NCCE promotes responsible citizenship and environmental stewardship in Kwaebibirem schools

0

By Emelia B. Addae

Kade (E/R), June 9, GNA – The Kwaebibirem Municipal Directorate of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) has intensified civic and environmental awareness among schoolchildren as part of its activities marking Citizenship Week and World Environment Day 2025.

The Commission visited four basic schools, Tsumwusu M/A Basic School, Pramkuma M/A Basic School, Vision of Christ Academy Kwarmang, and Kwarmang M/A Basic School.

The team, led by Assistant Civic Education Officer Mr. Edward Opare and supported by National Service Personnel Mr. Elisha Nartey, engaged students on the theme: “Ghana’s Future, The Role of the Ghanaian Child.”

Mr. Opare underscored the importance of environmental protection, particularly in the fight against illegal mining, cautioning students that such activities “degrade the environment and affect their learning adversely.”

He also emphasized the need to embody national values: “Be honest, hardworking, patriotic and respectful,” he urged, calling these traits essential for national development.

This civic engagement continued, when the NCCE marked World Environment Day with a tree planting exercise at Subi Presby Basic School later week.

Led by Kwaebibirem Municipal Director, Mrs. Gertrude Adwoa Defoe, the programme focused on the global theme “Ending Plastic Pollution, Reduce, Reuse, Recycle.”

Students and school authorities planted five tree seedlings, including coconut and palm varieties, on the school compound.

Mrs. Defoe educated students on alternatives to plastic use and the benefits of proper waste segregation.

“Green vegetation is vital to humanity,” she stated. “We must take personal responsibility in preserving it.”

She further announced that 29 additional schools in the municipality would benefit from similar environmental activities.

Students actively contributed by identifying the benefits of trees, including fresh air, food, erosion control, medicinal value, and environmental beautification.

Headmistress of Subi Presby Basic, Mrs. Gladys Fiadogbey, praised the initiative, describing it as “a wonderful opportunity for our students to actively participate in environmental preservation.”

First Vice Chairman Seeks NPP Oti Region Chairmanship, Highlights Need for Strong Leadership

0

By Kingsley Mamore

Dambai (O/R), June 9, GNA – Mr. Collins Yaw Ahenkora Castro has officially decided to contest the upcoming NPP Oti Region Chairmanship.

Mr. Castro, currently serving as the Regional 1st Vice Chairman, believes the region is in dire need of leadership, rather than mere management, prompting his decision to pursue the top position.

With a rich political history dating back to his days as a student in Tokuroano during the PNDC era, Mr. Castro has built a reputation as a seasoned politician and strategist.

His tenure as a teacher in Ada-Foah, the capital town of Ada East, saw him championing the NPP agenda, serving in various capacities within the party, from grassroots polling station levels to regional roles and this extensive experience had earned him recognition across both the Volta and Oti Region.

Mr. Castro’s motivation stems from his conviction that strong leadership is crucial for the NPP’s success in the Oti Region.

“The Oti Region now has a manager for the party but not a leader,” he emphasized, highlighting the gap he aims to fill.

He has called on party members and floating voters in Oti Region to maintain faith in the party, predicting a resurgence in 2028.

Mr Castrol emphasized the party’s determination to bounce back stronger and urged unity and resilience among members.

Henley & Partners’ Grace Arthur Wins Excellence Award

0

Grace Arthur receiving her award from President John Mahama

Country Representative and Consultant for Henley & Partners, Grace Arthur, has been honoured with the Leadership Excellence Award in Wealth Management (Multinational) at the 9th Ghana CEO Summit held in Accra.

The award recognised her outstanding contributions to Ghana’s wealth management sector, particularly her pioneering efforts in introducing investment migration solutions to the local high-net-worth market.

Mrs. Arthur, a seasoned executive with over 20 years of experience spanning banking, insurance, and wealth advisory, currently leads the Ghana office of Henley & Partners—the global leader in residence and citizenship by investment.

Her shift into the investment migration space marks a significant strategic evolution, as she now guides clients through complex global residency and citizenship planning processes.

She works with a network of international partners, including legal and financial institutions, to deliver globally compliant solutions aligned with clients’ long-term financial, legacy, and mobility goals.

Speaking on the recognition, Mrs. Arthur stated, “Two years ago, I embraced a bold new chapter as a Consultant with Henley & Partners—introducing investment migration, a concept that remains largely esoteric in the Ghanaian market. There were doubts, even from close allies. I said yes. Today, I am humbled that this leap of faith is being recognised.”

Mrs. Arthur also reflected on her broader career journey, noting her involvement in the early days of Ghana’s wealth management sphere. “From introducing sophisticated investment solutions at the bank to redefining value in the insurance sector, this journey has shaped a 360 view of wealth, purpose, and possibility,” she noted.

The 9th edition of the Ghana CEO Summit brought together over 500 CEOs, policymakers, and industry leaders to discuss economic transformation and business leadership under the theme, ‘Leading Ghana’s Economic Reset: Transforming Business and Governance for a Sustainable, Futuristic Economy’.

Industry observers say Mrs. Arthur’s recognition underscores the growing relevance of cross-border wealth strategies in Ghana’s maturing financial ecosystem, and the role of trusted advisors in guiding clients through increasingly complex global opportunities.

Lordina Mahama urges chronic patients to embrace ‘MahamaCares’ initiative

0

The First Lady and founder of the Lordina Foundation, Lordina Mahama, has called on individuals living with chronic non-communicable diseases to fully utilise the upcoming MahamaCares health programme.

Speaking at the third edition of a free health screening event in Accra on Saturday, 7 June, she underscored the initiative’s potential to bridge existing gaps in healthcare delivery not adequately addressed by the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS).

The MahamaCares programme, officially known as the Ghana Medical Trust Fund, is expected to deliver sustained care for chronic illnesses with a strong emphasis on preventive health.

Mrs Mahama stated that the scheme would operate primarily at the community level, aiming to ensure early detection and regular management of long-term conditions that require ongoing medical attention.

The event, hosted at the Ringway Gospel Centre, catered to over 145 retired Assemblies of God ministers and their spouses.

It featured medical specialists, including urologists, gynaecologists, dietitians, and general practitioners, who conducted various screenings such as blood sugar tests, cancer checks, and prostate examinations. Participants also received medications and lifestyle counselling based on their test results.

Mrs Mahama noted that this third round of health screening built upon the achievements of previous editions held in November 2024 and March 2025.

She reiterated her foundation’s commitment to improving the welfare of those who have dedicated their lives to serving others, stressing the importance of heeding medical advice for long-term wellness.

Reverend Dr Harry Insaidoo, President of the Retired Ministers and Spouses Association, lauded the initiative, describing it as one of the most impactful interventions for retired clergy.

He extended gratitude to Lordina Mahama, President John Mahama, and the medical team, stating: “Every three months, the doctors thoroughly examine us, provide medication, and advise us on maintaining a healthy lifestyle – it is a tremendous blessing.”

Will ECG bosses still be at post if we pay dumsor levy?

Prophet Kofi Oduro is the founder of Alabaster International Ministries Prophet Kofi Oduro is the founder of Alabaster International Ministries

The General Overseer of Alabaster International Ministries, Prophet Kofi Oduro, has criticised the government following the introduction of the new GH¢1 petroleum levy, popularly known as the “Dumsor Levy.”

In a sermon shared via X on June 8, 2025, Prophet Oduro addressed President John Dramani Mahama directly, questioning whether officials at the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) would remain in office if the levy is implemented.

He argued that ECG leadership has contributed massively to financial losses in the energy sector and should be held accountable.

“Your Excellency, good morning. If we pay the D-Levy, will the ECG bosses still be at post, even though they are causing financial loss to the state? Will the same people who created this mess remain in charge? I want to know,” he said.

Citing the challenges he encountered when the E-Levy was implemented under the NPP government, Prophet Kofi Oduro stated that he contributed more than many of those now complaining on social media.

He recounted paying GH¢30,000 in E-Levy charges after making a GH¢300,000 transfer.

“When they implemented the E-Levy, no one in this church paid it more than me. Because on behalf of the ministry, I paid GH¢30,000 as E-Levy when making a transfer of GH¢300,000 for cement.

“I am not part of those people who sit on the internet and speak nonsense about the E-Levy because I contributed to it. Don’t be angry when I come and ask what they used the money for because I am asking a responsible question,” he added.

Background

On Tuesday, June 3, 2025, Parliament passed the Energy Sector Levy (Amendment) Bill, 2025.

The new bill introduces a GH¢1 levy on petroleum products, intended to help offset Ghana’s longstanding energy sector debt and support stable electricity supply.

Let’s support PHDC to deliver ‘critical’ Petroleum Hub project – Alban Bagbin

0

Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin

The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has called on key state and private sector stakeholders to rally behind the Ghana Petroleum Hub project.

He emphasized that the Petroleum Hub Development Corporation (PHDC) needs strong institutional support to effectively execute its mandate as the lead developer of the transformative initiative.

Speaking at a strategic retreat held on Saturday, June 7, 2025, between the Parliamentary Select Committee on Energy and the PHDC, Alban Bagbin acknowledged the enormity of the challenges facing the Corporation and issued a compelling appeal for coordinated national backing.

As a member of the Energy Committee, the Speaker reaffirmed his unwavering commitment to the project and expressed confidence in its potential to transform Ghana’s economic fortunes.

“This initiative is a brilliant one, and PHDC cannot do it alone. They need critical partners — and one of the most crucial partners in any democratic setup is Parliament. All government agencies must collaborate with Parliament to ensure the success of this project. Failure to do so will be to our collective detriment,” he stated.

Endorsing the Petroleum Hub project as a strategic national priority, Speaker Bagbin pointed to its potential in accelerating Ghana’s transition from a lower-middle-income to an upper-middle-income economy.

“This is one of the most critical tools for national development. Ghana currently sits at the lower end of the middle-income ladder. We need bold, innovative initiatives like this to climb higher. Look at Singapore — a small city-state that doesn’t produce oil, yet it has become the world’s oil refining hub. Alongside that, they’ve developed thriving aviation and financial hubs,” he explained.

The retreat had the full participation of Members of Parliament who actively engaged with PHDC officials, posed insightful questions, and pledged their support for the realization of the hub.

Ex-Real Madrid star files for divorce after DNA test proves he’s not biological father of twins he raised

Geremi Njitap and his wife Laura are getting a divorce Geremi Njitap and his wife Laura are getting a divorce

Former Real Madrid player, Geremi Njitap, has filed for divorce after a DNA test revealed that he is not the father of the twins he raised.

Reports indicate that the ex-Cameroon footballer’s wife, Laure, supposedly had an intimate affair with her ex-husband while she was married to Geremi, which possibly resulted in the pregnancy.

Court documents seen indicate that the twins are actually the children of Laure’s ex-husband, not Geremi, as previously believed.

“No children have been born from this union [between Geremi and Laure]. But the discovery that the children were from her previous partner destroyed the couple’s harmony and caused him a huge emotional shock,” The Sun reported.

Geremi played 45 times in La Liga for Real Madrid before a loan spell at Middlesbrough brought him to England.

He was then signed by Chelsea after impressing for Cameroon in the Confederations Cup and went on to play 72 times for the Blues in the Premier League.

There’s no money to work – Minority protests budget delays in Parliament

0

The Minority in Parliament has expressed strong concerns over what it describes as undue delays by the Ministry of Finance in releasing funds allocated for the effective functioning of Parliament.

According to the caucus, the continued withholding of these funds is crippling the work of parliamentary committees, with many now unable to fulfil their mandates due to a lack of financial resources.

Raising the issue on the floor of the House on Friday, June 7, Chairman of the Assurances Committee and Member of Parliament for Bimbilla, Dominic Nitiwul, called on the Finance Minister to expedite the release of the necessary funds to support parliamentary work.

“Parliament is now literally begging for money to enable its committees to function. As a committee chair, I could not access funds to carry out our duties. We had a scheduled workshop, but not even a cedi was released. Members across committees are fully aware that there is no money. Why aren’t we demanding that the Finance Minister release the funds?” he questioned.

However, the claim was dismissed by the Majority Chief Whip, Rockson Nelson Dafeamekpor, who insisted that Parliament is not facing any financial crisis.

“They are alleging that Parliament is struggling to do what? As Members of Parliament, our salaries and allowances have been paid. The Finance Minister has released funds, and no one has officially raised concerns about not being paid,” he countered.

Angela Okorie Slams Regina Daniels

0

Angela Okorie

Nollywood actress, Angela Okorie, has strongly denied claims that she is having an affair with Regina Daniels’ husband, billionaire politician, Ned Nwoko.

In a video that went viral on June 5, 2025, Angela slammed Regina for accusing her of trying to snatch her husband.

She said the rumour is completely false and made it clear that she’s not interested in older men.

“People who know me know I don’t like old people. If you look at my exes, you’ll see I only date young men,” she said. “I spend money on my skin, so I can’t be with an ancestor. I reject you and your ancestor in Jesus’ name.”

Angela also shared details of her only meeting with Nwoko. According to her, Regina invited her to meet him in Abuja. During the visit, Nwoko gave her N500,000 and asked her to include Regina in one of her movies.

She said things later turned sour when Nwoko blocked her without any explanation. Angela hinted that Regina may have caused the fallout, saying, “I heard Regina knows how to spoil people for her husband.”

As of now, neither Regina Daniels nor Ned Nwoko has responded to Angela’s claims. The drama has sparked a lot of reactions on social media.

Scrap 22 Embassies – Ras Mubarak

0

Ras Mubarak

Former Member of Parliament for Kumbungu in the Northern Region, Ras Mubarak is advocating for the closing of 22 of Ghana’s diplomatic missions (embassies) abroad.

They include Algeria, Austria, Benin, Burkina Faso, Congo, Czech Republic, Equatorial Guinea, Guinea, Israel and Cote d’Ivoire.

The rest are Kuwait, Liberia, Libya, Malta, Namibia, Norway, Niger, Rwanda, Serbia, Sierra Leone, Trinidad & Tobago and United Arab Emirates.

In an open letter addressed to President John Mahama, Ras Mubarak stressed the belief that “in an era where even the richest countries are struggling to meet the most pressing needs of their people, we, a developing country, cannot afford to spend beyond our means” and that “difficult and painful decisions ought to be made to give the Ghanaian people the dignity they deserve.”

Justification

His reasons for the closure of the embassies include the low trade volumes emanating from these missions and their respective countries.

“Many of these countries do not have significant trade relationships with Ghana, making the maintenance of diplomatic missions less critical,” he noted.

He also wrote about the issue of limited diplomatic engagement between those countries and Ghana, insisting that “some of these missions are not actively engaged in substantial diplomatic activities that benefit Ghana’s national interests.”

Apart from that, the former MP also raised the issue of cost savings.

That, he said, was because “maintaining diplomatic missions is very costly” and that “the cost of maintaining embassies in the above countries cost the Ghanaian taxpayer several millions of dollars yearly.”

Even though a handful of Chancery buildings in places like Namibia were given to Ghana for free, Ras Mubarak indicated that “there are other costs that make no economic sense,” insisting “we can’t keep paying for high rent costs while kids in schools up and down the country sit on the floor,” and that “keeping these embassies cannot be justified when clinics in rural Ghana are an eyesore.”

“By scrapping these missions, Ghana can save on operational costs, including rent, utilities, salaries, and other expenses,” he added.

In his opinion, “the cost savings from scrapping these diplomatic missions and embassies can be substantial. Based on average costs, estimate savings range in the hundreds of millions dollars annually.”

For him, these funds can be redirected to more pressing areas such as healthcare where “we have to improve our healthcare infrastructure, funding medical research, and enhancing access to quality healthcare for all Ghanaians.”

He also talks about investing in educational facilities, teacher training programmes, and scholarships to improve the quality of education and increase access to education for disadvantaged groups.

The former MP also highlighted developing critical infrastructure projects such as roads, bridges, and public transportation systems to support economic growth and improve the quality of life for citizens.

According to Ras Mubarak, some of these resources can also be channeled into housing since “the concept of basic human needs are food, clothing and shelter.”

“Our countrymen and women need affordable homes. Shelter, like food and clothing is so fundamental to human survival and wellbeing. Implementing affordable housing projects to address the housing deficit and provide decent living conditions for low and middle-income earners,” he emphasised.

Whilst he admits that critics of his proposal may raise issue with job losses, he insist there will be little or no Ghanaian job losses.

That, he said, was because “staff from the scrapped missions and embassies can be redeployed to more critical diplomatic missions where Ghana’s interests are more substantial.

“This will not only optimise the use of human resources but also ensure that our diplomatic efforts are focused on areas that yield the greatest benefits for the country.”

According to Ras Mubarak, “the 21st century requires for governments and public institutions to be smaller, without compromising efficiency. A typical example would be what Australia, a country so advanced and prosperous than Ghana is doing. Ms. Owen-Jones, the Australian High Commissioner oversees her country’s diplomatic relations in Burkina Faso, Cote d’Ivoire, Guinea, Liberia, Mali, Senegal, Sierra Leone and Togo. That is prudence. Even with bigger embassies in places like London and Washington, we can downsize without compromising efficiency.”

He thus noted that “an economically struggling country cannot justify keeping an embassy in Prague and Vienna when the Ambassador in Berlin can easily have additional responsibilities of overseeing not just Prague and Vienna, but The Hague, and Copenhagen.”

Instead, he insisted that “what Ghana may need in these countries I have suggested, should the proposal be acceptable to your government, is for the appointment of Consul Generals in these countries. Where we have much diplomatic and economic activities, the ambassadors should be given additional responsibilities to oversee areas with little activity.”

“Given the current economic challenges facing our country, it is imperative that we adopt prudent measures to manage our resources effectively in order to meet the critical and urgent challenges in health, education, infrastructure, housing, security and so on,” he stated, whilst noting with emphasis, “with prudent management and strategic decision-making, Ghana can navigate its economic challenges and achieve sustainable development.”

One Step Forward, Two Steps Backward

0

Cassiel Ato Forson

The above-titled headline is not mimicking the lyrics of a reggae tune. It is about a serious unfolding situation in our country.

We cannot tackle the subject for today’s commentary without recalling the heady days of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) propaganda ahead of the 2024 elections.

The then opposition had concluded that the best way to oust the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) was to engage in mammoth propaganda, something they did in style.

To state that they lied between their teeth unashamedly is to be economical with the truth.

While we knew that lies or propaganda do not last as the truth will soon be out, we did not expect this to come so soon.

The Finance Minister designate, who told the appointments committee interviewing him that no new taxes would be introduced, has under a certificate of urgency, demanded parliamentary approval for a new tax. Will wonders ever end? Not under the prevailing circumstances in our country with the NDC at the helms.

That the future is indeed pregnant cannot be doubted.

So much water is passing under the bridge of time that the NDC is being swept away by the strong currents of the lies they told Ghanaians.

How do they manage the reality which is dawning on them today?

E-Levy was bastardised with all the force at the disposal of the NDC, with some academics offering them covering fire for a future reward.

They have been rewarded with top jobs for the dirty lies they spread under the direction of the NDC.

The ‘dumsor levy’ has turned pro-NDC Ghanaians into reckoners or calculators, skewed of course.

Today, if apologists of the NDC who could not stomach a flat 1% levy on Mobile Money (MoMo) transactions where 1% percent of 200 cedis meant a charge of 2 cedis, just a few months ago, now say paying 1 cedi on every litre of fuel is better, then we live in interesting times indeed. Anyway, engaging in illogicalities and tendentious miscalculation is part of the NDC propaganda.

Is it the calculation that they cannot do or this is in keeping with their propaganda and drenched behaviour?

How else does one say a fee of 10 cedis on the purchase of 100 litres at a cost of about 600 cedis is cheaper than bearing E-Levy?

No one readily embraces taxation, but taxes still remain the most viable ways for funding all nations. This the NDC knows – in and out of power – yet they raised hell while preaching the wailing and gnashing of teeth that E-Levy is next to evil, and taxes cannot be trusted with the government they opposed. They made the country take one step forward only to take two steps backward.

We have lived long enough to hear today that after all John Mahama and his band of dollar-sharing officials can also tax the populace.

We shall keep watching for the next instance when the emperor’s clothes would be taken off.

UTAG, TUTAG, CETAG threatens nationwide strike over delay of book and research allowance

The University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG), the Technical University Teachers Association of Ghana (TUTAG), and the Colleges of Education Teachers Association of Ghana (CETAG) have threatened a nationwide strike from June 13, 2025.

According to the three Teacher Unions, their intended strike has to do with the non-payment of their book and research allowance.

We’re open to dialogue, but not to renegotiating terms – GRNMA to Health Minister

0

The Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA) has reaffirmed its commitment to dialogue with the Ministry of Health but insists that it will not entertain any renegotiation of matters already agreed upon.

This stance follows the nationwide strike action initiated on 4 June 2025 by nurses and midwives, in protest against the government’s failure to implement provisions outlined in their 2024 Collective Agreement. These include allowances, incentives, and improved conditions of service.

In response to the industrial action, the newly appointed Minister of Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, appealed for calm and called on all parties to engage in constructive dialogue.

However, the GRNMA has maintained that while it remains open to discussions, it will not revisit issues that were already resolved in prior negotiations.

Speaking in an interview on Citi FM on Monday, 9 June, the GRNMA Greater Accra Regional Chairman, Jefferson Asare, reiterated the association’s position.

“We are ready to meet. If we receive a letter now, we will move anywhere they want us to go. But for renegotiation, we are not ready,” Mr Asare asserted, signalling a firm refusal to revisit settled matters.

Mr Asare further noted the disparity in the health sector, pointing out that nurses and midwives are the only group whose agreed-upon conditions of service have not been fulfilled.

“In the health ecosystem, it is not only nurses who have problems with the conditions of service. But we are the only group whose conditions of service have not been implemented,” he explained.

The ongoing strike has significantly disrupted healthcare delivery nationwide, leading to growing concern from stakeholders and the general public.

Many are urging the government and the GRNMA to find a swift and amicable resolution to restore normalcy in the country’s health facilities.

Take advantage of ‘MahamaCares’ – Lordina Mahama to chronic patients

0

First Lady and founder of the Lordina Foundation, Lordina Mahama, has urged persons living with chronic non-communicable diseases to take full advantage of the Mahama Cares health programme when it becomes operational.

Speaking on Saturday, June 7, during the third edition of a free health screening for over 145 retired Assemblies of God ministers and their spouses in Accra, she explained that Mahama Cares, officially known as the Ghana Medical Trust Fund, was designed to fill health service gaps not fully addressed by the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS).

According to her, the initiative will provide consistent care, particularly for chronic conditions, with a strong focus on preventive health at the community level.

The quarterly screening, held at the Ringway Gospel Centre, forms part of a commitment the first lady made in September 2024 to support the health needs of members of the Assemblies of God Retired Ministers and Spouses Association.

Specialists, including urologists, gynaecologists, dietitians, and general practitioners, conducted various medical tests, including blood sugar checks, cancer screening, and prostate examinations and provided medications and lifestyle guidance based on the findings.
She emphasised that this third edition builds on the success of earlier screenings held in November 2024 and March 2025, and reaffirmed her foundation’s dedication to improving the lives of those who have selflessly served others.

She also encouraged attendees to strictly adhere to medical advice and prescriptions received during the screening, noting that long-term health requires sustained effort and attention.

Reverend Dr. Harry Insaidoo, President of the Retired Ministers and Spouses Association, expressed heartfelt appreciation for the initiative, describing it as “one of the most exciting and impactful interventions” for retired clergy.

He praised both Lordina Mahama and President John Mahama for their continued support, while also commending the medical team and church leadership for their cooperation in making the programme a success.

“To us, it was one of the biggest and the most exciting moments for us, as every three months, the doctors will thoroughly examine you, and thereafter, they will give you medication Not only that, they will also offer pieces of advice on how to live a good and healthy life,” he stated.

“The Church Spoke But We Didn’t Listen” – Ken Agyapong Blames NPP Loss on Electing a Non-Christian

News Hub Creator39min

Kennedy Agyapong, former MP for Assin Central and a hopeful for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer slot in 2028, has sparked debate following remarks suggesting that religion influenced the outcome of Ghana’s 2024 general elections as reported by Ghana Web.

Agyapong questioned the party’s decision to back Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia in the last election, implying that the former Vice President’s faith may have affected voter turnout for the NPP.

Speaking to a group believed to be party grassroots supporters, he urged the NPP to reconsider their approach ahead of future elections.

According to him, the Ghanaian electorate was clear in its choice during the previous polls. “Do you want to remain home for another 4 years or 8 years?” he asked, hinting at possible consequences if the party failed to heed public sentiment.

Agyapong also claimed that religious institutions signaled their disapproval prior to the elections but were ignored.

“The church spoke but we did not listen,” he said, speaking metaphorically.

His comments have drawn criticism online, with many accusing him of promoting division.

Gold Stars towering defender, Vincent Atinga says he cannot describe the feeling after guiding his side to a historic first ever Ghana Premier League title.

The Bibiani-based club secured the maiden title after whitewashing Accra Lions by 4-0 at the Duns Park in the final day fixture on Sunday June 8 – clocking 63 points after the season.

Vincent Atinga Sporty FM: “I don’t have words to describe my feelings. I am too excited because I took Medeama to win the league and I also did it with Gold Stars,” he added.

“It was very very difficult. You know, there are ups and downs. There were games we were soppose to win and we ended up losing so it is difficult,” he said.

The former Hearts of Oak centre-back has now won two Premier League titles in three years with two different clubs.

The veteran centre-back led Medeama to their first-ever title three seasons ago before joining Gold Stars at the start of the just-ended campaign, playing a crucial part under the aegis of coach Frimpong Manso.

Another key figure of the squad, William Denkyi also shared his excitement after their illustrious season. Denkyi has won the league and two FA Cups with Hearts of Oak before leaving to join King Faisal and later Gold Stars as a free agent.

“It is a great feeling to win more awards. You can’t relax after winning just one,” he said after the match. “I am just a happy man right now,” he added.

“It was difficult. With Hearts we won easily but with Bibiani we had to wait until the 24th match and it was the last game. We have done it and that is important,” he shared.

Gold Stars will represent Ghana in the CAF Champions League next season.

Many have argued that her lifestyle does not align with the cultural expectations of a young Ghanaian woman.

However, in response to the ongoing public scrutiny, her father, Jackson K. Bentum has finally spoken out.

In a recent interview on SeanCity TV, the popular movie director addressed the backlash surrounding his daughter’s image, making it clear that she is now an adult with the freedom to make her own decisions.

“She’s over 18 now. There’s little I can do to control her choices.”

Mr. Bentum explained that Yaa Jackson is not simply acting out but is deeply involved in the entertainment industry.

He said she now has a professional management team guiding her career and branding decisions.

He added that much of what the public sees, from daring outfits to suggestive photoshoots, is often part of a calculated showbiz strategy.

“It’s part of the branding. It’s the business of entertainment,” he emphasised.

LBCs may collapse without timely intervention

Dr Randy Abbey is the Acting CEO of COCOBOD Dr Randy Abbey is the Acting CEO of COCOBOD

Dr Randy Abbey, Acting CEO of COCOBOD, has warned against the potential collapse of Licensed Buying Companies (LBCs), particularly the indigenous ones.

According to him, the absence of a syndicated loan for the 2025/2026 season has resulted in no “seed fund” being allocated to LBCs, which is crucial for purchasing cocoa beans from farmers.

During an interview on JoyNews’ PM Express, he stated that the situation is causing significant distress for local operators who are unable to function without the seed money.

He noted that while forgoing the syndicated loan might save COCOBOD substantial financing costs, the consequences for local players are severe.

Abbey added that he has engaged the Central Bank, proposing that 2% or 3% of the Cash Reserve Ratio be allocated to support indigenous LBCs, specifically for cocoa purchases.

“What I then told the Central Bank when we engaged them was that, look, you have the Cash Reserve Ratio, where all the banks put 25% of their deposits at the Central Bank. This is idle, not doing anything,” he stated.

He remains hopeful for a positive response but warns that time is running out, and if the current financing model continues, many LBCs might collapse.

Portugal came from behind to defeat Spain 5-3 on penalties and win the 2025 UEFA Nations League title at the Allianz Arena on June 8, 2025.

Spain began the game on a strong note, dominating possession consistently, which led to the first goal by Martín Zubimendi in the 21st minute after he fired a powerful shot.

Nuno Mendes reacted brilliantly, taking a thunderous strike that went past Unai Simon of Spain to level the game.

Mikel Oyarzabal restored Spain’s lead in the 45th minute, easing the ball past the Portuguese goalkeeper.

The Seleção das Quinas mounted pressure in the second half which helped them create a chance in the box where Cristiano Ronaldo neatly tapped the ball into the net to make it 2-2.

With the score remaining a draw after extra time, the game went into penalties, and Álvaro Morata’s miss handed Portugal the victory, securing their second Nations League title.

Nuno Mendes was awarded the Man of the Match award for putting up an excellent performance, scoring, assisting, and limiting Lamine Yamal’s effectiveness in the game.

Police make breakthrough in search for kidnapped Kamogelo Baukudi

19-year-old Kamogelo Baukudi was kidnapped in Vereeniging on Thursday 19-year-old Kamogelo Baukudi was kidnapped in Vereeniging on Thursday

The South African Police Service (Saps) in the Free State has made a significant breakthrough in the ongoing investigation into the kidnapping of 19-year-old Kamogelo Baukudi.

Police spokesperson Brigadier Motantsi Makhele said a 42-year-old police sergeant has been taken in for questioning and detained in Bloemfontein.

“The man is expected to appear in court soon in connection with the case.”

Provincial Commissioner of Saps in the Free State, Lieutenant General Baile Motswenyane, has reiterated the police’s unwavering commitment to uncovering the complete truth behind Baukudi’s kidnapping.

“The involvement of any SAPS member in criminal acts will not be tolerated. Culprits will be held accountable – even if they are within our own ranks.”

A police task team was established to search for Baukudi, who was kidnapped last week by two suspects impersonating police officers.

Baukudi was kidnapped in Vereeniging on Thursday, just before 12pm.

Police spokesperson Colonel Brigadier Athlenda Mathe said a complainant identified as Daniel Malebatso arrived at Marti Du Plessis School in Fitchardpark as usual to fetch Baukudi, a Grade 11 pupil at the school.

Mathe said the duo left the school premises with Baukudi, driving the Suzuki Ertiga.

“Whilst driving along Vereeniging Drive Erlichpark Extension, Daniel alleges that they heard a siren sound from behind, and they were pulled over by a White Toyota Hilux GD-6 Double Cab.

“Inside the Toyota Hilux, there were two unknown male persons; one wearing police uniform and the other blue tracksuits,” Mathe said.

According to Malebatso, the suspects’ bakkie was fitted with blue lights on the grille and what appeared to be a police radio inside.

Mathe said the suspect, wearing a police uniform, confronted Malebatso and informed him that the Suzuki Ertiga they were driving together with Baukudi was suspected of delivering drugs.

“The suspects then separated Daniel and Kamogelo and instructed Daniel to drive at the front whilst they followed from behind to the Park Road Police Station.

“Both vehicles turned back and drove in a westerly direction on Vereeniging Drive. Daniel alleges that a truck went between the Suzuki he was driving and the Toyota Hilux, and he never saw it again,” Mathe said.

Malebatso told the police that one of the suspects spoke Sesotho fluently and even mentioned the name “Thipe”.

Mathe said Malebatso and Baukudi’s mobile phones were found under the bridge on Ferrera Road.

Baukudi has not been seen since, and the police continue to prioritise his safe return as a matter of urgency.

Dumsor Levy Oil Marketers Tango With GRA

0

Anthony Kwasi Sarpong and Dr. Riverson Oppong

The Chamber of Oil Marketing Companies (COMAC) has pushed back against the directive from the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) instructing them to begin charging the new Energy Sector Shortfall and Debt Repayment Levy (ESSDRL) on fuel products starting today, June 9, 2025.

In a statement addressed to the Commissioner-General of the GRA, COMAC described the move as coercive, ill-timed, and a clear violation of due process.

The Chamber, which represents the interests of oil marketing companies nationwide, accused the GRA of failing to consult key industry players before rolling out the levy.

“We therefore wish to state unequivocally that COMAC and its members cannot and will not begin implementation of this levy from Monday, 9th June, 2025,” the statement declared.

COMAC revealed that the GRA communicated its directive through a letter dated Friday, June 6, 2025 – a public holiday – and physically delivered the following Sunday morning, leaving marketers with less than 24 hours to prepare for a major fiscal change.

Describing the move as an “institutional ambush” and likening it to a “Rambo-style directive,” COMAC criticised the GRA for bypassing standard industry engagement practices.

The CEO and Industry Coordinator of COMAC, Dr. Riverson Oppong noted that, despite meeting with the Minister for Energy and Green Transition on June 5, 2025 to present three mitigation proposals, none of their concerns were considered.

The group further warned that the new levy would worsen the already high tax burden on petroleum products.

According to COMAC, the downstream sector currently endures eight separate taxes and levies, which account for 22% of the ex-pump price.

It stated that the ESSDRL would push this figure to 26%, which threatens business sustainability and raises fuel costs for consumers.

COMAC also raised logistical concerns, noting that the abrupt implementation would disrupt operations for cash-and-carry marketers, who had no time to incorporate the new levy into pricing for stock to be lifted the next day.

The Chamber is calling for a minimum two-week transition period, proposing a new effective date of June 16, 2025, to allow for proper planning and industry-wide compliance.

“We are industry stakeholders, not bystanders,” the statement emphasised, urging the GRA to revise its approach and embrace a more collaborative process.

GRA Enforces ESSDRL

The GRA, however, maintained that the implementation of the ESSDRL is backed by law, citing the Energy Sector Levies (Amendment) Act, 2025 (Act 1141).

The Authority said the measure was essential for raising funds to address energy sector shortfalls, settle legacy debts, and stabilise the country’s power supply.

According to Tariff Interpretation Order (TIO) No. 2025/003 issued by the Commissioner-General, Anthony Kwasi Sarpong, the levy will raise the fuel tax on petrol and diesel from GH¢0.95 and GH¢0.93 respectively to GH¢1.95 and GH¢1.93 per litre. Marine gas oil and heavy fuel oil will also attract higher rates, though the levy on LPG will remain unchanged at GHS0.73 per kilogram.

The GRA has directed all stakeholders in the petroleum sector to strictly comply with the new rates effective June 9.

It indicated that products lifted before that date would be charged at the old rates, but all cash-and-carry transactions from June 9 onwards must reflect the revised levy.

Don’t compromise values for personal gains – IET-GH President charges engineers

0

The President of the Institution of Engineering and Technology Ghana (IET-GH), Henry Kwadwo Boateng, has charged engineers not to compromise the values of the profession for personal gains.

“Do not be driven by greed. Do not lose your conscience. Do not be part of a system that puts personal interest above national development.

“You are entering a profession that must stand on the pillars of honesty, ethical practice, and moral uprightness,” Mr Boateng said at the induction of 220 new engineers into the fold of the IET-Ghana.

Competent

He said the future of Ghana depended on engineers who were not only technically competent but who also lived by integrity.

“We must no longer stay silent. As professionals, we have to take an interest in what happens in our country to speak against what is wrong and to promote what is right. The public must trust us. Let us lead by example.

“Let your work be clean. Let your conscience be clear. Let your name be one that will never be mentioned among the corrupt. You are here not just to practise engineering, but to reset Ghana and help build a nation where things are done properly and ethically,” he said.

Mr Boateng said he believed in the potential of the new engineers and also believed in their integrity and, therefore, charged them to go out there and prove that engineering with integrity was not just a slogan but their identity.

Troubling

In recent times, there have been troubling reports on cables and electrical materials procured for the Electricity Company of Ghana left at the port for years with some unaccounted for, and others deteriorating yet procurement of the same materials continued year after year.

LatexFoamPromo

He said, for instance, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Ghana COCOBOD had also lamented about the procurement of jute sacks in excess quantities that remained at the port, unused, as new ones were still being purchased.

“One must ask: Who are the vendors? Who are the facilitators of this rot?

And more importantly: Were professionals like some of us here involved in these shameful acts?

“As engineering professionals, we cannot turn a blind eye to such issues. Many of us are directly involved in procurement, whether on the side of the public entity or the private vendor.

Let me use this occasion to make it abundantly clear: We must not compromise our values for personal gain,” he emphasised.

Formality

Mr Boateng said the induction was not just a ceremony of formality but a moment of reflection, responsibility, and rededication not just to “your personal advancement, but to the integrity and future of our dear nation.

Ghana, he said, today faced not only challenges of infrastructure, energy and development but a more silent and corrosive enemy: corruption, particularly in the areas where technical expertise and procurement intersected.

Mr Boateng took the opportunity to appeal to nurses in the country to call off their industrial action and return to work.

He said as the government took steps to address their grievances, they should consider the plight of patients and go back to work.

Going forward, he called for the scrapping of the nurses and teacher training allowances and to pay attention to their conditions of service.

“So it can do away with their allowances and rather look at their conditions of service.

I think that would be okay because now we have a lot of backlogs there, we have a lot of nurses who have not been employed by the government …and we have a lot of teachers who have not been employed because of financial clearance,” he said.

US and China set to meet for trade talks in London

0

A new round of talks aimed at resolving the trade war between the US and China are set to take place in London on Monday.

A senior US delegation including Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick will meet with Chinese representatives such as Vice Premier He Lifeng to resolve tensions between the world’s two largest economies, which is threatening global growth.

Chinese exports of rare earths, which are crucial for modern technology, as well as Beijing’s access to US products, including computer chips, are expected to be high on the agenda.

Last month, Washington and Beijing agreed a temporary truce over trade tariffs but each country has since accused the other of breaching the deal.

The new round of negotiations follows a phone call between Donald Trump and China’s leader Xi Jinping last week which the US President described as a “very good talk”.

The call – the first between the two leaders since the trade war erupted in February – “resulted in a very positive conclusion for both countries”, Trump said.

According to Chinese state news agency Xinhua, Xi told Trump that the US should “withdraw the negative measures it has taken against China”.

While last month’s talks in Geneva reduced tariffs, they did not resolve a range of other issues including Chinese exports of rare earth metals and magnets which are essential for manufacturing everything from smartphones to electric vehicles.

LatexFoamPromo

Meanwhile, Washington has restricted China’s access to US goods such as semiconductors and other related technologies linked to artificial intelligence (AI).

The inclusion of Lutnick in this week’s meetings with China is “a welcome addition”, according to Swetha Ramachandran, fund manager at Artemis, since he is “behind some of the very harsh export controls of technology to China”.

She told the BBC’s Today programme: “Some of the focus certainly seems to be on rare earths where China, of course, has dominance in terms of producing.

“They mine 69% of the rare earths globally that are quite essential to technology development in the US so I think there are enough chips on the table here that could make it acceptable for both sides to walk away with desired outcomes.”

As well as Lutnick, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Trade Representative Jamieson Greer will meet Chinese officials in London.

When Trump announced sweeping tariffs on imports from a number of countries earlier this year, China was the hardest hit. Beijing responded with its own higher rates on US imports, and this triggered tit-for-tat increases that peaked at 145%.

In May, talks held in Switzerland led to a temporary truce that Trump called a “total reset”.

It brought US tariffs on Chinese products down to 30%, while Beijing slashed levies on US imports to 10% and promised to lift barriers on critical mineral exports. It gave both sides a 90-day deadline to try to reach a trade deal.

But the US and China have since claimed breaches on non-tariff pledges.

Greer said China had failed to roll-back restrictions on exports of rare earth magnets.

Beijing said US violations of the agreement included stopping sales of computer chip design software to Chinese companies, warning against using chips made by Chinese tech giant Huawei and cancelling visas for Chinese students.

On Saturday, the Chinese Ministry of Commerce said it had approved some applications for rare earth export licences, although it did not provide details of which countries were involved.

Trump said on Friday that Xi had agreed to restart trade in rare earth materials.

But speaking on Sunday, White House National Economic Council Director Kevin Hassett told CBS News that “those exports of critical minerals have been getting released at a rate that is, you know, higher than it was, but not as high as we believe we agreed to in Geneva”.

Economists have warned that Trump’s trade policy will impact the global economy.

The Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development said it now expected worldwide economic growth to be a “modest” 2.9%, down from a previous forecast of 3.1%.

It blamed a “significant” rise in trade barriers and warned that “weakened economic prospects will be felt around the world, with almost no exception”.

New data released by Bejing on Monday showed China’s exports in May were lower than analysts expected.

China’s exports in dollar terms increased by 4.8% compared to the same time last year.

At the same time imports dropped by 3.4%, which was much worse than the 0.9% fall predicted.

Offset’s cheating habits had traumatic effects on my body during pregnancy – Cardi B

Cardi B and her estranged husband, Offset Cardi B and her estranged husband, Offset

Rapper Cardi B opened up about the toll her estranged husband Offset’s alleged infidelity took on her during her recent pregnancy, revealing a deeply personal struggle that left her feeling “like I was going crazy.”

In a candid X Spaces session shared by TMZ on Tuesday, June 3, 2025, the “WAP” artist detailed how the emotional trauma manifested physically, marking a raw moment in her ongoing separation from the Migos star.

Cardi, who welcomed her third child with Offset earlier this year, reflected on the final months of their relationship, which ended with her filing for divorce in late July 2024.

“Last year, I really felt like I was going crazy,” she admitted, her voice trembling as she spoke to fans. She attributed the distress to more than just the cheating rumors that have plagued their marriage, pointing to “constant lies, the gaslighting—it was really messing with my head and my body.”

The Bronx native suggested that the stress exacerbated physical symptoms during her pregnancy, though she stopped short of specifying medical details.

The couple, who share three children—Kulture, 6, Wave, 3, and their newest daughter, born in September 2024—have had a chaotic on-again, off-again relationship since their secret 2017 wedding. Offset’s alleged infidelity has been a recurring issue, with past incidents fueling public speculation.

This time, Cardi’s revelations paint a picture of a woman grappling with the psychological and physiological impact of betrayal while carrying a child. “It’s not just about him stepping

ing out,” she said. “It’s how it tore me up inside, and I could feel it in my whole body.”

Despite the pain, Cardi emphasized her current state of mind, noting she’s “the happiest I’ve been in a very, very long time.” Her comments come weeks after she was spotted courtside with NFL star Stefon Diggs at a New York Knicks game, fueling dating rumors.

She dismissed suggestions that these outings were meant to provoke Offset, instead framing her newfound freedom as a necessity for her mental health.

“If I was still there, I was going to end up going to jail,” she declared, echoing a fiery outburst from a May X Spaces where she wished Offset a slow demise, a sentiment she later clarified as an expression of frustration rather than intent.

Offset has not publicly responded to Cardi’s latest statements, though their social media exchanges have historically been explosive.

In September 2024, he accused her of cheating while pregnant, a claim she appeared to confirm with a blunt “AND DID!!!!!!” on X, though she later used Instagram Live to slam him as “lame” and assert she’s “too good for you.”

The back-and-forth has kept fans divided, with some trending on X to debate the ethics of infidelity during pregnancy, while others question the consistency of public narratives around their relationship.

Cardi’s disclosure adds a layer of complexity to the ongoing divorce proceedings, where she seeks primary custody of their children.

Sources close to the situation suggest that the emotional strain she described could influence legal arguments, although no official court filings have yet referenced this.

As she navigates single motherhood and a budding post-Offset chapter, her openness about the trauma underscores a broader conversation about the impact of infidelity on mental and physical well-being, especially during vulnerable times like pregnancy.

For now, Cardi appears focused on healing, telling fans she’s cautiously exploring new connections while prioritizing her children. The hip-hop world watches closely, awaiting Offset’s next move, if any, in this unfolding saga of love, betrayal, and resilience.

BoG Governor pledges to slash lending rates below 10% by 2028

0

As access to finance continues to pose a major challenge to Ghanaian businesses and industries, stifling growth and expansion, Bank of Ghana Governor Dr. Johnson Pandit Asiama has assured the business community of a drastic reduction in lending rates to less than 10 percent before the end of his four-year tenure to aid the country’s industrial transformation.

Speaking at a corporate forum organised by the Association of Ghana Industries (AGI) in Accra, the central bank Governor acknowledged the of manufacturing sector’s contributions to economic development – yet high lending rates continue to impede their growth and expansion.

“Every factory floor, warehouse or innovation that you push forward brings our macroeconomic story to life,” he noted.

Of the numerous challenges Ghanaian industries face – including regulatory complexities, competition from imported goods and inadequate skills in financial management and marketing – limited access to finance is the major constraint to growth.

The Governor expressed concern over prevailing high interest rates, which impact business growth.

At its recent Monetary Policy Committee meeting, the central bank unanimously maintained monetary policy at 28 percent – despite the fact that disinflation is on track and the cedi is relatively stable.

This, according to the central bank’s committee, serves to consolidate disinflation gains achieved in recent months.

Inflation has been declining steadily for four consecutive months, from the 23.8 percent recorded in December 2024 to 21.2 percent in April 2025.

Despite this decline, interest rates are still high and continue to bite industries; impeding access to industrial working capital and operational finance for growth and expansion.

Defending the central bank’s conservative monetary policy stance, Dr. Asiama maintained: “We are choosing this discipline today so industry can thrive tomorrow in a low-inflation, low interest rate environment that rewards productivity”.

He said the central bank’s aim is to restore macroeconomic stability, rebuild investor and market confidence and lay a credible foundation for sustainable and inclusive growth.

“My vision is to see lending rates fall to less than 10 percent before the end of my four-year term,” he said, expressing the central bank’s commitment to improving finance access in Ghana.

Dr Asiama highlighted the AGI Corporate Forum’s relevance, while expressing the central bank’s commitment to creating a conducive macroeconomic environment where businesses can grow and thrive.

“We need to unlock greater flows of sustainable capital and private investment. We are laying the foundations for an economy that is not just recovering, but which is rising with purpose,” he noted.

He proposed that the Bank of Ghana and AGI must establish structured engagement mechanisms which include quarterly consultative forums on industrial credit access and FX policy, sector-specific research partnerships to identify policy bottlenecks and enhance information sharing on regulatory changes and financial market trends.

Acknowledging that the most valuable currency is not printed on paper or stored in vaults, but the trust of people in the economy, Dr. Asiama said: “As macroeconomic conditions improve, we will increasingly shift toward enabling greater private sector-led expansion – particularly in industrial production, exports, and job creation,” he noted.

Ghana’s GDP grew by 5.7 percent last year, led by strong activity in the services and industry sectors.

Ghana also recorded a trade surplus of US$4.1billion in the first four months of 2025 with the current account surplus at US$2.1billion in the first quarter alone, largely due to gold and cobalt exports.

The country’s gross international reserves stand at US$10.7billion, providing about 4.7 months of imports cover. This serves as a cushion against external shocks.

The Ghanaian cedi has appreciated by 24 percent against the dollar, reversing the sharp 90.2 percent depreciation that was witnessed in 2024.

However, the Governor revealed that the central bank is not targetting any specific value for the country’s currency as the cedi stages a firm appreciation bout against the dollar.

“The cedi is trying to discover an optimal path. We monitor the core movements between the cedi and inflation rates – and that will tell us when to pull the brakes and let things take a normal course,” he noted.

Amid concerns that the relative economic stability may be temporary due to debt relief secured by government during the external debt restructuring programme with Ghana’s Official Creditors Committee co-chaired by France and China, the central bank Governor assured the business community that plans are far advanced to cater for our debt servicing.

“We have a profile of all the major payments that are awaiting us for the next year or two. We have what we call the projected cash flow statement or table, which tells us when we need to make more payments,” he said.

The Governor said the two things that will bring permanence to stability of the country’s legal tender is blocking foreign exchange reserve leakages by Goldbod and tracking remittances.

“With the Gold Board, we believe that smuggling and other leakages will reduce, and the next plan is to also tackle remittance inflows,” he added.

He however debunked rumours that the cedi is being artificially stimulated.

“Our goal is not to manage exchange rates but to create a policy environment where market stability can take root,” he said, stressing that the cedi gains are not accidental but the result of deliberate, coordinated and credible policy action that is being implemented.

“The stabilisation we are witnessing today is real, even though it is fragile. It must be protected, deepened and translated into sustained broad-based growth,” he noted.

UTAG, TUTAG and CETAG threaten strike over delayed research allowance

0

Three key unions in tertiary education — the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG), the Technical University Teachers Association of Ghana (TUTAG), and the Colleges of Education Teachers Association of Ghana (CETAG)  — have jointly threatened a nationwide strike if government fails to pay their book and research allowances by June 13, 2025.

In a statement issued on Monday, June 9, the three unions expressed frustration over what they described as the “undue delay” in releasing the exchange rate required to compute their book and research allowances.

They warned that the delay has created “significant uncertainty and frustration” among members, as many depend on the funds to support academic work and research activities.

Following a joint meeting on June 8, the unions resolved that while they are prepared to accommodate the late release of the exchange rate, they will not accept any extension of payment beyond September 2025.

They stressed that the allowance is a statutory obligation under their Conditions of Service, not a discretionary gesture.

The unions warned that failure by the government to honour the June 13 deadline will be treated as an official strike notice, triggering industrial action across all affected campuses.

They also urged the government to act swiftly to avert a nationwide disruption of the academic calendar and to protect the welfare of lecturers and the broader education sector.

Hearts pip Samartex – Ghanaian Times

Accra Hearts of Oak secured their first Premier League victory over defending league champions, Samartex FC, yesterday at the Accra Sports Stadium in an action-packed Ghana Premier

League (GPL) match day 34 clash that ended 1-0.

A towering header from defender Konadu Yiadom in the 57th minute was all the Phobians needed to break the voodoo against the defending league champions, who had never lost to the Phobians.

Unbeaten in their last four home league games, winning two and drawing two while keeping three clean sheets in the process, the Phobians came into the game hoping to cap off the season with a victory to aid them in securing a top-four finish.

And rightly so, the fiercely contested game was settled in their favour.

The Phobians started the game pressing for the opener, with Hamza Issah, Mauwli Wayo, and Konadu Yiadom testing the reflexes of goalkeeper Zakari Musah in goal for Samartex with shots on target.

Hearts’ striker, Kwabena Boateng, had a glorious opportunity to put the hosts ahead in the 25th minute, but his point-blank shot was saved by Musah.

Six minutes from the break, goalkeeper Benjamin Asare came to the rescue of the Phobians, diving to save a shot from Mamah inside the box.

Back from the break, the Phobians finally found joy after a corner kick taken from the right by Raphael Amponsah was headed home by Yiadom for the only goal of the game.

Samartex FC responded impressively but some agile goalkeeping from Asare kept his side in the lead to take all the three points

NPP MP warns new GH¢1 Fuel Levy could destabilise economy amid positive signs

The Member of Parliament for Effia Constituency and a Member of Parliament’s Finance Committee, Isaac Boamah-Nyarko, has cautioned that the government’s decision to impose a new GH¢1-per-litre Fuel Levy could reverse recent economic gains and trigger market instability.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with GhanaWeb’s Parliamentary Correspondent, George Ayisi, on June 6, 2025, in the wake of strong public backlash against the controversial energy sector levy, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) MP expressed concern over the timing, quantum, and lack of public consultation surrounding the tax.

“The aftermath of the levy tells us that it is an unpopular imposition of tax, even if the government has good reasons to impose this tax. The question is the quantum of one cedi per litre and its impact on our newfound appreciation of the cedi and reduction in the cost of goods and services,” he said.

Boamah-Nyarko argued that such a sudden fiscal move could disturb the fragile progress the economy is beginning to witness.

“So, when you see these positives coming into the economy and then you hit it back with another taxing position, then it causes a lot of destabilisations in the system and on the market,” he stated.

He also criticised the lack of engagements with citizens and industry players ahead of the levy’s rollout.

“The bigger conversation is; why were Ghanaians not informed? Why didn’t they engage people? At the end of the day, we are the ones going to pay. Why didn’t they allow us to think through it?” he questioned.

Meanwhile, the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) has revised the implementation date for the new GH¢1-per-litre levy following stiff resistance from the Chamber of Oil Marketing Companies (COMAC).

Originally set to take effect today, June 9, the levy will now be implemented from June 16, 2025.

“The Association has concerns with the June 9, 2025, implementation date. We have discussed with their leadership in the spirit of cordiality and partnership and have agreed a new start date of June 16,” the GRA stated in a release.

The levy is part of the government’s broader effort to settle longstanding debts in the energy sector.

However, industry players argue that the measure was rushed and risks increasing fuel prices at the pumps, adding to the burden on consumers.

We are ready to meet, but not for renegotiation – GRNMA to Health Minister

0

The Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA) has expressed its willingness to engage with the Ministry of Health but insists that it will not return to the negotiation table over matters already agreed upon.

This follows a nationwide strike by nurses and midwives that began on June 4, 2025, over the government’s failure to implement the provisions of their 2024 Collective Agreement, which includes allowances, incentives, and improved working conditions.

Responding to the strike, Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh emphasised the need for dialogue and urged all parties to come together to find a resolution.

However, in an interview on the Citi Breakfast Show on Monday, June 9, 2025, GRNMA Greater Accra Regional Chairman, Jefferson Asare, made it clear that while the association is open to discussions, it will not accept any attempts to reopen negotiations on matters already finalized.

“We are ready to meet. If we receive a letter now, we will move anywhere they want us to go. But for renegotiation, we are not ready,” Mr. Asare stated.

He further stressed that among the various groups in the health sector, it is only nurses and midwives whose agreed-upon conditions of service remain unfulfilled.

“In the health ecosystem, it is not only nurses who have problems with the conditions of service. But we are the only group whose conditions of service have not been implemented,” he added.

The ongoing strike has disrupted healthcare services across the country, prompting calls from stakeholders and the public for a swift resolution.

GRNMA maintains that the government must honour its commitments rather than attempt to renegotiate already-settled terms.

BoG’s quarter-ounce gold coin drops to sell at GH¢9,467.04 on June 9

0

The Bank of Ghana’s (BoG) gold coins continue to see a drop in investment prices, following the appreciation of the Ghana cedi against the US dollar.

The Central Bank introduced the gold coins as a strategic measure to discourage the hoarding of US dollars.

As of Monday, June 9, 2025, the bank reported the following updated prices:

• The 0.25 oz coin is now selling at GH¢9,467.04, down from GH¢9,521.47 on June 5.

• The 0.50 oz coin is priced at GH¢18,222.79, down from GH¢18,332.00.

• The 1.00 oz coin is selling for GH¢35,776.20, down from GH¢35,994.92

According to the Central Bank, the initiative is designed to absorb excess liquidity in the market and help strengthen the Ghana cedi against major foreign currencies.

The Ghana gold coin is available in three denominations: one-ounce, half-ounce, and quarter- ounce, and it is being sold through commercial banks.

Hearts of Oak poised to enter Ghana Premier League top four amid Nations FC disciplinary uncertainty

0

Hearts of Oak could make a dramatic return to the Ghana Premier League’s top four Hearts of Oak could make a dramatic return to the Ghana Premier League’s top four

Hearts of Oak could make a dramatic return to the Ghana Premier League’s top four if Nations FC are found guilty of misconduct in their abandoned penultimate fixture against Basake Holy Stars.

The Phobians, currently tied on points with archrivals Asante Kotoko in fifth place, trail only due to an inferior head-to-head record. However, a ruling by the Ghana Football Association’s Disciplinary Committee on Monday, June 9, 2025, could turn the tables in their favour.

Nations FC, who completed their league campaign with 60 points in second place, are at risk of a three-point deduction following their controversial walk-off during the clash with Basake Holy Stars. The game was abandoned after tensions flared when Basake were awarded a second penalty, prompting Nations FC, on the orders of club owner Dr. Kwame Kyei, to exit the pitch.

Basake Holy Stars have since filed a formal protest, seeking to be awarded three points and three goals, a standard disciplinary outcome in cases of match abandonment. Should the Disciplinary Committee side with Basake, Nations FC would be docked three points, dropping them to fifth place.

This shift would see Heart of Lions move up to second, Asante Kotoko to third, and Hearts of Oak surging into fourth, securing a spot in the prestigious top four.

For Hearts of Oak, the ruling offers a lifeline at the end of an intense campaign, while Nations FC face the prospect of their strong season being undone by a moment of controversy.

All eyes are now on the GFA’s verdict, which could significantly reshape the final league standings and deliver a final twist to an already dramatic 2024–25 season.

JJ Rawlings Lookalike Pops Up Online, Clears Air on Rumors

A man bearing a striking resemblance to the late former President of Ghana, Flt. Lt. Jerry John Rawlings, has gone viral after images of him surfaced online, sparking public curiosity and speculation.

In a recent interview circulating on social media, the gentleman, whose name is yet to be disclosed, addressed the growing rumors linking him directly to the Rawlings family. He firmly stated that although he shares similar facial features with the late statesman, he has never met JJ Rawlings in person and has no biological or personal ties to him.

“I admire him just like every Ghanaian does, but I’m not related to him. I have never met him before he died,” he clarified.

His statement comes amid ongoing public fascination, with many drawing comparisons between their physical appearance and mannerisms. The lookalike, however, stressed that the attention, while unexpected, is purely coincidental and that people should not read too much into it.

This is not the first time Ghanaians have seen celebrity lookalikes trend online. In recent years, several local personalities have gained attention for resembling musicians, actors, and political figures.

While many are entertained by these resemblances, the Rawlings doppelgänger has urged the public to respect the legacy of the late President and not misrepresent the facts surrounding their similarities.

NPP doesn’t give second chance to non-performing candidates – Kennedy Agyapong

0

Former Member of Parliament and New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential aspirant, Kennedy Agyapong, has stated that the party does not reward poor electoral performance with second chances, particularly in selecting a flagbearer.

He made the assertion during a gathering of party faithful in Mampong in the Ashanti Region, where he had gone to mourn the late Mamponghene, Daasebre Osei Bonsu.

The event, which drew key grassroots members and sympathisers, became a platform for Mr. Agyapong to reflect on the party’s electoral standards and traditions.

According to the former Assin Central MP, the NPP has a consistent record of backing candidates with strong electoral showings, and not those whose performances fall short.

He cited the case of Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the party’s 2024 flagbearer, whose leadership in the last general election, he described as “abysmal.”

“In our party, performance matters. We don’t just recycle candidates,” he said.

Addressing claims that the NPP has historically given flagbearers multiple chances, Mr. Agyapong pointed to the example of the late Prof. Albert Adu Boahen.

“Prof. Adu Boahen was a pioneer in resisting military dictatorship and played a significant role in the return to multiparty democracy. Yet after the 1992 defeat, he was replaced. That tells you the NPP is serious about performance,” he said.

He contrasted this with the cases of former President John Agyekum Kufuor and President Nana Akufo-Addo, both of whom earned second chances after demonstrating strong electoral potential in previous races.

“Kufuor had only a few months to campaign in 1996, yet his performance was impressive enough to earn him another chance in 2000. That is the NPP’s standard—performance,” he stressed.

Mr. Agyapong’s comments come amid growing discussions within the party regarding its future leadership and strategy going into the next elections.

Minority laments budget delays; says ‘no funds to work’

0

The Minority in Parliament has raised serious concerns over what it deems unnecessary delays by the Ministry of Finance in disbursing funds essential for the effective functioning of Parliament.

The opposition MPs argue that these delays are severely undermining the work of parliamentary committees, many of which are now unable to operate due to a lack of financial support.

During proceedings on the floor of the House on Friday, June 7, Chairman of the Assurances Committee and MP for Bimbilla, Dominic Nitiwul, highlighted the financial constraints hampering parliamentary duties.

He appealed to the Finance Minister to urgently release the requisite funds to facilitate the proper running of Parliament’s affairs.

“Parliament is now literally begging for money to enable its committees to function. As a committee chair, I could not access funds to carry out our duties. We had a scheduled workshop, but not even a cedi was released. Members across committees are fully aware that there is no money. Why aren’t we demanding that the Finance Minister release the funds?” Mr Nitiwul queried.

Despite the Minority’s claims, the assertion was firmly rejected by the Majority Chief Whip, Rockson Nelson Dafeamekpor.

He dismissed the notion that Parliament is in any financial distress, maintaining that the government had fulfilled its obligations.

“They are alleging that Parliament is struggling to do what? As Members of Parliament, our salaries and allowances have been paid. The Finance Minister has released funds, and no one has officially raised concerns about not being paid,” Mr Dafeamekpor stated in response.

Ace Ankomah advocates establishment of Independent Natural Resources Commission

0

A legal practitioner and senior partner of Bentsi-Enchill, Letsa & Ankomah, Ace Anan Ankomah, has called for the establishment of an Independent Natural Resources Commission to serve as a one-stop shop for regulating the country’s natural resource sector.

He also proposed the Independent National Prosecutions Authority to be a merger of the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) and the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) into a constitutionally insulated body led by a Director-General.

In a paper delivered at the Ghana Academy of Arts and Sciences (GAAS) Public Forum 2025, Mr Ankomah, who is a fellow of the academy, explained that while the single consolidated body to replace fragmented commissions in the natural resource sector, including Minerals Commission, the Water Resources Commission, and the Forestry Commission, would address gaps in regulation, the Independent National Prosecutions Authority would eliminate executive influence over prosecutions, uphold the rule of law and prevent abuses, such as politically motivated discontinuation of prosecutions.

The three-day GAAS public forum was on the theme: “Galamsey Revisited: A National Dialogue on Solutions”.

Mr Ankomah explained that the proposed Independent Natural Resources Commission, which must be constitutionally insulated from executive control, would help to eliminate confusion and regulatory overlap and improve coordination and sustainability.

Additionally, he said the independent commission would allow only broad policy direction from the government, not operational interference.

He spoke on the topic “overhaul of national institutions regulating mining: role of local institutions including chiefs.”

Justification

Mr Ankomah said the country’s fragmented natural resource management structure had created regulatory gaps that hampered the efficient harnessing and utilisation of the resources.

LatexFoamPromo

For instance, he said, prospective miners navigated multiple agencies such as Minerals Commission, Forestry Commission, Environmental Protection Authority (EPA), creating room for manipulation.

He stressed that a unified, constitutionally insulated Natural Resources Commission, with separate divisions for minerals, forestry, water, fisheries, and arguably even environmental protection, would eliminate overlap and increase transparency.

The lawyer also said the independent commission would be authorised to issue constitutional instruments for governance.

He added that the commission would take over licensing powers from ministers, leaving them with general policy-making roles only.

“Constitutionally, Parliament should establish these Commissions (Article 269) and leave them to regulate and manage resource utilisation. But Parliament has passed legislation that directly regulate the resources and vest operational powers in Ministers – contrary to constitutional intent. My recommendation seeks to reinforce the Commission’s autonomy,” he said.

Mr Ankomah said Parliament’s other role was limited to ratifying resource agreements (Article 268); yet the legislature often bypassed necessary consultation with affected communities and chiefs.

“For instance, from 1992 to 2017, no small-scale mining licence was ratified, rendering them unconstitutional. Parliament ignored calls from civil society for pre-ratification audits and reform, and quietly ratified the licences in 2020 – a lost opportunity. I recommend retaining the power of ratification, but making such consultations mandatory,” he said.

Prosecutions Authority

On the need to set up an Independent National Prosecutions Authority, Mr Ankomah said the prosecutions authority would help to prevent abuses, such as politically motivated discontinuation of prosecutions.

The lawyer said it was worrying that prosecutorial independence had been undermined by the late 1950s’ fusion of the Attorney-General and the Minister for Justice roles.

“Currently, article 88 grants prosecutorial power to the AG; but as a Cabinet member, the AG is politically compromised,” he said.

Touching on the creation of the Office of the Special Prosecutor, he said the move was “a half-measure that admits this, especially in the case of corruption and corruption-related offences, some still suggest that, that creation is inherently unconstitutional.”

“I propose an even more robust approach: remove the Articles 88(3) and (4) power of the AG ‘for the initiation and conduct of all prosecutions of criminal offences,’ and vest that power in a new, independent National Prosecutions Authority,” Mr Ankomah said.

He proposed that the body should have full prosecutorial powers; be accountable only to the Constitution and the courts; and be insulated from political interference, just like the judiciary.

GRA postpones GH¢1 fuel levy rollout to June 16

0

The Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) has announced the postponement of the GH¢1 fuel levy collection from Monday, June 9, to Monday, June 16, 2025.

This decision follows concerns raised by the Chamber of Oil Marketing Companies (COMAC), particularly regarding the financial strain on petroleum consumers, which could, in turn, lead to higher transport fares.

According to the GRA, the rescheduling is aimed at strengthening partnerships and fostering cooperation with key stakeholders.

“The Association has concerns with the June 9 implementation date. We have discussed with their leadership in the spirit of cordiality and partnership and have agreed on a new start date of June 16,” the revenue authority stated.

Details about D-Levy

On Tuesday, June 3, 2025, Parliament passed the Energy Sector Levy (Amendment) Bill, 2025, under a certificate of urgency.

The bill, introduced by the Minister of Finance, Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, imposes a GH¢1 fee on petroleum products.

The GH¢1 levy, commonly referred to as the Dumsor Levy or D-Levy, is a tax applied to every liter of fuel purchased.

For instance, if a consumer buys 10 liters of fuel, they will pay GH¢10 in total. The more liters purchased, the higher the amount paid as D-Levy.
