Ghana, Japan sign $13.4m agreement to enhance Tamale’s electricity supply

0

Ghana and Japan have formalized a $13.44 million grant agreement aimed at improving the stability and reliability of electricity supply in Tamale, the capital of the Northern Region.

The initiative is designed to address power challenges in the area by enhancing energy infrastructure, ensuring a more consistent supply for households, businesses, and essential services.

Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, announcing the deal on his official Facebook page on Friday, March 14, 2025, described the partnership as a significant boost for Tamale’s electricity network.

The agreement was signed between the Government of Ghana and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) as part of ongoing bilateral efforts to support Ghana’s energy sector.

The project, funded by the grant, will involve the construction of a new power substation and the expansion of distribution lines, significantly strengthening Tamale’s energy infrastructure.

Dr. Forson signed on behalf of Ghana, while Her Excellency Suzuki Momoko, Chief Representative of JICA, represented the Government of Japan during the signing ceremony.

Dr. Forson emphasized that the initiative would play a crucial role in fostering economic growth, creating jobs, and improving living standards for residents of Tamale and surrounding communities.

“This project represents a major milestone in our commitment to economic development, job creation, and enhanced livelihoods in the Northern Region. By ensuring uninterrupted electricity supply, we are providing businesses, households, and critical services with the energy security they need to thrive,” Dr. Forson stated.

He further expressed Ghana’s gratitude for Japan’s continued support, noting that such collaborations are vital in bridging the country’s energy gaps and driving industrialization.

Once completed, the project is expected to significantly transform Tamale’s energy landscape, stimulating local businesses and improving the quality of life for residents.

Nsoatreman FC have announced their withdrawal from the ongoing 2024/2025 season, citing serious concerns over safety and security.

According to the statement signed by the club’s president, Nsoatreman FC expressed that they could no longer guarantee the safety of their players.

“We are forced to take this decision due to recent events involving our matches with Kumasi Asante Kotoko and Samatex FC, which we officially wrote to your high office about,” the letter read.

The club further emphasized that while they regret any inconvenience caused by their withdrawal, ensuring the well-being of their players remains the ultimate priority.

Nsoatreman exit the season while sitting 14th with 21 points. Their withdrawal could affect the outlook of the relegation battle with few matches left to conclude the season.

Executive Chairman of the McDan Group, Daniel McKorley, has advised young people to prioritise financial stability before considering marriage.

Speaking at the 2025 PCH Hangouts event held at the ICGC ‘New Wine Temple’ in East Legon, McDan emphasised that marriage without financial readiness can be overwhelming and hinder personal growth.

“If you don’t have money, don’t marry. Marriage without money can derail you,” he stated.

Drawing from his own experiences, McDan narrated how he delayed marriage until later in life due to concerns about not having enough money to support it.

“I couldn’t marry early because I was afraid of ‘chop money.’ I grew up in an environment where you could see a man physically abusing a woman because of money, and a woman verbally abusing a man because of money.

“So, the institution of marriage was scary for me,” he confessed.

No NDC MP is running to Flagstaff House for appointments – Dafeamekpor insists

The Majority Chief Whip and Member of Parliament for South Dayi, Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor, has dismissed reports suggesting that Members of Parliament from the National Democratic Congress (NDC) have been flocking to the Flagstaff House in pursuit of appointments.

He made this statement in response to criticisms from Members of Parliament belonging to the New Patriotic Party (NPP), who accused NDC MPs of neglecting parliamentary duties and failing to attend House sessions.

According to Dafeamekpor, NDC MPs are not mere ceremonial attendees; they actively participate in parliamentary proceedings to fulfill their responsibilities.

Speaking on the floor of Parliament on Thursday, March 13, 2025, he stressed, “We are not ceremonial attendees to parliamentary proceedings; we attend to conduct business. So, it is also not true that my side, my members, are trooping to the Flagstaff House for appointments or board positions. It is also not correct, so let the record not reflect that my members are absent because they are seeking appointments onto boards or opportunities to chair them. We deny that.”

He also refuted claims that the delay in appointing four additional Ministers of State was due to interference.

He emphasised that the power to appoint lies solely with President John Mahama, who has the discretion to make such decisions as he deems appropriate.

Mahama, he stated, will act with authority and fulfill his responsibilities in due time.

Additionally, Dafeamekpor refuted claims that President John Mahama’s government comprises only ten percent women.

“Mr. Speaker, it is also not accurate that John Dramani Mahama appointed only 10% of women in government. That is not accurate.

Finally, Mr. Speaker, it is also not accurate that the delay in appointing the four outstanding Ministers of State is due to other issues. It is not true. The power to appoint is inherent in His Excellency John Mahama, and he may do so with some urgency and he will do it,” he said.

He added, “With this, Mr. Speaker, I urge my brother to allow us to take the two statements that we have agreed to take and let the record also reflect that the current Minority Leader was a distinguished board chairman of two very important state institutions.”

Rival forces seize mayor’s office in key Ethiopian town amid fears of new conflict

0

Tigray is still recovering from the two-year conflict which ended in 2022 Tigray is still recovering from the two-year conflict which ended in 2022

A dissident faction of the main political party in Ethiopia’s northern region of Tigray has seized control of key offices and a radio station in the regional capital, Mekelle, amid growing fears of a fresh conflict.

It follows a deepening power struggle within the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF), which has raised concerns of a return to civil war.

One Mekelle resident told the BBC that people were withdrawing money from their bank accounts, fearing the security situation could deteriorate.

On Tuesday, the same faction took control of Adigrat, Tigray’s second-largest city.

Getachew Reda, president of Tigray’s interim administration, has accused the rival group, led by Debretsion Gebremichael, of attempting to forcefully remove him from office.

Getachew became Tigray’s leader following a 2022 peace deal which ended two years of conflict in the region, which killed an estimated 500,000 people.

Debretsion Gebremichael was previously the region’s leader but over the past year, relations have sourced with the man who replaced him.

On Thursday, members of Debretsion’s faction accompanied by armed soldiers took control of Mekelle FM radio station and the mayor’s office in the city.

Gunshots were heard on Wednesday night in Adi-Gudem, a town near Mekelle, when forces from the dissident faction attempted to occupy a government building.

The forces reportedly arrested the town’s mayor and took control of the office.

Getachew has suspended three generals of the Tigray Defence Forces, accusing the rival faction of trying to destabilise the region.

On Wednesday, Getachew asked the Ethiopian government to “provide necessary assistance”, without specifying the kind of support.

He is currently in the country’s capital Addis Ababa for “consultations with the federal authorities” but he told the BBC that he intends to return to Tigray.

Federal authorities in Ethiopia have not yet commented.

In a press statement on Thursday, Getachew accused his rivals of colluding with neighbouring Eritrea, which was involved in Tigray’s civil war and has a fractious relationship with Ethiopia’s government.

“We have reason to believe external actors are involved,” he said, accusing Eritrea of being among those who think “they would benefit from turmoil in Tigray”.

Eritrea denies any such intention but its army fought in the previous war, where it was accused of mass killings and rape.

Two close allies of Debretsion have rejected the accusation they are linked to Eritrea, and downplayed the possibility of another round of conflict.

Speaking to BBC’s Newsday, Getachew accused high-ranking Tigrayan military officers of attempting to orchestrate an “open coup”.

The tensions have sparked fresh anxiety in the region, which is yet to recover from the conflict that ended in 2022 after the TPLF and the Ethiopian government signed a peace deal.

The agreement led to the creation of the interim administration, which is supposed to govern Tigray until regional elections are held.

But delays in implementing the agreement have fuelled sharp divisions within the TPLF.

Several countries including the US, Britain and the European Union have warned about the escalating tension, saying there must be “no return to violence”.

On Thursday, France called on its nationals in Tigray to “stock up on emergency supplies and to exercise utmost caution”.

Mahama charges IGP Yohuno to address rising security challenges

0

President John Dramani Mahama has charged the newly appointed Inspector General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohuno, with the critical responsibility of tackling Ghana’s evolving security threats.

He emphasised the necessity of adopting both traditional and modern policing strategies to enhance national safety and stability.

Speaking during the swearing-in ceremony on Friday, 14th March, President Mahama underscored the growing complexity of security challenges in the country.

He highlighted the increasing prevalence of cybercrime, fraud, and organised criminal activities, stressing the need for sophisticated investigative techniques to combat these threats effectively.

“Traditional security methods must be complemented with modern approaches to confront emerging crimes. We are witnessing a rise in violent incidents, cybercrime, and sophisticated fraud schemes, alongside new forms of organised crime that demand advanced investigative capabilities,” President Mahama stated.

The President also drew attention to global security concerns, particularly terrorism and transnational crime networks, which he described as major threats to national stability.

He stressed the importance of intelligence-led policing and proactive law enforcement in safeguarding the country.

“The global security landscape presents fresh challenges, from terrorism to transnational criminal organisations. These require robust intelligence gathering and proactive policing. The Ghanaian people expect their police service to provide the highest level of protection,” he noted.

IGP Yohuno’s appointment forms part of a broader restructuring initiative aimed at reinforcing Ghana’s law enforcement framework and enhancing public safety.

A section of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) security taskforce members in the Ashanti Region has accused James Agbey, a close associate of NDC stalwart Larry Gbelvo-Lartey, of neglecting them despite their contributions to the party’s activities.

The disgruntled taskforce members expressed their frustration at a press conference on March 13, 2025, alleging that they were instrumental in mobilising support and executing various assignments for the party but have since been abandoned.

In a viral video circulating on social media, some members of the taskforce could be heard chanting, “You can’t use us and dump us!” as they voiced their grievances over their treatment.

Leading the press conference was one Alhaji Tanko, who accused James Agbey of deceiving them.

He claimed that despite assurances of support and recognition for their efforts, those promises have not been fulfilled.

“We put our lives on the line for the party, yet when it’s time for recognition and support, we are left behind. This is not the unity and fairness we fought for,” Alhaji Tanko said.

The accusations come at a time when internal party tensions are rising ahead of the 2024 general elections.

Meanwhile, some members are calling on the NDC leadership to address their concerns and ensure that grassroots supporters who contribute to the party’s success are not sidelined.

As of now, James Agbey has not publicly responded to the allegations, while the party leadership is yet to comment on the matter.

Minority demands Vice president’s participation in 2025 budget debate

0

The Minority in Parliament wants the Vice President, Prof Naana Jane Opoku Agyemang to participate in the debate on the 2025 Budget next Tuesday.

The demand was made by the Member of Parliament for Okaikwei Central, Patrick Boamah, during the presentation of the business statement for the upcoming week.

Mr Boamah emphasised that the Vice President’s extensive experience in the education sector should be reflected in the government’s economic and financial policies.

He argued that her contributions would offer valuable insights, given her background and expertise.

“Given her significant experience in the education sector, it is crucial for the Vice President to take part in this debate. Her input could significantly shape the direction of the government’s economic policies,” he remarked.

Mr Boamah also referenced Act 111 of the Constitution, which grants the Vice President the right to participate in parliamentary proceedings.

He stressed that, under this provision, the Vice President should be accorded all the privileges of an MP, except for holding an office in Parliament.

“Mr Speaker, I realise the Business Committee has allocated time for ministers of state, but the Vice President’s absence is concerning. Given her background in education and as the former Minister for Education, her participation in this debate is vital. She is well-positioned to provide valuable insights into the President’s policies,” he explained.

Mr Boamah urged the Business Committee to amend the Business Statement to allocate time for the Vice President to participate in the debate. He stressed the importance of her presence, particularly as the first female Vice President of the country, who has sworn an oath under the Constitution to engage in such proceedings.

“Mr Speaker, I call on the Business Committee to revise the schedule and ensure that the Vice President is included in the debate. She swore an oath to participate in parliamentary affairs, and it is crucial for her to be here, especially as her contributions will bring unique insights into the 2025 budget,” he said.

“Mr Speaker, we want her to be here, ”he concluded.

IGP’s Sacking: Mahama’s Strategic Move Leaves NPP in a Dilemma

0

In a surprising political turn, former President John Dramani Mahama has sacked Inspector General of Police (IGP) Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, a move that many expected the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to capitalize on for political attacks.

However, according to political analyst Mussa Dankwah, the ruling party has instead remained silent, revealing an unexpected consensus on the matter.

Taking to his Facebook page, Mussa Dankwah analyzed the situation and how it has unfolded within Ghana’s political space. He noted that Mahama essentially gave the NPP an opportunity to criticize him, but the party refused to take it.

“In IGP’s sacking, Mahama gives NPP a back pass to score in an open goal but NPP runs from the pass,” he wrote.

Dankwah explained that, under normal circumstances, the NPP should have been the loudest critics of the decision, accusing Mahama of political interference. However, the silence from the ruling party has been deafening, indicating that they, too, were eager to see Dampare removed.

“They should have been hitting JM for sacking of Dampare but we see the two parties are united in celebration,” he stated.

The reason behind this unusual silence, he suggested, is that the NPP itself had attempted to remove Dampare before the 2024 elections but was unsuccessful. Now that Mahama has done what they could not accomplish, the ruling party is hesitant to attack him, fearing that it might expose their own failed attempts.

“They don’t want to condemn JM for this gesture which they themselves tried and failed before the election,” Dankwah observed.

With both the NDC and NPP appearing content with Dampare’s exit, many Ghanaians are left wondering about the true political dynamics behind the decision. For now, Dr. Dampare’s dismissal remains a controversial move that has left the political landscape buzzing with speculation and debate.

“Dampare, kafra,” Dankwah concluded, offering what seemed to be a word of sympathy for the embattled former IGP.

Nana Agyemang Prempeh writes: How the stock market operates in Ghana

0

You often hear business anchors and reporters say that the financial stock index has advanced by a few points or that the Ghana Stock Exchange (GSE) has recorded gains.

While these terms may sound technical, the key question is; why is the stock market making gains, and what exactly is being traded?

For those who may not fully understand, this GhanaWeb Business article provides deeper insights:

Overview of the Ghana Stock Exchange

The stock market in Ghana, primarily represented by the Ghana Stock Exchange (GSE), is a key component of the country’s financial system. It provides a platform for buying and selling securities, such as stocks, bonds, and government-issued securities.

Ghana’s financial sector is largely dominated by commercial banks, which have not been a reliable source of long-term financing.

As a result, the capital market is considered a better avenue for mobilizing both domestic and international capital, offering a potential solution to meet the private sector’s long-term financial needs.

Currently, 39 companies are listed on the Ghana Stock Exchange. These companies span various key sectors of the economy, including mining, brewing, banking, pharmaceuticals, oil, and manufacturing.

What is traded on the GSE?

Stocks (Equities): Represent ownership in listed companies. Investors buy shares to gain a stake in a company’s success and receive dividends.

Bonds: Debt securities issued by the government or companies. Buyers lend money to the issuer in exchange for periodic interest payments.

Government Securities: Bonds and other debt instruments issued by the government to raise funds.

Mutual Funds & ETFs: Investment products that pool investors’ money to invest in a diverse range of stocks and bonds.

How does stock trading work?

Listing of Companies: Companies looking to raise capital can list their shares on the GSE. This requires meeting strict criteria, including financial transparency and sound corporate governance.

Brokers and Dealers: Investors must trade through licensed brokers who act as intermediaries, ensuring that transactions comply with market regulations.

Market Orders & Limit Orders: Investors can place:
Market orders (buying/selling at the best available price).

Limit orders (setting a specific price at which they want to buy or sell).

Price determination

Supply and Demand: Stock prices are determined by the interaction between buyers and sellers. If demand for a stock increases, its price rises. Conversely, if more people want to sell a stock, its price falls.

Market indices

GSE Composite Index (GSE-CI): Tracks the performance of all listed stocks, offering a snapshot of the market’s overall health.

GSE Financial Stocks Index (GSE-FSI): Tracks the performance of financial sector stocks on the exchange.

Benefits of investing in the GSE

Capital Gains: Investors can earn profits by buying stocks at a lower price and selling at a higher price.

Dividend Income: Many companies on the GSE pay dividends, providing a steady income stream for shareholders.

Portfolio Diversification: The stock market allows investors to diversify their portfolios beyond traditional assets like real estate and savings accounts, reducing overall risk.

Conclusion

The Ghana Stock Exchange plays a crucial role in the country’s economy, enabling companies to raise capital and providing investors with opportunities to grow their wealth.

While challenges such as liquidity issues and low public participation persist, the market continues to evolve.

For those looking to invest, understanding the fundamentals of the stock market and seeking professional advice can help navigate its complexities effectively.

Okraku-Mantey told me to leave singing and pursue pageantry – Afua Asantewaa

Ghanaian entrepreneur and Guinness World Record contender, Afua Asantewaa Ghanaian entrepreneur and Guinness World Record contender, Afua Asantewaa

Ghanaian entrepreneur and Guinness World Record contender, Afua Asantewaa, has disclosed how former Deputy Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture, Mark Okraku-Mantey, almost crushed her dream of becoming a singer.

In an interview on Accra FM shared on Instagram on March 14, 2025, Afua Asantewaa stated that when she auditioned for the Mentor reality show some time ago, Mark Okraku-Mantey advised her to pursue beauty pageantry instead.

She expressed how hurt she was by Okraku-Mantey’s words, saying, “I sang a song from Becca and Mark Okraku-Mantey asked me to go into beauty pageantry. I was hurt by his words,” she said.

Afua Asantewaa said she took the comments in good faith and ventured into beauty pageantry, where she secured second place.

She also addressed recent rumours about receiving a house and apartment from the government following her Guinness World Record attempt.

“Recently, I went online and saw that I’ve been dashed a V8. People are bitter with me because they feel I’ve used state funds. But that’s not the case. Some are even claiming I was given an apartment, which are all lies because I am staying in my own house,” she clarified.

The Tax Refund and how to apply for reimbursement

0

Tax Refunds accrued GH¢29.11 billion in 8 years Tax Refunds accrued GH¢29.11 billion in 8 years

If you heard the term tax refund for the first time when the Minister of Finance, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, mentioned it, this article is here to satisfy your curiosity.

The minister stated that a study on the use of tax refunds over the past eight (8) years revealed that GH¢29.11 billion had accrued to the tax refund account. However, only GH¢12.5 billion representing 43% of the total accrued amount was used for tax refund purposes.

He further disclosed that the study found GH¢16.6 billion, representing 57% of the total amount accumulated in the tax refund account, had been misapplied.

This, he noted, is a clear violation of the Revenue Administration Act, 2016 (Act 915) and the Public Financial Management Act, 2016 (Act 921).

A tax refund is simply a reimbursement to taxpayers for any excess amount paid in taxes to the government.

According to the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), a tax refund is due when your prepaid taxes and tax credits exceed the tax charged for the year.

The GRA can issue the refund in cash or grant you a tax credit, which can be used to offset future tax obligations.

How does one apply for Tax Refunds

A taxpayer may within 3 years of the relevant date, apply to the Commissioner–General for a refund of tax paid in excess of the tax liability of that taxpayer.

The process for application is as follows:

The Commissioner–General prescribes the form of the application.

The application must be in writing and include an explanation on how the excess is calculated and attach relevant evidence.

Note: ‘Relevant date’ above means the later date of

1. The date of the event that caused payment of excess tax.

2. The date on which the tax return is filed by the taxpayer on that payment.

3. The date of payment of excess tax.

Decision on application for Tax Refunds

The Commissioner–General shall within 60 days of receipt of an application for a refund, consider it and make an appropriate decision.

The decisions made could be:

1. A rejection of the application where the Commissioner General has the opinion that the taxpayer did not pay excess tax.

2. A refund made to the taxpayer if satisfied that excess tax was paid.

3. Further information may be requested to assist in making a final decision, If the Commissioner–General is not satisfied that excess tax was paid.

A written notice of the decision made will be served to the applicant within 30 days.

In the case of option (3) above, the Commissioner- General shall reconsider the application and make a decision by serving notice on the applicant within 60 days of receiving the original application.

Payment of Tax Refunds

1. Where the Commissioner-General is satisfied that a person is entitled to a tax refund, either after application by the taxpayer or by order of a court or tribunal, the Commissioner–General shall:

a. Apply the excess as a reduction of any outstanding tax liability; and

b. Refund the remainder to the person within 90 days of making the decision.

2. Where the Commissioner–General accepts to refund part of the excess tax applied for by a person, the Commissioner–General shall refund the amount accepted, irrespective of whether the person files an objection against the decision of the Commissioner–General.

3. Where, the Commissioner–General fails to refund the excess tax within 90 days as specified, the Commissioner- General is liable to pay interest on the amount.

4. The interest is calculated as 50% of the statutory rate and is for the period beginning from the earlier of either.

a. The date the refund decision is made; or

b. The day the person files an objection against the tax decision that gave rise to payment of the excess tax.

And ending on the day the refund is made.

5. Interest paid by a person under a tax law with respect to tax not paid on time shall, where the tax is found to have been payable, be refunded to the person with any interest.

6. Where the Commissioner–General refunds tax in error, the Commissioner–General may recover the refund as a tax liability.

He’s a dictator and threatens workers with dismissal at the least provocation – Ohemaa Woyeje Slams Angel FM CEO

0

Popular radio presenter Harey Adjoa Yeboah Asiamah Kusi, otherwise known as Ohemaa Woyeje, has made serious allegations against Vincent Opare, the CEO of Angel Media Group.

In a Facebook post sighted by Ameyaw Debrah Media, she accused him of sidelining her, interfering with her work, and orchestrating unfair treatment against her and other employees at Angel FM.

The controversy follows a recent incident on Wednesday, March 12, 2025, where security personnel allegedly blocked her from entering the Angel FM premises. A video of the clash surfaced online, prompting Ohemaa Woyeje to publicly share details of her grievances.

According to her, Vincent Opare has been deliberately frustrating her work by instructing his preferred hosts to take over her show, sidelining her team from joining Angel FM at its new building, and even demanding money from musician Diana Hamilton after she appeared on her show.

“CEO Vincent Opare would ask his preferred host to take my show for an interview that’s within my slot. He sidelined my hardworking team from joining Angel fm at d new building for no reason,” she wrote.

She also claimed that he falsely accused her of insulting him over the phone and pressured management to query her over baseless allegations.

Among other accusations, Ohemaa Woyeje stated that the CEO demanded she hand over any monetary gifts received from guests on her show for office expenses, frequently disrupted her live broadcasts, and dropped her from high-level discussions at the station. Additionally, she alleged that he has created a hostile work environment, stopped payments to resource persons, and failed to ensure timely salary payments.

She further accused Vincent Opare of dictatorial leadership, threatening employees with dismissal, and sharing private conversations with others. She expressed frustration over his handling of the station, particularly his lack of media experience and failure to retain experienced staff, including notable personalities like Yaa Brefo.

“He’s a dictator and threatens workers with dismissal at the least provocation,” she wrote.

Ohemaa Woyeje emphasized that Dr. Kwaku Oteng, the founder of Angel Media Group, has distanced himself from Vincent Opare’s actions and clarified that the CEO acted on his own when he allegedly brought masked thugs to the station. Dr. Oteng has reportedly advised Opare to stop frustrating her contract, as he still values her contribution to the company.

This latest revelation adds to the growing tension between the broadcaster and management, raising concerns about leadership and employee treatment at Angel FM.

“72 Hours Before His Dismissal” — Adom-Otchere Claims Dampare Paid Top Officials to Keep IGP Post

0

Paul Adom-Otchere, host of Good Evening Ghana on Metro TV and former Chairman of the Ghana Airports Company Limited, has claimed that former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Dr. George Akuffo Dampare allegedly paid thousands of dollars to two senior officials at Jubilee House in a bid to retain his position as reported by Ghana Web.

Adom-Otchere made the allegations on his show on March 13, 2025, suggesting that the payments were made just days before Dampare’s removal.

He stated that a man identified as Listowell confronted the two unnamed officials, questioning why they accepted the alleged bribe despite knowing the IGP was about to be dismissed.

“So, there is a guy called Listowell who went to Jubilee House and asked why high-profile officials were allegedly receiving presents from Akuffo Dampare just 72 hours before his dismissal,” Adom-Otchere said.

He further raised concerns about the source of the alleged funds and insisted the payments were an attempt by Dampare to hold on to his position.

The two officials who allegedly accepted the money have not been named, and Adom-Otchere has yet to provide detailed evidence.

Meanwhile, President John Dramani Mahama officially removed Dr. George Akuffo Dampare from his role as IGP on March 13, 2025. Commissioner of Police (COP) Christian Tetteh Yohuno has been appointed as his replacement.

A statement from the Minister of Government Communication, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, confirmed the appointment, highlighting Yohuno’s four decades of experience and his expected role in modernizing the Ghana Police Service.

Minority demands presence of Veep in Parliament for 2025 budget debate

0

The Minority in Parliament is requesting that Vice President Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang be present in the House on Tuesday, March 18, to participate in the debate on the 2025 Budget.

This request is based on Article 111 of the constitution, which allows the Vice President to take part in parliamentary proceedings.

The Member of Parliament for Okaikwei Central, Patrick Yaw Boamah reacting to the presentation of the Business Statement for next week stated that the Vice President’s extensive experience in the education sector should be reflected in the government’s economic and financial policy.

“The Business Committee has made allocations for ministers of state leaving out the Vice President who has been very quiet and it will be very important to have to see her in action on the floor to debate the President’s economic and financial policy especially having been a former Minister of Education.

“And so I will want the Business Committee to amend the Business Paper and have a time allotted the Vice President to be here since she is the first female Vice President she is permitted by the constitution to participate.”

FirstBank Ghana launches private banking and wealth management service

0

FirstBank Ghana has officially introduced its Private Banking and Wealth Management Service in Kumasi, a significant development designed to offer personalized banking experiences that cater to the unique financial needs and aspirations of high-net-worth individuals and families across the country.

The service promises to deliver a comprehensive suite of products, including investment management, estate planning, tax advisory, and tailored credit solutions.

With 130 years of experience, the Bank is certain their expertise in the banking field offers clients the privilege of working with dedicated relationship managers who are committed to understanding their individual needs and providing exceptional service.

CEO of FirstBank Ghana Limited, Victor Yaw Asante, emphasized the need to protect wealth without being affected by inflation and depreciation.

“High net worth individuals are usually also interested in how to protect their wealth. The two key things that affect wealth quickly are inflation and depreciation, so you always make sure you’re invested in instruments and in products that protect the value of your money”.

“The whole point is about getting a return that is above what you lose as a result of depreciation and inflation. It is one of the reasons why you must invest. Try to find instruments that will give you a return that is higher than what you lose as a result of inflation. So first make sure you don’t lose value and then make sure you get a good return on it,” he said.

The launch featured notable financial experts who shared insights on current market trends, investment strategies, and the importance of wealth management in achieving financial security highlighting the growing demand for personalized banking solutions in Ghana, particularly among the affluent demographic.

Idowu Thompson, Global Head and Group Executive Private Banking and Wealth Management for FirstBank Nigeria, highlighted the continuous change in the economic landscape and assured they will adapt to new strategies that protect the wealth of their target audience.

“With the change in economic landscape, the rate of adoption has also transformed greatly. Change isn’t always bad and challenges doesn’t mean that it’s an end in itself. We will continue to engage all opportunities we can to meet needs,” he stated.

He further explained that even though the initiative targeted high-net-worth individuals, it is all inclusive for anyone who sees the need to manage their finances.

“We are speaking to private wealth but it’s also more inclusive these days. So it’s not just something that is for the super affluent or high valued people. It’s for everybody who wants to know how they can better organize their finances so they can live their best lives,” he explained.

The Head of Private Banking and Wealth Management, Catherine Ekar, assured that as more individuals seek personalized financial services, the bank is poised to meet personal demands and goals of clients.

“How we will cater for needs is going to be very specific, tailored to each person’s needs. Depending on what their goals or their financial plans are, you make a solution for them. For some clients it’s about safeguarding their wealth for future generations, for some it’s about hedging against forex, so we look at how we set a portfolio for them to achieve their goals. It’s really important to know your clients and understand what their goals are,” she said.

Tackle emerging security threats – Mahama to COP Yohuno

0

President John Dramani Mahama has tasked newly sworn-in Inspector General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohuno, with implementing decisive measures to address Ghana’s evolving security challenges.

Speaking at the swearing-in ceremony on Friday, March 14, President Mahama stressed the importance of integrating traditional security methods with modern strategies to combat emerging threats.

“Traditional security methods must be adopted to confront new and emerging threats and crimes. We face increasing incidents of violence and crimes, cybercrime, and fraud, as well as new forms of organised crimes that demand sophisticated investigative techniques,” he stated.

The President also underscored global security concerns, including terrorism and transnational crime networks, emphasizing the need for intelligence-driven and proactive law enforcement.

“Additionally, the global security environment presents fresh challenges, from terrorism to transnational crime networks, which require strong intelligence gathering and proactive law enforcement. Ghanaians have high expectations of the police service; our people look to you for protection.”

IGP Yohuno’s appointment comes as part of a restructuring effort aimed at bolstering law enforcement and ensuring public safety nationwide. He replaces Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, whose removal was announced on Thursday, March 13.

COP Yohuno takes over from COP Dr George Akuffo Dampare, whose tenure as IGP has come to an end.

The new IGP brings with him four decades of extensive experience in policing, making him well equipped to lead the service into a new era of transformation and modernisation.

President Mahama expressed confidence in COP Yohuno’s ability to drive reforms within the Ghana Police Service, emphasising the need for enhanced professionalism, community engagement and the adoption of modern policing strategies to address emerging security challenges.

New Bank of Ghana Board inaugurated

0

Vice-President Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang has urged the Governing Board of the Bank of Ghana to examine the bank’s existing policies to ensure they are aligned with leading contemporary policies.

She said more importantly, the policies should align to the government’s social contract with the people of Ghana.

The Vice-President made the call when she swore in the Governing Board of the Bank in Accra.

She said the government had ensured gender parity in the composition of the Board with the appointment of five women.

This composition, with over 40 per cent female representation, makes this Board appropriately diverse, inclusive and consistent with leading global practice and standards on board diversity and inclusion, she said.

“I have no doubt that with the right board dynamics and support from the government and all other stakeholders, you will live up to all expectations,” she said.

Prof Opoku-Agyemang expressed the hope that the Board would provide the necessary and enabling governance structures and financial sector leadership to propel the economic reset, rebuild and consolidation agenda of the government.

She said the members’ diverse backgrounds as public and private sector operators had equipped them with the required attitude and perspectives to offer the dynamic and inspirational leadership the Bank required at this critical period with significant challenges in the economy.

“The Bank presently requires dynamic and innovative leadership to provide the public services it is known for, and ultimately to restore and enhance the trust of the public and stakeholders in the Bank,” she added.

The Vice-President said the success or otherwise of the government largely depended on the performance of the Central Bank.

She said, “The President’s social contract with the people of Ghana to reset, rebuild and restore public trust and macro-economic stability, through responsive financial sector governance and sound economic policies rest on your shoulders as the Board, in equal manner as the Cabinet, the Minister for Finance and all other key stakeholders.”

Dr. Johnson Pandit Asiama, the Governor of the BOG, said the moment marked the beginning of a new chapter for the institution, as we embarked on a renewed commitment to financial stability, sound monetary policy, and economic resilience.

“We stand at a time of significant economic challenges macroeconomic instability, rising inflationary pressures, currency volatility, and fiscal constraints—all of which demand urgent and strategic action,” he said.

He said the Board, composed of esteemed professionals with vast expertise, was tasked with guiding the Bank’s policy direction and ensuring that we navigated these challenges with boldness, integrity, and accountability.

He said the inauguration provided them with an opportunity to reaffirm their commitment to excellence, transparency, and independence in their monetary and financial policies.

Is it right for younger officers to be promoted above their seniors?

0

Minister of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, Abla Dzifa Gomashie Minister of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, Abla Dzifa Gomashie

Minister of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, Abla Dzifa Gomashie, has sparked a debate after raising questions about promotions within structured institutions in Ghana.

On her Facebook page on March 13, 2025, Dzifa Gomashie, who referred to herself as once a “barracks girl,” pondered over the implications of promoting younger officers above their seniors, thus forcing the latter into early retirement.

She also questioned the fate of individuals ‘passed over’ for promotions and why some remain in the same position for years while others are promoted.

“When younger officers are promoted above their seniors, forcing them into early retirement, is it good? When precedents are set by promotions that have never been done, what happens to the system?

“When people in line for promotion in a structured environment are sidelined, what happens to those who are sidelined? Why are some people left in the same position/appointment or location for years while others are promoted?” she asked.

Although she did not provide any specific context, it is speculated that Dzifa Gomashie’s post might be in response to the appointment of COP Christian Tetteh Yohuno as the new Inspector General of Police (IGP), replacing Dr. George Akuffo Dampare.

The Minister of State for Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, in his announcement on March 13, 2025, stated that the decision followed consultation with the Council of State and in accordance with the 1992 Constitution.

The decision to remove Dr. George Akuffo Dampare has since been met with shock, particularly from the policy think tank IMANI Ghana and security expert Professor Kwesi Aning, who had previously filed a suit at the Supreme Court to prevent his removal and that of other heads of security agencies, ahead of a pending ruling in May 2025.

Dampare, who had been serving as IGP since July 21, 2021, replaced James Oppong-Boanuh, who served from October 2019.

GRA to ‘chase’ online businesses to pay their taxes

Acting Commissioner-General of the Ghana Revenue Authority, Anthony Sarpong play videoActing Commissioner-General of the Ghana Revenue Authority, Anthony Sarpong

The Acting Commissioner-General of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), Anthony Sarpong, has reminded businesses operating in the e-commerce sector of their obligation to file their taxes.

He stated that the GRA will leverage technology to locate online businesses and ensure they comply with tax regulations.

According to him, it is an act of patriotism for these businesses to voluntarily pay their taxes without being pursued.

Speaking on the sidelines of the KPMG-UNDP Post-Budget Forum on March 13, 2025, he said, “For many of us who are doing business online, this is the time—the tax man will be coming to you. I know that with technology, we will find you. So make it easier for us. We will be coming after you with the spirit of dialogue and compliance, using only minimal force in line with the law. We want voluntary declaration and compliance.”

Similarly, the Partner and Head of Tax at KPMG Ghana, Kofi Frempong-Kore, urged the government to take advantage of modern technology to improve tax collection and expand the tax net.

According to him, the e-commerce sector is thriving due to the innovative ways people are using digital platforms to conduct business. He suggested that the government could adopt similar strategies to enhance tax collection and bring the informal sector into the tax net.

Speaking on the sidelines of the KPMG Post-Budget Forum on March 13, 2025, he stated, “Technology plays a crucial role. We need to leverage technology to identify individuals operating in the informal sector. The Commissioner-General even mentioned that if you go on Instagram now, you’ll find many people, including some of my colleagues, engaged in trade.”

“They advertise their products on Instagram and Facebook, keep the goods in their car boots, meet buyers to complete transactions, or even deliver the items directly. Today, people are delivering food using technology. This means the government can use the same digital tools to collect revenue,” he explained.

Frempong-Kore also expressed concern over Ghana’s narrow tax base, which he noted relies heavily on the formal sector.

“Less than 2 million Ghanaians are paying taxes out of a population of over 30 million, and these are mainly individuals employed in the formal sector. The focus should be on the informal sector, where the majority of Ghanaians operate. That is where I believe the government should direct its efforts,” he emphasised.

Mpho Magashule seeks justice after Diageo withdrew his job offer based on a false criminal record. Mpho Magashule seeks justice after Diageo withdrew his job offer based on a false criminal record.

A legal battle has erupted between a Gauteng man and one of South Africa’s biggest alcohol-producing companies, which terminated his employment, accusing him of having a criminal record.

Diageo produces well-known brands, including premium spirits such as Johnnie Walker, Tanqueray and Smirnoff.

The dispute between Mpho Magashule, 34, and Diageo South Africa is being heard in the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA).

Dispute between man and Diageo at CCMA

According to the CCMA documents, the case’s final hearing is today and the verdict will be issued after two weeks.

Magashule is accusing the company of refusing to reinstate him after he provided evidence that he did not have a criminal record.

Magashule said: “In September last year I applied to be a customer service representative, passed the interview and received a job offer.

“After a month, just when I was about to start, I received a letter informing me that my employment was terminated because I had a criminal record.

“I immediately went to the Sandton police station and a clearance certificate was issued vindicating me, but the company refused to take me back.

“I tried in vain to convince them to take me back, but they ended up blocking my e-mails, which angered me, then I approached the CCMA. I had rejected another offer because I was already employed by them. Now I am unemployed and I was a breadwinner at home.

‘I need them to pay my 8 months’ salary’

“I need them to pay my eight months’ salary and also pay for the damages and the stress I suffered because of their unfair dismissal,” said Magashule.

He said during the CCMA hearing, a witness from SA Police Service explained the situation.

The Citizen has seen a police clearance certificate showing that Magashule does not have a criminal record.

The letters that Magashule wrote to the company’s management trying to get his job back were shared with The Citizen.

One of the letters read: “The Saps had lately connected my ID number to a criminal case I was unaware of, which resulted in the offer being revoked.

“Sandton police station did acknowledge that the capturing error was on their side. I would like to respectfully request that the hiring manager reconsider the decision.”

‘Background assessment was unsuccessful’

In a statement to The Citizen, Diageo said: “Mr Magashule was considered and interviewed for a vacancy in the customer service section of our business. A provisional offer of employment was made to him, which was subject to a background check.

“The background assessment was unsuccessful. The basis for the unsuccessful background check outcome has been shared with the CCMA.”
