Details emerge on death of police officer while chasing after galamseyers

Details surrounding the tragic death of a Ghana Police Service officer in the line of duty have emerged, as the service has revealed the circumstances under which the officer lost his life.

The deceased, identified as Constable John Kwabena Dogbey, was part of the Central North Regional Police Anti-Galamsey Taskforce stationed at Assin Domeabra to combat illegal mining activities in the area.

Tragically, on April 2, 2025, while attempting to dismantle mining equipment used by illegal miners, he slipped and fell into the Offin River, where the miners were operating, leading to his untimely death.

“Preliminary investigations have revealed that the Constable, who was part of the Central North Regional Police Anti-Galamsey Taskforce deployed for duty at Assin Domeabra, slipped and fell into the Offin River while dismantling a Chanfan machine belonging to the illegal miners,” the police said in a statement released on Friday, April 4, 2025.

A statement from the police, signed by the Public Affairs Directorate of the Central North Region, ASP Francis Onyina, further indicated that efforts to rescue Constable Dogbey in the initial moments after he fell into the river were unsuccessful.

However, with the assistance of divers, his body was recovered, but he was sadly pronounced dead upon arrival at St. Francis Xavier Hospital.

“With the help of some divers, the Constable was found after hours of intensive rescue efforts and conveyed to St. Francis Xavier Hospital, Assin Foso, where the medical officer on duty pronounced him dead. The body is being conveyed to the Police Hospital’s morgue for preservation and autopsy,” the statement continued.

The police added that an investigation into the circumstances surrounding Constable Dogbey’s death has been initiated to determine the exact details of what occurred.

The police conveyed their heartfelt condolences to the family, assuring them of their commitment and dedication to providing support during this difficult time as they mourn their loss.

“The Ghana Police Service is investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of No. 63055 G/Constable John Kwabena Dogbey, which occurred on April 2, 2025, at Assin Domeabra in the Central Region.”
