List of Government Contracts Awarded to Akufo-Addo’s Daughters During His Presidency

0

Multiple credible reports have linked President Nana Akufo-Addo’s daughters — Gyankroma Akufo-Addo and Edwina Akufo-Addo — to several high-value government contracts and business ventures between 2017 and 2025. These revelations have sparked widespread concern about nepotism, conflict of interest, and abuse of power at the highest levels of government.

Below is a detailed overview of the major contracts and allegations:

1. Ambulance Spare Parts Contract – $34.9 Million

Gyankroma Akufo-Addo and her associate, Stephen Okoro, are listed as directors of Service Ghana Auto Group Limited. This company was controversially awarded a $34.9 million contract to supply spare parts for ambulances. The deal was allegedly approved under suspicious circumstances by former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta shortly before his exit from office. Critics argue that the amount spent could have been used to procure entirely new ambulances.

2. Painting Interchanges – $25 Million

Under her role in the creative arts sector, Gyankroma reportedly secured a $25 million contract to oversee the beautification of Accra’s interchanges with murals and art installations. The project, although defended as a cultural initiative, was widely criticized due to the scale of funding involved during a period of economic strain in the country.

3. Registration of 42 Companies

MP Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa disclosed that Akufo-Addo’s daughters and their close associates established 42 companies between 2017 and 2024. Many of these companies reportedly benefitted from sole-sourced government contracts across various sectors, including:

Cannabis farming (e.g. Good Grow Limited registered shortly after cannabis was legalized in Ghana)

Mining

Microfinance

Agro-processing

The sheer number of companies and their strategic focus areas have raised suspicions of insider advantage and privileged access to government opportunities.

4. Inflated Ambulance Procurement – $29.7 Million Excess

Ablakwa also revealed that the same group was linked to the inflated procurement of 307 ambulances, where the state paid $54.3 million for a deal that independent assessments valued at just $24.6 million — an excess of nearly $30 million. The Auditor-General confirmed concerns of inflated pricing and improper procurement procedures.

Public Reaction and Calls for Accountability

These allegations have generated national outrage, with calls from opposition parties, civil society groups, and anti-corruption advocates for a forensic audit of all contracts awarded during the Akufo-Addo administration. Many Ghanaians are demanding that the Office of the Special Prosecutor investigate these claims thoroughly and prosecute any wrongdoing.

Alice Walton is world’s richest woman 2025

0

For the first time in five years, there’s a new richest woman on Forbes’ annual World’s Billionaires list. With an estimated $101 billion fortune,

Alice Walton has taken back the title from L’Oréal heiress Francoise Bettencourt Meyers of France, who had claimed the crown since the 2021 list and who now ranks as the world’s second-richest woman (estimated net worth: $81.6 billion).

The only daughter of Walmart founder Sam Walton (d. 1992), Alice Walton is $28.7 billion richer than last year, thanks to a 40 per cent increase in the value of her estimated 11 per cent stake in the retail giant, which saw shoppers flock to its “Every Day Low Prices” amid high inflation.

Bettencourt Meyers, on the other hand, is $17.9 billion poorer, after those same market forces helped send shares of the cosmetics conglomerate her grandfather Eugène Schueller (d. 1957) founded spiraling by nearly 20 per cent.

Walton, 75, is one of 15 members of the $100 Billion Club—those with fortunes spanning 12 digits—this year. She’s the second woman to ever reach centibillionaire status, following Bettencourt Meyers, 71, who accomplished the feat in June 2024.

Walton ranks as the 15th richest person in the world, a few spots behind her brothers Rob Walton, 80, and Jim Walton, 76, who are worth $110 billion and $109 billion, respectively.

After graduating from Trinity University in Texas in 1971, Alice Walton worked briefly as a buyer of children’s clothes at Walmart, before taking a job in New Orleans as a stockbroker for E.F. Hutton.

She returned to her family’s hometown of Bentonville, Arkansas during the 1980s to run investment operations at the Waltons’ Arvest Bank, before launching a lending and brokerage shop of her own called Llama with $19.5 million of family money. When Llama shut down in 1998, Walton moved back to Texas and shifted her focus to curating art.

She chaired the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art in Bentonville for a decade, before handing the reins to her nephew Tom Walton’s wife, Olivia Walton, in 2021. Alice is credited with founding the museum, which sits on 120 acres and features works by the likes of Andy Warhol and Georgia O’Keeffe, after realizing there wasn’t anything like it within 300 miles of her family’s hometown. Nearly all of the $1.6 billion it cost to open the facility in 2011 came from trusts in the names of her late brother John Walton and mother Helen Walton (d. 2007).

Alice Walton has ramped up her own philanthropy over the past decade, however, pouring more than $5.8 billion into five family charitable foundations that have doled out an estimated $1.7 billion of her funds to date. That includes an estimated $400 million gifted through the Walton Family Foundation (which her parents founded on Walmart’s 25th anniversary in 1987) to organizations focused on education reform, the environment and the region surrounding Bentonville.

It also includes more than $500 million that Alice’s Art Bridges Foundation has spent acquiring and loaning out works of American art to more than 230 museums across the country—including the Art Institute of Chicago, the MoMA in New York City and the Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery in Washington, D.C.—since its founding in 2016.

Last August, Walton’s Art Bridges Foundation reported that it had gifted another $249 million to help fund a new Alice L. Walton School of Medicine in Bentonville that will “enhance traditional medical education with the arts, humanities, and whole health principles.” The school is set to enroll its first class of 48 students in July.

“I want to create opportunities that help people and communities achieve their dreams,” says Walton, in a quote posted to her namesake foundation’s website. “It is the joy of my life, and a privilege to do so.”

Dr Micheal Boadi Nyamekye, General Overseer of the Makers House Chapel International, has said that while prayer is essential, it shouldn’t interfere with work hours.

He emphasized, however, that work-life balance for Christians is important to boost productivity.

His comments were captured in a video clip shared on X by Joy FM.

“You can’t use productive working hours to pray,” he indicated.

Drawing a clear line between spiritual duties and professional responsibilities, Dr Nyamekye stated that if a person is employed, it is expected of them to fulfil their work obligations during working hours.

He added that if he found anyone using working hours to pray, he would fire such a person.

“I will fire you if you leave the office during work hours to go and pray,” he stated.

However, he clarified that this doesn’t mean he’s opposed to prayer; rather, he believes in prioritising tasks and maintaining a healthy balance between work and spiritual life.

Dr Nyamekye encouraged Christians to be diligent and responsible in their professional lives while still nurturing their spiritual growth.

Black Stars must qualify for 2026 World Cup to continue Gyan, Appiah’s legacy – Mohammed Polo

Black Stars legend, Mohammed Polo Black Stars legend, Mohammed Polo

Legendary Ghanaian player Mohammed Polo has said that it is incumbent on the Black Stars players to do their best to qualify for the 2026 World Cup.

He stated that former players like Asamoah Gyan and Stephen Appiah took Ghana to the World Cup on different occasions in 2006, 2010, and 2014 during their time, which ought to be safeguarded by the current team.

The former Accra Hearts of Oak player asserted that the Black Stars’ qualification for the 2026 World Cup will make up for their disappointing performances in the 2026 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers.

“I think the younger ones now have to know that their predecessors have left a legacy that they have to take over. Appiah and Gyan left the team without winning the AFCON, but they qualified for the World Cup several times. So, they have to do everything possible to qualify.

“There’s no way they should lose; they shouldn’t be missing out. We don’t want to see a repeat of the AFCON issue; it should not happen. So, they have to come together, understand each other, and play for Ghana and themselves,” he told JoyNews.

In the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, the Black Stars defeated Chad 5-0 on March 21, 2025, at the Accra Sports Stadium and secured a comfortable 3-0 win over Madagascar on March 25, 2025.

After six matches played, Ghana lead Group I with 15 points, followed by Comoros with 12 points, while Madagascar lie in third position with 10 points.

“For us, it is a compelling opportunity to implement a system that helps MSMEs thrive,” he added.

According to him, ‘She Business’ builds on the successes of EMERGE, Absa’s programme tailored for women-led enterprises, which has disbursed over GH¢800 million in funding.

Lack of infrastructure impeding enrolment of more medical students at KNUST

0

By Florence Afriyie Mensah

Kumasi, April 4, GNA – Inadequate lecture theatres, seminar rooms and laboratories at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH), is impeding the enrolment of more medical students at the School of Medical Sciences (SMS) of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) in Kumasi.

Professor Akwasi Antwi-Kusi, Dean of KNUST-SMS, who stated this, said the School had the potential of admitting more students, but the lack of adequate teaching and learning infrastructure, such as lecture theatres and seminar rooms at KATH was hindering the plans.

The School, this year alone, shortlisted some 1,040 applicants with aggregate six (6) to eight (8) for interview to be admitted, but were able to admit only 240 of them, denying almost 800 brilliant students the opportunity to read medicine at the KNUST.

Speaking at the 50th Anniversary of the KNUST-SMS in Kumasi, he pointed out that, after five decades, the School was yet to have its own office accommodation for lecturers at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital.

“Again, even though our combined class of the medical and dental students stands at 320, our classrooms at KATH can only accommodate 120 students.

Our clinical students, therefore, shuttle between the University and the KATH for lectures and examinations, a distance of 15 kilometres.

Aside from the wear and tear and huge transport running cost, the effect on the students and their clinical work cannot be quantified” Prof Antwi-Danso bemoaned.

He said the alumni of the school were embarking on a legacy project to construct a 400 capacity multi-purpose lecture theatre at KATH.

The project estimated at GH₵50,000,000.00 will have offices, seminar rooms, students’ clinic and a canteen among others, to enhance learning and research ensuring that medical professionals were equipped to meet the evolving needs of the healthcare system, including equitable distribution of doctors across Ghana.

Prof Antwi-Danso used the occasion to call on stakeholders to generously contribute towards the project, while urging corporate organizations to invest in medical education as part of their corporate social responsibilities.

On other matters affecting delivery of quality service, he called on the government to review the fees for medical education and give special loans to medical students.

He explained that underfunding had been one the greatest challenges since medical education was expensive.

According to him, in the United States of America, average medical school tuition was $60,000 a year, while in Ghana it was only GH₵10,000.00 leaving medical schools underfunded in Ghana affecting infrastructure, equipment, faculty salaries and resources.

The Anniversary is being held on the theme: “A Glance at the Past, A Glimpse into the Future.”

Work to dismantle ‘Tinka’ immediately – Interior Minister directs Ashanti Police Command

0

By Muyid Deen Suleman

Kumasi April 4, GNA – Alhaji Muntaka Mubarak, Minister for the Interior, has given the Ashanti Regional Police Command a six-month ultimatum to dismantle ‘Tinka’, a notorious drug den within Alabar area in the Kumasi metropolis.

The notorious drug den in the centre of the city is also the base for trading in stolen items such as mobile phones, laptops and other valuable gadgets as well as the home of drug addicts and other various criminal activities.

The area had over the years posed a serious threat to residents and traders, but the security agencies had made little or no efforts to uproot the various criminal gangs from the area.

Speaking during a meeting with police officers at the Ashanti Regional Police Command, Alhaji Muntaka pointed out that, dismantling the notorious criminal den would ensure the safety of residents, visitors and traders in the Kumasi metropolis.

The prevalence of drug trafficking and abuse has emerged as a pressing concern in Ghana, paralleling the destructive impacts of illegal mining, commonly referred to as “Galamsey.”

The Interior Minister underscored the need for a comprehensive approach to combatting these vices, emphasizing the vital role of law enforcement in maintaining public order and safety.

He pledged to provide the necessary resources and support to enable the police to effectively carry out their responsibilities in tackling drug-related crimes.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) Mr Emmanuel Teye Cudjoe, Ashanti Regional Police Commander, echoed the Minister’s sentiments, and assured him of the police force’s commitment to diligently address the issue of ‘Tinka’.

The collaborative efforts between the government and law enforcement agencies signify a united front against the proliferation of drugs and criminal activities in the region.

By enhancing enforcement measures and enhancing community engagement, the authorities aim to stem the tide of drug trafficking and protect the welfare of the populace.

The resolve to combat these challenges reflects a shared commitment to upholding the rule of law and safeguarding the nation’s security.

28% BoG Policy Rate: Majority Of MPC Members Vote For Hike

0

Dr. Johnson Asiama

Three out of five members of the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) of the Bank of Ghana (BoG) voted to increase the policy rate by 100 basis points, raising it from 27% to 28%, citing concerns over rising inflation.

According to the central bank, the publication of the Monetary Policy Decision Statement is a significant step toward enhancing its monetary policy formulation process, anchored on the Inflation Targeting (IT) Framework, which began nearly two decades ago.

The BoG stated that publishing the MPC members’ decisions marks a shift from consensus-based decision-making on monetary policy rate positioning to a majority-vote process, aligning with practices of other major central banks under inflation targeting frameworks.

The first edition of this publication, covering the 123rd MPC meetings held from March 24 to March 26, 2025, provided the public with insights into the deliberations and voting patterns of the members. The majority voted for a 100 basis point hike, reinforcing the Bank’s commitment to ensuring price stability.

Policy Rate Decision

Member 1

Member 1 argued that increasing the policy rate, combined with the Bank’s efficient liquidity management and ongoing fiscal consolidation efforts, would strongly support the disinflation process.

“On price developments, headline inflation declined in the first two months of 2025, although it remains significantly above target, driven largely by decreasing non-food inflation,” the member noted.

Member 2

Member 2 supported an upward adjustment in the policy rate, emphasizing the need for stronger Open Market Operations and continued fiscal consolidation efforts to help achieve the Bank’s inflation targets.

“An upward adjustment in the policy rate, along with stronger Open Market Operations and robust fiscal consolidation, should help deliver the Bank’s inflation objective,” the member stated, justifying their vote for a 100 basis point increase.

Member 3

Member 3 took a more cautious approach, stating that economic activity is projected to remain steady in the forecast period due to fiscal stimulus and positive expectations in the real sector.

“Staying put for longer will provide a more stable path to a sustained decline in inflation toward the medium-term target,” the member argued.

This member voted to maintain the policy rate at 27%, reasoning that it would be prudent to balance inflation and growth objectives, given that headline inflation is projected to remain high in Q2 2025 before declining over the medium term.

Member 4

Member 4 emphasized that, given persistently elevated non-food and core inflation, decisive measures were needed to prevent second-round effects from food price pressures from becoming entrenched.

“The Transformation Agenda could dampen inflationary pressures. However, I judge that the upside risks to inflation far outweigh any downside risks. The balance of risks tilts toward rising inflation, requiring immediate action to re-anchor inflation expectations and reignite the disinflation process,” the member stated.

This member voted in favor of raising the policy rate by 100 basis points.

Member 5

Member 5, however, argued that risks to both inflation and growth remain balanced, making it necessary to maintain the policy rate at 27% to achieve a stable equilibrium between price stability, financial stability, and economic growth.

“Other monetary policy tools should be deployed to reinforce the Bank’s tight monetary policy stance,” the member added, justifying their vote to keep the policy rate unchanged at 27%.

Final Decision

With three out of five MPC members voting for an increase, the policy rate was raised to 28%, reinforcing BoG’s commitment to curbing inflation and maintaining economic stability.

NPP Members are the Only People Still Engaged in Galamsey to Disgrace Mahama – A Plus

In a recent Adom FM interview, A Plus claimed since the 2024 election in which the then-ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) lost, their operatives have intensified their mining activities, particularly in forest areas, to make the new government look bad.

US Ambassador urges Ghana to pay arrears owed to American Companies

0

The United States Ambassador to Ghana, Virginia Palmer, has stressed the importance for the government of Ghana to address payment arrears to American companies to improve its business climate.

Ranking Member of the United States Senate Committee on Foreign Relations, Senator James E. Risch, recently claimed that Ghana owes approximately $251 million in arrears to several U.S-based businesses and demanded that the US leverages its position as the IMF’s largest shareholder to ask the IMF to get Ghana to repay its debts to American entities.

Speaking to journalists in Accra, the US ambassador, Virginia Palmer, noted that the country’s indebtedness to American companies remains a major concern.

Ambassador Palmer highlighted the need to prioritise the payment of arrears despite being under an IMF programme.

“I’m saying on the one hand, you know, stick with your IMF program – fiscal conservatism on one hand, and please pay American companies. But that’s a liability. It’s a debt, like other debts. And it’s important that the government knows that before new investors come, they call their friends, and the word will get out. Well, you know, it’s a great place, well-educated workforce, wonderful place to live, peaceful, stable, democratic,” she stressed.

The government of Ghana’s unpaid debts has placed a significant financial burden on US businesses in Ghana and could jeorpadise their operations and investments.

“I’m owed hundreds of millions of dollars, and no company can sort of face their shareholders with that kind of liability. Indeed, now it’s gotten to the point where it is a break on. I think further investment and the government of Ghana acknowledges that, and so, it has been open to some kind of creative solutions for resolving the debt, as companies have been,” she explained.

The US Ambassador also identified disregard for contract sanctity as a major worry for investors.

“Contract sanctity is even more complicated than that. My predecessor used to talk about contract sanctity, and I thought it meant, I thought it was ‘Diplo speech’ for corruption, and it’s not. It’s landlords even saying, oh, well, I have a lease with you, but I like this lease better, so you’re out of luck. It’s just sticking with whatever contract you have”, she added.

Ambassador Palmer, however, reaffirmed the strength of the partnership between Ghana and US, stressing that Ghana remains an important partner to the United States, with economic and social cooperation continuing to be a priority.

Details surrounding the tragic death of a Ghana Police Service officer in the line of duty have emerged, as the service has revealed the circumstances under which the officer lost his life.

The deceased, identified as Constable John Kwabena Dogbey, was part of the Central North Regional Police Anti-Galamsey Taskforce stationed at Assin Domeabra to combat illegal mining activities in the area.

Tragically, on April 2, 2025, while attempting to dismantle mining equipment used by illegal miners, he slipped and fell into the Offin River, where the miners were operating, leading to his untimely death.

“Preliminary investigations have revealed that the Constable, who was part of the Central North Regional Police Anti-Galamsey Taskforce deployed for duty at Assin Domeabra, slipped and fell into the Offin River while dismantling a Chanfan machine belonging to the illegal miners,” the police said in a statement released on Friday, April 4, 2025.

A statement from the police, signed by the Public Affairs Directorate of the Central North Region, ASP Francis Onyina, further indicated that efforts to rescue Constable Dogbey in the initial moments after he fell into the river were unsuccessful.

However, with the assistance of divers, his body was recovered, but he was sadly pronounced dead upon arrival at St. Francis Xavier Hospital.

“With the help of some divers, the Constable was found after hours of intensive rescue efforts and conveyed to St. Francis Xavier Hospital, Assin Foso, where the medical officer on duty pronounced him dead. The body is being conveyed to the Police Hospital’s morgue for preservation and autopsy,” the statement continued.

The police added that an investigation into the circumstances surrounding Constable Dogbey’s death has been initiated to determine the exact details of what occurred.

The police conveyed their heartfelt condolences to the family, assuring them of their commitment and dedication to providing support during this difficult time as they mourn their loss.

Government must urgently negotiate tariff exemption for Ghana – Oppong Nkrumah on 10% hike

MP for Ofoase-Ayirebi, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah MP for Ofoase-Ayirebi, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah

The Minority in Parliament has urged the government to take immediate steps to secure exemptions from the newly imposed 10% tariff on Ghanaian exports to the United States.

According to them, the tariff poses a serious threat to Ghanaian businesses that depend on the U.S. market and could significantly weaken the country’s export sector if swift diplomatic action is not taken.

Ranking Member of Parliament’s Economy and Development Committee, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, called on the government to initiate urgent diplomatic engagements with U.S. authorities to negotiate a waiver.

In a statement posted on his social media platforms on Friday April 4, 2025, he warned that the tariff would increase the cost of Ghanaian goods in the U.S. market, making them less competitive.

“The newly imposed 10% tariff on Ghanaian exports to the U.S. will undoubtedly raise the prices of our products in that market. Ghanaian goods risk losing their competitive edge—an outcome that could severely impact businesses and livelihoods reliant on exports,” he stated.

Oppong Nkrumah also emphasised the need to leverage Ghana’s economic diplomacy, particularly through frameworks like the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), to address the issue.

“At a time when economic diplomacy was significantly advanced under the previous administration through initiatives like AfCFTA, Ghana must now engage the United States and pursue a tariff waiver for our nation,” he added.

The Ofoase Ayirebi MP also linked the tariff issue to the government’s proposed 24-hour economy initiative, noting that a vibrant export sector is critical to its success.

He stressed that inaction could derail efforts to boost productivity and economic growth.

As of now, the Ministry of Trade and Industry and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs have not issued any official response.

However, industry stakeholders and business associations are expected to voice their concerns in the coming days.

Abolishing betting tax will destroy the future of Ghanaian youth

0

Head of Entrepreneurship and Finance Department at KSTU, Dr Solomon Fokuo Head of Entrepreneurship and Finance Department at KSTU, Dr Solomon Fokuo

The Head of the Entrepreneurship and Finance Department at Kumasi Technical University (KSTU), Dr. Solomon Fokuo Kwarteng, has expressed his disapproval of the government’s decision to abolish the betting tax in the 2025 budget, adding that the removal of the betting tax will destroy the future of Ghanaian youth.

According to Dr. Fokuo-Kwarteng, the abolition of the betting tax in the 2025 budget, which was assented to by President John Mahama, will encourage Ghanaians to abandon their jobs and turn to betting as a means of making money.

Speaking on OTEC FM’s breakfast show dubbed ‘Nyansapo’ on Thursday, April 3, 2025, Dr. Fokuo-Kwarteng argued that while betting may yield financial gains for some, the youth should be discouraged from engaging in it.

However, he believes the government’s decision to remove the betting tax will only encourage young people to abandon their jobs and focus on gambling.

He stated, “If the president had asked for my opinion, I would have said, Your Excellency, because of one pattern, this game of chance becomes part and parcel of our culture. It kills our spirit for hard work. It encourages the seeking of wealth in the shortest way.”

“The cancellation of the betting tax says a lot to us… betting is a scam. We should not encourage the idea of abolishing the betting tax,” he told the programme, which was hosted by My Isaac Osei Akoto, aka Knau.

The betting tax, introduced in August 2023, imposed a 10% levy on gambling winnings and aimed to discourage excessive gambling while boosting domestic revenue.

However, it was abolished in March 2025 by Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson as part of broader efforts to eliminate “nuisance taxes,” fulfilling a campaign promise by President John Dramani Mahama.

The move was widely celebrated by bettors and gaming operators across Ghana.

President John Dramani Mahama, on Wednesday, April 2, 2025, assented to a set of amended bills from Parliament, effectively abolishing the Electronic Transfer Levy (E-Levy), the betting tax, the Emissions Tax, among other related bills.

Despite public excitement over the tax removal, Dr. Fokuo-Kwarteng, a Senior Lecturer, expressed concern about its potential social consequences.

He warned that removing the tax could encourage young people to rely on gambling instead of hard work and skill development.

“We must work and earn our living. Through work, we develop skills and take responsibility,” he emphasized.

He added that such practices conflict with religious teachings and could erode societal values centered on effort and diligence.

To him, this tax shouldn’t have been eliminated, asking why one should stake money on a soccer game, win, and not pay any tax, but still pay income tax on gains from hard work.

“I don’t agree, and I believe I will not change my mind about my position on this (betting tax) anytime,” he stated.

Market leadership denies misappropriation claims

0

The leadership of Kantamanto Market has denied allegations of misappropriating donations from corporate bodies and benevolent individuals following the recent fire outbreak at the market.

This comes in response to accusations made by a group known as the Concerned Market Members of Kantamanto Secondhand Clothing Sellers, who have called for the immediate resignation of the market’s 13-member leadership.

According to the group, the leaders are allegedly pursuing personal interests at the expense of the market’s welfare, a situation they claim is threatening the future of the secondhand clothing trade.

n an interview with Channel One News on Friday, April 4, Market Manager Adutwum Atta Manu dismissed the allegations, stressing that all funds have been handled transparently.

He added that a meeting will be held in two weeks to provide a detailed account of how the donated funds have been utilized.

“We will call a meeting to discuss the money that was received and the remaining. All the money that we have received is not with us but with one of the importers. We had a committee which he is part of.”

He explained that the committee was responsible for overseeing all funds received and that proper accountability would be given during the upcoming meeting.

“A committee was formed, and all the money received was kept by the committee. Yes, we have a committee. We haven’t been able to complete the forms. On the 21st of February, we had a meeting as a committee to discuss how much has been used from the donated money and the remaining.” he concluded.

Ghana Bauxite Company deploys methods to mitigate environmental impact of operations

0

The Ghana Bauxite Company is expanding its surface mining operations to mitigate the impact of its operations on the environment.

The present drill and blast method is expected to ease to allow for surface mining which has less negative effect on the environment.

The drill and blast operations, which is largely used in the mining of bauxite, produce air and noise pollution that negatively impact the environment.

Until the new administration took over the Ghana Bauxite Company, operations largely depended on drill and blast methods, with attendant risks.

The new investors are shifting to the surface mining of bauxite as a more environmentally friendly operation.

General Manager for Ghana Bauxite Company, Alexander Gyedu, speaking at the commissioning of a Community Relations Office, “This transition aims to enhance operational efficiency, reduce environmental impact, enhance resource recovery and reinforce our commitment to sustainability.”

According to the company, delivering premium bauxite through sustainable mining practices remains a priority.

“The company is committed to leveraging decades of experience to responsibly extract and deliver high quality bauxite ore while upholding the highest standards of safety, operational excellence environmental stewardship, job creation, community engagement and leaving a lasting positive impact in the lives of the people in our catchment area whiles contributing to national development efforts of the government of Ghana,” Mr. Gyedu emphasized.

The Ghana Bauxite Company has emphasized dedication to all proper mining practices that contribute to the conservation of the environment.

Investments

The Ofori Poku Company Limited, after securing eighty percent shares in GBC, has invested 122.98 million dollars into the company to improve efficiency and ensure environmental protection.

The investments made is aimed at increasing production to six million tonnes by close of 2025.

The transition of operations to surface mining has increased production volumes to 1.8 million tonnes in 2024, from 1.2 million tonnes per annum.

The US$122.98 million investment was used in the purchase of robust fleet of equipment such as the surface miner, haulage trucks, dump trucks, excavators and retooling of existing plant and machinery.

Upon the takeover of GBC by OPCL, the company had 33 earthmoving equipment with nine dump trucks, 7 utilities and 3 light duty vehicles.

Most of the inherited equipment were in poor condition.

According to the General Manager, Alexander Gyedu, by the end of February 2025, the new investors “acquired 42 new earth moving equipment, 52 new dump trucks, 16 new utilities, one surface miner and 35 new light duty vehicles.”

Other machinery procured include, “2 newrollers, tractor slasher, among others for mining purposes.  The second surface miner is expected in Ghana by end of June”.

New fleet of trucks have also been procured to boost the haulage of bauxite to the port.

From the 80 fleet of 9 axle trucks inherited for haulage, additional 161 fleet of the same trucks have been procured.

“We have also secured a service van for the haulage department. The acquisition of new trucks has largely contributed to improving haulage operations from around 600,000 tonnes in 2022 to about 1,700,000 tons of bauxite in 2024. It is important to note that, additional tonnage was hauled by a private transporter in 2024”, Mr. Gyedu added.

Aside from the Awaso Mine, the Company has operations in Takoradi where some investments were made by the largest shareholder, OPCL.

From the retooling, the company has procured three Cat 990’s of 23 ton capacity, one cat 992 of 25 ton capacity, a staff bus, 715 KVA generator, four dozers among others.

The company indicated, “We have constructed containerized office, partnered with SGS and established on-site laboratory, secured a twelfth (12) acre land to serve as a secondary stockpile area among others.”

Staff Welfare

In the area of staff welfare, the company maintains significant investments have been made to improve capacity and enhance efficiency.

The previous management of the company Bonsai Minerals Group left behind 483 employees. To improve production, the number was increased to 1,158.

In response to gender equity, the company has increased the female employees from 31 in 2022 to 85 currently as a deliberate action to empower women and ensure gender mainstreaming in their operations.

Mr. Gyedu commenting on issues of staff welfare explained, “As at 2021, most of the employees were outsourced staff, this status was changed into Contract staff and they were roped into the mainstream workforce of the company”.

“OPCL then resolved most of the issues that had to do with the outsourced staff with the introduction of salary structure that brought sanity in the salary administration system. The same structure ensured that the salaries of workers were increased beyond 300 % in 2023 and by 35% in 2024,” he added.

The company has further insisted on commitment towards providing job opportunities for persons within the catchment.

Already, ninety percent of staff were recruited from the mine’s catchment.

Corporate Social Responsibility

As part of Corporate Social Responsibility, the company is providing learning opportunities to students within the catchment area. Some students have received national service and attachment opportunities.

“In 2023/2024, the company took 74 national service personnel out of which 30 were retained and given employment. Similarly, the company has taken 82 national service personnel this year”, the company has said.

General Manager, Alexander Gyedu says the company supported the construction of Awaso chiefs Palace.

“The company has supported the Bibiani Ahwiaso Police Divisional Command for the construction of their office complex. The company has supported the construction of Takoradi Military 2BN swimming pool”, he said.

The company has extended support to annual festivities of the chiefs and people in catchment communities.

“Boreholes at Atronsu, Construction of a bridge in Akonsu are among areas the company has supported”, Mr. Gyedu added.

To enhance synergy between GBC and catchment communities, a Community Relations Office has been opened to liaise between the catchment and the mine.

“Clearly this is in line with our fifth core values, community, and signifies one of the things we cherish and believe in as a company. Our operations aims to fostering local development, providing economic opportunities, and promoting mutually beneficial partnerships. This Community Relations Office is an indication of these commitments”, the General Manager of GBC said.

Though the community believes the project is long overdue, they are excited about the anticipated impact.

King Paluta has no major show to brag about, he can’t be in Artiste of the Year debate – Vida Adutwumwaa

0

Vida Adutwumwaa and King Paluta Vida Adutwumwaa and King Paluta

Entertainment pundit and PRO for Stonebwoy’s Burniton Music Group, Vida Adutwumwaa, has ruled out King Paluta’s chances of winning the 2025 Telecel Ghana Music Awards (TGMAs) Artiste of the Year.

Speaking in an interview with DJ Slim on his YouTube channel, she highlighted the criteria for eligibility in the category, which states that “the artiste must be the one who has garnered the highest appeal across the country, releasing a hit single, EP, or album, and receiving the most nominations.”

She pointed out that Stonebwoy had received eight nominations at the TGMAs, with four nominations coming from his hit album “Up and Running.”

“Nobody else in that category comes close to that,” she said.

Regarding King Paluta, who had been considered a potential contender for the award, Vida Adutwumwaa argued that the artiste doesn’t even qualify, pointing out that he lacks a major headliner show to his name.

“MC Portfolio talked about how King Paluta has been part of shows in the UK. But we know that the money you charge determines whether organizers will call you back.

“King Paluta couldn’t even hold his own show in Ghana. Look at Stonebwoy’s show at La Palm. A whole Davido, Spice, and many A-list artistes were on the bill. Everyone attended that show mainly because of Stonebwoy,” she stated.

She also dismissed claims that King Paluta’s UK shows were successful, arguing that it’s hard to gauge his impact since those shows weren’t organised by his own team.

“Look at all the artistes in the Artiste of the Year category. Kweku Smoke, as young as he is, was able to get people to attend his own show on a weekday. Joe Mettle also attracted large numbers, even though his show was on the same day as Sarkodie’s,” she noted.

“If you want to prove your impact, stage your own show. Let us see people lining up to hear your songs. That’s where we can truly assess your craft and artistry,” she added.

Vida Adutwumwaa added, “So King Paluta is one of the names I can rule out from the Artiste of the Year debate because he doesn’t have his own major show to brag about.”

Ablakwa seeks clarity as U.S. imposes 10% tariff on Ghana’s exports

0

Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has summoned the United States Ambassador to Ghana, Virginia Palmer, for a meeting on Monday (7 April), following the U.S. decision to impose a 10% tariff on Ghanaian exports.

The tariff, introduced as part of a broader shift in U.S. trade policy under President Donald Trump, has raised concerns among Ghanaian exporters and policymakers.

Analysts warn it could impact key sectors such as cocoa and textiles, potentially undermining Ghana’s competitiveness in the American market.

The upcoming meeting is expected to focus on the reasons behind the new tariff and its implications for Ghana–U.S. trade relations.

Reciprocity or Retaliation?

Meanwhile, a former deputy minister for trade and industry under the erstwhile Akufo-Addo government has acknowledged that Ghana has, in the past, imposed 17% tariffs on U.S. imports, a move that may have influenced Washington’s decision.

However, he criticised the new U.S. policy, arguing that Ghana is still a developing country in need of trade incentives rather than restrictive tariffs.

“The Trump administration mentioned that this is a reciprocal measure that is justified. But Ghana is not a developed country yet. The U.S. was trying to help us develop our economy, and now they are reversing that support,” he noted.

Nii Lante Vanderpuye provides new detail to show woman in mask during E-Levy vote was not Adwoa Safo

0

Edwin Nii Lante Vanderpuye, National Coordinator of DRIP Edwin Nii Lante Vanderpuye, National Coordinator of DRIP

Edwin Nii Lante Vanderpuye, the National Coordinator for the District Road Improvement Programme (DRIP), has revealed fresh details to back his claim that the controversial woman in a face mask during the E-Levy voting in Parliament in 2022 was not Sarah Adwoa Safo.

Hinting that the woman in question had just left Parliament, the former MP for Odododiodio stated that a couple of MPs personally confronted her (the woman in a mask) on that fateful day.

“I can bet my last penny on it that the person in Parliament that day was not Adwoa Safo, but we are waiting for the house to conclude investigations into this matter.

“The stranger was a person who had recently left Parliament. To prove a point, some of us went straight to confront her personally,” Nii Lante Vanderpuye said on Channel One TV on April 3, 2024.

However, the former Dome-Kwabenya MP, Sarah Adwoa Safo, recently came public to state that she was not impersonated in Parliament during the E-Levy vote as widely speculated.

But the former Odododiodio MP is not entirely convinced. He stated that he is waiting for the outcome of investigations on the issue.

Trump’s 10% tariff is a call for increased intra-Africa trade – Dr. Twumasi Baffour

0

Economist Dr. Priscilla Twumasi Baffour Economist Dr. Priscilla Twumasi Baffour

Economist Dr. Priscilla Twumasi Baffour has emphasised the need to strengthen trade under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), urging African nations to decentralize trade and reduce over-reliance on foreign markets.

Her comments come in response to former U.S. President Donald Trump’s imposition of sweeping new tariffs on nearly all U.S. trading partners on Wednesday, April 2, 2025.

Trade between Ghana and the U.S. is now subject to a 10% tariff. China has been hit with a 34% import tax, while imports from the European market face a 20% tariff, moves that analysts say could dismantle much of the global economic architecture and potentially trigger wider trade conflicts.

In a post on her X (formerly Twitter) page on April 4, 2025, Dr. Twumasi Baffour wrote, “African countries today have diversified trade ties, with China being a major player. The U.S. tariff imposition is a call for increased intra-Africa trade as proposed by AfCFTA in an increasingly deglobalized world.”

Adding his voice to the conversation, economist Prof. Lord Mensah warned that countries with negative trade balances, those that import more from the U.S. than they export, will be hit the hardest by the new tariffs.

In a post on his X page, as cited by GhanaWeb Business, Prof. Mensah stated, “Trump’s 10% tariffs: Countries with negative trade balances with the U.S. will suffer the most. That is, countries with more imports and fewer exports to the U.S. will face significant economic setbacks.”

NPP Heavyweights Meet at Rock City Hotel to Plan for 2028 Elections

News Hub Creator3h

NPP bigwigs have been at the Rock City Hotel for what insiders say is a crucial meeting ahead of the 2028 elections. Among the attendees are former President Nana Akufo-Addo, Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, and former presidential hopeful Kennedy Agyapong. Also in attendance were important stalwarts from the Minority Caucus and the party leadership. They sought to re-evaluate the direction of NPP, post-2024 elections, and map out a strategy towards reclaiming power.

Among things insiders said were discussed by members is internal restructuring, reviewing policies, and mobilizing grassroots ahead of the NPP’s arguments. A big theme is unifying, as leadership calls towards unity to face off political competitors. Sources also revealed that there has been an appeal for unity by Akufo-Addo while some also say Bawumia campaigned for campaign tactics that are modern and data-oriented.

Agyapong’s bluntly outspoken style called for even more transparency in grassroots participation, as according to him, “It is essential to build trust within the party and for the electorate.” That hit home with many present, many of whom may believe that only internal reforms would revitalize the image of the party.

The meeting at Rock City Hotel was patently both a strategy meeting and an exercise in building cohesion, with confidence among attendees in the party’s bounce back. Analysts regarded this action as an initial step of many to come in redefining the approach to NPP for a very hotly contested race come 2028.

Eavesdropping on the regrouping NPP, observers claim that failure on its part to galvanize its internal divisions into innovative strategies and reconnect with the electorate will be its bane in the next election. With such star-studded engagement events, the party is trying to indicate its intent of coming back stronger-but it remained to see whether this would be in votes.

NPP will remain cursed until promise to Alan is honored – Kwame Owusu Danso

0

The running mate for the Movement for Change in the 2024 election, Kwame Owusu Danso, has indicated that the departure of Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen from the New Patriotic Party has been a curse.

He says the decision of former President Akufo-Addo to choose Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia over Alan Kyerematen was a curse to the New Patriotic Party, which caused the party’s defeat in the 2024 general elections.

“The NPP did not just lose the 2024 election; the party was cursed by the actions of Nana Addo failing to honor his promises to Alan,” he told Nhyira FM.

According to Mr. Danso, the former President made a promise to make Alan Kyerematen the next flagbearer of the NPP after his tenure as President, but eventually disappointed him.

“Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen agreed to allow Nana Addo to lead the party to the presidency and hand over the flagbearer position to Alan. Nana Addo failed to honor that promise by choosing and supporting Bawumia against Alan. This is painful and caused Alan to leave the party,” he said.

Mr. Danso entreated Ghanaians to exercise patience while the new government puts in measures to restore hope in the economy, which he said has been damaged over the past eight years.

“The economy has been destroyed for eight years, and a building that has been collapsed for eight years cannot be rebuilt in a few months. I urge all Ghanaians to have patience,” Mr. Danso indicated.

He further indicated that the Movement for Change has come to stay and will become a political party that will bring change to Ghana.

He says the government is rather putting in place a new policy which will see the deportation of such individuals upon their arrest.

Speaking during an engagement with the Ashanti Regional Police Command, the Interior Minister stressed the government is focused on removing foreign nationals who participate in galamsey, which has caused extensive environmental damage across the country.

He also indicated that such individuals who are also arrested engaging in scamming and other fraudulent activities will also face the same punishment.

The announcement is at the back of recent efforts made to deport some 107 foreign nationals who were arrested for allegedly destroying forest reserves and water bodies through illegal mining activities and fraud-related offenses.

According to Muntaka Mubarak, this effort underscores the government’s focus on curbing the influence of foreign nationals, including Chinese nationals, in illegal mining and fraudulent practices.

He also indicated that the deportation exercise is part of broader efforts to restore order and enforce the rule of law across various sectors.

The Interior Minister added that engagements are far advanced with the Attorney-General to provide guidance.

Strategic health reforms key to unlocking Ghana’s medical tourism potential

0

Ghana should prioritize medical tourism as a key growth sector by implementing targeted healthcare reforms and making strategic investments, according to Medical Tourism Coordinator A.B. Kafui Kanyi, who highlighted the country’s strategic location and improving infrastructure as major advantages.

“With the right reforms, investment in healthcare infrastructure, and global branding, Ghana could become a leading medical tourism destination in Africa, offering affordable, high-quality healthcare in a culturally rich and peaceful environment,” Kafui Kanyi noted in a piece sighted by GhanaWeb Business.

He pointed out that government is already finalizing a National Medical Tourism Policy and Strategy aimed at positioning Ghana as a regional hub for specialized healthcare.

“Plans are in place to upgrade key facilities, including transforming Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital into a quaternary specialist center and expanding Ho Teaching Hospital (HTH) to improve access to advanced care in the Volta Region,” he added.

Experts say Ghana’s location near the Prime Meridian and Equator, along with short flight times and year-round warm weather, makes it a convenient recovery-friendly destination for medical tourists from Europe, the Americas, the Middle East, and parts of Africa.

Former Director-General of the Ghana Health Service, Prof. Agyeman Badu Akosa, recently questioned why public officials continue to seek treatment abroad.

“Whether you like it or not, health is expensive and when they go out, they pay through their nose. So why can’t we develop our own system here?” he said.

Ho Teaching Hospital touted as a model

Located in Ho, the capital of the Volta Region, HTH is gaining recognition for its role in cross-border healthcare. It has recently served patients from neighboring countries including Togo, Benin, and Nigeria.

New facilities such as a family health centre, pharmacy complex, and a serene hospital annex have been commissioned to support recovery and wellness. The hospital’s eco-friendly design and tranquil environment are seen as key selling points for attracting international clients.

Tourism and healthcare synergy

According to the Ghana Tourism Authority, over 1.1 million tourists visit Ghana annually. Stakeholders believe that integrating healthcare services with cultural, historical, and eco-tourism experiences can strengthen Ghana’s appeal in the $55.83 billion global medical tourism market, as projected by Statista (2025).

The country’s diaspora of skilled healthcare professionals is also being viewed as a resource that can be tapped to support the development of niche medical services and specialist care.

Economic potential and next steps

Medical tourism is expected to boost foreign exchange earnings, create employment opportunities, and attract private investment into the healthcare sector.

However, health policy experts stress the need for international hospital accreditation, competitive pricing, and improved marketing to build global trust in Ghana’s health services.

Meanwhile, a proposal has been made for the establishment of a Medical Tourism Coordinating Unit under the Ministry of Health, as well as the creation of a Medical Tourism Agency, backed by legislation, to manage and regulate the sector.

NPP members actively involved in galamsey to disgrace Mahama – A Plus alleges

0

Gomoa Central Member of Parliament (MP), Kwame Asare Obeng, popularly known as A Plus, has accused the New Patriotic Party (NPP) of sabotaging efforts to curb illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey.

According to him, some NPP members have intensified galamsey activities following President John Mahama’s assumption of office, allegedly to tarnish his image.

“Immediately after Mahama’s victory, the NPP decided to return to galamsey sites to disgrace Mahama. The NPP members who were involved in galamsey and failed to stop despite several calls have intensified their operations,” he claimed in an interview on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem.

“All the galamsey operators are NPP members who are trying to create the impression that Mahama needs more gold for the Goldbod policy. But they [NPP] have returned to the galamsey sites with the missing excavators that were never found,” he alleged.

A Plus’ claims come days after NPP Director of Communications, Richard Ahiagbah, accused the NDC of failing to take decisive action to address the menace.

Speaking at a press conference, Ahiagbah alleged that some NDC members feel emboldened to engage in galamsey, believing the Mahama administration would be lenient on the issue.

The President is not focused on fighting galamsey – Ahiagbah

In what appears to be an exciting scene, some young ladies believed to be nursing students, have been seen in a viral video dancing to NDC campaign song ‘Kwen kwen’ as they scream ‘Allawa no aba ooo’.

The video shared by SikaOfficial on his X account on April 4, 2025, showed a couple of student nurses at a nursing and midwifery training college shouting and running around in a frenzy after the allowance supposedly hit their accounts.

While waving their phones to the camera, they announced the news, as they run on the corridors of their dormitories.

Other students were also seen coming out of their dormitories, while also waving their phones in the air.

They could be heard shouting in excitement, “Allawa no aba oo”, while others dancing heartily.

The news was corroborated by Eric Adjei, CEO of the National Entrepreneurship and Innovation Programme (NEIP), with a post on his Facebook wall.

“The promise to deliver on the unpaid training allowance for nurses fulfilled by Cassiel Ato Forson,” the post on April 4, 2025 stated.

The four-club story behind Jordan Ayew’s 300 Premier League appearances

0

Jordan Ayew is a player of Leicester City Jordan Ayew is a player of Leicester City

When Jordan Ayew stepped onto the pitch against Manchester City on Wednesday, April 2, 2025, it marked more than just another appearance, it was his 300th in the Premier League.

The milestone also places him third on the all-time list of African players with the most Premier League appearances behind Wilfried Zaha, who sits second with 305 appearances, and Kolo Touré, who leads the list with 352.

It also places him among the competition’s most enduring and consistent performers.

This landmark is more than just a number; it tells the story of a player who has quietly built a reputation across four different clubs, adapting, evolving, and making contributions that have propelled these teams forward.

From his early days battling relegation with Aston Villa to a spirited stint at Swansea City, and eventually finding his rhythm and resurgence at Crystal Palace, Ayew’s journey through English football has been one of resilience, versatility, and staying power.

This story highlights how Ayew reached the 300-game mark and the clubs that shaped his path.

Often overlooked in headlines but never off the teamsheet, Ayew established his reputation just a season into his Premier League career.

A hardworking player who, even without prolific goal-scoring, contributed significantly to his teams, Ayew earned the trust of his coaches. His dedication and reliability made him a near-constant presence in the matchday squad.

In 300 games, the Ghanaian started 242 of them, a remarkable 80.67%, underscoring how much his coaches depended on him.

Ayew’s Premier League journey began in 2015 at the age of 24 when he moved from French club Lorient to Aston Villa.

In his debut season, Ayew scored 7 goals in 30 appearances. Unfortunately, Villa were relegated, meaning Ayew spent his second season in England playing in the Championship.

Despite this setback, his standout performances did not go unnoticed, prompting Swansea City to bring him back to the Premier League with a permanent signing for the 2016/17 campaign.

In his debut season with Swansea, Ayew played 14 games, scoring 1 goal and providing 3 assists. In the following season, he scored 7 goals and added 2 assists. However, Swansea were also relegated.

Ayew was given another opportunity to remain in the league when Crystal Palace signed him on loan. Overall, he played 50 games for Swansea before moving to Palace.

At Crystal Palace, Ayew became a fan favorite. He spent seven seasons at Selhurst Park, working under various managers, including former England manager Roy Hodgson. Ayew developed a deep connection with Hodgson, who he credits with guiding his life.

“Roy Hodgson just understood me. He knew what I needed at any time. He was like a father figure to me, like a grandfather. Not just in football, but even in life, his advice helped me a lot,” Ayew shared with Joy Sports.

During his time at Palace, Ayew made 195 appearances for the Eagles, scoring 22 goals and providing 20 assists.

However, as new head coach Oliver Glasner shifted the team in a different direction, Ayew saw his minutes decline. Seeking a fresh start, he joined newly promoted Leicester City ahead of the 2024/25 Premier League season.

At the King Power Stadium, Ayew quickly became a fan favorite. He scored a late winner against Southampton in October 2024 to secure all three points for the Foxes.

Two weeks later, he came off the bench to net a late equalizer against Ipswich. He has since scored two more goals, against Chelsea and Liverpool, bringing his tally to 4 goals in 25 league appearances and achieving his 300-game milestone against Manchester City.

Ayew’s legacy in the Premier League may not be glamorous. However, his journey has been steady, professional, and impactful, the kind of career path that earns respect from coaches, teammates, and fans alike.

He would however, be hoping Leicester City mount a serious survival push with the threat of relegation hanging in the balance.

Prophesies shouldn’t be about going viral on social media, accumulating wealth – Prophet El-Bernard

0

The General Overseer of Spirit Life Revival Ministries, Prophet Bernard El-Bernard Nelson-Eshun, has opened up on the true essence of the prophetic ministry, emphasising that it is not meant for personal gain.

Prophet El-Bernard, who has analysed how the prophetic ministry has increasingly taken the shape of clout-chasing on social media, monetary gain, and selectively choosing what to say, took to Instagram on April 3, 2025, to share a message about the true meaning of having that calling.

“If prophesying were about accumulating wealth, I’d be a millionaire by now. If it were about securing investments, my portfolio would be overflowing. If it were about owning properties, I’d have a multitude of houses. And if it were about going viral on social media, becoming relevant, and gaining popularity, I’d be an online sensation.

“If prophesying is about choosing what to prophesy then I would prophesy over my life to be the wealthiest man on earth. But that’s not what prophesying is about,” he wrote.

He further stated that prophesies should reveal the truth, intentions, and mind of God and not for social media trends.

“True prophesying is about revealing Jesus Christ, uncovering the heart, intent, and mind of God. It’s about accessing the spirit realm and declaring what we see. Prophesying is initiated by the Holy Spirit’s power, not human choice.

“Prophesying unveils profound insights into earthly events. We don’t prophesy to trend on social media, become famous, or seek relevance. We prophesy to reveal the heart of God,” he added.

“You don’t just come and lie and then tell us to investigate” — Solomon Owusu slams Ntim Fordjour

0

According to a report from GhanaWeb, Solomon Owusu, a key figure in the Movement For Change, has strongly criticized Reverend John Ntim Fordjour, the Member of Parliament for Assin South, for making unsubstantiated claims about two flights that landed at Kotoka International Airport in March and later departed for Gran Canaria, Spain, on March 25.

The MP had alleged during a press briefing that the flights—an air ambulance and a private jet—were possibly linked to illicit activities such as drug trafficking or money laundering.

According to the lawmaker, who serves as the Minority Ranking Member on the Defence and Interior Committee, one of the aircraft, Air MED flight L823 AM, arrived in Ghana on March 20 and stayed for five days without any documented evidence of transporting a patient.

In response to these claims, President John Mahama directed security agencies to work closely with the MP to gather all relevant information necessary for a thorough investigation into the allegations.

Speaking on the matter during a TV3 panel discussion, Solomon Owusu criticized the MP’s actions, describing them as unprofessional and baseless.

Owusu argued that the legislator’s allegations lacked evidence and amounted to what he referred to as immature political behavior.

He also accused the MP of making unfounded statements for political gain and urged him to focus on representing the interests of his constituents rather than engaging in what he described as baseless rhetoric

Owusu further criticized political parties for not adequately vetting their parliamentary representatives, calling for a more rigorous selection process.

“The party wants to quickly latch onto something so that it becomes topical. That is what the NPP has been reduced to. You are a Member of Parliament representing the people of Assin South. Any statement you make must reflect the ideals, views, and principles of the people of Assin South. You don’t just come and lie and then tell us to investigate. He lied—just like the last time National Security lied about monies allegedly found at Sarpeiman,” Owusu added.

He dismissed the allegations as fabricated and without merit, suggesting that such behavior undermines the credibility of Parliament and distracts from more pressing national issues.

If you don’t like our polls, put it in the bin – Mussa Dankwah

0

The Executive Director and Head of Global Research at Global InfoAnalytics, Musah Dankwah, has refuted claims of bias following a post-election poll conducted by the research firm.

In an interview on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, Mr. Dankwah emphasised that Global InfoAnalytics is an independent polling organisation with no political affiliation and operates without influence from any political agenda.

“We are pollsters, and whether they like it or not, they should accept it. They are not going to tell us how to do our work,” he said.

Mr. Dankwah explained that Global InfoAnalytics conducts polls for professional purposes and shares the findings with the public, regardless of any criticism.

“We are not a think tank or a pressure group; we are a company, and we are not doing anyone’s bidding. If you don’t want to listen to us, just put it in the bin,” he added.

He further defended the credibility of the firm, citing their strong track record of accurate predictions. “During the 2024 elections, they attacked us, saying I was mad and had an agenda against the NPP. But our predictions from the regional and national levels to the constituencies were over 90 percent accurate,” he said.

As an example, he referred to the Dome Kwabenya constituency, where critics dismissed their prediction that the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) would win.

“They told us we were mad, but in the end, who won? The NDC. They should learn from this,” Mr. Dankwah remarked.

A recent post-election poll by Global InfoAnalytics revealed that 68% of respondents hold former President Nana Akufo-Addo responsible for the NPP’s defeat in the 2024 general elections.

He cited the Dome Kwabenya constituency as an example, recalling how critics dismissed their prediction that the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) would win the seat.

“They told us we were mad, but in the end, who won? The NDC. They should learn from this,” he added.

Meanwhile, a post-election poll conducted by Global InfoAnalytics has revealed that 68% of respondents hold former President Nana Akufo-Addo responsible for the NPP’s defeat in the 2024 general elections.

Auditor-General launches nationwide payroll audit; see the affected state agencies and ministries

0

The Office of the Auditor-General has initiated a sweeping nationwide payroll audit targeting Ministries, Departments, Agencies (MDAs), and all subvented organisations under the Government of Ghana’s payroll system.

The audit, which will cover the period from January 2023 to December 2024, is designed to verify the legitimacy of employees on the government payroll and root out inefficiencies, including ghost workers and financial irregularities.

In an official communication signed by Auditor-General Johnson Akuamoah Asiedu, the exercise will involve a physical headcount of staff and a thorough review of payroll records such as electronic salary vouchers, nominal rolls, and employment files.

The directive invokes Article 187(3) of the 1992 Constitution and Section 11(2) of the Audit Service Act, 2000, mandating full compliance from all institutions. The Auditor-General has called for “unhindered access” to all relevant documents, including digital records, to ensure the audit is completed efficiently.

The audit will scrutinise critical documents, including compensation budgets for 2023 and 2024, staff nominal rolls, salary payment vouchers, and lists of newly employed, separated, and promoted personnel. Institutions must also provide records of staff on study leave, interdiction, or secondment, as well as National ID cards for verification during the headcount.

The exercise encompasses a vast array of government bodies, including the Ministry of Finance, Ghana Health Service, Ghana Education Service, and subvented agencies such as the National Theatre and the Ghana Standards Authority. The directive has been circulated to key stakeholders, including the Controller and Accountant-General’s Department (CAGD) and the Ministry of Finance’s Compensation Policy Management Unit.

This initiative follows persistent concerns over payroll fraud and financial waste. A 2022 Auditor-General’s report uncovered GH¢17.8 million in unearned salaries paid to non-existent workers.

The current audit is part of broader public financial management reforms aimed at enhancing transparency and accountability in government expenditure.

Affected institutions have been instructed to submit the requested documents without delay. The headcount is set to commence in April 2025, with a final report to be presented to Parliament upon completion.

ACCA urges accountants to embrace AI or risk obsolescence

0

The Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) has reinforced its commitment to equipping finance professionals with future-ready skills by hosting ACCA Orbit 2025, a summit focused on the role of artificial intelligence (AI) in shaping the accountancy profession.

The event, held at the UPSA Auditorium under the theme ‘AI and the Future of Work’, brought together industry experts, business leaders, and technology professionals to discuss AI’s impact on finance and the evolving responsibilities of accountants.

In his opening remarks, Col. Nobel Carl Doe Dei-Alose, the Chairperson of ACCA Ghana, emphasised the urgency for accountants to develop AI competencies to remain relevant.

He warned that those who fail to adapt risk being left behind as AI becomes increasingly integrated into financial processes. “We need to support understanding towards engagements in functions that we should be prepared to handle. As we move forward, you will notice that you cannot avoid them,” he stated.

He further cautioned that professionals who do not grasp the fundamentals of the evolving business environment may struggle to reconcile traditional knowledge with modern industry demands.

A panel discussion on ‘Will AI Take My Job?’ addressed concerns about automation replacing accountants. Panellists highlighted AI’s role as an enabler rather than a disruptor, stating that the profession is shifting from data processing to advisory functions.

Akwasi Adu Boahene, CEO of Fidelity Securities, underscored the need for accountants to embrace this transformation, stating, “The future of accountancy is no longer about just reporting numbers but about deriving strategic value from them. Those who can interpret financial data to inform business decisions will remain indispensable.”

While he reasoned that AI would lead to enhanced accuracy and, consequently, trust in the output of professionals, he also cautioned against potential biases. “Trust and accuracy are the foundations of accounting. AI, when properly implemented, can enhance trust by improving data analysis and reducing human error, but there must be governance structures in place to ensure AI is used responsibly. Without proper oversight, AI could be misused, eroding the very trust it seeks to build,” he explained.

Winifred Opoku-Baffour, Assistant Vice President, Rewards and Governance Lead at Absa Bank, highlighted AI’s potential to enhance efficiency while cautioning against fears of job losses. “It is normal for people to be afraid, but that fear comes from a misunderstanding of AI’s capabilities. AI cannot replace fundamental accounting skills. Instead, it will help us be more efficient. The key is to embrace it as an enabler, not a threat,” she argued. She emphasised the importance of upskilling, particularly in soft skills, to remain relevant in an evolving area.

Norbert Dziwornu, Managing Partner at StartOA, reinforced this perspective, stating, “AI is improving decision-making. We don’t have to be scared; rather, we should know how to leverage these tools to our best advantage.” He encouraged professionals to embrace AI-driven efficiencies while maintaining ethical oversight.

Throughout the summit, speakers stressed three critical areas for professionals seeking to integrate AI into their work: lifelong learning and intellectual curiosity, enhancing analytical and advisory skills, and prioritising ethical considerations to ensure responsible decision-making.

The Vice Chairperson of the ACCA Network Panel, Gloria Boye Doku reiterated ACCA’s commitment to educating professionals and students on AI’s evolving role. “There is always this fear that AI is coming to replace us, but through our speakers and panel, we have been informed that AI is here to augment what we are already doing,” she said. She also highlighted ACCA’s continuous efforts to expose finance professionals to emerging technological trends through such initiatives.

The summit also featured a career fair, offering employability and digital skills training. Participants engaged in masterclasses covering blockchain, cryptocurrency, and opportunities in the gig economy. Additionally, 50 top-performing ACCA candidates in taxation, audit and assurance, financial management, and other disciplines were recognised for their achievements in Ghana and internationally.
