Government won’t just hand out money; every amount will be utilized – James Gardiner”

Deputy Executive Secretary of the NFA, James Gardiner Deputy Executive Secretary of the NFA, James Gardiner

Popular actor and Deputy Executive Secretary of the National Film Authority (NFA), James Gardiner, has assured that the NFA is ready to maximize any budget allocated to the creative arts sector.

Speaking in an interview with GhanaWeb’s Isaac Dadzie on March 28, 2025, Gardiner expressed optimism that the NFA would secure adequate government support.

He further assured that his outfit would work to justify the resources allocated and utilize them to the best of their ability.

“Hopefully, we get a very big chunk, but whichever amount is allocated to us, we have to try and work with it because you and I know the government is not just going to be handing out money as well. So we have to be up and busy, up and running, and make sure we make the most of it,” he said.

Speaking on what the NFA has been up to since he assumed office in February, Gardiner said he and other new executives have been taking a cautious approach by engaging with stakeholders and identifying problems that need to be tackled.

“When you assume office like this, you have to be very careful in navigating things. You don’t just rush and start doing anything just to prove a point or to make everyone know that you’re busy. First of all, we have to identify the problems that exist, both in the office and in the industry as a whole.

“So, with that, we’ve met with the previous board members, some industry stakeholders, and heads of agencies, and we’ve gathered the issues that currently exist. That’s what we’re going to use as a basis to determine which ones need to be tackled as soon as possible,” he explained.

James Gardiner made these remarks at the 4th Edition of the Africa Music Business Dialogue, which took place in Accra.

The dialogue, hosted by musician Trigmatic under the theme “Unlocking Africa’s Creative Potential,” brought together various stakeholders, including showbiz entrepreneurs, event organizers, musicians, and many others.

‘Australia’s most tattooed woman’ is ‘unrecognisable’ after giving up one thing

0

A woman branded Australia’s ‘most tattooed’ has opened up about a struggle she went through that you might not know about at first glance – and coming out the other side has transformed her

Amber is ‘unrecognisable’ now

A woman has opened up about the ways she managed to transform her life, thanking the “tattoo community” in a hashtag in her caption.

Amber, who posts on Instagram as @amberluke666, showed a picture of herself from 2019, compared to one in 2025 – and it wasn’t your typical ‘before and after’ style image as there was a much deeper meaning to it.

While Amber, nicknamed ‘blue eyes white dragon’ thanks to her unique eyeball tattoos, looked lovely in both images, she explained in the caption the mental struggle she was going through when the first picture of her was taken.

She said that in the picture on the left, she was “high on meth every day” and barely wanted to “survive,” admitting that her mental health “was gone”. “I honestly thought there was no coming back,” she admitted.

In the right picture, however, she’s come so far and is a year and a half “off the substance”. “I own my luxe dream car, I have the most blessed little family of three girl puppers – but what I have now that I never used to is my mental gains,” Amber gushed.

She said that she “never thought” she would “see the day” where she’d be “off meth and stay off it.” “For seven years – every single morning…During the day, always nocturnal in the nighttime,” she remembered.

Amber continued, sharing that people used her drug usage against her as a weapon in the past. “Being called a junkie and a crackhead – not my finest years.

“But guess what, f**kers – you ain’t got nothing on me now,” Amber boasted as she shared her impressive progress.

She then ended the caption by sharing: “Building yourself up and giving yourself the kudos you DESERVE is necessary”.

In the comments, people were quick to tell her how proud they were of her and all the progress she’d made since that photograph on the left.

“You have come so far, and I’m proud of you,” someone wrote, with another adding: “Respect of the highest level to you, you are strong as f**k in so many ways”.

A fan of Amber’s penned: “Huge congratulations for overcoming addition; that is such a strong-minded and powerful thing to do!

“Even more so to talk about it here despite the stigma. You are breaking barriers and opening conversations for others that might save them, too.”

One of her friends said: “ABSOLUTELY THRIVING! Can’t stop, won’t stop, so proud, and you should be super proud of the person you are and are becoming! The future is looking so fierce for you!”

Minister of Communications, Digital Technology, and Innovations, Sam Nartey George, has hinted that former Ghana Post Managing Director, Bice Osei Kuffour—popularly known as Obour—could soon be called to account for alleged irregularities during his leadership at the state postal agency.

Obour recently resigned from his post after serving for two years, but his exit has not gone unnoticed amid a broader shake-up at the Ministry. His comments criticizing the dismissal of about 100 personnel across the Ministry and its agencies on March 25, 2025, appear to have sparked a strong reaction from the minister.

In a pointed Instagram post on March 26, Sam George wrote:

“Obour has offered to help. His offer is welcome—not to explain post-December 7th, 2024, recruitment, but rather the shady deals he engaged in as MD of Ghana Post. He would have his hands full soon in explaining his deeds at Ghana Post. He should exercise some patience.”

Though the minister did not outline specific allegations, the tone of his message has stirred public speculation about a potential investigation into Obour’s tenure, particularly regarding financial or administrative mismanagement.

Obour, who has yet to formally respond to Sam George’s claims, had earlier urged the minister to review all relevant documents before carrying out the retrenchment exercise, describing it as hasty.

The developing situation raises questions about governance practices at Ghana Post and whether more accountability measures are on the horizon.

Local Government Minister proposes sanitation levy to address Ghana’s waste management crisis

0

Ghana’s growing sanitation crisis could soon see a dedicated financial solution, as the Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy, and Religious Affairs, Ahmed Ibrahim, has announced plans to introduce a Sanitation Fund and Levy to tackle waste management challenges nationwide.

Speaking on the urgent need for sustainable funding, Mr Ibrahim stated, “When you are creating a fund, it means you are instituting a tax,” stressing that insufficient financial resources remain the biggest obstacle to solving the country’s sanitation problems.

The proposed levy, expected to be discussed when Parliament reconvenes, aims to provide a stable revenue stream to combat Ghana’s deteriorating waste management system.

According to a 2023 report by the World Bank, only 21 per cent of Ghanaians have access to improved sanitation facilities, with over 17,000 deaths annually attributed to poor sanitation and hygiene.

Ghana generates approximately 1.1 million metric tons of plastic waste annually, of which only 5 per cent is properly recycled, according to the Ghana Plastic Action Partnership.

The remainder contributes to severe environmental pollution, including clogged drains, flooding, and health hazards.

If implemented, the sanitation levy could significantly enhance waste collection services, improve public cleanliness initiatives, and upgrade sanitation infrastructure.

The government hopes to mirror successful models from countries like Rwanda, where strict sanitation policies and financial commitments have helped achieve a 90 per cent waste collection rate in Kigali.

Geopolitical tensions have heightened uncertainty, weighed negatively on consumer & business confidence

0

Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Dr Johnson Asiama has said that the global economy was resilient through 2024, supported by strong real income growth and a less restrictive monetary policy stance relative to 2023.

In the first few months of 2025, he said, trade frictions arising from an emerging tariff war, elevated
global interest rates, and geopolitical tensions have heightened uncertainty about the global growth outlook.

“These uncertainties have weighed negatively on consumer and business confidence, softened investor sentiment, and increased downside risks to growth,” Dr Asiama said during the 123rd Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) press conference held in Accra on Friday, March 28.

He added “The disinflation path has stalled in some Advanced Economies, on the back of persistence in services inflation, resurgence in goods inflation, and the recent tariff actions by the U.S. The imposition of additional tariffs by the U.S. and retaliatory responses have pushed up long-term inflation expectations in some Emerging Market Economies. In addition, the process of disinflation, which was
expected to be supported by a decline in crude oil prices, could be partly offset by the effect of the tariff increases. Against this backdrop, global inflation is expected to remain high in the near-term.”

Regarding the Policy Rate, the MPC, by a majority decision, decided to increase it from 27 per cent to 28.

Dr Asiama said that “While headline inflation has declined marginally, it remains a concern. Both food and non-food inflation are significantly above expectation, and core inflation remains elevated. While food inflation was driven largely by supply side factors, preventing second-round effects from such increases will be essential.

Read Also: Monetary Policy Committee of Bank of Ghana raises Policy Rate to 28%

“The persistent inflation dynamics over the past year, partly driven by both fiscal and monetary policy missteps, will require a policy reset to re-anchor the disinflation process. To restore price stability going forward will require a tight monetary policy stance, strong liquidity management, and commitment to the 2025 budget which seeks to reset the fiscal consolidation process.

“Under the circumstances, the Committee, by a majority decision, decided to raise the Monetary Policy Rate by 100 basis points to 28 percent to re-anchor the disinflation process. As inflation becomes firmly anchored, the Committee will reassess the scope for a gradual easing in the policy stance,” he said.

During the opening day of the sitting, Dr Asaiama said that while inflation is easing, it remains uncomfortably high, at over 23%.

He noted that progress has been slow, particularly on a month-on-month basis.

For instance, he said, structural drivers of food inflation remain persistent. He also stated that the external environment, though currently supportive, is becoming increasingly volatile.

“We’ve seen a strong trade surplus and solid reserve build-up on the back of gold exports and remittance flows. But a possible escalation in global tariff wars, rising geopolitical tensions, and weakening Chinese demand could quickly shift the dynamics. These global factors could also have spillover effects on inflation, capital flows, and exchange rate stability,” Dr Asiama said during the 123rd sitting of the MPC on Monday, March 24.

Domestically, Dr Asiama said, the 2024 fiscal outturn was expansionary, with the deficit exceeding program targets.

“We have seen encouraging signs of consolidation early in 2025, but questions remain as to whether current measures are adequate to anchor expectations and satisfy upcoming IMF program reviews.”

He also notes that financial conditions are evolving quickly. Liquidity in the system has increased, commercial banks have raised concerns about the Capital Requirements Regulations (CRR) framework, and “we must carefully assess its macrofinancial implications—especially with respect to inflation, foreign exchange demand, and credit growth.”

While private sector credit is recovering in nominal terms, real credit growth remains modest, he said.

“Banks are still cautious, and Non-Performing Loan (NPL) levels remain a concern. Meanwhile, our microfinance and rural banking sectors are showing early signs of stability, but recapitalization and regulatory reforms must continue to preserve confidence.

“We must also acknowledge that some of today’s challenges stem from earlier monetary and fiscal policy missteps—particularly loose fiscal policy during periods of macro stress, weak monetary fiscal coordination, and delays in key structural reforms. These contributed to elevated inflation, impaired policy transmission, and a loss of credibility. It is essential that we reflect on these issues—not to assign blame, but to strengthen our institutions and avoid repeating past mistakes.”

Dr Asiama also that there are also deeper, structural issues we must not lose sight of—such as underinvestment in agriculture, persistent exchange rate misalignments, and the need to deepen domestic financial markets.

These are outside the scope of today’s immediate rate decision, but they will shape the broader monetary policy landscape over the medium term, he said.

In short, he added “we are facing a convergence of risks: stubborn inflation, elevated liquidity, soft real interest rates, a fragile fiscal recovery, and growing external uncertainty. But we also have buffers—strong reserves, improving sentiment, and the credibility of our policy framework—to guide us.

“Our task over the next few days is to weigh these developments rigorously, and to reach a policy stance that reinforces the disinflation path without undermining the recovery or destabilizing market expectations. I trust that our discussions will be candid, evidence-based, and guided by our shared mandate of maintaining price stability and supporting sustainable growth.

Heritage Month Cooking Competition showcases Ghana’s culinary richness

0

As Ghana celebrates its Heritage Month in March, the Gaming Commission of Ghana organised a cooking competition on Thursday, March 27, 2025, to promote indigenous Ghanaian foods.

The event brought together cooking enthusiasts to showcase the country’s rich culinary heritage.

Acting Director of the Gaming Commission, Emmanuel Quainoo, highlighted the motive behind organising the programme was to promote the consumption of indigenous foods and celebrate Ghana’s rich cultural heritage.

“Contestants were tasked with preparing traditional Ghanaian dishes using locally sourced ingredients. Moving forward, the plan is to have an inter-sector competition among all commissions under the Interior Ministry,” he said.

The competition featured five groups representing the Ashanti, Northern, Southern, Western, and Volta zones.

A judge for the competition, Elizabeth Akosua Agyapong, emphasised cleanliness as a fundamental requirement when cooking, which was also a key criterion in scoring contestants.

“Time, cleanliness, and the presentation of the food were used in scoring the contestants. The Western Zone met most of my expectations, though the other groups also performed well,” she said.

The Western Zone, which prepared braised rice, boiled plantain with kontomire, and garden egg stew, emerged as the winner.

A member of the group, Benedicta Andoh, explained that the choice of food was selected through a ballot.

However, with adequate preparation, they were able to win the competition.

“Being optimistic about winning, I was not too surprised when my group emerged victorious because I am an expert in preparing boiled plantain with kontomire and garden egg stew. Though we faced some challenges in the beginning, I am glad we won in the end,” she said.

Ghanaian cuisine is renowned for its rich flavours, creativity, and its unique ability to bring people together.

Africa Zone, a proud sponsor of the competition, expressed its commitment to preserving family values, including cooking.

“For us, cooking is what we do. It is a way for families and members of an organisation to come together. We saw this competition as an opportunity to reinforce our values in partnership with the Gaming Commission,” a representative from Africa Zone stated.

As we continue to celebrate Ghana’s Heritage Month, let us remember the importance of preserving our cultural heritage and promoting indigenous Ghanaian foods.

Goldbod will not encourage illegal mining

Sammy Gyamfi is the Acting MD of PMMC Sammy Gyamfi is the Acting MD of PMMC

The Acting Managing Director of the Precious Minerals Marketing Company (PMMC), Sammy Gyamfi, has stated that the GoldBod is coming to end illegal mining.

This, he said, forms part of the entity’s quest to buy and sell gold to deal with the recurrent ravages from the effects of illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey, in the country.

His comment comes im reaction to a press conference held by the Minority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Kwamina Afenyo-Markin, during which he claimed that the Golbod was rather going to enhance the activities of illegal mining in the country.

But, according to Sammy Gyamfi, the work of the Goldbod is rather to streamline work of the sector and eliminate the activities of such unauthorised miners.

“Goldbod is coming to end illegal mining as our work of buying and selling gold will deal with illegal small-scale miners.

“This will force out the illegal miners as their activities will no longer be recognised, while they will be dealt with when they attempt to smuggle gold,” he told journalists at Parliament on Friday, March 28, 2025.

Earlier, Sammy Gyamfi had indicated his strong conviction that the Golbod bill currently before Parliament will be passed before the House rises.

Both sides of the House have so far expressed great enthusiasm about the bill, with the Minority making few suggestions aimed at enhancing the bill.

Nsoatreman FC Withdraws from Ghana Premier League Over Safety Concerns

Premier League club, Nsoatreman FC, has officially withdrawn from the ongoing Ghana Premier League, citing security concerns for their players.

In a letter signed by the Club President, Ignatius Baffuor Awuah, and sent via the club’s official email on March 14, 2025, Nsoatreman FC stated that recent incidents in their matches against Asante Kotoko SC and FC Samartex 1996 had raised serious safety issues. Unable to guarantee their players’ security, the club’s management and board decided to pull out of the league.

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) engaged the club in discussions but failed to resolve the issue. As a result, the GFA has activated competition regulations and referred the matter to its prosecutor for disciplinary action.

According to Article 13(5) of the league regulations, all remaining Nsoatreman FC matches will be considered forfeited, with their opponents awarded three points and three goals per fixture.

Akua Donkor to be buried on March 29

Founder and leader of the Ghana Freedom Party, Akua Donkor Founder and leader of the Ghana Freedom Party, Akua Donkor

The founder and leader of the Ghana Freedom Party (GFP), Akua Donkor, will be laid to rest on Saturday, March 29, 2025, at Ejuratia in the Ashanti Region.

According to details from a funeral poster sighted by GhanaWeb, the final rites will begin with a lying-in-state, followed by a burial service and an afternoon funeral ceremony.

She passed away on October 28, 2024, at Ridge Hospital in Accra.

A passionate advocate for farmers, women, and journalists, Akua Donkor stood out in Ghanaian politics for her commitment to grassroots communities, often using a bold and comical approach to capture public attention.

Popularly recognised by her slogan, “3ny3 nono,” her political journey began when she was elected as an Assemblywoman for Herman.

Her first attempt at the presidency was in 2012, but she was disqualified for failing to meet the eligibility requirements. Undeterred, she continued her political aspirations, later supporting Papa Kwesi Nduom of the Progressive People’s Party (PPP) in that election year.

In 2016, a fire destroyed her party’s headquarters in Kabu, Akropong Constituency, Eastern Region, ultimately disqualifying her from the election.

Despite these setbacks, Akua Donkor remained a resilient and outspoken figure, advocating for grassroots needs and championing agricultural issues.

Listed as the third candidate on the ballot for the 2024 presidential election, she vowed to make significant changes if elected, outlining 18 ambitious promises.

These included completing the Saglemi Housing Project, providing free accommodation for public servants, increasing maternity leave from three months to one year, offering farmers financial support to expand their farms, refining petrol locally, providing clean and free water, and eradicating galamsey.

Her focus on agricultural and social reforms extended to pension support for farmers over 40, free cutlasses and fertilizers, and ensuring parliamentary representation for every trade.

Bank of Ghana raises policy rate to 28%

0

The Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) of the Bank of Ghana, by a majority decision, has raised the policy rate by 100 basis points to 28 per cent.

In addition to the adjustment in the policy rate, the Bank is implementing complementary measures to strengthen liquidity management and enhance monetary policy transmission.

Dr. Johnson Asiama, Governor, Bank of Ghana, said the Bank would introduce a 273-day instrument to augment the existing sterilization toolkit.

The Governor was speaking at the 23rd MPCs press briefing in Accra on Friday.

He said the Bank would also intensify the monitoring of banks’ Net Open Positions to ensure compliance and review the current structure of the Cash Reserve Ratio (CRR) to assess its broader impact on liquidity conditions and financial intermediation in the economy.

He said as inflation becomes firmly anchored, the Committee would reassess the scope for a gradual easing in the policy stance.

He said the Committee noted that the global environment had become more challenging, reflecting trade and economic policy uncertainty.

He said the series of tariffs announced by the U.S. administration was evolving and might have negative effects on the global economy.

He said the persistence of these external headwinds might spill over to the domestic economy through the trade and financial channels, highlighting the need for policy to remain proactive.

He said on the domestic front, early indications point to improved growth prospects.

The Governor said the Bank’s CIEA rebounded, and the Ghana Purchasing Managers’ Index moved above the 50-benchmark in February, implying increases in new orders by companies.

“Both business and consumer confidence have improved, and private sector credit growth was recovering and these developments suggest a positive outlook for the economy,” he said.

Dr Asiama said the external sector outlook remained strong and this was against the backdrop of increases in gold exports driven by sustained implementation of the Gold-for Reserve programme, continued growth in remittance inflows, and commitment to the implementation of policies and reforms under the IMF programme.

He said the continued buildup of reserve buffers was expected to support the stability of the currency.

He said the banking sector had remained broadly stable and Credit risks within the banking sector, however, remained elevated, as underscored by increased non-performing loan ratios.

The Bank’s latest macroprudential risk assessment indicates some moderation in systemic risks on the back of improved solvency, liquidity, efficiency, and profitability, he said.

He said going forward, the Bank would continue to closely monitor undercapitalised banks to safeguard the stability and soundness of the banking sector.

The Committee observed that the fiscal stance was expansionary in 2024 and this had created significant fiscal impulses, and a liquidity overhang that needs to be carefully managed.

The strong liquidity conditions could spill over into other segments of the economy and derail the disinflation path.

“While the government has signalled a strong commitment to fiscal consolidation, monetary policy restraint is required,” he added.

While headline inflation has declined marginally, it remains a concern, both food and non-food inflation are significantly above expectation, and core inflation remains elevated.

He said while food inflation was driven largely by supply side factors, preventing second-round effects from such increases would be essential.

The Governor said the persistent inflation dynamics over the past year, partly driven by both fiscal and monetary policy missteps, would require a policy reset to re-anchor the disinflation process.

“To restore price stability going forward would require a tight monetary policy stance, strong liquidity management, and commitment to the 2025 budget which seeks to reset the fiscal consolidation process,” he added.

Mahama goes after Akufo-Addo’s travel bills – orders immediate investigation

0

President John Dramani Mahama is calling for investigation into the travel reports of former president Akuffo Addo.

President John Mahama has reportedly instructed the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) to investigate the official travels undertaken by Nana Akufo-Addo during his presidency.

According to a report by Asaase Radio, government officials have justified the move as part of a broader effort to uphold accountability in the management of state funds. Throughout Akufo-Addo’s tenure, opposition parties and civil society organisations frequently raised concerns over the substantial costs associated with his international trips.

In 2021, North Tongu MP Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa alleged that the former president spent millions of cedis on luxurious chartered flights instead of utilising the state-owned presidential jet. These claims fuelled demands for greater transparency regarding government expenditure on official travel.

The MP alleged that former president Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo had spent a staggering GHS 2.8 million on recent travels to South Africa and France, opting for a private jet instead of the state-owned presidential aircraft.

In a fiery Facebook post, he claimed, “The Airbus ACJ320neo owned by Acropolis Aviation, based in Farnborough, UK, and registered as G-KELT, is the most luxurious and the most expensive in the Acropolis fleet. The manufacturers describe it as ‘the most outstanding ambassador for Airbus Corporate Jets.’

It costs the Ghanaian taxpayer approximately £15,000 an hour when President Akufo-Addo rents it.” The legislator further accused the President of recklessly squandering public funds, stating that he had “blown millions just to satisfy his insatiable appetite for luxury and comfort at the expense of the suffering masses.”

Meanwhile, as of now, the government is yet to issue a formal response to this development.

Parliament passes PPA amendment bill 2025

0

Parliament has passed the Public Procurement Authority Amendment Bill 2025, introducing a key reform that mandates written authorization from the Finance Minister, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, for all government-funded procurements.

The amendment is designed to promote budgetary discipline and curb financial commitments beyond approved allocations.

Explaining the necessity of the reform on the floor of Parliament, Dr. Ato Forson stated: “Mr. Speaker, the object of the Bill is to amend the Public Procurement Act (Act 663) to introduce a requirement for commitment authorization to accompany all government-funded procurement.”

He highlighted concerns over previous procurement practices that have led to financial arrears, saying:

“Mr. Speaker, one of the critical challenges that have contributed to the accumulation of arrears is the practice of awarding contracts without ensuring the availability of funds for payment. To address this, the government, as part of the 2025 Budget measures, has directed that all procurement funded by the central government must be accompanied by written authorization from the Minister responsible for Finance.”

The newly passed legislation is expected to reinforce financial accountability, ensuring that government contracts are backed by available funds before they are awarded.

The Minister of State in charge of Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, has dismissed recent media reports claiming that President John Dramani Mahama has directed the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) to investigate the official travels of former President Nana Akufo-Addo during his tenure.

According to the reports, the alleged directive from the presidency was aimed at ensuring transparency and detecting any possible corruption in the previous government.

However, in a social media post on March 28, 2025, Felix Kwakye Ofosu stated, “For the avoidance of doubt, the Presidency has not given any order to the NIB to look into President Akufo-Addo’s travels.”

Former President Akufo-Addo served a full eight-year term in office before handing over the flagbearership of his party, the New Patriotic Party (NPP), to his Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, who won the party’s presidential primaries but lost the 2024 elections.

Did GRA freeze Richard Armah Quaye’s bank accounts?

0

On March 24, multiple news outlets reported that the accounts of Bills Micro-Credit and Quick Credit and Investment Micro-Credit Founder, Richard Nii Armah Quaye, had been frozen.

However, on March 27, the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) issued a disclaimer, stating that it had not taken any action to freeze Quaye’s accounts.

Despite this clarification, Citi News sources indicate that the freeze was allegedly initiated by the Financial Intelligence Centre (FIC), not the GRA.

This raises further questions, as the GRA’s statement does not directly address whether Quaye’s accounts were frozen by another entity.

According to a confidential letter seen by Citi News the directive to freeze the accounts was issued on March 21, 2025, and took immediate effect in accordance with Section 56(1) of the Anti-Money Laundering Act, 2020 (Act 1044).

This misunderstanding can be traced to a Pulse Ghana article dated 24th March headlined “GRA reportedly freezes billionaire Richard Armah’s bank accounts hours after lavish party” this report was based on a story by the High Street Journal that reported that his accounts were frozen but did not indicate who had initiated the process.

Pulse reported this fact and erroneously attributed this action to the GRA therefore creating the confusion.

The GRA rightly moved to clear the air as they were not involved in the freeze of the accounts, however, the question remains unresolved per the publicly available information.

More than 1,000 containers belonging to ECG have been reported missing, sparking an urgent investigation and a state security operation to identify those responsible.

Series of tariffs announced by U.S. govt may have negative effects on global economy – Bank of Ghana

0

The Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) of the Bank of Ghana (BoG) has noted that the global environment has become more challenging, reflecting trade and economic policy uncertainty.

President Donald Trump on Wednesday, March 26 announced 25% tariffs on all cars shipped to the United States, a significant escalation in a global trade war.

The tariffs, set to take effect on April 3 at 12:01 am ET, are aimed at expanding America’s auto manufacturing prowess. For decades, because of a free trade agreement, automakers have treated Canada, Mexico and the United States as one big country, with no tariffs among them. Although the United States is home to a significant automaking industry, Trump wants to grow it.

“Frankly, friend has been oftentimes much worse than foe. And what we’re going to be doing is a 25% tariff on all cars that are not made in the United States,” Trump told reporters on Wednesday before signing an executive proclamation in the Oval Office. “If they’re made in the United States, it’s absolutely no tariff.”

Speaking during the 123rd MPC press conference in Accra on Friday, March 28, Governor of the BoG Dr Johnson Asiama said that  “The series of tariffs announced by the U.S. administration is evolving and may have negative effects on the global economy.”

He further stated that these developments have already triggered downgrades in Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth forecasts in the two largest economies—U.S. and China—and in turn, global growth. In addition, the disinflation process appears to have stalled in some countries, while financial conditions remain broadly restrictive as central banks slow the pace of monetary policy easing.

“The persistence of these external headwinds may spill over to the domestic economy through the trade and financial channels, highlighting the need for policy to remain proactive,” he said.

On the domestic scene, Dr Johnson Asiama said that prices of Ghana’s major export commodities traded mixed on the international commodities market in early 2025.

He said “Gold prices crossed the US$3,000 per fine ounce on March 14, 2025, on account of heightened economic uncertainty triggered by the trade and geopolitical tensions, persistent inflation, and weakening US dollar.”

In February 2025, he said, gold prices averaged US$2,897.3 per fine ounce, indicating a year-on-year growth of 9.7 percent. Similarly, crude oil prices recorded a marginal annual growth of 2.4 percent to settle at an average price of US$74.95 per barrel.

Cocoa prices, however, declined by 8.5 percent driven by improving supply outlook for the current 2024/25 season, Dr Asiama stated.

In the banking sector, Dr Asiama said that banks’ performance continued to improve.

Total bank assets recorded 34.0 percent growth at the end of February 2025 relative to 12.1 percent growth, in the same period last year, he said.

With regulatory reliefs, the banking industry’s Capital Adequacy Ratio (CAR) was higher at 14.4 percent compared to 13.6 percent in the same period last year, Dr Asiama added.

Read Also: Global inflation is expected to remain high in the near-term – BoG Boss

“Without reliefs, CAR was 12.1 percent. The industry’s Non-Performing Loan (NPL) ratio declined to 22.6 percent in February 2025 from 24.6 percent in February 2024. Excluding the loans in the loss category, which are fully provisioned, the NPL ratio as at end-February 2025 was 8.9 percent,” he said.

Dr Asiama further stated that overall, the Financial Soundness Indicators showed broad improvements in asset growth, solvency, liquidity, efficiency, and profitability.

.The fiscal policy stance was more expansionary than expected in 2024. The 2024 fiscal deficit, on commitment basis, was 7.9 percent of GDP against a target of 3.8 percent of GDP, on the back of higher expenditures than target.

“This notwithstanding, early indications from banking sector data suggest some improvements in fiscal performance in early 2025.

“This, along with the commitment to fiscal consolidation presented in the 2025 budget, should support the fiscal outlook. Also, the ratio of public debt declined supported by the debt restructuring,” he said.

Dr Asiama also said that private sector credit is beginning to show signs of recovery.

In February 2025, he said, private sector credit recorded 26.9 percent annual growth, compared with 5.1 percent in February 2024. In real terms, he added, credit growth was 3.1 percent, compared with a decline of 14.7 percent in February 2024.

Samuel Basintale Amadu

The Comptroller-General of Immigration (CGI), Samuel Basintale Amadu, has recalled 78 personnel from interdiction, reaffirming his commitment to discipline and due process.

The officers are made up of 14 senior officers and 64 other ranks allegedly involved in recruitment and visa scams, and other offenses.

During a meeting with the officers at the National Headquarters, he announced their recall into the Service, emphasising that the recall is not an act of amnesty. Instead, the personnel will undergo internal disciplinary procedures and those found culpable will face the appropriate sanctions.

CGI Amadu stressed that disciplinary issues will no longer be prolonged, highlighting his administration’s dedication to due process and hard work. He urged personnel to respect both superiors and juniors, accentuating the importance of upholding the Service’s dignity.

Notably, he cautioned against repeating past misconduct, warning that disciplinary cases involving fraud, recruitment malpractices, or visa irregularities would be referred to the police for further investigation. For those eligible for promotion, due diligence will be undertaken in the light of the outcome of the trials they will be facing, he added.

These statements mark a pivotal moment in the Service’s journey toward professionalism, accountability, and excellence under his administration. He urged them to maintain good conduct wherever they will be stationed, to uplift the Service’s image and avoid repeating past behaviours.

CGI Amadu was in the company of his deputies: Mr. Laud Affrifah (Operations and Command Posts), Mr. Isaac Owusu Mensah (Finance and Administration), and Assistant Commissioner of Immigration (ACI) Phillip Peter Andoh (Legal, Research and Monitoring), as well as Deputy Commissioner of Immigration, Michael Asare Bediako, Head of Human Resource Department.

Energy Minister must recover stolen ECG containers or be held accountable – Ntim Fordjour

0

Ranking Member of Parliament’s Defence and Interior Committee, Rev. John Ntim Fordjour

Rev John Ntim Fordjour, the Ranking Member on Parliament’s Defence and Interior Committee, has called for the Energy Minister, John Abdulai Jinapor, to be held accountable if he fails to recover the stolen containers belonging to the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) and prosecute those responsible.

In a social media post on Friday, 27th March, he expressed deep concern over the disappearance of 1,328 containers containing ECG equipment and accessories.

He insisted that the Minority in Parliament would not allow the matter to be swept under the carpet.

“From 3,000 to 2,500, now we’re told 1,400 containers of ECG equipment and accessories, imported into the country and paid for, have suddenly obtained wings and flown away. So far, only 40 of the missing containers have been found,” Ntim Fordjour stated.

He emphasised the need for accountability and full recovery of the missing containers, describing the incident as an “unprecedented scandal” involving $700 million.

The legislator further demanded that all those involved be prosecuted, regardless of their political affiliations.

“Crime has no colours, so the NDC must fully account for these containers and purge themselves of this unprecedented scandal. Whoever is culpable must be prosecuted, regardless of their political colours. Stop blaming only the foreign nationals involved in this syndicate.”

“They bought these stolen containers from Ghanaians who are within the Ministry of Energy and ECG. No Indian nor Chinese works at ECG or the Ministry of Energy,” he argued.

Rev Ntim Fordjour also took a swipe at the authorities for their perceived inaction, calling for urgent measures to track down the missing containers. “Is this not the time Commando Jakpa must load his guns and storm the port to track these stolen containers?” he quipped.

He insisted that the Energy Minister must take full responsibility for the scandal, stating, “The Minister for Energy must be held accountable if he fails to bring back the stolen containers and prosecute the culprits.”

President John Dramani Mahama President John Dramani Mahama

President John Dramani Mahama has reminded Ghanaians of the upcoming public holidays on Monday, March 31, 2025, and Tuesday, April 1, 2025, in observance of this year’s Eid-Ul-Fitr celebrations.

“For those of you who need to go to the bank, you should do so in advance because once they close, you won’t have banking access until Wednesday. So, be sure to prepare for the long weekend after work.

His finest hour yet: The Bawumia concession and lessons in leadership

0

What was expected to be his lowest moment in politics ended up becoming a shining example. Mitt Romney once said something about elections and their outcome: “Politics can break your heart”. It was supposed to be a heart-rending moment for Dr Bawumia, but he turned it into a moment of triumph—not just for himself but for his nation, the continent and democracy. Dr Bawumia shocked many in the country and across the world—including some in his own team—when he delivered what has been widely considered one of the earliest concession speeches in Ghanaian, African and global democracy.

In doing so he did not only unofficially signal a denouement to the fierce and hotly contested election between him and his opponent but curtailed what many saw as a potentially volatile situation in the aftermath of the ballot casting process. Considering the all too known history of post-election violence in Africa and across the world, this singular act by Dr Bawumia was roundly commended.

The United Nations called Dr Bawumia’s actions “a significant example for African leaders to prioritise peace over actions that create tension” (UN Secretary General’s special Representative Leonar¬do Santos Simão). The United Nations Resident Coordinator in Ghana, H.E. Charles Abani, visited Dr Bawumia to express his appreciation for his early concession and the concomitant contributions to peace and democracy in Ghana.

The Diplomatic community in Ghana lauded the former Vice President for his statesmanship and respect for democratic values following his early concession. In a letter signed by the Dean of the Diplomatic Corps, the diplomats stated that Dr Bawumia’s unwavering commitment to the values of democracy, especially through your honourable concession in the recent elections, stands as a testament to your statesmanship and love for this nation. In moments of political transition, it is the strength of character and respect for the democratic process that define a leader.”

President John Mahama acknowledged the significance of Dr Bawumia’s actions, stating that they contributed to “fostering peace during a crucial moment for the country.” NDC top official and Director of Communications, Mr. Sammy Gyamfi, called it “an exceptional display of statesmanship”. So, what lessons can we learn from his concession, and what significance does it hold?

It’s okay not to win

“More wins” is the common mantra these days. Of course, as humans, generally, winning is the desired outcome for most endeavours, but the deeper lesson from Dr Bawumia’s actions shows that sometimes you can win by losing. Inasmuch as most of us hope for wins, the lesson here is that failure is part of life. In fact, there would be nothing like victory if there were no failure. And so what Bawumia demonstrates for all of us, especially the youth, is that sometimes, it is okay to fail. It builds resilience, fortitude and emotional intelligence for even greater wins at a mandated time.

Without certain failures, there wouldn’t be victory at all. Yet the fear of failure has crippled many, destroyed lives and prematurely curtailed destinies. By openly, readily and speedily accepting the electoral outcome, Dr Bawumia demonstrated his true character: humble, peaceable, conciliatory, mature and wise. He has shown that there is no shame in failure and that out of the shrubs and ashes of defeat, beauty can emerge.

Democratic Advancement

Everywhere you turned, nationally and internationally, one of the biggest conversations was about how Dr Bawumia’s early concession entrenched and enhanced democracy in Africa. With the albatross of post-election conflict ravaging certain nations and the sword of Damocles hovering heavily in the air, Dr Bawumia’s gestures pre-empted any unforeseen calamities and calmed the atmosphere. Still, the unprecedented cacophony and violence that surrounded the declaration of parliamentary results brought many to the realization of how ominous things may have turned. And perhaps dented Ghana’s democratic image as a haven of peace and stability.

The smooth presidential transition accelerated by a swift and unequivocal concession was therefore roundly applauded. The Nigerian media and blogosphere, for instance, couldn’t have enough of it. All over the Internet, especially on social media, content after content, video after video, text after text, rushed to commend Ghana for flying the flag of Africa high, often comparing it to their situation. This was undoubtedly a Ghanaian moment. However it was also a genuine celebration of democracy, national pride and continental glory.

Ethical Leadership

It is often said that the truest test of a man’s character is what he does when he’s down. Martin Luther King once said: “The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy.” According to Mihelic, Lipicnik, and Metka Tekavcic (2010), “Ethical leaders think about long-term consequences, drawbacks and benefits of the decisions they make in the organization.

They are humble, concerned for the greater good, strive for fairness, take responsibility and show respect for each individual.” These are all leadership lessons we can learn from. They are qualities that we can infer from the action Dr Bawumia took: thinking about the greater good of the nation, shunning long-drawn litigation, and showing humility and respect for the electoral process. In doing this, he has won the respect of many across the globe, including those who didn’t necessarily vote for him. He has established himself as a leader with integrity.

Data, technology and the future

One of the major themes that dominated the conversation after Dr Bawumia’s concession was the speed and precision with which it was done, underpinned by data, technology and projections. It shows that to succeed in the contemporary era, the ability to curate, mine and make projections based on accurate data is the way to go. The days of haphazard, erratic, wishy washy, propagandists and spurious assertions are over. It demonstrates that democracy does not happen in a vacuum but rather is essentialized through concrete, substantive data visualisations, technological input and intelligent analytics. This is the future of campaigns, policy making and democracy.

Conclusion

Dr Bawumia may have lost the presidency, but what he has gained because of his swift, decisive and full-throated concession is priceless. He put the national interest above personal ambition and in doing so, demonstrated a powerful model of exemplary, principled, humane, and courageous leadership that will inspire generations to come.

Private health facilities lament over unpaid GHS150m arrears

0

The Private Health Facilities Association of Ghana has lamented the government’s failure to settle unpaid arrears of over 150 million cedis owed them since the beginning of the year 2025.

This comes on the back of harassment from the Ghana Revenue Authority and the Electricity Company of Ghana over their members’ inability to pay utility debt owed them. The association has attributed this failure to the National Health Insurance Authority’s failure to regulate Private Insurance companies, resulting in arrears owed to its members.

In an interview with Citi News on Friday, March 28, the General Secretary of the Association, Richard Frank-Torblu, emphasized that the association will not relent until the almost 200 million debt owed its members is paid.

“We have a lot of outstanding monies which haven’t been paid over the period since the beginning of this year, and the private health care providers across the country are in a serious situation. GRA has started attacking most of our facilities and taking a good number of our people to court, demanding their SSNIT contribution.

“ECG has also disconnected some of our facilities. We are struggling to provide quality healthcare service to Ghanaians. We are looking at about 150 million to 200 million cedis which hasn’t been paid to our members across the country.

“We have had a series of conversations with the leadership of NHIA, but they haven’t been forthcoming. The only time we will be comfortable is if these monies are paid,”he lamented.

Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti facing four-year prison sentence over tax evasion allegations

Real Madrid manager, Carlo Ancelotti Real Madrid manager, Carlo Ancelotti

Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti is facing a possible four-year prison sentence as he prepares to stand trial over tax evasion allegations.

The Italian coach is accused of deliberately misinforming the tax authorities during his first spell with the Spanish club between 2014 and 2015, allegedly avoiding the payment of more than 1 million euros in income tax.

However, Ancelotti has denied any wrongdoing and pledged to contest the charges, despite previously admitting to underpaying taxes, an issue he attributed to errors made by his accountants.

The court has scheduled the trial for April 2, 2025, to determine the coach’s fate regarding the allegations.

Speaking ahead of Real Madrid’s La Liga match against Leganés on March 28, 2025, Ancelotti stated that he is prepared to testify in court and remains hopeful of being exonerated.

“Alleged tax fraud? I have to go and testify next week. This is not the place to debate this. What’s happening next week is an appeal by the Prosecutor’s Office because there has already been a first trial that I won,” he said.

Meanwhile, prosecutors have called for Ancelotti to be sentenced to four years in prison if found guilty of the charges.

The trial will take place just six days before Real Madrid travel to the Emirates Stadium to face Arsenal in the first leg of their Champions League quarterfinal on April 8, 2025.

CLOGSAG suspends nationwide strike

0

The Civil and Local Government Staff Association, Ghana (CLOGSAG), has suspended its prolonged nationwide strike following a decision by its National Executive Council (NEC) at an emergency meeting on March 28, 2025.

In a statement issued by Executive Secretary Isaac Bampoe Addo, CLOGSAG explained that the suspension would allow for continued engagements to resolve the impasse.

In this regard, CLOGSAG entreats staff of the Civil Service and the Local Government Service to resume work on Wednesday, 2nd April 2025,” the statement read.

CLOGSAG began the strike on February 20, protesting the appointment of Samuel Adom Botchway as the Births and Deaths Registrar.

The group demanded that the position be filled by a civil servant, citing concerns over Botchway’s alleged political affiliation with the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC).

The association argued that appointing a politically affiliated individual compromised civil service neutrality and undermined professionalism in the public sector.

The Office of the President has directed the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) to investigate the official travels of former President, Nana Akufo-Addo during his time in office.

The directive comes amid increasing public debate on governance transparency and the prudent use of state resources.

The probe has been described as “a new low,” a source told Accra-based Asaase Radio, hinting at possible political motives behind the directive.

However, officials insist it aligns with efforts to scrutinize public spending and uphold financial accountability.

It remains unclear whether the investigation will cover all of Akufo-Addo’s official travels during his tenure or focus on specific trips.

Powerful quakes kill at least 144 in Myanmar, many still trapped

0

Bangkok, Mar. 28, (dpa/GNA) – At least 144 people have been killed and more than 700 are injured in Myanmar after powerful earthquakes struck South-East Asia on Friday, the country’s military leadership said on state television.

Tremors from the quakes were also felt in several neighbouring countries, including Thailand, where images shared online showed workers fleeing as a high-rise building under construction collapsed.

Thai officials reported three deaths and 68 injuries, while media reports said dozens of workers remained missing hours after the quakes.

The United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported that a 7.7-magnitude earthquake hit at around 12:50 pm (0620 GMT). Readings from other services have varied.

USGS said the epicentre was about 16 kilometres from the city of Sagaing in north-western Myanmar. A few minutes later, the USGS registered another earthquake a little to the south with a magnitude of 6.4.

Myanmar junta declares state of emergency

In Myanmar, media reports citing rescue workers and witnesses said that buildings have collapsed, trapping people beneath the rubble.

A rescue worker told dpa that hospitals in Mandalay, a city near the epicentre, were overwhelmed by the number of injured.

He reported scenes of chaos and that there were too few volunteers to help free the number of people trapped beneath the debris.

Getting information from the situation in Myanmar has been difficult as the country has been in political turmoil since a military junta seized power in a 2021 coup.

Millions of people have been displaced by the ongoing fighting.

Military junta leader Min Aung Hlaing announced on television that he had requested assistance from the international community and various organizations.

He added that India and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) have been authorized to support volunteer efforts in the affected regions.

The military junta has also declared a state of emergency in several parts of Myanmar. A spokesman for the junta said hospitals are in urgent need of blood supplies.

Red Cross reports devastating damage

The Red Cross in Myanmar has reported devastating damage and has spoken to staff in the affected region, according to Marie Manrique, the organization’s programme manager on the ground.

There is great concern that dams on the Irrawaddy River may have been damaged and could break. Manrique said that 18.5 million people live in the affected area near the city of Sagaing.

According to the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), around 1.6 million of the 3.5 million people displaced in Myanmar live in the region hit by the earthquake.

“We are very concerned about the possible humanitarian consequences,” said Manrique. “We expect a lot of people to be injured.”

Tremors felt in Thailand and neighbouring regions

The quake also rattled Thailand’s capital Bangkok, where the earth shook for several minutes and people left their homes in panic, according to a dpa reporter. Sirens could be heard hours after the quake struck.

In the Silom district in the centre of the capital, thousands of people were on the streets, many running.

Volunteers were immediately deployed, instructing people to get out into the open and leave the buildings. Patients were brought out of the hospitals onto the streets.

The shell of a high-rise building in Bangkok collapsed, as shown in videos circulating online.

Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra convened an emergency meeting during her visit to Phuket Island.

Earthquake felt in Vietnam, India, China, Bangladesh

The tremors were also felt in Vietnam’s capital Hanoi, as well as in parts of India, China and Bangladesh.

In China, tremors were reported in Yunnan province, where damage and injuries were confirmed.

In India’s Manipur state and Bangladesh’s capital Dhaka, the quake caused panic, but no damage was initially reported.

India has offered to help earthquake victims in Myanmar and Thailand.

“India stands ready to offer all possible assistance,” Modi wrote on X. He said he has asked “our authorities to be on standby.”

Asia is regularly affected by earthquakes, which sometimes kill thousands of people and cause devastating destruction.

An earthquake off the eastern coast of Japan in March 2011 claimed almost 16,000 lives and caused the accident at the Fukushima nuclear plant.

More recently, Afghanistan, Indonesia and Nepal have experienced disasters with thousands of deaths.

EU offers satellite help

Commenting on X, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said the scenes from Myanmar and Thailand are “heartbreaking.”

The European Union’s Copernicus satellites “are already helping first responders,” she wrote and added that the EU is “ready to provide more support.”

Copernicus is the EU’s space observation programme. It has an open source policy in line with international data sharing principles, its website states, and can provide detailed maps of affected areas.

Speaking at the closing ceremony held at Airport Terminal 2 Extension, the Regional Commander of GIS at KIA, DCOI Edith Penelope Arhin said apart from enhancing service delivery, the training will also strengthen cross-cultural understanding between Ghana and China given the growing global influence of China not only in trade and investment, but also in the increasing number of Chinese travellers arriving in Ghana for business and tourism.

The Regional Commander further encouraged participants not to see the training as the end of their language journey but as the beginning, because proficiency in language comes with practice, consistency and a willingness to continue learning.

DCOI Arhin further thanked the Chinese Embassy and Confucius Institute at the University of Ghana for the support, while urging them to integrate these skills into their daily interactions at work and home.

Asene Akroso Manso MP demands accountability over missing ECG containers

Member of Parliament for Asene Akroso Manso Constituency, George Kwame Aboagye Member of Parliament for Asene Akroso Manso Constituency, George Kwame Aboagye

The Member of Parliament for Asene Akroso Manso Constituency, George Kwame Aboagye, has raised concerns over the disappearance of 1,328 containers belonging to the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) at the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA).

In a statement delivered on the floor of Parliament on Friday, March 28, 2025, the MP described the situation as a major regulatory and security concern, calling for urgent action to address what he sees as a failure of accountability and oversight at the nation’s ports.

Citing an investigative report chaired by Prof. Innocent Senyo Acquah, Kwame Aboagye noted that out of 2,491 uncleared ECG containers at the ports, a staggering 1,328 remain unaccounted for.

He emphasized that this lapse highlights inefficiencies among key agencies responsible for port operations, including the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), the Ports Authority, shipping lines, freight forwarders, and national security and customs officers.

“This indicates that all the security departments and government agencies responsible for efficient operations and accountability at the port are not functioning effectively,” he stated.

The MP outlined the multi-step process of clearing goods at Ghana’s ports, noting that it involves proper documentation, payment of duties, customs inspections, and the physical release of goods.

While designed to ensure compliance with import regulations, he argued that the complexity of the process may be exploited if oversight is lax.

To address the issue, Kwame Aboagye proposed a series of immediate and long-term measures.

He called for a comprehensive investigation involving port authorities, ECG officials, and law enforcement to trace the missing containers and determine whether they were stolen, tampered with, or misplaced.

“If the investigation uncovers negligence, fraud, or criminal activity, responsible parties—whether individuals within ECG, port officials, or businesses—must be held accountable,” he insisted.

Among his recommendations, the MP advocated for stricter penalties for theft or tampering with containers to serve as a deterrent, as well as enhanced collaboration between the ports and police to combat any criminal elements involved. He also urged the adoption of stronger internal controls and improved security measures to prevent future losses.

In conclusion, Kwame Aboagye urged the Speaker of Parliament to establish an ad hoc committee to thoroughly investigate the matter and provide recommendations to prevent a recurrence.

“The issue of missing ECG containers at the ports is a serious one that requires both immediate action and long-term structural changes,” he said.

“A combination of better security, stronger internal controls, collaboration with law enforcement, and greater transparency can go a long way in addressing the root causes of the problem,” he added.

In response to the MP’s statement and the call for an ad hoc committee, the Minister of Energy and Green Transition, John Jinapor, insisted that his ministry, based on the Prof. Acquah Committee report, is already taking steps to prevent such illegal activities and ensure the perpetrators are brought to justice.

“This is a House of records, so I am being very cautious. I’ve received numerous briefings and am beginning to identify those behind this. This has been happening for years, but I will put a stop to it immediately.

“And, Mr. Speaker, it will not only stop; we will retrieve the missing containers and materials, prosecute the perpetrators, and recover the lost funds,” he declared.

Emmanuel Selby briefs Columbia University students during an ICPS factory tour Emmanuel Selby briefs Columbia University students during an ICPS factory tour

A delegation of MBA students from Columbia University recently visited Intelligent Card Production Systems (ICPS), the secure card manufacturing arm of Margins ID Group, to witness firsthand the cutting-edge advancements in digital identity and secure card production.

As a frontrunner in digital transformation, Margins ID Group provided the students with an in-depth look at the intricate processes and stringent security measures that define the industry.

For the students, the visit was more than an academic excursion, it was an immersive experience highlighting Ghana’s role in leveraging digital identity to enhance governance, financial inclusion, and national security.

ICPS, a subsidiary of Margins ID Group, plays a pivotal role in this transformation by producing high-security smart cards, including the Ghana Card, a cornerstone of the country’s digital ecosystem.

“We’ve heard about the impressive work being done here in Ghana, delivering high-security solutions and setting the pace for digitization across the African continent. Seeing firsthand how this facility integrates technology with governance is truly remarkable,” said Bruce Kogut, Ph.D., a professor at Columbia Business School who led the delegation.

Maria Hamwi, an MBA student on the trip, was particularly struck by ICPS’s efforts to reduce fraud and enhance identity verification.

“We have visited several companies, but what’s happening here at ICPS is different,” she noted.

“It’s not just about business; it’s about national transformation. Your innovative story must be heard by the world.”

During their tour, the students explored Margins ID Group’s involvement in Ghana’s National ID Project through its subsidiaries.

MIDSA, the Group’s technology arm, provides the advanced software solutions and biometric verification technology that power the Ghana Card, while IMS, under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) agreement with the National Identification Authority (NIA), conceptualized, designed, and built the country’s National ID infrastructure.

Emmanuel Selby, Executive Director of Technology at Margins ID Group, reaffirmed the company’s commitment to shaping Africa’s digital future.

“Margins ID Group is dedicated to collaborating with industry leaders to develop secure, scalable solutions for Ghanaians,” Selby stated.

“As the identity landscape evolves, we remain focused on leveraging technology to drive efficiency in governance and service delivery, not just for Ghana, but for Africa and the world.”

Mohammed Salah when he surprised a community girls football club Mohammed Salah when he surprised a community girls football club

Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah paid a surprise visit to a community girls’ football club in Liverpool. The forward has been in incredible form, leading the charge as Liverpool aims to clinch the Premier League title.

Salah’s appearance was part of Adidas’ ‘You Got This’ campaign at the Tiber Football Centre, which aimed to spotlight the ‘Sideline Effect’—the influence of both positive and negative support from the sidelines.

The Egyptian star took time to offer guidance and words of encouragement to the girls during their shooting practice.

Explaining the purpose of his visit, Salah emphasised the importance of encouragement and positive reinforcement in sports.

“With any game of football, there is pressure to perform for your teammates, coach, fans, and yourself, which is why it’s so important to have someone who believes in you.

“Encouragement is the key to unlocking potential. Support can come in many forms, and sometimes what may seem like a helpful gesture can, in fact, be the opposite. So, it’s great to see Adidas creating something so useful with their ‘Sidelines Essentials.’ No matter the sport or the level, we all need positive support,” he said.

The girls also took turns introducing themselves to the Egyptian superstar, sparking intense jubilation.

Currently, Salah leads the Premier League goal-scoring chart, having scored 27 goals in 29 appearances while also registering the most assists, with 17.

Afenyo-Markin alleges ECG, Customs collusion in missing containers scandal

0

Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has alleged that officials of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) and Customs Officers connived in the sale of missing containers of cables at the port.

Speaking on the floor of Parliament on Friday, March 28, Afenyo-Markin questioned how the containers vanished despite bureaucratic processes at the port.

“How come containers at the port that have arrived, the bureaucracy at our ports, they said the containers are missing? Mr. Speaker, it is true that when these containers come, there’s some connivance with some customs officials. And they sell these containers of cables that ECG needs after the supplier has been paid.”

He further alleged that the cables are resold to ECG, urging lawmakers to focus on addressing the issue rather than politicizing it.

“They sell the containers, and people resell to ECG. Are we pretending we don’t know? Instead of us paying attention to it and killing the rot, then we come here and then NPP, NDC, maybe it happened under NPP, it happened under NDC. No.”

Afenyo-Markin assured the Energy Minister of the Minority’s support in tackling the issue.

“Hon. Energy Minister [John Jinapor], I know what you can do if we can give you support to do it. You must adopt a non-partisan posture and tackle the rot. But if we all want to approach it NPP, NDC, then Mr. Speaker, it will remain.”

His remarks follow the retrieval of some missing containers.

Meanwhile, Minister of Energy and Green Transition, John Jinapor, has announced a reduction in ECG’s budget from GH₵500 million to GH₵250 million to help clear debts owed to power producers.

Jinapor disclosed that ECG was allocated GH₵935 million in 2023 for planned procurement but exceeded its budget by GH₵7.3 billion, mainly on cables.

To address the crisis, he outlined key measures in Parliament.

“We have reduced their budget from GH₵500 million to GH₵250 million. Because we must pay the power producers. Today, the bill is over GH₵80 billion in the energy sector. If we don’t do something, this sector will collapse. As a minister, I am determined to do my bid no matter how difficult it is,” he stated.

This is how much gov’t needs to settle customers of defunct fund management firms

0

The Director General of the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), Dr. James Klutse Avedzi, has revealed that the government requires GH₵4.3 billion to fully settle outstanding claims of customers of defunct fund management firms.

According to him, this is the remaining amount needed after the government disbursed GH₵5 billion to compensate some affected customers.

Dr. Avedzi made this disclosure on PM Express Business Edition with host George Wiafe on March 27, 2025.

He explained that delays in settling claims were partly due to legal challenges from some fund management firms, including Blackshield Capital, which contested their liquidation process in court.

Beneficiaries

Dr. Avedzi further revealed that out of 108,000 investors identified during the audit, 80,000 have so far received full payments. He assured that the government is working to clear the remaining claims.

Background

In 2019, the SEC revoked the licenses of 53 fund management firms as part of efforts to safeguard the integrity of the securities market and protect investors.

Some of the affected firms included All Time Capital Limited, Apex Capital Partners, Axe Capital Limited (formerly United Asset Management), Intermarket Asset Management Limited (formerly CDH Asset Management), and Blackshield Capital Management (formerly Gold Coast Fund Management).

According to the SEC, these firms collectively managed at least 56,000 investors and held a combined asset base of GH₵8 billion.

Bailout for Investors

In 2024, the government announced a GH₵1.5 billion bailout for investors of the collapsed fund management firms. Under this arrangement, affected investors received either GH₵50,000 or 15% of their outstanding claims.

This partial bailout covered clients of all affected firms, including customers of Blackshield Fund Management. It resulted in 89% of individual investors and 82% of pensioners being fully compensated.

Additionally, GH₵700 million was disbursed through GCB Capital to facilitate payments to investors.

Status of Bailout Payment

Dr. Avedzi noted that while the 2025 Budget did not include provisions for the remaining payments, he remains hopeful that funds could be secured during the Mid-Year Budget Review.

“The government is committed to settling these payments due to their impact on market confidence,” he assured.

He also warned that SEC would take decisive action against any fund management company that fails to comply with market regulations.

“We don’t want a repeat of the circumstances that led to the liquidation of some fund management firms,” he emphasized.

Hajj Village will serve as a transit facility for all passengers

President John Dramani Mahama President John Dramani Mahama

President John Dramani Mahama has stated that the Hajj Village, currently under construction, will not be exclusively for pilgrims traveling to Mecca but will also serve as a transit facility for passengers passing through Kotoka International Airport.

While addressing the Muslim community during the breaking of the fast on Thursday, March 28, 2025, he reiterated that the facility would provide a more convenient and comfortable airport experience for passengers.

“The facility aligns with our broader goal of ensuring fairness in national policies and making sure that all citizens, regardless of their financial status, can fulfill their spiritual obligations. For years, Ghanaian pilgrims have endured harsh accommodation conditions and physical difficulties before embarking on their holy journey.

“Under the Reset Agenda, the Ghana Airport Company is constructing a transit terminal that will function as a Hajj Village during the Hajj period and as a comfortable transit center for departing passengers. After the Hajj period, the facility will remain available for other passengers in transit through Kotoka International Airport,” he stated.

On Friday, February 28, 2025, President Mahama broke ground for the construction of a permanent Hajj Village in the country.

Fatau Dauda lauds Black Stars goalkeepers after ‘amazing’ outing in 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers

0

L-R: Jojo Wollacott, Benjamin Asare, Fatau Dauda and Lawrence Ati-Zigi L-R: Jojo Wollacott, Benjamin Asare, Fatau Dauda and Lawrence Ati-Zigi

Black Stars goalkeepers’ trainer, Fatau Dauda, has praised all three goalkeepers called up for the 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Chad and Madagascar in March 2025.

Dauda took to X (formerly Twitter) to commend the trio, Benjamin Asare, Lawrence Ati-Zigi, and Jojo Wollacott, for their unity and commitment to the team.

“You guys were amazing in supporting each other. Keep it up, and let’s move forward… I wish you all the best in your remaining games this season,” Dauda wrote.

The Black Stars’ goalkeeping department became a major talking point after Hearts of Oak’s Benjamin Asare overtook regulars Ati-Zigi and Wollacott to start in both matches against Chad and Madagascar.

Dauda’s message suggests that despite Asare leapfrogging the other two, all the goalkeepers remain focused and committed to the team’s success.

Asare kept two clean sheets in Ghana’s dominant victories, as the Black Stars thrashed Chad 5-0 before defeating Madagascar 3-0.

Following his impressive performances, head coach Otto Addo has officially named Asare as the team’s first-choice goalkeeper.
