This is the best time to persuade Ken Ofori-Atta to return

Martin Kpebu (R) has called on Nana Akufo-Addo (L) to persuade Ken Ofori-Atta Martin Kpebu (R) has called on Nana Akufo-Addo (L) to persuade Ken Ofori-Atta

Private legal practitioner Martin Kpebu has called on former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to intervene and persuade former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta to return to Ghana and face justice.

Speaking on TV3’s The Key Points on Saturday, January 10, 2026, Kpebu said the current situation provides the ideal opportunity for the former president to play a role in resolving the ongoing legal and political controversy surrounding Ofori-Atta.

“This is the best time for us to call on former President Akufo-Addo to prevail on Ken Ofori-Atta to come home and face justice,” Kpebu said.

He stressed that Ofori-Atta, who is wanted in Ghana on multiple corruption-related charges, should confront the allegations directly, rather than prolonging the dispute abroad.

Ofori-Atta has applied to become a US permanent resident through his son – Kpebu claims

Ofori-Atta, who served as Ghana’s Minister of Finance from January 2017 to February 2024 under the New Patriotic Party administration, is currently detained in the United States over immigration-related issues.

Ghanaian authorities had previously requested his extradition in connection with dozens of charges, including conspiracy to commit procurement fraud and causing financial loss to the state.

His lawyers argue that the allegations are politically motivated and have pledged to challenge any extradition request, while emphasising his commitment to comply with Ghanaian laws.

Kpebu’s comments come amid a growing chorus of political leaders and civil society figures urging Ofori-Atta to return and answer the charges against him.

President commends Police Service for ensuring peaceful Christmas

0

By Gifty Amofa, GNA

Accra, Jan. 10, GNA – President John Dramani Mahama has commended the Ghana Police Service for its outstanding performance in ensuring peaceful Christmas and New Year festivities across the country.

“Let me commend the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), the leadership and personnel of the Ghana Police Service for your commendable performance during the recent Christmas season,” the President said.

“There were a lot of businesses and activities over the Christmas period, yet you made sure that crime was kept at a very, very low level.”

President Mahama made the commendation at the 2025 West Africa Security Social Activity (WASSA) held at the Police Headquarters in Accra on Thursday.

WASSA is an end-of-year social gathering organised by the security agencies to take stock of the year’s activities, re-strategise, socialise, and celebrate with stakeholders.

The President commended officers at all levels for their diligence during periods of heightened security demand, noting that festive seasons often came with increased travel, social activities and security risks.

He said through careful planning, discipline and intelligence-led operations, the Police Service ensured that Ghanaians celebrated  Christmas and New Year in peace and safety.

“Let me particularly acknowledge the IGP, Mr Christian Tetteh Yohuno, and the Police Management Board for the strategic deployment of personnel across our highways, communities, markets, places of worship, transport terminals and entertainment centres,” the President said.

He noted that the visible police presence reassured the public and demonstrated a vigilant and responsive Police Service.

President Mahama warned that criminal elements who targeted security personnel, whether to harm or kill them, would be relentlessly pursued and brought to justice.

Mr Yohuno, on his part, praised President Mahama’s Administration for continuously boosting the morale of personnel through logistical support.

Among those present at the event were former Inspectors-General of Police, Regional Police Commanders, retired police officers, members of the Police Management Board and civilians.

Participants were entertained to performances by veteran musicians and cultural troupes, featuring both old and contemporary music.

Notable performers included Daughters of Glorious Jesus, Kojo Antwi, Obaapa Christy, Tagoe Sisters, Piesie Esther and Akosua Agyapong.

Meagan Good and Jonathan Majors to gain Guinea citizenship after DNA results

Meagan Good and her husband Majors have arrived in Guinea Meagan Good and her husband Majors have arrived in Guinea

Husband and wife movie stars Meagan Good and Jonathan Majors have travelled to Guinea, where the US couple are due to be granted citizenship after tracing their ancestry to the West African nation through DNA testing.

“We are just happy to be here,” said Good, best known for the film Think Like a Man, and who went on to explain that it was her first visit to Guinea.

Majors, a star of Creed and Ant-Man, added: “I am excited to meet the people and go around the town with my wife.”

Their citizenship ceremony has been organised by the ministry of culture – and is similar to other initiatives in the region to encourage people of African descent to reclaim their heritage and invest in the continent.

The event – a private cultural ceremony – took place at a new tourist garden on the outskirts of the capital, Conakry, on Friday, January 9, 2026.

Good, 44, and Majors, 36, began dating in May 2023 and tied the knot in 2025.

They married following a turbulent period in Majors’ life. In 2024, he was sentenced in the US to probation for assaulting his ex-girlfriend, British choreographer Grace Jabbari. He was mandated to complete a 52-week domestic violence intervention programme.

The actors landed at Conakry’s Gbessia International Airport in the early hours of Friday morning, Januar 9, 2026, and were welcomed with great fanfare by officials and musicians.

During their stay in Guinea, the pair are scheduled to tour Boké, a coastal region with historic slave trade sites. It is not clear if they plan to invest in or move to Guinea.

In recent years, several celebrities have taken up citizenships of countries in Africa.

It largely began in 2019 when Ghana launched “The Year of Return”, inviting those with African heritage to come home and invest. One of the most prominent stars to do so was Stevie Wonder in 2024.

Other notable examples have been US singer Ciara, who took Beninese citizenship last year, and Hollywood actor Samuel L Jackson, who acquired a Gabonese passport in 2020.

Guinea itself has a long history of welcoming activists and people from the African diaspora.

In the 1960s, South African singer Miriam Makeba and her husband, US civil rights activist and Black Panther leader Stokely Carmichael, moved to Guinea.

Makeba had been made stateless for her opposition to apartheid and after her marriage to Carmichael, who popularised the slogan “black power”, her US visa was revoked.

She was treated as an honorary Guinean citizen and cultural ambassador, while Carmichael, who took the name Kwame Ture, remained in Guinea even after their divorce, dying there in 1998.

Guinea has experience political turmoil in recent years – and under the junta that seized power in 2021 the country has become less open to dissent.

Coup leader Gen Mamady Doumbouya restricted the media and suppressed protests.

The country has recently returned to civilian rule following elections last month, won by Doumbouya with 87% of the vote.

Unlike other countries in the region that have experienced recent coups, Guinea has maintained relations with Western governments, particularly France.

The country is rich in minerals, including bauxite, iron ore, diamonds, gold and uranium, yet its people remain among the poorest in West Africa.

SSNIT increases monthly pensions by 10%

0
Kwesi Afreh Biney – Director-General of SSNIT.

The Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) has announced a 10 per cent increase in monthly pensions for all 261,920 pensioners on its payroll as of December 31, 2025.

The 10 per cent indexation rate for 2026 was done in consultation with the National Pensions Regulatory Authority (NPRA) and in accordance with Section 80 of the National Pensions Act, 2008 (Act 766).

All pensioners on the SSNIT Pension Payroll will have their monthly pensions increased by a fixed rate of six per cent plus a redistributed amount of GH¢91.56 of the remaining four per cent.

The new rate would make existing pensioners on minimum pension of GH¢300 receive GH¢409.56 per month – an increase of 36.52 per cent due to the redistribution module, while new those joining the Scheme in 2026 would have a minimum pension of GH¢400.

On the other hand, the highest-earning pensioner who received GH¢201,792.37 as of 31 December 2025 would receive GH¢213,991.47 per month in 2026.

Mr Kwesi Afreh Biney, the Director-General of SSNIT, speaking at the 2026 pension indexation announcement in Accra on Thursday, said the new rate and redistribution mechanism was to cushion low-earning pensioners in conformity with the solidarity principle of social security.

He explained that unlike 2025 where pension was increased by 12 per cent against an inflation rate of 23.8 per cent, the 2026 increase of 10 per cent was a growth of nearly five per cent as the inflation rate stood at 5.4 per cent in December 2025.

“It is important to state that the current indexation is higher than the recent inflation rate. What that means is that every pensioner on the payroll has been covered by inflation,” he said, adding that the move showed the Trust’s commitment to the welfare of pensioners.

“This is testament to our commitment to ensure that those at the lower end are as protected as possible, while ensuring sustainability… We will keep growing this fund and ensure that as things improve, the benefits would be passed on to pensioners,” Mr Biney said.

Mrs Evelyn Adjei, Chief Actuary, SSNIT, said the Trust used salary growth among active contributors, projected average inflation of 8 ± 2 per cent by the end of 2025 and the overall impact on the Fund’s long-term sustainability to determine the 2026 rate.

She said about 70 per cent of pensioners would get an increase of the 10 per cent, with an additional cost of GHS616.6 million to the Scheme as it estimated to pay over GH¢7 billion to pensioners in 2026, with over GH¢580 million disbursed monthly.

The decision, she noted, reflected prevailing economic conditions and SSNIT’s statutory responsibility to periodically adjust pensions to help maintain their real value, while safeguarding the financial sustainability of the Scheme for generations.

Mr Frank Mobila, the General Manager of Benefits, SSNIT, said the 10 per cent increase in pension benefits reflected its continued commitment “to protecting the dignity, purchasing power of our pensioners and ensuring the sustainability of the Scheme.”

“The 2026 indexation focuses on cushioning low-income pensioners and strengthening the minimum pension floor, while maintaining responsible pension adjustments across the Scheme,” he said.

As of December 2025, SSNIT paid 261,920 pensioners monthly, with its active contributors being 2.1 million.

Of this number, the private sector membership was two-thirds with one-third from the public sector.

Manchester City’s official accounts also posted the image with the message: “Let’s get to work”, underlining the team’s readiness to integrate the Ghana international into Pep Guardiola’s plans.

Semenyo, who will wear the number 42 shirt, arrived at City following a prolific start to the 2025/26 season at Bournemouth, scoring 10 Premier League goals and providing three assists.

His versatility on both wings and proven goal-scoring record make him a key addition to City’s attacking options as they pursue Premier League and Champions League glory.

The early glimpses of Semenyo at the club, from training sessions to the friendly introduction with Haaland, suggest he is already settling into the squad.

Guardiola and his teammates will now look to harness his pace, power, and finishing ability as City aim to strengthen their already formidable attack in the second half of the season.

ORAL recoveries to start flowing this year

0

The Attorney-General and Minister for Justice, Dr Dominic Ayine, has assured Ghanaians that government will soon begin to recover funds through the work of the Operation Recover All Loots (ORAL), as investigations into financial irregularities intensify.

Speaking on the matter, Dr Ayine said although he cannot state with mathematical certainty that the full projected amount of US$21 billion will be recovered, significant progress is being made through extensive collaboration with both local and international partners.

He explained that key state institutions, including the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) and the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB), are supporting the effort on the domestic front. In addition, a specialised investigations team reporting directly to the Attorney-General has been established to handle sensitive cases.

According to Dr Ayine, the team is made up of highly experienced investigators working discreetly to trace assets and financial losses, and their work is already yielding results. He indicated that funds will soon start flowing back into the public purse as cases mature.

Citing the District Roads Improvement Programme (DRIP) as an example, Dr Ayine disclosed that investigations conducted in collaboration with the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) have confirmed that GH¢22 million in taxes was evaded in relation to the transaction.

He explained that while his office initially estimated the evasion at GH¢38.7 million, it sought formal verification from the GRA in July last year, given that only the revenue authority has the mandate to determine tax liabilities. Last week, the GRA confirmed the GH¢22 million figure.

Dr Ayine further disclosed that the company had acknowledged in writing that certain items were warehoused after being cleared as tax-exempt, despite not qualifying for such exemptions. He emphasised that this admission does not absolve the firm, noting that importing goods without paying the required duties constitutes tax evasion.

The Attorney-General also disclosed that an alleged US$2 million overpayment connected to the DRIP contract has been identified and will be pursued in addition to the confirmed GH¢22 million tax evasion. He dismissed claims that the overpayment resulted from a clerical error, insisting that the matter is substantive and will be followed through.

Dr Ayine reiterated government’s commitment to accountability and asset recovery, assuring the public that ongoing investigations under ORAL will lead to tangible financial recoveries for the state.

Meanwhile, former Auditor-General and member of the Operation Recover All Loots (ORAL) team, Daniel Yao Domelevo, has emphasised the need to sustain momentum on the government’s anti-corruption initiative to maintain public trust.

“ORAL was a big plan that was used for the 2024 election and we must keep it hot such that the public will not lose confidence over what we are doing,” he said on Channel one TV’s The Big Issue on Saturday, January 10, 2026.

GH¢22m tax evaded in DRIP contract

0

The Ghana Revenue Authority has confirmed that GH¢22 million in taxes was evaded in the District Roads Improvement Programme deal involving J.A. Plant Pool Limited, the Attorney-General and Minister for Justice, Dr Dominic Ayine, has revealed.

Speaking on the matter on Newsfile on Saturday January 10, Dr Ayine said the confirmation from the GRA puts beyond doubt the issue of tax evasion in the DRIP deal.

He explained that while his office initially estimated the tax evaded at GH¢38.7 million, it did not have the mandate to make a final determination and therefore formally requested verification from the GRA in July last year.

According to him, the GRA only confirmed last week that GH¢22 million in taxes had indeed been evaded, allowing him to speak with certainty on the matter.

Dr Ayine revealed that the company itself had written to acknowledge that some items imported under the DRIP arrangement were warehoused after being cleared as tax-exempt, even though they did not qualify for such exemptions. He stressed that this admission does not absolve the company of wrongdoing.

He explained that once goods are imported into the country without the payment of duties that should have been paid, tax evasion has occurred, regardless of any subsequent explanations.

The Attorney-General also disclosed that the alleged US$2 million overpayment linked to the DRIP contract has been flagged and will be pursued in addition to the confirmed GH¢22 million tax evasion. He rejected claims that the overpayment resulted from a clerical error, insisting that the matter is not an administrative mistake.

Dr Ayine’s comments come in response to a statement by J.A. Plant Pool Limited last year, which rejected allegations of overpayment, tax evasion and over-invoicing in the DRIP contract. The company had attributed the US$2 million discrepancy to a clerical error and maintained that all imports were properly declared and processed through bonded warehouses.

However, Dr Ayine reiterated that investigations have been conducted and evidence exists to support the government’s position. He maintained that he stands by his earlier statements and indicated that legal action remains an option if the company fails to comply with demands arising from the findings.

The dispute continues to draw public attention as government pursues accountability and recovery of funds linked to the DRIP programme.
