Ghana Inflation Rate Declines | Business Insider Africa

0

According to Ghana’s statistics office, the country’s consumer inflation, decreased marginally from 23.8% in December to 23.5% in January year-over-year.

Samuel Kobina Annim, a government statistician for the West African Gold Coast, disclosed to the media during a press conference that the decline was brought on by a slowing in non-food inflation, as reported by Reuters.

However, food prices are still on the rise. “Although the rate of inflation has slowed down by 0.3 percentage points, the figure of 23.5% is the second highest in the last nine months,” Annim stated.

Prior to this decline, Ghana’s inflation rate had risen for the fourth straight month leading up to its December figures.

The country’s current rate although a little lower than the previous month, is slightly higher than November’s figure, which came in at 23.0%.

A month later, Ghana recorded its third-highest inflation rate in the previous 13 months and the highest in the last eight months.

Given the West African country’s current inflation rate, which highlights the country’s worst economic cries in a generation, the figure remains significantly over the Bank of Ghana’s 8% objective, with a margin of error of two percentage points on each side.

The West African country of Ghana which thrives from the sale of cocoa and gold, is experiencing its greatest economic crisis in decades.

People have been finding it more difficult to pay for their everyday necessities as a result of these problems.

This issue and the declining value of Ghana’s currency, the Cedi, are the two main issues that their new president, John Dramani Mahama, who recently began his second term, has pledged to address.

This move was made in expectation of lower pricing pressures as the country’s new leadership tightens budgetary policy.

Ernest Addison, the governor of Ghana’s central bank, told reporters during a press briefing in the capital, Accra, on the 27th of January that the monetary policy committee kept the rate at 27%.

She is a mother – Ahiafor defends Clerk Gifty Jiagge-Gobah amid controversy

Clerk to Appointments Committee, Gifty Jiagge-Gobah Clerk to Appointments Committee, Gifty Jiagge-Gobah

Chairman of the Appointments Committee of Parliament, Bernard Ahiafor, has strongly defended the Clerk to the Committee, Gifty Jiagge-Gobah, following criticism from Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin.

Ahiafor, while apologizing on behalf of the Committee, emphasized Jiagge-Gobah’s long-standing dedication and sacrifice, highlighting her as not just an experienced Clerk but also a mother who deserves respect.

“She is a mother, and she has been in this House for 19 years. She doesn’t deserve that, so I expect the Minority Leader to be apologising to the Clerk. He must apologise to the Clerk of the Committee because she doesn’t deserve those words,” Ahiafor stated in an interview with TV3.

His remarks come after Afenyo-Markin publicly criticized Jiagge-Gobah during a parliamentary session, prompting Ahiafor to call for civility and respect, especially towards someone who has dedicated nearly two decades to Parliament’s service.

“The Clerk is not partisan. Partisan in what manner? What he did to the Clerk is rather unfortunate, it is uncalled for, unbecoming of a member of Parliament,” Ahiafor expressed, urging the Minority Leader to follow due process rather than making public outbursts.

Ahiafor further reiterated that Jiagge-Gobah’s position is secure, dismissing any suggestions of her removal.

“If they don’t want to work with Gifty Jiagge-Gobah, then they don’t want to work at the Appointment Committee because, I, as the Chairman, will never recommend her removal. I won’t do that today or tomorrow,” he declared.

Ghana football legend, Abedi Ayew ‘Pele’, has emphasised the importance of financial education in football, citing his own experiences as a player and investor in the sport.

Speaking at the closing ceremony of the three-day FIFA Financial Governance Workshop at the Marriot Hotel in Accra on Friday, January 31, 2025, Pele encouraged the Ghana Football Association (GFA) to share the lessons learned from the workshop with local clubs.

The three-time African Footballer of the Year joined representatives from 10 African countries to close the workshop.

“I am an investor in the game and that singular decision to invest in football was purely based on the fact that I wanted to give back to society after my success on the pitch,” he said.

“I played football to the highest level; met a lot of people who helped my cause and spent money on my career so having an education on finance is very important.”

“As Football Associations and Federations, we owe it a duty to educate our clubs on best financial practices. Let’s spread the word, and make good use of the lessons from this workshop to promote, develop and enhance the game’’ the former Olympique Marseille player added.

The FIFA Financial Governance Workshop took off on Wednesday, attracting participants from Ghana, Nigeria, Liberia, Sierra Leone, Sudan, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Cape Verde, The Gambia, and Kenya.

The workshop covered key topics such as financial management, accountability, transparency, and efficient resource use within football organizations.

The training also provided participants with valuable insights and tools to fortify their organisations’ financial foundations, ensuring long-term sustainability, accountability, and effective resource management in football.

The Head of FIFA Financial Governance, Christopher Suppiger, led the facilitators for the three-day programme.

Others included Lucca Piazza, Director, Reforms Implementation; Meryem Atouk, FIFA’s Finance Services Manager; Andrea Portabella, Senior Capacity Development and Education Manager; Silmara Sousa, FIFA Regional Coordinator for Africa; and Raissa Toure, FIFA Division Office Coordinator.

Maxwell Caesar Kemeh, an experienced administrator at the Competitions Department, served as the Local Liaison Officer for the workshop.

Abedi Ayew ‘Pele’ is a former Ghana black star captain who played for Lyon, Al Ain, 1860 Munich, Al Sadd, FC Zurich, Torino and Olympique Marseille where he won the UEFA Champions League in 1993.

The former Real Tamale United player won 73 caps and scored 19 goals for Ghana during an international career that spanned 16-years.

GPMON commends Bagbin for suspending MPs

0

The Ghana Parliamentary Monitoring Organizations Network (GPMON) has commended the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, for his swift response to the chaos during the vetting of ministerial nominees on January 30, 2025.

In a statement issued on February 3, GPMON lauded the Speaker’s prompt and decisive action to initiate an investigation and hold those responsible accountable, describing it as a crucial step toward preserving the dignity and integrity of Parliament.

“Such actions will help restore discipline and ensure that parliamentary proceedings are conducted with the decorum expected of elected representatives.”

The group also acknowledged the Speaker’s commitment to enforcing the Standing Orders of Parliament.

“Strict enforcement of these rules is a crucial measure to halt the growing decline in parliamentary discipline, rebuild public confidence in democracy, and safeguard the reputation of Ghana’s Parliament.

GPMON recommended the imposition of severe punishments on MPs found culpable to serve as a deterrent to others.

“To serve as a deterrent and reinforce the principle that no one is above the law, we recommend imposing more severe punishments on those found culpable, along with surcharges to cover the damages they have caused.”

Bernard Ahiafor justifies Bagbin’s decision to suspend four MPs

0

The First Deputy Speaker of Parliament and Chairman of the Appointments Committee, Bernard Ahiafor, has defended Speaker Alban Bagbin’s decision to suspend four Members of Parliament.

The MPs were suspended on Friday, January 31, following a chaotic incident that led to the destruction of tables and microphones. The Minority had resisted further vetting, but the Majority proceeded after exhausting the initial schedule for the day.

Opinions on the Speaker’s decision have been divided, with some condemning it as unlawful while others praising it as a necessary intervention.

In an interview with Bernard Avle on The Point of View on Channel One TV, Mr. Ahiafor clarified the Speaker’s authority in such situations, stating, “People are not getting it right. As a private legal practitioner, if I reduce it to a courtroom practice, we have two types of those incidents, the one that happened outside the court when you need evidence to establish, but the one within the court, you need no evidence to take a decision as a judge.

“…In matters of this nature where you have to take a decision in one way or the way other, you are playing the role of a judge.”

Speaker Alban Bagbin on January 31, 2025, following the violent confrontations during the vetting on Thursday, January 30, also established a seven-member committee. Its mandate is to identify those responsible and recommend appropriate sanctions.

To facilitate public engagement, the committee has created a WhatsApp platform for information submissions.

The committee will conduct public hearings, providing individuals the opportunity to testify openly about the chaotic scenes that disrupted proceedings.

The committee, chaired by Ho West MP Emmanuel Bedzrah, includes members Kwame Anyimadu-Antwi, Gizella Akushika Tetteh-Agbotui, Abena Osei Asare, Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings, Vincent Oppong Asamoah, and Bede Anwataazuma Ziedeng.

Speaker Bagbin has made it clear that no public funds will be used to repair damages caused by the altercations. Instead, MPs found guilty of misconduct will be surcharged for repair costs.

Meanwhile, four MPs are currently serving a two-week suspension due to their involvement in the chaos. The committee’s findings are expected to help restore decorum and accountability in Parliament.

Vetting chaos was completely unnecessary, needless – Bernard Ahiafor

Volta now positioned to develop

0

James Gunu, Volta Regional minister James Gunu, Volta Regional minister

James Gunu, Volta Regional minister has called on the media particularly those in the region to proudly flaunt its credentials prominently to the outside world.

He said the region was now positioned to develop massively in sectors including agribusiness, manufacturing and tourism and there was the need for media which he deemed “partners in development” to support.

Gunu, said this when he interacted with the regional executives and some members of the Volta/Oti Chapter of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) in Ho.

The Regional Minister, who is a veteran media practitioner and a member of the GJA was grateful for the solidarity he had received from the people since his nomination through to his approval and pledged his commitment to meet the expectations of the people of the region.

He pledged to work together with the media throughout his administration.

“I see the GJA as key to the success of my administration. I want to give you that assurance that we’re going to work together to meet the expectations of our people. We made several promises to our people based on which they gave us the mandate.

Volta Region is now positioned to develop massively in the road sector, in the education sector, tourism and creative arts, agriculture and agribusiness, health, etc. And I am going to lead the charge in the region. I need your support. I need your cooperation because we are in this together and I believe we shall succeed together.”

Gunu noted that he would involve other key stakeholders like the traditional authorities, Members of Parliament, and Municipal and District Chief Executives in his administration as they were crucial in achieving the people’s expectations.

He hinted that he had no intention of relaxing when the people of the region had issues, mentioning the water crisis in the capital and noted that he would employ every available opportunity to tackle the issue as “water is life… water is religion.”

“So, I am just appealing to you, colleagues to help in your reportage. Let us sell Volta Region to the outside world so that investors will come in…,” Mr Gunu called.

Emmanuel Agbaxode, Regional Chairman Volta/Oti-GJA on behalf of members, congratulated the Regional Minister on his new role and assured him of the Association’s support and cooperation for his work for the common good of the region and the country.

Mawutor Agbavitor, Volta Regional Chairman of the governing National Democratic Congress said with Gunu’s energy in addition to the fact that “Volta is at the heart of President John Dramani Mahama,” it could only get better for the region.

Gospel Musicians Performing at Secular Events: ‘Everybody has their assignments’

0

Ghanaian gospel sensation, Diana Hamilton Ghanaian gospel sensation, Diana Hamilton

Ghanaian gospel sensation, Diana Hamilton, has weighed in on the ongoing debate about gospel musicians performing at secular events.

Speaking in an interview with Hitz FM, Hamilton emphasised that the primary focus should be on the message being delivered, rather than the venue.

“Jesus came not for the saved, but for the lost. When He sends you, He equips you for where and to whom He’s sending you. Everyone has their assignment. Somebody’s assignment is to reach the elite who don’t believe in God. They think they have it all, and so they need to be approached in a way that resonates with them,” Hamilton stated.

Hamilton’s comments come in response to criticism faced by gospel artiste, Broda Sammy, who has been performing at secular events as part of his outreach to non-religious audiences.

Broda Sammy explained that his goal is to bring people to Christ by meeting them where they are, even if it means performing at non-traditional venues.

“We all have our assignments; maybe that is his assignment, and he is reaching out to them. And so, let’s leave Broda Sammy to do his ministry as he says God has asked,” Hamilton added.

Addressing the broader issue of gospel musicians performing at secular events, Hamilton argued that the key is the message being shared.

“We do weddings; we do birthday parties. The thing is, what message are you taking there? I’m taking Jesus Christ, Him crucified, Him loving us, regardless. I’m telling you that Jesus loves you, regardless,” she said.

Hamilton stressed that Jesus’ mission was to reach the unsaved, and Christians should follow His example by stepping out of their comfort zones to bring others to faith.

“He didn’t come for the saints. He came for the lost, the unsaved. And when He brings you to Himself, He expects you to bring the others on the other side. Go and bring them. Don’t stay there,” she added.

Govt will maintain teacher trainee allowance

0

Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu

The Minister of Education, Mr Haruna Iddrisu, says the government will transition students at the colleges of education onto an enhanced student loan scheme to ensure the delays in accessing financial support by the students are dealt with once and for all.

He said even though that remained the plans of government, such transition decision would only be taken based on recommendation that would emanate from the impeding education dialogue proposed by the President, John Dramani Mahama.

The Minister who disclosed this during a meeting with some Principals of Colleges of Education at his office over the weekend in Accra, however, assured that teacher trainee allowance would be maintained for the time being.

The education conference, scheduled between February 17 and 20 is aimed at addressing the challenges facing the country’s education sector.

Mr Iddrissu said “But more importantly you raise the issue of student allowances, it will continue. The continuation of student allowances is crucial, as it directly impacts the well-being and future prospects of students,” he said.

The minister said the move was to promote autonomy and self-sufficiency among students to ensure development.

“There is no way you should be feeding a student at the tertiary level offhand. We will work out a transition from the allowance into an enhanced student loan for them to feed themselves but in the interim they will still get the allowance,” he said.

The Minister of Education expressed gratitude and commendation for the efforts made to resolve pressing issues affecting the teaching staff at colleges of education.

Mr Iddrisu acknowledged the challenges facing these institutions, particularly in terms of infrastructure deficits and lack of academic facilities.

The Minister assured that the government would make sufficient allocations to address these issues, although he noted that the allocations may be inadequate due to competing demands from various educational levels.

“When I say inadequate in the sense that we have to share the bread and we have to share it from preschool, junior high school, senior high school, tertiary but we particularly take note of you,” he assured.

For his part, the President of the Principals of Colleges of Education (PRINCOF), Professor Samuel Awinkene Atintono, highlighted several challenges facing the education sector, emphasising the need for urgent attention from the Ministry of Education.

“As you call on us, there’s always need for us to dialogue, and I’ll probably give you an update to let you see how the colleges are standing, what are the issues,” he said.

Prof. Atintono noted that despite the progress made in implementing degree programmes in colleges of education, several challenges persisted.

Prof. Atintono also expressed concern about the delayed payment of allowances, which has caused hardship for teacher trainees and appealed to the minister to intervene and ensure that the allowances were paid promptly to ensure that students were comfortable to learn effectively.

Furthermore, the professor drew attention to the issue of infrastructure deficits in colleges of education, adding that many institutions lack basic facilities, including classrooms, libraries, and operational vehicles.

“I would want you to take note and kindly intervene, otherwise, it becomes an issue and this impedes the learning process,” he said.

Meanwhile, watch as Afenyo-Markin explains how he became rich

‘He sometimes forgets he’s no longer Majority Leader’ – Ahiafor jabs Afenyo-Markin

0

The Chairman of Parliament’s Appointments Committee has taken a swipe at the Minority Leader and Ranking Member on the Committee for what he describes as a failure to adjust to his new role in opposition.

Speaking on PM Express on Monday, February 3, Bernard Ahiafor revealed that while he maintains a good working relationship with Alexander Afenyo-Markin, his behaviour sometimes makes collaboration difficult.

“I have a very good relationship with him, but sometimes I find it very difficult to take the excess,” the First Deputy Speaker admitted.

“I am one particular person who will not agree on one thing with you, and after a few minutes or a few hours, you behave as if that was not what we had agreed upon. It pisses me off.”

Mr Ahiafor’s comments come amid growing tensions between the Minority and the Clerk of the Appointments Committee, with Mr Afenyo-Markin and his party, the New Patriotic Party (NPP), accusing the Clerk of bias.

The disagreement has disrupted vetting proceedings, drawing attention to the internal struggles of the current Minority leadership.

The Adaklu MP dismissed his Effutu counterpart’s claims that the Clerk of the Appointments Committee, Gifty Jiagge-Gobah, was acting in a partisan manner or withholding information from the Minority.

He insisted that all reports are shared transparently with both the Chairman and the Ranking Member.

“There is nothing that the Clerk of the Committee has put out there that we have not agreed upon,” Mr Ahiafor stated.

“There is no occasion that the Clerk will not give me and the Minority Leader a draft report. Even if you go back to recap, there are instances where the two of us will be sitting down there, and the Clerk will hold two reports and give me one, give him one in full glare of the camera. So I don’t know why he is alleging that he’s not been given reports.”

Bernard Ahiafor further suggested that Afenyo-Markin’s behaviour stems from his previous position as Majority Leader, making it difficult for him to adjust to his new role in opposition.

“It’s about time he realises that he is no longer Majority Leader, but he’s a Minority Leader. He can use any adjectives to describe himself—mighty and happy Minority—but for me, he is a Minority Leader,” Mr Ahiafor argued.

He explained that in parliamentary practice, Clerks take direction from the Chairman of the Committee, not the Ranking Member, a fact Mr Afenyo-Markin has struggled to accept.

“It doesn’t look like he’s the only one that is that way. Majority Leaders and Chairmen of Committees give information and take decisions from the Clerk, but by our practice, Clerks of Committees don’t take decisions from the Ranking Member.

“They take decisions from the Chairman of the Committee. That is why their letters mostly read, ‘I have been directed by the Chairman of the Committee,’ not the Ranking Member,” he clarified.

Mr Ahiafor maintained that Mr Afenyo-Markin’s perspective remains shaped by his time in the Majority and urged him to adjust to the realities of opposition.

“Because he’s coming from the Majority point of view, sometimes I believe he forgets himself and doesn’t come to the realisation that he is operating from a Minority point of view,” he noted.

Two friends jailed ten years each for stealing

0

The Asante Akropong Circuit Court in the Atwima Nwabiagya North District has sentenced two friends to 10 years imprisonment each for conspiring, possessing firearms without authority, causing damage, and stealing at Sokoban, a suburb of Kumasi.

Charles Antwi alias Kojo Fosu, 49, a carpenter and Francis Abobi alias Seaman, 41, a farmer, pleaded guilty and were convicted on their own plea.

Police detective Inspector Kwame Boakye Agyemang, prosecuting, told the court presided over by Gloria Mensah Bonsu that the complainant, Ama Boakyewaa Asomani, a teacher at Kumasi Suame-Anomangye, reported an incident of burglary at her residential apartment at Sokoban Ampabame by unknown persons.

He said on January 28, this year, at about 1900 hours, the complainant returned home and detected the damage to her door and the theft of her 42 inches television set valued at GH¢7,800, a Samsung ‘A’ 52 series valued at GH¢3,500 and a CCTV hard drive.

She reported the incident to the Ashanti Regional Police Intelligence Directorate (PID), and its investigations led to the arrest of the two convicts at their hideout at Effiduase-Asamang in the Sekyere East District.

During a search, one cutlass, a pinch bar, a glass cutter, two pliers, two pistol guns, a cartridge and three smartphones were retrieved from them.

In their caution statement, they admitted the offence, and they were charged and brought before the court.

Energy minister investigates Dubik Mahama’s 2,500 locked-up ECG containers

0

John Abdulai Jinapor and Samuel Dubik Mahama John Abdulai Jinapor and Samuel Dubik Mahama

The Minister of Energy and Green Transition, John Abdulai Jinapor, has inaugurated a five-member committee to investigate the cause of over 2,500 uncleared containers procured by the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) and left at the port.

The locked-up containers, linked to ex-ECG Managing Director Samuel Dubik Mahama, which contain critical materials purchased under the previous administration, have accrued demurrage charges amounting to an alarming GH¢1.5 billion.

Claims from the ECG’s Procurement department are said to contain certain consumables. Some of the purchases done, according to The Herald’s insiders, could last the next 20 years. They include socks, reflective vexes, and EGC clothes of different designs.

The Herald’s information is that most of these items are being forced on the workers by the current management of ECG to give legitimacy to the procurement craze.

According to reports, most procurements by EGC under Samuel Dubik Mahama did not go through competitive tender.

He had allegedly collapsed the procurement department, merged it with the estate department, and went out procuring stuff, disregarding value for money.

The situation exposes significant lapses in resource management and inter-agency coordination, resulting in a substantial financial burden on the nation.

The committee, which has been given a one-month deadline, will also investigate ECG’s general procurement practices, the cost of the containers, liabilities involved and recommend solutions on the way forward for the containers to stop mounting financial liabilities.

Prof. Innocent Senyo Akwasi, a professor in procurement and supply chain management, chairs the committee.

The other members are Georgette Emefa Fuga, Secretary; Vivian Ablakely, Abdulai Rahman; and Noble Yaw Kyei Addonu.

The Minister questioned why ECG had not cleared the containers, which contained critical materials, despite the suppliers presenting their bill of lading.

“We cannot sit idle and allow 1.5 billion cedis to be lost due to procurement failures.

“We cannot continue with business as usual; something must be done,” he stated, urging the committee to complete its work within one month.

The establishment of this committee, he said, formed part of efforts towards addressing the ongoing challenges within ECG and ensuring a more sustainable energy future for the country.

He added that following the committee’s report, the Ministry would work with other sector ministries, such as the Office of the Attorney General and Ministry of Justice, to delve deeply into the findings, adding, “Whoever is found culpable, the law will take its course.”

Days after taking office, the Energy Minister, John Abdulai Jinapor, conducted an inspection tour of the Tema Harbour to assess the status of approximately 2,500 containers procured by the ECG that remain uncleared at the port.

This visit highlighted the Minister’s commitment to addressing inefficiencies within the energy sector and ensuring the prudent use of national resources.

Jinapor expressed deep concern over the issue, describing it as unacceptable and reaffirming the Ministry’s commitment to improving operational efficiency and accountability.

Musah Superior proposes constitutional reforms to revive NPP

Iddrisu Musah, a former Metropolitan Chief Executive of Tamale Iddrisu Musah, a former Metropolitan Chief Executive of Tamale

Iddrisu Musah, a former Metropolitan Chief Executive of Tamale, has proposed sweeping reforms to revive the New Patriotic Party (NPP) ahead of the next general elections.

In an opinion piece shared with the Ghana News Agency, Musah, popularly known as Musah Superior, called for the abolition of the polling station Organisational layer of the party.

He said the current structure had “outlived its usefulness” and proposed that it should be replaced with community-based NPP executives.

“I propose five member executives for each community to be appointed by the Electoral Area Executives,” he said, adding that electoral area coordinators should also be replaced with seven-member electoral area executives.

Mr. Musah called for all card-bearing members in good standing to be allowed to vote in internal elections of the party, stressing that this would enhance democracy and reduce corruption during the electoral process.

He also proposed the dissolution of the National Council, suggesting the reformation of the National Council of Elders to take on the Council’s responsibilities.

Mr. Musah also emphasized that the National Chairman of the NPP should always be the party’s leader, regardless of whether it was in government or opposition.

“Parliamentary leadership should be selected by Members of Parliament through a formula agreed by the parliamentary group,” he added

Mr. Musah also proposed that members of the National Campaign Team should be appointed by the Party in consultation with the Presidential Candidate.

He said elected officers and Parliamentary Candidates should not be assigned roles on the National Campaign Team.

“We need to strengthen our Research Directorate to ensure that we are up to speed with issues impacting positively and negatively on the party, national economy, voter behaviour,” he said.

The NPP lost as many as 49 seats in the 2024 General Election and failed to retain the Presidency.

The Party’s Flagbearer for the 2024 Election, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, garnered 4,877,611 votes, accounting for 41.75 per cent of certified results from 275 out of 276 constituencies.

The NPP has tasked an 11-member committee chaired by Professor Aaron Mike Oquaye to probe the Party’s defeat in the 2024 General Election.

The committee’s mandate is to assess the factors that contributed to the NPP’s loss and recommend strategies to rebuild the Party and prepare for future elections.

Australia-Ghana partnership key to solving Ghana’s food production challenges – Vice President

Berenice Owen-Jones and Professor Opoku-Agyemang Berenice Owen-Jones and Professor Opoku-Agyemang

Vice President, Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, has emphasised the need for stronger agricultural collaboration between Ghana and Australia to help address food production challenges.

She highlighted Australia’s expertise in agribusiness and Ghana’s abundant arable lands, stating that deeper collaboration in the sector would yield mutual benefits.

Speaking during a courtesy call by Australian High Commissioner Berenice Owen-Jones, Professor Opoku-Agyemang noted that a strategic partnership between the two countries could unlock long-term solutions to Ghana’s agricultural difficulties.

High Commissioner Owen-Jones, in response, revealed plans to expand the Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research (ACIAR) to Ghana.

This initiative, she said, would promote collaborative research and innovation, aligning with the Ghanaian government’s mechanised farming agenda and efforts to achieve food self-sufficiency.

Beyond agriculture, Owen-Jones also pointed out Australia’s significant mining investments in West Africa, estimated at $30 billion, with Ghana hosting a substantial share.

She expressed optimism about Atlantic Lithium’s upcoming project in Ghana, which, pending parliamentary approval, was expected to create over 900 direct jobs and boost local economies.

Professor Opoku-Agyemang commended Australia’s mining expertise while calling for sustainable mining practices that align with Ghana’s developmental goals.

The discussions also touched on Australia’s long-standing commitment to community development through its Direct Aid Program (DAP).

The High Commissioner reaffirmed Australia’s dedication to supporting women, children, and marginalised communities in Ghana through targeted interventions.

Professor Opoku-Agyemang praised the impact of the DAP, urging increased funding to further strengthen local community resilience.

The meeting reaffirmed the commitment of both nations to enhancing cooperation in agriculture, mining, and community development, with a focus on economic growth and sustainability.

Trump says US sovereign wealth fund could buy TikTok

0

US President Donald Trump has taken the first step towards setting up a sovereign wealth fund for the United States and suggested that it could end up buying TikTok.

The president signed an executive order on Monday, to kickstart the process, saying the fund would soon be “one of the biggest”.

More than 90 countries have sovereign wealth funds, investing surplus income for the benefit of future generations. However, the US currently runs a budget deficit.

“We’re going to create a lot of wealth for the fund,” Trump told reporters, without clarifying where the money would come from.

When Trump first floated the idea of a sovereign wealth fund during his election campaign, he suggested it could be funded by “tariffs and other intelligent things”.

He has already announced plans to impose tariffs on imports from America’s three biggest trading partners – China, Mexico and Canada.

But on Tuesday the levies on Mexico and Canada were paused for 30 days.

US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said the fund would be set up within the next 12 months and that the plan was to monetise assets currently owned by the US government “for the American people”.

Saudi Arabia and Norway have two of the world’s largest sovereign wealth funds, supported by the proceeds of fossil fuel sales. They invest in companies and projects around the world.

President Trump has previously said that a US sovereign wealth fund would finance “great national endeavours” including infrastructure projects such as airports, roads as well as medical research.

After signing the executive order for the fund’s creation, he also floated the idea that it could buy up the social media platform TikTok.

The Chinese-owned social media company was briefly taken offline in the US last month, over national security concerns, after the previous administration ordered its owner to sell its US operations or face a ban.

Trump has delayed the ban, promising to find a solution, after TikTok’s US users protested at its shutdown.

“We’re going to be doing something, perhaps with TikTok, and perhaps not,” Trump said. “If we make the right deal, we’ll do it. Otherwise, we won’t… we might put that in the sovereign wealth fund.”

However, the president has also recently said that technology giant Microsoft was in discussions to acquire TikTok and that he would like to see a “bidding war” over the sale of the social media app.

Other big names in tech, including Larry Ellison and Elon Musk, have also been floated as possible buyers.

Fisherman jailed eight years for defiling a four-year-old girl

0

The Gender-Based Violence Court at the Police Headquarters has sentenced a 23-year-old fisherman to eight years imprisonment for defiling a four-year-old girl at Chorkor in Accra.

Joseph Armah, also known as Asaa, charged with defilement, pleaded guilty.

The court, presided over by Dora Eshun, convicted Armah on his own plea and sentenced him accordingly.

The prosecution, led by Chief Inspector Opoku Aniagyei, told the court that the complainant is a boxer residing at Lantemaamli-Chorkor. He is an uncle to the victim, aged four.

The accused person, now a convict, also resided at Chorkor.

On November 29, 2024, at about 1500 hours, Armah saw the victim playing around his area and called her. He offered her a GHC1 coin to buy a biscuit with it. The victim bought the biscuit and consumed it.

Afterwards, Armah held the victim’s hand and took her into his room along the seashore, placed her on a mattress, removed her pants to her kneel level, and had sex with her, the prosecution said.

After the act, Armah travelled to Apam, and the victim left for home.

On reaching home, her mother saw changes in the way she walked and confronted her. The victim told her mother what Armah did.

The mother called the complainant and informed him about the victim’s plight.

The prosecution said a report was made to the police at Mamprobi, and a medical form was issued to the complainant to seek medical care for the girl.

The accused was later arrested, and an investigation caution statement was taken.

Over ₵65,000 lost to online investment fraud by Ghanaians in January

0

The Cyber Security Authority The Cyber Security Authority

The Cyber Security Authority (CSA) reports that in the first 29 days of 2025, unscrupulous online investment schemes cost Ghanaians about GHS 65,860.

The frauds, which mostly take place on social media, lure victims in with promises of enormous profits only to leave them with crippling losses.

At least ten examples have been documented by the CSA thus far, in which scammers have gained credibility by posing as subsidiaries of well-known international businesses, such as the Canadian-based Hut 8 Corporation.

The schemes use targeted social media ads to convince victims to invest in fictitious online business operations or leases for bitcoin mining equipment.

Nevertheless, victims do not get the promised profits or get their original investments back once money is transferred.

“To evade detection, scammers frequently rebrand under new names, including M.F.A., Sunnovagh, Iseetv, Okmarket, and Phoenix,” the CSA statement said.

The CSA has responded by warning the public to use caution when interacting with online investment platforms that promise abnormally large returns.

It suggests that people avoid unsolicited messages or WhatsApp groups that purport to be affiliated with respectable organizations and instead confirm opportunities with recognized regulatory bodies.

Six things that could get more expensive for Americans under Trump tariffs

0

President Donald Trump has hit the pause button – for now, at least – on imposing tariffs against imports from US neighbours Canada and Mexico.

Last-minute agreements with the leaders of Mexico and Canada have suspended for a month a tit-for-tat trade war in North America.

The three trade partners have deeply integrated economies and supply chains, with an estimated $2bn (£1.6bn) worth of manufactured goods crossing the borders daily.

Trump says he wants to protect American industry, but many economists warn such duties could lead to prices rising for consumers in the US.

That’s because tariffs are paid by the domestic company importing the goods, who may choose to pass the cost on to customers directly, or to reduce imports, which would mean fewer products available.

So what could get more expensive if Trump’s tariffs do eventually go ahead?

Cars

Cars would probably go up in price – by about $3,000 according to TD Economics.

That’s because parts cross the US, Canadian and Mexican borders multiple times before a vehicle is assembled.

As a result of higher taxes paid on the importing of parts to build the cars, it is likely the costs will be passed on to customers.

“Suffice it to say that disrupting these trends through tariffs… would come with significant costs,” said Andrew Foran, an economist at TD Economics.

He added “uninterrupted free trade” in the car-making sector had “existed for decades”, which had led to lower prices for consumers.

Beer, Tennessee whiskey and tequila

Getty Images A barman pours a bottle of Modelo beer into a glass Getty Images

Popular Mexican beers Modelo and Corona could get more expensive for US customers if the American companies importing them pass on the increased import taxes.

However, it’s also possible that rather than passing on the cost increase, firms could just import less.

Modelo became the number one beer brand in the US in 2023, and remains in the top spot, for now.

It’s more complex when it comes to spirits. The sector has been largely free of tariffs since the 1990s. Industry bodies from the US, Canada and Mexico issued a joint statement in advance of the tariffs being announced saying they were “deeply concerned”.

They say that certain brands, such as Bourbon, Tennessee whiskey, tequila and Canadian whisky are “recognized as distinctive products and can only be produced in their designated countries”.

So given the production of these drinks cannot simply be moved, supplies might be impacted, leading to price rises. The trade bodies also highlighted that many companies own different spirit brands in all three countries.

Houses

Imports of Canadian lumber would be hit by import tariffs to the US. Trump has said the US has “more lumber than we ever use”.

However, the National Association of Home Builders has urged the president to exempt building materials from the proposed tariffs “because of their harmful effect on housing affordability”.

The industry body has “serious concerns” that the tariffs on lumber could increase the cost of building homes – which are mostly made out of wood in the US – and also put off developers building new homes.

“Consumers end up paying for the tariffs in the form of higher home prices,” the NAHB said.

Maple syrup

Getty Images A worker measures the viscosity of freshly cooked maple syrup at a sugar shack near Lac Brome, Quebec, Canada.Getty Images

When it comes to the trade war with Canada, the “most obvious” household impact would be on the price of Canadian maple syrup, according to Thomas Sampson, associate professor of economics at the London School of Economics.

Canada’s billion-dollar maple syrup industry accounts for 75% of the world’s entire maple syrup production.

The majority of the sweet staple – around 90% – is produced in the province of Quebec, where the world’s sole strategic reserve of maple syrup was set up 24 years ago.

“That maple syrup is going to become more expensive. And that’s a direct price increase that households will face,” Mr Sampson said.

“If I buy goods that are domestically produced in the US, but that are produced using inputs from Canada, the price of those goods is also going to go up,” he added.

Fuel prices

Canada is America’s largest foreign supplier of crude oil. According to the most recent official trade figures, 61% of oil imported into the US between January and November last year came from Canada.

While 25% has been slapped on Canadian goods imported to the US, its energy faces a lower 10% tariff.

Now the US doesn’t have a shortage of oil, but the type its refineries are designed to process means it depends on so-called “heavier” – i.e. thicker – crude oil from mostly Canada and some from Mexico.

“Many refineries need heavier crude oil to maximize flexibility of gasoline, diesel and jet fuel production,” according to the American Fuel and Petrochemical Manufacturers.

That means if Canada decided in retaliation to any US tariffs to reduce crude oil exports, that could lead to prices rising at the petrol pumps.

Avocados

Getty Images Avocados from Mexico at a grocery store in San Francisco, California, US.Getty Images

One food import that American consumers could see a significant price increase in is avocados. Grown primarily in Mexico due to its warm, humid climate, Mexican avocados make up nearly 90% of the US avocado market each year.

However, if tariffs come into force, the US Agriculture Department has warned that the cost of avocados – along with popular avocado-based dishes like guacamole – could surge, especially by Super Bowl Sunday on 9 February.

What about goods in Canada?

Before Trump’s agreement with Justin Trudeau to pause tariffs was announced on Monday, Canada had threatened retaliatory import taxes.

An initial C$30bn tranche had been due to begin on Tuesday – meaning prices would have probably increased for consumers north of the border as well.

Ottawa had released a list of all the US imports that would have immediately been targeted with matching 25% tariffs. They included grocery store staples, like oranges – a produce that Canada cannot grow in abundance due to its cooler climate.

Alcohol originating from the US would also be harder for Canadians to find. Provinces like Ontario, British Columbia, Manitoba, New Brunswick and Nova Scotia said they would pull all American booze off their shelves starting on Tuesday.

Any US alcohol – including beer and wine – that Canadians could find would likely see a price increase, as it’s on the menu for retaliatory tariffs.

Canadian shoppers might feel the pinch from a weaker Canadian dollar if shopping online.

By Patrick Ofoe Nudzi

Accra, Feb. 3, GNA – Madam Emelia Arthur, the newly sworn-in Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture Development (MoFAD), has assumed office and outlined a bold vision of growth to sustain the sector.

She said harnessing the potential of the blue economy was her priority.

There’s also an ambitious plan to leverage Ghana’s marine and freshwater resources for sustainable economic growth.

The Minister said this when she met with the management teams of the Ministry, the Fisheries Commission and the Premix Fuel Secretariat to share her vision and expectations and solicit their contributions.

Madam Arthur also said she would introduce safety standards for canoe construction, monitor illegal fishing practices using an Electronic Monitoring System (EMS) and stablish Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) to preserve biodiversity.

She was also given detailed briefings on the Commission’s challenges, which include overfishing, illegal practices like light fishing and the use of dynamite, insufficient funding and difficulties in data collection.

The Minister discussed strategies to address the concerns and reaffirmed her commitment to supporting the sector’s growth by empowering stakeholders and encouraging teamwork.

She was also briefed on the performance of the sector that the sector recorded a total annual fish production of 684,114.87 metric tons in 2023 with marine fisheries recording 425,423.91 metric tons, inland fisheries getting 142,583.13 metric tons and aquaculture making 116,107.83 metric tons.

Also, in a meeting with the Premix Fuel Secretariat and other members of the Secretariat, Madam Arthur gave an assurance of her commitment to collaborate, innovate and promote teamwork.

I don’t see anyone as a threat, but NPA will come after us, and we’re ready.” Meanwhile, Rocher M.K. Davon of NPA confidently stated: “At NPA, we don’t take things lightly. We’re going to have fun, but we’re always prepared. We train all year.”

The September 2025 event is making its first stop in Ghana after many years of being hosted in South Africa.

As the momentum for the event builds up, Edward Bawa, in a pivotal bilateral meeting with Paul Sinclair, CEO of Africa Oil Week (AOW), discussed the significant opportunities that AOW will bring to Ghana’s upstream sector.

This is significant with Ghana’s newly-formed government that is focused on progressive energy policies and regulatory frameworks, preparing to unveil an exciting roadmap designed to attract investment, drive exploration, and enhance competitiveness in the regional energy landscape.

Speaking at the meeting, Edward Bawa reaffirmed that GNPC will be at the forefront of these efforts, ensuring Ghana emerges as a key player in Africa’s energy transformation.

Speaking on Ghana’s role in this landmark event, Edward Bawa stated; “GNPC will leave no stone unturned to ensure a warm welcome to all NOC CEOs for the 7th APPO NOC CEO Meeting. AOW 2025 will be the premier platform where deals are struck between the global private sector, Pan-African regulators, and National Oil Companies.

“Hosting regional leadership in Ghana at AOW will be an honor, and we fully expect a full turnout of major NOCs and policymakers who will be presenting licensing rounds and open acreage opportunities.”

Adding to the anticipation, Edward Bawa will assume the presidency of the NOC CEO Forum, which will be held on the margins of AOW 2025, in collaboration with the African Petroleum Producers’ Organization (APPO).

This high-profile gathering will convene National Oil Company (NOC) CEOs from across Africa, alongside global investors and regulators, to forge new partnerships and investment strategies.

Parliament Chaos: Sir John urges MPs to set good examples for the youth

0

The First Vice Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for Atwima Nwabiagya South Constituency, John Kwame Duodu, popularly known as Sir John, has strongly condemned the chaotic scenes that unfolded during the vetting of ministerial nominees on Thursday, January 30, 2025.

Sir John, who also serves as the Ashanti Regional TESCON Patron, expressed deep disappointment over the level of discord displayed by lawmakers from both the Majority and Minority sides of the Appointments Committee.

“Such actions set a bad example for the youth and future leaders of the nation, who look up to their elected legislative representatives as role models,” he emphasised.

According to Sir John, the behaviour of MPs directly impacts the youth, and he urged parliamentarians to be mindful of their conduct and live up to the honour of their titles. He also blamed the Chairman of the Appointments Committee for the confusion that ensued, stating that his magnanimity led to the chaos in the chamber.

Sir John further criticised the Majority members of the Appointments Committee, describing their actions as a “deliberate plan to intimidate the Minority members.”

While acknowledging Speaker Alban Bagbin’s justified anger over the incident, Sir John called for a fair and thorough investigation into the matter. He described the suspension of three Minority MPs and only one Majority MP as unfair.

“We all watched it and clearly saw that the MPs on the Majority side who were involved in that distasteful act were many, so why was only the Majority Chief Whip included in the suspension on the Majority side?” Sir John questioned.

Sir John stressed the need for political cooperation in Parliament, stating that the lawmakers must focus on solving national challenges rather than engaging in partisan disputes.

“The actions of our lawmakers should reflect the values of our great nation. We must promote a culture of respect, tolerance, and cooperation in our politics. The youth of our country are watching, and we must set a good example for them,” he added.

He further urged lawmakers to prioritise national interests over personal and party interests, warning that political instability could derail Ghana’s development.

“We need to work together to build a better future for our country. The chaos we saw in Parliament is not what we need. We need peace and stability in the country as well as maximum cooperation at all levels of government,” Sir John concluded.

Vetting chaos was completely unnecessary, needless

0

Chairman of the Appointments Committee, Bernard Ahiafor, has condemned the clash between Minority and Majority MPs on Thursday, January 30, ahead of the vetting of Okudzeto Ablakwa and Kwabena Mintah Akandoh.

Describing the incident as unnecessary and unwarranted, Ahiafor dismissed the expectation that he should have intervened in the dispute.

His comments come after four MPs were suspended on Friday, January 31, following chaotic scenes that led to the destruction of tables and microphones in Parliament.

Speaking on The Point of View on Channel One TV on Monday, February 3, Ahiafor questioned why he should be expected to involve himself in the fracas, emphasizing that such disruptions only undermine parliamentary proceedings.

“Why am I expected by Ghanaians to take part in the fight? I don’t see the need for the fight in the first place, let alone talk about separating.”

Speaker Alban Bagbin on January 31, 2025, following the violent confrontations during the vetting on Thursday, January 30, established a seven-member committee.

Al-Sisi, Mahama reaffirm commitment to Egypt-Ghana cooperation

0

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi and Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama held a telephone conversation to discuss strengthening bilateral relations and cooperation between their two countries. President Al-Sisi congratulated President Mahama on his recent electoral victory and return to office.

The two leaders emphasized the strong historical ties between Egypt and Ghana, and the special place Ghana holds for the Egyptian people.

They also focused on the importance of enhancing economic and trade partnerships. President Sisi noted Egyptian companies’ interest in working in Ghana, given their successful track record and contributions to Ghanaian development projects.

President Mahama expressed his appreciation for the call, affirming the respect and esteem with which Egypt is regarded by the Ghanaian people, and underscoring the long-standing relationship between the two nations.

He welcomed further cooperation with Egypt in various fields and closer coordination on African issues. The call also included congratulations from President Sisi to President Mahama on his recent electoral success.

Security agencies probe ministerial nominees before vetting

0

The First Deputy Speaker of Parliament and Chairman of the Appointments Committee, Bernard Ahiafor, has revealed that security agencies conduct thorough investigations into ministerial nominees before they are vetted.

According to Mr. Ahiafor, nominees found culpable of crimes involving dishonesty or moral turpitude are automatically disqualified from holding office. He added that parliamentary candidates are also subjected to similar background checks.

Speaking in an interview with Bernard Avle on The Point of View on Channel One TV, Mr. Ahiafor emphasized the importance of these investigations in maintaining integrity within government appointments.

“If Hon. Bernard Avle is supposed to be vetted by me, and there’s a report that you have been involved in fraud or an offence involving dishonesty and moral turpitude which disqualifies a person from becoming an MP. Then by that imperative, you are disqualified from becoming an MP and the consequential effects of it is that you’re also disqualified from becoming a minister without even going through the vetting process.

“You write to the security agencies for them to do the background check for you. They investigate before you [Minister or MP] appear. An investigation is conducted and the report is at hand.”

Ontario ends contract with Musk’s Starlink over US tariffs

0

The leader of Ontario – Canada’s most populous province – has said that American companies will be banned from provincial government contracts until the US ends the tariffs President Donald Trump imposed on Canada.

Ontario Premier Doug Ford also emphasised that his government would be “ripping up” its C$100m ($68m; £55.1) contract with Elon Musk’s satellite internet company Starlink.

“Ontario won’t do business with people hell-bent on destroying our economy,” said Ford, who is running in the province snap election he called last week.

Trump and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau spoke on Monday about the 25% import tax on Canadian goods that the US president announced at the weekend.

Trump said in the Oval Office on Monday they had a “good talk” but that he raised a number of issues he saw as trade irritants.

“I’m sure you’re shocked to hear that, but Canada is very tough,” he said.

“They’re very, very tough to do business with, and we can’t let them take advantage of the US.”

The president has given a number of reasons in recent months for threatening tariffs on Canada, from border security to trade deficits and the country’s failure to meet Nato defence spending targets.

The pair are schedule to speak again this afternoon.

The president announced on Saturday that a 25% import tax on goods from Canada and Mexico would begin on Tuesday, along with 10% tariffs on goods from China.

Canadian energy faces a lower 10% tariff.

Trudeau immediately announced counter-tariff plans in response. He said that his government would place C$30bn in tariffs on American goods this week – with an additional C$125bn in 21 days, for a total of C$155bn ($107bn; £86bn) – if the US moves ahead with the levies.

Canada has “no choice but to hit back, and hit back hard”, Ford said at a news conference on Monday.

“Canada didn’t start this fight with the US, but you better believe we’re ready to win it,” the Ontario premier added.

Ford has targeted Starlink in that effort after his Ontario government partnered with the internet firm. The province launched a programme with Starlink last November that would offer high-speed satellite internet access to 15,000 eligible unserved and underserved homes and businesses.

Musk, the CEO of SpaceX – Starlink’s parent company – is one of Trump’s closest allies.

In a post on X, he responded with: “Oh well.”

Ford said he believes the province has “a very good case” should Starlink attempt to challenge the move in court, but he is willing for the province to pay a penalty.

“It’s the principle,” he said.

Other Canadian provinces are taking a similar path.

Officials in Quebec, British Columbia and New Brunswick announced plans to target American booze, removing it from shelves in provincial liquor stores, and said they will revisit provincial contracts for US firms.

On Monday, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum and Trump announced that they had agreed on a one-month delay on tariffs on imports from her country after she promised to send additional Mexican National Guard troops to the border.

A Canadian official told the New York Times that Ottawa is not optimistic it will get a similar reprieve.

The president said tariffs are needed to “protect” Americans from the “major threat of illegal aliens and deadly drugs”, including fentanyl.

His administration alleges that Mexican gangs have fentanyl labs in Canada. Trudeau has said less than 1% of fentanyl entering the US comes from his country.

In December, Canada said it would devote C$1.3bn ($900m; £700m) to a new border plan that included strengthened surveillance.

This month, Canadian premiers will travel to Washington DC to lobby against the tariffs and will attend a meeting of US state governors.

All three major stock exchanges in the US tumbled after they opened on Monday. It was the first official trading since Trump issued his orders raising tariffs on imports from Canada, Mexico and China.

The Member of Parliament for Techiman North, Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare, held a thanksgiving service over the weekend to mark the victory of her party in the 2024 general elections.

At the thanksgiving service of Ofosu-Adjare, who has also been appointed Minister of Trade, Industry, and Agribusiness, by President John Dramani Mahama, one of the chiefs in attendance could not hide his love for the official campaign song of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) for the 2024 Election – Nacee’s ‘kwen kwen.’

He explained that the song was a thorn in the flesh of the opposition, New Patriotic Party, adding that they were so afraid of it.

“I monitored the election very well, and there is this one song that I liked very much. The opposition was very afraid of this song.

“So, come what may, we are going to play this song today,” he said in the Twi dialect.

The chief began singing the song and went ahead to request that it be played at the event.

At the sound of the song, the crowd rushed to the grounds of the event and zoomed into an ecstatic dancing frenzy.

Ghana’s January 2025 Inflation 23.5%

0

Government Statistician Prof. Samuel Kobina Annim addressing the media

Ghana’s consumer inflation has slowed for the first time in five months, registering a year-on-year rate of 23.5% in January 2025, according to data from the Ghana Statistical Service.

This marks a slight decrease from the 23.8% recorded in December, ending a streak of four consecutive months of rising inflation.

Government Statistician Samuel Kobina Annim addressed the press, noting that the decline was primarily driven by a slowdown in non-food inflation.

“Although the rate of inflation has decreased by 0.3 percentage points, the figure of 23.5% remains the second highest in the last nine months,” Mr. Annim stated, adding that food prices continue to rise.

The Food and Non-alcoholic beverages inflation rate recorded a year-on-year inflation rate of 28.3% in January 2025. The Non-Food group recorded a year-on-year inflation rate of 19.2% in January 2025.

At the regional level, the year-on-year inflation rate ranged from 17.1% in the Volta Region to 34.3% in the Upper West Region. Eight regions recorded an inflation rate above the national average of 23.5%.

Inflation on locally produced items was 25.7%, inflation on imported items 18.4%.

I’ve Been Scammed By Papaye Online Service – Celestine Donkor Warns Fans To Be Careful Not To Fall Victim

0

Ghanaian gospel musician Celestine Donkor has revealed that she was scammed by Papaye’s online food service. In a self-recorded video, Celestine shared how she tried to order food for her nieces’ birthday from the Lapaz branch of the popular restaurant. She called a number listed on their website and placed an order, agreeing to pay upon pickup. However, the person on the other end told her to pay upfront for her order to be processed faster. After paying, Celestine realized that the number she sent the payment to wasn’t actually connected to Papaye.

“I called back, and they claimed to be Papaye using the manager’s number, telling me to enter a code to confirm my order. That’s when I realized I’d been scammed,” Celestine explained. She then drove to Papaye Lapaz to report the incident, but when she spoke to the staff, they showed no concern or willingness to help. “Their attitude made it clear that they were involved in the scam,” she said. Celestine also revealed that her mobile money account was blocked due to unusual activity, and airtime was transferred to the scammers, similar to a case involving actress Ahuofe Patricia.

Ahuofe Patricia had also shared her experience of being scammed after ordering food online from the Papaye branch at Frafraha. She received a call from a man asking for a code to confirm her order, and after she refused to share the code, she received multiple messages about airtime transfers and attempts to authorize a GHC300 transaction. Her SIM card was eventually blocked for entering wrong codes. When she informed the Papaye staff about the scam, they acknowledged that other customers had been affected but showed no urgency in assisting her.

Both Celestine Donkor and Ahuofe Patricia have urged the public to be cautious when using Papaye’s online service, as their experiences highlight a worrying pattern of fraudulent activity.

Vetting chaos: Ayariga capable of leading 9th Parliament

0

Member of Parliament for Tolon, Habib Iddrisu, has commended Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga for his leadership in handling the recent vetting chaos.

Speaking on Eyewitness News on Citi FM on Monday, February 3, Iddrisu lauded Ayariga’s ability to navigate the situation, demonstrating his capacity to lead the 9th Parliament.

He noted that Ayariga’s willingness to engage on the matter reflected strong leadership and a commitment to resolving tensions.

“In fact, I must commend the Majority Leader. He has shown leadership; he has exhibited that he is capable of leading us in the 9th Parliament because he reached out, and then they are supposed to meet and discuss this issue so that we will be able to see a way forward,” Iddrisu stated.

He also criticised Speaker Alban Bagbin for overstepping his powers with the suspension of certain Members of Parliament, describing the decision as harsh and lacking constitutional and procedural legitimacy.

“The speaker has outreached his powers; the suspension was too harsh. The speaker doesn’t have that power under the constitution and the standing orders,” Iddrisu said.

Lawsuit against current Commissioner-General of GRA withdrawn

0

The path has been cleared for Anthony Kwasi Sarpong to continue acting as Commissioner-General of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) following the withdrawal of a lawsuit challenging his appointment.

The case, filed by private citizen Emmanuella Sarfowaah, sought to overturn President John Dramani Mahama’s decision to appoint Mr. Sarpong, citing alleged conflicts of interest.

However, legal documents filed at the High Court, confirm that the suit has been wholly discontinued, paving the way for the Commissioner-General to focus on executing his mandate.

Mr. Sarpong was appointed by President John Dramani Mahama on January 21, 2025. His vast experience as a Chartered Accountant and tax expert made him an ideal candidate to lead Ghana’s tax administration, but concerns were raised over his long-standing ties to KPMG, where he served as a Senior Partner.

The plaintiff had argued that his previous role created a conflict of interest, particularly because KPMG has had consulting engagements with the GRA.

However, Mr. Sarpong’s official resignation from KPMG, announced on January 31, 2025 appears to have dealt a blow to the lawsuit, weakening its foundation and prompting its eventual withdrawal. Legal analysts suggest that his resignation eliminated any potential conflict, leaving little room for a meritorious challenge against his appointment.

The GRA staff welcomed the new Acting Commissioner-General upon his appointment by President Mahama and expressed confidence in his ability to revamp the institution and enhance revenue mobilisation. Insiders at the authority say morale is high, as employees see his leadership as an opportunity for modernization and transformation.

Mr. Sarpong is now set to usher GRA into its next phase of revenue generation, aligning with the government’s broader economic strategy.

His leadership is expected to focus on enhancing tax compliance, leveraging technology for efficiency, and strengthening enforcement measures to maximize revenue collection.

Kofi Adams is Minister of Sports and Recreation-designate Kofi Adams is Minister of Sports and Recreation-designate

The Minister of Sports and Recreation-designate, Kofi Adams, has pledged to enhance security at stadiums across the country to ensure the safety of fans, players, and officials.

His commitment comes in response to the tragic death of Asante Kotoko fan, Yaw Frimpong, popularly known as Pooley, who was fatally stabbed during a Ghana Premier League match between Asante Kotoko and Nsoatreman FC at Nsoatre on Sunday, February 2, 2025.

Speaking on JoyNews, Adams strongly condemned the violence, emphasising the negative impact such incidents have on Ghanaian sports, particularly at a time when efforts are being made to rekindle passion for local football.

“You cannot have patience for such an act, especially when we’ve had quite a serious incident in the past, a repeat of any kind should be condemned and not at a time we are trying to bring back the love that we want Ghanaians to have for our sport.

“Acts such as this send us way back and we must not accept it. This is very condemnable. It must not be tolerated and we must not, in any way, find any excuse or soever for what happened yesterday,” he said.

Adams stressed the urgent need for improved security and emergency response measures at stadiums to prevent similar tragedies in the future.

“It is a wake-up call to look at our security at stadia. We will have to review security at stadia and see to improving security at our stadia and also emergency responses. We need to review all these and make sure we bring it to standard,” he added.

In the aftermath of the incident, the Ghana Football Association (GFA) has indefinitely suspended the use of Nana Konamansah Park and taken disciplinary action against both Nsoatreman FC and Asante Kotoko.

Afenyo-Markin’s language too belligerent – Inusah Fuseini

0

Former Tamale Central MP, Inusah Fuseini, has criticised the language used by Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin, calling it overly aggressive and unhelpful.

According to Fuseini, such rhetoric fosters irrational thinking and behavior among Minority members.

His remarks come in the wake of the chaos that erupted during the vetting on January 30, 2025, which led to Speaker Alban Bagbin suspending three Minority MPs and one Majority MP.

Fuseini told Umaru Sanda Amadu in an interview on Eyewitness News on Citi FM on Monday February 3, that “Afenyo-Markin’s language is too belligerent to condition rational thinking and behavior among his members.”

“I will advise that they adopt a lesser belligerent tool. The psychology of emotions is that when your leader is so belligerent, he works his members up, and probably that worked the members up.”

He pointed to the incident involving the clerk of the committee as an example of the consequences of using overly aggressive language.

“You saw before the distraction what happened to the clerk of the committee,” he noted.

Fuseini advised the Minority Leader to adopt a less belligerent approach, suggesting that it is possible to make a strong case without evoking emotions.

“So I would advise the minority leader to be less belligerent. You can make your case as forcefully as you can without evoking emotions,” he added.

Lemonade Braids Hairstyles for Women of All Ages

0

Lemonade braids have become a go-to hairstyle for women of all ages, offering both style and versatility. Popularized by the iconic Beyoncé in her “Lemonade” album, these bold, intricate, and trendy braids are perfect for any occasion, from casual outings to formal events. What makes lemonade braids so appealing is their flexibility in terms of age, hair texture, and personal style. Whether you’re in your teens or a more mature woman, lemonade braids can enhance your look and offer a fresh twist on the classic braided styles.

1. Classic Lemonade Braids

The classic lemonade braid style is achieved by creating side-swept cornrows that are typically styled close to the scalp, curving down to one side. This style is not only chic but also practical, keeping hair out of the face while exuding a cool and confident vibe. For younger women or those who want a bold look, the braids can be accessorized with beads or colored hair extensions. The sleek and sharp finish of these braids adds a polished, edgy element to any outfit.

2. Lemonade Braids with Curly Ends

Lemonade braids don’t have to be uniform all the way through. For a more soft and romantic touch, curly ends can be added to the braids. This style is especially flattering for women of all ages, providing a balance between structured braids and relaxed, voluminous curls. It’s a great option for both a chic day at the office or a fun evening event.

3. Lemonade Braids with Highlights or Ombre

For women seeking to add a bit of flair, lemonade braids with highlights or ombre coloring are a fantastic option. Highlights can bring a touch of vibrancy, whether you prefer subtle blonde streaks, bold neon hues, or soft pastel tones. Ombre braids, with the color gradually changing from dark at the roots to lighter at the tips, add depth and dimension to the style, giving it a trendy, fashionable edge that appeals to women across generations.

4. Half-Up, Half-Down Lemonade Braids

For those who want to combine versatility and beauty, the half-up, half-down lemonade braid style is a fantastic choice. This style involves creating lemonade braids on the top half of the head and leaving the rest of the hair down in waves or curls. It’s a more relaxed version of the classic style, perfect for women who want the benefit of braids without fully committing to a head full of cornrows. It’s suitable for both casual days out and more formal occasions, depending on how the hair is styled.

5. Short Lemonade Braids

Women with short hair can also rock lemonade braids. The size and shape of the cornrows can be adjusted to suit shorter hair lengths, and even shorter lemonade braids can be bold and striking. Short braids framed around the face can highlight facial features while maintaining a fun and trendy look. This is an ideal option for women looking to keep their hair manageable and stylish, especially during the warmer months.

Conclusion

Lemonade braids are a timeless hairstyle that can be adapted to suit women of all ages and hair types. Whether you’re looking for something classic and bold, or a style with soft curls and playful details, lemonade braids are versatile enough to be customized to your personal style. From teenagers to older women, anyone can enjoy the beauty, functionality, and fashion-forward nature of lemonade braids, making them a must-try hairstyle for all.
