ACUP unveils Pan-African vision, targets 2028 Ghana elections

0

By Benjamin A. Commey, GNA

Peduase (E/R), Dec. 28, GNA – The African Continental Unity Party (ACUP) has unveiled a broad Pan-African political vision, declaring its intention to contest Ghana’s 2028 general elections as part of a wider strategy to build a continent-wide political movement driven largely by youth and women.

Mr. Ken Ameovi Gbeve, the Interim Chairman of ACUP, who disclosed this, said the party was formed out of the need for African youth to unite around a shared political and ideological purpose.

He explained that ACUP was positioning itself as a vehicle to promote African self-reliance, unity and people-centred governance, starting from Ghana.

“We are not here to make up the numbers. We are here to win political power, starting from Ghana, and to rule Africa beginning from Ghana,” Mr. Gbeve said.

“The youth have bought into us, and that is our greatest selling point.”

Mr. Gbeve disclosed this in an interview with the media during an “End of Year Pan-African Health Walk” organised by the Party to rally support from the grassroots over the weekend.

He also revealed that ACUP currently had a presence in several African countries, including Ghana, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, The Gambia, the Democratic Republic of Congo, South Africa, Kenya, Tanzania and South Sudan, with a global coordinating team supporting its expansion.

He confirmed that Ghana would be the party’s first electoral testing ground in 2028.

ACUP was granted a provisional certificate by the Electoral Commission (EC) in July 2023, allowing it to operate pending the fulfilment of all requirements for full registration as a political party.

Under the law, the ACUP is expected to complete all appointments of its executives up to the constituency level.

They are also expected to acquire a national office, regional offices in all the 16 regions and offices in at least two-thirds of districts in each region.

They are also required to draft their own constitution devoid of plagiarising the constitution of existing political parties.

According to Mr. Gbeve, those requirements had largely been met, and the party was awaiting gazetting by the EC.

“We have gotten to the zenith of our preparation. When there is a glitch, the EC calls us and we fix it. Now we are only waiting for gazetting,” Mr. Gbeve added.

Mr. Kwadwo Agyei Yeboah, the Interim General Secretary of the Party, said ACUP distinguished itself from other smaller parties by what he described as an “organised people’s agenda,” aimed at mobilising citizens directly rather than relying on personalities or external influence.

“ACUP is not a party for one individual. The vision is the leader,” he said.

“If ACUP comes to power and fails, then it means the people have failed, because this is the people’s party.”

Mr. Yeboah claimed that Ghana’s political stagnation stemmed from repeated alternation between the two dominant parties, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC), without a fundamental reorganisation of citizen participation.

He called on Ghanaians dissatisfied with the status quo to rally behind ACUP as a structured alternative.

He also disclosed the Party’s plan to formally organise substantive national executives after receiving its final certificate from the Electoral Commission, ahead of preparations for the 2028 polls.

Ms. Nana Ama Dankwa Konadu, the Interim Women’s Organiser, said ACUP intended to prioritise women by grooming women for substantive leadership and decision-making roles.

“We are not giving women quota. We are grooming women to become a substance of decision-making,” she said.

“In ACUP, every woman counts, and every woman has a role to play before, during and after elections.”

Mr. King Augustine Kumakuma Sarpong, the Interim Eastern Regional Chairperson of the Party, described ACUP’s Pan-African agenda as a response to poor leadership and instability across parts of the continent, including the spate of coups in West Africa.

“The future depends on the youth, and ACUP is here to structure things so the youth can advance the cause of Ghana and Africa,” he said.

At the regional level, he pledged to work tirelessly to ensure that ACUP ended the dominance of the two major political parties in the region.

Only shortlisted candidates allowed to write promotion exams

0

The Ghana Education Service (GES) has confirmed that the nationwide teacher promotion examinations will be held as scheduled on Monday, December 29, and Tuesday, December 30, warning that no candidate without an official index number will be allowed to write the papers.

In a statement dated December 26, 2025, and signed by the Acting Deputy Director-General in charge of Management Services, Prof. Smile Dzisi, the Service assured teaching staff that all arrangements had been completed for the conduct of the examinations.

According to the statement, candidates for the ranks of Assistant Director II and Principal Superintendent will write their examinations on Monday, December 29, 2025, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon.

Assistant Director I and Deputy Director candidates are scheduled to sit for their papers on Tuesday, December 30, 2025, within the same time frame.

The GES explained that the shortlisting of candidates was carried out strictly in line with approved eligibility criteria and documentation requirements, noting that some applications were consequently not considered.

It said all shortlisted applicants had been notified through official SMS messages indicating their Staff ID, index number, and designated examination centre.

The Service stressed that participation in the examinations would be strictly by index number, adding that only candidates who had been issued index numbers were permitted to report to examination centres. Teachers who did not receive an official SMS and were not issued an index number were cautioned not to present themselves at any examination venue, as they would not be allowed to write the papers.

“Only candidates who have been issued index numbers are permitted to report to examination centres to write the examination. Teachers who have not received an official SMS and have not been issued an index number must not report to any examination centre,” the statement said.

The statement further indicated that candidates must present a valid national identification card on the day of the examination and clearly write their Staff ID and index number on all examination papers.

However, the GES provided a window of redress for teachers who believe they were wrongly omitted. Teachers who obtained their last promotion in or before 2021, met the required qualifications and applied for the current promotion cycle, but neither received an SMS nor found their names on the official shortlists at Regional or District offices, are to submit their last promotion letter and proof of application to their respective Regional Education Offices for review.

The GES appealed to candidates to comply fully with the guidelines, saying adherence would ensure a smooth, credible and well-coordinated promotion exercise.

It added that all enquiries should be directed to officially designated phone numbers and email addresses, stressing that any further communication would be made only through official GES channels.

BS4Ks project ends 2025 with free eye screening in Tumu

0

By Philip Tengzu, GNA

Wa, (UW/R), Dec. 28, GNA – The Blissful Sight for Kids (BS4Ks) project, a children-centred eye screening initiative, has ended the year 2025 with a free eye screening exercise for residents of Tumu in the Sissala East Municipality.

A total of 360 people, most of them children, were screened during the exercise, out of which 39 were found to have normal eyesight, while 301 presented various pathological conditions and were provided with medication.

Additionally, 16 people were diagnosed with refractive errors and given eyeglasses, while four others were found to have cataracts and glaucoma.

The BS4Ks project is an initiative of Bliss Eye Care, a private eye clinic in Wa, in partnership with Ghana Vision, a Swiss-based charity organisation, and is aimed at eradicating childhood blindness through free eye screening and early intervention.

Since its inception about a decade ago, the project has reached thousands of children in the Upper West Region and beyond, helping to address eye conditions that could hinder children’s access to quality education.

Some parents whose wards benefited from the screening exercise in Tumu at the weekend expressed gratitude to the benefactors, as access to specialised eye care services, particularly in rural communities, remained a major challenge.

Madam Niamatu Nuhu, whose daughter was screened and provided with eyeglasses, expressed joy and appreciation, and said the intervention would significantly improve her child’s vision and academic performance.

“It was her teacher who drew my attention to her eye problem. I also monitored her and realised that if she wanted to read from a book, she had to bring it closer to her eyes.

I took her to the hospital here in Tumu, but I was told they did not have the machines to detect the child’s problem,” she explained.

Madam Nuhu, however, said she was informed that a team of eye specialists would be coming to Tumu to conduct free eye screening, which she took advantage of.

Dr Zakarea Al-Hassan Balure, the Manager of Bliss Eye Care, expressed concern that some parents did not take the eye health of their children seriously and sometimes relegated it to the background even when children complained of eye problems.

“Children are always pushed to the background, and even when they complain of eye conditions, they are not taken seriously because people feel that eye diseases are more common among adults than children.

We think that once we address these conditions early, it gives the child a brighter future because he or she can learn better, see better in class, and comprehend what is happening around them”, he observed.

Dr Balure, an optometrist, encouraged parents and guardians to prioritise their children’s eye health, stressing that the eyes were irreplaceable and if damaged could negatively affect a child’s holistic development.

TOR resumes operation after years of inactivity

0

The Tema Oil Refinery Limited (TOR) has announced the resumption of crude oil refining operations.

This follows several years of inactivity, marking a historic milestone in the revitalisation of Ghana’s downstream petroleum sector.

A statement issued by management stated that this achievement followed the successful completion of major Turnaround Maintenance (TAM) works on the Crude Distillation Unit (CDU), executed within three months from August 01, 2025, to October 30, 2025.

It added that the maintenance works were undertaken in strict compliance with international engineering, safety, and operational standards.

According to management, following the completion of the TAM, the National Petroleum Authority (NPA) conducted

comprehensive regulatory inspections and confirmed TOR’s full compliance with all mandatory safety and operational requirements.

“Consequently, the NPA granted clearance for the resumption of refining activities.”

It noted that with the required regulatory clearance, refining operations began on Friday, December 19, 2025, with

all the line of petroleum products going to storage for the first time in several years.

“As part of a phased transition toward full operational capacity, and in advance of the refinery’s official

recommissioning, TOR will continue operating over the coming months to stabilise systems, optimise

performance, and ensure sustained operational reliability.”

Management further stated that TOR has completed the installation of a new furnace, F-61, which would soon be commissioned and integrated into the CDU.

This critical upgrade, it added, would enable the refinery to restore its original nameplate capacity of 45,000 barrels per stream day (bpsd), up from the current operating level of 28,000 bpsd, with a clear strategic pathway to expand the capacity to 60,000 bpsd in the medium term, following the installation of a new air cooler.

It stated that the government of Ghana would formally commission and tie in the F-61 furnace at a later date to be communicated to stakeholders.

Management expressed its deepest appreciation to President John Dramani Mahama for his continued support, vision, leadership, and steadfast dedication and commitment to the restoration of TOR as a critical pillar of Ghana’s energy infrastructure.

“The refinery also extends profound appreciation to the Minister for Energy and Green Transition, Hon. Dr John Abdulai Jinapor (MP), whose dedication, technical oversight, and policy leadership have been instrumental in restoring TOR to operational life.”

TOR further commended its Board of Directors, management, and entire workforce for their enthusiasm, resilience, professionalism, and unwavering sense of purpose throughout this revival journey.

“The staff of TOR remain committed to sustaining the refinery’s renewed operational momentum and achieving excellence across all aspects of refinery performance.”

From Osibisa, Daddy Lumba to whoever, no one has worked harder than Stonebwoy

Bullgod is an artiste manager and entertainment pundit play videoBullgod is an artiste manager and entertainment pundit

Artiste manager and entertainment critic Bullgod has labelled Afrodancehall artiste Stonebwoy as the hardest-working musician Ghana has ever seen.

Speaking on UTV’s United Showbiz on December 27, 2025, Bullgod said that although he was not around when Ghana music began, he believes Stonebwoy has worked harder than every artiste from Osibisa to Daddy Lumba to Amakye Dede.

#BHIMFEST2025: Stonebwoy shuts down Accra with sold-out stadium concert

He questioned whether artistes like Osibisa, Kojo Antwi, or Daddy Lumba had ever collaborated with major international acts and brought them to Ghana, noting that Stonebwoy consistently does this.

“I wasn’t around when Ghana music began, but I can say authoritatively that Stonebwoy has worked more than everybody who found themselves in the music industry, from Osibisa to whoever. Did you ever see Osibisa work with the Jackson 5? Who did Daddy Lumba ever feature outside Ghana? Have you seen Amakye Dede ever work with a foreign act and bring them to Ghana?” he said.

Bullgod added that while talent cannot be compared, Stonebwoy’s work ethic stands out. “You cannot compare talent, but I’m saying the work, and Stonebwoy has overworked, and he will go down in history as one of the people who purposely championed Ghana,” he said.

On December 24, 2025, Stonebwoy hosted the tenth edition of his annual Bhim Concert, which has consistently brought major international artistes to Ghana, including 10Tik, Spice, Beenie Man, Sean Paul, Davido, and others.

Accra Sports Stadium after BHIMFEST Accra Sports Stadium after BHIMFEST

The Accra Sports Stadium pitch has emerged in impressive condition following the high-profile BHIMFEST 2025 concert headlined by Stonebwoy, easing long-standing concerns about the impact of non-football events on Ghana’s premier sporting venue.

BHIMFEST 2025 was staged on Wednesday, December 24, 2025, at the Accra Sports Stadium, one of several major concerts held at the venue during an intense festive season.

Despite the heavy foot traffic, stage installations and large crowds, the playing surface has remained largely intact, thanks to newly acquired pitch covers.

The NSA confirmed that the protective covers were installed ahead of recent events as part of measures to preserve the stadium’s playing surface during non-sporting activities.

Installation began at the Accra Sports Stadium weeks ago, with more events scheduled in the coming weeks.

Following the festive run of events, recovery work on the pitch is now almost complete.

Groundsmen have carried out minor repair works, grass treatment and surface leveling to ensure the pitch meets required standards for competitive football.

Early visual checks show the pitch still looking green and firm, a significant improvement compared to previous years when concerts often left the surface damaged.

UK curbs DRC visas, announces migrant return deals with Angola, Namibia

0

UK Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood unveiled dramatic changes to the country's asylum system UK Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood unveiled dramatic changes to the country’s asylum system

The United Kingdom has imposed visa restrictions on the Democratic Republic of the Congo, accusing its government of failing to cooperate with its new policy on the return of undocumented migrants and those who commit criminal offences.

The UK Home Office announced the measures in a statement late on Saturday. It also said that Angola and Namibia have agreed to step up efforts to take back their citizens.

The agreements mark the first major change under sweeping reforms unveiled by Secretary of State for the Home Department Shabana Mahmood last month to make refugee status temporary and speed up the deportation of those who arrive without documents in the UK.

There was no immediate comment from the DRC, Angola or Namibia.

The Home Office said the DRC failed to meet the UK’s requirements for cooperation and has now been stripped of fast-track visa services and preferential treatment for VIPs and decision makers.

Mahmood said the UK could escalate measures to a complete halt of visas for the DRC unless cooperation rapidly improves.

“We expect countries to play by the rules. If one of their citizens has no right to be here, they must take them back,” she said.

“I thank Angola and Namibia and welcome their co-operation. Now is the time for the Democratic Republic of Congo to do the right thing. Take your citizens back or lose the privilege of entering our country.

“This is just the start of the measures I am taking to secure our border and ramp up the removal of those with no right to be here,” she added.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s centre-left government unveiled sweeping changes to the UK’s asylum system last month, including drastically cutting protections for refugees and their children, as part of a bid to stem the arrivals of irregular migrants that have fuelled rising anger on the far-right.

More than 39,000 people, many fleeing conflict, have arrived in the UK on small boats this year, more than for the whole of 2024 but lower than the record set in 2022, when the Conservatives were in power.

Mahmood told lawmakers that the reforms, modelled on Denmark’s strict asylum system, would discourage refugees and asylum seekers from crossing the English Channel from France on small boats.

She described the current system as “out of control and unfair”, adding that it was an “uncomfortable truth” that the government must face.

Under the reforms, refugee status will become temporary and will be reviewed every 30 months. Refugees will be forced to return to their home countries once those are deemed safe.

They will also need to wait for 20 years, instead of the current five, before they can apply for permanent residency.

The government has also said it will legislate to make it harder for irregular migrants and foreign criminals to use the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR) to stop deportation.

Since July last year, the UK has “removed more than 50,000 people with no right to remain”, a 23 percent increase on the previous period, and instructed diplomats to make returns a top priority, Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs Yvette Cooper said.

The policy has been facing criticism, however, with Mark Davies, a former adviser to the Foreign Office, calling it “shameful” and a departure from “Britain’s historic commitment to support refugees”.

Former Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn also described the policy as “draconian”, adding that it tries to “appease the most ghastly, racist right-wing forces all across Europe”, while undermining the UN Convention on Human Rights.

Enver Solomon, chief executive of the Refugee Council, urged the government to reconsider, warning the plans “will not deter” crossings, and that refugees who work hard should be able to build “secure, settled lives”.

Official figures cited by the AFP news agency showed that asylum claims in the UK are at a record high, with about 111,000 applications made in the year to June 2025.

But the number of initial positive decisions the UK authorities granted fell from 2023 to 2024.

Most asylum seekers and refugees arrive in the UK legally. Net migration reached a record high of 906,000 in the year to June 2023, before it fell to 431,000 in 2024, partly reflecting the tighter rules.

Prof. Asuming calls for transparency in GoldBod accounts

0

Prof. Patrick Asuming, Economist, has emphasised the need for the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) to support its claims with comprehensive accounting.

Prof. Asuming said such oversight of state institutions is both expected and necessary, particularly when national resources are involved.

Speaking during an interview with TV3, Prof. Asuming stated, “This is for the country of Ghana,” he stated. “When institutions of state are doing things and people comment, it’s not necessarily an attack.”

Prof. Asuming also noted a change in the Gold Board’s communication style. He observed that while earlier statements appeared confrontational, recent explanations acknowledge losses while highlighting that the benefits outweigh the costs.

“The earlier statement came across as defiant,” he said. “But now the position seems to be that yes, there are losses, and the benefits outweigh the costs. That is a point of view.”

His remarks come amid claims that the Bank of Ghana is allegedly concealing losses linked to the Gold-for-Reserves programme. The Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) had earlier rejected assertions in an International Monetary Fund (IMF) report that the Bank of Ghana incurred losses of approximately $214 million under the programme.

The IMF had flagged these reported losses as a potential risk to Ghana’s broader macroeconomic stabilisation efforts, attributing them to transactions involving artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM) dore gold, as well as what it termed “GoldBod off-taker fees.”

In a detailed response posted on social media, GoldBod’s Chief Executive Officer, Sammy Gyamfi, described the claims as inaccurate and based on misconceptions about the Board’s operations.

He stated that GoldBod has not recorded any losses under its gold trading programmes and is on track to declare an income surplus of no less than GH¢600 million for the 2025 financial year, according to unaudited financial statements published on the Board’s website.

Later, speaking on TV3, Gyamfi clarified that the issue is not about denial but rather about accounting treatment and financial reporting standards.

“The Bank of Ghana is not running away from any loss. These are accounting matters that have been referred to external auditors to ensure fairness and balance,” he said.

Six commercial drivers arrested for overcharging in Accra

0

A taskforce operation led by the Mayor of Accra, Michael Kpakpo Allotey, targeting commercial drivers who charge unapproved fares, has resulted in the arrest of six drivers in the Central Business District of Accra.

The enforcement exercise began around 5:30 p.m. on Saturday December 27, and covered major routes from the COCOBOD section of Kwame Nkrumah Avenue to the Farisco traffic light, areas that experience high passenger traffic during peak hours. Commuters heading to destinations including Kaneshie, Awoshie, Kasoa, and Lapaz were directly affected.

During the operation, the Mayor and his team stopped trotros and other commercial vehicles to verify fares charged against approved rates, cross-checking with passengers onboard. While many drivers adhered to the approved fares, six were found overcharging and were subsequently arrested.

The Mayor later cautioned and pardoned the drivers, explaining that the exercise was the first day of the enforcement operation and intended to serve as a firm warning.

“Sustained enforcement is necessary to ensure fairness in public transport pricing and deter drivers who exploit high demand to overcharge passengers,” he said.

In a gesture aimed at easing commuter burden, Mayor Allotey paid full lorry fares for all passengers on a bus headed to Lapaz, reinforcing the Assembly’s message that passengers should not pay beyond approved rates.

The Mayor confirmed that enforcement would continue across the metropolis, with strict monitoring and penalties for defaulters.

He also cautioned both drivers and traders against practices that undermine public order, assuring that the Assembly would maintain a visible presence along key corridors to protect road users and maintain discipline.

Fighting galamsey and protecting Ghana’s environment remains a top priority

Sammy Gyamfi is the CEO of Goldbod Sammy Gyamfi is the CEO of Goldbod

The Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Gold Board, Sammy Gyamfi, has reiterated the institution’s unwavering commitment to combating illegal mining and ensuring sustainable practices in Ghana’s gold sector.

Speaking on TV3’s Key Points program, Gyamfi emphasised that environmental protection is central to GoldBod’s mandate, and the agency is taking concrete steps to enforce it.

“When we took over, there was no real fight against illegal mining. We did not maintain the status quo, highlighting the proactive measures already implemented,” he said.

He noted that Legislative Instruments 23 and 24, which previously permitted certain mining activities in protected areas, have been revoked.

“Mining is no longer permissible in forest reserves, and NAIMOS is actively cracking down on illegal miners everywhere. You have seen the videos,” he added.

Goldbod to fully take over gold trading and reserves in 2026

Gyamfi stressed that GoldBod has institutionalized environmental protection by making it illegal to purchase gold sourced from unauthorized mining activities.

He explained that under Section 59 of the GoldBod Act, any purchase of gold from illegal mining operations constitutes an offense.

The CEO also addressed criticisms about the pace of implementing traceability measures.

While Ghana has a long history of gold procurement dating back to colonial times, he believes the introduction of a national traceability program is a landmark initiative.

“We have given timelines for the traceability program to be fully operational. Every gram of gold bought by the state will be traceable to its mine of origin, and it must come from a sustainable mine,” he explained.

He noted the challenges posed by decades of unregulated gold trading and smuggling, which have historically undermined both the environment and the national economy.

“Our approach balances economic benefits with environmental responsibility, ensuring that Ghana’s gold sector contributes to development without compromising our natural heritage.”

How OSP interventions stopped Agyapa, TOR deals and protected state assets – Sammy Darko reveals

Sammy Darko is the Director of Strategy, Research, and Communications at the OSP Sammy Darko is the Director of Strategy, Research, and Communications at the OSP

The Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) has stated that it has saved Ghana millions of cedis by exercising its preventive mandate to identify and halt corruption risks before they result in financial losses.

This was made known by the Director of Strategy, Research, and Communications, Sammy Darko, on Sunday, December 28, 2025, on Facebook.

Special Prosecutor has survived two assassination attempts – Sammy Darko reveals

Explaining the impact of the OSP’s work, he said the office has focused not only on investigations and prosecutions but also on preventing questionable transactions that could harm the public purse.

“The OSP…using its preventive powers,” he noted, has played a critical role in protecting national resources.

He cited the now-suspended Agyapa Royalties deal as a major example of effective intervention.

According to Darko, the OSP raised concerns about corruption risks surrounding the transaction, which ultimately prevented its implementation.

“The OSP saved Ghana millions of cedis when it raised corruption risks around the Agyapa royalties deal.

“Those concerns stopped a bad deal that could have cost the country far more in the long run. That money stayed with Ghana, not private interests,” he said.

Darko also pointed to the planned sale of the Tema Oil Refinery (TOR), where similar concerns were flagged.

“The same thing happened with the planned sale of TOR. The OSP flagged corruption risks in a proposed partnership, and the sale did not go through,” he indicated.

He stressed that without the OSP’s intervention, the country could have lost a strategic state asset.

“Without that intervention, a key state asset would likely have been lost,” he added.

Beyond major transactions, the OSP has also helped curb financial leakages within the public sector payroll.

Darko revealed that the office uncovered ghost names despite existing Ghana Card verification systems.

“These were people being paid even though they did not exist or no longer worked there,” he explained.

According to him, removing such names from payrolls prevented continuous losses to the state.

‘No wonder things don’t get done at the OSP’ – Kpebu berates Sammy Darko

He concluded that these examples demonstrate the value of preventive anti-corruption measures by the OSP.

Darko’s comments follow the reopening and operation of the Tema Oil Refinery (TOR), which, according to him, was one of the institutions the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) prevented from being sold after it flagged corruption risks in a proposed partnership with Tema Energy and Processing Limited around 2023–2024.

Paul van Zuydam is South Africa's newest billionaire Paul van Zuydam is South Africa’s newest billionaire

Paul van Zuydam has become South Africa’s newest dollar billionaire, joining the ranks of the country’s wealthiest individuals tracked by Forbes.

According to Forbes’ real-time estimates in December 2025, van Zuydam’s net worth stands at $1.7 billion (about R28.4 billion), ranking him as the world’s 2,186th richest person.

His addition lifts South Africa’s total number of billionaires on the global list to eight, alongside prominent names such as Johann Rupert and Nicky Oppenheimer.

At 87, Van Zuydam is the owner and chairman of French cookware maker Le Creuset, a company he acquired in the late 1980s when it was struggling financially.

He transformed the brand into a global household name, best known for its hand-finished cast-iron cookware and stringent quality standards at its foundry in Fresnoy-le-Grand, northern France.

Under his leadership, Le Creuset concentrated production in France, invested heavily in automation, and broadened its product range.

Manufacturing capacity was doubled, output rose to more than 20,000 pieces a day, and the company expanded aggressively into the United States and Asia.

The business also diversified into ceramics and other cookware categories while keeping its signature cast-iron manufacturing rooted in France. Since 2001, Le Creuset has grown without taking on external debt.

Today, the company generates more than $850 million (around R14 billion) in annual revenue, cementing van Zuydam’s place among Africa’s dollar billionaires.

Donsey Kitchen and Grills, in collaboration with the Firm Health Foundation and GhanaWeb, on December 26, 2025, launched its annual Feeding with Dignity initiative in Accra, Ghana.

The project aimed to provide nutritious meals to 3,000 underprivileged individuals living on the streets of Accra.

Speaking at the event, the MD of Donsey Kitchen and Grills, Joseph Sena Donnie explained the inspiration behind the Feeding with Dignity initiative.

Chinese community in Ghana, UNESCO donate over GH¢300,000 to Motherly Love Orphanage

“It all started with my birthday. I decided not to be doing party again, but rather party with the kids at the orphanage,” Donnie noted.

Joseph continued that, “last year I decided to give the street because I realised there’s a lot of hunger on the street, so that was when we did 1,500. This year, I decided to champion in more and I spoke to Firm Health and GhanaWeb and they loved it. So here we are today.”

Dr. Sylvester Akpah of Firm Health Foundation, a partner of the Feeding with Dignity initiative, highlighted the nutritional standards put in place and explained why they chose to partner with Donsey Kitchen and Grills.

“As a foundation, which is health bias, we also believe in some social interventions. And the typical social intervention is this. Denis Omedi’s long road to redemption

0

Denis Omedi was once a prison officer Denis Omedi was once a prison officer

For years, Denis Omedi lived a life few professional footballers could relate to.

While others focused solely on training and matchdays, the Ugandan striker was splitting his time between hospital wards and football pitches.

After graduating in 2019, he joined the Uganda Prisons Service as a nurse, working full-time shifts and then rushing off to train, often exhausted but never discouraged.

Progress was slow and sometimes cruel. Omedi was not fast-tracked, not hyped, and not protected by shortcuts.

Meet Georgi Minoungou: The Burkina Faso forward who is blind in one eye

He simply stayed patient, trusting that persistence would eventually speak louder than age or circumstance.

That belief was tested repeatedly, but he never walked away from the game.

At 31, six years into his professional journey, Omedi finally arrived on the biggest stage of his career, the Africa Cup of Nations. His debut against Tunisia was not ceremonial.

Introduced just after the break, he seized the moment, scoring Uganda’s consolation goal and turning years of quiet sacrifice into a statement heard across the continent.

The Tunisia strike was only the beginning. Four days later, on Saturday, December 27, 2025, Omedi again stepped out of the shadows.

Brought on in the 65th minute, he became the difference-maker, showing maturity and clarity beyond the pressure of the moment.

His assist for Uche Ikpeazu’s equaliser earned Uganda their first point of the tournament and confirmed his growing importance. The point has also put the Cranes in a position to qualify for the knockout stages.

A win in their last group game against Nigeria could be enough to send them through. He played his club football with Rwanda’s APR in the 2024/25 season and was part of the Ugandan team that finished second in the 2026 CAF World Cup qualifiers.

Guinea votes in presidential election expected to cement Doumbouya’s rule

Guinea began voting on Sunday in a presidential election widely expected to hand Mamady Doumbouya, who seized power in a 2021 coup, a seven-year mandate, completing the West African nation’s transition back to civilian rule.

The former special forces commander, thought to be in his early 40s, faces eight other candidates in a fragmented field with no strong challenger. Ousted President Alpha Conde and longtime opposition leader Cellou Dalein Diallo remain in exile.

Polling stations opened at 7 a.m. (0700 GMT) in the capital Conakry, with only slight delays in some cases as small queues of people waited outside. Some voters described the election as a formality and the outcome as a foregone conclusion.

“The most important thing is that the country returns to normal. I’m pragmatic. I voted for the one who is in office and who ensures the continuity of the state,” shopkeeper Moussa Kaba told Reuters.

About 6.7 million people are registered to vote and polling stations were due to close at 6 p.m. (1800 GMT), with provisional results expected within 48 to 72 hours of polls closing.

RICH IN BAUXITE AND IRON ORE

Guinea holds the world’s largest bauxite reserves and the richest untapped iron ore deposit at Simandou, officially launched last month after years of delay.

Doumbouya has claimed credit for pushing the project forward and ensuring Guinea benefits from its output.

His government this year also revoked the licence of Emirates Global Aluminium’s subsidiary Guinea Alumina Corporation following a refinery dispute, transferring the unit’s assets to a state-owned firm.

The turn toward resource nationalism – echoed in Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger – has boosted his popularity, as has his relative youth in a country where the median age is about 19.

“For us young people, Doumbouya represents the opportunity to send the old political class into retirement,” said Mohamed Kaba, a mechanic in Conakry. “There is a lot of corruption right now, but I hope these things will be sorted out.”

DOUMBOUYA EXPECTED TO ENTRENCH POWER

If elected, Doumbouya “will likely utilise his position to further entrench his power and that of the military over Guinea, said Benedict Manzin, lead Middle East and Africa analyst at risk consultancy Sibylline.

“In particular, he is likely to position his allies and associates to benefit from the expected economic boom associated with the launch of production” at Simandou, Manzin added.

A transition charter adopted after the coup barred junta members from contesting elections. But in September, Guineans overwhelmingly backed a new constitution removing that clause, extending presidential terms to seven years, and creating a Senate.

Official results showed turnout in the ballot was 92%, though opposition figures disputed that.

Abdoulaye Barry, a civil engineer, told Reuters on Sunday that he would not vote, lamenting that the country was “allowing a man who swore not to run to do so.

OPPOSITION ACTIVITY RESTRICTED DURING CAMPAIGN

Political debate has been muted under Doumbouya. Civil society groups accuse his government of banning protests, curbing press freedom and restricting opposition activity.

The campaign period “has been severely restricted, marked by intimidation of opposition actors, apparently politically motivated enforced disappearances, and constraints on media freedom,” U.N. rights chief Volker Turk said on Friday. These conditions “risk undermining the credibility of the electoral process,” he added.

The government did not respond to a request for comment.

Doumbouya kept a low profile during the campaign, leaving officials and supporters to make his case.

At a closing rally on Thursday in Conakry, he skipped a speech, although he danced with his wife while Congolese star Koffi Olomide performed.

He wore a white baseball cap and a track jacket emblazoned with the name of his movement: “Generation for Modernity and Development.

Caicedo: We’re going to come back even stronger | News | Official Site

0

Moises Caicedo and his Blues team-mates are determined to bounce straight back from our loss to Aston Villa, to finish 2025 on a high in front of the Chelsea fans at Stamford Bridge.

The midfielder was part of the side which lined up against Aston Villa in our penultimate Premier League fixture of the year at the Bridge yesterday.

The Blues put in an impressive performance for an hour to dominate a visiting side which had recorded 10 consecutive victories across all competitions, taking the lead through Joao Pedro’s first-half goal from a Reece James corner.

However, we were unable to convert that into points, as Villa fought back and found the net twice in 20 minutes to leave Chelsea to reflect on a frustrating afternoon and disappointing 2-1 defeat.

‘It’s painful because we were controlling the game,’ admitted Caicedo. ‘The first half was so good and we started the second half well and could have won, even after the first goal they scored.

‘For sure we were frustrated because we were doing a great job, but when you do not concentrate for the whole game in the Premier League it’s going to happen.’

Caicedo and his fellow Blues won’t have to wait long for their chance to bounce back, though. We end the calendar year with another home game at Stamford Bridge in the Premier League, when we host Bournemouth on Tuesday evening.

It is an opportunity the Ecuadorian is determined to take advantage of, by showing the team has learned from this tough result.

‘We need to keep learning from this because we were there, up, but in the Premier League you need to be consistent to stay up,’ he said.

‘So we need to keep learning. This is not just a loss, it’s a chance to learn, and for sure we’re going to come back even stronger.

‘It’s important for us, for the fans, to end the year in a good way. So we’re just going to learn from this and focus on the next game because we want to give everything.’

Caicedo and Chelsea will be hoping to put that lesson into practice on the pitch and make it a happy new year for the Blues when Bournemouth come to west London on Tuesday 30 December, with kick-off at the Bridge at 7.30pm.

Pape Matar Sarr was an unused substitute as Senegal drew with the DR Congo on matchday two of the Africa Cup of Nations.

A winner of the continental tournament with his nation in 2021, Pape was named amongst Senegal’s substitutes for the second successive game as they faced their 2026 World Cup qualifying rivals once again.

A side they pipped to qualify for next year’s tournament in North America earlier this season with Pape scoring a dramatic late winner as Senegal came from 2-0 down to win 3-2 in the capital of Democratic Republic of Congo, the nations are now in the same AFCON group, but nothing could separate them this time in Tangier.

Muntaka inspects inner road projects in Asawase Constituency

0

The Member of Parliament (MP) for Asawase and Minister for the Interior, Alhaji Mohammed Muntaka Mubarak, has undertaken an inspection tour of ongoing inner road projects in the Asawase Constituency.

He was accompanied by the Asokore-Mampong Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Mr Ben Abdullah Alhassan, as they visited construction sites in the Sepe and Buoban enclaves, as well as parts of Asokore-Mampong.

The tour was aimed at obtaining first-hand information on the progress of work being carried out by contractors.

Alhaji Muntaka reiterated the government’s commitment to improving road infrastructure in the constituency, stressing that enhancing the living standards of the people through strategic investments in critical sectors, particularly roads, remains a top priority of President John Dramani Mahama’s administration.

He urged residents to maintain confidence in the government and assured them of his continued efforts to lobby for additional projects and initiatives to improve their quality of life.

For his part, the MCE pledged that the Assembly would ensure value for money by demanding high-quality work from contractors.

Mr Alhassan also commended the President for allocating a fair share of development projects to the Asawase Municipality, noting that the initiatives would transform the area and boost the local economy upon completion.

OSP’s preventive actions saved Ghana millions – Sammy Darko

0

The Director of Communications, Research and Strategy at the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP), Sammy Darko, has highlighted how the institution’s preventive mandate has saved Ghana millions of cedis by stopping potentially harmful deals and exposing corruption risks before they materialised.

According to Mr Darko, one of the most notable interventions was the OSP’s role in raising red flags over the Agyapa Royalties transaction.

He said the OSP’s early assessment identified serious corruption risks in the deal, leading to its suspension and ultimately protecting the state from long-term financial losses.

“Those concerns stopped a bad deal that could have cost the country far more in the long run. That money stayed with Ghana, not private interests,” he stated.

Mr Darko also pointed to the planned sale of the Tema Oil Refinery (TOR) as another example of the OSP’s preventive impact.

He explained that the Office flagged corruption risks in a proposed partnership arrangement, which subsequently did not go through.

“Without that intervention, a key state asset would likely have been lost,” he noted, stressing that prevention remains cheaper and more effective than prosecution after the fact.

Additionally, Mr Darko said the OSP has helped plug financial leakages by uncovering ghost names on public payrolls, even under systems that included Ghana Card verification.

He explained that these were individuals who were being paid despite not existing or no longer being in active service.

“Removing them stopped steady leaks of public funds,” he said, adding that such actions underscore the importance of the OSP’s preventive powers in safeguarding public resources.

Nigeria held off a late Tunisia fightback to reach the last 16 of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) in Morocco.

The Super Eagles led the Group C encounter in Fes 3-0 with 17 minutes remaining through goals from Victor Osimhen, Wilfred Ndidi and Ademola Lookman before Montassar Talbi’s header from a Hannibal Mejbri free-kick pulled one back for the North Africans.

Tunisia were then given a late penalty, following a video assistant referee (VAR) review, for a handball by Bright Osayi-Samuel and Ali Abdi converted in the 87th minute to set up a frantic finale.

The Carthage Eagles came close to a dramatic equaliser in stoppage time when captain Ferjani Sassi headed narrowly wide, and there was still time for Ismael Gharbi to bobble a volley past the post.

Victory means three-time Afcon winners Nigeria move on to six points and are guaranteed top spot in Group C with a game to spare, and will face a third-placed side from Group A, B or F in the next round.

Tunisia remain on three points with Uganda and Tanzania on one point apiece after the East African rivals drew 1-1 earlier on Saturday.

The Super Eagles remain in Fes to play Uganda on Tuesday (16:00 GMT), with Tunisia returning to Rabat to face Tanzania at the same time.

Nigeria, Afcon runners-up in 2023, join Egypt as the second side through to the knockout stage, but both coach Eric Chelle and their supporters will feel relieved after what looked set to be a comfortable last quarter of an hour turned into a nervy finish.

Both sides had won their opener in Morocco, with Tunisia cruising past Uganda and Nigeria edging past the Tanzanians in a hard-fought encounter.

Osimhen had a goal ruled out for offside before the Super Eagles striker opened the scoring on the stroke of half-time, expertly guiding a header between two Tunisian defenders and into the bottom-right corner from Lookman’s inviting left-wing cross.

The Super Eagles doubled their advantage early in the second half, as Ndidi picked a good time to score his first international goal when he rose highest to power home a header from Lookman’s corner.

Osimhen teed up former England youth international Lookman for the third, but Talbi steered his header past Nigeria goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali to reduce the deficit.

Tunisia were handed a lifeline when a looping cross dropped onto the forearm of Osayi-Samuel, and Malian referee Boubou Traore awarded a spot-kick after being sent to his pitchside monitor by VAR.

Abdi smashed home, but the 2004 champions ultimately fell short of a stirring comeback.

Tunisia remain well placed to join the West Africans in the next round, with a draw against Tanzania enough to progress – and their manager Sami Trabelsi will be keen to avoid a repeat of the 2013 Afcon, when a group-stage exit ultimately led to his resignation as coach.

One defender among few positives in home defeat

0

Chelsea suffered a 2-1 home defeat to Aston Villa on Saturday, as they dropped down to fifth in the Premier League table.

Similar to the previous game at St. James’ Park, it was a game of two halves, but this time, Chelsea were on the losing end.

It looked very promising for the hosts in the first half at Stamford Bridge. They took the lead in the 37th minute from Reece James’ corner kick.

It was Chelsea’s 11th set-piece goal of the season, the joint second-highest in the league.

Joao Pedro

IMAGO / Action Plus

Chelsea created a lot of chances in the first period, and they paid the price for failing to capitalise on them.

Unai Emery’s triple substitutions just before the hour mark proved effective, especially the introduction of striker Ollie Watkins.

It took the England international just a couple of minutes to level the score from close range after receiving a beautiful vertical pass from Morgan Rogers.

After limiting the visitors to zero shot attempts, Chelsea struggled to contain the inspired Villa side in the second half.

In the 84th minute, Villa paid Chelsea back with their own corner-kick goal, and it was Watkins again who delivered the blow.

Ollie Watkins

IMAGO / Sportimage

Chelsea made a late push in the game, but did not manage to register any shots on target in the second half.

The defeat means third-placed Villa have widened the gap to Chelsea, who dropped down to fifth, to 10 points.

Depending on the result between Sunderland and Leeds United on Sunday, Chelsea could be sixth when they host Bournemouth for another Premier League bout on Tuesday.

Ghana detains 141 Nigerians in cybercrime crackdown

0

Ghanaian authorities have detained 141 individuals, largely believed to be Nigerian nationals, in a coordinated operation targeting organised cybercrime networks operating in the country.

The arrests, made on December 27, focused on suburbs of Accra, including Tabora and Lashibi, following intelligence-led investigations, which was led by the Cyber Security Authority in partnership with the Ghana Police Service, National Security and the Ghana Immigration Service.

Minister for Communications, Digital Technology and Innovations, Samuel Nartey George, confirmed that 100 suspects were detained in Tabora and 41 in Lashibi. He explained that intelligence-led surveillance had identified the two areas as hubs for cybercrime activity.

“The raids were based on intelligence operations that pointed to organised networks operating from these communities,” he said.

Investigators revealed that a Ghanaian landlord was among those taken into custody for allegedly accommodating around 100 of the suspects in Tabora. Authorities believe that the landlord’s property served as a base for operations involving mobile money fraud, business email compromise and other online scams. Security officials seized 38 laptops and approximately 150 mobile phones during the raids, which are now undergoing forensic analysis.

Preliminary findings suggest that the suspects were part of coordinated groups using residential properties to conceal their activities. Officials said the discovery highlights how cybercrime networks exploit local housing arrangements to evade detection.

“We are not only dealing with individuals but with systems that enable them,” a senior security source noted, adding that investigations will extend to landlords and property managers suspected of knowingly facilitating such activities.
The Cyber Security Authority emphasised that prosecutions will follow once forensic examinations are complete.
“All suspects found culpable will be prosecuted in line with Ghanaian law,” the agency stated.

Galamsey cuts off cocoa farms in Mfantseman, farmers suffer heavy losses

0

Cocoa farmers in Mfantseman, located in the Upper Denkyira East Municipality of the Central Region, are facing severe challenges as illegal mining activities have destroyed access routes to their farms, leaving large quantities of cocoa uncollected and stranded.

The destruction caused by unregulated mining operations has made it nearly impossible for farmers to reach their farms or transport harvested produce, resulting in significant financial losses.

Farmers say deep trenches and open pits dug by illegal miners have rendered farm roads unsafe and unusable for over a year.

In the past, cocoa was transported manually with the help of labourers, but many young people have since abandoned farming for galamsey.

Tricycles later became the preferred means of transporting produce, but those too can no longer access the farms due to the extensive damage to the road network.

Beyond the loss of income, farmers say their personal safety is now at serious risk. Accessing farms on foot requires navigating narrow paths surrounded by uncovered pits, raising fears of fatal accidents.

Local authorities report that between January and August this year, at least 27 people died after falling into abandoned galamsey pits in the municipality, heightening anxiety among residents.

The affected farmers are questioning the absence of a major security operation in Mfantseman, despite similar crackdowns on illegal mining in other areas.

They are appealing for immediate government action to halt galamsey activities and safeguard cocoa farms. Residents have also raised health concerns, alleging that some abandoned pits are being used as refuse dumps and places of convenience, increasing the risk of disease outbreaks.

Meanwhile, neighbouring Upper Denkyira West District continues to battle similar challenges, with health authorities warning that illegal mining has destroyed vast farmlands and polluted water bodies across the Denkyira enclave.

The Paramount Chief of Denkyira, Odeefour Boampensem IV, has called on the government to intensify efforts to stop illegal mining and restore degraded lands.

Prayers resume at Ho Central Mosque as Police tighten security

0

Prayers have resumed at the Ho Central Mosque in the Volta Regional capital under heavy police protection, a day after a shooting incident at the facility left 10 worshippers seriously injured and heightened security concerns in the area.

Despite the attack on Friday, December 26, Muslim faithful returned to the mosque on Saturday to observe their daily prayers, as security personnel maintained a strong presence in and around the premises to forestall any further violence or possible reprisals.

A visit by Channel One News on the afternoon of Saturday, December 28, showed calm at the mosque, with worshippers going about their prayers amid visible police patrols. Law enforcement officers were stationed at strategic points to reassure the community and prevent disturbances.

The shooting incident occurred when masked assailants reportedly stormed the mosque during prayers and opened fire, injuring 10 people. Two of the victims were said to be in critical condition and are currently receiving medical care.

Preliminary investigations indicate that the attack may be linked to a long-running leadership dispute over the position of Chief Imam, a conflict that has divided the Muslim community in Ho for several years despite multiple mediation efforts.

In response, the Volta Regional Police Command has launched an intensive manhunt for the main suspects behind the attack. While 15 individuals have been arrested to assist with investigations, police say the principal perpetrators are still at large.

The Volta Regional Police Public Relations Officer, Chief Inspector Francis Gomado, has assured residents that investigations are progressing and that measures are being taken to address both the criminal aspects of the case and the underlying causes of the violence.

Latvian authorities respond to Ghana’s request on Nana Agyei investigations

The Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has announced that Latvian authorities have agreed to receive a Ghanaian delegation as part of ongoing efforts to seek justice for the late Nana Agyei Ahyia, an 18-year-old Ghanaian student who died in Latvia under controversial circumstances.

The update follows sustained diplomatic engagements by the government to address concerns raised by the family of the deceased, who dispute Latvian authorities’ claim that Nana Agyei died by suicide. The family maintains that their son was racially abused and later murdered by a group of individuals.

Providing an update in a Facebook post on Saturday, December 27, 2025, Mr Ablakwa disclosed that the Latvian Foreign Ministry has officially responded to his request for cooperation.

“On the matter of ongoing investigations and justice for Nana Agyei, I can confirm that the Latvian Foreign Ministry has officially responded to my request and indicated that Latvian authorities shall be ready to receive my delegation in Riga, Latvia on the 20th of January, 2026,” he stated.

He noted that the visit will form part of Ghana’s pursuit of truth and justice in the case and pledged to keep the public informed throughout the process.

“Looking forward to embarking on this important journey in the pursuit of truth and justice. I promised regular updates in the interest of transparency, accountability and justice — I shall continue to do just that,” he added.

Mr Ablakwa reiterated the Mahama administration’s commitment to protecting the rights and dignity of Ghanaians, both at home and abroad.

“As I have reiterated, the Mahama administration values every Ghanaian life either at home or abroad; we are prepared to do whatever it takes to safeguard the dignity of all Ghanaians,” he said.

Ayden Heaven: Manchester United defender will not switch to Ghana from England

0

Heaven has played for England at various age groups.

He suffered an ankle injury playing for the Under-20s against Switzerland in October, was replaced at half-time and was not selected for November’s match against Japan.

Heaven made two substitute appearances for United in the Premier League this season before starting against West Ham on 4 December in the centre of a three-man defence.

He was booked after eight minutes and taken off at half-time, but has started all four matches since and improved significantly in each.

He was excellent in the 2-1 defeat at Aston Villa on 21 December and was man of the match in the 1-0 victory over Newcastle on Friday, when United kept only their second clean sheet of the season.

Manager Ruben Amorim said: “I am really pleased with Ayden. You can feel that he is improving every game.

“He is young, but you can feel that he has a good game, slows the thinking and improves during the game.

“He trained really well and, if he continues to play like that, it is going to be really hard to take his place.”

Sustained funding key to TOR’s long-term operations – COPEC

0

The Executive Secretary of the Chamber of Petroleum Consumers (COPEC), Duncan Amoah, has cautioned that sustained financial support will be critical to ensure the Tema Oil Refinery’s long-term operations.

Speaking on Channel One News on Saturday, December 27, he commended the current management of TOR for overseeing the restart of operations after years of inactivity, describing the development as encouraging for Ghana’s downstream petroleum sector.

“We should commend the current management for this. We should encourage the Finance Ministry and the Bank of Ghana to go in there with the requisite investment, so that TOR does not process the cargo they have currently, and then, because they are unable to get revolving cargo in the coming days, a few months down the line, we will stop,” he said.

COPEC stressed that while the restart of refining activities was good news, more work remained to be done to guarantee sustainability, particularly in securing a consistent crude oil supply through adequate financing.

“I think the resumption is good news, but a lot more work will need to be done at this point for sustainability to be guaranteed,” he added.

The Tema Oil Refinery recently restarted crude oil refining operations following the successful completion of extensive Turnaround Maintenance (TAM) works on its Crude Distillation Unit.

According to TOR, the maintenance works were carried out between August 1 and October 30, 2025, and were completed within schedule, meeting international engineering, safety and operational standards.

Bank of Ghana Exits Small Scale Gold Trading

Bank of Ghana Exits Small Scale Gold Trading
Bank Of Ghana

The Bank of Ghana (BoG) will stop engaging in the small scale gold trading business from January 1, 2026, marking a significant shift in the country’s gold sector operations.

Governor Dr Johnson Asiama submitted a proposal to the BoG board in November 2025 to exit the Artisanal Small Scale Gold Mining (ASGM) gold trading segment under the Domestic Gold Purchase Programme (DGPP), and the proposal received approval. The central bank will continue its broader DGPP operations while fully transferring the small scale segment to the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod).

Sources say the move will allow the Bank of Ghana to focus on other segments of the DGPP as well as its core mandate of inflation targeting and price stability. Officials emphasized the decision arose from strategic restructuring rather than external criticism.

The Finance Minister, Dr Ato Forson, advanced approximately 4.4 billion cedis to GoldBod in the 2025 Budget, a move expected to enable GoldBod to completely assume operations while the central bank no longer incurs related costs starting next year. In 2026, GoldBod will control the entire gold supply chain and sell the gold proceeds in US dollars to the Bank of Ghana in exchange for cedis for subsequent gold purchases.

The transition comes amid debate over financial performance of the gold programme. The International Monetary Fund (IMF), in its fifth staff review report, noted that losses from artisanal and small scale gold transactions under the Gold for Reserves programme reached $214 million within the first nine months of 2025.

However, a senior official at the bank described the IMF’s opinion as not accurate, noting that the figures are not audited and involve dynamic gold and foreign exchange markets. The Bank of Ghana has described the exposure loss linked to its relationship with GoldBod as premature, arguing that it has not published its financials and any loss or gain cannot be solely attributed to GoldBod exposure but rather to market conditions.

GoldBod Chief Executive Officer Sammy Gyamfi stated the board has made no losses and recorded profits in 2025, with unaudited financial statements showing an expected income surplus of not less than 600 million cedis. He explained that GoldBod’s role in 2025 was limited to buying gold locally, testing its quality, and exporting it for the Bank of Ghana, while the sale and trading of the gold remained the central bank’s sole responsibility.

The Ghana Gold Board was established under the Ghana Gold Board Act, 2025 (Act 1140), which was assented to on April 2, 2025. The legislation granted GoldBod exclusive authority to buy, sell, weigh, grade, assay, value, and export gold and other precious minerals from artisanal and small scale operations. The Act replaced the Precious Minerals Marketing Company and introduced a robust licensing regime prioritizing Ghanaian companies and citizens while barring foreign nationals from local gold trading.

Financial sector stakeholders are monitoring the transition closely as Ghana restructures its gold value chain while aligning central bank priorities with broader economic objectives.

US Remains Safe Haven Despite Dollar Weakness, Analysts Note

US Remains Safe Haven Despite Dollar Weakness, Analysts Note

Despite growing discussion about a weakening dollar and shifting global power dynamics, the United States continues to attract substantial foreign investment from wealthy individuals and institutions in developing countries and emerging economies.

Market data from the United States Department of Treasury shows that after a brief selloff in April 2025 during the so called Liberation Day tariff announcement, foreign investors quickly returned to American assets. Treasury International Capital data reveals foreign residents increased their holdings of long term US securities with net purchases of $192.3 billion in June 2025 and $78.8 billion in July 2025.

Liberation Day on April 2, 2025, marked President Donald Trump’s announcement of sweeping tariffs that were more severe than investors expected, triggering immediate market turbulence. The S&P 500 dropped more than 12 percent in the week following the announcement, while US Treasury bonds and the dollar tumbled simultaneously, an unusual dislocation that temporarily shook confidence in America’s safe haven status.

However, the panic proved short lived. Data from Ned Davis Research shows foreign investors allocated more than 30 percent of their US financial assets to equities from the start of 2025 through June, near record highs and well above the long term average of about 19 percent. This suggests global capital continues viewing US markets as the preferred destination despite tariff uncertainty.

Several factors explain the sustained appeal of American investments for wealthy individuals from emerging and developing economies. First, a depreciating dollar actually works in favor of foreign investors. When the dollar weakens, investors from Africa, Asia or Latin America can buy more US assets with their local currencies. American stocks, bonds and companies become relatively cheaper in foreign currency terms.

The weaker dollar also boosts the US economy by making American exports more competitive globally, supporting growth and corporate profits. This feeds back into stronger investment returns for shareholders. The pattern mirrors dynamics seen in the early 2000s when dollar weakness coincided with strong gains for international investors in US markets.

Two main motivations drive foreign money into the United States, according to market observers. The first is growth. Investors want exposure to America’s technology and artificial intelligence boom. Companies like Nvidia have delivered exceptional returns to early investors, and the AI investment wave continues to attract global capital seeking participation in transformative technologies.

The second motivation is yield. Even with global uncertainty, US financial markets continue to offer higher and more reliable returns than many other regions. For investors seeking both income and safety, that combination remains compelling. The S&P 500 returned more than 18 percent in 2025 through December 11 and set a record high that day, marking the third consecutive year of strong returns.

While the April tariff announcement initially sparked concerns about potential recession and spiking inflation, the US economy has proven resilient. For companies in the S&P 500, analysts expect earnings per share to rise 14.5 percent in 2026, according to FactSet, representing an acceleration from the 12.1 percent growth estimated for 2025.

Interestingly, Trump administration policies intended to put America First have yielded unexpected returns in developing economies. Emerging market government bonds gained 15 percent through September 30, while equities rose more than 25 percent over the same period, based on benchmark indices from JPMorgan and MSCI. This diversification drive accelerated with the Liberation Day tariff announcements as investors sought to spread risk beyond American assets.

Nevertheless, foreign investors have maintained substantial exposure to US equities throughout this turbulence. Rather than abandoning American markets, international capital appears to be balancing portfolios, maintaining strong US positions while also increasing emerging market allocations.

Gold has emerged as an alternative beneficiary of uncertainty. Gold prices added 7.7 percent since April 2 and gained 28 percent for 2025 overall through mid year, according to Bloomberg data. Unlike fixed income instruments, gold offers no yield but is viewed by some as a relatively attractive safe haven asset amid concerns that tariffs could support inflation while Treasury supply increases to fund budget deficits.

The dollar itself has stabilized after its sharp spring decline. While remaining weaker than at the start of the year, the greenback’s stability has reduced one of the biggest tailwinds for international equities, since currency gains accounted for much of their early 2025 rally.

International equity markets also performed strongly in 2025. Korea’s KOSPI enjoyed its biggest gain in more than two decades, driven by technology companies including Samsung and SK Hynix surging amid artificial intelligence investment. Japan’s Nikkei 225 posted double digit gains for a third straight year. European markets rallied, with Germany’s DAX boosted by government plans to increase infrastructure and defense spending.

Despite this international outperformance, global capital continues viewing the US as offering the deepest, most liquid and most trusted markets in the world. The resilience of foreign inflows into American assets, even during periods of policy uncertainty and tariff turbulence, underscores the durability of the dollar’s role in the global financial system.

Market analysts caution that trade policy developments continue to evolve, and financial outlooks must incorporate numerous factors beyond tariffs, including fiscal and monetary policy trends, technological innovation, asset valuations and investor positioning. The Supreme Court is currently weighing the legality of Trump’s tariff authority, adding another layer of uncertainty.

For wealthy individuals in emerging economies seeking to preserve and grow capital, the evidence suggests that despite short term volatility and shifting global dynamics, American financial markets retain fundamental advantages that continue attracting substantial international investment flows.

Mahama steering Ghana in the right direction

0

The Dormaahene, Osagyefo Oseadeeyo Dr. Agyemang Badu II, has commended President John Dramani Mahama’s administration, describing the country as moving in the right direction under his leadership.

In a viral video cited by Citi news on X on Sunday, December 28, the traditional leader vowed not to ever be affiliated to the NDC for a reason personal to him but underscored the right policies put in place by President Mahama to reset the country.

“I will never support NDC, I am not affiliated to the NDC and I will not support them till I die, but I have been an NPP member before. But where President Mahama is governing the country, anyone that says it is not in a straight direction is a liar, “he said.

He also highlighted the country’s economic performance, noting that the cedi-dollar exchange rate currently stands at GH¢11.49, signaling relative stability in the foreign exchange market since the president took office.

Among other achievements made by President Mahama in his first 11 months in office is directing the
Ministry of Finance to release GH¢1 billion to contractors owed by the state since 2017, as part of efforts to clear longstanding debts and stimulate economic activity.

The incident occurred at Dalogu Yili, a suburb of Tamale, and was reported to the police at about 9:00 a.m. on December 26.

The suspect was arrested and handed over to the Regional Criminal Investigations Department (CID) for further investigations, while the victim was safely reunited with her parents.
