0

Deputy Chief of Staff (Operations), Stan Dogbe, has reaffirmed President Mahama’s commitment to peaceful and democratic governance, stating emphatically that the new administration will not engage in retaliatory politics.

Gov’t initiates moves to reverse public universities renamed by Akufo-Addo

A new bill is being prepared by the government to be introduced in Parliament, through which the C.K. Tedam University of Technology and Applied Sciences (CKT-UTAS), along with several other public universities across the country, will have their names changed.

The announcement was made by the Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, during the swearing-in ceremony of the Governing Council of CKT-UTAS in Accra.

Established in 2021 to equip students with practical and technical competencies for the global employment market, CKT-UTAS has been confronted with various infrastructural challenges that have impeded its academic advancement.

The institution’s name has not been accepted by some stakeholders who have protested against it since its inception.

It was further indicated by the Minister that the proposed renaming is part of a wider policy review aimed at evaluating and possibly altering the names of public universities that were either established or renamed during the administration of former President Nana Akufo-Addo.

“Extensive consultations have been held with members of the academic community, traditional leaders, alumni bodies, student representatives, and civil society organisations. Consequently, it is likely that the name ‘C.K. Tedam University of Technology and Applied Sciences’ will be changed—potentially in line with the original founding vision,” Mr Iddrisu noted.

He added that a general bill is expected to be brought before Parliament, under which the renaming of various public universities established or renamed under former President Akufo-Addo’s tenure will be considered.

It was clarified by the Minister that the move is not intended to diminish the contributions of individuals whom these institutions were named after. “This is not to suggest that such individuals are unworthy of recognition; rather, the renaming is being proposed in order to ensure alignment with the founding principles and historical identities of these institutions,” he explained.

The formalisation of the renaming process is expected to be undertaken through the tabling of a bill to be laid in Parliament.

The Deputy Chief of Staff in charge of Operations, Stanislav Xoese Dogbe, has reiterated President John Dramani Mahama’s unwavering commitment to upholding the rule of law, strengthening democratic principles, and fostering a style of governance that welcomes constructive criticism.

While receiving the petition from political parties demonstrating against the suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Sackey Torkornoo at the Jubilee House on Monday, May 5, 2025, Deputy Chief of Staff Stan Dogbe emphasised that President Mahama does not subscribe to the culture of retaliatory politics often witnessed under previous administrations.

Making his point clear, Stan Dogbe criticised the previous administration for engaging in acts of retaliatory politics, highlighting such practices as detrimental to democratic governance.

“Let me say that we are happy that your process started this morning and has ended very peacefully. That in itself is a very strong message about the democracy that President Mahama wants to instill in our dear country.

“If it were the case like this over the past eight years, I’m sure that the retaliatory politics that you talk about wouldn’t have been the case. You referencing retaliatory politics is an admission that the eight years of president Akufo-Addo and Bawumia were not the best. You can be assured however, that President Mahama as every Ghanaian knows, is not that politician. President Mahama does not believe in retaliatory politics,” he said.

He, however, assured the demonstrators that such practices will not be tolerated under the current administration, emphasising that President Mahama’s government is committed to respecting the views of its critics and political opponents, and upholding the principles of inclusive and democratic governance.

“We will work together with you and all the political parties and your petition will be giving the due response,” he added.

The demonstration, organised by political parties and led by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) under the banner #SaveTheJudiciaryDemo, marched from the Supreme Court to the Jubilee House, where they presented a petition to the president.

ECG installs mobile transformer in Tseaddo to meet growing power demand

0

In response to rising electricity demand in Tseaddo and surrounding areas, the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), Sub-Transmission Accra, has begun installing a mobile transformer to enhance power supply and improve overall system reliability.

The mobile unit, rated at 20/26 MVA and operating at 33/11 kV, was transported to Tseaddo at 2:00 AM today for installation.

It will temporarily support part of the load currently served by the La Primary Substation. The project is fully funded by ECG.

Communities expected to benefit include Tseaddo, La, Teshie, and nearby areas. This initiative is part of ECG’s broader strategy to improve power quality, boost operational efficiency, and support socio-economic development in these communities.

Although the mobile transformer is a temporary measure, it plays a critical role in ensuring continuous power supply until the permanent upgrade of the La Primary Substation is completed.

Ghanaian actress, Sandra Ababio Ghanaian actress, Sandra Ababio

Ghanaian actress Sandra Ababio has revealed her desire to get married by December 2025, although she admits she has not yet found a suitable partner.

Speaking in an interview on ‘Ucook’ with Empress Gifty on May 4, 2025, Sandra opened up on her current relationship status, stating that she is available for marriage.

“I’m not married yet. If I were, I would have told you I was getting married. I don’t have any man in the U.S, I don’t want any trouble. I’m in Ghana, so I can’t have a man outside the country. If I’m to have a partner, he has to be in Ghana,” she stated.

Sandra explained that although she enjoys travelling, it’s purely for the purpose of gaining fresh ideas to bring back home.

“For now, I’m all alone, so if anyone wants to marry me, I’m available. I’ve broken up with the one I was with. I can date you today and break up with you the next day. I’m a bit difficult,” she added.

She further admitted she feels apprehensive about marriage due to its demands and challenges.

“I wish to marry in December but I haven’t found anyone yet. I’m a bit scared of marriage. The problems that come with it are too much, the instructions and responsibilities are overwhelming.”

Aside from her personal life, Sandra also shared updates on her latest business venture.

She said she now runs a real estate company called SA Properties which specialises in helping foreigners acquire land and build homes in Ghana.

“I own SA Properties. We deal in land sales, housing and building properties, especially for foreigners who struggle to find legitimate deals. Many people get scammed trying to acquire land but now estate agencies like ours make it easier. We offer installment plans and once the house is ready, clients can come to Ghana to inspect their properties. It’s very simple and we’re legit,” she expounded.

Vicky Bright slams political hypocrisy, calls for consistent application of rule of law

0

Victoria Bright, Former legal advisor to ex-President John Agyekum Kufuor Victoria Bright, Former legal advisor to ex-President John Agyekum Kufuor

A former legal advisor to ex-President John Agyekum Kufuor, Vicky Bright, has criticised the current political climate, suggesting hypocrisy and duplicity among some political figures.

She argued that the rule of law should be upheld consistently, regardless of which party is in power.

“The rule of law does not bend based on which party holds power,” she indicated during an interview on JoyNews AM Show on May 5, 2025.

According to Vicky, Ghana’s democracy is being undermined by selective outrage and partisan responses to issues of national importance.

“Authenticity and consistency should guide our political actions,” she stated.

She added that the selective approach to justice and governance not only weakens public trust in institutions, but also erodes the foundations of Ghana’s democracy.

“This hypocrisy and duplicity undermines the very foundations of our democracy. We’ve seen this before — selective outrage does not build a better Ghana,” Vicky emphasised.

Vicky Bright also stated that during the tenure of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, similar actions to those currently being criticised were met with silence by some political figures and commentators.

“When Nana Addo did similar things, many chose silence. Today, those same voices cry foul. This is a troubling trend of double standards,” she added.

I got pregnant for a sick man I was caring for, I don’t know what to do

File photo of a worried woman File photo of a worried woman

Dear GhanaWeb,

There’s a disabled man who lives next door to us in the same fenced compound. He uses a wheelchair, cannot speak, and has limited mobility, but he understands what’s happening around him and communicates through gestures. He lives with his only brother and the brother’s wife.

I’ve come to learn that he was born with this condition. He used to live with their parents, but after they passed away, his care became the responsibility of his brother.

Unfortunately, I’ve noticed that his brother’s wife often mistreats him, especially when her husband is not around. Although the man is fragile and unable to speak, he deserves compassion and proper care. Instead, she pushes him outside and leaves him in the hot sun for hours at a time. When I asked why, she claimed he had urinated on himself and needed to air out to dry.

I felt deeply sorry for him and raised concerns, but ever since then, she has stopped speaking to me. I’ve found myself at a loss about how to bring this to his brother’s attention. When the brother is home, his wife pretends to care for the man lovingly, hiding her true behavior.

I’ve seen this poor man left outside with no food or water, tears silently rolling down his cheeks. It breaks my heart, but I don’t know the right way to intervene.

One day, after I confronted her again about the way she was treating him, she snapped and said that if I was so concerned, I should take him to my place and bring him back before her husband returned, because she was tired of looking after him. Out of frustration and sympathy, I took the man into my home.

I bathed him, fed him, and made sure he was comfortable. I did that for a few days, then I started noticing how huge his manhood was. I started taking interest in it, then I realised that if I touched it seductively, it rises.

I’m sorry to say this but the man become more like my sex toy ever since. I go for him daily. Though I take good care of him, I also sleep with him. I think he like it because he’s always eager to be at my place. I’m currently pregnant for him, I can’t go and tell them that their sick relative is responsible.

I’m also 35 so I don’t want to abort it. I keep asking myself, what if I deliver a child like him. I’m getting scared. I like the man’s manhood though I can’t and won’t marry someone like him or have a child like him.

Should I tell the man’s brother about it? Or should I abort the pregnancy? Honestly this wasn’t intentional, I was just curious and wanted to have fun. I feel sorry for myself for being single sometimes.

The man’s brother is rich and they live in a mansion. I’m just perching in a small house behind theirs.

If I should tell him I’m pregnant for his sick brother, do you think he’ll compensate me financially? I need help with what to do.

President Mahama deserves commendation for appointing non-partisan SC judges

National Coordinator of the District Road Improvement Programme, Nii Lantey Vanderpuye National Coordinator of the District Road Improvement Programme, Nii Lantey Vanderpuye

The National Coordinator of the District Road Improvement Programme (DRIP), Nii Lantey Vanderpuye, has praised President John Dramani Mahama for nominating seven new Justices to the Supreme Court.

Vanderpuye described the president’s nominations as non-partisan and credible, highlighting Mahama’s commitment to judicial excellence.

Under Article 143(2) of the 1992 Constitution, President Mahama has nominated seven justices from the Court of Appeal to the Supreme Court, pending approval by Parliament.

During an interview on Breakfast Daily on Channel One TV, Vanderpuye commended the president for selecting individuals without any public records of partisan bias or political affiliations.

“No one can stand anywhere and say that these people have in one way or the other appeared in a political color, appeared on any political platform. These are the people when you nominate or propose, it becomes acceptable to all. And I think that is the way we have to build our judicial system,” he stated.

Vanderpuye pointed out that perceptions of political bias in the judiciary have contributed to a decline in public confidence, as evidenced by the Afrobarometer Report.

He added that the recent nominations are a deliberate effort to address this issue.

“We needed to sanitise the system. And that is why I expect that we’ll have some commendations for President Mahama for being able to choose these people, who other people will not have any adverse findings of any perception about, and rather have confidence that these people, when they go to the Supreme Court, will be able to advance the course of justice,” he asserted.

This development has sparked discussions about the importance of merit-based appointments to the judiciary.

The nominations are now awaiting parliamentary approval and vetting.

Ghana tops Fitch Solutions list in NPLs, banking sector labeled as fragile

0

UK-based rating firm Fitch Solutions UK-based rating firm Fitch Solutions

UK-based rating firm Fitch Solutions has disclosed that Ghana’s banking sector is the most vulnerable among the top ten Sub-Saharan African (SSA) countries, with a high Non-Performing Loan (NPL) ratio of 21.8% and a relatively weak Capital Adequacy Ratio (CAR) of 14.05%.

According to Fitch Solutions’ latest report titled “US Tariffs Increase Risks for SSA Banks”, Ghana tops the list in NPLs and ranks third-lowest in CAR, underscoring the fragility of its banking sector.

The rating agency attributed the sector’s weakened fundamentals to the fallout from the Domestic Debt Exchange Programme (DDEP) and a persistently high interest rate environment.

Despite these challenges, Fitch noted that banks across the SSA region are generally better positioned to weather upcoming headwinds, supported by robust capital buffers and relatively stable asset quality in most markets.

“We anticipate improvements in most sectors’ capital, driven by regulatory enhancements in markets such as Nigeria and Kenya, alongside improving economic conditions in most markets,” the report stated.

Fitch expects interest rates across most SSA countries to decline in 2025, a development it believes will support improvements in loan quality.

Moreover, it noted that the exceptionally high profits banks have recorded in recent years, largely driven by aggressive interest rate hikes, will provide a financial cushion for institutions in the coming year.

Ghana gear up for Senegal clash tonight

0

Players of the Ghana U-20 team Players of the Ghana U-20 team

Ghana’s Black Satellites face a stern test on Monday, May 5, 2025, as they take on defending champions Senegal in a crucial Group B clash at the ongoing U-20 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt.

The match will be held at the New Suez Stadium.  Kick-off is scheduled for 6 PM local time, with both teams seeking their first win of the tournament after identical starts.

Ghana was held to a 1-1 draw by DR Congo in their opening match, while Senegal also shared the spoils in a 1-1 draw with the Central African Republic.

Despite failing to secure all three points, Black Satellites head coach Desmond Ofei is expected to stick with much of the same line-up.

However, CD Lugo midfielder Jerry Afriyie could return to the starting XI after making a significant impact off the bench in the game against DR Congo.

Abdul Sulemana, who earned the Man of the Match award in that game, is set to retain his place in midfield.

In goal, Gidios Aseako is expected to continue, supported by a back four comprising Andrews Adjabeng, McCarthy Ofori, Aaron Essel in central defence, and Dacosta Antwi at left-back.

Musibau Aziz, who scored Ghana’s goal in the opener, will once again lead the line following an impressive performance.

Senegal, meanwhile, is likely to name an unchanged side, with Mouhamed Sissokho in goal.

Cheikh Thiam, who scored in their opening game, is expected to anchor the midfield, while Ibrahim Dieng, despite not scoring, should continue to lead the line for the defending champions.

This encounter will mark only the second-ever meeting between the two sides at the U-20 AFCON.

Their first meeting came in 2019, when Senegal won 2-0.  However, Ghana avenged that defeat with a 1-0 victory over the Young Lions of Teranga in the semi-finals of the 2023 African Games, a tournament Ghana hosted and won.

With regional pride and tournament momentum on the line, this match promises to be a defining moment in Group B.  A win for Ghana would seal qualification to the knockout stages and send a strong message about their title ambitions, while Senegal will be desperate to avoid falling behind in their title defence.

All 133 cardinal electors arrive in Rome ahead of May 7 conclave

0

Vatican City. File photo. Vatican City. File photo.

The Director of the Holy See Press Office, Matteo Bruni, has announced and confirmed that all 133 Cardinal electors have arrived in Rome ahead of the papal conclave set to begin on May 7, 2025.

This was announced during a briefing on May 5, 2025.

According to the Vatican News, Bruni stated that a total of 179 Cardinals, including the 133 electors eligible to vote, participated in the tenth General Congregation held earlier in the day.

He confirmed that preparations are well underway for the start of the conclave, which will take place in the Sistine Chapel.

“All 133 Cardinal electors are now present in Rome, and every effort is being made to ensure a smooth and prayerful transition into the conclave. The church stands united as it prepares to discern its next shepherd,” he indicated.

Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re, Dean of the College of Cardinals, informed the congregation that Cardinal Camerlengo Kevin Farrell had conducted a lottery on Saturday afternoon to assign rooms for the electors.

All Cardinal electors will be accommodated either at the Casa Santa Marta or the adjacent old Santa Marta residence.

Bruni said that Cardinals will be able to travel from their accommodations to the Sistine Chapel via a secured route, with the option to walk.

He emphasised that all necessary logistical and security arrangements are in place to ensure a smooth and solemn transition into the conclave.

During Monday’s congregation, 26 interventions were made, addressing a wide range of issues.

Topics included canon law, the role of the Vatican City State, the Church’s missionary identity, and its social mission through Caritas.

Participants also reflected on recent history, recalling the spiritual significance of prayer during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Discussion also turned to hopes for the next pope. Several Cardinals voiced the desire for a shepherd close to the people, capable of fostering unity in a world facing fragmentation, war, and ecological crisis.

Other issues raised included the role of women in the Church, the importance of family and vocations, and the foundational teachings of the Second Vatican Council, particularly Dei Verbum.

“There is a deep sense of responsibility and hope among the Cardinals. Many are praying for a pope who will be close to the people, a unifying figure in a divided world,” he added.

Bruni noted that while journalists will not be permitted inside the Sistine Chapel due to security restrictions enforced by the Vatican Gendarmerie, official images of the prepared interior will be made available to the press.

Cardinals are expected to begin checking into their assigned rooms as early as Tuesday morning, marking the final phase of preparation before the conclave commences.

Government is ‘clueless’ about content creation

Ghanaian dancehall artiste, Shatta Wale, has taken to social media to call out the government and the creative arts industry for what he describes as a lack of understanding and appreciation for the work of content creators.

In a post shared on his X page, Shatta Wale expressed frustration at the neglect content creators face from the very institutions meant to support the arts.

“I don’t think the creative arts industry in Ghana and even Ghana and Ghana government truly understands who content creators are,” he wrote.

According to the On God hitmaker, content creation is not some random hustle rather it’s a full-time job, a business, and for many, a lifeline.

He painted a picture of creators who work tirelessly behind the scenes, often with little to no support.

“These individuals have chosen this path, sacrificing their time, investing in equipment, building teams, and creating platforms from scratch. It’s not just a hustle; it’s a serious business,” he stated.

The “dancehall king” went further to explain the connection between content creation and the broader entertainment ecosystem, emphasising that the two cannot be separated.

“We need to understand that entertainment and content creation go hand in hand, and with the right support, these platforms can grow and contribute massively to the industry,” he explained.

Shatta Wale also had words for those who downplay the effort it takes to build a career online.

He took aim at the common stereotype that YouTubers and digital creators are simply “making money from YouTube” as if it happens overnight without skill, strategy, or consistency.

“Please don’t say they’re ‘making money from YouTube’ like it’s some overnight success. The education and discipline required to build on YouTube is far deeper than what you’ve been told. It’s not easy, my guy,” he stated.

Shatta Wale further revealed plans to spotlight and uplift content creators through personal interviews.

“That’s why I’m starting interviews with these creators, #Headless, #Savageroom, #Codemicky, #SammyFlexTV, #ZionFelix, and many others, not because of what I’ll gain, but because I believe in helping those who are building something real for Ghana,” he concluded.

Mahama slaps Asset Declaration defaulters with 4-month salary forfeiture

0

President John Dramani Mahama has taken disciplinary action against political appointees who failed to meet the mandatory asset declaration deadline of March 31, 2025.

According to the President, information from the Auditor General revealed that some appointees in his administration failed to comply with the directive.

As a consequence, he has ordered that the officials forfeit four months’ salary, which is to be donated to the Ghana Medical Trust Fund.

“On 18th of February 2025, I set a deadline of 31st March for all appointees who are taking office or being nominated at the time to declare assets. An update provided by the Auditor General to my office indicates that some of you failed to meet that deadline.

“For all those who were appointed or nominated before 31st March 2025 and failed to meet the deadline, you are forfeiting three months of salary to be donated to the Ghana Medical Trust Fund named after me, Mahama Cares.

“In addition to one month’s salary that I have asked all appointees to donate to the Mahama Cares Trust Fund. So it means that those who omitted to declare their assets by the date, you are paying four months’ salary to Mahama Cares,” he said.

President Mahama further disclosed that all appointees who fail to declare assets by May 7,2025, will be dismissed.

Trent Alexander-Arnold’s top five Liverpool moments

0

The news that Liverpool fans all dreaded was announced on Monday, as Trent Alexander-Arnold’s his move from his boyhood club after spending 20 years at Anfield.

Whilst there has been no official confirmation on his next, journalist Fabrizio Romano broke the news of his move to Real Madrid including his famous line “here we go”.

The BBC later broke the news that Madrid were in talks to finalise the deal.

Whilst there is still time for Alexander-Arnold to perform a U-turn, it appears that the right-back is going to be on the move to Madrid this summer.

This move has angered a lot of Liverpool fans, with a local lad allowing their contract to run down and move on a free transfer.

There is bound to be a lot of hurt, but it would be remiss to not look back over his time at the club and all the success he has had.

In 352 appearances across all competitions, he has recorded 23 goals and 92 assists. He also has the record for the most assists for a defender in the history of the Premier League, with 64 at time of writing.

Since making his first team debut for the club, Alexander-Arnold has won all there is to win with a Champions League, FA Cup, two League Cups and two Premier League titles sending his trohohy count to eight with the Merseyside side.

3Sports take a look at Alexander-Arnold’s top five moments in a Liverpool shirt.

1. Trent Arnold silencing the Etihad Satdium

Liver pool footballer Trent Alexander-Alnord silenced the Etihad Stadium to earn a point in the 1-1 heavyweight clash between Manchester City and Liverpool FC yesterday.

Match day 13 of the English Premier League held significant importance for the defending champions of the league, Manchester City as they sought to solidify their first-place position in this year’s edition of the English Premier League and better their head-to-head records against the Merseyside giants.

The defending champions started the match on the front foot, pressurizing their opponents and dominating the game in terms of possession and chance creation action.

Their efforts eventually paid off as they were rewarded with a goal in the 27th minute of the game from their main marksman, Erling Haaland.
After the recess, Manchester City started from where they left off with the hopes of doubling their lead, but their aspirations were shattered as they were punished by a brilliant Trent Alexander Arnold strike to level the game.

The hardwork paid off in the 80th minute when Mohammed Salah pulled the ball back to Arnold on the edge of the box, with the latter beating Ederson with a low fine strike into the bottom left hand corner of the net to ensure parity.

2. His Premier League titles with Liverpool.(2019/20 and 2024/25)

Liverpool had last won the Premier League in 1990 and a year after their historic storm in Europe, the Merseyside giant won their first EPL title since 1990 after clinching 99 points. In the season, the fullback was instrumental for the Reds, scoring four goals and assisting 13 times.

In the 2024/25 season, his last with his boyhood club, the Englishman was pivotal for the six-time Champions League winners as they won their record-equaling 20th Premier League title, putting them level with bitter rivals Manchester United. Despite contractual issues, the seasoned fullback delivered an all-around performance throughout the season, scoring three goals and assisting nine times.

3. Winning Liverpool’s sixth champions league

Trent Alexander-Arnold played a pivotal role in Liverpool’s 2018/19 Champions League campaign, contributing significantly in both defense and attack. He recorded  four assists in 11 games.

One of his most memorable moments came in the semifinal against Barcelona, where his quick-thinking corner kick helped spark a remarkable comeback.

After Barcelona’s 3-0 win in the first leg, Liverpool staged an incredible turnaround at Anfield, ultimately overturning the deficit to advance to the final.

4. His Anfield performance against Barcelona in the UCL semis

Liverpool went into the second leg of their 2018/19 Champions League final against Barcelona 3-0 down.

This is after their heavy defeat in the Nou Camp. With Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino ruled out of the game, many felt that the tie was over, despite the scoreline in Spain not doing the team justice.

However, Liverpool unleased the spirit of Istanbul at Anfield, with a Divock Origi goal and a Georginio Wijnaldum double bringing the tie level. Their work was not done here.

Liverpool won a corner in the 79th minute and Alexander-Arnold caught Barcelona asleep.

His corner found he foot of the Belgian to the complete disbelief of the Catalan side. Klopp’s side manage to hold on and advance to the final.

Against Tottenham Hotspur in Madrid of all places, Liverpool won the game 2-0 and Alexander-Arnold was a European champion.

Looking back, given the quality of the Barcelona team and the home atmosphere, the semi final second leg felt more like the final and his quick thinking will always be remembered.

5. Introduction himself in Germany

Prior to the start of the 2017/18 season, Nathaniel Clyne was expected to start for Liverpool in the right back spot. Alexander-Arnold was an afterthought.

However, injury to Clyne meant that Alexander-Arnold was given the chance to start in a Champions League qualifier against 1899 Hoffenheim in Germany. Liverpool were awarded a free kick in the 35th minute. Stood centrally, the youngster stepped up and hit a sublime effort into the back of the net, curling overthe wall and into the bottom right corner.

Much to the misfortune of Clyne, Alexander-Arnold did not look back. This was a game that firmly put his name on the footballing map.

As Alexander-Arnold bids farewell to Liverpool, fans will cherish the memories of his incredible journey with the Reds.

His dedication, skill, and passion will forever be etched in the annals of Liverpool’s history.

While his departure may be bittersweet, his legacy will continue to inspire future generations of Reds.

The Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo Markin presented the petition on the group’s behalf to the Deputy Chief of Staff in Charge of Operations Stan Dogbe at the Jubliee House.

Addressing the crowd after presenting the petition, Afenyo-Markin reaffirmed the coalition’s commitment to upholding judicial independence in the country.

He also cautioned judges against being swayed by promises of promotions.

“We stand with you and we will not falter until judicial independence is restored and protected. And to those judges who are being promised promotions, just to cow you, remember, just today it is Torkornoo, tomorrow it will be you,” he said.

Ghana Health Service reshuffles senior staff in major structural overhaul

0

The Ghana Health Service (GHS) has reshuffled and reassigned over a dozen key officials in a move the new Director-General says was aimed at strengthening health delivery across the country.

In a letter communicating the changes expected to take effect from May 19, 2025, the Acting Director-General, Professor Samuel Kaba Akoriyea, said the restructuring forms part of ongoing institutional reforms intended to boost operational efficiency and improve public health outcomes.

The changes affect senior staff within regional health directorates, national health programmes, and the GHS headquarters.

Regions impacted include Greater Accra, Ashanti, Northern, Central, and Ahafo.

At the heart of the reshuffle is a realignment of leadership within critical national programmes.

Those in malaria, HIV/AIDS, immunisation, and non-communicable diseases have been reassigned in a rotation strategy that is seeing experienced officers taking on new responsibilities across both national and regional levels.

Among those redeployed is Dr Hilarius A.K. Abiwu, who is leaving his role as Deputy Director of Public Health in the Northern Region to become acting Programme Manager for the National Malaria Elimination Programme at the GHS headquarters.

Similarly, Dr Emmanuel A. A. Teviu, previously based in the Ashanti Region, assumes the role of Acting Programme Manager for the National AIDS Control Programme.

Dr Selorm Kutsoati, who served as District Director for La Nkwantanang-Madina in Greater Accra, has been appointed Acting Programme Manager for the Expanded Programme on Immunisation.

Meanwhile, Dr Wallace Odiko-Ollennu, formerly the Deputy Chief Dental Officer, will now lead the Non-Communicable Diseases Unit in an acting capacity.

As part of the broader reshuffle, current Programme Manager for the AIDS Control Programme, Dr Stephen Ayisi Addo, has been posted to the Northern Region as Acting Deputy Director of Public Health.

Other key changes include the reassignment of Dr Efua Commeh from the NCDs unit to serve as Acting District Director for La Nkwantanang-Madina, and Dr Andrew Ayim’s redeployment from GHS headquarters to Ahafo Region as Deputy Director of Public Health.

Dr Keziah Maim also takes up a new post as Acting Deputy Director of Public Health.

The GHS has instructed all regional and divisional directors to facilitate smooth transitions, emphasising that handovers must not disrupt ongoing services.

Officers are required to notify the headquarters upon assuming their new roles.

Vice-President of the Ghana Football Association, Mark Addo, paid a morale-boosting visit to the Black Satellites camp ahead of their clash with Senegal at the TotalEnergies U-20 AFCON Egypt 2025.

Mr. Addo assured the players of the full support of the Ghanaian people and conveyed warm greetings from the Minister for Sports and Recreation, Hon. Kofi Iddie Adams, and the President of the Ghana Football Association, Mr. Kurt E.S Okraku.

He commended the team for their efforts in the opening match and urged them to maintain unity and determination as they aim for victory. “Your opening match was clearly a difficult one as the team from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) proved to be strong contenders. However, your performance was good and gives Ghanaians the belief that you can go far in this tournament. Stay together and fight to bring glory to Ghana,” he encouraged.

The visit comes at a crucial moment in the tournament, with Ghana hoping to secure a place in the quarterfinals and eventually qualify for the FIFA U-20 World Cup Chile 2025.

I don’t care if you have money or not, I prefer your personality

Ghanaian actress Sandra Ababio has disclosed that she prefers personality over name or riches when it comes to selecting a partner.

In a recent interview on ‘UCook’ with Empress Gifty on May 5, 2025, Sandra Ababio, while discussing her ideal partner, stated that material possessions or fame do not influence her choice in a partner.

“I don’t care about who you are; I care more about personality more than anything. If you don’t have money but your personality attracts me, I like it.

“I’m not someone who is into what you have or who you are, whether you are a celebrity or the son of a rich man. I don’t care. There might be people who do not have much, but they have potential,” she said.

Asked if she would ever consider dating a rich married man, the actress said she would never consider such as she is ‘selfish’ when it comes to her romantic relationships.

“I will never be someone’s side chick or date a married man; I am very possessive. I can’t be sharing a man. I don’t want a case where I call him and he’s like he can’t come because his wife is around,” she said.

Ghanaian rapper M.anifest paid a visit to West Ham star Mohammed Kudus on Sunday, May 4, 2025, as the Hammers drew 1-1 with Tottenham Hotspur in a London derby at the London Stadium.

The award-winning rapper was captured in a warm exchange with the Ghanaian international after the match, showing his support for Kudus in a video shared on his Instagram page.

“Love to the bro @kudus_mohammed. Keep soaring. Thank you for your hospitality @westham,” M.anifest wrote, alongside footage of the two embracing and chatting.

Kudus, who played the full 90 minutes, couldn’t add to his tally of four goals and two assists this season but still showed flashes of his usual energy and creativity.

He had scored in his previous outing against Brighton and now has 29 Premier League appearances under his belt in his second season in the English top flight.

In a show of appreciation, Kudus presented Manifest with a customised West Ham jersey after the match.

On the pitch, West Ham captain Jarrod Bowen scored his 10th league goal of the season, cancelling out an early strike from Spurs’ Wilson Odobert.

Despite a few late chances, including a close-range Bowen header saved by Guglielmo Vicario, the game ended in a draw, keeping West Ham just above the relegation zone in 17th place.

Rwanda in talks to receive migrants deported from US

0

Olivier Nduhungirehe, Minister for Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of Rwanda Olivier Nduhungirehe, Minister for Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of Rwanda

Rwanda is in the early stages of talks to receive immigrants deported from the United States, Rwandan Foreign Minister Olivier Nduhungirehe said on television late on Sunday.

Rwanda has in recent years positioned itself as a destination country for migrants that Western countries would like to remove, despite concerns by rights groups that Kigali does not respect some of the most fundamental human rights.

Kigali signed an agreement with Britain in 2022 to take in thousands of asylum seekers from the UK before the deal was scrapped last year by then newly-elected Prime Minister Keir Starmer.

“We are in discussions with the United States,” Nduhungirehe said in an interview with the state broadcaster Rwanda TV.

“It has not yet reached a stage where we can say exactly how things will proceed, but the talks are ongoing…still in the early stages.”

Trump launched a sweeping crackdown on immigration and attempted to freeze the U.S. refugee resettlement program after the start of his second term in January.

His administration has pushed aggressively to deport immigrants who are in the country illegally and other non-citizens.

The United Nations refugee agency (UNHCR) warned there was a risk some migrants sent to Rwanda could be returned to countries from which they had fled. Kigali denied the allegations and accused UNHCR of lying.

Last month the U.S. deported to Rwanda a resettled Iraqi refugee whom it had long tried to extradite in response to Iraqi government claims that he worked for the Islamic State, according to a U.S. official and an internal email.

The Supreme Court in April temporarily blocked Trump’s administration – which has invoked a rarely used wartime law – from deporting a group of Venezuelan migrants it accused of being gang members.

Breaking Barriers, Creating Awareness…Building An Inclusive Future For Persons With Autism

0

The Writer

The UN General Assembly in 2007 adopted 2nd April as World Autism Awareness Day, thus, we must shine a light on the challenges and various barriers and hurdles people on the autism spectrum are faced with in society, in schools, workplaces and in the community at large.

It is also a day and month set aside primarily to promote acceptance and commemorate inspiring achievements of persons with Autism.

Autism Spectrum Disorder is defined by the National Institutes of health as a neurological and developmental disorder that affects how people interact with others, communicate, learn and behave.

According to the World Health Organisation, 1 in 100 children has autism and while some children with autism can live independently, others have severe disabilities and require lifelong care and support.

In 2023 CDC reported that 1 in 36 children in the U.S have been diagnosed with Autism, this has risen from the previous rate of 1 in 44 children. This year’s theme, “Advancing Neurodiversity and the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)”, highlights the intrinsic link between neurodiversity and achieving global sustainability.

It amplifies how implementing inclusive policies and practices is not only beneficial for autistic individuals worldwide but is also a catalyst for realizing the SDGs.

Throughout the month, global experts, policymakers, and autistic voices have engaged in keynote presentations, interactive panels, and collaborative sessions, with a focus on developing actionable strategies for integrating neurodiversity into policies that drive accessibility, equality, and innovation across various sectors, including inclusive healthcare, quality education, employment opportunities, the reduction of inequalities, and the development of autism-friendly urban environments and communities.

In alignment with the global focus on actionable strategies for neurodiversity and inclusion, Ghana must prioritise critical reforms within its educational and health policies.

To effectively support individuals on the autism spectrum and foster an inclusive society, a fundamental review of these existing policies is paramount. This review must lead to policy reforms that mandate comprehensive training for health workers and early years educators in the early identification of autism indicators and communication delays.

To further strengthen support systems in Ghana, all early childhood development centers and basic schools should be mandated to have a teacher specifically trained in autism to provide tailored assistance to children on the spectrum.

To ensure that essential interventions are affordable for parents, a key recommendation is for the National Health Insurance Scheme to absorb a significant percentage of the costs associated with speech, occupational and behavorial therapy.

Furthermore, institutions should actively promote inclusive workplaces by employing neurodivergent individuals in mainstream roles.

Ultimately, the primary challenge faced by many individuals on the autism spectrum is a lack of societal awareness, leading to misunderstanding.

This neurological difference should not result in ostracization or shunning but rather in complete integration into our communities.

While acknowledging that significant progress is still required in our society, every individual can contribute to building a more sensitive, understanding, and accommodating society for neurodivergent individuals.

As we draw the curtain on Autism awareness month let us all reaffirm our commitment to building a society where individuals with autism live without fear of exploitation, free from judgment and discrimination, and are fully included with the necessary support to thrive and realise their full potential.

Linda Ocloo accuses MMDCE aspirants of undermining Mahama’s nominees

0

Greater Accra Regional Minister, Linda Ocloo, has accused some shortlisted Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executive (MMDCE) aspirants of influencing assembly members to vote against presidential nominees.

Her comments follow the Shai Osudoku District Assembly’s rejection of Ignatius Godfred Dordoe, the President’s nominee for District Chief Executive. Dordoe secured 17 out of 32 votes, falling short of the required number for confirmation.

Speaking to journalists in Accra on Monday, May 5, Ocloo issued a strong warning, “If assemblies fail to confirm the President’s nominees, no new candidates will be considered for those roles.

“If we should instigate people not to vote for the presidential nominee by disgracing the president, if you think because your name is shortlisted, you will be appointed, it’s a lie. We’ll make sure that if you don’t appoint the nominee, those shortlisted we will also make sure that they will not be appointed.

“Even if we have to reappoint someone we will go outside the box to do that. We are not going to advise. We are going to re-present the candidate…Even if thousand times, we are going to re-present the candidate,” she said.

Police, Association of Private Security Organisations of Ghana partner to standardize and strengthen private security sector

0

The Ghana Police Service in collaboration with officials of the Association of Private Security Organizations of Ghana (APSOG) held a strategic meeting to strengthen collaboration and streamline the operations of private security services across the country.

The meeting, which took place earlier this month at the Police Headquarters in Accra, focused on the pressing need to develop a unified code of conduct to regulate private security operations in Ghana.

Discussions during the meeting highlighted the importance of standardizing practices across the private security industry. Key areas identified for standardization include recruitment procedures, training in general guard duties, cash-in-transit operations, event security, close protection services, private investigations, electronic security and alarm systems, as well as escort services.

Speaking on behalf of the Ghana Police Service, the Director-General of Private Security Organisations, Commissioner of Police (COP) Dr. Daniel Afriyie, acknowledged the vital role private security organisations play in complementing the efforts of the Ghana Police Service.

To foster continuous cooperation, the meeting proposed the creation of a common platform that would allow private security personnel to report criminal activities within their operational areas and share relevant intelligence with the Police.

The meeting concluded with a mutual commitment to deepen collaboration and advance national security efforts through enhanced cooperation between public and private security actors.

In attendance were the National Chairman of APSOG, Dr. Ibrahim Abdul-Rahim Usunaba; the National Secretary, Mr. Isaac Bondze; and the Association’s Research Officer, Rev. Alex Budu-Larbi. Representing the Ghana Police Service were Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Ernest Kwoffie and Sergeant Emmanuel Ofori.

Hands off the judiciary! – Ahiagbah cautions Mahama

0

Director of Communications for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Richard Ahiagbah, has cautioned President John Mahama against overstepping his boundaries following the suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo.

The outspoken NPP spokesperson argues that President Mahama’s actions, in response to anti-Chief Justice petitions and the advice of the Council of State, amount to interference with the judiciary.

In his view, President Mahama is seeking the removal of the Chief Justice to appoint his preferred candidate, who would pursue a National Democratic Congress (NDC) agenda.

He believes this move must be stopped to safeguard the democracy that has been built over the years.

“We believe democracy must be preserved for ourselves and for posterity. President Mahama must take his hands off the judiciary,” he warned during a major protest by the opposition NPP and its allies on Monday, 5 May.

“It is not about the processes to remove the Chief Justice but about the politics of His Excellency John Dramani Mahama and the NDC. You heard them in opposition; they said NDC lawyers must be ready to take up positions on the bench. What they are doing is undermining the judiciary in order to remove the Chief Justice and install one who is amenable to the NDC’s agenda.”

“We believe that is wrong. That is unacceptable and injurious to our democracy. It is not about the law, but about their politics,” he fumed.

Clad in red clothing, armbands, and headgear, the demonstrators took to the streets in large numbers, marching through the main roads of Accra.

Led by the Minority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, the protesters submitted petitions to the Judiciary, Parliament, and the Presidency, urging President Mahama to revoke the suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo.

Meanwhile, Mr Afenyo-Markin also condemned the petitions that initiated the process leading to the Chief Justice’s suspension, describing them as “flimsy” and “pedestrian”.

He accused the Council of State of failing the nation by entertaining the three letters that called for her removal.

“For the Chief Justice to be singled out for this unfortunate attack… the Council of State has failed the country. We want you, as an institution, to set aside your individual differences and realise that it is your institution that is under attack. Maybe today it is Torkornoo; tomorrow it might be you,” he warned.

Mr Afenyo-Markin stressed that judicial officers must remain above partisan politics.

“You do not serve at the whims and caprices of a political party or government. If you wished to be a politician, you would have joined a political party,” he said, adding that what is happening to Her Ladyship is “repugnant to good conscience”.

He also accused the government of hypocrisy, noting that although it had previously criticised the expansion of the Supreme Court, it had now appointed seven new judges under questionable circumstances.

“You know the process of appointing judges to the Supreme Court, and that process has not been followed. So this reset is a negative reset,” he remarked, urging judicial staff not to become complacent.

Mr Afenyo-Markin further warned against political vengeance in the future.

“I also want to take this opportunity to draw the nation’s attention to the need to end bitterness. If this vicious cycle of ‘you did it to me; I will do it to you’ continues, there will be no hope for our democracy,” he said.

He cautioned that such partisan actions could later haunt current judicial staff, especially with the possibility of a new government in 2028.

“I am humbly calling on all judicial service staff to think deeply about the future. Do not become too comfortable simply because today some government officials are promising you promotions, and so you choose not to speak out. We will speak up for the sake of posterity,” he concluded.

Black Satellites Draw 1-1 With DR Congo In U-20 AFCON Opener

0

GHANA’S BLACK Satellites opened their TotalEnergies CAF U-20 Africa Cup of Nations campaign with a 1-1 draw against DR Congo on Friday night in Suez.

Samuel Ntanda gave DR Congo an early lead in the 16th minute, heading home a pinpoint cross from Messy Manitu. But Ghana responded quickly through Musibau Aziz, who finished off an Emmanuel Mensah cross just eight minutes later.

The Satellites dominated large portions of the game and created more chances, with Aziz nearly scoring again before halftime. In the second half, both teams turned up the physicality, with Ghana pushing for a winner and DR Congo staying compact and resilient.

Jerry Afriyie, brought on as a second-half substitute, came close with a late header, but the Congolese defence held firm. Despite several promising moves and more possession, Ghana couldn’t break the deadlock.

The result leaves Group C wide open, as all four teams including holders Senegal and the Central African Republic, who also drew 1-1 earlier are tied on one point after matchday one.

FLASHBACK: ‘I dreamt about my daughter’s death before the accident’

Cecilia Williams (L) and late actress, Suzzy Williams (R) Cecilia Williams (L) and late actress, Suzzy Williams (R)

Twenty years after the sudden death of young, promising Ghanaian actress Suzzy Williams, a video has resurfaced online in which the late actress’s mother recounts the events leading up to her daughter’s passing.

The popular actress died in a tragic car accident in September 2005.

In the video making waves on social media as of May 5, 2025, Cecilia Williams, mother of the late actress, recalls a chilling dream she had on September 7, 2005, just a day before the fatal crash.

“I had come from the market on the 7th of September, 2005. I was in the hall and dozed off. I felt a heavy pressure on me, so I lay down on the couch and saw something like an accident. That was around 12:15 PM, so I called my husband and told him there was going to be an accident.

“He said I was being superstitious when I told him that I had seen in a dream that Suzzy had been in an accident. He didn’t believe me,” she narrated.

Cecilia Williams further recounted that shortly after the dream, Suzzy came home with her Liberian boyfriend, Edwin Eastman, in search of her birth certificate.

She explained that despite several attempts to share the contents of her dream, her daughter ignored the warnings.

“Suzzy came home earlier saying she was looking for her birth certificate. I asked her what exactly she was looking for, and she told me again it was her birth certificate.

“I asked her to sit down because I knew she wasn’t actually looking for that. She refused because she was in a hurry. She then asked her sisters to help her search.

“Since she didn’t want to listen, I told her she was actually looking for her death certificate, not her birth certificate. I said this in the presence of the young man she was with. I told her that boy wasn’t going to help her. She left in anger, and that was the last time I saw her,” she added.

Before her untimely death, Suzzy Williams had starred in several popular films, including Bloody Mary, Calamity, The Comforter, and Mother’s Heart.

In a post on her official X page on Monday, May 5, 2025, she stated, “This government will not tiptoe around corruption. We are here to draw a hard line between public trust and private gain.”

Touching on the administration’s commitment just 120 days into office, Mogtari pointed to President Mahama’s move to launch a comprehensive Code of Conduct and Ethics.

“Today, President Mahama takes a bold step forward. He will formally launch the Code of Conduct and Ethics which is a framework that will be binding on all public officeholders, government officials, politically exposed persons and their close associates. Why is this necessary?

We’re committed to fixing AT problems

0

Minister of Communications, Digital Technology, and Innovation, Sam George Minister of Communications, Digital Technology, and Innovation, Sam George

The Minister of Communications, Digital Technology, and Innovation, Samuel Nartey George, has stated that the government is committed to addressing the challenges facing the telecommunications network, AirtelTigo (AT).

According to him, in an effort to rescue the struggling telecommunications company, tough decisions will be made to resolve all outstanding issues and ensure the smooth operation of its services.

Speaking to journalists after a working visit to AT last week, Sam George emphasised the need to protect some 500 jobs, reinforcing the government’s decision to sustain the company’s operations.

The government will explore policy and operational reforms to revitalise the company.

He said; “AT is a troubled company, no questions about it. But AT also has some of the best human capital in the telecom sector, and they have successfully navigated very difficult times.”

“We are committed to fixing the problems. We are committed to ensuring that this is addressed once and for all. We will not gloss over the issues,” he added.”

There are difficult conversations that must take place, and tough decisions that must be made. But we will make them to save the company and protect the jobs of its 500 permanent employees,” the minister stated.

Earlier, on April 9, 2025, Sam George highlighted the financial struggles of the state-owned telecom operator AirtelTigo, revealing that the company is burdened by a $200 million debt and incurs monthly losses of approximately GH¢20 million.

He explained that the Akufo-Addo administration acquired AirtelTigo in 2020 for a symbolic $1 but inherited a $400 million debt.

According to him, the previous government failed to conduct proper due diligence, leaving the company in what he described as a “failing and obsolete” state.

Although the debt has been restructured to $200 million, AirtelTigo continues to experience monthly losses of around GH¢20 million.

Why Arsenal could win 2024/2025 UEFA Champions League after Pope Francis’ death

0

GhanaWeb Feature by Benjamin Sackey

The death of Pope Francis on April 21, 2025, at the age of 80, marks a historic moment that could have surprising implications for the UEFA Champions League.

Historically, English clubs have often gone on to win the competition in years when a pope passes away.  In the past, English teams such as Nottingham Forest, Liverpool, and Manchester City have lifted the coveted trophy following the death of a Catholic Church leader.

If history is any guide, Arsenal may have an increased chance of winning this season’s Champions League, given that Pope Francis passed away due to illness this year.

This GhanaWeb Sports piece explores the historical connection between papal deaths and Champions League victories for English clubs.

The impact of the Pope’s death on the Champions League

On three occasions, English clubs have won the Champions League in the same season that a pope passed away.

Here are the notable examples:

1978/79: Pope John Paul I died on September 28, 1978, and Nottingham Forest went on to win the European Cup. 2004/05: Pope John Paul II died on April 2, 2005, and Liverpool won the Champions League.

2022/23: Pope Benedict XVI died on December 31, 2022, and Manchester City clinched the title.

Now, in 2024/25, following the death of Pope Francis, all eyes are on Arsenal, the only remaining Premier League side in the competition.

They currently trail Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) 1-0 after the first leg of the semifinals at the Emirates Stadium.

Can Arsenal keep the trend alive?

Arsenal face a tough challenge in the second leg as they travel to the Parc des Princes on May 7, 2025. However, with key players like Thomas Partey returning, the Gunners remain hopeful of turning the tie around.

A victory would see them advance to the final and edge closer to claiming their first-ever Champions League title, while also continuing a curious historical trend.

A papal connection to football

While Pope Francis was known for his support of Argentine club San Lorenzo, his predecessors also had strong ties to the sport.

Pope John Paul II, for example, was a football enthusiast who once played as a goalkeeper.

He supported Cracovia, a Polish club, and reportedly admired Liverpool. In 2003, former Liverpool goalkeeper Jerzy Dudek revealed that the Pope would often watch their games and thought of him when the team played.

As Arsenal prepare for a defining moment in their history, fans and football romantics alike will be watching closely, wondering if divine timing and history will once again align. SB/MA

Rwanda’s foreign minister confirmed that his country had entered discussions to receive immigrants deported from the United States, less than a year after a similar plan with Britain had failed.

“It has not yet reached a stage where we can say exactly how things will proceed, but the talks are ongoing,” Olivier Nduhungirehe told state broadcaster Rwanda TV in an interview late on Sunday. “Still in the early stages.”

Last week, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said he was searching for more countries to take in people as the administration of President Donald Trump steps up efforts to deport immigrants who entered the US without documents and other noncitizens.

“We are working with other countries to say, ‘We want to send you some of the most despicable human beings to your countries. Will you do that as a favour to us?’ And the farther away from America, the better, so they can’t come back across the border,” Rubio said during a televised cabinet meeting as he was seated next to Trump.

Rwanda confirmed the talks after US media quoted unnamed officials from both countries as saying they were discussing the scheme. The US is also reportedly considering Libya as another destination.

Reports said the US wants to pay Rwanda to accept migrants with criminal records who have served their sentences in the US and potentially integrate them into society with stipends and job assistance to discourage them from returning to the US.

In March, the Trump administration deported an Iraqi national to Rwanda in a transfer that could serve as a model for the future, according to multiple US outlets quoting officials and citing documents.

The efforts are in line with Trump’s crackdown on immigration, which started immediately after he took office for a second four-year term in January.

His administration has been facing legal battles as it tries to continue sending accused gang members to a maximum-security prison in El Salvador without due process.

Amid the ongoing controversy over the wrongful deportation of a Salvadoran citizen living in Maryland to El Salvador, Trump last month said he would also like to deport “homegrown criminals” to the country, meaning US citizens. He also directed the opening of a detention centre at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, to hold up to 30,000 people whom he called the “worst criminal aliens”.

In an interview that aired on Sunday, Trump said he “didn’t know” whether people in the US are entitled to due process rights guaranteed by the country’s Constitution.

The Rwandan and US governments have yet to officially confirm any of the details of their talks, but if an agreement is reached, it would not be the first time Rwanda would accept migrants expelled from the West.

The country had an agreement with the United Kingdom to take in migrants expelled by the British government, but the plan faced numerous legal challenges and was deemed unlawful by the British Supreme Court in a November 2023 ruling.

The then-newly elected Labour government scrapped the deal in July, with Prime Minister Keir Starmer labelling it a “gimmick”. Rwanda is still seeking 50 million pounds ($66m) in payments from the UK over the cancelled deal.

The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has warned that some people sent to Rwanda could be returned to countries from which they had fled and could face dangers, including death.

Rwanda has denied the allegations and accused the UNHCR of lying.

2025 TGMA red carpet session: No invitation, no appearance

The 26th edition of the Telecel Ghana Music Awards (TGMA) is taking a new turn as organisers implement restrictions on who can appear on the red carpet.

This year, only celebrities and dignitaries who have been officially invited will be allowed onto the red carpet.

According to the organisers, there will be two separate red carpet sessions: one for general media interviews and photoshoots, and the main session where the iconic “Who are you wearing?” interviews will take place. To appear on the main red carpet—which will be televised—an official invitation is required.

This move aims to bring order and professionalism to the red carpet proceedings.

Over the years, many have raised concerns about the quality of red carpet appearances, with some criticising the inclusion of so-called ‘celebrities’ and the lack of proper curation, which often extended the duration unnecessarily.

Others have also expressed dissatisfaction with the quality of outfits showcased, describing many as subpar.

With the new directive, the 2025 TGMA red carpet promises a more polished and organised experience.

The 26th Telecel Ghana Music Awards is scheduled for Saturday, May 10, 2025, at the Grand Arena of the Accra International Conference Centre. Produced by Charterhouse, the event is brought to you by Guinness, British Council, Close-Up, KPMG, and TV3, and powered by Telecel – Connecting Energies.

Govt to reverse names of Public Universities changed under Akufo-Addo

0

The Mahama government is preparing to introduce a new bill in Parliament to rename the C.K. Tedam University of Technology and Applied Sciences (CKT-UTAS) and several other public universities across the country.

The Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, made the announcement during the swearing-in ceremony of the Governing Council of CKT-UTAS in Accra.

CKT-UTAS, established in 2021 to provide students with practical and technical skills for the global job market, has faced various infrastructure challenges affecting its academic development. Additionally, the university’s name has drawn mixed reactions from the public, with some stakeholders opposing it from the beginning.

He added that this move forms part of a broader initiative to review and potentially rename several public universities established or renamed during the tenure of former President Nana Akufo-Addo.

“We have had extensive consultations with the academic community, traditional rulers, alumni associations, students, and civil society. As a result, the name C.K. Tedam University of Technology and Applied Sciences is likely to change—possibly reverting to the original vision.

“There will be a general bill to consider the renaming of several public universities that were renamed or established during former President Akufo-Addo’s administration,” Haruna stated.

Haruna Iddrisu clarified that the government’s proposal to rename several public universities is not intended to undermine the legacy of individuals after whom these institutions were named.

“This is not to say those individuals do not deserve recognition, but the renaming will aim to reflect the foundational ethos and historical identities of the institutions,” he said.

Among the universities likely to be affected by the review are the University of Mines and Technology and the Abdulai Salifu University. The proposed changes form part of a broader initiative to reassess the naming of public universities that were renamed or established during the administration of former President Nana Akufo-Addo.

The government is expected to table a bill in Parliament soon to formalise the renaming process.

The Head Coach of Medeama SC, Ibrahim Tanko, has dismissed reports suggesting that defender Kamaradini Mamudu is set to leave the club at the end of the season.

The 22-year-old has been in impressive form this season, earning a recent call-up to the senior national team for the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Chad and Madagascar.

His performances have sparked speculation about a potential move away from the Ghana Premier League former champions.

However, speaking after Medeama’s 3-1 victory over Nations FC last Saturday, Coach Tanko clarified that he was unaware of any offers for the player.

“I’m not aware of any interest from clubs outside. Mamudu is one of the pillars of this team,” he stated. “That’s why he’s a national team player and he’s doing very well. But I always say it’s not about an individual — it’s about teamwork.”

Tanko highlighted Mamudu’s attacking contributions, noting his goal-scoring record despite being a defender. He explained that the defender’s tactical role often saw him operating like a midfielder when Medeama were in possession, which had contributed to his goal tally.

“I’m not surprised he’s scoring a lot of goals. When we have the ball, he plays almost like a midfielder,” the coach added.

Addressing calls for more Medeama players to be considered for the national team, Tanko noted that it was not his place to make recommendations but acknowledged his relationship with the national team coaches.

“I don’t think I have to recommend him. The national team coaches are watching. They are my friends, and if we’re discussing players, I will certainly speak well of Prosper Boakye,” he said.

Mahama designates Ofosu-Adjare to lead Ghana delegation to Global Entrepreneurship Congress 2025 in US

0

President John Dramani Mahama has officially designated Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare, Minister for Trade, Agribusiness and Industry, to represent him and lead Ghana’s high-level delegation to the Global Entrepreneurship Congress (GEC) 2025, taking place in Indiana, USA from June 2–5, 2025.

The 2025 GEC is hosted by the Global Entrepreneurship Network (GEN) under the auspices of the Indiana Economic Development Corporation, and will bring together thousands of entrepreneurs, policymakers, investors, and innovation leaders from over 200 countries.

The Congress aims to accelerate new ideas, drive economic growth, and expand global prosperity through entrepreneurship.

GEC is the world’s premier cross-sector gathering focused on empowering startups and scaling innovation ecosystems. Past host cities have included Dubai, Istanbul, Johannesburg, Kansas City, Milan, and Rio de Janeiro. Indianapolis becomes the second U.S. city to host since the Congress’s inception in 2009.

The 2025 theme, “The Bold Transforms the World,” emphasizes the transformative power of entrepreneurship.

“I believe President Mahama’s decision to designate Hon. Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare underscores Ghana’s strong commitment to advancing entrepreneurship and private sector-led growth as a cornerstone of its economic transformation agenda,” said Stephen Gyasi-Kwaw, Country Founder of GEN-Ghana.

“The Minister is expected to participate in the GEC Ministerial Summit and engage in strategic bilateral meetings, investment forums, and high-level dialogues focused on advancing innovation and job creation.”

The Ghana delegation will comprise representatives from government, private sector, entrepreneurial support organizations, and the Ghanaian diaspora. They will showcase Ghana’s investment potential, promote innovations in agribusiness, and explore new partnerships to drive inclusive economic growth.

Participation in GEC Indiana aligns with Ghana’s international economic diplomacy agenda to elevate its startup ecosystem, build capacity for MSMEs, and strengthen public-private partnerships globally.

#SaveTheJudiciaryDemo: We will fight with our blood to oppose Mahama – Nartey

0

Former Member of Parliament for Ablekuma Central, Ebenezer Nartey, has said that members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) will do everything possible to prevent the National Democratic Congress (NDC) from removing the Chief Justice, Gertrude Torkornoo.

Speaking with Roselyn Felli on Joy Prime’s Prime Morning, Mr. Nartey vowed to defend the judiciary even at the cost of his life, adding that he and other members of the NPP will fight with their blood legally to oppose any attempts by President John Dramani Mahama’s administration to dismiss the CJ.

“Some of us will fight with our blood, and we will resist any attempt by the current president, lawfully, to have a change of mind and hide behind certain groups of people to go to the Supreme Court for interpretation of his tenure of office,” he said on Monday, May 5, 2025.

The former MP made these declarations amidst the party’s ongoing demonstration dubbed ‘Save the Judiciary’ against the suspension of Justice Torkornoo by the president.

Mr. Nartey emphasised that individuals who made the petition to the president have no basis for their claims.

“The issues raised by those people who petitioned the president are useless and baseless. There is no sense in the issues that they have raised,” he said.

Renowned Media Personalities Honoured On World Press Freedom Day

Some renowned journalists and institutions last Friday were honoured by the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), on the celebration of World Press Freedom Day, for their contributions to the development of media and press freedom over the years.

The awardees who were recognised and received citations at the event include Kabral Blay Amihere, Gifty Afenyi Dadzie, Dr. Charles Wereko Brobbey, Prof. Kwame Karikari, Adwoa Yeboah Afari, Kwesi Pratt Jnr, Elizabeth Ohene and Ben Ephson.

Other individuals including Sam Jonah, Bright Blewu, Kwasi Afriyie-Badu, Cameron Duodu, Crystal Djirackor and Wilnar and Alex Quarmyne were also recognised for their contributions to media development in Ghana.

World Press Freedom Day, first declared by the United Nations General Assembly in 1993, is marked every May 3 to raise awareness of the importance of freedom of the press and remind governments of their duty to respect and uphold the right to freedom of expression.

Individuals and institutions who were also recognised for their support over the years include the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC), US Embassy, Unilever Ghana, Innolink and the Electoral Commission.

The rest are Frederich Ebert Foundation, Amakye Dede, Alex Dadey, Chairman, KGL Group of Companies, Dr. Paul Fynn, Chancellor of the Wisconsin University College, and the Agricultural Development Bank (ADB), while former GJA President Mr. Ransford Tetteh and Mr. Peter Martey Agbeko were also honoured.

Edward Adeti, a journalist with the Fourth Estate who was named PAV Ansah Journalist of the Year for his significant contribution to journalism, was awarded a cash amount of GH¢50,000.

Speaking at the event, Minister of State in charge of Government Communication, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, highlighted the need for journalists to take a solemn reflection on Ghana’s low press freedom rankings, attributing it to sometimes the unwarranted attacks on journalists among others.

“These incidents were deeply regrettable,” he said, “and must serve as a reminder that the protection of journalists is not optional, but rather a sacred constitutional duty.”

While acknowledging the role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and its importance to work in recent times, he said it could also pose a potential risk to work rather than providing support.

He, therefore, called on media professionals not to overlook scrutiny and deal with such challenges with vigilance and integrity.

The minister also assured the public of government’s commitment to conclude investigations and secure justice for investigative journalist Ahmed Suale, who was murdered.

“These acts of impunity will not define our future. We remain unwavering in our commitment to protecting journalists and upholding their constitutional freedoms,” he stressed.

Mr. Kwakye Ofosu further said press freedom must not “swing with political cycles but grounded in law”, while calling on security agencies, media owners, political actors, civil society, and political parties among others to safeguard journalists’ rights.

He also commended the awardees for their dedication and commitment to the media profession, and reaffirmed government’s support for a free and responsible press.

The President of GJA, Albert Kwabena Dwumfour, in his opening address, also reiterated the need for caution in the use of AI given how it could affect the credibility of the media, despite the opportunities associated with its usage.

Mr. Dwumfour also said though the GJA would not countenance attacks on journalists, it shall also not condone irresponsible practices in the media.

He, therefore, asked Ghanaians to support journalists to help build a free, vibrant, resilient and innovative media landscape committed to serving the public in a rapidly evolving AI era.

The GJA President further hinted of plans by the Association to rename the Best Radio News Reporter award category after Dr. Charles Wereko- Brobby, popularly known as ‘Tarzan’, for his immense contribution to radio broadcast in Ghana.

The ceremony, which also brought together retired and practicing journalists from various media organisations across the country, was held under the theme: “Reporting in Brave New World – The Impact of Artificial Intelligence on Press Freedom and the Media”.

Agnes Owusu needs help to undergo brain tumour surgery

0

Twenty-one year old Miss Agnes Owusu, a budding young journalist on internship with The Ghanaian Times, is in dire need of financial support in excess of GH¢160, 000.00 or $12,000.00 to enable her to undergo brain tumour surgery.
Consequently, she has appealed to the general public to come to her aid either in cash or in kind to enable her to undergo a successful surgery, and contributions could be made to the Times Needy Fund, UBA Kaneshie North Industrial Area Account number 00103068701511.
She has been diagnosed with a brain tumour located between her brainstem and the posterior part of her brain.
Her medical report signed by Consultant Neurosurgeon of the Greater Accra Regional Hospital (Ridge), Dr Emmanuel Yao Voado, and copied to The Ghanaian Times, explained that her condition had further been “complicated by hydrocephalus” a diagnosis which has affected her general well-being.
The report said prior to her diagnosis, she was experiencing a series of alarming symptoms, including severe headaches, vomiting, and swelling in her cheek.
Her doctors have warned that without urgent surgery to be conducted at the Greater Accra Regional Hospital, these symptoms could return and worsen, possibly leading to seizures, balance issues, paralysis, or even loss of consciousness.
According to Dr Voada, the surgery would require the removal of the tumor which was critical and time-sensitive, however, it would come at a cost.
The surgery is estimated to cost in excess of GH¢160,000 (approximately USD $12,000), unfortunately, the amount was far beyond the means of Agnes and her family.
The Ghanaian Times through this publication is thus soliciting for support towards her surgery to enable her return to duty safely.
Already she had undergone the ventriculoperitoneal shunt placement, which was successfully performed on March 27, 2025.
The shunt placement which cost about GH¢31, 000.00 was funded by her colleagues in the newsroom with some benevolent friends.
Following the surgery, her headaches, vomiting, and neck heaviness resolved and was successfully discharged on April 3, 2025.
However, her doctors have warned that the symptoms of tiredness and short-sightedness had persisted and was anticipated that, as the brain tumour continued to grow, her previous symptoms were likely to return and worsen, potentially accompanied by additional complications such as seizures, balance difficulties, paralysis, and loss of consciousness.
Despite the overwhelming challenges, Miss Owusu said she remains determined and hopeful.
She said her dream was not only to recover but to return to journalism, continue her work, and be a voice for others in her community.
“The estimated cost of the tumour removal is far beyond my means, I am therefore reaching out to anyone who can offer support be it individuals or organisations.
I understand that it is a lot to ask, but I am not just fighting for my life, I am fighting for the chance to continue pursuing my passion for journalism and making a difference in my community,” Miss Owusu said in a statement appealing for help.
Miss Owusu, who is a level 400 student at the University of Media Arts and Communication (UniMAC) is fighting not just for her life, but for the chance to keep making a difference.
Any contribution, no matter how small, would bring Agnes one step closer to the life-saving treatment she urgently needs.
Beyond contributing financially to her cause, it is the hope of The Ghanaian Times that her story would be shared to help reach others who might be able to help.
Miss Owusu is a passionate young journalist who has dedicated her life to telling stories that matter, however, today she requires the help of others to fight for her own story—a fight for survival, health, and hope.

Beyoncé was torn between choosing Jay-Z and another ‘industry guy’

In her recently released Matriarch memoir, Tina Knowles recalled a time when her daughter Beyoncé was torn between choosing Jay-Z, who was pursuing her at the time, and another industry guy she was simultaneously talking to.

Knowles in her memoir said that her daughter and now-husband Jay-Z were initially friends when they established contact in the early 2000s, US Weekly reported.

“Beyoncé had developed a friendship with him, solely over the phone,” Knowles wrote. “They provided good counsel to each other as they discussed the industry, each sharing a singular confidence in their artistic vision.”

Knowles said she invited Jay-Z to come around for dinner when he arrived for a concert in their native Houston. “As Beyoncé and Jay then kept up with each other in calls, the friendship deepened,” Knowles revealed. “She would tell me, ‘He’s just so nice.’”

But Knowles recalled that “another guy in the industry” was also trying to establish a romantic relationship with her daughter at the time, adding when Jay-Z and that individual were coming to Los Angeles to visit Beyoncé while she was on set for 2002’s Austin Powers in Goldmember movie, she asked for advice on her next line of action.

“‘Well, who do you like the most?’” Knowles wrote about the question she asked Beyoncé. “‘Who do you enjoy talking to more?’ I watched her think. It was Jay. Isn’t it humbling how love can begin with such a simple feeling? You like talking to someone over the phone. You’re 21 years old and you can’t know someday you will take that love to the stars, but it begins with such a small instinct.”

As the story goes, Beyoncé went in for Jay-Z, with Knowles writing that she eventually met the trailblazing rapper’s mother Gloria Carter and his other family members when their relationship “got more serious.”

“That was the start of the Carter and Knowles families joining as one family, and we are all very close to this day,” she wrote, per US Weekly. “Our gatherings would become parties, rich with laughter and storytelling, drinking and dancing. In the Bible it says to eat, drink, and be merry, and that’s what our evenings are like with the Carters.”

Beyoncé and Jay-Z got married in a private ceremony at their home in 2008. “They had the wedding at their house on April 4 because it was the only place that we knew it wouldn’t get out,” Knowles wrote.

“We had a lady make white curtains to cover the walls and windows, right up to the 25-foot ceilings. … The details are my daughter and son-in-law’s, but what I will say is that I joined Jay’s grandmother and mother in cooking all the food. We did soul food, of course, the best food for a night of dancing and family love.”

And though Knowles did not provide deep insight into her daughter’s relationship with Jay-Z, she said she regards him and Tim Weatherspoon (Kelly Rowland’s husband) as her sons, per US Weekly.

“They are true blessings, and I could not ask for better providers and protectors of my daughters and their children, and I am always touched that their sense of protection extends to me,” she wrote.

“Jay is an example for his children, starting with very humble beginnings and overcoming every obstacle in the world to be the successful businessman he is. Tim is humble and quiet but incredibly perceptive, managing Kelly’s career for years before becoming an executive at Nickelodeon. Even with all the things they are involved in, their best performance is as fathers.”

The Minority Leader and Member of Parliament for Effutu, Alexander Kwamina Afenyo-Markin, has been captured on video in a visibly agitated state, directing his anger toward one of the police security personnel during the ongoing #SaveTheJudiciaryDemo.

In the video sighted by GhanaWeb, which is fast going viral, the reason for the MP’s rage remains unclear, and it is unknown what specifically provoked him.

However, the footage shows the lawmaker angrily addressing the officers while standing behind the barricades.

He is then seen knocking the head of the police officer in the video, escalating the confrontation.

In an attempt to de-escalate the situation, Richard Ahigbah, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Director of Communications, is also seen trying to calm the MP down and prevent the incident from worsening.

The officer, on the other hand, was captured in the video remaining non-reactive, with his colleague officers seen attempting to calm him down following the incident.

The demonstration, organised by political parties and led by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) under the banner #SaveTheJudiciaryDemo, aims to mount a strong defense of the nation’s constitution and uphold the independence of the judiciary and to protest against the suspension of the Chief Justice, Gertrude Araba Sackey Torkornoo.
