No one can block Mahama’s constitutional duty – Dr. Ayine fires back

0

Legal fireworks have erupted over former President John Mahama’s controversial consultation process regarding Ghana’s next Chief Justice, with Attorney General Dr. Dominic Ayine strongly pushing back against Attorney General Godfred Dame’s call for a halt.

Speaking to the media after court proceedings, Dr. Ayine, who represents the former president in the matter, firmly defended Mahama’s right to proceed with the ongoing consultation, insisting that it is a constitutionally mandated duty that cannot be halted by anyone, not even the Attorney General.

AG dismisses calls to suspend Chief Justice removal process

Attorney General and Minister for Justice, Dr. Dominic Ayine, has dismissed calls for President John Dramani Mahama to suspend ongoing proceedings related to the determination of a prima facie case on petitions seeking the removal of the Chief Justice.

His comments followed yet another adjournment by the Supreme Court in a case seeking to halt the President and the Council of State from moving forward with the process.

The adjournment was due to the absence of one of the five Justices presiding over the case, His Lordship Samuel Asiedu. Explaining the situation, Presiding Judge Her Ladyship Henrietta Mensah Bonsu said the Court had encountered “problems and for unavoidable reasons have to adjourn.”

The injunction application—filed by lawyer and plaintiff Godfred Yeboah Dame—aims to prevent the President from continuing with the petition review until the Supreme Court rules on the matter.

Speaking to the media after the adjournment, Dr. Ayine argued that the President is constitutionally bound to proceed with the process, regardless of the pending court application.

“He has applied to the court, and the court is yet to make an order. So, if he is saying that the court must hold on? Is he saying that the court has already granted an order in respect of which the president must not continue the process?” Dr. Ayine questioned.

He further emphasised that no legal basis exists to stop the President from performing his constitutional duties.

“He must understand that it is the constitutional duty, and the law is very clear that you cannot enjoin the performance or conduct of a public communication,” he added.

AIDEC Digital launches BPO Center to boost Ghana’s global outsourcing potential

0

AIDEC Digital, a subsidiary of the AIDEC Group of Companies, has officially launched its state-of-the-art Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) center in Accra, marking a significant milestone in Ghana’s digital transformation journey and solidifying the country’s position as an emerging hub for global digital outsourcing services. The launch event was held under the theme – ‘Global Competitiveness and Strategic Partnerships: Positioning Ghana as a top digital outsourcing hub through strategic collaborations and job creation’.

It was attended by industry leaders, government representatives, and technology stakeholders, showcased AIDEC’s comprehensive suite of outsourcing solutions designed to serve both local and international clients while creating substantial employment opportunities for the nation’s increasingly tech-savvy population.

“This launch marks yet another milestone after several others by AIDEC in the digital landscape,” Sir Ambrose Yennah, Founder and Executive Chairman of AIDEC Group of Companies said at the launch event. “Our vision is to tap into the market potential by positioning Ghana as a hub for digital outsourcing, taking advantage of our growing digital ecosystem, skilled youth, and strategic location in Africa,” he added.

The new BPO facility positions Ghana to capture a larger share of the global BPO industry, currently valued at US$321 billion and projected to reach US$525 billion by 2030. Africa currently accounts for just 2 percent of this market, with South Africa, Egypt, and Morocco dominating the continent’s share at 87 percent.

Nonetheless, a combination of factors, including a young, upwardly-mobile, english-speaking and political stability, are adding to Ghana’s appeal. “Ghana has all the attributes of a favorable destination for BPO services—political stability, English as the first language, a high percentage of university graduates, and a strategic location in Africa. AIDEC’s investment in this sector demonstrates confidence in our ability to compete globally,” David Gowu, CEO of Business Outsourcing Services Association Ghana (BOSAG) explained.

The AIDEC Digital Hub offers a diverse range of services including inbound and outbound call center operations and customer support; data entry, processing, and analytics; AI and business intelligence solutions as well as E-learning, IT training, and ISO certification. Others include IT and software development support; digital marketing and content management.

Emmanuel Gbeve, Chief Technology Officer of AIDEC, highlighted the center’s technical capabilities and regulatory compliance, stating: “We have secured authorisation from the Cyber Security Authority and implemented robust security measures to ensure we meet international standards for data protection and service delivery.”

A central focus of the AIDEC Digital Hub is addressing youth unemployment through job creation and skills development. The facility will provide employment opportunities for graduates and IT professionals while offering specialised training programmes in digital customer relations, IT support, and digital marketing. “BOSAGhave an ambitious five-year target of creating one million jobs in the BPO sector and companies like AIDEC will be leading this initiative to provide meaningful employment for young people,” Mr. Gowu stated.

The BPO center represents the latest development in AIDEC’s evolution since 2020, which has included establishing Ghana’s first AI Center of Excellence. Since 2021, AIDEC Digital has steadily expanded its footprint in Ghana’s tech ecosystem, beginning with the Africa Digital Forum and Tech Engineers Roundtable in Accra. In 2022, it sponsored the Technovate Awards and Fair to honor tech innovators across Africa.

The following year, it launched Africoursity (MOOC) and AIDECIA (ERP), both SaaS-based platforms, alongside a 30-seater Tech Lab for IT training and Ghana’s first AI Centre of Excellence for research. In 2024, AIDEC Academy was established to enhance IT education, followed by Tech NewsGlobal for technology updates. The stakeholders agreed that the success of Ghana’s BPO sector hinges on collaboration across the technology ecosystem. The establishment of BOSAG in November 2024 represents a strategic move to position Ghana as Africa’s premier BPO destination.

“This is not about competition; it is about collaboration. We need to work together to push this conversation forward and help businesses understand the potential of the BPO industry,” Kafui Amanfu, Executive Director of the Institute of ICT Professionals Ghana (IIPGH) noted.

Isaac Newton Acquah, National Project Coordinator for Ghana’s Tech Sector at the International Trade Centre, added: “It is going to be centers with excellence and experience, with BOSAG and IIPGH coming together as a community, that will allow us to lobby government locally and internationally to move the IT/BPO sector forward.”

Ecobank Look-Alike Suit: Does Sarkodie have a case?

0

Following reports that Ghanaian rapper Sarkodie has taken legal action against Ecobank Ghana for allegedly using a look-alike image of him in an advertisement without his consent, a wave of debate has sparked across social media platforms.

Many are asking the question: Does Sarkodie have a solid legal case?

To provide legal insight, Intellectual Property (IP) lawyer, Emmanuel Kantam Duut Esq., has shared some insights on the situation in an exclusive interview with GhanaWeb.

What the law says about image rights in Ghana

According to Duut, while Ghana has existing copyright and trademark laws, explicit legislation addressing image rights or likeness is currently absent.

“This is a very new course of action in Ghana. We’ve never seen such a case in our courts. Image rights, publicity rights, and privacy rights are not yet part of Ghana’s established legal framework. But this could be a pivotal opportunity to test and expand intellectual property law in the country,” he stated.

The Image vs. likeness dilemma

A critical aspect of the case hinges on whether the advertisement in question used Sarkodie’s actual image or simply someone who resembles him.

To build a viable legal argument, it must first be determined whether Ecobank used Sarkodie’s image or his likeness.

According to Duut, Ghana’s current intellectual property laws offer limited avenues for addressing such a situation.

The two most relevant areas are copyright and, by extension, image rights. Under copyright law, image rights may be implicated when someone uses a person’s image or likeness without consent.

“In the image which was indicated in Ecobank’s ad, it is very clear that that is not Sarkodie. Yes, it is very, very clear that that is not Sarkodie. So now you are not dwelling on the image of Sarkodie in this regard, whereupon Sarkodie can make very strong claims that indeed his image was used.

“But we are looking at the likeness of Sarkodie. So there’s an image or there’s a figure that seems to look like him, and it is based on that that he’s making the case against Ecobank,” Duut explained.

According to Duut, since the image used was not of Sarkodie himself but rather someone presumed to be his look-alike, Sarkodie’s legal team would need to argue that the individual in the advertisement indeed bears a recognizable resemblance to the artiste.

“When a celebrity’s likeness is used in a commercial context, it refers to the exploitation of their recognisable appearance, which can include facial features, expressions, or overall persona,” Duut said.

The key legal phrase here is “recognisable appearance”.

The court must determine whether the person depicted in the Ecobank ad evokes Sarkodie’s image to a degree that the public would reasonably associate it with him.

“Sarkodie would have to leave evidence, sufficient evidence to prove that there was a resemblance or there is a resemblance between the images being used in the ad to such an extent that it expresses the recognisable appearance of Sarkodie,” he said.

Ecobank’s possible defence

The bank’s advertisement carried the tagline “Looks can be deceiving.”

Given that no actual image of Sarkodie was used, and the ad did not explicitly state that the individual portrayed was meant to represent him, can the bank argue that it bears no liability?

“If they are trying to communicate to you that the image that you are looking at is not what you think it is, that means that by optical illusion, they have already drawn your attention to the likeness of the original image they are seeking to leverage upon to create the art,” Duut said.

By using a look-alike, the bank may be indirectly prompting viewers to associate the individual in the ad with the original person, potentially Sarkodie.

Therefore, Ecobank would need to argue that the person featured in the advertisement does not, in fact, resemble Sarkodie to a degree that would cause such an association.

“The first question that comes up is why, when you look at that image, what comes to mind, or who comes to mind when you look at the image? The foremost figure that comes to mind is the figure they are trying to tell you that the image isn’t. So if that is the figure they are trying to tell you that image they are projecting isn’t, then that means that there’s a high possibility that what they have expressed is a likeness of that figure. And that is what it means,” he said.

He added, “When you look at the hair, when you look at the beard, when you look at the polls, when you look at the face, does that constitute a recognisable appearance of Sarkodie?

“That is what would have to be determined by the court, and that is what Sarkodie would need compelling or sufficient evidence towards. On the other hand, the lawyers of Ecobank would also have to counter that “It doesn’t even look like Sarkodie.”

In summary

Sarkodie’s case seeks to break new ground in Ghana’s legal landscape and could set a precedent for how celebrity image and likeness rights are handled in the country.

The court’s decision may eventually come down to whether the public perceives the image used by Ecobank as a recognizable representation or misrepresentation of the rapper.

Sarkodie would need to demonstrate that the image used in the advertisement is indeed a look-alike of him, while the bank would be tasked with proving that the individual portrayed does not bear enough resemblance to be considered his likeness.

‘Let’s build a people-led salt and fishing industry in Ketu South’ – Journalist calls on lands minister

0

A broadcast journalist, Francis Vorsah, has called on the Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, to adopt a community-driven model proposed by Third World Network-Africa, which puts control of salt resources in locals and ensures women benefit directly in the Ketu South Municipality.

He noted that collectively they can build a public-led, community-partnered salt and fish farming industry that protects the environment, grows local businesses, and brings peace and prosperity to Ketu South.

The broadcast journalist stated that communities along the Keta Lagoon such as Adina, Amutinu, Agbozume, Salakope, Blekusu to Sonuto, through Kpedzakope, Agbevekope to Tokon have depended on salt mining, fishing, and coconut farming for decades and cannot be taken away from them.

The activities have over the years become the backbone of the local economy and a source of livelihood for women and youth but has since been taken over by the industrial salt operations at Adina rising tensions in the area, he stated.

“The industrial salt operations at Adina have taken over the lagoon, restricted access to land, water, and disrupted the very livelihoods that built these communities. Tensions never cease to rise,” he said.

In his open letter to the minister, and made available to GhanaWeb, Vorsah outlined possible ways that can help reduce the tensions within the communities to help address the issues for peace and stability.

He also called for a review in the current salt concession and place the lagoon under a people-first development framework, making recommendations on taking lessons from countries like Bolivia, where communities, not corporations, benefit from natural resources.

Also, he proposed that there should be the involvement of chiefs, the assembly, local producers, and experts to regulate and promote sustainable production.

The broadcast journalist further called for a blend of salt mining and fish farming to support livelihoods to enhance proper zoning and investment for increased employment and food supply.

“Hon Minister, I am not against salt mining. I am for a fair, inclusive model that leaves no one behind. Let’s protect the people. Let’s grow the local economy. Let’s turn Ketu South into a national model for peaceful, productive resource use” he concluded.

Read his full letter below:

OPEN LETTER TO HON. EMMANUEL ARMAH-KOFI BUAH, MINISTER FOR LANDS AND NATURAL RESOURCES: LET’S BUILD A PEOPLE-LED SALT AND FISHING INDUSTRY IN KETU SOUTH

Dear Hon. Minister,

The communities along the Keta Lagoon such as Adina, Amutinu, Agbozume, Salakope. From Blekusu to Sonuto through Kpedzakope, Agbevekope to Tokon have for decades depended on salt mining, fishing, and coconut farming.

These are not just activities; they are the backbone of our local economy and a source of livelihood for women and youth.

But today, industrial salt operations at Adina have taken over the lagoon, restricted access to land and water, and disrupted the very livelihoods that built these communities. Tensions never cease to rise.

Hon. Minister, there is a better way.

We can build a public-led, community-partnered salt and fish farming industry that protects the environment, grows local businesses, and brings peace and prosperity to Ketu South.

I propose the following:

1. Review the current salt concession and place the lagoon under a people-first development framework. Let’s take lessons from countries like Bolivia where communities, not corporations, benefit from natural resources.

2. Set up a Keta Lagoon Salt & Aquaculture Committee involving chiefs, the Assembly, local producers, and experts to regulate and promote sustainable production.

3. Adopt the community-driven model proposed by Third World Network-Africa, which puts control of salt resources in local hands and ensures women benefit directly.

4. Blend salt mining with fish farming. Let the lagoon support both livelihoods. It’s possible with proper zoning and investment, this can double our employment and food supply.

5. Support training, tools, and access to markets so our youth and women can thrive in salt and aquaculture, and the Assembly can earn the revenue it needs to develop our towns.

Hon. Minister, I am not against salt mining. I am for a fair, inclusive model that leaves no one behind. Let’s protect the people. Let’s grow the local economy. Let’s turn Ketu South into a national model for peaceful, productive resource use.

Channel IMF funds into agriculture to reset economy – Economist to government

Business strategist and financial analyst, Dr Daniel Armateye Anim Business strategist and financial analyst, Dr Daniel Armateye Anim

Business strategist and financial analyst, Dr Daniel Armateye Anim, has backed the government’s decision to prioritise agriculture in the 2025 budget, emphasizing its potential to reset the economy.

Commenting on the expected US$370 million from the International Monetary Fund (IMF), Dr Anim stated that directing these funds into agricultural projects could be a game changer.

Ghana and the IMF reached a staff-level agreement on Tuesday, April 15, 2025, following a review of the country’s progress on key policy reforms and economic targets.

This agreement paves the way for the release of a US$370 million tranche.

The Minister of Finance, Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, following the agreement, revealed that the funds would be directed toward resetting the economy in line with President Mahama’s economic vision.

In an interview with GhanaWeb Business, Dr Anim highlighted the importance of this strategic move in stabilising the economy.

He advised the government to prioritise the country’s agricultural sector using the incoming funds to improve living standards, boost food sustainability, and create jobs along the agribusiness value chain.

“The 2025 budget aims to reset the economy with agriculture as a key driver. If that is the case, then allocating the expected $370 million from the IMF to agricultural projects could significantly enhance food sustainability, create business opportunities, and generate employment along the agribusiness value chain,” he said.

He added, “This strategic move can help stabilize the economy and significantly improve the living standards of the youth.”

Paramilitaries declare rival government in Sudan

0

More than 12 million people have been driven from their homes over the two-year conflict More than 12 million people have been driven from their homes over the two-year conflict

Sudan’s paramilitaries have declared the formation of a rival government to the country’s armed forces, two years into a war that has become the world’s largest humanitarian crisis.

The leader of the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), Mohamed Hamdan “Hemedti” Dagalo, said the group was “building the only realistic future for Sudan”.

The announcement came as London hosted an high-level conference to mark the second anniversary of the conflict, where the UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy called for “a pathway to peace”.

Fighting raged on, with the army saying it had bombed RSF positions outside the city of el-Fasher, forcing hundreds of thousands to flee the Zamzam refugee camp.

Hemedti said the RSF was building a “state of law” and not a state ruled by individuals.

“We do not seek domination, but unity. We believe that no tribe, region, or religion holds a monopoly over Sudanese identity,” his statement on Telegram read.

He added that his government would provide essential services such as education and healthcare to not only RSF-controlled areas, but the whole country.

More than 400 people have been killed in recent attacks by the RSF, according to the UN, citing “credible sources”.

Two years into the war, both the army and RSF have been accused of war crimes, including genocide and mass sexual violence.

Hemedti has been locked in a power struggle with Sudan’s army chief, Gen Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, since 15 April 2023, creating a humanitarian crisis that has claimed more than 150,000 lives and displaced more than 12 million people.

The latest fighting in the capital of North Darfur, el-Fasher, has forced tens of thousands of civilians from the Zamzam refugee camp to walk 70km (43 miles) to the town of Tawila, according to medical charity MSF.

Many arrived severely dehydrated and some children are reported to have died of thirst.

Humanitarian agencies have reported famine-like conditions facing more than 700,000 people in temporary camps around el-Fasher, with security threats and roadblocks thwarting the delivery of critical aid.

During an international meeting on Tuesday, the UK promised an extra £120m ($159m) worth of food and medical assistance, urging the world not to turn its back on Sudan.

“Many have given up on Sudan – that is wrong – it’s morally wrong when we see so many civilians beheaded, infants as young as one subjected to sexual violence, more people facing famine than anywhere else in the world… We simply cannot look away,” Lammy said.

The conference also called for an immediate and permanent ceasefire, but the African Union has said it will not allow the country to be partitioned by the army and the RSF.

Supreme Court adjourns injunction case on CJ’s removal to May 6

0

The Supreme Court has adjourned again, hearing of the application seeking to injunct the President and Council of State from determining whether there is a prima facie case in the petitions seeking the removal of the Chief Justice.

One of the five Justices presiding over the case, His Lordship Samuel Asiedu, was absent when the case was called. Presiding Judge, Her Ladyship Henrietta Mensah Bonsu, explained that they “have had problems and for unavoidable reasons have to adjourn.”

She thus adjourned the case to May 6.

Meanwhile, Attorney General Dr. Dominic Ayine has rejected calls for President John Dramani Mahama to hold on to proceedings for the determination of a Prima Facie case on the petitions for the removal of the Chief Justice.

This is in response to a statement by Godfred Yeboah Dame, the plaintiff’s lawyer in the case challenging the processes for the determination of the prima facie, that the President is enjoined by the injunction filed to halt all proceedings relating to the petition.

In an interview with the press on Wednesday, April 16, after court proceedings, Dr. Dominic Ayine argued that the President cannot be enjoined from undertaking his constitutional duty.

Dr Serebour shares challenges of doctors working at Bawku

0

President of the Ghana Medical Association, Dr Frank Serebour President of the Ghana Medical Association, Dr Frank Serebour

The President of the Ghana Medical Association, (GMA) Dr Frank Serebour, has disclosed that medical doctors working at Bawku are grappling with extreme emotional stress, fear of being attacked and stress leading to widespread absenteeism.

Speaking in a recent interview on JoyNews, he noted that the situation had drastically affected healthcare delivery in the area.

“The doctors work under extreme emotional stress and fear. If you speak to them, you realise that most of them are not themselves and they will tell you that their output has really gone down. So, what is happening is that for some of them, even going to work is a problem.

“Absenteeism is something that is very much rife and a few of them have decided to leave. So, we have some who have left, and they are currently in Accra, in Kumasi and they are refusing to go back. What is also happening is that there are some of them who are in administrative positions, and they are unable to enforce any discipline,” he remarked.

Dr Serebour cited instances where some hospital administrators seeking to enforce discipline were targeted.

“If a worker doesn’t come to work and you decide that you even want to take this priority action against the worker, the next day, your photograph is plastered all over and you are threatened that if you don’t take care, you’ll be the next target. We’ve had doctors whose homes have been raided and riddled with bullets and so they have to seek police protection.

“In the past, Bawku used to be one of the places where regardless of even the issues doctors were accepting postings, but recently nobody’s agreeing to accept any postings,” he remarked.

The president of GMA further disclosed that some medical doctors had fled the town due to the ongoing conflict.

“As of last month, we have two doctors who have left, one is now in Accra. At the moment he is jobless because we’ve not been able to secure posting for him at the moment.

“Some have decided to move their families away whilst they are still there delivering service,” he added.

The protracted conflict in the area has claimed several lives, threatening socio-economic development in the Upper East Region.

‘Let Communities Benefit From Your Mining Operations’

0

Collins Dauda

The Parliamentary Select Committee on Land and Natural Resources has urged mining companies to ensure communities in which they operate benefit from their mining operations.

Chairman of the committee, Alhaji Collins Dauda, the MP for Asutifi South, made this statement when the committee toured Newmont Ahafo South and North mining sites to acquaint themselves with the operations of the mines.

The two-day tour organised by the Chamber of Mines allowed members to have firsthand knowledge of various operations of the mine, see various corporate social responsibility projects and ask probe issues of concern.

On the first day, the members toured Newmont Ahafo South Mine (Kenyasi), where the mine has been operating for almost 20 years. They were briefed on various stages of operations and visited pits and reclaimed lands where mining activities took place but are now covered by green vegetation.

At Ahafo North (Terchire, Adrogbaa), where mine construction is still ongoing and commercial gold production is expected to begin in the second half of 2025, members observed various installation activities and expressed satisfaction and appreciation for the heavy capital investment.

They were informed that the Ahafo project has an expected life span of 14 years but has the potential to go beyond.

Addressing the management and staff of the company after the tour, Mr. Dauda, urged the company to make job creation a priority for the youth.

‘The people expect to see development, so create jobs for the youth. In all your operations, don’t forget about job creation. He further urged the company to ensure the provision of more social amenities such as roads, adding, ‘Some of the roads we have seen are in bad shape. You must help improve the state of the roads.

We don’t want to see Kenyasi become like Obuasi and Tarkwa. It cannot be business as usual, so I entreat you to provide development for the people because this is the only way they can benefit from their natural resources,” he added.

Briefing the committee members, General Manager of Ahafo North, Charles Bissue explained that all five affected communities under Ahafo North, including Sosuanso, Terchire, and Adrogbaa, among others, are all benefitting from the same social responsibility projects under NADeF (Newmont Ahafo Development Foundation), saying resettlement housing units are currently under construction.

A member of the committee, Samuel Atta-Mills, MP for Kommenda Edina Eguafo Abrem, expressed satisfaction with the knowledge gained, saying it will inform them on issues affecting mining when it comes to bills concerning mining companies in Parliament.

A 15-year-old male Basic Education Certificate Examniation (BECE) candidate has been slashed to death with a machete by a 17-year-old at Akwapem Adukrom in the Eastern Region.

According to 3news.com, the two, who were childhood friends, were engaged in an argument over GH¢10, which escalated into violence.

“The suspect slapped me and demanded why I had slapped a member of his gang days ago over GH¢10.00. I told my friend who is now deceased what transpired. He demanded we look for the suspect and retaliate. The suspect came with cutlass amid sounds from a nearby taxi and slashed my friend on the shoulder. I had to run for my life,” an eyewitness said, according to the report.

High demand for gold driving investor interest – Dr Manteaw

0

Co-Chair of the Ghana Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative, Dr Steve Manteaw Co-Chair of the Ghana Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative, Dr Steve Manteaw

The Co-Chair of the Ghana Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (GHEITI), Dr Steve Manteaw, has revealed that despite the ongoing brouhaha between the government and Gold Fields over the Damang Mine, there is a surge in investor interest in gold mining in the area.

He attributes this to the precious metal’s growing status as a store of value.

According to him, investor interest varies depending on the commodity in question.

He noted that gold has increasingly become a safe haven for investors, regardless of a mine’s geographical location.

Earlier this week, the government rejected the renewal of the Damang Mining Lease for Gold Fields Ghana Limited, citing the mine’s failure to meet the necessary requirements for the lease to be extended upon its April 18, 2025 expiration.

In an exclusive interview with GhanaWeb Business, Dr Manteaw stated that the ongoing disagreement between the government and Gold Fields is unlikely to have any significant impact on the market.

“There is a mad rush for gold, and so, even as the discussions are ongoing and the decision has been made not to renew the lease, I wouldn’t be surprised if other investors have already lined up to take over that mine. Gold is the commodity of the moment.

“Investors now understand that interest depends on the commodity involved, and gold, as I’ve indicated, is in extremely high demand. It has become a reliable store of value in recent times,” he added.

His comments come at a time when Ghana’s mining sector is experiencing shifts in ownership and regulatory changes, driven largely by fluctuating commodity prices and global market trends.

“He wanted to turn himself into Okudzeto, but he can never be like Okudzeto” — Kwadwo slams Fordjour

0

According to a report from GhanaWeb, Kwadwo Twum Boafo, a key figure within the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has raised concerns over what he sees as a pattern of persistent criticism from the New Patriotic Party (NPP) directed at the administration of President John Dramani Mahama.

He believes the opposition’s frequent allegations are fueled by a desire to uncover scandals where none exist.

Boafo pointed to the recent controversy involving Airmed as an example, accusing the NPP of making deliberate efforts to discredit the current government.

He called on the opposition party to abandon such tactics, emphasizing that the current leadership has maintained a clean record since assuming office.

Rather than attempting to fabricate wrongdoing, Boafo suggested the NPP should cooperate with the government for the sake of national progress.

In his response to recent accusations made by Reverend John Ntim Fordjour, the MP for Assin South, Boafo dismissed attempts to link the administration to drug trafficking or illegal financial dealings.

He criticized Fordjour’s approach, suggesting it was a failed attempt to imitate the investigative style of North Tongu MP, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, who was known for exposing misconduct during the previous administration.

Boafo challenged Fordjour to take any credible information he may have to the appropriate investigative bodies, including national intelligence and the inter-ministerial security task force.

“He wanted to turn himself into Okudzeto, but he can never be like Okudzeto. He doesn’t have any evidence; all he does is spread scandal,” he said.

He further accused the MP of hiding behind parliamentary privilege to avoid accountability and questioned his willingness to cooperate with law enforcement if summoned.

Tema East NDC appeals to party to intervene in Landing Beach Committee formation

0

By Laudia Sawer

Tema, April 16, GNA – The Tema East Constituency Executive of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has appealed to the party’s national officers to intervene in a misunderstanding regarding the formation of Landing Beach Committees.

A letter signed by Mr Seidu Abdulal, Tema East Constituency Secretary, addressed to the NDC National Chairman, and made available to the Ghana News Agency (GNA), stated that “Your swift intervention in this matter is urgently needed to calm our nerves and assist our brothers.”

It added that the Minister for Fisheries and Aquaculture sent a notice to all members of parliament with fishing activities in their constituencies, asking them to liaise with their constituencies to form Landing Beach Committees and submit the names to her office.

According to the executives, Mr. Isaac Ashia Odamtten, the MP for Tema East, “disregarded the minister’s advice and formed the Landing Beach Committees on his own (suo motu). The constituency secretary petitioned the minister upon hearing that the MP had formed the Landing Beach Committees without informing the constituency.”

It added that the said petition was referred to Mr. Rockson Defeamakpor, the Majority Chief Whip who is also the MP for South Dayi, who subsequently, met the constituency executives and other stakeholders in the fishing industry in Tema East who had not been consulted, including the National Vice Chairman of the Canoe Owners Association of Ghana, on Monday, 24th February 2025.

It added that “In the said meeting, it came to light that the MP did not consult the constituency and the key stakeholders who are involved in fishing in Tema East. It was, however, agreed that the number of landing beaches in the constituency (10 landing beaches) be divided to satisfy both the constituency and the office of the MP. That is, the constituency would take and form five (5) Landing Beach Committees, while the office of the MP would also take and form five (5) Landing Beach Committees.”

The letter added that it was also agreed that both the constituency and the office of the MP would each take one committee to satisfy the nomadic fisherfolks the Fantes, who are involved in fishing in Tema East).

It stated that after the arbitration and agreement with the Majority Chief Whip, the MP expressed dissatisfaction and presented his sharing formula, in which he stated that the constituency would take three landing beaches, and his office would take seven.

“Hon. Defeamakpor again intervened and suggested that we accept the MP’s formula to ensure peace and to make sure our fisherfolks receive fuel to carry out their business.

To our surprise, the MP proceeded to submit 10 Landing Beach Committees instead of the seven he had proposed and submitted the same to the minister without informing the constituency.”

The executives expressed worry that the agitation from the canoe owners and branch executives, whose primary concern was fishing, was becoming unbearable; therefore, their call on the NDC national chairman to swiftly intervene to calm their nerves.

According to them, “The enormity of the excesses of our MP is completely staggering and requires the attention and intervention of the party. In the interim, we respectfully request your indulgence to address the issue of the LBCs with the necessary urgency. At a more opportune time, we will bring to your attention how our MP has weaponised his office and divided the constituency, particularly along tribal lines.”

Accra East ECG Commissions New Feeder At Teshie New England

0

THE ELECTRICITY Company of Ghana (ECG) has commissioned a new 11KV feeder at Teshie New England, a significant step towards enhancing power supply in the Accra East region.

The newly installed feeder is aimed at improving the quality and reliability of power supply, significantly reducing instances of power outages and low voltage that customers in Teshie, Tseaddo, Chain Homes and surrounding areas have been experiencing.

The Accra East Region aims to enhance customer satisfaction and experience through various development projects that address their electricity needs.

The new feeder is part of an initiative to reduce downtime and enhance the overall customer experience in Teshie New England and nearby communities.

Accra East regional Manager of ECG, Bismark Otoo, explained that the construction of the feeder aligns with ECG’s commitment to providing safe, quality, and reliable electricity to consumers.

He indicated that the existing feeder serving the area was overloaded, resulting in frequent outages and low voltage, stating that “with this new feeder, some customers will be transferred to relieve the load on the old one, meaning they will no longer experience frequent outages and low voltages.”

He emphasised that the Accra East Region is dedicated to promoting local economic growth by ensuring stable power supply across the area.

He further stated that the commissioning of the feeder would provide convenience to customers reliant on electricity for their businesses, thereby boosting economic growth in the region.

Mr. Otoo noted that this initiative would also facilitate quicker fault detection and isolation, enabling engineers to restore power swiftly in the event of disruptions.

He mentioned that the Accra East Region has undertaken several projects to improve service delivery and ensure customer satisfaction.

Residents who attended the commissioning event expressed their gratitude for the initiative, highlighting the positive impact it will have on their daily lives.

Sege residents struggle to access potable water

0

By Opesika Tetteh Puplampu

Sege, Apr 16, GNA – Residents of Sege, in the Ada West District, Greater Accra Region, are facing severe challenges due to erratic water supply, leaving many residents struggling to access clean and safe water for daily chores.

Some residents have therefore resorted to fetching water from stagnant water sources, sharing it with animals.

The situation, which has persisted for several weeks, has forced residents in areas such as Sege township, Bornikope, Koluedor, and Toflokpo to resort to alternative sources, including boreholes, sachet water, and, in some cases, untreated water from open wells and streams.

They noted that prior to the crisis, they received for free the byproduct from a sachet water factory, which they used for bathing and washing of their clothes, but due to the current situation, the workers of the factory were selling the water byproduct to them.

Mr. Ernest Kugblenu, Assembly Member for the Sege-Koni Electoral Area, speaking to the Ghana News Agency (GNA), said measures were being put in place to alleviate the plight of the residents.

Mr. Kugblenu revealed that he has collaborated with the Member of Parliament (MP) for Sege Constituency, Mr. Daniel Kisseh Bassey, to arrange for water tankers to distribute water to affected communities at a subsidised price.

He cautioned residents, saying, “I would like to inform everyone that the water being distributed is not treated, and therefore, it must be boiled before use.”

Mr. Ezekiel Awinyan, the water system manager at the Community Water and Sanitation Agency, attributed the water supply issues to a damaged transformer and other technical challenges at the water station serving the area.

Several residents expressed frustration over the unreliable water supply, urging the Community Water and Sanitation Agency and other relevant authorities to swiftly address the situation.

“We can go for days without a single drop of water from our taps. This is affecting our hygiene and daily activities,” said Madam Florence Alimo, a resident of Sege.

Meanwhile, residents are appealing to the MP and the Ada West District Assembly to intervene and ensure stable and affordable access to water, especially during the dry season.

US tariffs, trade war, and Ghana’s position

0

US imposes 10% tariff on imports US imposes 10% tariff on imports

If you’ve been following the news, you’ve probably heard the word “tariffs” more times recently than ever before.

This is because US President Donald Trump imposed aggressive tariffs on trade between the US and other countries in April 2025.

Trump introduced a 10% tariff on most imports from over 60 countries, including Ghana.

In this GhanaWeb Business article, let’s explore what tariffs are and how they affect trade.

Tariffs are essentially taxes imposed by governments on imported goods. They are often used to protect domestic industries, raise revenue, or address trade imbalances.

This makes foreign goods more expensive, encouraging consumers to buy domestically produced items.

How does this affect Ghana?

Even though Ghana is not a major exporter to the US, unlike countries such as China, it exports key commodities like cocoa (used in chocolate), gold, oil, and various fruits and agricultural products.

Because of this, these exports could incur higher costs when entering the US market, making them less competitive and affecting the country’s export revenue.

In addition, Ghana’s exports could decline if global markets slow down. For example, if global gold prices fall, Ghana will be significantly affected.

Furthermore, Ghana is heavily import-dependent. As a result, global inflation could make imports more expensive for the country.

This may also impact Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) into Ghana, potentially affecting overall investments.

The US has declared a 90-day pause before the full implementation of the tariff, but it is prudent that Ghanaian authorities act proactively to address the issue.

Last week, the Ministries of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Agribusiness, and Industry met with the US Ambassador to Ghana, Virginia Palmer, to seek further clarification on the tariffs.

The outcome of the meeting clarified that the tariffs are not directly targeted at Ghana.

However, certain sectors, including oil, gas, and energy-related exports, are exempt from these tariffs.

Experts have also called on the government to encourage self-reliance by boosting production and manufacturing to reduce the impact of these external measures.

Meanwhile, China and the US have been going back and forth with tariff impositions of over 100%.

This has disrupted global markets and led to a drop in global crude oil prices.

Drama in court as narcotics suspect accuses police officer of demanding GH¢4,000 bribe

0

A 27-year-old trader, Emmanuel Kofi Asare, has accused a Crime Officer at the La Police Station of allegedly demanding a bribe of GH¢4,000 to settle his case outside the court.

According to a GHOne TV report, Asare, who has been charged with unlawful possession of narcotic plants, appeared in court on April 15, 2025, as part of the legal process.

However, he made an accusation against the Crime Officer handling the case, directly addressing the trial judge, Mrs Susanna Edufful.

Asare alleged that the officer had demanded the GH¢4,000 bribe during his arrest at La Wireless on March 24, 2025. His inability to provide the amount, he claimed, resulted in his prosecution.

He further stated that he was arrested alongside a friend, who managed to pay the police the requested amount and was subsequently released.

“A 27-year-old trader, Emmanuel Kofi Asare, has dropped a bombshell at the Circuit Court in Accra, accusing the police officers who arrested him of bribery and corruption. Asare, charged with unlawful possession of narcotic plants, claimed that the police demanded GH¢4,000 each from him and his friend to settle the case.

“His friend, whose name was not disclosed, allegedly made the payment and secured his freedom. However, Asare’s GH¢1,500, which was insufficient, was rejected, leading to his prosecution in court,” GHOne TV reported in a social media post on April 15, 2025.

Following these allegations, the judge has ordered the Crime Officer at the La Police Station to appear in court and respond to the claims made against him.

Asare pleaded not guilty to the charge and was granted bail in the sum of GH¢50,000, with two sureties backed by documentation worth the amount.

The case has been adjourned to May 7, 2025.

Mining expert chides Gold Fields workers over ‘job losses’ claims

Chairman of the Ghana Extractives Transparency Initiative, Dr Steve Manteaw Chairman of the Ghana Extractives Transparency Initiative, Dr Steve Manteaw

The Chairman of the Ghana Extractives Transparency Initiative, Dr Steve Manteaw, has said he cannot fathom why workers of Gold Fields are complaining about job losses when there have been similar incidents in the past.

He said; “Gold Fields has been laying off workers but for those people who were laid off by Gold Fields, do their lives not matter? I’m just struggling to understand because the workers themselves are aware that, for some time now, Gold Fields has been laying off workers.”

The natural resource governance expert made these comments in an exclusive interview with GhanaWeb Business following statements by the Ghana Mine Workers’ Union that the government’s failure to renew Gold Fields’ Damang Mining Lease would result in job losses.

The union emphasised that many members risk losing their incomes and livelihoods if the lease is not renewed.

The General Secretary of the Ghana Mine Workers’ Union, Abdul-Moomin Gbana, cautioned that the union would have no choice but to organise a protest march to demand compensation for lost earnings.

The decision not to renew the mining lease coincides with the upcoming expiration of the current 30-year lease, initially granted on April 18, 1995 and set to end on April 18, 2025.

The government has explained that this decision aligns with its broader mission to reshape the nation’s economic landscape.

Racially charged row between Musk and South Africa over Starlink

0

The tussle between Starlink boss Elon Musk and South Africa over the company’s failure to launch in the country stems from the nation’s black empowerment laws, and could be one factor behind the diplomatic row between the US and Africa’s most industrialised nation.

To his more than 219 million followers on his social media platform X, Mr Musk made the racially charged claim that his satellite internet service provider was “not allowed to operate in South Africa simply because I’m not black”.

But the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (Icasa) – a regulatory body in the telecommunications and broadcasting sectors – told the BBC that Starlink had never submitted an application for a licence.

As for the foreign ministry, it said the company was welcome to operate in the country “provided there’s compliance with local laws”.

So what are the legal sticking points?

To operate in South Africa, Starlink needs to obtain network and service licences, which both require 30% ownership by historically disadvantaged groups.

This mainly refers to South Africa’s majority black population, which was shut out of the economy during the racist system of apartheid.

White-minority rule ended in 1994 after Nelson Mandela and his African National Congress (ANC) came to power.

Since then, the ANC has made “black empowerment” a central pillar of its economic policy in an attempt to tackle the racial injustices of the past.

This has included adopting legislation requiring investors to give local black firms a 30% stake in their businesses in South Africa.

Mr Musk – who was born in South Africa in 1971 before moving to Canada in the late 1980s and then to the US, where he became the world’s richest man – appears to see this as the main stumbling block for Starlink to operate in the country.

Starlink, in a written submission to Icasa, said the black empowerment provisions in legislation excluded “many” foreign satellite operators from the South African market, according to local news site TechCentral.

But foreign ministry spokesperson Clayson Monyela challenged this view in March, saying on X that more than 600 US companies, including computing giant Microsoft, were operating in South Africa in compliance with its laws – and “thriving”.

Are there attempts to end the impasse?

Mr Musk’s Starlink has a potential ally in South Africa’s Communications Minister Solly Malatsi.

He comes from the Democratic Alliance (DA) – the second-biggest party in South Africa – which joined a coalition government after the ANC failed to get a parliamentary majority in last year’s election.

The DA is a fierce critic of the current black empowerment laws, claiming they have fuelled cronyism and corruption with investors forced to link up with ANC-connected companies to operate in South Africa or to win state contracts.

Last October, Malatsi hinted that he was looking for a way to circumvent the 30% black equity requirement, saying he intended to issue a “policy direction” to Icasa with the aim of clarifying “the position on the recognition of equity equivalent programmes”.

In simple terms, Malatsi seemed to be suggesting that Starlink would not a require black business partner in South Africa, though it would have to invest in social programmes aimed at benefiting black people – especially the poor.

But some six months later, Malatsi has failed to change the policy, with a spokesperson for his department telling the BBC that their legal team was still looking into the matter.

It seems the communications minister may be facing political resistance from ANC lawmakers in parliament.

Khusela Diko, the chairperson of the parliamentary communications committee to which Malatsi is accountable, warned him earlier this month that “transformation” in the tech sector was non-negotiable, appearing to oppose giving Mr Musk’s Starlink any special treatment.

Diko said that “the law is clear on compliance” and, crucially added, that “cutting corners and circumvention is not an option – least of all to appease business interests”.

Diko’s tough position comes as no surprise, as relations between the South African government and the US have hit rock bottom during US President Donald Tump’s second term.

Why have relations deteriorated?

Mr Musk, part of Trump’s inner circle, has railed on X against what he calls “racist ownership laws” in South Africa, while the US president has threatened to boycott the G20 summit of world leaders to be held in the country later this year.

“How could we be expected to go to South Africa for the very important G20 Meeting when Land Confiscation and Genocide is the primary topic of conversation? They are taking the land of white Farmers, and then killing them and their families,” Trump said on his social media platform Truth Social.

His claims of a genocide against white farmers have been widely dismissed as false, but they echo those of the tech billionaire.

Last month, Mr Musk accused “a major” political party in South Africa – a reference to the radical Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), which came fourth in last year’s election – of “actively promoting white genocide”.

“A month ago, the South African government passed a law legalizing taking property from white people at will with no payment,” Mr Musk said.

“Where is the outrage? Why is there no coverage by the legacy media?

South Africa did pass a law earlier this year allowing the government to seize property without compensation, but only in certain cases.

Nevertheless, Musk links these issues to his failure to get a licence for Starlink.

“Starlink can’t get a license to operate in South Africa simply because I’m not black.” he said back in March.

His hard-line stance comes despite meeting South Africa’s president in New York last year.

At the time, Mr Musk described the meeting as “great”, while President Cyril Ramaphosa said he had tried to persuade the billionaire to invest in South Africa.

“Meeting Elon Musk was a clear intention of mine… Some people call it bromance, so it’s a whole process of rekindling his affection and connection with South Africa,” Ramaphosa told South Africa’s public broadcaster, SABC.

But he added that nothing had yet been “bedded down”.

“As it happens with potential investors, you have to court them; you have to be talking to them, and you’ve got to be demonstrating to them that there is a conducive environment for them to invest. So, we will see how this turns out,” the president said.

“He is South African-born and South Africa is his home, and I would want to see him coming to South Africa for a visit, tour or whatever.”

But the “bromance” has long ended, with Mr Musk appearing to move closer to South Africa’s right wing.

Has Starlink had problems elsewhere in Africa?

Lesotho appears to have bowed to pressure from the Trump administration by announcing on Monday that it had given a 10-year licence to Starlink.

It comes after Trump imposed a 50% tariff on imports from Lesotho, threatening thousands of jobs in the country.

Trump subsequently paused that for 90 days, but a 10% tariff still came into effect on 5 April.

Some reports suggest the Lesotho Communications Authority (LCA) cleared regulatory hurdles to stave off the threat of a further tariff hike by granting Starlink a licence.

However, this was denied by Foreign Minister Lejone Mpotjoane.

“The licence application and the tariff negotiations should not be conflated,” he said.

The decision to grant the licence was condemned by civil society group Section Two, which raised concern that Starlink Lesotho was 100% foreign-owned and lacked local ownership, South Africa’s GroundUp news site reported.

“Such actions can only be described as a betrayal – a shameful sell-out by a government that appears increasingly willing to place foreign corporate interests above the democratic will and long-term developmental needs of the people of Lesotho,” Section Two’s co-ordinator Kananelo Boloetse was quoted as saying.

During public consultations over Starlink’s application, Vodacom Lesotho had also argued that Mr Musk’s company should establish local shareholding before receiving a licence, the Space in Africa website reported.

“These concerns highlight broader tensions surrounding Starlink’s operations across Africa, particularly the growing demand for local partnerships,” it added.

Starlink also appears to be seeking an exemption in Namibia from the requirement to bring in a local partner.

Namibia is a former colony of Germany, and was under the rule of South Africa’s white-minority regime until it gained independence in 1990.

It has more stringent requirements than its post-apartheid neighbour, with businesses operating in Namibia needing to be 51% locally owned.

The Communications Regulatory Authority of Namibia (Cran) told the BBC that Starlink had submitted an application for a telecommunications service licence in June 2024.

Cran said that while this process usually took between three to six months, a decision had not yet been taken because it “must first wait for the ownership exemption application to be finalised” by Namibia’s information and communication technology minister.

How big is Starlink’s Africa presence?

Starlink is now operating in more than 20 African countries, with Somalia, hit by an Islamist insurgency, giving it a 10-year licence on 13 April, two days before Lesotho’s decision to do so.

“We welcome Starlink’s entry to Somalia. This initiative aligns with our vision to deliver affordable and accessible internet services to all Somalis, regardless of where they live,” Technology Minister Mohamed Adam Moalim Ali said.

Starlink aims to provide high-speed internet services to remote or underserved areas, making it a potential game-changer for rural areas unable to access traditional forms of connectivity such as mobile broadband and fibre.

This is because Starlink, rather than relying on fibre optics or cables to transmit data, uses a network of satellites in low Earth orbit. Because they are closer to the ground, they have faster transmission speeds than traditional satellites.

Nigeria was the first African state to allow Starlink to operate, in 2023. The company has since grown into the second-biggest internet service provider in Africa’s most-populous country.

But Starlink still has no presence in South Africa – the continent’s most industrialised nation.

Enterprising locals had found a way to connect to the service by using regional roaming packages purchased in countries where the service was available.

Starlink put an end to this last year while Icasa also warned local companies that those found providing the service illegally could face a hefty fine.

Yet with an estimated 20% of South Africans not having access to the internet at all – many in rural areas – it could prove beneficial for both Starlink and the government to reach a compromise.

For Starlink it could prove a lucrative market, while satellite broadband may help the government achieve its goal of providing universal internet access by 2030.

On Monday, Ramaphosa appointed former deputy finance minister Mcebisi Jonas as his special envoy to the US, signalling his determination to mend relations with the Trump administration.

But Jonas’ appointment faced a backlash in right-wing circles, as in a 2020 speech he called Trump a “racist homophobe” and a “narcissistic right-winger”.

In an interview on the Money Show podcast, Jonas said that he made the comments when he was not in government and “people move on”.

He acknowledged that it would be a “long slog to rebuild understanding”, but added that South Africa’s relationship with the US was “fundamentally important” and he was determined to improve it.

Jonas’ comments are not surprising as the US is a major trading partner for South Africa. With Trump having threatened a 30% tariff on its goods, Ramaphosa cannot afford to see relations continuing to deteriorate and the economy taking further knocks.

“They Sang Hosanna for Bawumia, Now They Call Him a Failure” – Kwesi Pratt Fires at NPP Critics

0

Veteran journalist and political commentator, Kwesi Pratt Jr., has voiced strong concerns over what he sees as a sudden and dramatic shift in loyalty among New Patriotic Party (NPP) members regarding Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as reported by Ghana Web.

Speaking on Peace FM’s Kokrokoo on April 15, 2025, Pratt questioned how individuals who previously championed Bawumia’s candidacy are now at the forefront of criticizing him.

He described the turn of events as shocking, especially coming from prominent party figures who once hailed Bawumia as the ideal choice to lead the NPP into the 2024 elections.

“It’s the same people who were singing Hosanna for him who are now the loudest in their condemnation,” Pratt said, expressing disbelief at the shift in narrative.

He singled out Deputy Communications Officer Ernest Owusu-Bempah, who has recently blamed Bawumia for the party’s defeat, calling into question the consistency and motives of such critics.

Pratt found it particularly troubling that these figures, once defensive of former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, have also begun pointing fingers at him for the NPP’s loss.

Pratt also referenced party stalwarts like Boakye Agyarko, who have advocated for a return to the party’s foundational values, while others push for Kennedy Agyapong to take the reins of leadership.

In the 2024 general elections, the Electoral Commission declared John Mahama of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) as president-elect with over 6.3 million votes. Bawumia secured just over 4.6 million, marking a significant loss for the NPP.

Pratt believes the party’s current internal divisions could derail any hopes of regaining power in the near future if not urgently addressed.

One Million Coders programme key to Ghana’s digital future – Mahama

0

President John Dramani Mahama has described the newly launched One Million Coders Programme as a foundational step toward Ghana’s transformation into a digital economy and a bold declaration of the country’s intent to lead in the global tech space.

Speaking at the official launch of the programme on Wednesday, April 16, 2025, President Mahama emphasised the strategic importance of the initiative, which aims to train one million Ghanaians in key digital and coding skills over the coming years.

“We are not just launching a programme, but we are laying the foundation for a blue economy. We are declaring with bold purpose that Ghana is ready to lead in the digital age,” he stated.

The president noted that the programme is not merely a campaign promise fulfilled, but rather a critical component of the government’s broader Reset Ghana Agenda, which seeks to reposition the country for inclusive, innovation-driven development.

“We are saying to our youth, community, and the continent and the world that the future is here and we will be part of shaping it.

“It is not a fulfilled promise but is a strategic pillar in our reset Ghana agenda, designed to equip Ghanians with critical digital skills for the 21st Century life and work,” he added.

NDC will stop Kumasi Mayor if… – Odike

0

Founder and leader of the United Progressive Party (UPP), Akwasi Addai Odike, has expressed skepticism about the sustainability of recent directives issued by the Mayor of Kumasi, Richard Ofori Agyemang Boadi.

Odike warned that the Mayor’s enforcement measures — including threats to flog defiant traders and plans to seize and slaughter stray cattle — would likely be derailed by political interests.

Speaking on Adom FM’s morning show Dwaso Nsem, Odike argued that once the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) perceives these actions as politically damaging, the Mayor will be forced to abandon them.

“Knowing the kind of country we are living in, the Mayor will not be allowed to do his work. If the NDC realises this is reducing their chances of winning the next election, they will stop the Mayor. Partisanship is destroying this country. We need a system that enforces laws, not one controlled by political convenience,” he said.

Odike stressed that true national progress hinges on institutional reform and a commitment to upholding the rule of law, regardless of political considerations.

His remarks come in response to a press conference held on Monday, April 14, where Mayor Boadi — popularly known as King Zuba — announced plans to seize and slaughter stray cattle found in the metropolis starting May 1.

He also issued a stern two-week ultimatum to traders occupying pavements and roadsides, warning of serious consequences, including physical punishment, for those who defy the directive.

Stonebwoy To Raise Funds For Pediatric Clinics

Stonebwoy

Celebrated Ghanaian reggae/dancehall artiste, Stonebwoy, has been commended by the HoodTalk Music Festival organisers for agreeing to perform for free at the event, which is set for May 9 at Accra’s Independence Square and aims to raise $14 million towards the construction of five pediatric clinics.

In an attempt to help the underprivileged in society, Stonebwoy chose to play for free at the HoodTalk Music Festival though it is not compulsory for artistes to take up corporate social responsibilities (CSR).

Through his charity organisation, Livingstone Foundation, Stonebwoy has supported a number of institutions and communities, with its main focus on equal access to education, accident survivor healthcare, community advocacy and youth empowerment.

BEATWAVES gathered that the HoodTalk Music Festival which has Stonebwoy as the headline act will be broadcast live to more than 250 countries.

“HoodTalk Music Festival is a movement for health, peace, and possibility—a moment to elevate your voice for the next generation,” the organisers said.

It is perhaps among the well-organised musical concerts in Ghana where the very best of artistes with smashing hits are assembled on one platform to entertain thousands of music enthusiasts.

Organised by DreamChild Foundation in partnership with Virtual Hub, the organisers indicated that Stonebwoy’s goals are to help the underprivileged and advance healthcare in the country.

The organisers said HoodTalk has evolved from a grassroots initiative into a globally recognised festival with a purpose.

The 2025 theme, “Connecting Music, Heritage, and Humanity,” empowers youth, celebrates culture, and amplifies the collective voice of artists and creatives.

Dubbed “The 2025 HoodTalk Unity Edition”, Stonebwoy will use the event to honour the victims of the May 9, 2001 stadium tragedy, when 127 lives were lost during a football match in Accra.

The festival transforms tragedy into tribute, using music to inspire healing and hope.

A powerful platform for young voices to lead dialogues on climate change, sustainable development, and African innovation—powered by art, music, and creativity.

The event is expected to attract over 20,000 music fans, and the organisers have called on both local and international artistes to join the fundraising lineup.

The HoodTalk Music Festival Fundraising Drive – the $14 million goal will be used to support the construction and operation of five pediatric clinics in underserved regions of Ghana, ensuring access to critical care for thousands of children.

Volta Regional Minister receives final report on Sokode SHS disturbance

0

By Michael Foli Jackidy

Sokode (V/R), April 16, GNA – The Volta Regional Minister, Mr. James Gunu, has officially received the final report on the recent unrest at Sokode Senior High School (SHS), compiled by a seven-member investigative committee chaired by Mr. Alexander Mawusi Buadi.

The 42-page document, presented during a brief ceremony at the Volta Regional Coordinating Council in Ho, marks the culmination of weeks of detailed inquiry into the incident, which caused significant concern among education stakeholders and the public.

The committee, which was tasked with uncovering the root causes of the unrest and recommending corrective measures, conducted extensive interviews with 43 individuals.

These included students, teachers, administrators, board members, parents, and other key stakeholders.

According to the report, the disturbance stemmed from growing student indiscipline, including worrying revelations of drug use, truancy, and students leaving campus without permission.

It also found that governance and oversight structures within the school—such as the Parent-Teacher Association (PTA), School Board, and Student Representative Council (SRC)—had become weak and ineffective.

The damage caused during the incident was estimated at GH₵175,000, covering broken infrastructure, destroyed equipment, and other forms of property loss.

The report also emphasised the need for enhanced counseling services, stronger collaboration between school authorities and parents, and a restructured disciplinary system that prioritizes prevention and early intervention.

In receiving the report, Mr. James Gunu expressed deep appreciation to Mr. Buadi and his committee for their diligence, professionalism, and commitment to addressing the issue with fairness and clarity.

“I commend the committee for the in-depth work done. The findings and recommendations provide us with a clear path forward to prevent a recurrence of such unfortunate incidents,” the Minister stated.

He assured the public that the Regional Coordinating Council would not take the findings lightly and revealed that the full report had been forwarded to the Attorney-General’s Department for legal advice and further action.

The Minister indicated that based on the legal counsel, decisive actions will be taken to restore discipline, accountability, and leadership in the school.

“Education remains the cornerstone of our region’s development, and we must ensure that our schools are safe, structured, and nurturing environments for learning. This report will help us make bold decisions in that direction,” he added.

The Volta Regional Minister further noted that the incident at Sokode SHS should serve as a wake-up call to other schools in the region, urging heads of institutions to strengthen internal monitoring systems and ensure student welfare remained a top priority.

The committee’s recommendations are expected to inform broader reforms in secondary education management across the Volta Region.
