Muntaka pledges prison reforms, biannual parole to decongest facilities

Interior Minister Alhaji Mohammed Muntaka Mubarak is pledging major reforms in Ghana’s Prisons Service, including proposing parole twice a year for deserving inmates to help decongest the prisons.

He expressed concern over the deplorable conditions in the prisons and described the inhumane wellbeing of inmates who are currently undergoing reformation in the prisons.

The Minister emphasised the need to grant parole to inmates, increase their feeding, and focus on decongesting the country’s prisons.

He spoke during an engagement with prison officers in Kumasi after interacting with inmates on Friday April 4.

He urged the officers to remain firm in the discharge of their duties and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to addressing their welfare issues.

During a separate meeting with personnel of the Immigration Service, he urged the officers to be proactive in helping with the repatriation of foreigners arrested for engaging in criminal activities.
