Scores arrested over Pakistan KFC attacks, sparked by Gaza war protests

0

Police have arrested scores of people in Pakistan in recent weeks after more than 10 mob attacks on outlets of the US fast-food chain KFC, sparked by anti-United States sentiment and opposition to its ally Israel’s war in Gaza, officials said.

Police in major cities in the Islamic nation, including the southern port city of Karachi, the eastern city of Lahore and the capital Islamabad, confirmed at least 11 incidents in which KFC outlets were attacked by protesters armed with sticks and vandalised. At least 178 people were arrested, the officials said this week.

KFC and its parent, Yum Brands, both US-based, did not respond to requests for comment.

A police official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said one KFC employee was shot and killed this week in a store on the outskirts of Lahore by unknown gunmen. The official added there was no protest at the time, and they were investigating whether the killing was motivated by political sentiment or some other reason.

In Lahore, police said they were ramping up security at 27 KFC outlets around the city after two attacks took place and five others were prevented.

“We are investigating the role of different individuals and groups in these attacks,” said Faisal Kamran, a senior Lahore police officer, adding that 11 people, including a member of the Islamist religious party Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP), were arrested in the city. He added that the protests were not officially organised by TLP.

TLP spokesman Rehan Mohsin Khan said the group “has urged Muslims to boycott Israeli products, but it has not given any call for protest outside KFC.”

“If any other person claiming to be a TLP leader or activist has indulged in such activity, it should be taken as his personal act which has nothing to do with the party’s policy,” said Khan.

KFC has long been viewed as a symbol of the United States in Pakistan and has borne the brunt of anti-American sentiment in recent decades with protests and attacks.

Western brands have been hit by boycotts and other forms of protests in Pakistan and other Muslim-majority countries in recent months over Israel’s military offensive in the Gaza Strip.

The war was triggered by the Palestinian militant group Hamas’ October 7, 2023, attack on southern Israel, in which 1,200 people were killed and 251 taken hostage to Gaza, according to Israeli tallies.

Since then, more than 51,000 Palestinians have been killed in the Israeli offensive, according to local health authorities.

Yum Brands has said one of its other brands, Pizza Hut, has faced a protracted impact from boycotts related to Israel’s war in Gaza.

In Pakistan, local brands have made inroads into its fast-growing cola market as some consumers avoid US brands. In 2023, Coca-Cola’s market share in the consumer sector in Pakistan fell to 5.7% from 6.3% in 2022, according to GlobalData, while PepsiCo’s fell to 10.4% from 10.8%.

Earlier this month, religious clerics in Pakistan called for a boycott of any products or brands that they say support Israel or the American economy, but asked people to stay peaceful and not destroy property.

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has denounced the actions of Hopeson Adorye, a former party member and current ally of the Movement for Change, following his alleged threats of physical assault against one of their executives as reported by Ghana Web.

The incident occurred during a live panel discussion on UTV’s Morning Show on April 17, 2025.

In a statement released by Richard Ahiagbah, the NPP’s Director of Communications, the party expressed its disapproval of Adorye’s behaviour, which it deemed “unprogressive, undemocratic, and primitive.”

The NPP stressed that such conduct undermines Ghana’s democratic values, particularly in relation to women’s participation in politics.

“We condemn Mr. Adorye’s actions in no uncertain terms. Threats of assault, or actual assault, on women for expressing their political views must not be tolerated,” the statement read, emphasizing that Ghana has made significant strides in empowering women in political discourse.

The confrontation between Adorye and Jennifer Queen, a Deputy Communications Director for the NPP, escalated when Adorye interrupted Queen repeatedly during the show.

Queen, who had expressed frustration over the interruptions, confronted Adorye with strong words.

She responded to his claim of having trained her in communication, saying, “You’ve told all your people that you trained me, and they are mocking me… If God repaid evil, you wouldn’t be alive by now.”

The NPP called on media outlets, including UTV, to prevent any future attempts to suppress free speech, stressing that all citizens should be allowed to express their views without fear of intimidation or violence.

NPP electoral loss report under heavy protection

The Director of Communications of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Richard Ahiagbah, has disclosed that the report compiled by the committee chaired by Professor Aaron Mike Oquaye is currently under strict security and is being heavily safeguarded.

According to him, the heightened security measures are intended to prevent any potential leaks to the mainstream media, which could lead to complications and internal challenges for the NPP.

Speaking to Channel One on April 18, 2025, Ahiagbah emphasised that the report is strictly for internal party use.

He noted that the document serves as a strategic guide to help the NPP rebuild, address key issues, and strengthen its appeal to supporters ahead of the next general elections.

“Our report, the actual report delivered to the party by the committee, is heavily protected. It will not be leaked or made available for anyone to obtain a copy,” he stated.

Ahiagbah’s remarks align with earlier statements by the National Organiser of the NPP, Henry Nana Boakye, who dismissed reports circulating from certain individuals as false, describing them as fabricated excerpts from the Oquaye report.

Nana B, as he is popularly known, alleged that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) had made attempts to access the contents of the electoral review committee’s report, but those efforts proved unsuccessful.

According to him, the NDC’s failure to obtain the document prompted them to circulate false materials, which they falsely claimed were excerpts from the official report.

“The NDC has resorted to this old propaganda strategy after their strenuous attempts to obtain the contents of the report proved futile,” he said on April 17, 2025.

Popular Nigerian comedian Ali Baba Popular Nigerian comedian Ali Baba

Popular Nigerian comedian Ali Baba has revealed how he once caught a friend of an associate involved in an extramarital affair with a state governor.

He shared the revelation during an interview on the ‘Outside the Box’ podcast.

Ali Baba took the opportunity to shed light on the recurring involvement of the wives of some friends and associates in questionable relationships with governors and affluent politicians.

He said: “I have been in the houses of a lot of big men, like governors and the rest, and I see wives of a lot of people that I know doing things, and I greet, ‘How are you? How is everything?’

“And then those guys would do their philandering, tap her bum and say, ‘Go back inside, I’m not finished with you,’ and she went back inside. Then I ran into her at an event, and her husband said, ‘Oh, how are you? Meet my wife.’ I responded, ‘Oh, madam, it’s a pleasure. I haven’t seen you in five years. Where have you been?’ And she’s like, ‘I’ve been around, good to see you.”

He added, “When she sees me somewhere after, she calls me and says, ‘Ali, thanks. I say, It’s okay.”

Ali Baba’s recent disclosure casts a sharp light on the often-unspoken indiscretions that occur behind the limelight.

Asamoah Gyan admits he will choose Uruguay for one last game following 2010 heartbreak

0

Asamoah Gyan (M) after his penalty miss against Uruguay in 2010 Asamoah Gyan (M) after his penalty miss against Uruguay in 2010

Former Black Stars striker Asamoah Gyan has revealed that if he could play one more match in his career, it would be against Uruguay, the team at the center of one of the most heartbreaking moments of his career.

Gyan played a pivotal role in Ghana’s historic run to the 2010 World Cup quarter-finals in South Africa, scoring three goals, including two penalties, to lead the Black Stars’ charge.

He had another opportunity to make history by sending Ghana to the semi-finals, potentially becoming the first African country to achieve this feat, when Ghana was awarded a penalty in the final minutes of extra time against Uruguay.

However, Gyan missed the chance, with his penalty crashing against the crossbar.

In an interview with TV3, Gyan reflected on that moment and expressed a longing for redemption.

“If I could play one more game, it would be against Uruguay. My most emotional moment on the pitch was when the final whistle blew against Uruguay, not when I missed the penalty, but after the penalty shootout,” he said.

The Black Stars were ultimately knocked out of the tournament, losing in the penalty shootout that night.

Ghana’s all-time leading scorer, Asamoah Gyan, concluded his international career in 2019, finishing with an impressive 51 goals for the national team.

Ignore the Mischief Makers Quoting Mike Ocquaye’s Report

0

Former Mayor of Kumasi, Sam Pyne, has urged the public to disregard alleged excerpts circulating from the Mike Ocquaye Committee report, which was established to examine the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) performance in the 2024 general elections as per reports from Ghana Web.

Speaking on Asempa FM, Pyne strongly refuted claims that any part of the committee’s findings had been released.

He insisted that the report remains confidential and has not been shared publicly, apart from being submitted to the party’s General Secretary.

He criticized those promoting the supposed excerpts, suggesting they are not credible.

According to Pyne, such individuals are spreading misinformation with ulterior motives. “We associate with some of these people, and we know that after they go and smoke marijuana, they come and sit on social media and engage in all kinds of things,” he said.

Describing the situation as a deliberate attempt to mislead the public and sow division within the party, Pyne called on Ghanaians and party supporters to exercise discretion and await official communication.

He stressed the importance of focusing on rebuilding the party rather than indulging in baseless rumors. “It is mischievous for anyone to claim knowledge of the report or quote supposed excerpts from it,” Pyne added.

The Mike Ocquaye Committee was tasked with analyzing the causes behind the NPP’s loss in the 2024 elections and offering strategic recommendations for the party’s future.

However, the findings are yet to be disclosed, making any leaked information highly questionable, according to party insiders.

Pyne’s comments are part of growing calls from party leaders urging unity and a focus on internal reforms rather than public speculation.

Google found to hold illegal monopoly in online advertising, US Judge rules

0

The United States a federal judge has ruled that Google maintains an illegal monopoly in the online advertising market, marking the second such legal blow to the tech giant in less than a year.

The ruling came on Thursday, April 17,  from Judge Leonie Brinkema in Virginia, who determined that Google had secured and maintained dominance in the online advertising space on certain platforms through unfair competition. The court’s decision centered on tools used for placing digital ads.

According to the ruling, the consequences of Google’s conduct will be determined in a subsequent legal proceeding.

This decision follows a separate antitrust ruling last August, when a judge in Washington concluded that Google held a monopoly in internet search and had protected it through anti-competitive practices. That case represented a significant win for U.S. competition regulators and added to growing scrutiny of Google’s business operations.

The latest case, filed by the U.S. government in 2023, accused Google of violating competition laws in two out of three advertising markets. The Justice Department is now seeking remedies that could include forcing Google to divest major business segments such as its Chrome web browser and Android mobile operating system.

Reacting to the ruling, Google said it plans to appeal. “We disagree with the Court’s decision regarding our publisher tools. Publishers have many options, and they choose Google because our ad tech tools are simple, affordable and effective,” Lee-Anne Mulholland, Google’s vice president for regulatory affairs, stated in a post on X.

A trial to determine the appropriate consequences of the court’s ruling is scheduled to begin next week, as regulators continue to push for structural changes to Google’s dominance in the digital economy.

Community development is my goal, not to become MP in Keta – Afenyo-Markin

0

Minority Leader and Member of Parliament for Effutu, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has emphasized that his primary focus is on community development, particularly in rural areas, and not on using his contributions for political ambitions.

Afenyo-Markin, who was warmly welcomed by the chiefs and people of Tsiame in the Volta Region, made the statement during a visit to support the community as part of his empowerment initiative for young women.

The legislator donated sewing machines and hair dryers to the residents of Tsiame, clarifying that his mission was purely developmental and not politically motivated.

He dismissed rumours suggesting he intends to contest as an independent candidate or as MP for Keta in the Volta Region.

“My interest is to empower people and support development, not to pursue political positions in this area. Community growth must go beyond political partisanship,” Afenyo-Markin stressed.

Togbui Shikabli, Chief of Tsiame, and Mamaga Mashagadi, Queen Mother of Tsiame, expressed gratitude for his gesture and praised him for remembering his roots.

Also present at the event was the Member of Parliament for Keta, Kwame Gakpey, alongside other key members of the community.

‘Settle the debate about Ghana’s founding fathers’ – Haruna Iddrisu to curriculum review committee

0

Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu

The Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has called on the newly established 13-member curriculum review committee to address the longstanding confusion over who truly founded Ghana.

Speaking at the committee’s recent inauguration, he expressed concern that, 68 years after independence, the country still lacks consensus on its founding history.

“Anyone who abandons their past and history loses their way to the future. I’m told this is why we must be intentional about how we teach our children about Ghana’s rich and complex history. So, I’m at a loss that at 68 years, we are still grappling with who the founders of Ghana are, who the founding leader is, or who the founding father was,” he said.

He continued, “This must be a settled matter. In every country, there are founding fathers. It is reasonable to conclude that Dr. Kwame Nkrumah is a founding leader of Ghana. But if, at this age, we still have children asking their parents, ‘Who is the founder of Ghana?’ or ‘Who are the founders of Ghana?’ then there’s a problem.”

Iddrisu stressed the importance of giving children a clear understanding of the nation’s origins.

“At six to eight years old, you shouldn’t be asking who birthed you as a country. I’m sure many of those currently instigating this debate were themselves students of history. Your review of the curriculum must put an end to this issue.”

“I don’t want Ghanaian children to grow up not knowing who their founding fathers were or who their foundational leader was. I expect your review to settle this debate once and for all,” he added.

The controversy resurfaced following an address by former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo on Founder’s Day, during which he dismissed the idea that Dr. Kwame Nkrumah was solely responsible for Ghana’s independence.

“I speak to you this evening rejecting completely the notion that Ghana was founded by one man. While Kwame Nkrumah’s contributions to our independence are undeniable, it is important to acknowledge that the struggle for our nation’s freedom was a collective effort spanning several generations,” Akufo-Addo stated.

His remarks reignited debate, with many questioning the extent of Nkrumah’s role in Ghana’s independence and whether other key figures deserve greater recognition.

Edward Bawa attributes Ghana’s oil production decline to structural failures

Edward Bawa is the Group CEO of GOIL PLC play videoEdward Bawa is the Group CEO of GOIL PLC

Group CEO of GOIL PLC, Edward Bawa has raised concerns over Ghana’s declining oil production, attributing the issue to deep-rooted structural challenges within the sector.

Speaking at an oil and gas forum in Accra on Wednesday, April 16, 2025, Bawa revealed that Ghana’s oil production has dropped by more than 25 percent in recent years.

“Let’s not deny or pretend that the situation in Ghana today is not good. It’s not good because if we look at the data from 2019 to now, production has declined by about 25%,” he said.

Bawa’s remarks underscore the urgent need for reforms and investment to address the obstacles hampering the country’s oil output and to ensure long-term sustainability.

He further explained that the decline in production is primarily due to underinvestment and inefficiencies, noting that some license holders have failed to effectively develop or utilise their allocated resources.

“This has been caused by various factors, underinvestment and cases where even those holding licenses are not actively developing resources,” he added.

Bawa was first appointed Acting CEO of the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC) in January 2025 by President John Mahama, before he was later reassigned as GOIL Group as CEO in February 2025.

First-year tertiary students will no longer receive direct refunds

0

Deputy Education Minister Dr Clement Apaak has disclosed that first-year university students will not receive direct refunds under the government’s no-fee stress policy.

Instead, funds will be credited toward their second-year tuition fees.

Speaking on Joy News Dr Apaak explained that this approach ensures accountability and avoids logistical challenges.

He stated, “Rather than the physical reimbursement, going forward, as they go into their second year, what should have come to them to defer their academic fee for the first year will become a credit, which will then mean that as they go to second year, they wouldn’t have to pay because they have already paid for their first year.”

Adding “This approach helps us avoid logistical challenges and any potential impropriety.”

The policy, initially promised by President John Mahama during the election campaign, aimed to absorb fees for all Level 100 students within the first 120 days of his administration.

Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu had reaffirmed this commitment, assuring refunds for students who had already paid for the 2025 academic year.

Despite allocating GHS499.8 million for implementation, the government has ruled out direct reimbursements for this academic year. Instead, funds will be disbursed directly to universities to streamline the process and prevent impropriety.

‘Blatant Lie’ – Chairman Wontumi Denies Illegal Mining Allegations Involving Chinese Nationals

0

Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, has strongly denied allegations linking him to illegal mining activities involving foreign nationals on a site operated by Akonta Mining Limited as reported by Ghana Web.

The accusations were made by Elikem Kotoko, Deputy Chief Executive Officer of the Forestry Commission, who claimed in a Facebook post that an intelligence-led raid in the Western North Region uncovered illegal operations allegedly connected to Akonta Mining.

According to Kotoko, six Chinese, two Koreans, and 18 Ghanaians were arrested, with several excavators seized.

Reacting swiftly, Chairman Wontumi dismissed the allegations as entirely baseless.

He admitted ownership of Akonta Mining but emphasized that the company is currently not operational and has not engaged in any illegal activities.

“I have a legitimate license to mine on my site, but I have stopped mining in the area long ago due to what illegal miners did on my land,” he said in an interview on Wontumi FM

Wontumi further revealed that rather than engage in illegal mining, he has taken steps to rehabilitate the land, funding a contractor to reclaim the degraded area and plant 15,000 coconut trees.

He maintained that he has no connection with any of the individuals arrested during the raid and insisted that his company has not housed any illegal miners.

“I have no idea who the illegal miners arrested by the police are,” he stated, reaffirming his commitment to legal and environmentally responsible mining practices.

NDC attempted to access Mike Oquaye committee report – Nana B alleges

Henry Nana Boakye is the NPP National Organiser Henry Nana Boakye is the NPP National Organiser

The National Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Henry Nana Boakye, has alleged that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) made attempts to access the contents of the electoral review committee report led by Professor Aaron Mike Oquaye.

According to him, the NDC’s efforts to obtain the report were unsuccessful, prompting them to circulate fabricated documents falsely claimed to be excerpts from the official report.

“The NDC has resorted to this old propaganda strategy after their strenuous attempts to obtain the contents of the report proved futile,” he said on April 17, 2025.

Nana Boakye categorically dismissed the circulating reports, allegedly excerpts from the committee’s findings, as false.

He emphasised that the documents being promoted by the NDC are fabricated and do not appear anywhere in the official report.

“The fake portions of Professor Mike Oquaye’s committee report being circulated by elements in the NDC are complete fabrications not contained in the report,” he asserted.

He assured the public that the official report, which was submitted to the NPP’s national executives following the committee’s investigation into the party’s 2024 electoral loss, remains securely safeguarded.

Boakye added that the party’s opponents would not be given access to the report under any circumstances.

“Expect more of such conjectures in the coming days. The report is in safe custody, and the NDC will not get it,” he declared.

His comments come in response to widely circulated excerpts purportedly from the committee’s report, which appear to assign blame to certain individuals for the NPP’s loss in the 2024 general elections.

“Embarrassed if CJ Is Removed Based on These Petitions’ – Osei-Owusu Questions Grounds for Removal

News Hub Creator39min

Joseph Osei-Owusu, former First Deputy Speaker of Parliament, has stated that the process for removing Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo cannot be swayed by the President as reported by Citinewsroom.

His comments come in response to three petitions circulating on social media calling for her removal.

Osei-Owusu expressed surprise at the content of the petitions, questioning their credibility.

“My position is that the process cannot be influenced by the president,” he said, adding that he would be “very much surprised and disappointed” if the grounds listed in the petitions were valid.

While acknowledging that social media can spread misinformation, Osei-Owusu raised concerns about the validity of the petitions.

“If that is truly the content, the basis for which the petitioners are asking that the CJ be removed, I will be very surprised, disappointed and truly embarrassed if any committee will come to a conclusion that based on such petition, the CJ of Ghana will be removed,” he said.

The former deputy speaker stressed the importance of judicial independence and warned that any move to remove the Chief Justice should be grounded in substantial and credible evidence.

“We need to protect judicial independence,” he emphasized, revealing that the integrity of the judiciary must remain intact.

I don’t do galamsey and no Chinese illegal miners are on Akonta Mining site

Bernard Antwi-Boasiako alias Chairman Wontumi, NPP Ashanti Regional Chairman Bernard Antwi-Boasiako alias Chairman Wontumi, NPP Ashanti Regional Chairman

The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party, Bernard Antwi-Boasiako has refuted claims by the Deputy Chief Executive Officer of Forestry Commission, Elikem Kotoko, that link him to illegal mining activities involving some Chinese nationals.

Elikem Kotoko, in a Facebook post, alleged that some Chinese illegal miners working on a site belonging to Akonta Mining owned by Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, widely called Chairman Wontumi, had been arrested by the Ghana Police Service.

“On the eve of Good Friday, just after wrapping up my working visit to the Ashanti Region, I joined an intelligence-led operation by the Ghana Police Service on behalf of the Forestry Commission of Ghana in a raid of about six illegal mining sites allegedly belonging to Akonta Mining (which is believed to be owned by the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the NPP, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi) in Samreboi, Western North Region.

“The exercise resulted in the arrest of 6 Chinese, 2 Koreans, and 18 Ghanaians. A total of 8 excavators were also taken, while 5 were abandoned at their locations due to mobility challenges,” he wrote.

Chairman Wontumi, in a quick riposte, has labeled these allegations as a “blantant lie” to associate him with illegal mining, locally known as galamsey.

Although he is the owner of Akonta Mining Limited, Antwi-Boasiako said in an interview with Wontumi FM and monitored by Ghanaweb that “I have a legitimate license to mine on my site but I have stopped mining in the area long ago due to what illegal miners did on my land”.

According to him, the only activity he has performed on his mining site is to pay for a contractor to “reclaim the land degraded by illegal miners” and “plant 15,000 coconut trees” on it.

He stressed he has neither a relationship with the illegal miners nor has his mining company harbored any.

“I have no idea who the illegal miners arrested by the police are and I am committed to protecting the environment of Ghana through legal mining despite Akonta Mining Limited not being in operation for some time now,” he vehemently denied Elikem Kotoko’s assertions.

On Thursday, April 17, 2025, Manchester United pulled off one of the greatest comebacks in football history to reach the semi-finals of the Europa League.

The record Premier League champions overturned a two-goal deficit to win 5–4 on the night, sealing a remarkable victory.

However, with United trailing 4–2 and just minutes remaining, many frustrated fans began heading for the exits.

As the Red Devils staged a dramatic late comeback, those fans were left watching the spectacle unfold on televisions outside the stadium.

In a wild, back-and-forth thriller, United had earlier squandered a two-goal lead and somehow found themselves trailing 4–2, despite Lyon being reduced to 10 men.

But the drama was far from over. A late surge, capped by Harry Maguire’s towering header, sent Old Trafford into absolute frenzy.

The win booked a Europa League semi-final clash with Athletic Club, keeping United’s hopes of silverware and Champions League qualification alive.

Above all, it delivered a night that will live long in the memory of every Manchester United fan fortunate enough to witness it.

Police arrest 26 in galamsey crackdown near Samreboi

0

The Police have arrested 26 people for illegal mining in a forest reserve near Samreboi in the Western Region.

The raid, carried out with intelligence support, is part of a broader effort to stop galamsey, which has caused severe environmental damage across Ghana.

The operation was led by multiple police units, including the Intelligence Directorate, CID, National Operations Directorate, and the Formed Police Unit. Officers stormed the mining site and detained six Chinese nationals, two Koreans and 18 Ghanaians suspected of working in the protected area.

Eight excavators were also confiscated, while five others were left behind due to transport difficulties.  Additionally, officers seized two Toyota Hilux pickup trucks, a Toyota RAV4, four motorbikes, and various mining equipment linked to the illegal activity.

Authorities linked the site to Akonta Mining Company, owned by Bernard Antwi Boasiako, also known as Chairman Wontumi. His name has surfaced in discussions about illegal mining in Ghana.

Police found several mining tools and weapons at the scene, including pump-action guns, water pumps, excavators, payloaders, machetes, and vehicles. The environmental damage was severe, with vast sections of land destroyed and water bodies polluted.

The suspects remain in custody and will face legal proceedings soon.

Inspector General of Police Christian Tetteh Yohuno has reaffirmed the police’s commitment to ending illegal mining and protecting Ghana’s natural resources.

Ghana will host an Extraordinary Meeting of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Council of Ministers on April 22–23 in Accra, marking the official launch of the Community’s 50th Anniversary celebrations.

More than a ceremonial occasion, the launch presents a strategic moment to reflect on ECOWAS’ achievements over the past five decades and chart a path forward.

The meeting, bringing together Foreign Affairs and Finance Ministers from all member states, will focus on the recent withdrawal of Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger—collectively known as the Alliance of Sahelian States—from ECOWAS.

The Ministers will prepare a comprehensive report for review by the Authority of Heads of State.

The event will follow the formal launch of the ECOWAS@50 celebrations on Tuesday, April 22, at the Accra International Conference Centre.

At a press briefing on Thursday, Minister for Foreign Affairs,  Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa shared updates on preparations.

He revealed that both the anniversary theme and official logo will be unveiled during the launch.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of Nigeria, Chair of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State, is expected to attend alongside all other ECOWAS heads of state. Representatives from Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger have also been invited.

“It is a great source of national pride that Ghana was chosen to host this historic event,” said Mr. Ablakwa. “This honour is a fitting tribute to Ghana’s legacy as a cradle of Pan-Africanism and a leader in regional integration.”

Established on May 28, 1975, the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) aims to promote regional integration through policy harmonization, resource pooling, and collective efforts to address the region’s challenges.

Accra, April 18, 2025 — The Regional Communications Manager of Ghana Water Limited (GWL) for Accra East, Nana Yaw Barima Barnie, has appealed to residents experiencing water supply disruptions to report directly to the nearest GWL office for timely intervention.

Speaking on Channel One TV’s Breakfast Daily, Barnie emphasized the critical role of community engagement in resolving water challenges, particularly amid ongoing concerns about intermittent water supply in parts of the Greater Accra Region.

“If their water is not flowing, they should do well to approach us… There is always an office nearby,” Barnie noted. “Once a complaint is made, we will follow up and see how we can help restore water supply.”

Dire Water Shortages in Communities Like Nungua

A recent Channel One News report spotlighted worsening water shortages in areas such as Leisure Street in Nungua, where local food vendors and small businesses are increasingly reliant on expensive private water vendors to stay operational.

Residents across the region have expressed growing frustration, citing disruptions to daily routines and rising living costs. The situation has prompted urgent calls for systematic improvements and communication from utility providers.

GWL Ready to Respond to Official Complaints

Barnie assured the public that GWL is prepared to act on officially lodged complaints, urging customers to utilize GWL’s customer service network to facilitate quicker solutions.

“They understand the importance of water in our daily life. Without water, life is impossible,” he added. “We expect that if consumers are not getting water, they will kindly approach us—and we will assist.”

Entertainment pundit and media personality MC Portfolio has asserted that he plays a pivotal role in Kumasi’s entertainment scene, adding that any artiste looking to work on a project in the city must go through him.

Speaking in an interview with Nana Romeo on Accra FM, MC Portfolio stated that he has been so richly blessed by God that he has become the go-to person for entertainment matters in Kumasi.

According to him, he sees himself as an indispensable figure in the city’s entertainment space, not just a visible presence, but a trusted and reliable contact that artistes and industry stakeholders consistently turn to.

“God has blessed me in such a way that any artiste wanting to undertake a project in Kumasi must go through me,” he stated.

He went on to give an example of how his influence played a role in Shatta Wale, launching his “Ahodwo Las Vegas” project in Kumasi.

MC Portfolio noted that he served as a PR person for Shatta Wale’s project in Kumasi, and has also been actively influencing decisions, including artistes’ selection for the project.

“When Shatta Wale wanted to launch his Ahodwo Las Vegas project, I served as the public relations officer, and Andy Dosty introduced me as the go-to person for any project in Kumasi. That’s when I suggested some names to Shatta Wale, which helped me build a rapport with him,” he shared.

MC Portfolio also addressed critics who have labelled him a hypocrite for working with both Shatta Wale and Stonebwoy, two artistes known for their longstanding rivalry.

He defended his decision and emphasised the importance of professionalism in the industry.

“Some people call me a hypocrite, but what they don’t understand is that before I committed to working for Stonebwoy, I already had a relationship with Shatta Wale. I play my role in everyone’s life and then get back to my lane,” he said.

Easter teaches the power of self-sacrifice – Kwasi Pratt Jnr

The Managing Editor of the Insight Newspaper, Kwasi Pratt Jnr The Managing Editor of the Insight Newspaper, Kwasi Pratt Jnr

The Managing Editor of the Insight Newspaper, Kwasi Pratt Jnr, has emphasised that the core message of Easter is the power of self-sacrifice for the greater good.

He explained that the season transcends religious boundaries and holds deep significance for all, particularly for revolutionaries committed to dismantling systems of exploitation.

Pratt noted that while Easter is rooted in Christian tradition, its central principle should resonate with anyone seeking social transformation.

“The most important principle or lesson of Easter is self-sacrifice for the general good, and this goes beyond religious sectarianism,” he stated in a post shared on social media on April 18, 2025.

He urged all change-seekers, especially revolutionaries, to understand the weight and seriousness of their mission.

“It is essential for all those pursuing any cause, especially revolutionaries who seek to overthrow the existing order of exploitation, domination, and oppression, to be ready to make the ultimate sacrifice,” he said.

Pratt added that true assurance of victory does not lie in blind faith but in scientific validation and unwavering commitment to the cause.

“The assurance of victory comes from the validation of our methods and vision by science, and our determination to overcome all obstacles,” he declared.

Drawing a parallel between the crucifixion of Jesus Christ and the struggles faced by revolutionary movements, Pratt argued that even those who reject religious dogma can draw important lessons from the Easter story.

“The crucifixion of Jesus the Christ and the lessons drawn from it are important for the advancement of the world, even for those of us who refuse to embrace superstition.”

He concluded, “The slogan Victory or Death makes sense within this context.”

Gold Fields sues government over termination of Damang Mine lease

The legal move follows the government's decision not to renew the company's 30-year lease The legal move follows the government’s decision not to renew the company’s 30-year lease

Reports from the Africa Centre for Energy Policy (ACEP) indicate that Abosso Goldfields Limited, a subsidiary of mining giant Gold Fields Limited, has taken legal action against the Government of Ghana following the termination of its mining lease for the Damang site.

The legal move follows the government’s decision not to renew the company’s 30-year lease, a stance reportedly influenced by pressure from local youth who have accused the company of failing to contribute meaningfully to community development.

With the lease set to expire on Friday, April 18, 2025, the government has assumed operational control of the Damang Mine.

In an official statement, the government cited the company’s inability to declare verifiable mineral reserves as a critical reason for rejecting Abosso Goldfields Limited’s lease renewal application.

Gold Fields Limited, one of the world’s leading gold producers, operates two major mining sites in Ghana: the Tarkwa Mine, managed by Gold Fields Ghana, and the Damang Mine, operated by Abosso Goldfields Limited.

The company gained full operational control of the Damang Mine in 2011 after acquiring IAMGold’s remaining shares.

Currently, Gold Fields holds a 90% ownership stake in the Damang Mine, while the Government of Ghana retains the remaining 10%.

Manchester United staged a remarkable comeback against French side Lyon, securing a thrilling 5-4 victory in the UEFA Europa League on Thursday, April 17, 2025.

United responded with renewed intensity. Bruno Fernandes converted a penalty to narrow the gap, Kobbie Mainoo equalized in the 120th minute, and a dramatic header from Harry Maguire sealed a stunning 5-4 victory at Old Trafford.

Orthodox Christians in Bulgaria Observe Good Friday

0

Sofia, April 18, BTA/GNA – Orthodox Christians in Bulgaria observe Good Friday. On this day, the Orthodox Church commemorates the death of Christ on the Cross. Good Friday is the day of strictest fasting. By abstaining from water and food, believers express their compassion for Christ’s suffering.

In churches across the country, believers gather for morning services where twelve excerpts from the Gospel recounting Christ’s sufferings are read.

The rituals in the temples are dedicated to the crucifixion of Jesus Christ.

At Orthodox Christian churches in Bulgaria, a replica of the Holy Shroud, in which his body was wrapped after being taken down from the cross, is taken out as a symbol of Jesus Christ’s divine presence on earth.

Before the service begins, Christ’s “tomb” is erected in the middle of the church, decorated with flowers, and the shroud is placed on the throne – a piece of cloth on which the image of the Saviour laid in the tomb is embroidered. Nowadays the shroud is usually placed on a table and Orthodox Christians pass under it and pray for health and divine favour.
For church ritual, this action has the value of bowing before the tomb of the Lord, and for folk tradition this is the hope of health.

The evening service focuses on Christ’s death.

Over 200 expected to fly

0

The 2025 Kwahu Paragliding festival is underway at the Odweanoma Paragliding site in Kwahu, with more than 200 people expected to take flight this year.

Already, seven tandem pilots have taken off with 13 passengers, setting the stage for a vibrant Easter celebration.

To add to the excitement, the Ghana Tourism Authority has introduced a range of new activities to engage visitors at the site. These include indoor games and a designated children’s playground, all designed to make the event more inclusive and enjoyable for families.
Rev. Jones Nelson, Head of Corporate Affairs at the Ghana Tourism Authority, highlighted the expanded offerings and flight expectations.

“This year, we have added a few activities to make it very interesting. We’ll be having some playing cards, ludo, oware, skating and others, as well as laying areas for children. And we are hoping that if we have favourable weather, we’ll have like 200 flights. We have done 200 and over 200 before.”
Even as the festival draws crowds, concerns persist over the poor condition of the road leading from Atibie to the paragliding site.

Drivers on the Mpraeso-Atibie stretch stated that repeated promises by successive governments to fix the road have not been fulfilled.

“They charge us every year to fix the road, but the road hasn’t seen any improvement. It is difficult to ply on the road during the rainy season, so we plead with the government to come to our aid. They were charging us 5 cedis last year but 10 cedis for this year,” a commercial driver complained.
Meanwhile, excitement continues to build among thrill-seekers. Abigail Ashley, the first person to fly at this year’s festival, described the experience as exhilarating and urged the Ghana Tourism Authority to train local pilots and expand the event beyond Easter.

“The experience was fine. I wanted to do it, so I came with full vim and I conquered. I got a good pilot, so it made it more fun. Aside from the wind that blows against you in the beginning, the experience is great. This should be done regularly, they shouldn’t open up just for Easter.”

As festivities continue, organisers are hopeful that favourable weather will allow all interested participants to enjoy their flight, making this year’s event another successful highlight on Ghana’s tourism calendar.

NPP condemns Hopeson Adorye’s alleged threats against Jennifer Queen

0

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has strongly condemned alleged threats of assault made by Hopeson Yaovi Adorye, a panelist from the Movement for Change, against Jennifer Oforiwaa Queen, the NPP’s Deputy Director of Communications.

The incident reportedly occurred during a live broadcast of UTV’s morning show, sparking widespread backlash and calls for accountability.

In a statement dated April 17 and signed by NPP Communications Director Richard Ahiagbah, the party expressed serious concern over the development and underscored the need to protect women’s rights to participate in politics without fear or intimidation.

“Ghana has made significant strides in driving women’s political participation and amplifying their voices in our national discourse. Threats of assault — or actual assault — on women for expressing their political views must not be tolerated,” the statement noted.

The NPP further urged media outlets, particularly UTV, to uphold standards of respectful and democratic dialogue on their platforms and remain vigilant against any conduct that undermines Ghana’s democratic values and commitment to free speech.

Three more Nigerian girls rescued from trafficking in Ghana, repatriated home

0

Three Nigerian teenage girls trafficked to Ghana have been rescued and safely returned to the country, the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) confirmed on Friday.

In a statement signed by Abdur-Rahman Balogun, Director of Media, Public Relations and Protocols at NiDCOM, the agency revealed that the victims, Divine, Favour, and Bright, aged between 17 and 19, were deceived by their aunts with promises of employment, only to be forced into prostitution.

The girls were officially received at the NiDCOM office in Lagos on Thursday and subsequently handed over to the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) for profiling and rehabilitation.

Abike Dabiri-Erewa, Chairman/CEO of NiDCOM,  who addressed the media during the reception, lamented the continued silence surrounding human traffickers and called for a more aggressive stance.

“Until we begin to name and shame the perpetrators of this modern-day slavery, human trafficking will not end,” she said.

Dabiri-Erewa also commended Callistus Elozieuwa, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Nigerians in Diaspora Organisation (NIDO) Ghana, for working closely with Ghanaian security agencies to rescue victims.

She acknowledged the Nigerian Embassy in Ghana for its consular support and praised  Oluremi Tinubu, First Lady, for facilitating the girls’ return home.

The commission disclosed that more than 169 Nigerians have been repatriated from Ghana in recent months, underscoring the persistent threat posed by human trafficking networks.

The rescued girls, originally from Bayelsa and Ebonyi States, are now in the custody of the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP), where they will receive further support and rehabilitation.

Kendrick Lamar’s Super Bowl, Grammy performance orchestrated to assassinate my character – Drake

0

Drake has claimed that he was defamed by Kendrick Lamar’s Super Bowl halftime show, and at the Grammy Awards, where over 100 million combined television viewers heard Lamar’s notorious diss track “Not Like Us,” according to court filings.

The Canadian rapper levelled the new allegations Wednesday in an expanded federal defamation lawsuit against his own record label, Universal Music Group.

Drake originally filed the lawsuit in connection with the track in January.

“These prestigious and high-exposure events introduced new listeners” to the allegedly defamatory song, Drake’s lawyers wrote in the latest filing.

“Not only did streams of the Recording increase significantly following these two mega-cultural events, but threats against Drake and his family did as well,” the lawyers added.

Drake’s current label is Republic Records, a division of UMG. Lamar – who is not named in the lawsuit – is an Interscope Records artist, also a division of UMG. Drake’s amended complaint does not accuse Pulitzer Prize-winner Lamar of any wrongdoing.

UMG has argued that the lawsuit should be dismissed, and their motion is still pending.

“Drake, unquestionably one of the world’s most accomplished artists and with whom we’ve enjoyed a 16-year successful relationship, is being misled by his legal representatives into taking one absurd legal step after another,” UMG told CNN in a statement on Thursday, in response to Drake’s amended lawsuit.

The dispute stems from last year’s epic feud between rappers Drake and Lamar, who traded increasingly personal and unverified insults in a series of songs. In “Not Like Us,” Lamar claimed Drake was a “certified pedophile,” an allegation that Drake vehemently denies.

That song was “broadcast to the largest audience for a Super Bowl halftime show ever,” Drake’s lawyers wrote Wednesday, adding, “It was the first, and will hopefully be the last, Super Bowl halftime show orchestrated to assassinate the character of another artist.”

During the halftime show, Lamar skipped over the “certified pedophile” line, but did rap another line where he accused Drake of targeting young girls – a moment that went viral.

In Wednesday’s filing, Drake’s lawyers argued that Lamar didn’t utter the song’s most famous lyric because “nearly everyone understands that it is defamatory.” They also claimed their damages were compounded because “the image of Lamar looking directly at the camera when he named Drake and stated that Drake ‘likes ’em young… became a viral meme.”

One week before the Super Bowl, at the Grammys, Lamar took home five awards, including record of the year and song of the year. He didn’t perform “Not Like Us” during the ceremony, but snippets were played on multiple occasions when Lamar won his Grammys, and the crowd audibly sang along to another controversial line about Drake.

CNN previously reported that Lamar’s Super Bowl performance earned an average of 133.5 million viewers, making it the “most-watched Super Bowl halftime performance in history” according to Fox, the big show’s broadcaster. According to the Hollywood Reporter, the Grammys drew in 15.4 million viewers when it aired in January.

UMG has repeatedly denied Drake’s defamation allegations, and his claims that the label paid to inflate online streams of the song, and says his lawsuit is both “illogical” and “frivolous.” UMG says the lawsuit could restrict free-speech protections for musical artists.

Drake was handed an early procedural victory earlier this month, when Judge Jeannette Vargas rejected an attempt by UMG to pause the legal fact-finding process known as “discovery.” Judge Vargas said Drake can move forward with and pursue UMG’s documents about the Super Bowl performance, the Grammy Awards, Lamar’s record contract, and more.

“With discovery now moving forward, Drake will expose the evidence of UMG’s misconduct, and UMG will be held accountable for the consequences of its ill-conceived decisions,” Drake’s lawyer, Michael Gottlieb, told CNN in a statement Thursday.

Regarding the recent ruling, UMG said, “Drake will personally be subject to discovery as well. As the old saying goes, ‘be careful what you wish for.’”

Later on Thursday, Drake’s lawyers told CNN, in part, “Drake knows exactly what he asked for: the truth and accountability.”

The lawsuit is still in its initial stages. If there isn’t an out-of-court settlement, which is common in defamation cases, the trial is on track to potentially begin in summer 2026.

Trump administration set to close down numerous US embassies with 60% in Africa

0

US President Donald Trump US President Donald Trump

The Donald Trump administration is said to be proposing major cuts to the United States (US) State Department’s budget, with plans to reduce it by over $30 billion, more than half, for the 2026 fiscal year.

According to CNN journalist Larry Madowo, this cost-cutting initiative includes the closure of up to 30 US diplomatic missions worldwide, with around 60% of the affected posts located in Africa.

In a video shared on his X platform on April 17, 2025, Madowo cited an internal memo indicating that the Trump administration intends to shut down at least 27 diplomatic missions, including both embassies and consulates, primarily in Africa and Europe.

The said memo also outlines plans to transition some missions to lower-cost operational models and consolidate multi-mission posts, such as the one at UNESCO in Paris.

These proposed closures are part of a broader strategy to reduce foreign aid by nearly 75% and restructure the US diplomatic corps in line with the administration’s “America First” agenda.

Among the African countries likely to see embassy closures, if the plan is approved, are South Sudan, Lesotho, The Gambia, Eritrea, the Republic of Congo, and the Central African Republic.

“They also want to shut down the consulates in Douala in Cameroon and in Durban, South Africa, and reduce the size of the mission in Mogadishu, Somalia,” Madowo reported.

While the proposal remains under review and has yet to be finalised, the US State Department, the White House, and the Office of Management and Budget have not issued any official comments on the matter.

Meanwhile, the potential impact of these closures is significant, especially in Africa, where US embassies play vital roles in diplomacy, development aid, and regional security cooperation.

Critics have warned that reducing the US diplomatic footprint could weaken American influence on the continent at a time when global competition for strategic partnerships is intensifying.

The proposed downsizing is however expected to also spark concern among diplomats, lawmakers, and international partners, who fear long-term consequences for US foreign policy and global engagement.

No global recession despite US tariffs

0

IMF Managing Director, Kristalina Georgieva IMF Managing Director, Kristalina Georgieva

Trade tariff uncertainty is “literally off the charts” but there will not be a global recession, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) has said.

The international economic group said in its forecast for the world economy that global share prices have dropped “as trade tensions flared” and warned about an “erosion of trust” between countries.

However, it stopped short of predicting a worldwide recession, saying “our new growth projections will include notable markdowns, but not recession”.

The comments come as leaders and businesses respond to US President Donald Trump’s “Liberation Day” tariffs announced on 2 April.

Global stock markets plummeted following the announcement and many have not recovered since – with the FTSE 100 index of the largest firms listed in the UK still 4.6% lower than a month ago.

Meanwhile, predictions of a global recession have risen as firms slash spending and investment amid the uncertainty and some countries respond to Trump with tariffs of their own.

On Wednesday, the World Trade Organization (WTO) forecast that global trade will fall this year because of Trump’s tariffs.

It follows similar comments from the Bank of England, which has said that rising trade tensions from tariffs have “contributed to a material increase in the risk to global growth” and financial stability.

Meanwhile, the European Central Bank (ECB) said on Thursday it had reduced its key interest rate “owing to rising trade tensions”.

But the IMF’s outlook is rosier by contrast. “[This] is a call to respond wisely,” said IMF managing director Kristalina Georgieva on Thursday.

“A better balanced, more resilient world economy is within reach. We must act to secure it.”

She added “all countries must redouble efforts to put their own houses in order” in response to the uncertainty.

She specifically called on Europe to cut down on “restrictions on internal trade in services” and “deepen” its single market.

She also said China needs to increase its social safety net so that there is less “precautionary saving” and said the US government needs to reduce its debt.

President of the Confederation of African Football Patrice Motsepe talks to media President of the Confederation of African Football Patrice Motsepe talks to media

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has fined its president’s club $100,000 after violent fan clashes at an African Champions League game between two teams that are going to the FIFA Club World Cup in the United States this summer.

Mamelodi Sundowns, owned by Patrice Motsepe – a South African mining billionaire and FIFA vice president – breached safety and security rules hosting an April 1 game against Esperance of Tunisia, CAF said in a disciplinary ruling late Thursday.

Motsepe has been president of African football’s governing body CAF for four years and was re-elected unopposed last month.

The African football body said Sundowns “is required to strictly implement the safety and security measures specified in the CAF regulations, guidelines and directives, particularly in their upcoming matches”.

Esperance was fined $150,000 for the fan misconduct, CAF said, related to clashes in the stands at the quarterfinal, first-leg game.

Sundowns won the first leg 1-0 in Pretoria and advanced to the semifinals after the return game ended 0-0 in Tunis one week later. The South African team on Saturday hosts Al Ahly of Egypt – another Club World Cup team – in the first leg of the semifinals.

Sundowns and Esperance are both coming to the US in June as two of Africa’s four entries in the first 32-team Club World Cup organised by FIFA.

Both qualified because of consistently good results over four years in the CAF Champions League through 2024.

Sundowns has been drawn in a Club World Cup group with Ulsan of South Korea, Borussia Dortmund of Germany and Fluminense of Brazil, playing games in Orlando, Cincinnati and Miami.

Esperance is in a group with Chelsea of England, Brazil’s Flamengo and a third team that was to be Leon, which FIFA disqualified because it is in the same ownership as another Mexican team that qualified, Pachuca. Those games are in Philadelphia and Nashville.

Leon has a May 5 hearing with the Court of Arbitration for Sport in Madrid in its appeal against FIFA’s ruling. The Club World Cup is played in 11 US cities from June 14 to July 13.

But he was taken aback by the arguments made in three social media petitions that he had examined.

While acknowledging that social media can be a source of false information, Osei-Owusu questioned the legitimacy of the petitions if their substance is factual in an interview with Channel One’s Newsroom on Thursday, April 17.

Passengers stranded at neoplan station amid vehicle shortage for Easter travel

Dozens of passengers travelling to Kwahu, Kumasi, and other parts of the country for the Easter festivities have been left stranded at the Neoplan Station in Accra due to a severe shortage of available vehicles.

On Friday, April 18, Channel One News observed long queues of frustrated commuters who had waited for hours without success. Many passengers expressed deep concerns about the lack of adequate transport arrangements despite the high demand typically associated with the Easter season.
One of the stranded passengers, Alex, who was heading to Techiman, shared his frustration.

“I have been here since morning, around 7:30 am. I am going to Techiman, and there is no car. When you ask the station masters, they say that there are cars on the way, so we should wait, and up till now we have not seen any cars. And this is very troubling and very stressful.”

Another commuter, Queen Mira, echoed similar concerns, lamenting the uncertainty surrounding vehicle availability.

“I have been here since 7 am, and we are told the bus is on the way, but nothing is showing that there is a bus coming. It is a big problem for us.”
As the situation persisted, drivers at the station joined in voicing their grievances. They appealed to the government to step in by providing additional buses during festive periods to help manage the seasonal rush and ease the burden on both passengers and transport operators.

Kennedy Owusu Adei, one of the drivers, noted the challenges on the ground.

“Everything is going on well, but we do not have many cars to transport the passengers to their destination. For festivals like this, I guess the government can come in and provide some buses to aid in easing the tension.”

Prince Ashitey, another driver, noted that beyond the shortage of vehicles, the poor road conditions further worsen the travel experience for both drivers and passengers.

“There are a lot of people here heading to Kwahu, but there are not enough cars to convey them. The road is very bad as well, and before you drive here to Nkawkaw, you’re tired already. We are pleading with the government to come and help us.”
