Joseph Osei-Owusu, former First Deputy Speaker of Parliament, has stated that the process for removing Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo cannot be swayed by the President as reported by Citinewsroom.

His comments come in response to three petitions circulating on social media calling for her removal.

Osei-Owusu expressed surprise at the content of the petitions, questioning their credibility.

“My position is that the process cannot be influenced by the president,” he said, adding that he would be “very much surprised and disappointed” if the grounds listed in the petitions were valid.

While acknowledging that social media can spread misinformation, Osei-Owusu raised concerns about the validity of the petitions.

“If that is truly the content, the basis for which the petitioners are asking that the CJ be removed, I will be very surprised, disappointed and truly embarrassed if any committee will come to a conclusion that based on such petition, the CJ of Ghana will be removed,” he said.

The former deputy speaker stressed the importance of judicial independence and warned that any move to remove the Chief Justice should be grounded in substantial and credible evidence.

“We need to protect judicial independence,” he emphasized, revealing that the integrity of the judiciary must remain intact.
