President Mahama’s resetting agenda got the Black Stars back on track – JE Sarpong

0

Veteran Ghanaian coach Joseph Emmanuel (JE) Sarpong has revealed that President Mahama’s resetting agenda was instrumental in the Black Stars’ recent resurgence.

Before the National Democratic Congress (NDC) won power on December 7, 2024, the Black Stars had endured a challenging period.

The four-time Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) champions had failed to win any of their last six games and suffered the humiliation of failing to qualify for the 2025 AFCON.

This poor run of form had turned many Ghanaians against the team. However, with the possibility of a 2026 World Cup ticket on the horizon, the team staged a remarkable resurgence, securing crucial points against Chad and Madagascar to boost their chances of qualifying for the tournament.

Speaking on Sports Check on GhanaWeb TV, Sarpong attributed this turnaround to President Mahama’s initiative to realign the country’s priorities.

“The new head of state, Mahama, said we have to reset Ghana. When we are resetting Ghana, and the Black Stars are also part of the resetting agenda, then I think the resetting is working,” he stated.

Sarpong also praised Mahama’s decision to visit the team at their training camp, suggesting that it played a key role in motivating their improved performance.

“For him to even talk to them on the pitch, for some years, heads of state didn’t come and talk to the players. It was Rawlings who used to do that, and Mahama took it up. It boosted their performance and gave them morale,” he added.

The two victories mean the Black Stars currently sit first in their group standings with 15 points after six games, three points ahead of second-place Comoros.

Ex-PMMC Boss Questions GoldBod Decision

0

Nana Akwasi Awuah

The decision by the Mahama-led National Democratic Congress (NDC) administration to cancel the licences of mining companies in the country has caught fire.

It follows the widespread condemnation of the seeming wholesale decision.

Latest to add his voice to the issue is the immediate past Managing Director of the then state-run Precious Minerals Marketing Company (PMMC), which has now been changed to the GoldBod, Nana Akwasi Awuah.

In a statement, Mr. Awuah who is a lawyer by profession, acknowledged what he called sweeping changes being made to the downstream sector of the country’s gold industry.

He, however, noted that, “while these changes may generally be well-intended in tandem with the objectives of the new Gold Board Act, I am afraid some of them have the potential to significantly hurt the industry and its players.”

“It is worthy to note that the small scale sector or ASM gold as some would like to call it, contributes about 40% of the overall gold output in Ghana,” he observed.

For him, “that is a very significant contribution which makes it compelling to handle that sector with great tact and sensitivity.”

That, he said was because “the downstream sector of Artisanal and Small-Scale Mining (ASM) employs millions of Ghanaians with various players of different capacities along the value chain.”

He insisted that, “the wholesale cancellation of licences, as captured in the said press release, appears insensitive to the many people who paid for and were issued with licences under the previous law.”

Mr. Awuah said he was expecting some transitional provisions or administrative measures to regularise existing licence holders in order to save jobs and livelihoods of Ghanaians, but rather there was no such thing.

He, therefore, expressed fear over the many job losses and the effect the new law will have on Ghanaians and the economy in the coming days.

That notwithstanding, the former PMMC boss, extended his best wishes to, “the new GoldBod and humbly encourage it to execute its mandate in a way that promotes the industry to ensure that it thrives and continues to maintain its significant contributions to our dear nation.”

Even a successful removal of the Chief Justice won’t fix the perception of bias for the courts – Dr Pumpuni Asante

“The real issue lies in unchecked administrative powers and the lack of limits on Supreme Court appointments. Legislative reform should be the way forward and the opportunity to pursue it is now,” he wrote in an article.

The Director of Policy Engagement and Partnerships at the Ghana Center for Democratic Development (CDD-Ghana), Dr Kojo Pumpuni Asante, has stated that since 2013, cases before the Supreme Court have become increasingly politicized, especially due to election petitions.

Ghana’s chieftaincy institution at risk

Convener of the Kwahu Forum for Truth Mr. Kofi Boahen Dankwa Convener of the Kwahu Forum for Truth Mr. Kofi Boahen Dankwa

The convener of the Kwahu Forum for Truth, Kofi Boahen Dankwa, has warned that Ghana’s chieftaincy institution is at risk of descending into chaos if the ongoing traditional coup d’état in Kwahu is not halted immediately.

According to the Kwahu Forum for Truth, the purported destoolment of the Kwahumanhene, Daasebre Akuamoah Agyapong II, and the subsequent installation of a rival chief without following customary and lawful procedures is an affront to the chieftaincy institution.

This action could lead to mayhem if left unchecked.

“This customary coup d’état must not stand. It threatens to erode the sanctity of chieftaincy across Ghana. If such unlawful actions are tolerated, no traditional area will be safe from similar desecration. We must all rise, in dignity and unity, to reject this daylight robbery of our heritage,” the convener of the Kwahu Forum for Truth stated in a press release.

The press statement, signed by Kofi Boahen Dankwa, called on the state and the people of Kwahu to uphold the dignity of their ancestors by defending the truth and shielding the sacred stool from the stains of corruption.

“This illegal occupation is not merely an affront to Daasebre; it is a sacrilegious assault on Kwahu tradition itself. No charges have been filed against the Omanhene before the Judicial Committee of the Eastern Regional House of Chiefs, which is the only legally sanctioned body that can rule on chieftaincy matters. There has been no customary destoolment, no hearings, no summons, nothing.

“Yet, through misinformation campaigns on social media and calculated public deception, this imposter seeks to convince the world that Daasebre has been deposed. The truth, however, is unshakable: Daasebre Akuamoah Agyapong II remains the only legally and customarily recognized Omanhene of the Kwahu Traditional Area,” the statement reads.

Boahen Dankwa also highlighted that the self-styled new Omanhene, who lacks a legitimate claim, ancestral entitlement, and customary endorsement, has unlawfully taken over the Esono Gyimah Mampong Agyei Palace in Abene.

He has surrounded himself with armed guards, causing fear, confusion, and division in a land that has always stood united.

He commended Daasebre Akuamoah Agyapong II for his leadership, maturity, and decision to choose the path of peace rather than violence amid the extreme provocation, betrayal, and brazen lawlessness in Kwahu.

“He has refused to engage in violence or retaliation. Instead, he has placed his trust in the rule of law, opting to let the judiciary address the illegality. This decision has not been easy. The occupation of his palace, the sacred seat of Kwahu—cuts really deep. The people of Abene are anxious, dejected, and unsettled. But Daasebre has remained calm, patient, and resolute. He has heard the cries of his people and has initiated the necessary legal proceedings to challenge the imposter’s actions,” Kofi Boahen Dankwa noted.

The convener of the Kwahu Forum for Truth emphasised that the patience of the Kwahu people is not weakness, but strength and a commitment to justice, not vengeance. It is a commitment to tradition, not thuggery.

Ghana Pushes For Local Vaccine Manufacturing As GAVI Support Ends 2030

The Chief Executive Officer of the National Vaccine Institute, Dr. Sodzi Sodzi Tetteh, has stressed the crucial need for local vaccine manufacturing in Ghana, particularly as the country prepares to transition from Global Alliance for Vaccine Initiatives (GAVI) support by 2030.

“GAVI currently covers approximately 80% of the costs and distribution of vaccines for Ghana’s Immunisation Programmes,” Dr. Tetteh explained. “However, once Ghana reaches middle-income status, it will no longer be eligible for this support.”

Dr. Tetteh made these remarks during a working visit to the University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS), accompanied by representatives from the German Development Corporation (GIZ), UNIDO, and the European Union.

He highlighted UHAS’s vital role in vaccine development, praising the university’s significant progress in establishing a laboratory, simulation centre, and a team dedicated to vaccine research and development.

Dr. Tetteh urged funding agencies and relevant institutions to increase their investment in UHAS to help advance Ghana’s vaccine production goals.

“The progress made by UHAS so far is impressive,” Dr. Tetteh said. “I hope more funders will come together to support UHAS, enabling them to take their efforts to the next level.”

Professor Lydia Aziato, Vice Chancellor of UHAS, noted that while the university has the human resource capacity to undertake research and develop vaccines, it lacks the necessary logistics. She thus appealed for support to expand the university’s vaccine research and development capacity, which would help secure Ghana’s vaccine self-sufficiency.

She further noted that such support would enable researchers to transfer their knowledge to younger generations before retiring, as most of them are nearing the end of their service.

Ghana bans foreigners from local gold trading

0

Ghana has officially barred all foreign nationals from participating in its local gold trading market from April 30, 2025.

This follows the enactment of a new law earlier this month that grants exclusive authority of gold mining to a new state body, the Ghana Gold Board.

In a statement, the Board’s spokesperson, Prince Kwame Minkah said all foreigners are hereby notified to exit the local gold trading market, not later than 30th April, 2025.

The decision comes on the heels of a new mining law enacted earlier this month, which grants exclusive regulatory authority over the gold sector to a newly-established state agency, the Ghana Gold Board, known as GoldBod.

Prince Kwame Minkah, GoldBod spokesperson, in a statement, said during this period, gold transactions would only be carried out in Ghanaian cedis, the local currency, and priced based on the Bank of Ghana rates.

“‘All foreigners are hereby notified to exit the local gold trading market not later than April 30, 2025,” Prince Minkah said in a statement issued on Monday.

Also, GoldBod warned that “it shall constitute a punishable offence for a person to purchase or deal in gold in the country without a licence issued by the new board.”

Similarly, the government has allocated $279 million (£212) to the new body to purchase and export at least three tonnes of gold per week.

The Ghana Gold Board is expected to be fully operational by May 2025, with plans to digitize gold transactions, formalize small-scale mining, and regulate gold exports.

Ghana is Africa’s largest gold producer and the sixth largest in the world, but it is struggling to address widespread illegal gold mining.

President John Dramani Mahama President John Dramani Mahama

President John Dramani Mahama has described the newly launched One Million Coders Program, introduced on Wednesday, April 16, 2025, as a key initiative for transforming Ghana’s digital economy.

According to the President, the initiative, spearheaded by the Ministry of Communication, Digital Technology, and Innovation, will position Ghana as a leader in the global tech space.

Speaking at the launch, President Mahama highlighted the importance of the program, which aims to train one million Ghanaians in essential digital and coding skills over the coming years.

He emphasised that the program, a core part of the National Democratic Congress (NDC)’s 2024 campaign promise, is not merely political rhetoric but a strategic effort toward economic development.

President Mahama stated that the initiative forms part of the government’s broader blueprint to reset the economy through technology and innovation.

“We are not just launching a program, we are laying the foundation for a blue economy. We are declaring, with bold purpose, that Ghana is ready to lead in the digital age. We are telling our youth, our communities, our continent, and the world that the future is here, and we will be part of shaping it. This is not just a fulfilled promise; it is a strategic pillar in our Reset Ghana agenda, designed to equip Ghanaians with critical digital skills for 21st-century life and work,” he said.

Six Ghanaian artistes who ‘fell off’ after a few hit songs

0

From L to R: Imrana, Wisa Greid, Atom Reloaded, AY Poyoo, and Edoh Yat From L to R: Imrana, Wisa Greid, Atom Reloaded, AY Poyoo, and Edoh Yat

Staying consistent in the music industry is the ultimate goal for every artiste.

However, over the years, music lovers have witnessed several artistes rise to fame with hit songs, only to fade away shortly after topping local and international charts.

This article highlights six Ghanaian artistes whose careers stalled after achieving initial success with one or two hit songs.

1. Atom Reloaded

In 2015, Ghanaian artiste Atom Reloaded gained nationwide recognition with his smash hit “Y3 Wo Krom”, which featured Jhunea.

The song was so popular it was even adopted by tech giant Apple Inc. for a conference.

Following the success of the song, Atom stated that he didn’t need management for his career.

Subsequently, in 2018, he was spotted at the church premises of popular pastor Rev. Obofour, reportedly seeking spiritual help to revive his career.

Since then, Atom Reloaded has not produced another notable hit.

2. Wisa Greid

Eugene Ashie, known in showbiz as Wisa Greid, once dominated the airwaves with hits like “Ekiki Mi”, “Mintse Bo”, and “Cocoa” around 2017.

However, his career hit the rocks after he publicly exposed himself on stage during the ‘Decemba 2 Rememba’ concert.

In 2018, he admitted that the incident had severely damaged his career. Although he attempted a comeback in 2023 with a remix of “Ekiki Mi” featuring Sarkodie, Wisa has struggled to regain his prominence.

3. Dead Peepol

Music duo Dead Peepol burst onto the scene with their 2020 viral hit “Otan Hunu”, which earned them the ‘Best Group of the Year’ at the 2021 3Music Awards.

The remix featured big names like Fameye, Kuami Eugene, and Medikal.

Despite the buzz around “Otan Hunu”, the duo has not been able to replicate that success, with subsequent releases failing to make significant waves.

4. Imrana

Young artiste Imrana made a strong debut in 2020 with his hit “Imagine Say”. The song earned him industry attention, but his momentum slowed down soon after.

Imrana later revealed dissatisfaction with his label, Midas Touch, claiming they failed to deliver on promises.

Since then, he has released tracks like “Wonka” and “Crisis”, but none have matched the success of his debut hit.

5. Edoh Yat

Prince Edoh Mawugbe Kudifor, popularly known as Edoh Yat, shot to fame with his 2020 hit single “Wind”.

The track at that time gained him massive recognition.

Although he followed up with songs like “Awake”, “Broken”, “Abena”, and “Day Turn Night”, none have been able to capture the same level of attention and success as “Wind”.

6. AY Poyoo

Known for his comedic flair and eccentric personality, Emmanuel Yeboah, aka AY Poyoo, gained viral fame with his hit “Goat”.

In 2024, AY Poyoo disclosed that his career suffered a major blow when his entire music catalogue was removed from streaming platforms due to a dispute with his former management, Aborga Records.

Since parting ways with the label in March 2024, he has attempted to revive his career with songs like “Alfa Hour”, “Push”, and “Akua Donkor”, although with limited success.

Watch as AG arrives in court to hear injunction application against CJ removal

Justice Srem-Sae (L) and Dr Dominic Ayine (R) Justice Srem-Sae (L) and Dr Dominic Ayine (R)

The Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Dr Dominic Ayine, has arrived at the Supreme Court for the hearing of the injunction against the removal of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkonoo.

This hearing follows a no show on April 9, which ended in an indefinite adjournment of the hearing for the application aimed at halting the prima facie case determination in the Chief Justice’s impending impeachment process.

The case, filed by Old Tafo Member of Parliament, Vincent Ekow Assafuah, was scheduled to be heard on Wednesday, April 9.

However, the Supreme Court adjourned the case indefinitely due to the unavailability of state attorneys because they were attending an ECOWAS Court representation training.

Godfred Yeboah Dame, a former Attorney General and counsel for plaintiff, expressed dissatisfaction with the development, stating that it suggested a disregard for the rule of law.

“I find it quite odd for him to say that state attorneys are at a conference and for that matter all the cases in the country should be adjourned. He’s not a state attorney he could not come to court in a case as important as the removal of the Chief Justice; he couldn’t come or extend the courtesy to the court by attending… And what makes it even more odd that they sent state attorneys, not even one but two to inform the court that they’re attending a conference and that they couldn’t attend… I find it as a confirmation of their disregard for the rule of law,” Dame told the media.

But the team are back in court on Wednesday, April 16, 2025, for the hearing.

GhanaWeb will provide updates in subsequent stories on the website.

The Minister of Labour, Jobs and Employment, Dr Rashid Pelpuo, officially dispatched the first batch of Ghanaian youth selected under the Work Abroad Program to South Korea.

The initiative, originally arranged before Dr Pelpuo assumed office, aims to create meaningful employment opportunities for Ghanaian youth in the shipping industry abroad.

As minister, Dr Pelpuo oversaw the final phases of the deployment process, including the issuance of relevant licenses and authorisations needed to facilitate the beneficiaries’ travel and employment.

In his address to the departing recruits, Dr Pelpuo reassured them of the Government of Ghana’s ongoing support and protection throughout their employment journey in Korea. He urged them to seize the opportunity not only to build careers and earn competitive salaries but also to plan towards investments back home, such as housing and small businesses.

The beneficiaries expressed deep appreciation to the minister and the government for making their dream a reality. Excitement and hope marked the occasion as they prepared to embark on a new chapter of growth and opportunity.

This effort aligns with the broader employment vision of President John Dramani Mahama, whose leadership continues to prioritise youth empowerment, job creation, and international labour partnerships.

Football fans divided over Real Madrid’s chances of a comeback against Arsenal

Some Ghanaian football fans are divided over Real Madrid’s chances of overturning the deficit against Arsenal at the Santiago Bernabeu on Wednesday, April 16, 2025.

On Tuesday, April 8, 2025, Arsenal delivered a shocking 3-0 victory in the first leg of the Champions League quarter-finals, significantly boosting their chances of qualifying for the semi-finals.

Despite Arsenal’s 3-0 lead, Real Madrid’s pedigree in the tournament means they still have a chance of advancing.

During GhanaWeb TV’s Sports Debate, fans shared their expectations for the game.

Many backed the Spanish giants to pull off a famous comeback, while others remained skeptical.

Some argue that Real Madrid’s history of remarkable comebacks demonstrates their ability to overturn the deficit.

No one can block Mahama’s constitutional duty – Dr. Ayine fires back

0

Legal fireworks have erupted over former President John Mahama’s controversial consultation process regarding Ghana’s next Chief Justice, with Attorney General Dr. Dominic Ayine strongly pushing back against Attorney General Godfred Dame’s call for a halt.

Speaking to the media after court proceedings, Dr. Ayine, who represents the former president in the matter, firmly defended Mahama’s right to proceed with the ongoing consultation, insisting that it is a constitutionally mandated duty that cannot be halted by anyone, not even the Attorney General.

AG dismisses calls to suspend Chief Justice removal process

0

Attorney General and Minister for Justice, Dr. Dominic Ayine, has dismissed calls for President John Dramani Mahama to suspend ongoing proceedings related to the determination of a prima facie case on petitions seeking the removal of the Chief Justice.

His comments followed yet another adjournment by the Supreme Court in a case seeking to halt the President and the Council of State from moving forward with the process.

The adjournment was due to the absence of one of the five Justices presiding over the case, His Lordship Samuel Asiedu. Explaining the situation, Presiding Judge Her Ladyship Henrietta Mensah Bonsu said the Court had encountered “problems and for unavoidable reasons have to adjourn.”

The injunction application—filed by lawyer and plaintiff Godfred Yeboah Dame—aims to prevent the President from continuing with the petition review until the Supreme Court rules on the matter.

Speaking to the media after the adjournment, Dr. Ayine argued that the President is constitutionally bound to proceed with the process, regardless of the pending court application.

“He has applied to the court, and the court is yet to make an order. So, if he is saying that the court must hold on? Is he saying that the court has already granted an order in respect of which the president must not continue the process?” Dr. Ayine questioned.

He further emphasised that no legal basis exists to stop the President from performing his constitutional duties.

“He must understand that it is the constitutional duty, and the law is very clear that you cannot enjoin the performance or conduct of a public communication,” he added.

Nonetheless, a combination of factors, including a young, upwardly-mobile, english-speaking and political stability, are adding to Ghana’s appeal. “Ghana has all the attributes of a favorable destination for BPO services—political stability, English as the first language, a high percentage of university graduates, and a strategic location in Africa. AIDEC’s investment in this sector demonstrates confidence in our ability to compete globally,” David Gowu, CEO of Business Outsourcing Services Association Ghana (BOSAG) explained.

The AIDEC Digital Hub offers a diverse range of services including inbound and outbound call center operations and customer support; data entry, processing, and analytics; AI and business intelligence solutions as well as E-learning, IT training, and ISO certification. Others include IT and software development support; digital marketing and content management.

Emmanuel Gbeve, Chief Technology Officer of AIDEC, highlighted the center’s technical capabilities and regulatory compliance, stating: “We have secured authorisation from the Cyber Security Authority and implemented robust security measures to ensure we meet international standards for data protection and service delivery.”

A central focus of the AIDEC Digital Hub is addressing youth unemployment through job creation and skills development. The facility will provide employment opportunities for graduates and IT professionals while offering specialised training programmes in digital customer relations, IT support, and digital marketing. “BOSAGhave an ambitious five-year target of creating one million jobs in the BPO sector and companies like AIDEC will be leading this initiative to provide meaningful employment for young people,” Mr. Gowu stated.

The BPO center represents the latest development in AIDEC’s evolution since 2020, which has included establishing Ghana’s first AI Center of Excellence. Since 2021, AIDEC Digital has steadily expanded its footprint in Ghana’s tech ecosystem, beginning with the Africa Digital Forum and Tech Engineers Roundtable in Accra. In 2022, it sponsored the Technovate Awards and Fair to honor tech innovators across Africa.

The following year, it launched Africoursity (MOOC) and AIDECIA (ERP), both SaaS-based platforms, alongside a 30-seater Tech Lab for IT training and Ghana’s first AI Centre of Excellence for research. In 2024, AIDEC Academy was established to enhance IT education, followed by Tech NewsGlobal for technology updates. The stakeholders agreed that the success of Ghana’s BPO sector hinges on collaboration across the technology ecosystem. The establishment of BOSAG in November 2024 represents a strategic move to position Ghana as Africa’s premier BPO destination.

“This is not about competition; it is about collaboration. We need to work together to push this conversation forward and help businesses understand the potential of the BPO industry,” Kafui Amanfu, Executive Director of the Institute of ICT Professionals Ghana (IIPGH) noted.

Isaac Newton Acquah, National Project Coordinator for Ghana’s Tech Sector at the International Trade Centre, added: “It is going to be centers with excellence and experience, with BOSAG and IIPGH coming together as a community, that will allow us to lobby government locally and internationally to move the IT/BPO sector forward.”

Ecobank Look-Alike Suit: Does Sarkodie have a case?

0

Following reports that Ghanaian rapper Sarkodie has taken legal action against Ecobank Ghana for allegedly using a look-alike image of him in an advertisement without his consent, a wave of debate has sparked across social media platforms.

Many are asking the question: Does Sarkodie have a solid legal case?

To provide legal insight, Intellectual Property (IP) lawyer, Emmanuel Kantam Duut Esq., has shared some insights on the situation in an exclusive interview with GhanaWeb.

What the law says about image rights in Ghana

According to Duut, while Ghana has existing copyright and trademark laws, explicit legislation addressing image rights or likeness is currently absent.

“This is a very new course of action in Ghana. We’ve never seen such a case in our courts. Image rights, publicity rights, and privacy rights are not yet part of Ghana’s established legal framework. But this could be a pivotal opportunity to test and expand intellectual property law in the country,” he stated.

The Image vs. likeness dilemma

A critical aspect of the case hinges on whether the advertisement in question used Sarkodie’s actual image or simply someone who resembles him.

To build a viable legal argument, it must first be determined whether Ecobank used Sarkodie’s image or his likeness.

According to Duut, Ghana’s current intellectual property laws offer limited avenues for addressing such a situation.

The two most relevant areas are copyright and, by extension, image rights. Under copyright law, image rights may be implicated when someone uses a person’s image or likeness without consent.

“In the image which was indicated in Ecobank’s ad, it is very clear that that is not Sarkodie. Yes, it is very, very clear that that is not Sarkodie. So now you are not dwelling on the image of Sarkodie in this regard, whereupon Sarkodie can make very strong claims that indeed his image was used.

“But we are looking at the likeness of Sarkodie. So there’s an image or there’s a figure that seems to look like him, and it is based on that that he’s making the case against Ecobank,” Duut explained.

According to Duut, since the image used was not of Sarkodie himself but rather someone presumed to be his look-alike, Sarkodie’s legal team would need to argue that the individual in the advertisement indeed bears a recognizable resemblance to the artiste.

“When a celebrity’s likeness is used in a commercial context, it refers to the exploitation of their recognisable appearance, which can include facial features, expressions, or overall persona,” Duut said.

The key legal phrase here is “recognisable appearance”.

The court must determine whether the person depicted in the Ecobank ad evokes Sarkodie’s image to a degree that the public would reasonably associate it with him.

“Sarkodie would have to leave evidence, sufficient evidence to prove that there was a resemblance or there is a resemblance between the images being used in the ad to such an extent that it expresses the recognisable appearance of Sarkodie,” he said.

Ecobank’s possible defence

The bank’s advertisement carried the tagline “Looks can be deceiving.”

Given that no actual image of Sarkodie was used, and the ad did not explicitly state that the individual portrayed was meant to represent him, can the bank argue that it bears no liability?

“If they are trying to communicate to you that the image that you are looking at is not what you think it is, that means that by optical illusion, they have already drawn your attention to the likeness of the original image they are seeking to leverage upon to create the art,” Duut said.

By using a look-alike, the bank may be indirectly prompting viewers to associate the individual in the ad with the original person, potentially Sarkodie.

Therefore, Ecobank would need to argue that the person featured in the advertisement does not, in fact, resemble Sarkodie to a degree that would cause such an association.

“The first question that comes up is why, when you look at that image, what comes to mind, or who comes to mind when you look at the image? The foremost figure that comes to mind is the figure they are trying to tell you that the image isn’t. So if that is the figure they are trying to tell you that image they are projecting isn’t, then that means that there’s a high possibility that what they have expressed is a likeness of that figure. And that is what it means,” he said.

He added, “When you look at the hair, when you look at the beard, when you look at the polls, when you look at the face, does that constitute a recognisable appearance of Sarkodie?

“That is what would have to be determined by the court, and that is what Sarkodie would need compelling or sufficient evidence towards. On the other hand, the lawyers of Ecobank would also have to counter that “It doesn’t even look like Sarkodie.”

In summary

Sarkodie’s case seeks to break new ground in Ghana’s legal landscape and could set a precedent for how celebrity image and likeness rights are handled in the country.

The court’s decision may eventually come down to whether the public perceives the image used by Ecobank as a recognizable representation or misrepresentation of the rapper.

Sarkodie would need to demonstrate that the image used in the advertisement is indeed a look-alike of him, while the bank would be tasked with proving that the individual portrayed does not bear enough resemblance to be considered his likeness.

‘Let’s build a people-led salt and fishing industry in Ketu South’ – Journalist calls on lands minister

0

A broadcast journalist, Francis Vorsah, has called on the Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, to adopt a community-driven model proposed by Third World Network-Africa, which puts control of salt resources in locals and ensures women benefit directly in the Ketu South Municipality.

He noted that collectively they can build a public-led, community-partnered salt and fish farming industry that protects the environment, grows local businesses, and brings peace and prosperity to Ketu South.

The broadcast journalist stated that communities along the Keta Lagoon such as Adina, Amutinu, Agbozume, Salakope, Blekusu to Sonuto, through Kpedzakope, Agbevekope to Tokon have depended on salt mining, fishing, and coconut farming for decades and cannot be taken away from them.

The activities have over the years become the backbone of the local economy and a source of livelihood for women and youth but has since been taken over by the industrial salt operations at Adina rising tensions in the area, he stated.

“The industrial salt operations at Adina have taken over the lagoon, restricted access to land, water, and disrupted the very livelihoods that built these communities. Tensions never cease to rise,” he said.

In his open letter to the minister, and made available to GhanaWeb, Vorsah outlined possible ways that can help reduce the tensions within the communities to help address the issues for peace and stability.

He also called for a review in the current salt concession and place the lagoon under a people-first development framework, making recommendations on taking lessons from countries like Bolivia, where communities, not corporations, benefit from natural resources.

Also, he proposed that there should be the involvement of chiefs, the assembly, local producers, and experts to regulate and promote sustainable production.

The broadcast journalist further called for a blend of salt mining and fish farming to support livelihoods to enhance proper zoning and investment for increased employment and food supply.

“Hon Minister, I am not against salt mining. I am for a fair, inclusive model that leaves no one behind. Let’s protect the people. Let’s grow the local economy. Let’s turn Ketu South into a national model for peaceful, productive resource use” he concluded.

Read his full letter below:

OPEN LETTER TO HON. EMMANUEL ARMAH-KOFI BUAH, MINISTER FOR LANDS AND NATURAL RESOURCES: LET’S BUILD A PEOPLE-LED SALT AND FISHING INDUSTRY IN KETU SOUTH

Dear Hon. Minister,

The communities along the Keta Lagoon such as Adina, Amutinu, Agbozume, Salakope. From Blekusu to Sonuto through Kpedzakope, Agbevekope to Tokon have for decades depended on salt mining, fishing, and coconut farming.

These are not just activities; they are the backbone of our local economy and a source of livelihood for women and youth.

But today, industrial salt operations at Adina have taken over the lagoon, restricted access to land and water, and disrupted the very livelihoods that built these communities. Tensions never cease to rise.

Hon. Minister, there is a better way.

We can build a public-led, community-partnered salt and fish farming industry that protects the environment, grows local businesses, and brings peace and prosperity to Ketu South.

I propose the following:

1. Review the current salt concession and place the lagoon under a people-first development framework. Let’s take lessons from countries like Bolivia where communities, not corporations, benefit from natural resources.

2. Set up a Keta Lagoon Salt & Aquaculture Committee involving chiefs, the Assembly, local producers, and experts to regulate and promote sustainable production.

3. Adopt the community-driven model proposed by Third World Network-Africa, which puts control of salt resources in local hands and ensures women benefit directly.

4. Blend salt mining with fish farming. Let the lagoon support both livelihoods. It’s possible with proper zoning and investment, this can double our employment and food supply.

5. Support training, tools, and access to markets so our youth and women can thrive in salt and aquaculture, and the Assembly can earn the revenue it needs to develop our towns.

Hon. Minister, I am not against salt mining. I am for a fair, inclusive model that leaves no one behind. Let’s protect the people. Let’s grow the local economy. Let’s turn Ketu South into a national model for peaceful, productive resource use.

Channel IMF funds into agriculture to reset economy – Economist to government

Business strategist and financial analyst, Dr Daniel Armateye Anim Business strategist and financial analyst, Dr Daniel Armateye Anim

Business strategist and financial analyst, Dr Daniel Armateye Anim, has backed the government’s decision to prioritise agriculture in the 2025 budget, emphasizing its potential to reset the economy.

Commenting on the expected US$370 million from the International Monetary Fund (IMF), Dr Anim stated that directing these funds into agricultural projects could be a game changer.

Ghana and the IMF reached a staff-level agreement on Tuesday, April 15, 2025, following a review of the country’s progress on key policy reforms and economic targets.

This agreement paves the way for the release of a US$370 million tranche.

The Minister of Finance, Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, following the agreement, revealed that the funds would be directed toward resetting the economy in line with President Mahama’s economic vision.

In an interview with GhanaWeb Business, Dr Anim highlighted the importance of this strategic move in stabilising the economy.

He advised the government to prioritise the country’s agricultural sector using the incoming funds to improve living standards, boost food sustainability, and create jobs along the agribusiness value chain.

“The 2025 budget aims to reset the economy with agriculture as a key driver. If that is the case, then allocating the expected $370 million from the IMF to agricultural projects could significantly enhance food sustainability, create business opportunities, and generate employment along the agribusiness value chain,” he said.

He added, “This strategic move can help stabilize the economy and significantly improve the living standards of the youth.”

Paramilitaries declare rival government in Sudan

0

More than 12 million people have been driven from their homes over the two-year conflict More than 12 million people have been driven from their homes over the two-year conflict

Sudan’s paramilitaries have declared the formation of a rival government to the country’s armed forces, two years into a war that has become the world’s largest humanitarian crisis.

The leader of the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), Mohamed Hamdan “Hemedti” Dagalo, said the group was “building the only realistic future for Sudan”.

The announcement came as London hosted an high-level conference to mark the second anniversary of the conflict, where the UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy called for “a pathway to peace”.

Fighting raged on, with the army saying it had bombed RSF positions outside the city of el-Fasher, forcing hundreds of thousands to flee the Zamzam refugee camp.

Hemedti said the RSF was building a “state of law” and not a state ruled by individuals.

“We do not seek domination, but unity. We believe that no tribe, region, or religion holds a monopoly over Sudanese identity,” his statement on Telegram read.

He added that his government would provide essential services such as education and healthcare to not only RSF-controlled areas, but the whole country.

More than 400 people have been killed in recent attacks by the RSF, according to the UN, citing “credible sources”.

Two years into the war, both the army and RSF have been accused of war crimes, including genocide and mass sexual violence.

Hemedti has been locked in a power struggle with Sudan’s army chief, Gen Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, since 15 April 2023, creating a humanitarian crisis that has claimed more than 150,000 lives and displaced more than 12 million people.

The latest fighting in the capital of North Darfur, el-Fasher, has forced tens of thousands of civilians from the Zamzam refugee camp to walk 70km (43 miles) to the town of Tawila, according to medical charity MSF.

Many arrived severely dehydrated and some children are reported to have died of thirst.

Humanitarian agencies have reported famine-like conditions facing more than 700,000 people in temporary camps around el-Fasher, with security threats and roadblocks thwarting the delivery of critical aid.

During an international meeting on Tuesday, the UK promised an extra £120m ($159m) worth of food and medical assistance, urging the world not to turn its back on Sudan.

“Many have given up on Sudan – that is wrong – it’s morally wrong when we see so many civilians beheaded, infants as young as one subjected to sexual violence, more people facing famine than anywhere else in the world… We simply cannot look away,” Lammy said.

The conference also called for an immediate and permanent ceasefire, but the African Union has said it will not allow the country to be partitioned by the army and the RSF.

The 2024 Running mate to NPP flagbearer Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh says he has no intention of contesting for office in the 2028 elections.

The declaration comes ahead of a National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in Accra, where key party decisions are expected to be discussed.

Speaking to journalists on the sidelines of a party engagement, Napo, as he is affectionately called, dismissed growing speculation that he was positioning himself for a future presidential bid.

According to him, ensuring the unity of the party is paramount and is committed seeing that through.

Supreme Court adjourns injunction case on CJ’s removal to May 6

0

The Supreme Court has adjourned again, hearing of the application seeking to injunct the President and Council of State from determining whether there is a prima facie case in the petitions seeking the removal of the Chief Justice.

One of the five Justices presiding over the case, His Lordship Samuel Asiedu, was absent when the case was called. Presiding Judge, Her Ladyship Henrietta Mensah Bonsu, explained that they “have had problems and for unavoidable reasons have to adjourn.”

She thus adjourned the case to May 6.

Meanwhile, Attorney General Dr. Dominic Ayine has rejected calls for President John Dramani Mahama to hold on to proceedings for the determination of a Prima Facie case on the petitions for the removal of the Chief Justice.

This is in response to a statement by Godfred Yeboah Dame, the plaintiff’s lawyer in the case challenging the processes for the determination of the prima facie, that the President is enjoined by the injunction filed to halt all proceedings relating to the petition.

In an interview with the press on Wednesday, April 16, after court proceedings, Dr. Dominic Ayine argued that the President cannot be enjoined from undertaking his constitutional duty.

Dr Serebour shares challenges of doctors working at Bawku

0

President of the Ghana Medical Association, Dr Frank Serebour President of the Ghana Medical Association, Dr Frank Serebour

The President of the Ghana Medical Association, (GMA) Dr Frank Serebour, has disclosed that medical doctors working at Bawku are grappling with extreme emotional stress, fear of being attacked and stress leading to widespread absenteeism.

Speaking in a recent interview on JoyNews, he noted that the situation had drastically affected healthcare delivery in the area.

“The doctors work under extreme emotional stress and fear. If you speak to them, you realise that most of them are not themselves and they will tell you that their output has really gone down. So, what is happening is that for some of them, even going to work is a problem.

“Absenteeism is something that is very much rife and a few of them have decided to leave. So, we have some who have left, and they are currently in Accra, in Kumasi and they are refusing to go back. What is also happening is that there are some of them who are in administrative positions, and they are unable to enforce any discipline,” he remarked.

Dr Serebour cited instances where some hospital administrators seeking to enforce discipline were targeted.

“If a worker doesn’t come to work and you decide that you even want to take this priority action against the worker, the next day, your photograph is plastered all over and you are threatened that if you don’t take care, you’ll be the next target. We’ve had doctors whose homes have been raided and riddled with bullets and so they have to seek police protection.

“In the past, Bawku used to be one of the places where regardless of even the issues doctors were accepting postings, but recently nobody’s agreeing to accept any postings,” he remarked.

The president of GMA further disclosed that some medical doctors had fled the town due to the ongoing conflict.

“As of last month, we have two doctors who have left, one is now in Accra. At the moment he is jobless because we’ve not been able to secure posting for him at the moment.

“Some have decided to move their families away whilst they are still there delivering service,” he added.

The protracted conflict in the area has claimed several lives, threatening socio-economic development in the Upper East Region.

‘Let Communities Benefit From Your Mining Operations’

0

Collins Dauda

The Parliamentary Select Committee on Land and Natural Resources has urged mining companies to ensure communities in which they operate benefit from their mining operations.

Chairman of the committee, Alhaji Collins Dauda, the MP for Asutifi South, made this statement when the committee toured Newmont Ahafo South and North mining sites to acquaint themselves with the operations of the mines.

The two-day tour organised by the Chamber of Mines allowed members to have firsthand knowledge of various operations of the mine, see various corporate social responsibility projects and ask probe issues of concern.

On the first day, the members toured Newmont Ahafo South Mine (Kenyasi), where the mine has been operating for almost 20 years. They were briefed on various stages of operations and visited pits and reclaimed lands where mining activities took place but are now covered by green vegetation.

At Ahafo North (Terchire, Adrogbaa), where mine construction is still ongoing and commercial gold production is expected to begin in the second half of 2025, members observed various installation activities and expressed satisfaction and appreciation for the heavy capital investment.

They were informed that the Ahafo project has an expected life span of 14 years but has the potential to go beyond.

Addressing the management and staff of the company after the tour, Mr. Dauda, urged the company to make job creation a priority for the youth.

‘The people expect to see development, so create jobs for the youth. In all your operations, don’t forget about job creation. He further urged the company to ensure the provision of more social amenities such as roads, adding, ‘Some of the roads we have seen are in bad shape. You must help improve the state of the roads.

We don’t want to see Kenyasi become like Obuasi and Tarkwa. It cannot be business as usual, so I entreat you to provide development for the people because this is the only way they can benefit from their natural resources,” he added.

Briefing the committee members, General Manager of Ahafo North, Charles Bissue explained that all five affected communities under Ahafo North, including Sosuanso, Terchire, and Adrogbaa, among others, are all benefitting from the same social responsibility projects under NADeF (Newmont Ahafo Development Foundation), saying resettlement housing units are currently under construction.

A member of the committee, Samuel Atta-Mills, MP for Kommenda Edina Eguafo Abrem, expressed satisfaction with the knowledge gained, saying it will inform them on issues affecting mining when it comes to bills concerning mining companies in Parliament.

High demand for gold driving investor interest – Dr Manteaw

0

Co-Chair of the Ghana Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative, Dr Steve Manteaw Co-Chair of the Ghana Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative, Dr Steve Manteaw

The Co-Chair of the Ghana Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (GHEITI), Dr Steve Manteaw, has revealed that despite the ongoing brouhaha between the government and Gold Fields over the Damang Mine, there is a surge in investor interest in gold mining in the area.

He attributes this to the precious metal’s growing status as a store of value.

According to him, investor interest varies depending on the commodity in question.

He noted that gold has increasingly become a safe haven for investors, regardless of a mine’s geographical location.

Earlier this week, the government rejected the renewal of the Damang Mining Lease for Gold Fields Ghana Limited, citing the mine’s failure to meet the necessary requirements for the lease to be extended upon its April 18, 2025 expiration.

In an exclusive interview with GhanaWeb Business, Dr Manteaw stated that the ongoing disagreement between the government and Gold Fields is unlikely to have any significant impact on the market.

“There is a mad rush for gold, and so, even as the discussions are ongoing and the decision has been made not to renew the lease, I wouldn’t be surprised if other investors have already lined up to take over that mine. Gold is the commodity of the moment.

“Investors now understand that interest depends on the commodity involved, and gold, as I’ve indicated, is in extremely high demand. It has become a reliable store of value in recent times,” he added.

His comments come at a time when Ghana’s mining sector is experiencing shifts in ownership and regulatory changes, driven largely by fluctuating commodity prices and global market trends.

What men can do, women can do better – Stonebwoy eulogises Moily and Amaarae

Ghanaian dancehall musician Stonebwoy has applauded Ghanaian artistes Amaarae and Moily for their outstanding performances over the weekend.

On April 12, 2025, Moily graced the stage at the Reggae Fest concert held at Brooklyn’s Barclays Center, performing alongside Jamaican stars Vybz Kartel, Shenseea, and Skilibeng.

Speaking on this great feat, Stonebwoy was seen praising the two singers for their achievements on these major international stages.

“I see you, Amaarae, killing it at Coachella, and Moily also doing her thing with Vybz Kartel in Brooklyn. They say what men can do, women can do better,” he said.

Stonebwoy is not the only Ghanaian artiste who have applauded Amaarae and Moily.

likes of Efya, Kojo Blak, Sarkodie, and Guru, among others, have also taken to social media to congratulate the two on their remarkable milestones.

“He wanted to turn himself into Okudzeto, but he can never be like Okudzeto” — Kwadwo slams Fordjour

0

According to a report from GhanaWeb, Kwadwo Twum Boafo, a key figure within the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has raised concerns over what he sees as a pattern of persistent criticism from the New Patriotic Party (NPP) directed at the administration of President John Dramani Mahama.

He believes the opposition’s frequent allegations are fueled by a desire to uncover scandals where none exist.

Boafo pointed to the recent controversy involving Airmed as an example, accusing the NPP of making deliberate efforts to discredit the current government.

He called on the opposition party to abandon such tactics, emphasizing that the current leadership has maintained a clean record since assuming office.

Rather than attempting to fabricate wrongdoing, Boafo suggested the NPP should cooperate with the government for the sake of national progress.

In his response to recent accusations made by Reverend John Ntim Fordjour, the MP for Assin South, Boafo dismissed attempts to link the administration to drug trafficking or illegal financial dealings.

He criticized Fordjour’s approach, suggesting it was a failed attempt to imitate the investigative style of North Tongu MP, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, who was known for exposing misconduct during the previous administration.

Boafo challenged Fordjour to take any credible information he may have to the appropriate investigative bodies, including national intelligence and the inter-ministerial security task force.

“He wanted to turn himself into Okudzeto, but he can never be like Okudzeto. He doesn’t have any evidence; all he does is spread scandal,” he said.

He further accused the MP of hiding behind parliamentary privilege to avoid accountability and questioned his willingness to cooperate with law enforcement if summoned.

Tema East NDC appeals to party to intervene in Landing Beach Committee formation

0

By Laudia Sawer

Tema, April 16, GNA – The Tema East Constituency Executive of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has appealed to the party’s national officers to intervene in a misunderstanding regarding the formation of Landing Beach Committees.

A letter signed by Mr Seidu Abdulal, Tema East Constituency Secretary, addressed to the NDC National Chairman, and made available to the Ghana News Agency (GNA), stated that “Your swift intervention in this matter is urgently needed to calm our nerves and assist our brothers.”

It added that the Minister for Fisheries and Aquaculture sent a notice to all members of parliament with fishing activities in their constituencies, asking them to liaise with their constituencies to form Landing Beach Committees and submit the names to her office.

According to the executives, Mr. Isaac Ashia Odamtten, the MP for Tema East, “disregarded the minister’s advice and formed the Landing Beach Committees on his own (suo motu). The constituency secretary petitioned the minister upon hearing that the MP had formed the Landing Beach Committees without informing the constituency.”

It added that the said petition was referred to Mr. Rockson Defeamakpor, the Majority Chief Whip who is also the MP for South Dayi, who subsequently, met the constituency executives and other stakeholders in the fishing industry in Tema East who had not been consulted, including the National Vice Chairman of the Canoe Owners Association of Ghana, on Monday, 24th February 2025.

It added that “In the said meeting, it came to light that the MP did not consult the constituency and the key stakeholders who are involved in fishing in Tema East. It was, however, agreed that the number of landing beaches in the constituency (10 landing beaches) be divided to satisfy both the constituency and the office of the MP. That is, the constituency would take and form five (5) Landing Beach Committees, while the office of the MP would also take and form five (5) Landing Beach Committees.”

The letter added that it was also agreed that both the constituency and the office of the MP would each take one committee to satisfy the nomadic fisherfolks the Fantes, who are involved in fishing in Tema East).

It stated that after the arbitration and agreement with the Majority Chief Whip, the MP expressed dissatisfaction and presented his sharing formula, in which he stated that the constituency would take three landing beaches, and his office would take seven.

“Hon. Defeamakpor again intervened and suggested that we accept the MP’s formula to ensure peace and to make sure our fisherfolks receive fuel to carry out their business.

To our surprise, the MP proceeded to submit 10 Landing Beach Committees instead of the seven he had proposed and submitted the same to the minister without informing the constituency.”

The executives expressed worry that the agitation from the canoe owners and branch executives, whose primary concern was fishing, was becoming unbearable; therefore, their call on the NDC national chairman to swiftly intervene to calm their nerves.

According to them, “The enormity of the excesses of our MP is completely staggering and requires the attention and intervention of the party. In the interim, we respectfully request your indulgence to address the issue of the LBCs with the necessary urgency. At a more opportune time, we will bring to your attention how our MP has weaponised his office and divided the constituency, particularly along tribal lines.”

Accra East ECG Commissions New Feeder At Teshie New England

0

THE ELECTRICITY Company of Ghana (ECG) has commissioned a new 11KV feeder at Teshie New England, a significant step towards enhancing power supply in the Accra East region.

The newly installed feeder is aimed at improving the quality and reliability of power supply, significantly reducing instances of power outages and low voltage that customers in Teshie, Tseaddo, Chain Homes and surrounding areas have been experiencing.

The Accra East Region aims to enhance customer satisfaction and experience through various development projects that address their electricity needs.

The new feeder is part of an initiative to reduce downtime and enhance the overall customer experience in Teshie New England and nearby communities.

Accra East regional Manager of ECG, Bismark Otoo, explained that the construction of the feeder aligns with ECG’s commitment to providing safe, quality, and reliable electricity to consumers.

He indicated that the existing feeder serving the area was overloaded, resulting in frequent outages and low voltage, stating that “with this new feeder, some customers will be transferred to relieve the load on the old one, meaning they will no longer experience frequent outages and low voltages.”

He emphasised that the Accra East Region is dedicated to promoting local economic growth by ensuring stable power supply across the area.

He further stated that the commissioning of the feeder would provide convenience to customers reliant on electricity for their businesses, thereby boosting economic growth in the region.

Mr. Otoo noted that this initiative would also facilitate quicker fault detection and isolation, enabling engineers to restore power swiftly in the event of disruptions.

He mentioned that the Accra East Region has undertaken several projects to improve service delivery and ensure customer satisfaction.

Residents who attended the commissioning event expressed their gratitude for the initiative, highlighting the positive impact it will have on their daily lives.
