Group CEO of GOIL PLC, Edward Bawa has raised concerns over Ghana’s declining oil production, attributing the issue to deep-rooted structural challenges within the sector.

Speaking at an oil and gas forum in Accra on Wednesday, April 16, 2025, Bawa revealed that Ghana’s oil production has dropped by more than 25 percent in recent years.

“Let’s not deny or pretend that the situation in Ghana today is not good. It’s not good because if we look at the data from 2019 to now, production has declined by about 25%,” he said.

Bawa’s remarks underscore the urgent need for reforms and investment to address the obstacles hampering the country’s oil output and to ensure long-term sustainability.

He further explained that the decline in production is primarily due to underinvestment and inefficiencies, noting that some license holders have failed to effectively develop or utilise their allocated resources.

“This has been caused by various factors, underinvestment and cases where even those holding licenses are not actively developing resources,” he added.

Bawa was first appointed Acting CEO of the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC) in January 2025 by President John Mahama, before he was later reassigned as GOIL Group as CEO in February 2025.

First-year tertiary students will no longer receive direct refunds

0

Deputy Education Minister Dr Clement Apaak has disclosed that first-year university students will not receive direct refunds under the government’s no-fee stress policy.

Instead, funds will be credited toward their second-year tuition fees.

Speaking on Joy News Dr Apaak explained that this approach ensures accountability and avoids logistical challenges.

He stated, “Rather than the physical reimbursement, going forward, as they go into their second year, what should have come to them to defer their academic fee for the first year will become a credit, which will then mean that as they go to second year, they wouldn’t have to pay because they have already paid for their first year.”

Adding “This approach helps us avoid logistical challenges and any potential impropriety.”

The policy, initially promised by President John Mahama during the election campaign, aimed to absorb fees for all Level 100 students within the first 120 days of his administration.

Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu had reaffirmed this commitment, assuring refunds for students who had already paid for the 2025 academic year.

Despite allocating GHS499.8 million for implementation, the government has ruled out direct reimbursements for this academic year. Instead, funds will be disbursed directly to universities to streamline the process and prevent impropriety.

‘Blatant Lie’ – Chairman Wontumi Denies Illegal Mining Allegations Involving Chinese Nationals

0

Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, has strongly denied allegations linking him to illegal mining activities involving foreign nationals on a site operated by Akonta Mining Limited as reported by Ghana Web.

The accusations were made by Elikem Kotoko, Deputy Chief Executive Officer of the Forestry Commission, who claimed in a Facebook post that an intelligence-led raid in the Western North Region uncovered illegal operations allegedly connected to Akonta Mining.

According to Kotoko, six Chinese, two Koreans, and 18 Ghanaians were arrested, with several excavators seized.

Reacting swiftly, Chairman Wontumi dismissed the allegations as entirely baseless.

He admitted ownership of Akonta Mining but emphasized that the company is currently not operational and has not engaged in any illegal activities.

“I have a legitimate license to mine on my site, but I have stopped mining in the area long ago due to what illegal miners did on my land,” he said in an interview on Wontumi FM

Wontumi further revealed that rather than engage in illegal mining, he has taken steps to rehabilitate the land, funding a contractor to reclaim the degraded area and plant 15,000 coconut trees.

He maintained that he has no connection with any of the individuals arrested during the raid and insisted that his company has not housed any illegal miners.

“I have no idea who the illegal miners arrested by the police are,” he stated, reaffirming his commitment to legal and environmentally responsible mining practices.

Henry Nana Boakye is the NPP National Organiser Henry Nana Boakye is the NPP National Organiser

The National Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Henry Nana Boakye, has alleged that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) made attempts to access the contents of the electoral review committee report led by Professor Aaron Mike Oquaye.

According to him, the NDC’s efforts to obtain the report were unsuccessful, prompting them to circulate fabricated documents falsely claimed to be excerpts from the official report.

“The NDC has resorted to this old propaganda strategy after their strenuous attempts to obtain the contents of the report proved futile,” he said on April 17, 2025.

Nana Boakye categorically dismissed the circulating reports, allegedly excerpts from the committee’s findings, as false.

He emphasised that the documents being promoted by the NDC are fabricated and do not appear anywhere in the official report.

“The fake portions of Professor Mike Oquaye’s committee report being circulated by elements in the NDC are complete fabrications not contained in the report,” he asserted.

He assured the public that the official report, which was submitted to the NPP’s national executives following the committee’s investigation into the party’s 2024 electoral loss, remains securely safeguarded.

Boakye added that the party’s opponents would not be given access to the report under any circumstances.

“Expect more of such conjectures in the coming days. The report is in safe custody, and the NDC will not get it,” he declared.

His comments come in response to widely circulated excerpts purportedly from the committee’s report, which appear to assign blame to certain individuals for the NPP’s loss in the 2024 general elections.

“Embarrassed if CJ Is Removed Based on These Petitions’ – Osei-Owusu Questions Grounds for Removal

News Hub Creator39min

Joseph Osei-Owusu, former First Deputy Speaker of Parliament, has stated that the process for removing Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo cannot be swayed by the President as reported by Citinewsroom.

His comments come in response to three petitions circulating on social media calling for her removal.

Osei-Owusu expressed surprise at the content of the petitions, questioning their credibility.

“My position is that the process cannot be influenced by the president,” he said, adding that he would be “very much surprised and disappointed” if the grounds listed in the petitions were valid.

While acknowledging that social media can spread misinformation, Osei-Owusu raised concerns about the validity of the petitions.

“If that is truly the content, the basis for which the petitioners are asking that the CJ be removed, I will be very surprised, disappointed and truly embarrassed if any committee will come to a conclusion that based on such petition, the CJ of Ghana will be removed,” he said.

The former deputy speaker stressed the importance of judicial independence and warned that any move to remove the Chief Justice should be grounded in substantial and credible evidence.

“We need to protect judicial independence,” he emphasized, revealing that the integrity of the judiciary must remain intact.

Bernard Antwi-Boasiako alias Chairman Wontumi, NPP Ashanti Regional Chairman Bernard Antwi-Boasiako alias Chairman Wontumi, NPP Ashanti Regional Chairman

The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party, Bernard Antwi-Boasiako has refuted claims by the Deputy Chief Executive Officer of Forestry Commission, Elikem Kotoko, that link him to illegal mining activities involving some Chinese nationals.

Elikem Kotoko, in a Facebook post, alleged that some Chinese illegal miners working on a site belonging to Akonta Mining owned by Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, widely called Chairman Wontumi, had been arrested by the Ghana Police Service.

“On the eve of Good Friday, just after wrapping up my working visit to the Ashanti Region, I joined an intelligence-led operation by the Ghana Police Service on behalf of the Forestry Commission of Ghana in a raid of about six illegal mining sites allegedly belonging to Akonta Mining (which is believed to be owned by the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the NPP, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi) in Samreboi, Western North Region.

“The exercise resulted in the arrest of 6 Chinese, 2 Koreans, and 18 Ghanaians. A total of 8 excavators were also taken, while 5 were abandoned at their locations due to mobility challenges,” he wrote.

Chairman Wontumi, in a quick riposte, has labeled these allegations as a “blantant lie” to associate him with illegal mining, locally known as galamsey.

Although he is the owner of Akonta Mining Limited, Antwi-Boasiako said in an interview with Wontumi FM and monitored by Ghanaweb that “I have a legitimate license to mine on my site but I have stopped mining in the area long ago due to what illegal miners did on my land”.

According to him, the only activity he has performed on his mining site is to pay for a contractor to “reclaim the land degraded by illegal miners” and “plant 15,000 coconut trees” on it.

He stressed he has neither a relationship with the illegal miners nor has his mining company harbored any.

“I have no idea who the illegal miners arrested by the police are and I am committed to protecting the environment of Ghana through legal mining despite Akonta Mining Limited not being in operation for some time now,” he vehemently denied Elikem Kotoko’s assertions.

0

The Police have arrested 26 people for illegal mining in a forest reserve near Samreboi in the Western Region.

The raid, carried out with intelligence support, is part of a broader effort to stop galamsey, which has caused severe environmental damage across Ghana.

The operation was led by multiple police units, including the Intelligence Directorate, CID, National Operations Directorate, and the Formed Police Unit. Officers stormed the mining site and detained six Chinese nationals, two Koreans and 18 Ghanaians suspected of working in the protected area.

Eight excavators were also confiscated, while five others were left behind due to transport difficulties.  Additionally, officers seized two Toyota Hilux pickup trucks, a Toyota RAV4, four motorbikes, and various mining equipment linked to the illegal activity.

Authorities linked the site to Akonta Mining Company, owned by Bernard Antwi Boasiako, also known as Chairman Wontumi. His name has surfaced in discussions about illegal mining in Ghana.

Police found several mining tools and weapons at the scene, including pump-action guns, water pumps, excavators, payloaders, machetes, and vehicles. The environmental damage was severe, with vast sections of land destroyed and water bodies polluted.

The suspects remain in custody and will face legal proceedings soon.

Inspector General of Police Christian Tetteh Yohuno has reaffirmed the police’s commitment to ending illegal mining and protecting Ghana’s natural resources.

Accra, April 18, 2025 — The Regional Communications Manager of Ghana Water Limited (GWL) for Accra East, Nana Yaw Barima Barnie, has appealed to residents experiencing water supply disruptions to report directly to the nearest GWL office for timely intervention.

Speaking on Channel One TV’s Breakfast Daily, Barnie emphasized the critical role of community engagement in resolving water challenges, particularly amid ongoing concerns about intermittent water supply in parts of the Greater Accra Region.

“If their water is not flowing, they should do well to approach us… There is always an office nearby,” Barnie noted. “Once a complaint is made, we will follow up and see how we can help restore water supply.”

Dire Water Shortages in Communities Like Nungua

A recent Channel One News report spotlighted worsening water shortages in areas such as Leisure Street in Nungua, where local food vendors and small businesses are increasingly reliant on expensive private water vendors to stay operational.

Residents across the region have expressed growing frustration, citing disruptions to daily routines and rising living costs. The situation has prompted urgent calls for systematic improvements and communication from utility providers.

Barnie assured the public that GWL is prepared to act on officially lodged complaints, urging customers to utilize GWL’s customer service network to facilitate quicker solutions.

Entertainment pundit and media personality MC Portfolio has asserted that he plays a pivotal role in Kumasi’s entertainment scene, adding that any artiste looking to work on a project in the city must go through him.

Speaking in an interview with Nana Romeo on Accra FM, MC Portfolio stated that he has been so richly blessed by God that he has become the go-to person for entertainment matters in Kumasi.

According to him, he sees himself as an indispensable figure in the city’s entertainment space, not just a visible presence, but a trusted and reliable contact that artistes and industry stakeholders consistently turn to.

“God has blessed me in such a way that any artiste wanting to undertake a project in Kumasi must go through me,” he stated.

He went on to give an example of how his influence played a role in Shatta Wale, launching his “Ahodwo Las Vegas” project in Kumasi.

MC Portfolio noted that he served as a PR person for Shatta Wale’s project in Kumasi, and has also been actively influencing decisions, including artistes’ selection for the project.

“When Shatta Wale wanted to launch his Ahodwo Las Vegas project, I served as the public relations officer, and Andy Dosty introduced me as the go-to person for any project in Kumasi. That’s when I suggested some names to Shatta Wale, which helped me build a rapport with him,” he shared.

MC Portfolio also addressed critics who have labelled him a hypocrite for working with both Shatta Wale and Stonebwoy, two artistes known for their longstanding rivalry.

He defended his decision and emphasised the importance of professionalism in the industry.

“Some people call me a hypocrite, but what they don’t understand is that before I committed to working for Stonebwoy, I already had a relationship with Shatta Wale. I play my role in everyone’s life and then get back to my lane,” he said.

Easter teaches the power of self-sacrifice – Kwasi Pratt Jnr

The Managing Editor of the Insight Newspaper, Kwasi Pratt Jnr The Managing Editor of the Insight Newspaper, Kwasi Pratt Jnr

The Managing Editor of the Insight Newspaper, Kwasi Pratt Jnr, has emphasised that the core message of Easter is the power of self-sacrifice for the greater good.

He explained that the season transcends religious boundaries and holds deep significance for all, particularly for revolutionaries committed to dismantling systems of exploitation.

Pratt noted that while Easter is rooted in Christian tradition, its central principle should resonate with anyone seeking social transformation.

“The most important principle or lesson of Easter is self-sacrifice for the general good, and this goes beyond religious sectarianism,” he stated in a post shared on social media on April 18, 2025.

He urged all change-seekers, especially revolutionaries, to understand the weight and seriousness of their mission.

“It is essential for all those pursuing any cause, especially revolutionaries who seek to overthrow the existing order of exploitation, domination, and oppression, to be ready to make the ultimate sacrifice,” he said.

Pratt added that true assurance of victory does not lie in blind faith but in scientific validation and unwavering commitment to the cause.

“The assurance of victory comes from the validation of our methods and vision by science, and our determination to overcome all obstacles,” he declared.

Drawing a parallel between the crucifixion of Jesus Christ and the struggles faced by revolutionary movements, Pratt argued that even those who reject religious dogma can draw important lessons from the Easter story.

“The crucifixion of Jesus the Christ and the lessons drawn from it are important for the advancement of the world, even for those of us who refuse to embrace superstition.”

He concluded, “The slogan Victory or Death makes sense within this context.”

Gold Fields sues government over termination of Damang Mine lease

0

The legal move follows the government's decision not to renew the company's 30-year lease The legal move follows the government’s decision not to renew the company’s 30-year lease

Reports from the Africa Centre for Energy Policy (ACEP) indicate that Abosso Goldfields Limited, a subsidiary of mining giant Gold Fields Limited, has taken legal action against the Government of Ghana following the termination of its mining lease for the Damang site.

The legal move follows the government’s decision not to renew the company’s 30-year lease, a stance reportedly influenced by pressure from local youth who have accused the company of failing to contribute meaningfully to community development.

With the lease set to expire on Friday, April 18, 2025, the government has assumed operational control of the Damang Mine.

In an official statement, the government cited the company’s inability to declare verifiable mineral reserves as a critical reason for rejecting Abosso Goldfields Limited’s lease renewal application.

Gold Fields Limited, one of the world’s leading gold producers, operates two major mining sites in Ghana: the Tarkwa Mine, managed by Gold Fields Ghana, and the Damang Mine, operated by Abosso Goldfields Limited.

The company gained full operational control of the Damang Mine in 2011 after acquiring IAMGold’s remaining shares.

Currently, Gold Fields holds a 90% ownership stake in the Damang Mine, while the Government of Ghana retains the remaining 10%.

Orthodox Christians in Bulgaria Observe Good Friday

0

Sofia, April 18, BTA/GNA – Orthodox Christians in Bulgaria observe Good Friday. On this day, the Orthodox Church commemorates the death of Christ on the Cross. Good Friday is the day of strictest fasting. By abstaining from water and food, believers express their compassion for Christ’s suffering.

In churches across the country, believers gather for morning services where twelve excerpts from the Gospel recounting Christ’s sufferings are read.

The rituals in the temples are dedicated to the crucifixion of Jesus Christ.

At Orthodox Christian churches in Bulgaria, a replica of the Holy Shroud, in which his body was wrapped after being taken down from the cross, is taken out as a symbol of Jesus Christ’s divine presence on earth.

Before the service begins, Christ’s “tomb” is erected in the middle of the church, decorated with flowers, and the shroud is placed on the throne – a piece of cloth on which the image of the Saviour laid in the tomb is embroidered. Nowadays the shroud is usually placed on a table and Orthodox Christians pass under it and pray for health and divine favour.
For church ritual, this action has the value of bowing before the tomb of the Lord, and for folk tradition this is the hope of health.

The evening service focuses on Christ’s death.

To add to the excitement, the Ghana Tourism Authority has introduced a range of new activities to engage visitors at the site. These include indoor games and a designated children’s playground, all designed to make the event more inclusive and enjoyable for families.
Rev. Jones Nelson, Head of Corporate Affairs at the Ghana Tourism Authority, highlighted the expanded offerings and flight expectations.

“This year, we have added a few activities to make it very interesting. We’ll be having some playing cards, ludo, oware, skating and others, as well as laying areas for children. And we are hoping that if we have favourable weather, we’ll have like 200 flights. We have done 200 and over 200 before.”
Even as the festival draws crowds, concerns persist over the poor condition of the road leading from Atibie to the paragliding site.

Drivers on the Mpraeso-Atibie stretch stated that repeated promises by successive governments to fix the road have not been fulfilled.

“They charge us every year to fix the road, but the road hasn’t seen any improvement. It is difficult to ply on the road during the rainy season, so we plead with the government to come to our aid. They were charging us 5 cedis last year but 10 cedis for this year,” a commercial driver complained.
Meanwhile, excitement continues to build among thrill-seekers. Abigail Ashley, the first person to fly at this year’s festival, described the experience as exhilarating and urged the Ghana Tourism Authority to train local pilots and expand the event beyond Easter.

“The experience was fine. I wanted to do it, so I came with full vim and I conquered. I got a good pilot, so it made it more fun. Aside from the wind that blows against you in the beginning, the experience is great. This should be done regularly, they shouldn’t open up just for Easter.”

As festivities continue, organisers are hopeful that favourable weather will allow all interested participants to enjoy their flight, making this year’s event another successful highlight on Ghana’s tourism calendar.

NPP condemns Hopeson Adorye’s alleged threats against Jennifer Queen

0

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has strongly condemned alleged threats of assault made by Hopeson Yaovi Adorye, a panelist from the Movement for Change, against Jennifer Oforiwaa Queen, the NPP’s Deputy Director of Communications.

The incident reportedly occurred during a live broadcast of UTV’s morning show, sparking widespread backlash and calls for accountability.

In a statement dated April 17 and signed by NPP Communications Director Richard Ahiagbah, the party expressed serious concern over the development and underscored the need to protect women’s rights to participate in politics without fear or intimidation.

“Ghana has made significant strides in driving women’s political participation and amplifying their voices in our national discourse. Threats of assault — or actual assault — on women for expressing their political views must not be tolerated,” the statement noted.

The NPP further urged media outlets, particularly UTV, to uphold standards of respectful and democratic dialogue on their platforms and remain vigilant against any conduct that undermines Ghana’s democratic values and commitment to free speech.

Three more Nigerian girls rescued from trafficking in Ghana, repatriated home

0

Three Nigerian teenage girls trafficked to Ghana have been rescued and safely returned to the country, the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) confirmed on Friday.

In a statement signed by Abdur-Rahman Balogun, Director of Media, Public Relations and Protocols at NiDCOM, the agency revealed that the victims, Divine, Favour, and Bright, aged between 17 and 19, were deceived by their aunts with promises of employment, only to be forced into prostitution.

The girls were officially received at the NiDCOM office in Lagos on Thursday and subsequently handed over to the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) for profiling and rehabilitation.

Abike Dabiri-Erewa, Chairman/CEO of NiDCOM,  who addressed the media during the reception, lamented the continued silence surrounding human traffickers and called for a more aggressive stance.

“Until we begin to name and shame the perpetrators of this modern-day slavery, human trafficking will not end,” she said.

Dabiri-Erewa also commended Callistus Elozieuwa, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Nigerians in Diaspora Organisation (NIDO) Ghana, for working closely with Ghanaian security agencies to rescue victims.

She acknowledged the Nigerian Embassy in Ghana for its consular support and praised  Oluremi Tinubu, First Lady, for facilitating the girls’ return home.

The commission disclosed that more than 169 Nigerians have been repatriated from Ghana in recent months, underscoring the persistent threat posed by human trafficking networks.

The rescued girls, originally from Bayelsa and Ebonyi States, are now in the custody of the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP), where they will receive further support and rehabilitation.

Kendrick Lamar’s Super Bowl, Grammy performance orchestrated to assassinate my character – Drake

0

Drake has claimed that he was defamed by Kendrick Lamar’s Super Bowl halftime show, and at the Grammy Awards, where over 100 million combined television viewers heard Lamar’s notorious diss track “Not Like Us,” according to court filings.

The Canadian rapper levelled the new allegations Wednesday in an expanded federal defamation lawsuit against his own record label, Universal Music Group.

Drake originally filed the lawsuit in connection with the track in January.

“These prestigious and high-exposure events introduced new listeners” to the allegedly defamatory song, Drake’s lawyers wrote in the latest filing.

“Not only did streams of the Recording increase significantly following these two mega-cultural events, but threats against Drake and his family did as well,” the lawyers added.

Drake’s current label is Republic Records, a division of UMG. Lamar – who is not named in the lawsuit – is an Interscope Records artist, also a division of UMG. Drake’s amended complaint does not accuse Pulitzer Prize-winner Lamar of any wrongdoing.

UMG has argued that the lawsuit should be dismissed, and their motion is still pending.

“Drake, unquestionably one of the world’s most accomplished artists and with whom we’ve enjoyed a 16-year successful relationship, is being misled by his legal representatives into taking one absurd legal step after another,” UMG told CNN in a statement on Thursday, in response to Drake’s amended lawsuit.

The dispute stems from last year’s epic feud between rappers Drake and Lamar, who traded increasingly personal and unverified insults in a series of songs. In “Not Like Us,” Lamar claimed Drake was a “certified pedophile,” an allegation that Drake vehemently denies.

That song was “broadcast to the largest audience for a Super Bowl halftime show ever,” Drake’s lawyers wrote Wednesday, adding, “It was the first, and will hopefully be the last, Super Bowl halftime show orchestrated to assassinate the character of another artist.”

During the halftime show, Lamar skipped over the “certified pedophile” line, but did rap another line where he accused Drake of targeting young girls – a moment that went viral.

In Wednesday’s filing, Drake’s lawyers argued that Lamar didn’t utter the song’s most famous lyric because “nearly everyone understands that it is defamatory.” They also claimed their damages were compounded because “the image of Lamar looking directly at the camera when he named Drake and stated that Drake ‘likes ’em young… became a viral meme.”

One week before the Super Bowl, at the Grammys, Lamar took home five awards, including record of the year and song of the year. He didn’t perform “Not Like Us” during the ceremony, but snippets were played on multiple occasions when Lamar won his Grammys, and the crowd audibly sang along to another controversial line about Drake.

CNN previously reported that Lamar’s Super Bowl performance earned an average of 133.5 million viewers, making it the “most-watched Super Bowl halftime performance in history” according to Fox, the big show’s broadcaster. According to the Hollywood Reporter, the Grammys drew in 15.4 million viewers when it aired in January.

UMG has repeatedly denied Drake’s defamation allegations, and his claims that the label paid to inflate online streams of the song, and says his lawsuit is both “illogical” and “frivolous.” UMG says the lawsuit could restrict free-speech protections for musical artists.

Drake was handed an early procedural victory earlier this month, when Judge Jeannette Vargas rejected an attempt by UMG to pause the legal fact-finding process known as “discovery.” Judge Vargas said Drake can move forward with and pursue UMG’s documents about the Super Bowl performance, the Grammy Awards, Lamar’s record contract, and more.

“With discovery now moving forward, Drake will expose the evidence of UMG’s misconduct, and UMG will be held accountable for the consequences of its ill-conceived decisions,” Drake’s lawyer, Michael Gottlieb, told CNN in a statement Thursday.

Regarding the recent ruling, UMG said, “Drake will personally be subject to discovery as well. As the old saying goes, ‘be careful what you wish for.’”

Later on Thursday, Drake’s lawyers told CNN, in part, “Drake knows exactly what he asked for: the truth and accountability.”

The lawsuit is still in its initial stages. If there isn’t an out-of-court settlement, which is common in defamation cases, the trial is on track to potentially begin in summer 2026.

Trump administration set to close down numerous US embassies with 60% in Africa

0

US President Donald Trump US President Donald Trump

The Donald Trump administration is said to be proposing major cuts to the United States (US) State Department’s budget, with plans to reduce it by over $30 billion, more than half, for the 2026 fiscal year.

According to CNN journalist Larry Madowo, this cost-cutting initiative includes the closure of up to 30 US diplomatic missions worldwide, with around 60% of the affected posts located in Africa.

In a video shared on his X platform on April 17, 2025, Madowo cited an internal memo indicating that the Trump administration intends to shut down at least 27 diplomatic missions, including both embassies and consulates, primarily in Africa and Europe.

The said memo also outlines plans to transition some missions to lower-cost operational models and consolidate multi-mission posts, such as the one at UNESCO in Paris.

These proposed closures are part of a broader strategy to reduce foreign aid by nearly 75% and restructure the US diplomatic corps in line with the administration’s “America First” agenda.

Among the African countries likely to see embassy closures, if the plan is approved, are South Sudan, Lesotho, The Gambia, Eritrea, the Republic of Congo, and the Central African Republic.

“They also want to shut down the consulates in Douala in Cameroon and in Durban, South Africa, and reduce the size of the mission in Mogadishu, Somalia,” Madowo reported.

While the proposal remains under review and has yet to be finalised, the US State Department, the White House, and the Office of Management and Budget have not issued any official comments on the matter.

Meanwhile, the potential impact of these closures is significant, especially in Africa, where US embassies play vital roles in diplomacy, development aid, and regional security cooperation.

Critics have warned that reducing the US diplomatic footprint could weaken American influence on the continent at a time when global competition for strategic partnerships is intensifying.

The proposed downsizing is however expected to also spark concern among diplomats, lawmakers, and international partners, who fear long-term consequences for US foreign policy and global engagement.

No global recession despite US tariffs

0

IMF Managing Director, Kristalina Georgieva IMF Managing Director, Kristalina Georgieva

Trade tariff uncertainty is “literally off the charts” but there will not be a global recession, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) has said.

The international economic group said in its forecast for the world economy that global share prices have dropped “as trade tensions flared” and warned about an “erosion of trust” between countries.

However, it stopped short of predicting a worldwide recession, saying “our new growth projections will include notable markdowns, but not recession”.

The comments come as leaders and businesses respond to US President Donald Trump’s “Liberation Day” tariffs announced on 2 April.

Global stock markets plummeted following the announcement and many have not recovered since – with the FTSE 100 index of the largest firms listed in the UK still 4.6% lower than a month ago.

Meanwhile, predictions of a global recession have risen as firms slash spending and investment amid the uncertainty and some countries respond to Trump with tariffs of their own.

On Wednesday, the World Trade Organization (WTO) forecast that global trade will fall this year because of Trump’s tariffs.

It follows similar comments from the Bank of England, which has said that rising trade tensions from tariffs have “contributed to a material increase in the risk to global growth” and financial stability.

Meanwhile, the European Central Bank (ECB) said on Thursday it had reduced its key interest rate “owing to rising trade tensions”.

But the IMF’s outlook is rosier by contrast. “[This] is a call to respond wisely,” said IMF managing director Kristalina Georgieva on Thursday.

“A better balanced, more resilient world economy is within reach. We must act to secure it.”

She added “all countries must redouble efforts to put their own houses in order” in response to the uncertainty.

She specifically called on Europe to cut down on “restrictions on internal trade in services” and “deepen” its single market.

She also said China needs to increase its social safety net so that there is less “precautionary saving” and said the US government needs to reduce its debt.

CAF fines its president’s club after African Champions League fan disorder

President of the Confederation of African Football Patrice Motsepe talks to media President of the Confederation of African Football Patrice Motsepe talks to media

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has fined its president’s club $100,000 after violent fan clashes at an African Champions League game between two teams that are going to the FIFA Club World Cup in the United States this summer.

Mamelodi Sundowns, owned by Patrice Motsepe – a South African mining billionaire and FIFA vice president – breached safety and security rules hosting an April 1 game against Esperance of Tunisia, CAF said in a disciplinary ruling late Thursday.

Motsepe has been president of African football’s governing body CAF for four years and was re-elected unopposed last month.

The African football body said Sundowns “is required to strictly implement the safety and security measures specified in the CAF regulations, guidelines and directives, particularly in their upcoming matches”.

Esperance was fined $150,000 for the fan misconduct, CAF said, related to clashes in the stands at the quarterfinal, first-leg game.

Sundowns won the first leg 1-0 in Pretoria and advanced to the semifinals after the return game ended 0-0 in Tunis one week later. The South African team on Saturday hosts Al Ahly of Egypt – another Club World Cup team – in the first leg of the semifinals.

Sundowns and Esperance are both coming to the US in June as two of Africa’s four entries in the first 32-team Club World Cup organised by FIFA.

Both qualified because of consistently good results over four years in the CAF Champions League through 2024.

Sundowns has been drawn in a Club World Cup group with Ulsan of South Korea, Borussia Dortmund of Germany and Fluminense of Brazil, playing games in Orlando, Cincinnati and Miami.

Esperance is in a group with Chelsea of England, Brazil’s Flamengo and a third team that was to be Leon, which FIFA disqualified because it is in the same ownership as another Mexican team that qualified, Pachuca. Those games are in Philadelphia and Nashville.

Leon has a May 5 hearing with the Court of Arbitration for Sport in Madrid in its appeal against FIFA’s ruling. The Club World Cup is played in 11 US cities from June 14 to July 13.

Passengers stranded at neoplan station amid vehicle shortage for Easter travel

0

Dozens of passengers travelling to Kwahu, Kumasi, and other parts of the country for the Easter festivities have been left stranded at the Neoplan Station in Accra due to a severe shortage of available vehicles.

On Friday, April 18, Channel One News observed long queues of frustrated commuters who had waited for hours without success. Many passengers expressed deep concerns about the lack of adequate transport arrangements despite the high demand typically associated with the Easter season.
One of the stranded passengers, Alex, who was heading to Techiman, shared his frustration.

“I have been here since morning, around 7:30 am. I am going to Techiman, and there is no car. When you ask the station masters, they say that there are cars on the way, so we should wait, and up till now we have not seen any cars. And this is very troubling and very stressful.”

Another commuter, Queen Mira, echoed similar concerns, lamenting the uncertainty surrounding vehicle availability.

“I have been here since 7 am, and we are told the bus is on the way, but nothing is showing that there is a bus coming. It is a big problem for us.”
As the situation persisted, drivers at the station joined in voicing their grievances. They appealed to the government to step in by providing additional buses during festive periods to help manage the seasonal rush and ease the burden on both passengers and transport operators.

Kennedy Owusu Adei, one of the drivers, noted the challenges on the ground.

“Everything is going on well, but we do not have many cars to transport the passengers to their destination. For festivals like this, I guess the government can come in and provide some buses to aid in easing the tension.”

Prince Ashitey, another driver, noted that beyond the shortage of vehicles, the poor road conditions further worsen the travel experience for both drivers and passengers.

“There are a lot of people here heading to Kwahu, but there are not enough cars to convey them. The road is very bad as well, and before you drive here to Nkawkaw, you’re tired already. We are pleading with the government to come and help us.”

Accra, April 17, 2025 — The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has strongly condemned alleged threats of assault made by Hopeson Yaovi Adorye, a panelist representing the Movement for Change, against Jennifer Oforiwaa Queen, Deputy Director of Communications for the NPP.

The incident reportedly took place during a live broadcast of United Television’s (UTV) Adekye Nsroma morning show, drawing swift criticism from the NPP and other observers concerned about the tone of political discourse.

In a statement signed by the NPP’s Communications Director, Richard Ahiagbah, the party expressed grave concern and underscored the need to protect women’s participation in political dialogue, particularly in media spaces.

“Ghana has made significant strides in driving women’s political participation and amplifying their voices in our national discourse. Threats of assault or actual assault on women for expressing their political views must not be tolerated,” the statement emphasized.

Call for Accountability and Respect in Media Spaces

The NPP urged all media outlets, including UTV, to uphold democratic standards of civility and respect, and to ensure their platforms do not become conduits for intimidation or abuse, especially against women.

The party further stressed that the progress Ghana has made in gender inclusivity in politics must be safeguarded through collective vigilance and responsible conduct.

“We must all work together to preserve the dignity of our democratic space and ensure that everyone—especially women—can speak freely without fear of harassment or violence,” the statement concluded.

‘Settle the debate about Ghana’s founding fathers’ – Haruna Iddrisu to curriculum review committee

0

Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu

The Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has called on the newly established 13-member curriculum review committee to address the longstanding confusion over who truly founded Ghana.

Speaking at the committee’s recent inauguration, he expressed concern that, 68 years after independence, the country still lacks consensus on its founding history.

“Anyone who abandons their past and history loses their way to the future. I’m told this is why we must be intentional about how we teach our children about Ghana’s rich and complex history. So, I’m at a loss that at 68 years, we are still grappling with who the founders of Ghana are, who the founding leader is, or who the founding father was,” he said.

He continued, “This must be a settled matter. In every country, there are founding fathers. It is reasonable to conclude that Dr. Kwame Nkrumah is a founding leader of Ghana. But if, at this age, we still have children asking their parents, ‘Who is the founder of Ghana?’ or ‘Who are the founders of Ghana?’ then there’s a problem.”

Iddrisu stressed the importance of giving children a clear understanding of the nation’s origins.

“At six to eight years old, you shouldn’t be asking who birthed you as a country. I’m sure many of those currently instigating this debate were themselves students of history. Your review of the curriculum must put an end to this issue.”

“I don’t want Ghanaian children to grow up not knowing who their founding fathers were or who their foundational leader was. I expect your review to settle this debate once and for all,” he added.

The controversy resurfaced following an address by former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo on Founder’s Day, during which he dismissed the idea that Dr. Kwame Nkrumah was solely responsible for Ghana’s independence.

“I speak to you this evening rejecting completely the notion that Ghana was founded by one man. While Kwame Nkrumah’s contributions to our independence are undeniable, it is important to acknowledge that the struggle for our nation’s freedom was a collective effort spanning several generations,” Akufo-Addo stated.

His remarks reignited debate, with many questioning the extent of Nkrumah’s role in Ghana’s independence and whether other key figures deserve greater recognition.

Google has illegal online advertising monopoly

0

A US judge has ruled tech giant Google has a monopoly in online advertising technology.

The US Department of Justice, along with 17 US states, sued Google, arguing the tech giant was illegally dominating the technology which determines which adverts should be placed online and where.

This is the second antitrust case Google has lost in a year, after it was ruled the company also had a monopoly on online search.

Google said it would appeal against the decision.

“Publishers have many options and they choose Google because our ad tech tools are simple, affordable and effective,” the firm’s head of regulatory affairs Lee-Ann Mulholland said.

US district judge Leonie Brinkema said in the ruling Google had “wilfully engaged in a series of anticompetitive acts” which enabled it to “acquire and maintain monopoly power” in the market.

“This exclusionary conduct substantially harmed Google’s publisher customers, the competitive process, and, ultimately, consumers of information on the open web,” she said.

Google lost on two counts, while a third was dismissed.

“We won half of this case and we will appeal the other half,” Ms Mulholland said.

“The court found that our advertiser tools and our acquisitions, such as DoubleClick, don’t harm competition.”

The ruling is a significant win for US antitrust enforcers, according to Laura Phillips-Sawyer, a professor at the University of Georgia School of Law.

“It signals that not only are agencies willing to prosecute but also that judges are willing to enforce the law against big tech firms,” she said.

She said the verdict sets an important legal precedent and is likely to affect decision-making in corporate America.

Google’s lawyers had argued the case focused too much on its past activities, and prosecutors ignored other large ad tech providers such as Amazon.

“Google has repeatedly used its market power to self-preference its own products, stifling innovation and depriving premium publishers worldwide of critical revenue needed to sustain high-quality journalism and entertainment,” said Jason Kint, head of Digital Content Next, a trade association representing online publishers.

‘Structural changes’

Google owns large companies on the buyer and seller sides of the online advertising market, as well as an ad exchange which matches demand and supply.

Internet users will not notice a difference online as a result of the decision, said Anupam Chander, professor of law and technology at Georgetown University.

But it affects “the division of monies between advertisers, publishers, and ad service providers”.

“The judge seems willing to order structural changes in Google’s ad exchange practices, which may affect Google’s bottom line somewhat, but don’t seem to necessarily threaten its core value proposition as an advertising middleman,” he added.

In an ongoing series of antitrust lawsuits, the US government argues Google and its parent company Alphabet should be broken up – which could include selling off parts of the company such as the Chrome browser.

The US case will now move to a second “remedies” phase, which could also lead to Alphabet being broken up, said John Kwoka, a professor of economics at Northeastern University.

In September, the UK’s competition watchdog provisionally found Google was using anti-competitive practices to dominate the market for online advertising technology.

Black Stars’ success driven by national motivation, not technical team – Ernest Norgbey

Players of the Black Stars Players of the Black Stars

The Chairman of Parliament’s Select Committee on Youth, Sports, and Culture, Ernest Norgbey, has offered a unique perspective on the recent success of the Black Stars.

After enduring a challenging period, including failing to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), the Black Stars bounced back with spirited performances against Chad and Madagascar in March 2025.

With a new technical team in place, the squad secured six crucial points, significantly boosting their chances of qualifying for the 2026 World Cup.

However, despite these achievements, Norgbey, in an interview with GH One TV, attributed the team’s success not to technical expertise but to strong motivation and the uplifting national spirit surrounding the squad.

“Personally, the success of the Black Stars is not because of technical expediency. I believe it is due to the motivation and aura of the country. I cannot attribute it to the technical bench,” he said.

Following the two critical wins against Chad and Madagascar, the Black Stars now sit atop the group standings with 15 points, three points ahead of second-placed Comoros.

The Regional Communications Manager of Ghana Water Limited (GWL) in Accra East, Nana Yaw Barima Barnie, is urging residents experiencing water supply challenges to report directly to the nearest GWL office for swift intervention.

Speaking on Channel One TV on Friday, April 18, Mr. Barnie emphasized the need for stronger community collaboration in addressing ongoing water supply concerns, particularly in parts of the Greater Accra Region.

His remarks follow recent reports highlighting growing frustrations over inconsistent water flow in several communities.

Mr. Barnie reassured the public that GWL remains committed to resolving issues promptly but stressed the importance of official complaints to trigger support.

He also reminded residents of the essential nature of water, stating, “Without water, life is impossible. We understand this, and we’re ready to help—but we need our customers to reach out.”
