70 years after Bandung: Rekindling a Global South vision for justice and partnership

0

By CGTN

Accra, April 15, GNA- Seventy years ago, in April 1955, representatives from 29 Asian and African countries gathered in Bantung, Indonesia.

Many were newly independent; others were still under colonial rule, but united by a common vision: a world free from imperial domination, Cold War binaries, and economic exploitation.

The Bandung Conference laid the foundation for what we now call the Global South. It was more than a meeting; it was a declaration of sovereignty, solidarity, and self-determination.

Today, as the world faces new forms of geopolitical tension, economic inequality, and shifting alliances, Bandung’s legacy remains strikingly relevant.

As Professor Wang Jinjie of Peking University noted, the conference created a rare platform for countries to assert their vision of a just world order free from Cold War binaries and colonial dependencies.

China, still emerging at the time, found its voice through the Five Principles of Peaceful Coexistence, namely mutual respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity, mutual non-aggression, non-interference in each other’s internal affairs, equality and mutual benefit, and peaceful coexistence.

These values offered an ethical alternative to power-based diplomacy and have since anchored China’s approach to global partnerships, especially in Africa.

For Africa, the conference gave postcolonial struggles a powerful moral and political boost. As Paul Frimpong from the Africa-China Center for Policy and Advisory reminded us, Ghana’s independence in 1957, just two years after Bandung, became a model for other African nations. Ghana not only gained political freedom but also became a hub for pan-African solidarity and a base for liberation movements across the continent.

The spirit of Bandung, once rooted in political liberation, now finds expression in economic cooperation.

Today, Africa and Asia engage through platforms like the Forum on China–Africa Cooperation (FOCAC), the Belt and Road Initiative, and growing south–south exchanges in infrastructure, digital economy, and education.

This shift from resistance to constructive engagement shows the evolution of Bandung’s legacy from protest to partnership.

Still, today’s world presents new challenges: unilateralism, economic protectionism, and persistent global inequality. As Wang Jinjie and Paul Frimpong both emphasized, the Global South must find new ways to assert strategic autonomy — not necessarily through non-alignment, but through flexible and principled cooperation.

There is also a need to modernize Bandung’s ideals: to build inclusive digital economies, green infrastructure, and people-to-people connectivity across regions. As Wang said, the Five Principles remain “an ethical baseline” — a compass to guide the building of a more equitable international system.

Bandung’s legacy isn’t static — it is a living call to action. The message is clear: the Global South must lead its own future, grounded in dignity, mutual respect, and shared prosperity.

70 years after the Bantung Conference, the message still echoes: we are strongest when we speak and act together.

The opinion is based on an interview from CGTN’s podcast China Africa Talk with Paul Frimpong, Executive Director Africa-China Center for Policy and Advisory and Wang Jinjie, Research Assistant Professor at Peking University.

A monument above features a globe sculpture in Bandung, Indonesia, where the 1955 Bandung Conference was held.

The inscription quotes Indonesia’s first president, Sukarno: “Let a new Asia and new Africa be born,” symbolizing solidarity and cooperation among newly independent nations.

Govt takes over Gold Fields Damang Mines

0

The government has assumed operational control of the Damang Mine, a concession held by Abosso Goldfields Limited, a subsidiary of Gold Fields Limited.

The move follows the rejection of the application by Gold Fields Limited to have its 30-year mining lease at the facility extended for another 30 years.

Abosso Gold Fields Limited’s 30-year lease is set to expire tomorrow, April 18, 2025.

The government’s action, according to a statement by the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources, represented a crucial step in Ghana’s economic reset, ensuring that gold reserves directly benefited citizens and contributed to long-term prosperity, easing uncertainty over the future of over 1,300 workers of the company.

The statement available to the Daily Graphic indicated that the government’s decision was based on solid, empirically supported grounds.

“This decision aligns with the government’s policy shift away from the neo-colonial practice of automatic licence renewals for mining in Ghana, focusing instead on a comprehensive reassessment of mining licences to maximise national benefit,” the statement said.

The statement gave an assurance that in spite of the government’s control of the concession, it remained committed to maintaining uninterrupted operations, protecting jobs, and honouring existing valid service contracts while ensuring compliance with legal and fiscal obligations to secure Ghana’s rightful benefits from this vital resource.

Continuity

The government, the statement said, had outlined plans to ensure that all essential services — from security to health care and fuel supply to camp management — continued without disruption.

It also stated that valid contracts would be honoured, wages paid, and operations sustained as efforts were made to regularise arrangements under state stewardship.

The statement further clarified that priority would be given to local workforce retention and community-based enterprises in line with Ghana’s Local Content Policy.

This transition, it said, would focus on local hiring and procurement, ensuring that opportunities in transport, labour and auxiliary services primarily benefited businesses within the Damang catchment area.

A dedicated transition team would also engage directly with all workers, contractors, and community leaders in the coming days to address concerns, provide updates and collaborate on the way forward, it emphasised.

“The Government of Ghana is committed to enforcing strict protocols to ensure safety, orderly operations, and protection of all assets. Unauthorised access or disruptions will not be tolerated.

Together, we will uphold the integrity of this transition,” the statement added.

Reasons

The statement cited several reasons for not renewing the licence, indicating that Abosso Goldfields Limited failed to declare verifiable mineral reserves in its renewal application.

According to Regulation 189 of the Minerals and Mining Act (Licensing) Regulation, 2012 (L.I. 2176), an application to extend a mining lease must include a comprehensive technical report and a programme of mining operations.

Any such report, the statement said, should detail verifiable mineral reserves, including the quantity of gold discovered and projected extraction to justify the lease extension.

“Without declared reserves, the Minerals Commission cannot recommend the extension of the lease.

It is important to note that the company’s 2024 Annual Reports, published in March 2025 — shortly after the Notice of Rejection was served — have validated the government’s position regarding the absence of reserves necessary to support the lease extension,” the statement said.

Additionally, it said the application submitted by Gold Fields Limited lacked a detailed technical programme outlining past activities over the past 30 years or future plans for the mine.

The statement emphasised that “without this critical information, the government cannot adequately assess the mine’s historical performance or future direction — a fundamental requirement for responsible and informed decision-making”.

Furthermore, the statement pointed out that Gold Fields Limited had not allocated any budget for exploration at the Damang Mine over the past two years, insisting that this lack of investment raised serious concerns about the company’s commitment to sustainable mining practices and the long-term viability of the mine.

Background

Gold Fields Limited is the seventh biggest producer of gold in the world, and has two operational mines in Ghana, namely the Tarkwa Mine, which is operated by Gold Fields Ghana, and the Damang Mine, which is run by Abosso Goldfields Limited.

In 2011, Gold Fields bought out IAMGold’s remaining interest in Damang, and the company now owns a 90 per cent stake, with the Government of Ghana holding the remaining 10 per cent.

According to the 2024 annual report of Gold Fields, no mineral reserves were declared at Damang, which meant there were no defined gold reserves to be mined there.

Actual mining at the mine is said to have stopped in 2023 as the company resorted to processing stockpiles.

In fact, it is stated in the Mineral Resources and Reserves Supplement to the Integrated Annual Report of 2023 that no exploration was proposed for the Damang Mine in 2024.

No reserves

The lack of reserves and the lack of funds for exploration spending for the Damang Mine appeared to suggest that the company was not interested in expanding mine life for the mine at Damang.

Additionally, the company, this year, intended to continue the processing of stockpiles in line with the life of the mine for at least one year.

The mine has since been considered as one that has not met the requirements and justification for an extension of lease.

Bawku group tasks government on peaceful resolution of crisis

0

Spokesperson for the Mamprugu Youth Association, Dr Issah Imoro Spokesperson for the Mamprugu Youth Association, Dr Issah Imoro

The Mamprugu Youth Association has advised the government to apply every diplomatic and peaceful approach to the issue between the Mamprusis and Kusasis in the Bawku conflict.

The Mamprugu group urged the government to abandon the use of brutal force in addressing the conflict involving the Indigenous People.

The group alleged that countless innocent lives, including those of police officers and youths, have been lost in the area.

However, the group vowed that no amount of intimidation or killings by security agents can subdue the passion and courage of Mamprugu youths in their quest for peaceful restoration.

The group called on all Kusasi groups to maintain a peaceful approach in bringing lasting peace.

The group also described the conduct of the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohuno, in Bawku as a grave error in judgment, which, in their view, exposes the advice he might have received prior to his visit to Bawku.

Speaking at a press conference yesterday in Accra, the spokesperson for the Mamprugu Youth Association, Dr. Issah Imoro, stated that the conflict between the two ethnic groups should be settled without political or external interference.

He cautioned that any attempt to arrest Naa Sheriga Alhaji Seidu Abagre would be resisted, as it would amount to injustice, contempt of court, a violation of binding court rulings, and a breach of his fundamental human rights.

Imoro mentioned that while the Mamprugu youth recognize the inherent right of every community to pursue its economic activities in safety, the creation of a parallel market by the Kusasi people has not been helpful. Elements within the Kusasi youth have engaged in acts of intimidation and coercion, with the intent to deny others access to the Kusasi market, wrongly tagging them as Mamprusis and their allies.

“Disturbingly, this aggression has extended beyond ethnic profiling to levels that can best be described as domestic terrorism. These same Kusasi youth have forcibly prevented their own Kusasi kin, members of other ethnic groups, and international traders, particularly from Burkina Faso, Niger, and Togo, from accessing the established Bawku central market, which provides revenue to the state.”

The Mamprugu Youth Association believes a lasting solution can be achieved through collaboration and further stated, “We call on the media and all stakeholders to desist from lumping all Bawku youth into these acts of terrorism committed by the Kusasi youth. The facts show that it is the Kusasi youth who are engaged in these acts of violence against the state, and they have actually publicly accepted this fact.”

He Kotoko were winning, he was the best coach – Michael Akuffo defends Prosper Ogum amid fan criticism

0

Former Asante Kotoko midfielder Michael Akuffo has come to the defence of head coach Prosper Narteh Ogum, urging fans to remain calm and support the team during what he described as a normal phase in football.

The Porcupine Warriors have faced a dip in form in recent weeks, prompting calls from some sections of the fans for the coach’s dismissal.

However, Akuffo believes that sacking Prosper Ogum is not the solution.

“If you are a coach, you would understand that what’s happening right now is normal,” Akuffo said in an interview with Ghana Sports Page.

“This is the time I will urge the supporters to back the coach so that it will not eat deep into the team, and dampen the players’ spirit.”

Akuffo reminded fans of the success Ogum has brought to the club and cautioned against reactionary decisions based on a few poor results.

“I don’t subscribe to sacking the coach. When Kotoko was winning, Ogum was the best. Now that we’ve lost one or two games, the goalpost has been shifted—everyone is saying the coach is not good and has to be sacked.”

Kotoko are still in contention for silverware this season, and Akuffo believes unity and support will be crucial in the team’s quest for trophies.

“For me, I think we need to support the coach and the players. We are still in the season, and we have two cups that we can win. I will always back the coach,” he emphasised.

Kotoko, who are on 47 points, have dropped to third after a 3-0 defeat to Accra Lions, trailing Bibiani Gold Stars by three points.

The Porcupines are on a three-game winless run, winning one, drawing three and losing one of their last five games.

PSG players celebrate after knocking out Aston Villa to advance to the semi final of UCL

FC Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) have advanced to the Champions League semi-finals despite suffering defeats in their second-leg quarter-final matches. The unexpected results showcased the resilience of both teams, proving that their first-leg performances were enough to carry them through.

Barcelona entered their clash against Borussia Dortmund with a commanding 4-0 lead from the first leg. However, Dortmund mounted a fierce comeback, securing a 3-1 victory.

Serhou Guirassy was the standout performer, netting a hat-trick that nearly turned the tie around. His first goal came from a penalty in the 11th minute, followed by a powerful header early in the second half.

Despite Dortmund’s resurgence, Barcelona managed to hold on, aided by an own goal from Ramy Bensebaini that ultimately sealed their progression with a 5-3 aggregate score. Reflecting on the match, Guirassy stated, “I’m proud of our performance. We showed what we can do. It’s sad that our journey is over.” Meanwhile, Barcelona coach Hansi Flick admitted, “We didn’t play at our best today, but Dortmund did really well. What the team has achieved in recent weeks is phenomenal.”

PSG faced Aston Villa in England, carrying a 3-1 advantage from the first leg. The French side initially extended their lead with goals from Achraf Hakimi and Nuno Mendes, seemingly securing their semi-final spot.

However, Villa responded with a stunning comeback, scoring three goals through Youri Tielemans, John McGinn, and Ezri Konsa to win 3-2 on the night.

Despite the loss, PSG progressed with a 5-4 aggregate score, thanks to their first-leg dominance. Goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma played a crucial role in preventing Villa from scoring a decisive fourth goal.

With their semi-final spots secured, Barcelona will face either Inter Milan or Bayern Munich, while PSG awaits the winner of Arsenal vs. Real Madrid.

Ghana U21 Hockey Team Withdraws from Junior Africa Cup

0

Ghana’s U21 national hockey team will not participate in the upcoming Junior Africa Cup in Windhoek, Namibia, after the Ghana Hockey Federation failed to secure funding for the trip.

Vice President of the Federation, Elizabeth King, confirmed the withdrawal, expressing disappointment over the impact on the young athletes. “The players are disheartened. This was their first chance at international competition,” she said.

Despite submitting a $150,000 budget to the National Sports Authority and the Ministry of Sports to cover travel and accommodation, no support was received.

Some players even began training at their own expense, hoping for eventual assistance.

The Ministry officially communicated its inability to support the team on April 4, forcing the federation to withdraw. Ms. King described the decision as a major blow, not only emotionally but developmentally. “It’s through international exposure that we build our national teams,” she added.

Ghana’s absence also means the teams will miss out on a potential place at the Junior World Cup.

Newmont exits Akyem mine in US$850 million global divestment deal

0

The Akyem gold mine in Ghana’s Eastern Region has changed hands following the completion of its sale by Newmont Corporation, the world’s leading gold producer.

The development marks the beginning of a new chapter for the mine, which has been a major contributor to local employment and Ghana’s gold output over the years.

The sale, announced on Wednesday, April 16, 2025, is part of Newmont’s global asset reorganisation strategy.

The Akyem gold mine was sold alongside the Porcupine mine in Canada, with both transactions expected to generate a combined after-tax cash value of approximately $850 million, subject to final adjustments.

Newmont had identified Akyem as one of six non-core assets earmarked for divestiture under a strategic restructuring program unveiled in February 2024.

The Akyem operation, known for its substantial gold reserves and impact on surrounding communities, now transitions to new ownership, though the acquiring entity has yet to be publicly disclosed.

Newmont’s President and Chief Executive Officer, Tom Palmer, described the sale as a significant milestone for the company.

“We have now divested all six of our non-core operations from the program announced in early 2024. This is a significant milestone for Newmont,” Palmer stated.

The broader divestment initiative is expected to generate up to $4.3 billion in gross proceeds, $3.8 billion from the sale of non-core assets and $527 million from the disposal of other investments.

According to Newmont, the funds will be used to strengthen the company’s balance sheet and support share repurchase program aimed at enhancing shareholder value.

Compare Messi to Maradona, Abedi Pele, not Cristiano Ronaldo – Asamoah Gyan

0

Asamoah Gyan prefers Messi over Ronaldo as the best footballer Asamoah Gyan prefers Messi over Ronaldo as the best footballer

Legendary Ghanaian player Asamoah Gyan believes Argentine football great Lionel Messi is a better player than his Portuguese rival Cristiano Ronaldo.

He explained that Messi’s exceptional talent allows him to play for extended periods without suffering injuries or a dip in form, whereas Ronaldo relies heavily on his physical fitness, achieved through relentless training.

The Black Stars’ all-time top scorer and former captain asserted that Messi’s remarkable achievements in football history warrant comparisons with legendary players like Diego Maradona and Abedi Pele, rather than Ronaldo.

In an interview with TV3 on April 17, 2025, Gyan stated that although he respects Ronaldo’s talent, he would choose Messi as the best between the two.

“They don’t play in the same position. You can compare Messi to Maradona, Abedi Pele, and those players, but not Cristiano Ronaldo. Messi is the gifted one; he can play for two months without issues.

“Ronaldo, on the other hand, depends on fitness to play, and that’s where I respect him. He got to where he is through hard work and dedication. Ronaldo is a complete player, but I still prefer Messi,” he said.

The debate about the best player between Ronaldo and Messi has been ongoing, with football pundits and legends offering differing opinions.

Why Ghana must deepen its strategic ties with China

0

As the global economic landscape continues to evolve, Ghana must make bold and strategic decisions about where it places its international priorities. While the United States has historically had strong ties with Africa, its approach, particularly under the Trump administration, focused less on development and more on strategic containment of China.

Ghana must look beyond the rhetoric and pursue partnerships that deliver measurable growth. And in this, China stands out.

Donor dependency over the years has created bottlenecks in our development efforts, hindering our chances at long-term self-sufficiency. In contrast, China has shown consistency in offering infrastructure and industrial partnerships that are less encumbered by bureaucracy and political conditions.

China’s Global Industrial Edge

China is now the world’s largest manufacturer, contributing over 28% of global industrial output. It is the leading electric vehicle producer, accounting for 60% of global EV sales in 2023, and it controls over 70% of the global solar panel supply chain. In telecommunications, Huawei alone had contracts to build 5G in over 60 countries by 2022.

The Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) has signed cooperation agreements with 149 countries, including nearly every country in Africa.

According to the China-Africa Research Initiative at Johns Hopkins University, China committed $155 billion in loans to African countries between 2000 and 2020, compared to less than $60 billion from the U.S. in the same period.

Ten Reasons Ghana Should Take China More Seriously

Infrastructure Execution: With Chinese funding and expertise, Ghana can fast-track much-needed roads, rail, and energy projects.

Chinese firms such as Sinohydro have already contributed to the construction of major roads under Ghana’s $2 billion Sinohydro deal, including the Tamale Interchange. On September 26, 2022, another road project constructed by a Chinese company was commissioned in Cape Coast, the capital of Ghana’s Central Region.

The project, which was part of the agreement between the Ghanaian government and Sinohydro Corporation Limited, has a length of 22 km. China has also funded portions of the Eastern Corridor Road. More partnerships of this kind could help close our infrastructure deficit.

Technology Access: Chinese innovations in AI, telecom, and fintech can help Ghana leapfrog into a modern economy. Huawei, for instance, operates in Ghana and has provided critical telecommunications infrastructure for mobile networks, while also investing in ICT training programs for Ghanaian students and professionals.

Healthcare Support: China’s pharmaceutical industry offers affordable, scalable solutions to Ghana’s health sector challenges. Ghana can emulate parts of Nigeria’s strategic healthcare collaboration with Chinese suppliers, especially in areas like traditional medicine integration, mobile clinics, and bulk medical procurement.

Skills Development: Education partnerships and training programs with China can close Ghana’s STEM and vocational gaps. Already, several Ghanaian students benefit from Chinese government scholarships. Expanding bilateral vocational training centers, like those proposed under the “Luban Workshop” initiative, could equip thousands of Ghanaian youth with relevant technical skills.

Manufacturing Potential: With Chinese industrial backing, Ghana can shift from raw material exports to value-added processing and industrial output. Potential sectors include:

Cocoa processing

Gold refining

Textiles and garments

Ceramics and glass manufacturing

Automotive assembly

Agricultural Innovation: Mechanized farming and agro-tech from China can revolutionize Ghana’s food systems. Pilots in irrigation, drone-assisted farming, and greenhouse technology could help boost productivity, reduce post-harvest losses, and improve food security.

Renewable Energy Growth: Joint solar and hydroelectric projects with China could stabilize Ghana’s erratic power supply while promoting a cleaner energy transition. The Bui Dam, built with Chinese support, is a prime example of successful collaboration.

Attracting FDI: Ghana can position itself as the go-to West African base for Chinese investors. Chinese companies like Sunda Group, StarTimes, and Sinotruk already operate in Ghana, contributing significantly to job creation, tax revenue, and technology transfer.

Cultural and Tourism Exchange: With a growing middle class in China, Ghana has an opportunity to promote cultural diplomacy and heritage tourism. The “Year of Return” campaign demonstrated Ghana’s global tourism potential. Now is the time to strategically target Chinese tourists and investors.

Strategic Diplomacy: A robust China policy gives Ghana geopolitical leverage in international forums. Balancing China alongside traditional Western allies gives Ghana more room to negotiate for its interests, whether in trade, health, education, or security.

The Trump Doctrine: America First, Africa Later

Under President Trump, U.S. foreign policy toward Africa saw notable shifts. The administration cut funding to agencies such as the WHO and the UN, which have traditionally supported Africa’s development agenda. While the Prosper Africa initiative was launched to increase trade, its slow implementation and limited scope left much to be desired.

USAID, a major development agency, began withdrawing or reducing its operations in several African nations. The U.S. International Development Finance Corporation (DFC) did pledge investments, but actual disbursements on the continent pale in comparison to China’s direct state-backed financing. In essence, the U.S. turned inward, leaving a gap China was quick to fill.

A Call to Action

To make this vision actionable, the Government of Ghana should:

Establish a Ghana-China Strategic Development Council to coordinate major bilateral projects.

Prioritize new MoUs in technology, health, and education.

Develop Special Economic Zones (SEZs) supported by Chinese capital and technical expertise.

Launch joint training centers and vocational institutes tailored to the industrial and ICT sectors.

Promote Ghanaian exports to China through targeted diplomatic and trade missions.

Conclusion: Choosing Partnerships That Deliver

Ghana’s development cannot hinge on sentimentality, Cold War residues, or historical allegiances. It must be grounded in pragmatism and national interest.

China has demonstrated a readiness to invest, build, and collaborate. From roads to robotics, from cocoa to clean energy, Ghana has much to gain from a more deliberate and focused engagement with China.

Our country is not in a position to wait for benevolence. We must seize opportunities that accelerate our transformation.

As global alliances shift and new powers emerge, Ghana must adopt a development-first diplomacy. This means aligning with partners, like China, that offer tangible, scalable, and strategic support.

It is time to act boldly, not just watch. Our future deserves nothing less.

Why I lost EC appointment under Akufo-Addo – Amoako Baah [Listen]

0

Political Scientist Dr. Richard Amoako Baah has recounted how he lost an opportunity to be appointed as the Chairman of the Electoral Commission (EC) during former President Nana Akufo-Addo’s tenure.

In an interview on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, the former New Patriotic Party (NPP) member revealed that he contested the party’s Chairmanship position not because he needed the role but to get closer to Akufo-Addo and guide him on key decisions.

He explained, “I contested as the National Chairman just to get close to the President because I didn’t even need the position for anything, but only 18 people in the party saw the truth.”

However, after his defeat, Akufo-Addo’s cousin, Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko, informed him that he had missed a significant opportunity to become the EC Chair.

Gabby Otchere-Darko
Gabby Otchere-Darko

Dr. Baah recalled, “One time I spoke to Gabby and he asked me why I contested for the National Chairmanship because they were considering making me the Electoral Commissioner, but my participation in the election thwarted it.”

Dr. Baah expressed disappointment, questioning whether party decisions should be determined by only a select few, asking, “Is that to suggest we only do what a few want in the party?”

On Wednesday, April 16, 2025, Dr. Baah announced that he had resigned from the NPP, citing frustration with the party’s leadership and its failure to connect with ordinary supporters.

He also hinted at the formation of a new political party, the New Patriotic Front (NPF), claiming that the initiative already has support from about 36 NPP stalwarts.

Good Deeds Day Ghana Celebrates Youth Talent, Champions Natural Abilities

0

Accra, April 17, GNA -The Ghana Chapter of Good Deeds Day has reaffirmed its commitment to promoting and celebrating natural talents among young people, with a colourful Talent Celebration and Awards ceremony held in Accra.

The event, which brought together over 200 children from various schools and youth-focused organisations, showcased creative excellence in music, dance and drama, pencil arts, local language reading, and the transformation of waste into valuable art.

Country Director of Good Deeds Day Ghana, Mrs. Lily Bright Tetteh, in her keynote address, stressed the organization’s core vision of “good doing” and the need to rediscover and nurture natural abilities in children and the youth.

“Good Deeds Day goes beyond promoting acts of kindness. We believe that talent is also a good deed – one that, when nurtured, can build communities, a country, and even influence the moral and structural fibre of our society,” she stated.

She decried the growing culture of stifling youthful expression, noting that the overemphasis on formal

education at the expense of natural abilities is leading to missed opportunities.

“We are wrongly psyched to think education is the end of all knowledge. But what about the boy who can craft drums out of cans or the girl with a melodious voice who is constantly told she’s making noise?” she asked.

Mrs. Tetteh explained that this year’s event was designed to rewrite the narrative, starting in the Greater Accra Region with plans to rotate the celebration across all regions of Ghana, including the Eastern, Western, and eventually the Northern regions.

“In the North, children use empty tins to create drums and xylophones that produce melodious music. These talents must be celebrated and nurtured,” she said, adding that the goal is to partner role models in various disciplines to adopt and mentor these young talents for future growth.

The event also introduced a new category that celebrated outstanding reading abilities in Ghanaian languages – an area Mrs. Tetteh noted is declining in schools across the country.

“Many children are struggling to read in our local dialects. We’re changing that by making language reading part of the talent awards,” she said.

One of the highlights of the event was the inclusive nature of

the awards – each participating school or organization went home with at least one trophy and a medal, making the experience rewarding for all.

Commendation was given to EAAK Football Club from Teshie for their participation, as well as to all partner schools and youth organisations whose presence enriched the event.

Mrs. Tetteh also paid glowing tribute to the CEO of Good Deeds Day Israel, Mr. Kaynan Robino, and his team, for their unwavering support and vision which had enabled the initiative to thrive in over 100 countries.

Looking ahead, the Ghana chapter plans to expand the talent celebration into a national movement, building a strategic platform to connect gifted children with mentors and opportunities.

“We want every child with a gift to feel seen and valued. Whether you win or just add colour to the event, you are part of our joy, and that alone is a good deed,” she concluded.

Stop exploiting the crisis – Former NPP MP to politicians

0

Benjamin Kofi Ayeh, former Member of Parliament for Upper Denkyira West Benjamin Kofi Ayeh, former Member of Parliament for Upper Denkyira West

A former Member of Parliament for Upper Denkyira West, Benjamin Kofi Ayeh, has cautioned politicians against exploiting the long-standing dispute at Bawku for political gain.

Speaking to the ongoing crisis in an exclusive interview with GhanaWeb, on April 16, 2025, he expressed worry over the dispute that has lingered for decades.

He advised politicians to stay out of the long-standing conflict and desist from utterances that appear to fuel the already volatile situation.

“Let’s be mindful of our utterances and please let’s not take advantage of the situation to knocks heads together. What do you gain if you win power, but end up with followers who are maimed? What will be the point if you win power and later find out your supporters have perished?” he lamented.

Recounting the implications of the ongoing ethno-political conflict, he indicated that the disturbances do not only pose security threats to the region, but has badly impacted crucial sectors like the economy, education and health.

He particularly cited reports of health professionals fleeing the conflict zone as a major concern.

“I heard that doctors and health professionals are fleeing Bawku because of the security situation. I believe school children are unable to attend school because of the risks that abound,” he said.

He consequently called on the north eastern town to give peace a chance.

“I am pleading with the people of Bawku to give peace a chance. Many indigenes are unable to go about their normal duties; some have perished or have been maimed. These are your own brothers and sisters. So, lets take a cue from the mediation efforts to work out our differences and resolve this conflict completely,” the former MP for Upper Denkyira West said.

He also reiterated that politicians should limit their involvement in the Bawku conflict and allow mediation efforts, led by the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, other chiefs, the clergy, and community leaders to progress to bring a permanent resolution to the conflict.

Easter Outfit Ideas for Women on Easter Sunday

0

Easter Sunday is a time of joy, family gatherings, and celebration. It’s also the perfect opportunity to dress up in cheerful, seasonally-inspired outfits that reflect the freshness and beauty of spring. Whether you’re heading to church, brunch, or an outdoor event, here are some elegant and stylish Easter outfit ideas for women to consider.

Floral dresses are a timeless Easter staple. Choose a midi or knee-length dress in soft, spring colors like lavender, blush pink, baby blue, or mint green. Opt for light fabrics such as cotton or chiffon to stay comfortable throughout the day. Pair it with nude heels or ballet flats and a lightweight cardigan for a refined look.

For a modern twist, a tailored jumpsuit can be both chic and comfortable. Look for one in pastel shades or subtle prints. A wide-leg jumpsuit with a belted waist can flatter a variety of body types. Add some statement earrings and block heels to elevate the outfit.

Combine a pleated or A-line skirt with a ruffled blouse or lace top for a soft and elegant ensemble. Neutral tones or gentle prints work well for Easter. This look is perfect for transitioning from a church service to a family lunch.

Maxi dresses offer flow and grace, making them a great choice for outdoor Easter events. Pair with a denim jacket or a cropped blazer if the weather is still cool.

When choosing your Easter Sunday outfit, aim for looks that are fresh, modest, and joyful. Add accessories like pearl earrings, sun hats, or a pastel handbag to complete your look. Celebrate the season in style and comfort!

Whoever leads NDC with Mahama’s record will beat any NPP candidate – Quashie

0

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) Council of Elders Chair for South Africa, Benjamin Kofi Quashie, says whoever will lead the NDC with President Mahama’s record will beat any New Patriotic Party’s (NP) candidate in the next election.

This, he believes, is because President Mahama is performing better in resetting the nation.

He also praised the groundbreaking nature of the Vice President of Ghana, Prof. Jane Nana Opoku Agyemang, indicating that it would not be surprising if she leads the NDC after President Mahama’s tenure.

Speaking on Joy News’ UpFront on Wednesday, April 16, Mr. Quashie emphasised that, as the first female Vice Chancellor of the University of Cape Coast and the first female Vice President of Ghana, fortune might smile on her to make her lead the NDC.

Nonetheless, Mr. Quashie indicated it is still early days in the government of President John Mahama.

“He has still not completed forming his government. The party should not engage in such discussions but rather rally behind President Mahama to succeed,” he underscored. However, the SA Council Chair noted that leadership of the NDC post-Mahama should be left for others to discuss, and not amongst NDC members who have a government to run.

The other potential names listed included the current Education Minister, Haruna Iddrisu, the Finance Minister, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, the Foreign Minister, Samuel Okudjeto Ablakwa, and the current NDC Chair, John Asiedu Nketia.

Reacting to how any of these persons would fare against the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Dr. Bawumia, Quashie posited, with reference to the 2024 election outcome, that any of the candidates would beat Dr. Bawumia any day in a general election.

“I have said that anytime, any day, and in any election held between the NPP with Dr. Bawumia as their candidate, the NDC would beat them hands down,” he stressed.

Mr. Quashie highlighted that the NDC is doing very well and their approval rating indicates that Ghanaians believe the country is heading in the right direction.

‘Use Easter To Renew Hope In God’

0

Rev. Ebenezer Olalekan Alabi

Christians have been reminded to renew their hope in God as they observe the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ during Easter.

Founder and leader of Mission of Hope Ministries, Rev. Ebenezer Olalekan Alabi, who made the remarks during the celebration of ‘Hope Day’ in Accra, said the occasion should serve as a  symbol  of hope  for  mankind  to continuously trust in God at all times irrespective of  the challenges in life.

He said the ‘Hope Day’ is celebrated annually to thank God for the transformational impact of  the Ministry’s daily devotional messages on hope via channels including Facebook, WhatsApp, emails and other virtual platforms  since 2004.

He said, “Be the reason why someone is smiling and the joy of many, and show someone mercy just as we are shown mercy by Christ; Jesus showed us the way, resurrected to give us hope, Christ resurrection is our hope for living.”

According to him, many youth who could wait patiently to achieve their goals in life may want to achieve material wealth regardless of the consequences of their actions.

He, therefore, advised the youth to be patient, and trust in God in their quest to achieve their goals, especially their career aspirations in life.

He appealed to Christians who have given up on their dreams due to one form of disappointment from an individual or the clergy to remain focused and put their trust solely in God as the ultimate provider of the needs of mankind.

Touching on leadership, he also advised leaders to clearly redefine their purpose for leading and ensure people become better in life instead of enriching themselves at the expense of others.

“As a leader, you need to give your best to your subjects. There should be a reason why you are leading, because people should become better than you met them. That way, you will always be remembered for the impact made in their lives,” he added.

The celebration, which coincided with the Founder’s birthday, also brought together members of the Hope Mission Ministries, clergy, friends and well-wishers.

Chinese Zijin Mining buys Newmont’s Akyem Gold Mine for $1 billion

Gold output in the Akyem Mine between 2021 and 2024 totalled 40.6 tonnes Gold output in the Akyem Mine between 2021 and 2024 totalled 40.6 tonnes

The acquisition of Newmont Corporation’s Akyem Gold Mine by Chinese firm Zijin Mining Group Co. for $1 billion has been finalized.

According to reports, the deal executed through Zijin’s wholly-owned overseas subsidiary closed on April 16 after all conditions precedent were either met or waived.

The acquisition comes at a time when the Chinese company intends to expand its gold production capacity and reinforce its international growth strategy.

In a statement by Zijin, it said the acquisition was fueled by the Akyem mine’s favourable mineralisation and potential for reserve expansion.

Newmont’s President and Chief Executive Officer, Tom Palmer, said his outfit has fully executed its plan to divest non-core assets, a move aimed at optimising operational efficiency and enhancing shareholder value.

“Today, I am pleased to announce the successful completion of our non-core asset divestiture program with the sale of Akyem and Porcupine, generating total after-tax cash proceeds of approximately $850 million before closing adjustments.

“This is a significant milestone for Newmont, as we have now divested all six of our non-core operations from the program announced in early-2024. With the cash proceeds received this year, we remain committed to continuing to strengthen our balance sheet and return capital to shareholders through ongoing share repurchases,” Tom Palmer was quoted by citinewsroom.com.

Newmont obtained the mining lease for Akyem in 2010 and began commercial production in 2013.

In 2017, the Ghana Investment Promotions Center (GIPC) named Akyem the best company in Ghana for the second consecutive year.

The Akyem mine operates within 10 host communities in the Birim North District of Ghana’s Eastern Region, namely: Adausena, Yaw Tano, Old Abirem, New Abirem, Hweakwae, Tano, Afosu, Mamanso, Ntronang, and Yayaaso.

The mine employs a conventional carbon-in-leach processing method and has an annual capacity of 8.5 million tonnes.

Its gold output between 2021 and 2024 totalled 40.6 tonnes, with 2022 marking the peak year at 13.1 tonnes.

It generated $574 million in operating income and posted a net profit of $128 million in 2023, underscoring its commercial viability and operational efficiency.

Musah Dunkwah explains key figures behind NPP’s defeat in 2024 elections

0

The Executive Director of Global InfoAnalytics, Musah Dunkwah, has shed light on the key political figures held responsible for the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) defeat in the 2024 general elections.

Speaking on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show, Dunkwah outlined the findings of a detailed post-election survey conducted by the research firm.

According to him, the initial approach was to allow respondents to openly state who they believed was responsible for the NPP’s loss and why, before narrowing down the list for a more structured, close-ended survey.

“We wanted to find out what personalities people would assign blame to before heading to the field. From that study, we shortlisted the names most frequently mentioned and used them in our final survey,” he explained.

The data revealed that former President Nana Akufo-Addo topped the list, with 68% of respondents citing his administration’s performance as a decisive factor in the party’s electoral collapse.

Read also: 68% of voters say Akufo-Addo caused NPP defeat – Global Info Analytics

Mr Dunkwah highlighted public frustrations with the President’s dismissive tone, especially his controversial remarks in the Ashanti Region suggesting that voters could support someone else if they disagreed.

“Many were disappointed with his refusal to heed calls from his own party to make changes in government. His disregard for traditional authorities also did not sit well with the electorate.”

The report further identified former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta as the second-most blamed figure, with 40% of respondents attributing the defeat to his role in the government’s economic management.

Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the party’s 2024 presidential candidate and then-Vice President, was cited by 37% of respondents, who felt his campaign failed to inspire enough confidence.

Other key figures named include Dr. Matthew Opoku-Prempeh (33%), various government appointees (32%), and Members of Parliament (25%). Kennedy Agyapong, who contested in the NPP primaries but did not lead the party into the general election, was held responsible by 9% of respondents.

Mr Dukwah also challenged the narrative that voter apathy in the NPP’s strongholds caused the defeat, citing hard numbers that show a different story.

“Mathematically, that analysis is flawed,” he stated. “Our post-election data indicates that nearly 20% of self-identified NPP supporters did not vote for the party in 2024. Of those who initially planned to vote for Bawumia, 17% switched or abstained on election day—with 14% ultimately voting for Mahama.”

Build satellite markets to improve Ghana’s market infrastructure – GUTA

0

Director of Communications at GUTA, Joseph Paddy Director of Communications at GUTA, Joseph Paddy

The Ghana Union of Traders Association (GUTA) is urging the government to prioritise the development of satellite markets across the country as a strategic step toward improving Ghana’s market infrastructure and easing congestion in major trading centers.

This follows a recent comment made by the Kumasi Mayor, Richard Ofori Agyemang Boadi, who threatened to discipline traders who fail to comply with the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly’s (KMA) directive against trading in unauthorised areas.

On Wednesday, April 16, 2025, the Mayor issued a two-week ultimatum to traders operating along pavements within the central business district to vacate the area or face sanctions, including being lashed.

Speaking in an interview with GhanaWeb Business, the Director of Communication at GUTA, Joseph Paddy, said the association strongly objects to the mayor’s statement.

He stated that one of the most effective solutions would be for the government to build satellite markets to reduce pressure on central markets across the country.

“Why won’t the government partner with the public so that, together, we can create better market spaces for our people? We need to build more satellite markets so people don’t have to travel all the way from Kasoa to Accra just to buy or sell. The population outweighs the market spaces, and that’s why we see people trading in unauthorised places,” he said.

He further called for stronger collaboration between the government and key stakeholders, such as trade associations and market leaders, to help resolve the rising issues faced by traders.

‘Did you say Ghana will be fine?’

0

Entertainment pundit, Ola Michael Entertainment pundit, Ola Michael

Entertainment analyst and broadcaster Ola Michael has blamed the latest utility tariff increases on the mismanagement plaguing the country’s power sector.

His comments come amid public fury over the recent 14.75% increase in electricity tariffs and a 4.02% rise in water charges, effective May 3, 2025.

“The heart-breaking truth is we’re buying power at GH¢100 and selling at GH¢40; that’s a GH¢60 loss on every transaction,” he lamented.

He cited some major causes, including the fluctuations in the dollar to cedi rates, illegal connections and debts by citizens, as some of the causes of the constant increases.

“By the time we finish selling the power and convert to dollars to buy more, the dollar to cedi rate has shot up, so we are already at a loss.

“Illegal connections are thriving and people are refusing to pay their light bills,” he said.

Michael particularly slammed the heavy incentives given to government officials, including free electricity, which, according to him, further adds to the losses incurred.

“Monies that should be used as revenue are being taken out as allowances and bonuses by executives. Some government officials and executives are not even paying light bills.

“All this is why the tariffs keep increasing. So when the NPP keep shouting that Mahama has brought back dumsor, tell them to go and check their agreement with the IMF,” he said.

Ola Micheal also pointed out the recent disappearance of critical ECG infrastructure, questioning if there is really hope for the country with the problems.

“Look at the ECG containers that were brought in to boost power supply. They are all missing. And you say Ghana will be fine?” he asked.

He added, “I’ll have no choice but to return to my family home. At least I won’t have to pay all these bills.”

Jerome Otchere details what Kotoko must do to win Ghana Premier League

0

Ace sports journalist, Jerome Otchere Ace sports journalist, Jerome Otchere

Sports journalist Jerome Otchere has advised Asante Kotoko to take their home games seriously and win them if they want to clinch the 2024/2025 Ghana Premier League title.

According to him, the complex nature of the GPL requires teams to win the majority of their home matches to garner maximum points, as away fixtures are challenging.

The former Kotoko Express editor urged the team to be consistent in their performances and avoid complacency until they achieve success.

“Kotoko should be careful not to drop points, especially at home. The nature of our league is such that none of the teams will allow you to win away. So, if you’re playing at home, you have to do everything you can to win your matches. If Kotoko really wants to win the league title, they must take their chances, especially in home games.

“But if you’re not winning at home, away games will be tough. They haven’t lost in a while. If you draw, let’s say three games, it’s almost like losing two matches. So, they should keep their focus on winning at home, especially, and making sure they grab some points away if they can,” he told Benjamin Sackey during an interview with GhanaWeb Sports.

Kotoko lost their game against Accra Lions 3-0 in an away fixture, dropping them from the summit of the league table to third position with 47 points.

Bibiani Gold Stars have leapfrogged the Porcupine Warriors to lead the table with 50 points after 27 games played.

At least 50 killed after boat catches fire, capsizes in DR Congo

A boat has capsized after catching fire in the northwestern DRC leaving at least 50 people dead A boat has capsized after catching fire in the northwestern DRC leaving at least 50 people dead

A boat has capsized after catching fire in the northwestern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), leaving at least 50 people dead and hundreds missing, a local official has said.

The search for the missing was under way on Wednesday with rescue teams supported by the Red Cross and provincial authorities, following the accident on the Congo River late Tuesday night.

The motorised wooden boat with about 400 passengers caught fire near the town of Mbandaka, after having left the port of Matankumu for the Bolomba territory, Competent Loyoko, the river commissioner, told The Associated Press news agency.

The incident began while someone was cooking on board, Loyoko said.

Several passengers, including women and children, died after jumping into the water without being able to swim. About 100 survivors were taken to an improvised shelter at the Mbandaka town hall, many of them with bad burns.

Deadly boat accidents are common in the central African country, Al Jazeera’s Alain Uaykani said, reporting from Goma. He said rescue teams were often inexperienced and unequipped to manage emergencies.

Hundreds have been killed in boat accidents in recent years as more people abandon the few available roads for wooden vessels packed with passengers and their goods.

In December, at least 38 people died after a ferry carrying more than 400 people travelling for Christmas capsized on a river in the northeastern DRC.

A boat capsized in Lake Kivu, in the eastern DRC, in October, killing 78 people.

Fed Chair Powell gives starkest warning yet on potential economic consequences from tariffs

0

President Donald Trump’s significant policy changes, including on tariffs, are unlike anything seen in modern history, putting the Federal Reserve in uncharted waters, Chair Jerome Powell said Wednesday.

“These are very fundamental policy changes,” Powell said at an event hosted by the Economic Club of Chicago. “There isn’t a modern experience of how to think about this.”

Powell said “the level of the tariff increases announced so far is significantly larger than anticipated” and that the lingering uncertainty around tariffs could inflict lasting economic damage. With Trump’s tariffs putting the economy on a path toward weaker growth, higher unemployment and faster inflation — all at the same time — the Fed is also facing a situation it hasn’t dealt with in about half a century.

“We may find ourselves in the challenging scenario in which our dual-mandate goals are in tension,” Powell said.

US stocks tumbled as Powell spoke: The Dow was down 700 points, or 1.7%. The broader S&P 500 fell 2.5%. The tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite slid 3.5%.

The Fed is responsible for promoting full employment and keeping inflation in check, but Trump’s tariffs threaten both of those goals. For now, however, the US economy remains in decent shape, according to the latest data.

Powell said the Fed’s best move for the moment is to stand pat until the data clearly shows how the US economy is responding to Trump’s policies.

But it’s only a matter of time until Trump’s tariffs stoke inflation, push up unemployment and weaken economic growth, according to most economists, especially if the massive “reciprocal” tariffs that went into effect briefly on April 9 are put back in place. Trump delayed that historic hike in import taxes until July.

So far, Trump has imposed 25% tariffs on aluminum and steel; 25% tariffs on goods from Mexico and Canada that aren’t compliant with a free-trade agreement; a massive 145% duty on Chinese imports; a 25% tariff on cars, with separate tariffs on auto parts coming at a later date; and a 10% baseline tariff on all US imports.

The administration also introduced temporary exemptions for some electronic goods, and Trump has said separate tariffs are likely coming down the pike on semiconductors, pharmaceuticals, copper and timber.

“Jerome Powell just laid down the law with Trump,” David Russell, global head of market strategy at TradeStation, said in commentary issued Wednesday. “It was a clear warning about stagflation, and a declaration that the Fed won’t enable the White House with rate cuts.”
Part of Trump’s tariffs will be paid ‘by the public’

Trump has repeatedly claimed foreign countries pay tariffs levied on them, but Powell noted Wednesday that is not the case.

As a result of the tariffs that Trump has enacted, with likely more to come, “unemployment is likely to go up as the economy slows,” Powell said.

“In all likelihood,” inflation is likely to go up as well, he said. That is to say that a portion of the burden of tariffs is going to be “paid by the public.”

It’s all but certain that prices will rise from tariffs, Powell said, but it’s still a question as to whether that will cause overall inflation levels to accelerate and to what extent.

Does the Fed have a good playbook?

The Fed might be confronted with a challenge it hasn’t dealt with in decades.

In the 1970s and early 1980s, the US economy suffered periods of high unemployment and double-digit inflation, a troublesome combination known as “stagflation.” Back then, under the leadership of Fed Chair Paul Volcker, the Fed prioritized fighting inflation, even if it meant inflicting some economic pain.

The US economy seems to be heading in that direction, according to most forecasts, but it’s unclear whether or not it will fully reach that point. Chicago Fed President Austan Goolsbee said last week at an event in New York that Trump’s tariffs are putting the central bank in that same tough spot.

“A tariff is like a negative supply shock. That’s a stagflationary shock, which is to say it makes both sides of the Fed’s dual mandate worse at the same time,” he said. “Prices are going up while jobs are being lost and growth is coming down, and there is not a generic playbook for how the central bank should respond to a stagflationary shock.”

Powell said if stagflation does become a reality, “we would consider how far the economy is from each goal, and the potentially different time horizons over which those respective gaps would be anticipated to close.”

“We understand that elevated levels of unemployment or inflation can be damaging and painful for communities, families, and businesses,” he said.

Several Fed officials have said that the central bank should keep a close eye on people’s perception of prices, which have deteriorated based on the University of Michigan’s closely watched consumer survey. It’s unclear at what point rising inflation expectations would prompt any action from the Fed and what those moves would be.

And inflation, albeit substantially below a four-decade peak reached in June 2022, is still slightly above the Fed’s 2% target, meaning the Fed has less of a reason to resume cutting interest rates.

But for now, most officials seem to agree that it’s best to wait for any evidence to show up in the data.

“This is a difficult set of risks for monetary policy to navigate,” Cleveland Fed President Beth Hammack said Wednesday at an event in Columbus, Ohio. “Given the economy’s starting point, and with both sides of our mandate expected to be under pressure, there is a strong case to hold monetary policy steady in order to balance the risks coming from further elevated inflation and a slowing labor market.”

“When clarity is hard to come by, waiting for additional data will help inform the path ahead,” she added.

NPP 2024 Defeat: Prof Oquaye-Committee presents report to National Council

0

By Christopher Arko

Accra, April 17, GNA – The Professor Aaron Mike Oquaye Committee, which investigated the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) defeat in the 2024 general election, Wednesday presented its report to the National Council of the party in Accra.

The 12-member committee, which the former Speaker of Parliament chaired, was mandated to assess the factors that contributed to the NPP’s loss and recommend strategies for rebuilding the party and prepare for future elections.

The report was presented during two crucial meetings by the Party at the Alisa Hotel to deliberate on its future direction.

The first meeting was held by the National Executive Committee and the second by the National Council, which is the second highest decision-making body of the main opposition party.

It is expected that the findings would play a pivotal role in shaping the NPP’s strategy, moving forward.

Mr Justine Kodua Frimpong, the General Secretary, NPP, said the details remained an internal party matter and cautioned party members not to speculate to avoid misinforming the public.

“We have just received the report, and we are yet to go into the details. In the coming days whatever we need to communicate to our members and rank file of our party we will do so,” he said.

He also emphasised the need for internal reflection and careful deliberation on the findings before any public disclosure.

Mr Frimpong said the National Council had constituted a nine-member committee to review its constitution, looking at the Prof Oquaye report, especially on the proposals for amendments, to aid its work.

The move is aimed at addressing structural and organisational issues identified by the report, with the goal of strengthening internal mechanisms and preventing future electoral setbacks.

The emergency meeting was attended by key party figures, including former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, 2024 presidential candidate Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, former running mate Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh, the Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin, and other top party executives.

It would be recalled that the New Patriotic Party, in January this year, set up a 12-member committee to investigate the party’s defeat in the 2024 general election.

It has, for the past three months, engaged stakeholders, including journalists, party members, grassroots supporters, and political analysts to collect information that would ensure a thorough review.

Party members and supporters were encouraged to contribute and support the fact-finding process to ensure a comprehensive and impactful investigation.

By Benard Worlali Awumee

Anloga, (V/R), April 17, 2025, GNA. Madam Sandra Seyram  Kpedor, the new District Chief Executive (DCE) of the Anloga District Assembly, has begun a familiarization tour of key public facilities within the district.

The tour, which came off Wednesday 16th April, marked her first official duty, began with visits to some key institutions and structures, including the ongoing District Assembly office complex.

While inspecting the projects, Madam Kpedor expressed her interest in ensuring these essential facilities’ timely completion and functionality.

“I believe that leadership must begin with first-hand knowledge of the situation on the ground. These sites are not just structures; they are the foundation for effective administration and service delivery.” She indicated.

She also inspected vital equipment, including the District Road Improvement Project (DRIPS) machines, and interacted with some site engineers to understand their needs and challenges.

The DCE’s next stop was the newly completed car park in Anloga, which is yet to be officially commissioned. Impressed by the quality of work, she  emphasised its relevance in addressing transportation and congestion challenges for both drivers and pedestrians.

At the Anloga Fire Service station, DCE held a meeting with the Chief Fire Officer and her team, discussing the challenges they face in ensuring public safety. The interaction allowed her to better appreciate the dedication of the personnel and the logistical constraints confronting the service.

“Our security and emergency services are the silent guardians of our communities. It is our responsibility to ensure they have the resources they need to perform effectively,” she remarked.

The final visit was to the Anloga Magistrate Court, where the DCE engaged the Magistrate and staff in a cordial discussion. The visit focused on understanding the judicial system at the district level and identifying areas where the Assembly could lend support.

During her interaction with the Ghana News Agency after the tour, she disclosed her motive behind the tour

“This tour is not symbolic, but it represents my leadership style, engaged, responsive, and committed to inclusive development. Together, we will build a stronger District.”

She also promised a very transformative leadership where she promised to priories infrastructural development for education and health.

Her proactive approach has already drawn positive attention from stakeholders in the district who see it as a promising start to a tenure focused on transparency, institutional strengthening, and grassroots development.

Ejisu Landowners Petition Asantehene –

0

Isaac Opoku addressing the media

A group of landowners from nine communities within the Ejisu Municipality, have formally petitioned His Royal Majesty Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, expressing deep concerns over what they describe as deliberate misinformation surrounding a disputed 1,950-acre parcel of land.

The petitioners, who hail from Asarpong, Abenase, Ampabame, Ejisu-Manhyia, Hwereso, and Adadientem, Nyinatase, Donald and Aduapokyere, stated that they have never received any compensation from the Ghana Free Zones Authority (GFZA) for the said land, despite claims made by certain traditional leaders before the Asantehene at the Manhyia Palace.

In their petition dated April 1, 2025, the landowners expressed profound appreciation to the Asantehene for boldly affirming the truth during a previous engagement—that no financial transaction had ever occurred between the GFZA and the landowners.

“We are grateful to Asantehene for courageously stating the truth—that we (petitioners) have not benefited from any sale of our lands to the GFZA,” the petition read.

The landowners accused some unnamed chiefs of allegedly misleading the Manhyia Traditional Council by falsely claiming that payments had been made, and that the lands were available for government development. According to them, those chiefs acted in bad faith, having already sold parts of the land without the knowledge or consent of the rightful owners.

Recounting the timeline of events, the petitioners explained that the GFZA approached them in 2004 to acquire the land but failed to return or finalise the process. After more than two decades of silence, the petitioners resumed full control and began developing or legally transferring the land to others, many of whom have since built permanent homes and businesses.

“There are no longer any lands available for the Ghana Free Zones Authority. We have developed our lands or lawfully handed them over to others who have built permanent homes,” the petitioners emphasised.

Speaking to the media, the leader of the group, Isaac Opoku, said the prolonged inaction by the GFZA compelled them to sell the land to private developers.

“For over 25 years now, GFZA has not compensated us. Therefore, we have also sold the lands to private developers. People have built their homes on the lands,” he stated.

Some of the landowners appealed to the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, for forgiveness over their decision to sell the land, acknowledging that while it was a difficult step, it became necessary after years of frustration and neglect.

The petition not only seeks to clarify the true history behind the land transaction but also serves as a formal notice to the Manhyia Traditional Council that any future claim by the GFZA would be untenable.

This latest development sheds light on the complex tensions between traditional leadership, state agencies, and local landowners in the Ashanti Region, especially regarding land acquisition, delayed government projects, and accountability.

Majority of Ghanaians support removal of Chief Justice

0

A poll by Global InfoAnalytics has shown that majority of Ghanaians support the removal of Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkornoo.

The survey, conducted between April 7 and April 16, 2025, sampled 2,545 voters across all 16 regions of Ghana.

The findings show that 52% of voters support the Chief Justice’s removal, while 20% oppose it. Additionally, 18% of respondents were neutral, and 10% expressed no opinion.

When those who opposed, were neutral, or had no opinion were asked if they would support the removal if evidence of legal misconduct emerged, 30% indicated they would support it, while 35% remained opposed, 19% stayed neutral, and 16% still had no opinion.

The poll also highlighted regional variations in voter sentiment. In the Greater Accra Region, 58% of respondents supported the Chief Justice’s removal, compared to 16% who opposed it. In the Central Region, 51% supported the move, while 16% opposed it. However, the Ahafo and Upper East regions were exceptions, where support for removal was not the majority view.

Educational background also played a role in shaping opinions. Among respondents with junior high school (JHS) education, 57% supported the removal, compared to 17% who opposed it. For those with senior high school (SHS) education, 50% supported the move, while 21% opposed it. Among tertiary-educated respondents, 54% supported the removal, and 18% opposed it. Even among those without formal education, 37% supported the removal, while 30% opposed it.

Political affiliations further influenced voter opinions. Among those who voted for John Dramani Mahama in the 2024 election, 79% supported the Chief Justice’s removal, while only 4% opposed it.

Conversely, among voters who supported Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, 17% backed the removal, while 47% opposed it. For voters who supported other candidates, 38% were in favor, 19% opposed, and 23% were neutral.

The poll underscores the complex dynamics of public opinion surrounding the Chief Justice’s role and highlights the influence of regional, educational, and political factors on voter sentiment. It remains to be seen how these findings will shape the national discourse on judicial leadership in Ghana.

Ghana will this year host the Accelerate Africa’s Growth Conference (AAGC), a high-level Pan-African forum aimed at driving economic transformation through the empowerment of women, youth, and small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).

At a press briefing held on April 16, 2025, at Jubilee House, organisers announced that Accra will welcome over 1,500 delegates from across Africa and the diaspora, marking the first time the conference will be held in Ghana.

The event is being organised by Timeless Women of Wonder – Africa (TWOW-Africa), a Pan-African development organisation focused on inclusive economic growth.

The 2025 edition of the conference is strategically aligned with Ghana’s ongoing national RESET agenda, which emphasises new development models, inclusive growth, and economic re-engineering. Organisers say this makes Ghana a fitting host at a pivotal time in its transformation journey.

Held annually and rotated among African countries, the conference has evolved from the Timeless Women Conference series, first launched in 2015. Past editions have featured influential African leaders, including the Presidents of Malawi and Ethiopia, and the Vice President of Liberia.

Over the past decade, the conference has catalysed policy reforms and practical economic programs in host countries, notably upskilling over 35,000 women for the construction industry in Kenya.

“This year’s conference marks a new chapter. With the rebranding to AAGC and its alignment with Africa Day, we’re deepening ownership of Africa’s development by Africans themselves—both at home and abroad,” said the convener, H.E. Nyakan June.

The conference will spotlight innovative, practical solutions to job creation and inclusive wealth-building, while fostering a Pan-African network of changemakers. Organisers also revealed that 60% of delegates are expected to be Ghanaian, ensuring strong local participation and impact.

Meanwhile, the Director of Diaspora Affairs at the Office of the President, Kofi Okyere Darko, has pledged the Ghanaian government’s full support for the event.

Here are 3 persons who have lashed out at the Kumasi Mayor over his comments

0

The new Mayor of Kumasi, Richard Ofori Agyemang Boadi, has come under heavy criticism from Ghanaians, who have labelled his remarks as reckless.

This controversy arises from the mayor’s decision to implement measures such as flogging traders, jailing law offenders, or even slaughtering cattle found on the streets of Kumasi for causing disruptions.

On Tuesday, April 15, 2025, during a press conference, the Kumasi Mayor, popularly known as King Zuba, announced that any cattle found within the jurisdiction of the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) would be seized, slaughtered, and their meat sent to the Kumasi Central Prisons to feed inmates.

He further declared that, starting Wednesday, April 16, 2025, traders caught selling on pavements and walkways would face corporal punishment, including flogging.

These remarks have sparked backlash from politicians and prominent figures across the country.

While some deem his comments reckless and argue that such statements should neither be entertained nor tolerated, some have even called for his dismissal.

While at that, this GhanaWeb piece explores some notable Ghanaians who have, meanwhile, slammed the mayor over those comments he made

Kwesi Pratt Jnr

The Managing Editor of the Insight Newspaper, Kwesi Pratt Jnr, questioned the effectiveness of the selection process for Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs).

Commenting on the issue on Metro TV, Kwesi Pratt said he was completely shocked by the mayor’s public display of lawlessness.

“For me, the most important question is; how did such a person get appointed as the Metropolitan Chief Executive for Kumasi? How did he get appointed, and who interviewed him? That is the critical question for me. From the way he is talking, if you sit down with him for five minutes, it should be possible to discern what his orientation is. But he was interviewed, he went through the system, and got approval to become the Metropolitan Chief Executive of one of the biggest cities in Ghana.

“This is the shock. The shock is not so much about what he said, but how he got to that position. Something is seriously wrong with the system of appointment. I am completely scandalised by the kind of statements he is making. I think I would be even more scandalised if, after this display, he is still at post. If, after this display, he is still at post, it would be a huge statement about the appointing authorities and those who choose to leave him there. This would not be tolerated anywhere,” Pratt stated.

Akosua Manu

A member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Communications Team, Akosua Manu, has called on President John Dramani Mahama to sack the mayor due to what she termed as threats of physical assault on traders.

In an interview on ChannelOne News and monitored by GhanaWeb on Wednesday, April 16, 2025, the 2024 NPP Parliamentary Candidate for the Adentan Constituency stated that physical assault must be condemned, as it departs from acceptable standards of governance.

“What I do not understand is that somebody put into a leadership role can’t stand in front of people to warn or to threaten them of physical assault.

“He assumed a position in two weeks, truth be told, he should have been the shortest-serving appointee in this government. Upon hearing that he had repeated physical assault as a likely punishment to deter hawkers, the president should have called the Chief of Staff to withdraw him immediately,” she noted.

Amnesty International boss

The Board Chairman of Amnesty International Ghana, Francis Nyantakyi, has also criticised Richard Ofori Agyemang Boadi for his apparent disregard for the rule of law.

Reacting to the mayor’s comments in an interview with Joy FM, and monitored by GhanaWeb, he stated that the mayor has no place in Ghana’s governance if he does not uphold the rule of law.

“We need to analyse and find ways to support these men and women to do their business legitimately without endangering their lives, not to threaten them.

“The most unfortunate part of this situation is that the Mayor seems not to believe in the rule of law. And anyone who does not believe in the rule of law has no business in the governance of our country,” he said.

He added, “For heaven’s sake, Ghana is a democratic country. We believe in the protection of human rights, enshrined in Chapter Five of the Constitution. So, for a mayor to say he doesn’t trust the police and will instead put his own men in the back of a pickup truck to assault people — I mean, it is very unfortunate,” Nyantakyi said.

Gold Fields has not invested in Damang Mine in two years – Lands minister explains

Emmanuel Kofi Armah-Buah is the Minister of Lands and Natural Resources Emmanuel Kofi Armah-Buah is the Minister of Lands and Natural Resources

The Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Kofi Armah-Buah, has explained the government’s decision to reject the renewal of Gold Fields’ mining lease for the Damang Mine.

According to him, the company failed to meet the necessary renewal requirements, prompting the government’s decision.

This clarification comes after several industry players called on the government to provide a categorical explanation for the rejection of Gold Fields’ lease after 30 years of operation.

The company’s current lease is set to expire on April 18, 2025.

Speaking at a press conference on April 16, 2025, the minister said, “Gold Fields has failed to allocate any budget for exploration at Damang for the past two years. In essence, the company was not prepared, as required by law, to expend resources on exploration activities to discover new ore bodies or convert existing mineral resources into mineral reserves to support a mining program or operation.

“This lack of investment raises serious concerns about the company’s commitment to sustainable mining practices and the long-term viability of this particular mine,” he stated.

Rio Ferdinand chooses Camavinga over Partey as best midfielder

0

Manchester United legend, Rio Ferdinand Manchester United legend, Rio Ferdinand

Legendary Manchester United player Rio Ferdinand has stated that Real Madrid midfielder Eduardo Camavinga is a better midfielder than Ghanaian Thomas Partey.

He indicated that, based on both players’ performances this season and previously, he would choose the French midfielder over the Black Stars player.

The former England defender didn’t provide detailed reasons for his decision but made his choice based on his knowledge of both players.

During a Q&A session, when Ferdinand was asked to choose between Camavinga and Partey, he quickly responded, “Camavinga.”

His pick didn’t sit well with some football fans, who believe Partey’s current form for Arsenal puts him ahead of Camavinga, who often doesn’t start games for Real Madrid.

The Ghanaian midfielder has been key for Arsenal in the 2024/2025 season, particularly in the UEFA Champions League, where he masterminded the midfield to help them win 5-1 on aggregate against Real Madrid and advance to the semifinals.

He’s also been instrumental for the Black Stars in their two wins against Madagascar and Chad in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, where he scored and assisted a goal.

US-Somali airstrike as battle rages for key town

0

Al-Shabab has in recent months regrouped and launched a series of counter-attacks Al-Shabab has in recent months regrouped and launched a series of counter-attacks

The US and Somalia have carried out an airstrike against Islamist militants during a battle for control of a strategic central town, the government says.

The “well-coordinated” strike on Adan Yabaal, north of the capital Mogadishu, came hours after al-Shabab raided the town which is used as a key launchpad for military operations.

Among the 12 militants killed in the airstrike were several senior fighters from the al-Qaeda-linked group, the Somali information ministry said in a statement on X.

The latest fighting comes amid fears of a jihadist resurgence in Somalia after growing militant attacks, including one that targeted President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud’s convoy last month.

Al-Shabab, which controls large parts of southern and central Somalia, has been fighting the government for nearly 20 years. It seeks to overthrow the federal government and establish an Islamist state.

The African Union-led peacekeeping force helped push the jihadists onto the defensive in 2022 and 2023, but the group remains a big threat despite numerous military operations against it.

The Somali government insists the group has been weakened.

The airstrike late on Wednesday by Somali armed forces and the US Africa Command (Africom) “aimed to neutralize the threat posed” by militants, the information ministry said.

“The targeted strike hit a site used by the militants as a gathering and hideout,” it said, adding: “Importantly there were no civilian casualties.”

Adan Yabaal, in the Middle Shabelle region, was seized by al-Shabab in 2016 before being recaptured by government forces in 2022.

Heavy fighting broke out early on Wednesday after al-Shabab fighters raided the town, using heavy explosives.

Later the group said it had captured the town. Two local residents told AFP news agency that militants had taken control of Adan Yabaal.

The government did not say who was currently in control of the town.

President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud visited the town last month and met military commanders, underscoring its strategic significance in the fight against the militants.

In a separate incident, the national army said it killed at least 35 fighters near the city of Baidoa on Thursday, after they attempted to attack an army base there, the ministry said.

President Mohamud has downplayed the al-Shabab advances, saying that occasional battlefield setbacks were inevitable. He has maintained that his government was determined to defeat the militants.

Govt reschedules National Sanitation Day to May 3

0

The Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy, and Religious Affairs, Ahmed Ibrahim, has announced that the National Sanitation Day (NSD) has been rescheduled from April 5 to Saturday, May 3, 2025.

Ibrahim explained that the clean-up exercise will be approached as an emergency operation, with strong backing from environmental service providers and the government to ensure full nationwide involvement.

“The National Sanitation Day on May 3 is going to be an emergency evacuation where all environmental service providers are going to be onboard. They are going to bring their logistics, the government is going to partner with them.

“We are all going to clean, desilt all our gutters, send all the plastic waste to the recycling plant, and then the organic waste to wherever we have to send them. Thankfully, the patronage is being appreciated—people want to come onboard,” he stated.

Ibrahim revealed this to the media on the sidelines of an engagement with key leaders of major Christian religious institutions, including the Christian Council of Ghana (CCG), the Presbyterian Church of Ghana Headquarters, and the Seventh-day Adventist Church in the Greater Accra region on Tuesday, April 15, 2025.

The meeting formed part of broader consultations with faith-based organizations aimed at galvanizing national support and fostering community participation for the success of the National Sanitation Day initiative.

Ibrahim said the government was working on long-term measures to encourage waste segregation and responsible disposal among citizens. According to him, this will help prevent the spread of diseases like cholera, which still affect some areas.

As part of the sanitation effort, some recycling equipment has been acquired to help manage plastic waste and improve hygiene across the country.

“While a ban on plastics may not be immediately feasible, our primary strategy is to promote recycling. With recycling plants already established in the country, the focus now is on public education and waste segregation,” he said.

Ibrahim also called on Christian leaders to use their platforms, especially during the Easter period, to encourage a national culture of cleanliness and sanitation.
