President John Dramani Mahama has appointed Dr Abubakar Bawah Abdulai as the new Chief Executive Officer of the Tamale Teaching Hospital (TTH).

Dr Abdulai is a senior official at the University for Development Studies (UDS).

His appointment follows the dismissal of the former CEO of the Tamale Teaching Hospital, Dr Adam Atiku, after allegations of negligence that reportedly led to the recent death of a patient at the hospital’s Accident and Emergency Ward.

Dr Atiku’s the dismissal was carried out by the Minister of Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, following a visit to the hospital on Tuesday, April 22, 2025, to assess the situation firsthand.

“I have formally sacked the CEO of the Tamale Teaching Hospital with immediate effect,” Joy News quoted Kwabena Mintah Akandoh as saying.

The Ghana Medical Association (GMA) has criticised the Minister of Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, for his dismissal of the CEO, which followed a heated confrontation.

In response to the incident, which has attracted widespread public attention, the GMA, the umbrella body representing medical professionals, described the minister’s actions as an “abuse of power.”

The GMA stated that the manner in which the dismissal was executed was inappropriate and failed to comply with legally required procedures.

“The GMA strongly condemns the unfortunate treatment of the doctors at the Emergency Unit of the Hospital during the visit by the Minister of Health and the Member of Parliament (MP) for Tamale North and subsequent dismissal of the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Hospital.

“The manner in which the dismissal was carried out is an affront to due process and abuse of power by the Hon. Minister of Health. The GMA stands in solidarity with our colleagues in the wake of these injustices being perpetuated,” the association said in a statement dated Wednesday, April 23, 2025.

Signed by the President of the GMA, Dr. Frank Serebour, and the General Secretary, Dr. Richard Selormey, the statement further condemned the public interrogation of a patient’s death by the minister.
