must collaborate to deepen trade on the continent to withstand hostile external trade pressures.
“We are seeking to deepen trade and collaboration. We believe that, looking at the resources that Africa has, we should not be looking externally for salvation. We can look within, and we should look within and come up with homegrown solutions for the transformation of the continent.
“We’ve been discussing the African Atlantic Gas Project. I have also been speaking to him about our plans by President Mahama to initiate the second gas project after the Atuabo Gas Project, which is really going to be a game changer. We’ve also been talking about increasing trade amongst ourselves, taking advantage of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA),” he stated.
Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, expressed optimism about existing and ongoing trade initiatives aimed at advancing Africa.
He, however, urged countries that exited the ECOWAS bloc to reconsider their stance in order to benefit.

Majority leadership committed to growth of new MPs – Edem Agbana
President John Dramani Mahama has nominated former Obuasi MCE, Ofori-Agyeman Boadi, popularly known as King Zuba, for the position of Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly Chief Executive.
This nomination is in line with Article 243 (1) of the 1992 Constitution and Section 20 (1) of the Local Governance Act, 2016 (Act 936), pending approval by the Assembly.
The Bank of Ghana (BoG) is set to strengthen the Specialised Deposit-Taking Institutions (SDI) sector.
The Acting Head of the Banking Supervision of the BoG, Ismail Adam, said the SDIs play a major role in the financial space of Ghana’s economy, hence the need to strengthen the sector, especially the governance structure.
He told journalists in Accra on Friday, April 4, 2025, that the central bank has seen the importance of industry-led consultation for industry-led mergers, which is intended to reshape that space, i.e the SDI sector.
“So the key message there is that we are looking at how to bring in equity from strategic investors. As I said, there are some strategic investors talking to some of these SDIs, and also how to revamp their governance structure such that we have proper governance structure arrangements around their operations.”
Adam further stressed that the central bank is focused on the mission drift of the SDIs to ensure that they carry out the activities for which they have been licensed to do.
“The other issue is how to deal with the mission drift, ie. SDIs are doing things that were not originally the intended activity for that space. So with all these, we are working closely with the Ministry of Finance, as a matter of fact, a consultant was engaged, he did some drafts, Bank of Ghana also constituted an internal committee to do some work on that arrangement”
“So the way forward is to pull these two works that have been done by the consultant that was engaged by the Ministry of Finance together with the work that was done by the internal committee of the Bank of Ghana. The idea of all these is to make sure that that space of the market is revamped to serve that space of the market, people who or hitherto would have been excluded from the financial space but with the intervention of these SDIs are brought onto the financial space both in terms of credit delivery as well as deposit mobilsation,” he said.

In a bid to promote proper hair care, Weave Ghana Limited, producers of Darling and Mega Growth hair products have introduced a new packaging for its Mega Growth brand and launched the “Relax Right” campaign.
Underlining its commitment to making products tailored for the African woman’s hair, the new packaging, now easier to read, also features African models, replacing previous designs that showed more foreign models.
The launch event was held on March 27, 2025, at the Osu Presbyterian Hall in Accra and in collaboration with the Ghana Hairdressers and Beauticians Association (GHABA).
In attendance were members from the various regional units of GHABA.
Addressing The Mirror, the Marketing Lead for Weave Ghana Limited, Angela Ayishetu Baba, said this change reflected the brand’s focus on its main consumers.
“As a leading brand in Africa, we want our products to connect with African women. The new package is clear and easy to read. We have also introduced a twin-pack with a hair relaxer and free neutralising shampoo for convenience,” she said.
Focus on proper hair relaxing
Ms Baba also explained the “Relax Right” campaign, noting that it aimed to educate hairdressers on safe relaxer use in order to prevent hair damage and scalp burns.
“Through this campaign, Weave Ghana Limited will work with the hairdressers’ association to conduct training workshops across Ghana, equipping hairdressers with the knowledge and tools necessary to provide safer and more effective hair treatments,” she added.
The hairdressers welcomed the initiative, acknowledging that their business, built on skills and knowledge, requires ongoing training to stay sharp and updated.
A representative from GHABA, Bernice Asantewaa Asante, admonished members take part in training sessions and the National Vocational Training Institute proficiency exams to stay updated.
The Member of Parliament (MP) for Salaga South, Zuwera Mohammed Ibrahimah, has stated that Africans deserve reparations from the West to address the “historical injustices and injurious crimes committed against Africans and people of African descent through transatlantic enslavement, colonisation, and apartheid.”
She added that such a gesture would also serve to “address the inequities present in the international economic and political orders, as well as demonstrate progress toward reparatory justice and healing for Africans and all people of African descent.”
Addressing the subject in Parliament on Friday, following the theme of the African Union’s 38th Ordinary Session of the Assembly held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, from February 15–16, 2025, the MP referenced a previous conference in Accra on reparations.
That event had proposed the establishment of a “Committee of Experts on Reparations to develop an African Common Position on Reparations.”
The 38th Ordinary Session of the AU Assembly was themed: “Justice for Africans and People of African Descent Through Reparations.”
The Accra Reparations Conference, held from November 14 to 17, 2023, in Ghana’s capital, marked the culmination of years of advocacy for adequate compensation from the West to Africa and its people for the injustices inflicted by the transatlantic slave trade, colonisation, and other dehumanising actions.
Reiterating a statement she had made earlier this year on the floor of Parliament, Ms. Ibrahimah noted that the Accra Conference had further proposed the creation of:
A Committee of Experts on Reparations to develop an African Common Position;
A reference group of legal experts, led by the AU Commission and including judicial and quasi-judicial organs;
A global reparations fund based in Africa; and
A transcontinental partnership framework involving the AU, the African diaspora in Latin America, North America, Europe, the UK, and other relevant groups to build a strong common front in pursuit of reparatory justice on the global stage.
The proposal aligns with the views of several individuals who have recently shared their thoughts on how Africa should advance the reparations agenda.
Summarizing these views, the MP stressed the need for a unified Pan-African movement to champion the cause and ultimately compel the West to compensate Africa and its people for the injustices suffered due to slavery and other dehumanising practices.
President John Dramani Mahama has nominated a 52-year-old professional teacher, Yakubu Yussif Castro, as Municipal Chief Executive for the West Gonja District in the Savannah Region.
The nominee hails from Busunu, a suburb of the municipality, and is being described in political circles as a gifted grassroots politician.
He is one of the early cadres and a member of the Democratic Youth League of Ghana (DYLG), who is said to be a good listener, a true NDC party man, and a unifier.
As a grassroots person, Mr Castro combined his professional and political careers during his first posting to Pepuso, a suburb of Buipe, on 10th October 1994, where he served as headteacher and the only teacher for four classes.
Despite his workload, he agreed to serve his party as the polling station secretary of Pepuso, in what is now the Central Gonja District.
He was later transferred to his hometown, Busunu, where he became secretary to the Presbyterian Primary Temporary Polling Station and subsequently, the Busunu D/A Polling Station. He held this role until the 2012 and 2016 elections, when he contested the Damongo Constituency parliamentary primaries on the ticket of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), but lost both attempts to the current Managing Director of the Ghana Water Company Limited, Adam Mutawakilu, also known as Garlus.
Mr Castro did not give up but entered another race, this time for the position of constituency secretary of Damongo. He again lost, this time to the current secretary of the party, Braimah Alhassan.
According to some youth around him, his loss never deterred him from working for the NDC in the region.
Having lived and worked in the same environment for thirty-one (31) years—from 1994 to date—in the former Damongo District (now including Central and North Gonja), and with a solid understanding of the enclave, Mr Yakubu Yussif Castro is highly tipped as the man to manage the relatively tense political and chieftaincy atmosphere in Damongo. He is also expected to address the annual floods in Damongo and Busunu, while managing the expectations and concerns of the youth.

Michael Donyina Mensah, Executive Director of CenPOA
The politicisation of illegal mining has made it extremely difficult to address the canker, which has now become an existential threat to Ghanaians, the Executive Director of the Centre for Public Awareness and Opinion (CenPOA) has claimed.
According to the policy analyst, politicians have refused to genuinely commit to tackling the issue and instead choose to make political statements at the expense of citizens.
He recounted how former President John Dramani Mahama, while in opposition, capitalised on the galamsey menace and promised to address it if elected.
He noted that some communicators of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) heavily criticised the previous administration and created the impression that only appointees of the then NPP government were involved in illegal mining.
“However, over time, we have all witnessed that members of the current ruling government have also been involved in the illegal activities that are destroying our water bodies and forest reserves,” he said.
Speaking on Frontline on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM, Michael Donyina Mensah stated that Ghanaians expected the NDC to demonstrate the same urgency it showed in passing the Gold Board Bill by repealing Legislative Instrument (L.I.) 2464, which grants permits for mining in forest reserves.
He questioned whether the NDC is prioritising the establishment of the Gold Board over the fight against illegal mining, saying:
“We want President John Dramani Mahama to understand that galamsey was a very topical issue during the general elections, and he should not treat it lightly. If he fails to act, the situation will only worsen.”
“The galamsey problem will be difficult to solve if we continue to politicise it. During the electioneering period, proceeds from illegal mining financed some political campaigns, making it extremely difficult to combat the issue.
“You have to be firm; otherwise, it will be unmanageable. The challenge is that addressing it may provoke backlash from illegal miners who supported political parties. Galamsey made former President Akufo-Addo and the NPP unpopular, and if President Mahama fails to deal with it as he promised, it will also affect the NDC.”
President Donald Trump on Wednesday launched a US trade war with every country via a barrage of tariffs that are set to go into effect almost immediately. American consumers and businesses stand to pay a hefty price for that battle.
For the first time since Trump’s return to the Oval Office, it’s not a question of what could get more expensive due to tariffs but rather a matter of when. And the short answer to what could get expensive is, well, everything.
Assuming Trump proceeds with the plans he laid out on Wednesday — and he has said there is no room for negotiation — only certain goods from Mexico and Canada have a shot at avoiding any tariffs.
Otherwise, all countries’ goods will be subject to a minimum 10% tariff, with rates going much higher for 60 countries the administration deems the “worst offenders” in terms of trade barriers.
At the very top of that list is China. Come April 9, the US will impose a 54% tariff on nearly everything coming from China. And rates go even higher, to 79%, if Trump follows through with his promise to slap an additional 25% tariff on any nation that buys oil from Venezuela, which China has done.
And then starting on May 2, the 54% tariff rate will also be applied to packages worth less than $800 coming to the US from China and Hong Kong. (Think Shein, Temu and AliExpress.)
In total, the average American household will pay $2,100 more per year for goods because of the tariffs, the nonpartisan Tax Foundation estimated.
The ‘worst offenders’
The United States imported $439 billion worth of goods from China last year, the second top source of imports behind Mexico.
Among the other “worst offenders” that the US relies heavily on for imported goods are Vietnam, which will face an across-the-board 46% tariff; and Taiwan, which will be subjected to a 32% tariff rate.
Vietnam was the sixth top source of goods the US imported last year and Taiwan was the eighth, according to US Census Bureau data.
Since tariffs are a tax on imported goods, it’s American businesses that will have to foot the bill initially when goods from these countries reach the US. But it’s not always the case that businesses fully pass along the additional costs they’re responsible for.
In some cases, they may have contracts set in advance with wholesale customers requiring them to sell to them at a given price. Or they may opt to keep prices lower relative to the additional cost they face in order to keep customers.
Even if more production shifts to the US, where Trump has repeatedly said tariffs are “zero,” it can cost more to produce the same goods that were purchased from abroad, which could lead to price hikes.
Having said that, here’s what has the potential to get most expensive from the new round of tariffs.
Laptops and tablets
China, Vietnam and Taiwan were the top three foreign suppliers of laptops and tablets to the US last year, shipping a total of $47.2 billion worth, according to federal trade data.
Almost all consumer electronics, including smartphones and computer monitors, are likely to see price increases.
Additionally, since the US relies heavily on Taiwan for semiconductors, US consumers are likely to see a price hike on laptops, cars, household appliances, medical devices, Wi-Fi routers and LED lightbulbs. And these products often don’t just require one or two chips — new cars contain thousands of them.
(Trump floated a separate 25% semiconductor tariff, but a fact sheet the White House put out on Wednesday said such tariffs won’t come on top of the reciprocal tariffs that were announced.)
Ed Brzytwa, vice president for international trade at the Consumer Technology Association, told CNN it will likely take three to four months for current retail inventories to dry up. At which point, consumers could start to see prices go up “just in time for the back-to-school shopping season and the holidays.”

China and Vietnam shipped a combined $18.5 billion worth of shoes to the US last year. That’s nearly 70% of all shoes the US imported.
Toys
China and Vietnam were the top two sources of foreign toys sent to the US last year, shipping a total of $15 billion worth.
The Toy Association estimates that 77% of all toys sold in the US are manufactured in China alone. “It’s just not an industry that is built to be able to manage through a tariff of that magnitude,” Greg Ahearn, president and CEO of the trade group, told CNN, referring to the soon-to-be 54% tariff on Chinese goods.
American consumers, he said, likely won’t start seeing higher prices until late summer, when new products are typically rolled out ahead of the back-to-school period and shipped along with “staple” toys.
Because the profit margins on toys tend to be fairly slim, toy companies have little ability absorb much of the higher costs from tariffs, he said. All the more so with 54% tariffs.
Toys made in China that are sold in the US, he estimates, will cost consumers at least 30% more than they currently do.
Clothing
If you want a sense of just how much apparel the US imports, look no further than the tags on your clothing. If you’re seeing a lot of China and Vietnam printed, rest assured you’re not alone. Both shipped about $14 billion worth of apparel to the US last year, the top two sources of foreign-made clothes.
On top of which, other top sources of foreign apparel, Bangladesh, India, Indonesia and Cambodia, are also being hit with “reciprocal tariffs” ranging from 26% to 49%.
“The Trump tariffs will have a substantial impact on the fashion industry,” Stephanie Gauzens, a spokesperson for the US Fashion Industry Association, told CNN. Gauzens didn’t provide CNN with estimates on how much more Americans could stand to pay for clothing.

Moira Araba Dawson-Williams, baby mama of renowned Ghanaian politician Kennedy Agyapong, has responded sharply to the former MP’s recent public apology, accusing him of deliberately ignoring the daughter they share, Anell Agyapong.
In a video circulating online, Moira expressed her disappointment in Kennedy Agyapong for choosing to issue a public apology at the TESCON conference held at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), while failing to acknowledge or apologise to his estranged daughter.
“You went to KNUST to say sorry to a bunch of kids who do not know you from anywhere,” she said in the video.
“None of the kids you have refused to pay their school fees attend KNUST.”
Kennedy Agyapong, during his appearance at the event, publicly asked for forgiveness from individuals he had offended over the years. However, Moira noted that the apology was largely directed at male colleagues and political associates, with no mention of the women or children affected by his past remarks and actions.
The former Assin Central MP’s relationship with Moira and their daughter Anell has been strained for years.
In 2020, Kennedy openly disowned Anell after alleging that she dropped out of the Southern California Institute of Technology despite his financial support.
He further accused her and her mother of immoral behavior, refusing to accept Anell’s later public apology when she tried to reconcile.
Moira now believes that Kennedy’s latest attempt at reconciliation is more performative than heartfelt.
According to her, if the politician is genuinely seeking peace, he must begin with those closest to him—especially his children.
“I have accepted the apology,” she stated, “but my daughter and I will visit his house and give him the blasting he deserves.”
Her comments have ignited conversations online, with mixed reactions from the public.
While some sympathize with her position as a mother defending her daughter, others believe the conflict should be resolved privately.
Kennedy Agyapong, known for his outspoken nature and political boldness, has yet to publicly respond to Moira’s latest statements.

He stressed that the support from the majority leadership is empowering them to make meaningful contributions to national development.
Agbana stated “The leadership of the majority caucus led by the honourable Mahama Ayariga and our chief Whip the honourable Rockson-Nelson Etse Dafeamekpor are so committed to giving young people, giving the first timers on our side the opportunity to build our confidence and to contribute to discussions on the floor.
“So the guidance from them, the support the encouragement all contribute to our performance. So you may have realised that in this first meeting many of my colleague first timers made impressive contributions.”

His hard work recently earned him a spot on Temple University’s “30 Under 30” award list.
The award is presented to former students of the university who have made remarkable contributions in their careers and communities before the age of 30.
In a recent post shared on LinkedIn, Annor expressed his gratitude for the recognition, saying, “I’m incredibly honored to be recognized as a Temple 30 Under 30 awardee for 2025!
