Former Asante Kotoko midfielder Fabio Gama has shared his thoughts on the upcoming Super Clash between his former club and arch-rivals Hearts of Oak, calling the match one of the most intense and unique derbies he’s ever experienced.

Speaking to Sir Martin on GhanaSportsPage.com, the Brazilian playmaker, who became a fan favorite during his time in Kumasi, reflected on what makes the Hearts-Kotoko rivalry so iconic.

“Rivalry makes this derby so special,” Gama said. “Yeah, they have a good team and they can win that game. They just have to play their football and fight hard.” he told Ghanasportspage.com.

They two most glamorous clubs lock horns in their final meeting of the season as the league enters the final stages. 

Kotoko have won the last three matches between the two. 

The Porcupines are in the title race and would need a win to close in on Bibiani Golds Stars. Meanwhile, Hearts of Oak who are winless in their last four games, are aiming for a win to get back to winning ways.

Dambai (O/R), May 1, GNA – Mr. Safo Nketia, the Municipal Chief Executive of Krachi East (MCE), has commended workers in the Municipality for their invaluable contributions to the area’s development.

In a statement issued by the office of the MCE to commemorate May Day and copied to the Ghana News Agency (GNA), it indicated that great nations of today had achieved successes as a result of hardwork and dedication of workers to duty.

‘All over the world, the great nations we see and hear of today achieved such a milestone greatly as a result of work done by her citizens and we in Krachi East must continue to pay our dues towards our nation’s development through hard work in all our field of endeavours’.

It also commended John Dramani Mahama’s government for bold implementation of National Apprenticeship Programme, Ghana Medical Trust Fund, Adwuma-Wura Programme, Free Sanitary Pad and other policies.

The statement acknowledged the invaluable contributions of workers to the community’s development and well-being, describing their hard work as instrumental in shaping the Municipality’s progress.

The statement praised healthcare workers, security agencies, media personnel, and essential service providers for their dedication and hard work.

Remarks by politicians undermine trust in judiciary

Member of Parliament for Afigya Kwabre North, Collins Adomako-Mensah, has cautioned political actors to exercise restraint in their public commentary regarding judicial appointments, warning that previous political statements could undermine public trust in the impartiality of the judiciary.

Speaking on Channel One TV’s Breakfast Daily on Thursday, May 1, the Afigya Kwabre North MP stated that the politicisation of judicial appointments, especially comments made by political figures while in or out of power, often shapes how the public perceives such decisions.

His remarks come in the wake of President John Dramani Mahama’s nomination of seven Court of Appeal judges to the Supreme Court. The appointments, which fall under Article 144(2) of the 1992 Constitution, are currently awaiting parliamentary approval.

The nominees are Justices Sir Dennis Dominic Adjei, Gbiel Simon Suurbaareh, Senyo Dzamefe, Kweku Tawiah Ackaah-Boafo, Philip Bright Mensah, Janapare Bartels-Kodwo, and Hafisata Amaleboba.

According to Adomako-Mensah, public concerns surrounding the nominations, particularly the perception that they are politically motivated, stem from prior comments made by President Mahama, who once urged NDC-affiliated lawyers to pursue judicial positions as a way to “balance” the bench.

“The only problem we have here is the politicisation of the comments both political parties have made in the past with regards to appointments to the bench. President Mahama was speaking to NDC lawyers at a conference when he advised them to upgrade themselves from just being lawyers to the bench, which then will allow them to be considered for the Supreme Court to balance the bench.”Adomako-Mensah said.

He noted that because of these earlier statements, any new nominations from the Mahama-led administration, particularly so soon into his current term, are likely to be interpreted through a partisan lens.

“If, within the first four months, you begin to nominate judges to the bench, the obvious characterisation that anybody will give to this appointment is that the balancing effect he promised has started.

“I will be shocked if anybody has a problem with Dennis Adjei’s appointment, but because of the comment made by the president before, everybody will see all these seven judges as NDC-affiliated.

“Let us be mindful of our comments as politicians, whether we are in opposition or government, otherwise you might be doing the right thing, but the interpretation by the ordinary Ghanaians will be that the Excellency has just started what he promised the NDC lawyers. This may be a balancing of the bench, but I am hoping that is not it.” he warned.

In June 2024, Davido shut down Lagos in grand style for his traditional wedding to Chioma.

The ceremony was a star-studded affair, drawing an elite crowd, from top-tier entertainers and public figures to governors, monarchs, senators, billionaires, and politicians.

It wasn’t just a wedding; it was an event etched into the city’s memory.

The couple officially tied the knot on June 25, 2024, and are now set to follow it up with a white wedding in Miami, Florida, come August 2025.

According to the statement, the Chairman’s brief departure from the tour is to enable him to attend to “some pressing matters.”

“The New Patriotic Party wishes to inform all members and the public that the National Chairman has taken a short break from the ongoing nationwide ‘Thank You’ tour to attend to some pressing matters,” the statement read.

The party, however, assured the public of the National Chairman’s continued commitment to the tour, which aims to express gratitude to voters, party supporters, and members for their support during the 2024 general elections.

“The National Chairman remains fully committed to the tour and will rejoin the team in due course. The Party appreciates all members’ continued support, enthusiasm, unwavering commitment, and cooperation,” the statement concluded.

As part of the tour, the party’s leadership, led by former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, is expected to engage with members and supporters while also fostering unity in an effort to position the party as a strong contender for the 2028 elections.

The Ghana Union of Traders Association (GUTA) has issued a clarion call to the country’s labour force, urging them to take proactive steps toward regenerating employment and contributing meaningfully to national development.

This appeal comes as Ghana marks its 2025 May Day celebration on Thursday, May 1, 2025, to honour the contributions and achievements of workers across the nation.

Speaking in an interview with GhanaWeb Business as part of this year’s celebration, the President of GUTA, Dr Joseph Obeng, stressed the need for a renewed mindset focused on productivity and job creation.

“I urge the labour force to rethink and find innovative ways to regenerate employment for the nation. If the labour force is well-motivated and becomes more productive, it can play a critical role in generating jobs,” he stated.

Dr Obeng also called on the government to implement supportive policies that empower workers to be more entrepreneurial and innovative.

“Government should do everything possible to motivate the labour force and support initiatives that enable them to drive job creation,” he added.

May Day is internationally recognised as a day to celebrate and acknowledge the efforts of workers. It also serves as a platform for trade unions to engage with governments on critical issues such as wages, job security, and workplace safety.

The General Secretary of the Referees Association of Ghana (RAG), Alex Anning, has shed light on the growing financial challenges faced by Ghanaian match officials, revealing that referees earn GH¢1,100 per game but have gone unpaid for over five months.

This revelation comes amidst rising tension among referees, following reports of a statement announcing their intention to boycott the remainder of the league season.

While the Referees Association of Ghana have since denied officially releasing the statement, the core issue remains unresolved: match officials are still owed 21 weeks of unpaid allowances.

The delays have caused mounting frustration among referees, many of whom are struggling to cover personal expenses while continuing to officiate matches across the country.

Speaking to Sporty FM, Anning stated that the situation has reached a breaking point, and they plan to escalate the matter to the Minister of Sports and Recreation.

“Referees are paid GH¢1,100 per game. We’ve had numerous discussions with the GFA over delayed payments, and it’s not working. It seems they don’t understand us, which is why we’re taking the issue to the Sports Minister,” he said.

Anning further revealed that referees have only been paid for 8 out of the 29 weeks of work, leaving 21 weeks of unpaid wages spanning the Premier League, FA Cup, Division One, and Women’s League.

“All Ghana Premier League referees have been affected by the delayed payment for 21 weeks. Referees who officiated the FA Cup, Division One League, and the Women’s League are also owed. We’ve played 29 weeks in the GPL, but we have been paid for only eight weeks, leaving 21 weeks of outstanding payments,” he added.

During a recent appearance on ChannelOne TV, seasoned journalist and political analyst Elvis Darko voiced strong reservations about the politicization of judicial appointments in Ghana.

His remarks come in light of President John Dramani Mahama’s nomination of seven individuals to the Supreme Court.

Darko pointed to what he sees as a contradiction in the National Democratic Congress’s (NDC) stance on court appointments.

He noted that while the party, during its time in opposition, heavily criticized former President Nana Akufo-Addo for allegedly overloading the judiciary with loyalists, it now appears to be doing the same.

He questioned the logic behind appointing a large number of justices after previously claiming that the court was already overstaffed due to appointments made by the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

In his view, such decisions expose political double standards and give critics ample grounds to challenge the consistency of government policies.

Darko also cautioned against labeling newly appointed judges as political affiliates based solely on who selected them.

He warned that qualified and impartial individuals risk being seen through a partisan lens simply because of past statements made by political leaders.

He emphasized that such labeling undermines public trust in the judiciary and erodes confidence in the country’s democratic institutions.

Rather than approaching national matters from a partisan standpoint, he urged leaders to prioritize objective analysis and work toward national unity.

While critical of the political messaging surrounding the appointments, Darko expressed support for the decision to expand the bench.

He linked this need to concerns previously raised by Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo, who had called for more justices to address the significant backlog of cases at the Supreme Court.

According to Darko, the Chief Justice had documented the growing pressure on the judiciary, noting that even if every Supreme Court judge sat daily, the volume of unresolved cases would remain overwhelming.

He acknowledged that the Chief Justice’s argument was aimed at improving judicial efficiency and restoring public trust in the legal system.

However, he pointed out that this initiative had faced legal opposition.

Professor Kwaku Asare, also known as Kwaku Azar, had filed for the Chief Justice’s removal—not on the grounds of requesting more judges, but rather over procedural concerns regarding how the request was submitted to the presidency.

Darko acknowledged the legitimacy of questioning the process but argued that procedural flaws should not overshadow the substance of the Chief Justice’s concerns.

He suggested that rather than removing her from office, the appropriate course of action might be to address and correct the procedural missteps.

In analyzing the broader issue, Darko stressed that the nature of Ghana’s constitutional framework plays a key role.

Since all matters of constitutional interpretation go directly to the Supreme Court without first passing through the lower courts, the workload placed on the highest court is immense.

He noted that this situation stems from Ghana’s hybrid constitutional structure, which often lacks clear guidelines for interpreting certain provisions.

As a result, the Supreme Court is burdened with a wide range of complex and sensitive cases.

Darko emphasized the need for consistency in governance and accountability in political discourse.

He argued that political leaders must avoid making statements that later contradict their own actions when in power.

He said, “When you make political comments about things like that and now you are the one appointing people, then you give us the public the opportunity to criticize you that you are the same person who was criticizing this in the past. Why are you doing same now? So it’s like you are falling on your own dagger.”

INTERPOL has uncovered a major vehicle trafficking network operating across West Africa, identifying nearly 150 stolen vehicles and seizing over 75 during a crackdown spanning 12 countries.

The two-week operation, dubbed “Safe Wheels,” was led by INTERPOL in collaboration with security agencies in Ghana, Nigeria, and ten other West African nations.

Conducted from March 17 to 30, 2025, the operation launched 18 investigations and exposed two organised crime syndicates involved in the cross-border smuggling of stolen cars.

Many of the stolen vehicles were trafficked from Canada, while others were traced to thefts reported in France, Germany, and the Netherlands.

In Nigeria, the Nigerian Customs Service (NCS) made a significant discovery at the Lagos port, where six stolen Toyota and Lexus vehicles were found hidden inside shipping containers.

INTERPOL’s global database confirmed all six vehicles had been stolen in Canada earlier this year. Some bore visible signs of forced entry, indicating possible links to professional auto theft rings.

In Ghana and other participating countries, security forces maintained an average of 46 checkpoints per day, inspecting over 12,600 vehicles during the operation. Officers flagged several popular brands, including Toyota, Peugeot, and Honda.

The Stolen Motor Vehicle (SMV) database, managed by INTERPOL, played a crucial role in the detection process, enabling real-time vehicle checks by officers across the organization’s 196 member countries.

David Caunter, INTERPOL’s Director of Organised and Emerging Crime, highlighted the broader threat posed by vehicle theft.

“Each year, hundreds of thousands of vehicles are stolen around the world, yet the initial theft is often only the beginning of a vehicle’s journey into the global criminal underworld.”

“Stolen vehicles are trafficked across the globe, traded for drugs and other illicit commodities, enriching organized crime groups and even terrorists,” he stated.

The operation is part of Project Drive Out, a joint initiative between INTERPOL and the Government of Canada aimed at disrupting international vehicle smuggling and the illegal trade in car parts. The project receives Canadian funding and technical assistance.

To support the operation, INTERPOL deployed nine experts from its SMV Task Force to collaborate with security forces in Benin, Cabo Verde, Gambia, Ghana, Nigeria, and Togo.

“On the contrary, we walk into the mud to deal with the person doing the mud-slinging and I am prepared to walk into the mud with A Plus,” he warned.

Dr. Ayine further challenged A Plus to appear before the media and publicly respond to the claims surrounding his alleged role in the NSS ghost names saga.

“What I have about him and the National Service scandal—he should come and say. I’m challenging him to come and tell the media and stop hiding behind social media to make baseless allegations against people who have worked hard to earn a reputation,” he added.

The National Coordinator for the District Road Improvement Programme (DRIP), Nii Lantey Vanderpuye, has called on politicians to embrace a proactive manner to indicate their interest in tackling issues of public interest over their personal gains as a way to cleanse themselves and the political system of corrupt practices, arguing that growing public distrust has undermined Ghana’s democracy and governance structures.

Speaking on Channel One TV’s Breakfast Daily on Thursday, May 1, Vanderpuye urged political actors to reflect on their actions and the growing perception of corruption within the political space, stressing that public confidence in governance is deteriorating.

“I think there must be a time to avoid the situation whereby people lose credibility in the political system and the democratic system, which will give room for some unwanted and some unwarranted, unnecessary adversaries,” he stated.

He highlighted that the growing disillusionment among citizens was not only a threat to democratic stability but could invite disruptive forces if politicians did not act to restore faith in the system.

“It is time for us to sanitise ourselves and the system, to get people to have a different perception about us who are on the field and within the political space. We have to know that you get so many opportunities in political office to advance your life. You need not get corrupted to be able to get those things that you need,” Vanderpuye said.

His comments follow a revelation by the Attorney General and Minister for Justice, Dr. Dominic Ayine, that Ghana Water Limited (GWL) had paid a monthly amount of GHS1.5 million to the former Director-General of the National Signals Bureau, Kwabena Adu Boahen, an arrangement that became central to his recent arrest.

According to Dr. Ayine, the payments were made under a contract between GWL and the former Bureau of National Communications (now the National Signals Bureau) for secure internet services, raising questions about transparency and accountability in public contracts.

Though Vanderpuye did not directly comment on the ongoing investigation, his remarks appeared to respond to the broader wave of public concern following the exposé.

Interpol has uncovered a vehicle trafficking network operating across West Africa Interpol has uncovered a vehicle trafficking network operating across West Africa

INTERPOL has uncovered a major vehicle trafficking network operating across West Africa, identifying nearly 150 stolen vehicles and seizing over 75 during a crackdown spanning 12 countries.

The two-week operation, dubbed “Safe Wheels,” was led by INTERPOL in collaboration with security agencies in Ghana, Nigeria, and ten other West African nations.

Conducted from March 17 to 30, 2025, the operation launched 18 investigations and exposed two organised crime syndicates involved in the cross-border smuggling of stolen cars.

Many of the stolen vehicles were trafficked from Canada, while others were traced to thefts reported in France, Germany, and the Netherlands.

In Nigeria, the Nigerian Customs Service (NCS) made a significant discovery at the Lagos port, where six stolen Toyota and Lexus vehicles were found hidden inside shipping containers.

INTERPOL’s global database confirmed all six vehicles had been stolen in Canada earlier this year. Some bore visible signs of forced entry, indicating possible links to professional auto theft rings.

In Ghana and other participating countries, security forces maintained an average of 46 checkpoints per day, inspecting over 12,600 vehicles during the operation. Officers flagged several popular brands, including Toyota, Peugeot, and Honda.

The Stolen Motor Vehicle (SMV) database, managed by INTERPOL, played a crucial role in the detection process, enabling real-time vehicle checks by officers across the organization’s 196 member countries.

David Caunter, INTERPOL’s Director of Organised and Emerging Crime, highlighted the broader threat posed by vehicle theft.

“Each year, hundreds of thousands of vehicles are stolen around the world, yet the initial theft is often only the beginning of a vehicle’s journey into the global criminal underworld.”

“Stolen vehicles are trafficked across the globe, traded for drugs and other illicit commodities, enriching organized crime groups and even terrorists,” he stated.

The University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA), has marked a major milestone with the 10th edition of the International Conference on Business Management and Entrepreneurial Development (ICBMED), affirming its leadership in bridging academic research and industry needs in Ghana and beyond.

The two-day conference, held on April 29 and 30, 2025, convened scholars, policymakers, industry leaders, and students under the theme: “A Decade of Progress: Bridging Academia and Industry for Business Resilience in Emerging Economies.”

Delivering the keynote address, Vice Chancellor of UPSA, Professor John Kwaku Mensah Mawutor, described ICBMED as more than an academic convening.

He portrayed it as a flagship research initiative that represents the university’s long-term vision to align scholarship with real-world impact.

“Through curriculum innovation, business incubation and thought leadership, we have positioned UPSA not just as a teaching institution but as a force shaping national and industry-wide policy,” Professor Mawutor stated.

He noted that UPSA has restructured its programmes to include entrepreneurial training, digital competencies, and real-world business problem-solving.

He also revealed that the university’s Centre for Entrepreneurship and Innovation has nurtured over 200 startups, many of which have grown into established enterprises in key sectors.

Looking ahead, the Vice Chancellor called on academia and industry to collaborate on translating research into practical innovations, strengthening entrepreneurial ecosystems, and leveraging digital transformation to boost resilience in emerging economies.

Following his remarks, the conference featured an engaging panel discussion at the UPSA Auditorium, where leading voices from education and industry offered insights into closing the gap between the classroom and the boardroom.

Professor Smile Dzisi, Deputy Director General of the Ghana Education Service, highlighted progress in equipping students with job-ready, employable skills.

She stressed the importance of continued investment in practical education that reflects current market demands.

Dr Humphrey Ayim-Darke, President of the Association of Ghana Industries (AGI), outlined efforts by industry players to foster stronger ties with academic institutions, emphasising the mutual benefits of such partnerships.

From the private sector, David Afflu, Managing Director of GBfoods, urged students to cultivate critical thinking, describing it as a skill that is increasingly demanded by employers.

“In industry, we don’t just look for knowledge,we celebrate those who can apply it critically,” he remarked.

The conference concluded with a heartfelt vote of thanks by Dr. Mrs. Juliana Akushika Andoh, lecturer and member of the UPSA protocol team. Citing Proverbs 3:5–6, she acknowledged divine guidance as key to the success of the event.

“We are especially grateful to our industry partners, sponsors, and supporters whose commitment laid the foundation for this conference,” she said.

Zoomlion Ghana Limited has responded to recent media reports and social media discussions regarding its long-standing contract with the Youth Employment Agency (YEA), clarifying its role and obligations under the Youth in Sanitation Module.

The clarification comes after renowned investigative journalist, Manasseh Azure Awuni, called on the YEA to terminate the contract, accusing Zoomlion of exploiting its workers under the sanitation model and not sticking to the terms of the contract.

However, in a statement, the waste management company noted that it signed an agreement with the then Ministry of Youth and Sports under the National Youth Employment Programme, now the YEA.

The contract, according to the statement, tasked Zoomlion with managing and supervising beneficiaries engaged in public cleaning services, while recruitment is handled by the YEA in collaboration with District Assemblies.

“YEA is responsible for recruiting beneficiaries, while Zoomlion manages and supervises their activities.

“The contract provides for a total sum of GHc850 per beneficiary, with GHc258 allocated as allowance and GHc592 as management fee, covering logistics, PPE, and administrative management services.

“Zoomlion has consistently advocated for increment in beneficiary allowances and remains committed to doing so,” part of the statement noted.

Zoomlion noted that it has consistently advocated for an increase in allowances paid to the beneficiaries. The company also disclosed that under the agreement, it is required to pre-finance payments to the youth workers and only receive reimbursement from the government on a quarterly basis.

However, it has not received payments for more than a year, prompting calls for interest payments to help cushion its financial losses from the prolonged delays.

“Under the contract, Zoomlion is required to pre-finance payments to the Beneficiaries, for quarterly reimbursement from the government by the next month after the quarter. Undue delays in payments to Zoomlion for several months have necessitated the call for interest payment, to cushion the company’s loss of value occasioned by the long delays. The Petroleum Hub Development Corporation (PHDC) achieved a significant milestone in its mission to attract investment to Ghana’s Petroleum Hub project by successfully hosting its first inter-agency dialogue on April 30, 2025, at the Kempinski Hotel in Accra.

The landmark summit, themed “Building the Energy Hub of Choice: Unlocking Synergies for a Globally Competitive Petroleum and Petrochemical Hub,” convened ministers, regulatory agencies, and key stakeholders to share expertise and knowledge on streamlining processes for licensing and permitting investments in the Petroleum Hub.

In his address, the Deputy Minister of Energy and Green Transition, Richard Gyan-Mensah, articulated how the Petroleum Hub aligns with the government’s ambitious energy sector goals.

He emphasised Ghana’s strategic positioning amid a global energy transition, underscoring the need to establish the country as a key hub for the storage, refining, and distribution of petrochemical products.

“Ghana’s geographic advantage, existing infrastructure, political stability, and emerging petroleum assets create a unique opportunity,” Gyan-Mensah stated.

“The vision for the Petroleum Hub is bold: to create a fully integrated petroleum and petrochemical hub that meets Ghana’s domestic energy demands while serving as a major export node for West Africa and beyond.”

He described the project as transformative for Ghana’s energy sector and urged government agencies to collaborate closely with the PHDC.

“The theme of this dialogue ‘Strengthening Collaboration for a Globally Competitive Petroleum Industry’ is not just fitting; it is critical. Misalignment among agencies, overlapping mandates, and delayed approvals have hindered progress. This dialogue aims to bridge that gap,” he added.

The Chief Executive Officer of the PHDC, Dr. Toni Aubynn, delivered a keynote address emphasising the importance of inter-agency collaboration in securing the $60 billion needed for the project. He urged stakeholders to work cohesively, avoid siloed efforts, and ensure a seamless, investor-friendly process.

“The success of Ghana’s Petroleum Hub vision hinges on the harmonized efforts of multiple institutions, both public and private,” Dr. Aubynn said. “Siloed actions have led to delays, missed opportunities, and perceptions of bureaucracy that deter investors. This dialogue is our chance to change that narrative and move forward together.”

The Minister of Trade and Industry, Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare, positioned the Petroleum Hub as central to the government’s trade agenda.

“This dialogue marks a significant step toward positioning Ghana as a cornerstone for trade and energy in Africa and beyond,” she said. “By aligning national ambitions with global market realities, we can transform Ghana into a trading powerhouse.”

The panel discussion at the event featured the CEOs of the National Petroleum Authority (NPA), Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Land Use and Spatial Planning Authority (LUSPA), and Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA), who affirmed their steadfast commitment to streamlining and expediting the processes for issuing licenses and permits.

The opening and closing remarks were delivered by Halimatu Sadia Abdulai Abu, Deputy CEO for Finance and Administration, and Onasis Rosely, Deputy CEO for Operations and Technical, respectively.

The event concluded with a collective pledge from all participants to diligently execute their roles in advancing the Petroleum Hub project.

The summit is poised to chart a new course for the nation’s shipping and logistics sector by addressing critical challenges and unlocking new opportunities for growth and sustainability.

The summit comes at a crucial time when Ghana’s shipping, transport, and air cargo logistics industries are grappling with deep-rooted inefficiencies, regulatory hurdles, and cost challenges that have hindered their competitiveness on the global stage.

Despite the sector’s pivotal role in driving trade, job creation, and economic development, persistent issues such as fragmented regulations, uncompetitive operational charges, and the enactment of unfavorable laws without proper stakeholder engagement continue to impede progress.

Recent industry assessments estimate that delays at Ghana’s ports cost businesses approximately $200 million annually in demurrage and storage fees, stifling economic growth and weakening Ghana’s positioning as a regional trade hub.

Cargo clearance at the ports often faces delays of 7 to 14 days, a stark contrast to the global benchmark of one to three days.

Moreover, the country’s ports remain among the most expensive in West Africa, with logistics inefficiencies and burdensome government taxes inflating operational costs by as much as 35 percent.

These heightened costs are ultimately passed down to consumers, increasing the cost of living and undermining Ghana’s attractiveness to global trade partners.

Another pressing concern is the severe lack of accessible credit and financing solutions for logistics operators and service providers, stifling innovation and limiting opportunities for business expansion.

The Minority Caucus Committee on Employment, Labour Relations and Pensions has marked May Day with a critique on the government, accusing the administration of “stripping away workers’ rights” through mass dismissals and undermining collective bargaining structures.

In a statement titled Defending Workers’ Rights and Dignity, the Ranking Member, Mavis Nkansah-Boadu, warned that while the day is meant to honour the contributions of Ghanaian workers, this year’s celebration is marred by what she described as an “onslaught against decent jobs.”

“Today, unfortunately, the progress we have made as a nation is being undermined by the current administration’s mass termination of appointments,” she said.

“Workers’ rights are being stripped away before our eyes.”

Nkansah-Boadu did not mince words in accusing the government of silencing organised labour.

“CSOs and labour unions are not protesting because some leaders of these unions have been appointed into the executive arm of government,” she alleged, pointing to what she sees as compromised leadership within the labour front.

She also slammed the government over the recent minimum wage increase, calling it a betrayal of the extensive stakeholder consultations that preceded it.

“The increase in the minimum wage has unsurprisingly fallen far short of expectations since the government purposely ambushed negotiations,” she stated.

The statement urges workers and unions to break their silence.

“Let the spirit of solidarity resonate throughout our communities today. We urge all workers and unions to share our fight and spread our message to protect decent jobs and the dignity of workers.”

The Minority’s message aligns itself with the International Trade Union Confederation’s 2025 theme: “Industrialisation, Trade, and Decent Work for Social Justice.”

Mrs Nkansah-Boadu’s May Day address ends with a defiant call for resistance.

“It is imperative that the government charts a different path from what is being witnessed. It is also important for us to stand up and resist the Mahama-led administration’s attacks on Ghanaian workers.”

“Ayekoo to all workers,” she added, “but the fight for justice is far from over.”

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has announced that its National Chairman, Stephen Ntim, has temporarily stepped away from the ongoing nationwide ‘Thank You Tour’ to attend to pressing matters.

In a statement signed on Thursday, May 1, by the party’s Director of Communications, Richard Ahiagbah, the NPP assured members that Mr. Ntim remains fully committed to the tour and will rejoin the team in due course.

“The New Patriotic Party wishes to inform all members and the public that the National Chairman has taken a short break from the ongoing nationwide ‘Thank You tour’ to attend to some pressing matters,” the statement read.

The party expressed gratitude to its members for their continued support, enthusiasm, and unwavering commitment throughout the tour.

The nationwide tour, endorsed by the NPP’s National Council, comes in the wake of the party’s defeat in the 2024 general elections to the National Democratic Congress (NDC). In the video, the man describes himself as “very strong” and repeatedly asks for help, hoping that someone in authority would notice his efforts.

Despite his enthusiasm and persistence, he admits he is yet to receive any feedback or opportunity from the relevant agencies.

Stonebwoy, moved by the young man’s determination, took to his X page to express his thoughts and offer assistance.

Stonebwoy stated that he would help the young man potentially connect with opportunities to join one of the security agencies in Ghana.

He further acknowledged that it would be challenging for the young man to be recruited into any of the services through social media.

“This video touched my heart. I would love to see his dreams come true. I’m willing to assist him to possibly connect some dots because I don’t think it’s this simple to ask your way into the service via social media. He might have to meet certain criteria to make it through,” Stonebwoy wrote.

Nana Opoku Ware, son of Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the Asantehene, has been elected as the Student Representative Council (SRC) President of the Ghana School of Law (GSL) for the 2025/2026 academic year.

The 2024 Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) law graduate secured victory in a competitive election held on April 29 and 30, 2025, winning the majority of votes in two of the four GSL campuses, according to a report by asaaseradio.com

Provisional results indicate that Nana Opoku Ware polled a total of 668 votes, representing 35.93% of the 1,859 valid votes cast.

His closest contender, Festus Tetteh Matey, secured 489 votes (26.30%), followed by Michael Obiri-Adjei with 377 votes (20.28%), Benjamin Offei-Addo with 276 votes (14.85%), and Emmanuella Tetteh-Ashong with 49 votes (2.64%).

At the UPSA campus, Nana Opoku Ware garnered 184 votes, edging out Obiri-Adjei (176 votes), Matey (108 votes), Offei-Addo (100 votes), and Tetteh-Ashong (26 votes).

On the KNUST Kumasi campus, he secured 184 votes, significantly ahead of Matey (51 votes), Offei-Addo (50 votes), Obiri-Adjei (20 votes), and Tetteh-Ashong (3 votes).

At the GIMPA Greenhill campus, he polled 109 votes, trailing Matey (153 votes), while Obiri-Adjei, Offei-Addo, and Tetteh-Ashong received 90, 63, and 3 votes, respectively.

At the Accra Main (Makola) campus, Nana Opoku Ware led with 191 votes, followed by Matey (177 votes), Obiri-Adjei (90 votes), Offei-Addo (63 votes), and Tetteh-Ashong (17 votes).

Nana Opoku Ware, a prominent student leader and founder of the Nana Opoku Ware (N.O.W.) Foundation, is known for his philanthropy.

His foundation has provided scholarships for underprivileged students, paid academic fees for 27 needy KNUST students in the 2023/2024 academic year, supplied clean drinking water to communities in Ejisu and Lake Bosomtwe, repaired damaged lecture hall furniture, and introduced Starlink internet connectivity across GSL campuses.

The election, conducted across GSL’s four campuses, Accra Main (Makola), UPSA, Greenhill, and KNUST, saw over 2,300 students from Part 1, Part 2, and post-call programs vote to elect the SRC president and other officers, including vice presidents for each campus, general secretary, organising secretary, treasurer, and five congresspersons per campus.

Nana Opoku Ware succeeds Daniel Otting Awuah, the former SRC President, and is expected to lead the SRC in advocating for student welfare, improving campus infrastructure, and fostering academic excellence.

Waste management company Zoomlion Ghana Limited has clarified its position and role in the ongoing discussions regarding the remuneration of beneficiaries under its management in the contract with the Youth Employment Agency (YEA).

According to Zoomlion, while it does not recruit beneficiaries or determine the allowances paid to them, it has consistently advocated for an increment in these allowances.

The company explained that under its contract with YEA, it serves solely a managerial role, overseeing the beneficiaries whose recruitment and allowance determination are handled entirely by YEA.

“Although the monthly allowance of the beneficiaries is determined by YEA, Zoomlion has consistently advocated for its increment since 2006 and remains committed to doing so,” the company stated.

“We have proposed increments in the past, from GH¢50 (2006–2014) to GH¢100, then to GHS 180 (2019–2022), and to the current GH¢258 (2022–2024). In 2024, Zoomlion submitted a request for the allowance to be increased to GH¢420, which is still under discussion. YEA, however, has countered with a proposal to set the allowance at GH¢300,” the statement added.

As negotiations for contract renewal continue, Zoomlion has come under heavy criticism for what many describe as the woefully inadequate allowances paid to beneficiaries of the YEA sanitation module.

However, Zoomlion has reiterated that the determination of allowance amounts has always been the sole responsibility of the Youth Employment Agency, not the company.

Former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has visited a Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) student who was stabbed by an unknown assailant in Kumasi on Monday night.

The student (name witheld), a member of the Unity Hall “jama group” at KNUST, had been performing cheer songs at an event during the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Thank-You Tour in Bantama on Tuesday. The stabbing incident occurred at the Bantama Pentecost Church, where the event was held.

He was reportedly stabbed following a misunderstanding over money between his group and another yet-to-be-identified group after the event.

The injured student is currently receiving treatment at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital.

Dr Bawumia, who is continuing his Thank-You Tour in the Ashanti Region, visited the victim on Wednesday evening at the hospital.

Accompanied by leading NPP officials, Dr Bawumia expressed his sympathies and extended his best wishes to the injured student.

He also donated GH¢50,000 to support the student’s medical expenses. The donation was received by the student’s grandmother, who expressed heartfelt gratitude to Dr Bawumia and the delegation for their visit and support.

Dr Bawumia thanked the Almighty Allah for sparing the life of the student and wished him a full and speedy recovery.

Interpol discovers 150 stolen cars from Canada in Ghana, Nigeria, other countries

An international police operation targeting vehicle crime in West Africa has led to the detection of approximately 150 stolen vehicles.

The operation, codenamed Safe Wheels, took place from March 17 to 30, 2025 and involved national law enforcement agencies across 12 West African countries, including Ghana and Nigeria, led to the seizure of more than 75 vehicles.

The operation also initiated 18 new investigations and uncovered the involvement of two organized crime groups.

Most of the stolen vehicles detected through INTERPOL’s Stolen Motor Vehicle (SMV) database were trafficked from Canada, while many had also been reported stolen in France, Germany and the Netherlands.

INTERPOL’s SMV database allows police in the Organization’s 196 member countries to run a check against a suspicious vehicle and find out instantly whether it has been reported as stolen.

In 2024, the SMV database identified around 270,000 stolen vehicles.

David Caunter, Director of Organized and Emerging Crime at INTERPOL, said: “Each year, hundreds of thousands of vehicles are stolen around the world, yet the initial theft is often only the beginning of a vehicle’s journey into the global criminal underworld.

“Stolen vehicles are trafficked across the globe, traded for drugs and other illicit commodities, enriching organized crime groups and even terrorists.

“INTERPOL’s SMV database is the strongest tool we have to track stolen vehicles and identify the criminals involved in this global trade.”

During the two-week operation, law enforcement in participating countries established an average of 46 checkpoints each day to inspect a total of 12,600 vehicles, checking their details against INTERPOL’s SMV database.

Out of the vehicles seized or flagged as stolen,  the popular models were Toyota, followed by Peugeot and Honda. The operation detect that both land and sea routes were used to traffic stolen vehicles.

In Nigeria, the Nigerian Customs Service (NCS) uncovered six high-end vehicles – Toyota and Lexus models – four of which showed clear signs of break-in hidden in freight containers arriving in Lagos from Canada.

Checks against INTERPOL’s SMV database confirmed that all six vehicles were reported stolen in Canada in 2024. Investigations are ongoing in collaboration with Canada’s INTERPOL National Central Bureau and Nigerian Customs Services.

Nine law enforcement officers and experts from INTERPOL’s SMV Task Force, including an expert examiner from Canada, were also deployed to the region – in Benin, Cabo Verde, Gambia, Ghana, Nigeria and Togo – to support Operation Safe Wheels.

The operation forms part of Project Drive Out, a joint initiative between INTERPOL and the Government of Canada, aimed at curbing the smuggling of stolen vehicles and illegal car parts. The project is backed by Canadian funding and technical support.

INTERPOL member countries that participated in the operation were: Benin, Burkina Faso, Cabo Verde, Cote d’Ivoire, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea Bissau, Mali, Mauritania, Niger, Nigeria, and Togo.

Accra, March 30,GNA- The Burkina Be community in Ghana has held a solidarity march in support of their President, Captain Ibrahim Traoré.

This march took place against the backdrop of a recently foiled coup d’état attempt against the head of the military junta in the West African country.

The military government in Burkina Faso claimed on 22nd April to have thwarted a ‘major plot’ aimed at toppling their leader, Captain Ibrahim Traoré.

They indicated that the plot was discovered by intercepting communications between a high-ranking officer in the Burkinabé military and terrorist leaders.

The march was attended by students, business leaders, and senior diplomats from Burkina Faso residing in Ghana.

There was also fraternal attendance from key Pan-African movements in Ghana, members of the Socialist Movement, and the Rastafari movement in the country.

Attendees of the march held placards with various inscriptions, expressing solidarity with the President of Burkina Faso.

Mr Romuald Sawadogo, President of the Burkina Faso Community in Ghana, stated that Burkina Bes in Ghana had been monitoring developments in their homeland.

He expressed concern about recent attempts by Western powers and their allies in the West African sub-region to oust President Traoré.

Mr Sawadogo asserted that such actions jeopardised ongoing efforts by the Burkina Faso President to steer the country towards transformative development.

Mr Sawadogo accused Western powers of compromising the interests of the country by consistently interfering in the Internal affairs of the African continent.

He cited past African leaders who fell victim to Western opposition for promoting the interests of their people.

“We want to say no to some of the exploitation that we have experienced from outsiders. Individuals like Kwame Nkrumah, Patrice Lumumba, and Thomas Sankara were either assassinated or forcibly removed from power,’ he said.

Mr David Kabre, Burkina Faso Ambassador to Ghana, assured the diaspora community of relaying their messages of solidarity and support to the President.

“Every flag raised, every slogan shouted, every hand raised in solidarity, writes a line in this Pan-African struggle. And I want to reassure you, to solemnly assure you, all the messages delivered here today will be faithfully transmitted to His Excellency, Captain Ibrahim Traoré.”

“He will be informed of this march in its entirety, of the involvement of each institution, each association and citizen,” he said.

He also stated that the sovereignty of the country is currently at risk, as Western powers have increasingly been enthused and disturbed by the patriotic desire of President Traoré to develop the country.

The Ambassador praised the diaspora community for their support in defending the sovereignty of the country against ‘imperialist’ interests.

‘A Plus is Now an MP, His Allegations Against AG Must Be Taken Seriously

The Member of Parliament for Oforikrom, Michael Kwasi Aidoo, has called for an urgent investigation into corruption allegations made against the Attorney General by fellow MP, Kwame Asare Obeng, popularly known as A Plus as reported by Ghana Web.

Aidoo emphasized that with A Plus now serving as a Member of Parliament, the gravity of the corruption claims has significantly increased.

“Today, A Plus is no longer merely a citizen with a social media platform, he now serves as a Member of Parliament,” Aidoo noted in a recent post on Facebook.

“This position significantly elevates the gravity of any allegations connected to him.”

The Oforikrom MP highlighted a crucial precedent set by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo back in 2017, when he initiated investigations into allegations of corruption against other government officials following A Plus’s social media posts.

Aidoo pointed out that the President’s response to these past allegations established the expectation that claims of corruption must always be thoroughly investigated.

“A decisive action established a clear precedent: allegations of corruption, regardless of their source, warrant thorough scrutiny,” Aidoo said, referring to the President’s earlier stance.

He urged President Akufo-Addo to demonstrate similar leadership in this instance, calling for an independent and transparent investigation into the Attorney General’s actions.

Aidoo further stressed the importance of public trust and the need for accountability in Ghana’s democratic institutions.

“The credibility of our democratic institutions hangs in the balance,” he warned, revealing that the investigation must be swift and thorough.

Over 500,000 Ghanaians to benefit from National Apprenticeship Programme

Over 500,000 young Ghanaians are expected to benefit from free technical and vocational training over the next five years under the newly launched National Apprenticeship Programme.

The programme, launched by President John Mahama at the University for Development Studies in Tamale, is part of a broader effort to tackle youth unemployment by providing hands-on skills training and startup support.

President Mahama announced that all trainees will receive monthly allowances during their training and startup capital upon completion to help them begin their own businesses.

“Each apprentice will receive a stipend, an allowance for transport. At the end of the programme, you will be given a certificate that shows you are professionally qualified in the trade you went to learn. You can use that certificate if you want to find a job or go into self-employment,” he stated.

The National Apprenticeship Programme is designed to be inclusive. President Mahama said 45 percent of the trainees will be women, with at least five percent reserved for persons with disabilities. Special arrangements will also be made for other vulnerable groups.

“The initiative aims to provide young people with hands-on training by pairing them with experienced master craftsmen and women across various strains. These include tailoring, welding, hairdressing, carpentry, auto mechanics, and more,” the President said.

Graduates of the programme will receive tools, equipment, and other support to help them transition into employment or entrepreneurship.

To ensure sustainability, President Mahama also revealed that 300 million Ghana Cedis in full funding has been allocated in the 2025 budget stating that this is a sustainable long-term project.

Nigerian artiste, Davido, has humorously asked Ghanaian musician Black Sherif to allow him take the top spot on Ghana’s Apple Music chart.

In an Instagram story shared by Davido on April 28, 2025, the ‘Assurance’ hitmaker shared a screenshot showing the Top 16 songs on Ghana Apple Music.

His new track ‘With You’, a collaboration with Omah Lay from his recently released 5ive album, had climbed to number three.

However, the rest of the chart was completely dominated by Black Sherif, with all 15 other songs coming from his new album ‘Iron Boy’.

Tagging Black Sherif in the post, Davido playfully wrote, “@blacksherif_ IRON BOY .. how far make I enter #1. I wan screenshot,” drawing reactions from fans, particularly in Ghana.

Black Sherif’s Iron Boy has been a huge success since its release.

It set a record for the most streams in a day for a Ghanaian album on Spotify, hitting 2 million streams.

It also ranked sixth on Spotify’s Top Debut Albums chart in the UK.

To promote the release, Black Sherif launched a global tour which began on April 4, 2025, performing across North America and Europe.

The management of Zoomlion Ghana Limited has provided clarification regarding the remuneration of beneficiaries and workers delivering sanitation services under the company’s program across the country.

In a press statement dated April 30, 2025, Zoomlion Ghana Limited provided details indicating that, under its contractual agreement with the Youth Employment Agency (YEA), each beneficiary is entitled to a stipend of GH¢850.

Of this amount, GH¢258 is paid directly to the beneficiaries as an allowance, while the remaining GH¢592 is allocated to Zoomlion as a management fee.

According to the company, this fee covers the cost of uniforms and other essential equipment required for the beneficiaries to carry out their sanitation duties.

“The contract provides for a total sum of GH¢850 per beneficiary, of which GH¢ 258 is allocated to the Beneficiary as an allowance, while the remaining GH¢592 constitutes a management Fee to Zoomlion.

This management Fee covers brooms, bristle brushes, shovels, wheelbarrows, pickers, reflective road cones, hand gloves, uniforms, reflective jackets, wellington boots, and head pans and funds the management duties stated above,” parts of the statement read.

The management, in its statement, further clarified that the recruitment of workers and beneficiaries under the initiative is the sole responsibility of the YEA, not the company.

The company further stated that once beneficiaries are recruited by the YEA, their names are submitted to Zoomlion, which then fulfills its obligations in accordance with the contractual agreement.

“Clause 1.5 of the contract states that YEA is responsible for the recruitment of Beneficiaries whose names shall be submitted to Zoomlion Ghana Limited, and by reason of such submission, Zoomlion shall perform its obligations therein stated. The database of the Beneficiaries is managed by YEA, which assigns a unique identification number to every Beneficiary, and the same is indicated on their appointment letters.

“All additions or removals of beneficiaries are effected by the YEA through formal correspondence and established administrative procedures. Accordingly, Zoomlion has no interference in the recruitment of the Beneficiaries,” it added.

The statement went on to say that, “Zoomlion has always operated under a strict compliance framework, and as such, the company will warmly welcome any exercise geared towards strengthening the efficiency and effectiveness of our systems.”

The statement concluded by reaffirming Zoomlion’s commitment to creating employment opportunities for the general public through its sanitation module.

Ghana’s local currency, the cedi has appreciated on the interbank market against major trading currencies, particularly the US dollar, at some forex bureaus.

In its daily update, the Bank of Ghana noted that the cedi is trading at a buying price of GH¢14.14 and a selling price of GH¢14.15 to a dollar

The British pound is being bought at GH¢18.86 and sold at GH¢18.88, while the euro trades at a buying price of GH¢16.05 and selling price of GH¢16.07.

Checks by GhanaWeb Business on May 1, 2025, as of 9:00 AM indicate that the cedi is trading at GH¢15.20, while the pound is GH¢20.39 at some forex bureaus across the country.

Also, the euro is trading at GH¢17.20 on the retail market.

To curb the cedi’s depreciation, the Bank of Ghana sold over $200 million in the last quarter of 2024.
