‘I don’t believe Ama Endorsed was poisoned’ – Afua Asantewaa

Afua Asantewaa and Ama Endorsed Afua Asantewaa and Ama Endorsed

Media personality and former Guinness World Records contender, Afua Asantewaa, has dismissed rumours that social media influencer and skilled carpenter, Ama Endorsed, was poisoned.

The tragic passing of Comfort Esime Adzigbli, popularly known as Ama Endorsed, on April 17, 2025, plunged social media into intense grief.

Ama Endorsed died just days after celebrating her 29th birthday, during which she gifted herself a Range Rover.

Following her death, speculations have started to swirl online, with some netizens alleging that Ama had been poisoned.

Musician Keche Joshua appeared to have supported the claim, stating that she had recently secured a lucrative deal and could have been poisoned out of envy.

However, Afua Asantewaa, a close friend to the deceased, has firmly refuted such claims.

Speaking exclusively to GhanaWeekend, Afua reflected on their friendship and Ama’s legacy.

“We all started as pageantry contestants, and she was there during my first attempt at the Singathon. She would’ve been there for my second attempt if not for her work commitments.

“She was very close to her father and took on his legacy when he passed. It’s one of the reasons why she became known as ‘The Female Carpenter,” she added.

Struggling to hold back her grief, Afua continued: “We were good friends up until her passing, and I still can’t believe she’s gone. Ama was actually supposed to fix our wardrobe in our new apartment before this sudden event occurred. It just doesn’t seem real.”

On the poisoning rumours, Afua was clear in her response: “I don’t believe the slow poison story. She was surrounded by close family and friends, and everything seemed fine. It wasn’t the kind of setting where something like that could have happened.

“Not to say I don’t believe in human fallibility, but this just doesn’t add up for me. I’m not even blood, but if I feel this way, imagine how her sister feels. I believe she’ll continue Ama’s legacy.”

“She was a rare soul, and she’ll be deeply missed,” Afua concluded, paying tribute to her late friend.

The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has refuted media reports claiming that four police officers were detained in connection with the arrest of a Circuit Court judge over a traffic offense.

In a statement dated April 24, 2025, and signed by Superintendent Joseph Benefo Darkwah, Head of the CID Public Affairs Unit, the department clarified that the police officers implicated in the case were never taken into custody.

“We therefore urge the public to disregard the publication and treat it as false and without any basis. The Police Administration will continue with the investigation into the case in line with the laid down procedures,” the statement noted.

The CID further confirmed that it is investigating a petition filed by the judge on April 7, 2025, regarding an alleged harassment incident that occurred on December 13, 2024.

“The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) on April 7, 2025, received a petition from a Circuit Court Judge to the effect that, on December 13, 2024, four officers of the Adenta Divisional Police Command, led by Inspector Godwin Dey, had harassed her, assaulted her court clerk, and wrongfully towed her vehicle from the frontage of the Adenta Court Complex to the Adenta Police Station. She further noted that though a formal complaint was lodged at the Adenta Divisional Command, she had not yet received a response,” it explained.

“The CID subsequently commenced investigation into the complaint and, as part of the investigation, the following officers, Inspector Francis Adjei, No. 53349, G/Sgt. Dasebre Oti Boateng, No. 53852, and G/Cpl. Jonah Ajubulisa, were identified and invited to the CID Headquarters and given the opportunity to tell their side of the story. They left the CID Headquarters immediately after their statements were taken,” it added.

The department reaffirmed its commitment to investigating the judge’s complaint in accordance with established procedures.

Restoration of Damang Mine a model for future mining leases – Dr Kwakye

Senior Economist and Director of Research at the IEA, Dr John Kwakye Senior Economist and Director of Research at the IEA, Dr John Kwakye

The Director of Research at the Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA), Dr John Kwakye, has described the government’s takeover of the Damang Mine as a step in the right direction.

According to him, this action should be replicated for all mining leases that are set to expire soon.

Dr Kwakye’s comments follow the government’s decision not to renew the mining lease, which expired on Friday, April 18, 2025.

In a tweet sighted by GhanaWeb Business, the IEA Director of Research stated, “Restoration of Damang to state ownership is an important, bold step that should be replicated for all expiring mining leases.”

The Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, on Friday, April 17, 2025, announced that the government’s takeover of the Damang Mine, effective Saturday, April 19, 2025, marks a departure from the era of automatic mining lease renewals.

He added that the time when less-developed countries were controlled by developed nations through indirect means has come to an end.

In a press release sighted by GhanaWeb Business, the minister explained that the takeover aligns with Section 23 of the Minerals and Mining Act, 2006 (Act 703).

The Act represents a significant shift in Ghana’s natural resource management strategy, prioritising national interest and transparency over automatic lease renewals.

The minister further noted that the takeover underscores the government’s commitment to ensuring uninterrupted mining operations and safeguarding jobs.

The decision not to renew the mining lease follows the expiration of the initial 30-year lease, originally granted on April 18, 1995, and ending on April 18, 2025.

The government has stated that this move is part of a broader mission to transform the nation’s economic landscape.

Petitions against Chief Justice tarnishing Judiciary’s image – Ansa-Asare

0

Former Director of the Ghana School of Law, Kwaku Ansa-Asare, has expressed serious concern over what he describes as the growing public humiliation of the judiciary.

He cautioned that the ongoing wave of petitions and criticisms directed at Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo risks undermining the integrity of one of Ghana’s most critical democratic institutions.

Speaking on Eyewitness News on Wednesday, April 23, 2025, Ansa-Asare called for national introspection and a more measured approach in addressing matters concerning the judiciary.

“In all these matters, we have singled out one of the institutions of governance for humiliation and mockery. What we are doing now is that we are tarnishing the image of Ghana’s judiciary. We think that it is Justice Torkonoo today, and therefore, an NDC government can do whatever to cause her exit.

But in doing that, the image of the country is sinking low, and we maybe we have to do something about that,” he stated.

Although he acknowledged that President John Dramani Mahama is acting within the confines of the Constitution in addressing petitions regarding the Chief Justice’s conduct, Ansa-Asare stressed the need for caution going forward.

“Though the president is acting in accordance with the constitution, I will suggest that any more petition should be handled with care and circumspection,” he added.

Ansa-Asare’s remarks add to the broader debate about judicial independence and the tone of public discourse surrounding high-profile legal and constitutional matters.

Apple and Meta attack ‘unfair’ €700m EU fines

0

The European Union has ordered Apple and Meta to pay a combined €700m (£599m) in the first fines it has issued under legislation intended to curb the power of big tech.

It has issued a €500m (£428m) fine to Apple over its App Store, while Meta has been fined €200m (£171m) over how much choice users had to consent to data collection.

“We have a duty to protect the rights of citizens and innovative businesses in Europe,” Commissioner Henna Virkkunen said in a statement.

The two tech firms have reacted angrily, with Meta accusing the EU of “attempting to handicap successful American businesses” and Apple saying it was being “unfairly targeted” and forced to “give away our technology for free.”

The fines are lower than some of those issued by the EU in the past but – given the heightened economic tensions with America – still risk angering US President Donald Trump.

The US has levied a 10% tariff on imports from the EU, which Trump has accused of “taking advantage” of America.

EU spokesperson Arianna Podesta insisted the matters were “completely separate”, telling the BBC: “This is about enforcement, it’s not about trade negotiations.”

The White House has been contacted for comment.

Data and apps

The European Commission – the EU’s executive – started both investigations last year under a new law brought in to promote fairness in the tech sector called the Digital Markets Act (DMA).

The case against Apple was over its App Store.

The Commission says it must freely offer alternative app marketplaces to users and app developers – and says Apple was in breach of this.

Meanwhile, Meta’s fine was over the choices it offered on data collection.

Meta introduced a “consent or pay” model, which meant users had to choose between allowing Meta to combine data it had collected on Facebook and Instagram, or paying a monthly subscription.

The Commission says this model did not allow users to freely consent to how their data was used.

In November, Meta introduced another option, which the Commission says “allegedly uses less personal data to display advertisements.”

The Commission is currently assessing the new option.

In both cases, the Commission says the size of the fine takes into account “the gravity and duration of the non-compliance”.

Both companies have 60 days to comply or risk further fines.

“Apple and Meta have fallen short of compliance with the DMA by implementing measures that reinforce the dependence of business users and consumers on their platforms,” said Commissioner Teresa Ribera.

“As a result, we have taken firm but balanced enforcement action against both companies, based on clear and predictable rules.”

Apple said the Commission had made “a series of decisions that are bad for the privacy and security of our users, bad for products, and force us to give away our technology for free.”

It also accused the Commission of “[moving] the goal posts” during their meetings.

Meta said the ruling means Chinese and European companies are allowed to operate to different standards compared to American businesses.

“This isn’t just about a fine; the Commission forcing us to change our business model effectively imposes a multi-billion-dollar tariff on Meta while requiring us to offer an inferior service,” it said in a statement.

Epic dispute

The fines are relatively small given the tech companies’ huge worldwide revenues – and are a fraction of Google’s €2.4bn fine from last September.

But they are significant in the context of the current global economic situation.

In February, Donald Trump’s White House issued a memorandum complaining about EU and UK regulation of American tech firms.

“Today’s decisions are important in that they confirm that the European Commission will not back down,” Anne Witt, professor of law at the EDHEC Business School in France, told the BBC.

Prof Witt said the disagreement was “not so much about substantive antitrust principles,” given the US government is itself taking a number of big tech companies to court over alleged monopoly power.

They are more “about the fact that European institutions are telling US companies how to behave, even if these decisions are limited to have these companies behave on European soil,” she added.

One company pleased with the ruling against Apple is Epic Games, the makers of Fortnite.

They had a long-running dispute over the distribution of their apps on Apple devices.

Epic Games chief executive Tim Sweeney said the ruling was “great news for app developers worldwide” in a thread on X.

He urged the US to pass similar legislation which would allow developers to distribute their apps without using Apple’s App Store, which charges fees for using its platform.

A US-based think tank, which is partly funded by big tech firms including Apple and Meta, came out against the decision.

The Information Technology and Innovation Foundation said the European Commission “has made clear that the DMA will be used to extract revenues from U.S. firms even as they continue striving to comply with its strictures.”

“The Commission’s actions today will not be well received by the Trump administration,” it said.

The UK is also investigating big tech companies over alleged monopoly power, after a digital competition law was brought in last year focusing on companies with large market shares.

“Apple and Google’s mobile ecosystems and Google’s general search and search advertising services are currently being investigated for potentially having this status, and it is likely that other US tech giants and platforms will face similar investigations in the near future,” said Andrew Maxwell, partner at law firm Freeths.

Kotoko Sacks Ogum, Appoints Karim Zito In Interim Role

0

Coach Ogum (left) and Coach Zito

KUMASI ASANTE Kotoko on Monday, April 21, 2025 announced the sacking of Head Coach Prosper Narteh Ogum.

In his place, the club has hired Dreams FC manager Abdul Karim Zito as interim Head Coach and Technical Director, as it navigates the remaining six games of the Ghana Premier League season.

The decision to sack Mr. Ogum followed the Porcupine Warriors’ 2-0 loss to Nations F.C. the previous day.

It was the club’s second consecutive defeat following a 3-0 loss to Accra Lions FC, leaving the club winless in four matches.

The result saw Koto dropping to fourth position on the league table with 47 points, six behind league leaders Bibiani Gold Stars FC.

A statement by the club indicated that the decision was taken after “constructive discussions between both parties, with a shared understanding that it is in the best interest of the club at this time.”

The statement urged supporters to “remain calm and continue to support the club during this transition. Further updates will be communicated in due course.”

Ogum who won the league with Asante Kotoko in 2022 returned to the club in July 2023 for a second stint but guided the Club to a lowly sixth place finish.

The club has now appointed former player and coach Abdul Karim Zito as interim manager until the end of the season.

Coach Zito recently guided Dreams FC to a historic CAF Confederation Cup semi-final and also led Ghana’s U-20 team to the 2021 Africa U-20 Cup of Nations title in Mauritania.

He is expected to guide the club to a strong finish to the season, with the hope of winning the league still on the table.

Joining him in the new role is Prince Yaw Owusu, who was appointed as Assistant Coach.

Owusu previously held roles at Medeama SC, Inter Allies, the Ghana U-20 and U-17 national teams.

CJ suspension: Executive trying to control Judiciary – Haruna Mohammed

0

The Deputy General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Haruna Mohammed, has raised concerns over what he describes as an attempt by the Executive arm of government to exert undue control over the Judiciary.

His comments come after President John Mahama suspended the Chief Justice, Gertrude Torkornoo, following the establishment of a committee to investigate petitions against her.

Read also: Mahama suspends Chief Justice after setting up committee to probe petitions

The move, announced in a statement from the Presidency, is in compliance with constitutional provisions and follows consultations with the Council of State.

Speaking in an interview on Joy FM’s Top Story on Wednesday, Mr Mohammed expressed the party’s unease with recent developments following President John Mahama’s suspension of the Chief Justice.

He noted that the move appears to undermine judicial independence and could set a dangerous precedent.

He further referenced an ongoing Supreme Court case challenging the processes surrounding the Chief Justice’s suspension under Article 146 of the 1992 Constitution. According to him, the President’s decision to proceed with the suspension before the Court has ruled on the matter undermines due process.

“It is basic civic knowledge that we operate with three separate arms of government — the Executive, Legislature, and Judiciary. The Executive is trying as much as possible to control the Judiciary as a result of that, President Mahama has gone ahead to suspend the Chief Justice using the process that has been started, which has been questioned to be decided at the Supreme Court,” he stressed.

He added, “This is something that we all need to examine holistically. The judiciary must remain an independent arm of government, but recent actions suggest otherwise. As a party, we are particularly concerned about the President’s remarks made in Akosombo, where he openly stated that he would facilitate the appointment of lawyers affiliated with the NDC to the bench.”

Mr Mohammed alleged that such comments, made when Mahama was a candidate, were not just political rhetoric but part of a broader agenda now unfolding under his administration.

TTH CEO’s dismissal not linked to hospital altercation

0

Member of Parliament for Tamale North, Alhassan Suhuyini, has clarified that the dismissal of the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Tamale Teaching Hospital (TTH), Dr. Adam Atiku, is unrelated to a widely circulated altercation involving hospital staff and the Health Minister.

His clarification comes amid public speculation linking Dr. Atiku’s dismissal to a viral video showing a tense exchange between a hospital staff and Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh during an unannounced visit to the facility on Tuesday, April 22.

Setting the record straight, Mr. Suhuyini stated on the Citi Eyewitnes News that; “The dismissal of the CEO has nothing to do with the 31-year-old Salman. A three-member committee has been set up to look into that matter. The CEO of the hospital is not the gentleman who was seen in the video having exchanges with the Minister.

“The gentleman seen in the video, we were told, is a dedicated worker in the hospital, but he was simply cautioned by me and the Minister not to suggest the recent death of Salim was being blown out of proportion because we thought that was insensitive,” he said.

Suhuyini emphasised that the government’s decision to remove Dr. Atiku is part of a broader effort to reform and reposition the Tamale Teaching Hospital in response to widespread calls for improved healthcare delivery in the Northern Region.

“The action by the government is just part of the government’s agenda to reset the hospital and to respond to the calls of the people to fix the Tamale Teaching Hospital.”

President John Dramani Mahama’s decision to relieve Dr. Atiku of his duties followed reports of alleged negligence leading to the death of a patient at the hospital’s Accident and Emergency Ward. The case sparked public outcry due to persistent complaints about poor healthcare services and non-functional medical equipment at the facility.

However, the move has drawn criticism from the Minority Caucus in Parliament, which described the dismissal as illegal, emotionally driven, and a violation of administrative protocols.

Speaking during the IMF/World Bank meetings on the theme, “Debt Vulnerabilities in Developing Countries: A Key Challenge for Achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)”, Dr Asiama said, “strengthening the debt sustainability framework to proactively prevent unsustainable debt accumulation without unduly limiting access to much-needed development assistance is essential.”

The BoG Governor continued, “The IMF should ensure that the debt sustainability framework remains fit-for-purpose and effectively captures the unique vulnerabilities of developing countries, including climate-related debt risks and new debt instruments.”

Dr Asiama emphasised the importance of refining the IMF’s debt sustainability toolkit, stating, “We urge the IMF to enhance its risk assessment tools and early warning systems to timely identify potential debt sustainability issues. Fraud cases drop in 2024, but value at risk rises – BoG

0

Latest data from the Bank of Ghana indicates that the number of suspected fraud cases in banks and Specialised Deposit-Taking Institutions (SDIs) sectors fell by 18% in 2024 compared to the previous year.

According to the Bank of Ghana’s 2024 Fraud Report, despite this decline in incidents, the total value at risk increased by 11%, rising from GH¢72 million in 2023 to GH¢80 million in 2024.

The report, which also covers Payment Service Providers (PSPs), revealed that forgery and document manipulation surged dramatically, emerging as the most severe fraud type.

This category accounted for 67% of the total value at risk for banks and SDIs in 2024, with losses rising from GH¢7.47 million in 2023 to GH¢53.5 million—a sevenfold increase. This spike was primarily driven by an isolated case involving GH¢53 million.

Meanwhile, identity theft losses grew nearly tenfold, from GH¢0.6 million to GH¢5.7 million, attributed to weak due diligence during Ghana Card-based financial transactions.

The report also highlighted that recovering losses remains a major challenge for financial institutions due to lengthy legal processes, often discouraging them from pursuing restitution.

In the PSP sector, the total value at risk rose to GH¢19 million in 2024, involving 15,673 reported cases—an increase of 18% in value and 7% in case count compared to 2023.

Across all three sectors—banks, SDIs, and PSPs—the total number of fraud cases increased by 5%, from 15,865 in 2023 to 16,733 in 2024. The total value at risk also rose by 13%, from GH¢88 million to GH¢99 million.

Specifically for banks, the total value at risk reached GH¢75 million in 2024, up from GH¢63 million in 2023, marking a 19% increase.

The 2024 edition of Bank of Ghana’s annual fraud report underscores the need for stronger internal controls, improved identity verification processes, and enhanced legal mechanisms to support fraud recovery.

Policies are being put together to reduce and stabilize inflation — Governor

0

By Morkporkpor Anku

Accra, April 23, GNA – Dr. Johnson Pandit Asiama, Governor, Bank Of Ghana, says steps are being taken to reduce and stabilize inflation, and build reserves amid sound fiscal policy consolidation measures.

He said across the continent, central banks had taken bold steps to strengthen transparency, independence, and credibility.

The Governor was speaking at the African Leaders & Partners Forum in the United States America on the theme: “Africa & The U.S.: Shaping A Trade-Driven Future.”

Total U.S. goods trade with Africa in 2024, reached $71.6 billion, with a $7.4 billion surplus in favor of the continent.

He said stability alone was not a panacea for sustainable partnership but rather it was the starting point.

He said as African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA), pact nears expiration in 2025, in its renewal, “we must reshape AGOA to align with Africa’s industrial goals, ensure rules-based access, and embed incentives for value added exports.”

The Act, enacted in 2000, was a watershed trade moment granting duty free access to the U.S. market for eligible African countries and opening space for deeper trade cooperation.

Yet over the past two decades, this relationship has remained narrowly centered on exports of raw materials, extractives and some activity in the energy sector.

Ghana offers a powerful case study within this broader narrative and under AGOA, Ghana has emerged as a top beneficiary, exporting not only oil but also cocoa, textiles, and handicrafts to the U.S.

Between 2019 and 2024, Ghana–U.S. trade averaged $2.5 billion annually, representing about 15 per cent of Ghana’s total exports. In 2024, bilateral trade reached $2.48 billion, with Ghana exporting $1.60 billion, primarily crude oil, cocoa, and timber, and importing $874 million, resulting in a trade surplus of over $730 million.

He said a sound macro environment needs a resilient financial system beneath it to support growth.

He said Ghana’s Financial Stability Fund, developed with international partners, had supported post-pandemic solvency and governance reform.

Dr Asiama said across Africa, “we need to further embed technology in supervision using Suptech and Regtech, improving accountability, and enabling our financial institutions to support private-sector-led growth.”

He said the task was to build systems that would transform ideas and interest into tangible investment and turn risks into opportunity, while deepening trade integration and addressing the financing constraints that continued to hold back Africa’s export potential.

He said as global supply chains were redefined, Africa must move from being a source of raw materials to a destination for investment across high-impact sectors, adding that in Ghana, that opportunity was real and immediate.

“This report is not just a document; it is a call to action. The recommendations contained in it are timely and necessary for the rejuvenation of our great party,” he stated.

He further emphasised that the findings were the result of wide consultations with party grassroots, executives, and stakeholders.

Group Demands State Of Emergency Now

0

Okatakyie Afrifa-Mensah

Generational Rights Society, a pressure group, has called on the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) to declare a state of emergency on illegal mining given the rise in the illegal activities in recent times.

Speaking at a press conference yesterday in Accra, lead convener of the group, Okatakyie Afrifa-Mensah said though the NDC while in opposition made several promises to deal with illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey, and even indicated the need for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to declare a state of emergency, the situation has rather worsened under the NDC government.

He said “if the Minister of Lands and Natural Resources has realised how important our water bodies and lands are and has cried publicly due to the country’s forest and lands been destroyed through illegal mining, then a state of emergency should be declared by President Mahama immediately.”

According to the group, individuals associated with the ruling government upon assumption of office have also engaged in illegal mining, despite promises made by President Mahama to address the menace.

The group also asked government to repeal LI 2462 as promised, and desist from an attempt to deport foreigners who are engaged in illegal mining in Ghana as announced by the Interior Minister Muntaka Mubarak recently.

He also stated that the prevailing conditions at the various mining areas shows that President Mahama does not have the political will to deal with illegal mining, which is fast destroying water bodies and farmlands.

He further indicated that the group, with the support of Ghanaians from various parts of the country, will embark on a demonstration on Monday, April 28, 2025, starting from the Obra Spot at Circle in Accra.

“Among some of the issues that government will be petitioned on is to find out why the delay in announcing state of emergency as a result of galamsey, why has the government failed to deal decisively with the galamsey menace considering the array of promises the NDC made to Ghanaians while in opposition, and also demand government to provide Ghanaians a cogent plan to deal with the galamsey menace in three days,” he stated.

He further questioned the motive for establishing the Gold Board and commissioning of water guards by the NDC government.

He said all efforts by the government to deal with the galamsey menace are hoaxes because after all, past governments including the NPP used the military without significant dividends.

He said despite initial hiccups to prevent the group from embarking on the planned demonstration by the Ghana Police Service, it has successfully been able to fulfil all the requirements as contained in the Public Order Act for the demonstration on the date announced.

‘Your days are numbered’ – Chief of Army Staff warns armed groups in Bawku

0

Chief of Army Staff, Major General Lawrence Kwaku Gbetanu, has warned individuals behind the ongoing unrest in Bawku.

He has cautioned that any attacks on civilians or military personnel will be treated as acts of extremism and met with the full force of the Ghana Armed Forces.

Speaking at a press briefing after touring the conflict-prone town in the Upper East Region on Wednesday, Maj Gen Gbetanu stressed the military’s readiness to decisively clamp down on violent elements.

“I’ll serve a word of caution to all, especially those fomenting the trouble in Bawku, that their days are getting numbered. Any attack on innocent civilians or any military personnel will be considered as an act of extremism and will be met with the deliberate full strength and resolve of our forces,” he declared.

The Army Chief vowed that there would be “no safe haven” for those choosing violence over peace and unity.

He said the Ghana Armed Forces are committed to tracking and bringing to justice all armed individuals contributing to the violence in the area.

“We will pursue every individual involved. And justice will be served,” he assured.

Maj Gen Gbetanu also appealed directly to the youth, urging them to abandon violence and choose dialogue and development instead.

“Lay down your arms, return to the path of peace. Your future does not lie in bloodshed but in building, learning, and growing your country,” he said.

Earlier in the day, the Chief of Army Staff paid a courtesy call on the Kusaug Traditional Council. During the visit, he called for collaboration between traditional leaders and security forces to restore calm to the area.

He also asked chiefs to help rein in the youth and discourage any confrontational behavior toward military personnel, stressing the need for mutual respect to maintain stability in the area.

The visit marks Maj Gen Gbetanu’s first official tour of Bawku since assuming office.

If we decide to vote, we will win

Former Vice President, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia Former Vice President, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia

Former Vice President and 2024 Flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has issued a rallying call to party members, urging them to recognize that the party’s future electoral success lies in their own hands.

He emphasised that the path to victory in future elections is clear, as the party must increase participation among its own supporters.

Speaking during the NPP’s thank-you tour, in a video shared on X by JoyNews on April 23, 2025, he said, “The fact is, we work very hard. We try to get everybody involved. As you know, the General Secretary was the Director of Operations for the campaign. The Women’s Organiser organised the women. The Youth Organiser organised the youth. The Nasara Coordinator handled the Zongo, and so on.”

He continued, “So, we tried to do as much as we could. Notwithstanding our hard work, however, we still suffered a heavy defeat. And when you look at what happened, you will see that it was internal. So, the key to victory going forward is within the NPP, it is within ourselves, because we decided not to vote. So, if we decide to vote, we will win. The key is ourselves. It is ourselves. That is what we have to understand and take forward.”

According to Dr Bawumia, approximately 2.1 million NPP supporters did not vote, significantly impacting the party’s performance.

In contrast, opposition candidate John Dramani Mahama gained around 115,000 additional votes, which made a considerable difference in the final outcome.

“Many of our supporters did not come out to vote. This is really, fundamentally, why we lost the election. 2.1 million of our supporters didn’t come out, 2.1 million. And if you look at John Mahama’s votes, his votes went up by maybe 115,000. So, he increased by 115,000, and we went down by 2.1 million. That is basically why we did not win, because we decided not to vote,” he stated.

IMF must act now – BoG Governor demands faster debt relief for Africa

0

Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Dr Johnson Asiama Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Dr Johnson Asiama

Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Dr Johnson Asiama, has given a stark warning about Africa’s escalating debt crisis, calling for urgent international action to prevent further setbacks to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Speaking at the African Consultative Group Meeting in Washington, D.C., on April 22, 2025, Dr Asiama revealed that nearly half of Sub-Saharan African countries are now at high risk of, or already in, debt distress, with interest payments surpassing health and education spending in many nations.

“Many developing countries, especially in Africa, face high and rising debt levels, with a shift in creditor composition, high rollover risks, and substantial financing needs, particularly following the recent successive shocks.

“These include the COVID pandemic, geopolitical tensions, financing squeezes, and climate-related disasters. Consequently, many African countries are contending with crippling debt service obligations, with about half of Sub-Saharan African countries at high risk of, or already in, debt distress at the end of 2024,” he said.

According to the Governor, this debt distress severely affects spending for social and development among the affected countries, which is further worsened by reduced international assistance.

“This severely constrains fiscal space for essential social and development spending and hinders progress towards achieving the SDGs. Most concerning is that per capita public expenditure on interest payments in Africa has surpassed spending on health and education, exacerbated by declining overseas development assistance,” he added.

Dr Asiama urged the IMF to bolster concessional financing through tools like the Poverty Reduction and Growth Trust and the Catastrophe Containment and Relief Trust.

“We urge the Fund to engage actively with members to secure the financing assurances needed for the distribution of GRA income

under the multi-year framework, ensuring its timely and effective implementation,” he said.

He also called for a revamped debt sustainability analysis (DSA) to better address climate risks and new debt instruments and demanded streamlined restructuring processes and private creditor participation.

“The IMF should ensure that the debt sustainability framework remains fit for purpose and effectively captures the unique vulnerabilities of developing countries, including climate-related debt risks and new debt instruments,” he said.

Dr Asiama stressed that African nations are committed to fiscal reforms but need coordinated support.

“Given the debt vulnerabilities exacerbated by climate change, we call for enhanced collaborative efforts. This includes proposing ambitious yet achievable and monitorable concessional financing options, establishing joint financing mechanisms, and developing common policy frameworks,” he concluded.

Ghanaian fintech, Kowri, known as the way to pay, has further demonstrated why it is the way to pay. The 2-year-old fintech recently announced the launch of its groundbreaking voice command feature, setting a new standard for digital financial accessibility and convenience in the Ghanaian market.

The new voice-activated technology allows Kowri users to execute financial transactions, check balances, and manage their accounts through voice commands – a first for payment platforms in Ghana and around the Sub-Saharan region.

This innovative feature, which not only works with English but also with other Ghanaian languages, including Twi and Hausa, addresses critical needs for users with limited digital literacy, visual impairments, or those seeking faster, more intuitive banking experiences.

“We’re not just adding a feature; we’re transforming how Ghanaians interact with their financial services. Voice technology breaks down digital barriers, making financial management more inclusive and effortless for everyone,” said Claud Hutchful, CEO and one of the founders of Kowri. ”

The fintech’s mantra is around making life a lot more convenient and accessible for the average African.

“Fintechs are really about using technology to make finance more accessible. So there was no better way to demonstrate our commitment to making life easier for our customers, but also using technology which both reduces accessibility barriers for millions more as well as makes more sense for the ever-evolving digital customer.”

The company recently introduced a Scan to Pay feature that replaces the inconvenience of taking the time to type in phone numbers to send money with a seamless and instant scan action.

“In this era of very quickly changing technology landscape, it’s important to demonstrate how technology can drive the customer experience when it’s at the forefront of product development”, said Claud.

Kowri’s Voice Command Technology opens up a smarter, faster, and more intuitive way to manage your finances. With just your voice, you can now perform essential tasks on the Kowri app, making everyday transactions even more seamless in a secure environment.

With transactions possible in English and local languages, managing your finances is possible, regardless of whether a user is fluent in English or more comfortable in a local dialect, Kowri’s voice technology understands you.
The technology is compatible with most smartphones, and there’s no need for any special devices.

Currently, the voice feature supports a range of high-frequency transactions, including sending money, paying bills and airtime purchases, with a lot more on the way. Available immediately for all Kowri users, the voice command feature represents a significant leap in digital financial innovation for Ghana’s growing fintech ecosystem.

The company will, in the coming weeks, also extend this feature to merchants, enabling their customers to pay them directly with voice. Users can access this technology immediately by downloading Kowri or updating their existing app.

The Summit under the theme “Leading Ghana’s Economic Reset: Transforming Business and Governance for a Sustainable Futuristic Economy- A Private-Public Sector CEO Dialogue & High-Impact Learning,” will, as usual, celebrate outstanding leadership in corporate Ghana.

It will take place on Monday, May 26, 2025, at the Kempinski Gold Coast Hotel in Accra.

Speaking at the launch, Mr Ernest Egyir, founder of the CEO Summit, emphasised the pivotal role the summit plays in shaping Ghana’s economic future.

“As our country navigates through global uncertainties and local challenges, the call for courageous, innovative, and forward-thinking leadership has never been more pressing,” he stated.

He revealed that this year’s summit will be graced by a high-profile guest, emphasising the event’s national importance.

“I’m honoured to announce that the special guest of honour for this year’s summit will be none other than the President of the Republic of Ghana, President John Mahama. His presence underlines the summit’s significance as a national platform for dialogue between the public and private sectors,” Mr Egyir said.

The Ghana CEO Summit, an annual forum that convenes chief executives, heads of state, policymakers, and investors from across Ghana and the West African sub-region, has established itself as a cornerstone for promoting strategic dialogue and driving economic transformation.

“It is where leadership meets action, where strategy meets policy, and where ideas are turned into transformation,” Mr Egyir added.

He revealed that key highlights of the 2025 summit will include major panel discussions covering critical themes such as “Resetting Ghana’s Economic Narrative,” the exclusive “Presidential Business Dialogue with CEOs” – where the President will set the tone for the summit – and the “CEO Business Keyspan,” which will showcase insights from local giants and African multinationals.

According to him, the “Digital Economy Panel” will delve into how Ghana can leverage technology to drive its next leap forward, while the “Ghana Economic Outlook Panel” will explore strategic pathways for navigating the future.

The summit aims to bring together Ghana’s top business minds and leadership figures to define strategies that will reset, renew, and reposition the country’s economy for the years ahead.

Some of these top figures include the Country Managing Partner of Deloitte Ghana, Daniel Kwadwo Owusu, the Chief Executive Officer of Petrosol Ghana Ltd, Michael Bozumbil, the Executive Chairman of the KGL Group, Alex Apau Dadey.

The Dean of the Law School, University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA), Prof Kofi Abotsi, hinted at a wave of innovative programmes and initiatives to be unveiled in the coming year.

Prof Abotsi highlighted the need to sustain the relevance of platforms like the CEO Network, especially in leading national conversations on business and economic development.

“As we approach our 10th anniversary, I can assure you that there are creative and innovative programmes and products that are likely to be unveiled next year, all aimed at continuing to position the CEO Network as a central voice in business and economic discourse in Ghana,” he said.

Professor Abotsi offered a strong call to action, encouraging widespread participation in this year’s summit.

“I urge everyone to register and attend this year’s gathering as it promises to deliver unique insights into the theme of re-energising the economy,” he stated.

Touching on broader global and national issues, Professor Abotsi warned of the urgent challenges confronting the world and Ghana, including economic instability, the effects of climate change, and the impact of artificial intelligence on the future of work.

“Globally, we’re navigating economic turbulence, climate change is confronting us head-on, and AI is reshaping the workplace. More critically, we are facing a growing mass of unemployed youth, who risk becoming not our democratic dividend, but our democratic danger,” he cautioned.

He stressed that the employment crisis should be of concern to every corporate entity in Ghana and called for a unified response.

“I believe it is vital that all companies be deeply concerned about the employment challenge. I urge all of us to be present at the CEO Summit on 26th May, to participate and ensure that we contribute meaningfully to the development of our country,” Prof Abotsi concluded.

The 9th Ghana CEO Summit was officially launched by Moses Kwasi Baiden Jnr, Chief Executive Officer and Founder of Margins ID Group.

The World Bank has pledged to assist Ghana in addressing its youth unemployment crisis by supporting a new growth and jobs strategy designed to generate employment opportunities for more than 500,000 young people entering the job market each year.

The commitment was made during a high-level meeting between the World Bank’s Managing Director of Operations, Anna Bjerde, and Ghana’s Finance Minister, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, at the Bank’s headquarters in Washington, DC today.

The discussions centred on collaborative efforts to design and implement the strategy, which prioritises job creation, skills development, and inclusive economic growth to absorb the increasing number of job seekers.

Ms. Bjerde stated, “This initiative reflects our shared priority of unlocking opportunities for young people. We are proud to work with Ghana on a strategy that will create jobs and build a stronger, more resilient economy.”

Dr. Forson expressed gratitude for the support, stressing the need for bold and targeted measures to tackle unemployment. “This partnership is a major step forward in our efforts to provide decent and sustainable jobs for our youth,” he said.

The initiative comes at a critical time as Ghana seeks to harness its youthful population for economic transformation. The World Bank’s backing is expected to bolster government efforts in fostering entrepreneurship, enhancing vocational training, and stimulating private sector growth to meet the demands of the expanding labour force.

President Mahama appoints Ebi Bright as Tema Mayor

Ebi Bright has been appointed as the Tema Mayor Ebi Bright has been appointed as the Tema Mayor

President John Dramani Mahama has appointed Ebi Bright as the Mayor of the Tema Metropolitan Assembly.

She was the parliamentary candidate for Tema Central in the just-ended 2024 general elections.

Before her appointment, some youth from Tema stormed the premises of the Tema Metropolitan Assembly, demanding that an indigene be appointed as mayor instead of Ebi Bright.

The protest was marked by the burning of car tyres and the rhythmic beating of drums, aimed at sending a strong message to the authorities.

“We are here with heavy hearts to register our displeasure,” the group said.

“We are hearing that Ebi Bright is to be made the Mayor of Tema, but that is not going to happen. She wasn’t even part of the whole process, so why are they bringing her in as mayor? This is something we do not understand,” they said.

However, Ebi Bright’s team responded, stating that she is a true member of the Tema community.

She lost the parliamentary election to the NPP’s Charles Forson after initially being declared the winner in the first round of counting.

Police in northern Uganda have detained a 24-year-old teacher over aggravated homosexuality Police in northern Uganda have detained a 24-year-old teacher over aggravated homosexuality

Police in northern Uganda have detained a 24-year-old teacher over aggravated homosexuality after he allegedly abused a 10-year-old boy, a police spokesperson said on Wednesday.

The boy, a Primary Three pupil at Ayago Primary School in Lira City, reported the alleged incident after visiting the teacher, who works at Answar Mosque, on Monday, according to North Kyoga regional police spokesperson Patrick Jimmy Okema.

Okema said the boy was with three friends when the teacher took them to his bedroom, ostensibly to watch cartoons on his mobile phone. The teacher then allegedly used Movit Jelly to sodomise the child. Afterward, he reportedly gave the boy Shs1,000 to share with his friends.

Upon returning home, the boy experienced severe pain and informed his mother, who then reported the matter to the local council chairperson. The father was contacted and subsequently filed a formal complaint at Lira Central Police Station on Tuesday.

“The suspect was arrested and detained in a police cell. Statements were recorded from the complainant, victim and witnesses,” Okema stated. He added that both the victim and the suspect have been issued police forms for medical examination.

The scene of the alleged crime was visited by police investigators.

“It’s not the first time we are registering such a case, and indeed very unfortunate,” Okema said. “As police, we pledge our commitment to seeing that the case is handled and concluded well before a court of law,” he added.

Anti-gay law

Under Uganda’s stricter anti-homosexuality laws, “aggravated homosexuality,” which includes sexual acts with a minor, carries the maximum penalty of death.

The legislation also defines aggravated homosexuality to include cases involving the transmission of life-threatening illnesses like HIV, non-consensual acts, and repeat offenders.

President Mahama appoints Dr Bawah Abdulai as new CEO of Tamale Teaching Hospital

Dr. Abubakar Bawah Abdulai has been appointed as new CEO of Tamale Teaching Hospital Dr. Abubakar Bawah Abdulai has been appointed as new CEO of Tamale Teaching Hospital

President John Dramani Mahama has appointed Dr Abubakar Bawah Abdulai as the new Chief Executive Officer of the Tamale Teaching Hospital (TTH).

Dr Abdulai is a senior official at the University for Development Studies (UDS).

His appointment follows the dismissal of the former CEO of the Tamale Teaching Hospital, Dr Adam Atiku, after allegations of negligence that reportedly led to the recent death of a patient at the hospital’s Accident and Emergency Ward.

Dr Atiku’s the dismissal was carried out by the Minister of Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, following a visit to the hospital on Tuesday, April 22, 2025, to assess the situation firsthand.

“I have formally sacked the CEO of the Tamale Teaching Hospital with immediate effect,” Joy News quoted Kwabena Mintah Akandoh as saying.

The Ghana Medical Association (GMA) has criticised the Minister of Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, for his dismissal of the CEO, which followed a heated confrontation.

In response to the incident, which has attracted widespread public attention, the GMA, the umbrella body representing medical professionals, described the minister’s actions as an “abuse of power.”

The GMA stated that the manner in which the dismissal was executed was inappropriate and failed to comply with legally required procedures.

“The GMA strongly condemns the unfortunate treatment of the doctors at the Emergency Unit of the Hospital during the visit by the Minister of Health and the Member of Parliament (MP) for Tamale North and subsequent dismissal of the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Hospital.

“The manner in which the dismissal was carried out is an affront to due process and abuse of power by the Hon. Minister of Health. The GMA stands in solidarity with our colleagues in the wake of these injustices being perpetuated,” the association said in a statement dated Wednesday, April 23, 2025.

Signed by the President of the GMA, Dr. Frank Serebour, and the General Secretary, Dr. Richard Selormey, the statement further condemned the public interrogation of a patient’s death by the minister.

I delayed the ‘Thank You Tour’ to allow the Mike Oquaye report to be concluded

2024 Presidential Candidate of the NPP, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia 2024 Presidential Candidate of the NPP, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia

The 2024 flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has expressed optimism that the recommendations outlined in the Mike Oquaye report will usher in much-needed reforms within the party.

Speaking at the NPP headquarters in Accra on Wednesday, April 23, 2025, ahead of the party’s “Thank You Tour”, Dr Bawumia described the report as a blueprint for strengthening the party’s internal democracy and positioning it for future electoral victories.

Dr Bawumia praised the committee, chaired by former Speaker of Parliament, Prof Aaron Mike Ocquaye, for what he called “a comprehensive and honest assessment” of the party’s strengths and shortcomings.

“This report is not just a document; it is a call to action. The recommendations contained in it are timely and necessary for the rejuvenation of our great party,” he stated.

He further emphasised that the findings were the result of wide consultations with party grassroots, executives and stakeholders.

Highlighting some of the key reform areas, the 2024 NPP flagbearer noted that the report proposes enhanced transparency in internal elections, improved communication structures, and stronger youth engagement.

“If we are to retain the confidence of Ghanaians and inspire a new generation of patriots, then we must be bold in implementing these reforms,” Dr Bawumia added.

He also assured the party faithful that the leadership would prioritise accountability and inclusiveness in the next phase of the NPP’s growth.

The “Thank You Tour”, according to Dr Bawumia, will offer an opportunity to connect with supporters and communicate the party’s renewed vision.

He concluded with a rallying call: “Let us embrace the spirit of renewal. Let us stand together, united by our values, and move forward as one NPP – stronger and more determined than ever before.”

The event was attended by several top party executives, regional chairpersons and youth leaders.

Ghana’s economy can be transformed through agriculture – Professor Bokpin

0

Professor Godfred Bokpin, Economist Professor Godfred Bokpin, Economist

An economist, Professor Godfred Bokpin, has emphasised the urgent need for Ghana to scale up its agricultural productivity in the face of escalating global trade wars.

According to him, Ghana does not produce enough to meet its domestic needs, a challenge that threatens the country’s long-term sustenance.

He noted that current developments on the global stage should serve as a wake-up call for Ghana to make significant investments in agricultural production.

“If you look at Ghana, we’re not even producing enough to feed ourselves, let alone think about exporting. We rely heavily on imports from countries like Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger, so there’s definitely room to grow,” Professor Bokpin said.

He added, “We have the potential to transform our economy through agriculture, agribusiness, and agro-processing. Once we achieve self-sufficiency, we can then focus on exporting to neighboring countries. Africa’s food deficit runs into billions of dollars, there’s a huge market waiting.”

Meanwhile, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) has revised its global economic growth forecast for 2025 down to 2.8%, a decrease from the 3.3% projection made in January.

This revision is largely attributed to intensifying trade disputes, particularly between the United States and its key trading partners, most notably China.
