0

The Chairperson of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), Kathleen Addy, has appealed to the citizenry to help sustain the prevailing peace in Ghana.

“We want peace in Ghana, because we don’t have anywhere to go,” she said.

Mr Addy made the appeal at community engagement on Preventing and Containing Violent Extremism (PCVE) and issues on regarding with at-risk groups at Titiaka, a farming community in the Kadjebi District of the Oti Region.

The programme was sponsored by the European Union and was being undertaken in 59 Districts in Ghana’s eight Northern Border Regions.

The face-to-face engagement aims at engendering peace, tolerance and participation in the fight against violent extremism.

She said citizens from other countries such Nigeria, Togo, Benin, Burkina Faso, among others preferred coming to Ghana because of the relative peace we are having, so nothing should be done to disturb this peace.

“Let us open our minds and be mindful that the upcoming 2024 Presidential and Parliamentary elections will not divide us,” she said.

Ms Addy said as human beings, misunderstandings were bound to occur, but how they were resolved peacefully mattered most.

She said there was the need to tolerate divergent views and respect others’ rights and legitimate interests.

Mr Robert Kwesi Boame, the Oti Regional Director of the NCCE, called on the participants to report suspicious characters to lawful agencies for prompt action, as threat of terrorists attacking communities was real.

He said terrorist attacks in neighbouring countries such as Burkina Faso, Togo and Nigeria posed a serious threat to Ghana’s peace and security, and it called for security consciousness among the citizenry as the country was not immune to such attacks.

Mr Setriakor Kwesi Gagakuma, the Deputy Oti Regional Director of NCCE asked the participants, especially the youth not to be lured into joining violent extremist groups, as they were the target of terrorist recruiters.

He also advised landlords, opinion leaders and Chiefs to check the background of visitors who came to their communities, as terrorists often camouflaged themselves as visitors and carry out their activities unawares.

Mr Sena Nyabi, the Chief of Titiaka appealed for the reshaping of the roads from Koto-Nkwanta to Titiaka, and the provision of a Teachers’ Bungalow for the Titiaka D/A Primary School.

The participants commended the NCCE for organisating the programme.

Sarkodie’s Songs Don’t Make Sense- Shatta Wale

0

Controversial Ghanaian musician, Shatta Wale has stated that Sarkodie’s rap does not make sense.

Shatta Wale was addressing the issue of comparing him to Sarkodie and Stonebwoy, saying that he dislikes it when Ghanaians compare him to them.

Shatta Wale linked a comparison between him and Stonebwoy and Sarkodie to a comparison between students in primary 4 to those in Junior High School 3, saying that he hates it when he is compared to his juniors; Sarkodie and Stonebwoy.

“And the people you are comparing me to, it is like I dey JHS 3 and you dey compare me to class 4 and it is stupid. Somebody will ask why is Shatta Wale talking like this. Why am I talking like this? Why do you even have to compare Stonebwoy to me, why do you compare Sarkodie to me? I came out 2004 when Sarkodie used to call me and tell me that he wants a producer, I was a star before Sarkodie and Stonebwoy”, Shatta Wale angrily said.

He added that Ghanaians used to compare him to Samini, which to some extent, he had no problem with but Samini is out of the system and as a good musician, he is still in the game releasing hits after hits so Ghanaians have no option but to compare him to his juniors; Stonebwoy and Sarkodie.

“I came out before all those your last champions. Sarkodie and Stonebwoy them be your last champions wey you cath. You, people, take me to compare Samini and others, all of them dey go right now ebi Sarkodie and Stonebwoywey you guys get. Dem bi your last batch, dem bi your last batch you get it.

Talking about Sarkodie, Shatta Wale says his rap does not make any sense.

According to the dancehall musician, he has listened to many songs that relate to the life of an individual, especially a person from the streets.

Comparing Sarkodie’s songs to a song that according to him he chanced on Tiktok, Shatta Wale has said that Sarkodie’s songs do not make any sense.

Shatta Wale is of the view that the rapper focuses more on speaking fast, but the truth is, nobody hears what Sarkodie says in his songs.

He noted that the few songs by the rapper that could be heard by listeners and Ghanaians do not relate to anything.

NDC couldn’t provide 12-hour economy, how can they provide 24-hour economy – Abu Jinapor quizzes

0

The Member of Parliament for Damongo Constituency, and Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Samuel Abu Jinapor has jabbed the National Democratic Congress (NDC), and its presidential candidate, John Dramani Mahama, about their 24-hour economy, describing it as a mere slogan.

He said the NDC and Mr. Mahama, when entrusted with the economy for four years, plunged the country into dumsor, and could not even provide a 12-hour economy.

According to the Minister, this record of the NDC shows that they cannot be trusted with their supposed 24-hour economy.

Speaking at a ceremony in Damongo to acclaim him as the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Parliamentary Candidate for the Damongo Constituency, on Saturday, 17th February, 2024, Mr. Jinapor said the NDC has failed to explain the so-called 24-hour economy to the ordinary Ghanaian, and their record in Government, which was marked by dumsor, is evident that they cannot provide a 24-hour economy.

The NPP, last month, held parliamentary primaries to elect their parliamentary candidates for Constituencies with sitting Members of Parliament.

In the Damongo Constituency, no person contested Mr. Jinapor, who is the incumbent Member of Parliament.

According to the Party’s Constitution, where only person is nominated at the close of nominations, the person is acclaimed as the Parliamentary Candidate.

This is the second time in succession that Mr. Jinapor has gone unopposed in the Damongo Constituency.

The ceremony to acclaim the Minister as the Parliamentary Candidate drew a number of dignitaries to the Constituency, including the General Secretary of the Party, Justin Frimpong Kodua, the Minister for Roads and Highways and Member of Parliament for Bantama, Francis Asenso Boakye, the Minister for Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Stephen Asamoah-Boateng, and the Minister-designate for Information, Fatima Abubakar.

In his address at the ceremony, Mr. Jinapor called on Ghanaians to vote massively for the NPP presidential candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

He said in just two months after his election, Dr. Bawumia has laid down his policies and strategies to take Ghana to the next level when elected as the President of the Republic.

He said Mr. Mahama, on the contrary, has not been able to make any substantive policy proposition to Ghanaians but has rather asked for a period of honeymoon when elected.

According to Mr. Jinapor, even though the NDC has been touting a supposed 24-hour economy, they have failed to explain what this means to Ghanaians.

“When you ask them what 24-hour economy means, they either say Jack Toronto, or something else.”

The Minister said Mr. Mahama, when he became President, plunged the economy into dumsor, and collapsed small and medium-scale businesses.

He asked how someone who could not provide a day economy provide a night economy. “For four years … in the day, tailors could not work, in the day, there was no economy for welders, carpenters, fitters, and thousands and millions of Ghanaians, how then are you going to provide a 24-hour economy,” Mr. Jinapor asked.

The Minister said contemporary development, across the world, revolves around technology, digitisation and digitalisation.

He said, even as Vice President, Dr. Bawumia has championed policies that will bring the much-needed development to Ghanaians, and has proven that when elected as President, he can take Ghana to the next level.

He called on Ghanaians to rally behind the NPP and Dr. Bawumia to continue the progressive policies the Government is implementing.

The NPP Loyal Ladies, a group affiliated with the NPP party, carried out a series of activities on Valentine’s Day.

They distributed over 20,000 pieces of Ghanaian-branded chocolates in universities and hospitals across the country.

At the Kwadaso SDA Hospital in the Ashanti Region, the inmates were elated by the visit and praised the NPP party for their thoughtfulness towards the sick and afflicted during this love season.

Similarly, students on various campuses were filled with joy upon seeing the beautiful women bearing gifts for them.

In the Western Region, the NPP Loyal Ladies made donations to hearing-impaired students in Takoradi.

Susan Amo, the Vice President of the NPP Loyal Ladies, mentioned that the group has been engaging in such activities since 2016.

This year, being the 8th anniversary of the group’s formation, they decided to scale up their efforts.

Comparing Me To Stonebwoy And Sarkodie Is Like Comparing Class 4 Students to JHS 3 Students- Shatta Wale

0

Shatta Wale is not happy with Ghanaians comparing him to his rivals, rapper Sarkodie and dancehall musician, Stonebwoy.

In a self-recorded video sighted by Ghbase.com, Shatta Wale says it is disrespectful and sheer stupidity to compare him to Sarkodie and Stonebwoy.

Shatta Wale has linked a comparison between him and Stonebwoy and Sarkodie to a comparison between students in primary 4 to those in Junior High School 3, saying that he hates it when he is compared to his juniors; Sarkodie and Stonebwoy.

According to the Shatta Movement boss, in 2004 when he already had a hit and was a celebrated Ghanaian musician, Sarkodie, who was a starter was calling him severally to get him a producer, Stonebwoy, on the other hand, had not even figured out what he wanted to become in the future that time.

Ghana implements ECOWAS free roaming initiative with Cote d’Ivoire

0

The Minister for Communications and Digitalisation, Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, announced on Sunday, February 18, 2024, that Ghana has successfully implemented the ECOWAS free roaming initiative in collaboration with Cote d’Ivoire.

The initiative aims to enhance integration and foster international connectivity between the two nations.

Speaking at a press briefing under the theme, ‘Digital Infrastructure to Bridge the Digital Divide,’ Minister Ursula Owusu-Ekuful revealed that the initiative, initially adopted in 2016, faced challenges in its implementation.

However, she disclosed that Ghana and Cote d’Ivoire overcame obstacles and became the first ECOWAS member states to implement the ECOWAS free roaming in June 2023.

The initiative focuses on promoting greater integration among ECOWAS member states and reducing roaming charges within the sub-region. With this development, citizens of both Ghana and Cote d’Ivoire can access the internet without incurring international charges.

Additionally, individuals can make and receive calls while being charged at the local rate of the country they are currently in.

The successful implementation is expected to contribute to improved international connectivity and collaboration within the ECOWAS region.

“Ghana has also taken a bold step to implement the free-roaming initiative which was adopted in 2016 but suffered implementation challenges. In June 2023, we went into a bilateral discussion with Cote d’Ivoire to implement this initiative and the two countries became the first ECOWAS countries to implement the free-roaming initiative to promote greater integration among member states and decrease roaming charges within the sub-region.”

“This simply means that Ghanaian subscribers of any network in Ghana visiting Cote d’Ivoire will receive calls without paying any international roaming charges and will be charged the Cote d’Ivoire local rate when making calls to Ghana while in Cote d’Ivoire and vice versa. Subscribers travelling between both countries also be exempt from international roaming charges.”

Mrs Owusu-Ekuful further explained that Ghana has also signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Togo to implement a similar initiative and hoping for the results by the end of the first quarter of the year [2024]

Additionally, she said, the National Communication Authority has received calls from Benin and Gambia to establish a similar bilateral process.

“Following the successful execution of this agreement between Ghana and Cote d’Ivoire, Ghana has also signed an MoU with Togo to start the process of implementing this service between them by the end of the first quarter of the year. The NCA has also been approached by Benin and Gambia to establish a similar bilateral ECOWAS roaming service. ”

This she said will facilitate trade and interactions between citizens of these countries and give meaning to regional integration.

Nigerians Must Pray Without Ceasing In This Time Of Economic Hardship – SGF, Akume

0

The Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, urged Nigerians not to give up on prayers despite the current economic hardship facing the nation.

Akume disclosed that the present challenges are only temporary and towards a better future for the country as a whole.

Speaking on Sunday at the plenary of Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria in Abuja, Akume pointed out that the current period of lent is a time to seek the face of God for the progress and peace of Nigeria.

He said: “The season of Lent is an apt time to host this critical meeting as it is a period of profound reflection, prayer, fasting, and charitable giving which coincides with a challenging period of economic hardship in our nation.

“We are working to reverse as mentioned above while bold economic reforms have been undertaken by this administration, resulting in short-term hardships, they are borne out of a deep-seated commitment to Nigeria’s long-term prosperity and stability.

“With unwavering dedication, we are striving towards a prosperous, healthy, and globally competitive Nigeria. Given the critical situation, now more than ever before, we must remain steadfast, renewing our faith in God’s provision and protection.

“State Governors Are Shameless” – Seyi Law Defends Tinubu

0

Popular Nigerian comedian, Seyi Law, has accused state governors for doing nothing to assist citizens as the country continues to face economic hardship.

Seyi, in a post via his X page, described the governors as shameless, adding that everything that has to do with governance does not lie at the centre.

He mentioned that the allocations for states have increased and wondered what the governors are doing with the added funds they have received.

Seyi said: “I would rather stay with a Moses through the wilderness to Canaan than eat meats and drink wine in slavery in Egypt at the expense of my children’s future. SEYILAW.

“While a lot of Nigerians kill the optimism of others with hate and urge for immediate gratification, it is sad that our government agencies are not communicating government agendas, efforts, and actions effectively.

“I am not one to judge anyone for their anger towards the government. After all, they were voted to serve the people. I am maybe only privileged to be better informed.

“I know everything doesn’t rest at the centre, and I should be able to make demands from the state government. Your allocations have increased, and to take steps towards a better transportation system not to talk of subsidizing it for your citizens is a mountain you’re finding hard to climb. The state governors are absolutely shameless.

“It is easy for any government at the centre to please the multitude by reverting back to full subsidy on fuel and exchange rates, but I would rather we reset, rebuild, and sustain our future than live on a better now by borrowing our future. I want to see certain people-driven and engaging policies in agriculture, power, and health sectors. I am hopeful.

“I will criticise constructively and condemn unworthy acts. To those still cursing in my mentions, if another election was held tomorrow, I would still vote ASIWAJU BOLA AHMED TINUBU.”

Akufo-Addo pushes for Africa-wide mobile interoperability system at AU Summit

0

President of the Republic of Ghana, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, used his last of the African Union’s (AU’s) annual February summits to launch a passionate appeal to the AU and his colleague heads of state to support the implementation of an Africa-wide mobile telephony interoperability system.

Addressing the 37th Ordinary Session of the Assembly of Heads of State of the African Union (AU), today, Sunday, 18 February 2024, the Ghanaian leader called for the adoption of the 2024 Africa Prosperity Dialogues (APD 2024) Compact Document and, specifically, for the adoption of a continental interoperability network across all member states.

This, he stressed, would give a major boost to Africa’s efforts toward building the world’s largest single market through the implementation of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) by allowing tens of millions of Africans to buy and sell goods and services across borders in their local currencies.

In his address to his fellow leaders at the Nelson Mandela Plenary Hall at the AU head office in Addis Ababa, President Akufo-Addo said Africa’s ambition to establish the world’s largest single market under AfCFTA will be enhanced mightily by the continent’s leaders adopting a “collective, aggressive embrace of the digital economy and its available tools.”

He said, “At the end of last month’s three-day Africa Prosperity Dialogues (APD) 2024, which I was happy to host at the Peduase Presidential Lodge in Aburi, Ghana, the participants signed up to the Peduase Compact, a document I am informed has been widely distributed here at this Summit.

“Allow me to focus on one very transformative and, at the same time, very doable item in the Compact, which if implemented can truly and meaningfully fast-track the inclusive realisation of the AfCFTA. This is the introduction of an Africa-wide mobile telephony interoperability,” President Akufo-Addo said.

“The participants at this year’s Africa Prosperity Dialogues were unanimous in agreeing that enabling interoperability to have a single pan-African payment system is the easiest, quickest, and most effective way to accelerate and deepen the single market project in Africa. It is a low-hanging fruit way of making AfCFTA immediately meaningful to tens of millions of people across Africa”, President Akufo-Addo further stated.

Statistical facts

Adding statistics to back his call, President Akufo-Addo indicated that “figures provided at the Dialogues by the AFDB and backed by the GSM Association indicate that almost half of all Africans have a sim card, 28% are accessing the internet, and we saw a whopping US$832 billion worth of mobile money transactions in sub-Saharan Africa in 2022 alone.”

This $832 billion 2022 figure is estimated to have grown further by at least 30% last year and to grow significantly more if Africans are allowed to use their mobile money wallets to buy and sell across borders.
“Imagine where this [$832bn] figure will be with a common interoperability system working across all member states. Imagine for a moment a world where a market trader in Johannesburg can easily and securely send money to her family in Dakar, without the need for cumbersome currency exchanges or risky cash transfers,” President Akufo-Addo suggested to the assembly of African leaders.

The Ghanaian leader further charged his colleagues to also imagine “a world where consumers can use their mobile phones to seamlessly purchase goods and services across African borders, in their currencies. This is the world that we can build and we must build now with utmost urgency here in Africa.”
He noted that the technology was available to achieve continental interoperability. What was left was the political will; “We have the technology to make it a reality. What is required is the collective political will to make it happen and now.”

Also, interoperability, if implemented across the 55 states in Africa, is expected to do away with or considerably reduce roaming charges across the continent, as is the case throughout the European Union.

APD & APN

The annual Africa Prosperity Dialogues (APD) represents Africa Prosperity Network’s (APN’s) flagship event. It is a three-day retreat set in the eastern hills of Ghana, dedicated to Africa’s business, political, and other institutional leaders to discuss and take actionable decisions on how to implement with urgency Africa’s all-important single market project and as a viable pathway for achieving shared, sustainable prosperity across Africa’s 1.4 billion citizens.

This year’s event took place from 25 to 27 January 2024, at the Peduase Presidential Lodge, Aburi Hills, in the Eastern Region of Ghana. Over one thousand participants made up of presidents, prime ministers, ministers, other high-level government officials from across Africa, thought leaders, chief executive officers, and heads of national and multinational institutions, among others, attended the 3-day retreat.

The Peduase Compact, among other things, also called on all African countries to allow free visa access for Africans travelling to other African states.

“With the governor missing in action for the past 30 days, the state is left directionless and devoid of leadership.”

“There is no government in Imo State in the past 30 days. And we wonder how the State can function without appointees and the governor absconding from his duties for a long period.

”Imo State is being run like someone’s empire. The State is like a vessel without a captain.

“I Don’t Know Who Can Challenge Us In 2027”

0

Nyesom Wike, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), has boasted that he has established a strong political system that will make the 2027 general elections a stroll in the park.

The former governor made this revelation on Sunday, February 18, 2024, at a thanksgiving service in Koroma, Tai Local Government Area, Rivers State, which was hosted by Senator Barinada Mpigi.

Dignitaries such as the Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Martin Amaewhule, Minister of Works, Dave Umahi, and Senate President Godswill Akpabio attended the occasion.

Speaking about his preparedness for the general elections in 2027, Wike stated that the alliance between Rivers State’s two major political parties will ensure success.

“With the forces we have I don’t know of anybody who can challenge us. I can tell you it is like tomorrow is 2027. For me it is still very far, I can’t wait. The two leadership of the party, APC is here, PDP is here; where can you find that leadership unity? Which state? It is only in Rivers that you can find that unity.

“And that is what many people don’t like. When they see people united and working together, they find how to make sure they are divided but since we know, we have refused to be divided.

“This is the only state where the leading party will win for president, the opposition party will take national assembly in election that was done the same time, same minute and same hour. That is uncommon,” the minister said.

Additionally, he asked Nigerians to exercise patience with President Bola Tinubu’s reform initiatives, emphasising that the nation’s problems can’t be solved in a short time frame.

“God in His infinite mercies will continue to give us the strength to work together to support Mr President. Kumawood actress, Nana Ama McBrown has sent a piece of advice to controversial media personality, Adu Safowaa.

The actress is one of the numerous personalities who went to La Palm Royal Beach Hotel in Accra to support Adu Safowaa during the period she was attempting to break the Guinness World Record for the longest speech marathon.

The Kumawood actress during her visit to Adu Safowaa used that as an opportunity to advise the controversial media personality who doubles as a socialite after she had congratulated her for her remarkable feat.

McBrown told Adu Safowaa to change from her old bad ways and become a good person.

According to her, the socialite is now beginning a new life so she should make sure that she does not start a new life with the old bad things she was doing.

“I came here to support you and thank you for doing this. This is a new chapter in your life, so do away with the past and turn a new leaf. If you continue behaving the same way, people will ridicule you,” Nana Ama McBrown advised.

The actress claims it is not everyone who smiles with Adu Safowaa who loves her, saying that numerous people could be her friend but when they get opportunities or when Adu Safowaa needs their help they would not mind her.

“Be careful with the people you surround yourself with, especially those who will deny you opportunities. Now, you have a brand, so I would advise you to protect it,” the actress cum media personality added.

Meanwhile, Adu Safowaa appreciated McBrown’s visit and the pieces of advice as she was seen in the video saying “I have learned a lot from you… I’m grateful for the visit”.

0

In a moment of joy in Damongo, the Savannah Region, the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Samuel Abu Jinapor has been officially acclaimed by the Electoral Commission as the confirmed and approved parliamentary candidate for the Damongo constituency on the ticket of the NPP.

The acclimation took place on Saturday, 17th February 2024.

Referred to as the “Man of Action,” “Man of Development,” and “Man of the People,” Jinapor, in his speech, confidently assured the NPP leadership that his constituency is secured for victory in the upcoming 2024 general elections.

He pledged the support of the NPP constituency towards ensuring Dr Mahamudu Bawumia becomes the President of Ghana in the upcoming elections, emphasizing, “The Savannah Region will be a true battleground for the NPP. Every vote will be contested and every seat will be contested, and with God’s help, all these seats will be secured for the NPP government.”

Urging the General Secretary to convey the positive news that the Savannah Region is firmly in favour of the NPP, he stated, “We will win Damongo for the NPP, and we will secure a significant number of seats for the NPP, with God ensuring this success.”

“Let us unite and back Jinapor, back Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, and back the NPP to win the Savannah Region for the incumbent government,” he emphasized.

The Minister, Jinapor expressed gratitude to all and sundry for their support and love in making him the MP once again.
He also thanked Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia for his support and confidence reposed in him.

The Special Guest of Honour, Justin Frimpong Kodua and NPP General Secretary, urged unity for Damongo’s development and the entire region while commending Jinapor for his eloquence, affability, and industriousness.

He congratulated the MP for earning his position and encouraged him to continue working towards securing victory for the party in the 2024 election.

He extended this advice to all party executives to work hard and together in the interest of the party.

Highlighting the importance of a united front, Kodua emphasized that a unified Savannah can win the region by storm and secure victory in the election, making Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia the President of Ghana.

Taking her turn at the event to address hundreds of New Patriotic Party loyalists and Ghanaians who have been wonderstruck by the transformative works of Samuel A. Jinapor, the Minister for Information designate, Fatimatu Abubakar said the news of Jinapor going unopposed in the NPP parliamentary primaries filled her with little wonder as his impactful works are evidenced in every facet of the lives of the constituents spanning infrastructure, education, sports, employment among others.

Detailing her personal working experience with him, Ms Fatima Abubakar mentioned humility, dedication, vision and selflessness as some key exemplary and commendable virtues of Mr. Jinapor which have been paramount in his rise in the political space.

She espoused that Samuel Jinapor had not reneged on his promises to the people and delivered on each of them.
She cited the construction of astroturf, educational opportunities and massive infrastructure works as evidence of the efforts of Jinapor in the Damongo Constituency and the Savannah Region.

The Minister for Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Stephen Asamoah Boateng said having worked with Jinapor during his tenure as Local Government Minister, he is not surprised by the rapid rise of the MP as he has always distinguished himself as a dedicated and committed man who always looks out for the interest of the people he works with.
He noted that his success at the Ministry could not have been chalked without the incredible works of Jinapor.

On his part, the Savannah Regional Chairman of the NPP, Alhaji Sulemana Iddrisu said the works of Samuel Jinapor in the Damongo Constituency will serve as a platform and rallying point for the NPP to build on the numbers they polled in the region in the 2020 elections.

He warned the opposition National Democratic Congress that the NPP would leverage the achievements of the MP and the government as a whole to chase down every vote and establish the party’s dominance in the region.

Damongo is one of the seven constituencies in the Savannah Region, which has traditionally been held by the opposition National Democratic Congress since 1993.

In 2020, Jinapor contested for the first time against the incumbent MP Adam Mutawakilu, who had been their lawmaker since 2013.

In a turn of events that shocked pundits, Jinapor won the elections for the first time for the New Patriotic Party, with over 54% of the valid votes cast, becoming the first NPP legislator of the area since the inception of the Fourth Republic.

Following his election, President Akufo-Addo appointed him as the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, a position he has held to date.

“We Don’t Even Know What To Charge Emefiele With” — Akpabio

0

Senate President Godswill Akpabio, on Sunday, posited that the sins of Godwin Emefiele, ex-Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), are so numerous that the Federal Government does not know which charges to pin on him.

Akpabio, who spoke during a thanksgiving service organised by Barinada Mpigi, Senator representing Rivers South-East Senatorial District, also blamed the economic hardship sweeping through the land on the policies and actions that “they took.”

Not specifying the “they,” he furthered that the prevailing hunger and economic hardship are consequences of almost 60 years of rot.

He however appealed to Nigerians to be patient, while promising that the current administration will deliver on the promises they “campaigned and danced” around the country for.

His words: “So the kind of debt and the economic mess that we are in… and lots of people do not understand.

“I remember President Obama saying you cannot know Washington until you get to Washington. So by the time we went in to look at the economic situation of the country, it was terrible.

“So you know that the former governor of central bank, we don’t even know what to charge him with.

“Whether to charge him for putting foam on top of a pail, or to charge him for illegal possession of firearms, or to charge him for printing notes without income. I don’t know what we’re going to charge him with.

“But what we know is that yes, there is hunger today because of the kind of policies and actions that they took and we recognise that, and I think every political party should recognise that there is hunger and we’re battling to ensure that Nigerians can sleep with their eyes closed.

“There is insecurity. We’re battling to ensure Nigerians can eat three square meals a day.

“But rest assured that we campaigned for this job, we campaigned and danced around the country. We will not let you down.

“We will get to the bottom of it. All we need is patience. The rot that has happened in Nigeria for so many years, for almost 60 years, cannot be solved in six months. So what we need is patience… patience from all quarters.”

The event, which took place in Koroma, Tai LGA of Rivers, was also attended by Dave Umahi, minister of works; Martin Amaewhule, Speakers of the Rivers House of Assembly and other dignitaries.

Recall Eedris Abdulkareem chastised the ‘Last Last’ crooner for claiming that no one in the Nigerian entertainment industry helped him, calling it stupid talk.

In his words: “You hear somebody like Burna Boy say ‘Nobody helped him in Nigeria’ that’s a stvpid talk.”

Wishing Me Dead Saddening – Eedris Abdulkareem To Burna Boy

0

Nigerian singer, Eedris Abdulkareem has berated his colleague, Burna Boy for “wishing him dead.”

The Dailypost reported earlier that Burna Boy while reacting to yet-to-be-released podcast comments by Abdulkareem, said he does not blame the ‘Jaga Jaga’ crooner but the people who donated money to settle his hospital bills when he underwent a kidney transplant in 2022.

However, reacting via his Instagram page, Abdulkareem said Burna Boy wishing him or any other person dead was “truly saddening and very disappointing. Making fun of my health crisis and blaming people that helped to keep me alive is very shameful.”

The veteran singer said he will release a single soon to address the rift.

“I will reply through the only medium that I have… and that is music; so I will be dropping my heartfelt response via a single aptly named ‘Essay to Burna Boy’ in a fortnight,” he added.

Solemn memorial service in Ghana bids Namibian President Dr Geingob goodbye into eternity

0

By James Amoh Junior, GNA

Accra, Feb. 18, GNA – A solemn memorial service to bid farewell and honour the life and legacy of Dr Hage Gottfried Geingob, the late Namibian President was held at the weekend.

The solemn service, hosted by the Namibia High Commission in Ghana at the Accra International Conference Centre, had dignitaries, including the Diplomatic Corps, politicians, chiefs, Namibian community in Ghana, friends of Namibia, gather en masse to reflect on the enduring legacy of “a champion of African unity and liberation”.

Interspersed with soothing dirges like “When peace like a river” from the Envoy Choir, the service was filled with encouraging reminders of life’s storms, resonating with the late President’s steadfast faith and unwavering commitment to justice and equality, but especially to the liberation struggle of Namibia.

As the mournful notes echoed through the air, heads bowed in reverence – a poignant reminder of the profound impact President Geingob had on the lives of those he served.

Heartfelt tributes poured in from speakers, many of whom described Dr Geingob as “a Pan-Africanist” and each offering their own reflections on the late President’s remarkable achievements and tireless efforts in promoting unity and solidarity among African Nations.

While the diplomats and officials from the public and private sector took turns to share their memories on Dr Geingob’s commitment to democracy and human rights, others alternated to write in a book of condolence in his honour.

Dr Hage G. Geingob died at the age of 82 on Sunday, February 4, 2024, at the Lady Pohamba Hospital in the capital Windhoek with his wife and his children at his side, the acting President Nangolo Mbumba, said in a statement.

Dr Geingob served as the third president of Namibia from 2015 until his death.

Born on August 3, 1941, in the district of Grootfontein, he began his schooling in Otavi in 1948 and attended the Augustineum College where his first political seeds were planted in 1958.

Dr Geingob was Namibia’s first Prime Minister from 1990 to 2002 and served as Prime Minister again from 2012 to 2015.

Namibia High Commissioner to Ghana

Madam Selma Ashipala-Musavyi, flanked by staff of the High Commission, in a tribute said the late President had a remarkable presence with an outstanding ability to connect with everyone he encountered.

She said the late President was humble to a fault, with a big heart and always ready to share and always ready to give what he had.

The High Commissioner extolled him for his immense contributions to Namibia, dedicating his entire life to building the country and leaving a solid legacy.

According to her, the late President’s life was one filled with optimism, and that Namibia had lost a statesman and global leader who was a symbol of unity and resilience as he firmly believed that “Inclusivity spells harmony, exclusivity spells conflict”.

Madam Ashipala-Musavyi said Dr Geingob spoke against hate speech as he believed it was a catalyst for exclusivity and a direct threat to shared values of solidarity and compassion.

For him, the various Ethnic and racial groups of Namibia were mere bricks and mortar for building a solid Namibian house.

She described him as a promoter of gender equality, advocate for youth development across Namibia and Africa, and said the late President promoted education, championed clean energy, promoted sustainable development, and sustained economic growth for the prosperity of Namibians.

Transformative force

Mr Ramses Joseph Cleland, Chief Director, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, who represented the Minister and the Government, recognized President Geingob’s impact on Namibian politics, as it transcended mere governance.

“He was a transformative force whose vision reshaped the very fabric of Namibia’s democratic landscape,” he said in an emotive tribute.

The Chief Director said from his earliest days as a freedom fighter, he selflessly dedicated himself to the cause of liberation, enduring hardship, and danger in the pursuit of a brighter future for his fellow Namibians.

His courage in the face of adversity and his unwavering commitment to the principles of justice and equality inspired a generation and laid the foundation for the democratic Namibia we know today, he said.

Mr Cleland said he dedicated his life to the service of his country, making his journey from a young activist to the highest office in the land – a true embodiment of the resilience and determination of the Namibian people.

That nature, he said, had sustained the strong bond and fruitful relations that had existed between Ghana and Namibia since the two countries established diplomatic relations in 1990.

He assured that with the strong foundations left behind by President Geingob’s sacrifice and service to his country, Ghana would continue to honour his name by affirming solidarity with the Government and People of Namibia.

Ghana is committed to the values shared in strengthening the political, economic and trade, cultural and social cooperation between Ghana and Namibia, the Chief Director added.

“…Let us honour his memory by continuing the work he began, by rededicating ourselves to the principles he stood for – justice, equality, and solidarity. Let us all draw inspiration from his life as global citizens,” Mr Cleland urged.

Champion of democracy

Mr Charles Abani, United Nations Resident Coordinator, described Dr Geingob as a man who has left an indelible footprint on the African continent characterized by his remarkable ability to connect with everyone he met.

“This is a sad moment. A great loss to not just the people of Namibia, but to the people of Africa and the people of the world,” he said.

The Late Dr Hage Geingob, Mr Abani said, was a champion of democracy, inclusive human development, a freedom fighter, and a selfless personality who prioritized the well-being, safety, and unity of Namibia and Africa.

He acknowledged the late President Geingob as a visionary leader who dedicated his life to the liberation and prosperity of his country in a life-long public life dedicated to service.

The UN Resident Coordinator said Dr Geingob was a strong advocate for peace, democracy, human rights, and regional integration – cardinal pillars of the work of the United Nations.

“He was also a valued partner of the United Nations in advancing the Sustainable Development Goals and addressing the many challenges facing the continent,” he said.

Towering and Visionary

Madam Samia Nkrumah, daughter of Ghana’s first President Dr Kwame Nkrumah, in an interview with the Ghana news Agency described Dr Geingob as a visionary who, like her father, projected the African agenda of unity, bilateral trade, and sustainable development.

“He stands tall among many African leaders. He wasn’t only a free fighter and an activist, he helped write the constitution of the Republic of Namibia,” she said.

Madam Nkrumah, also a former lawmaker said, “he was a pan-Africanist, but above all he had special qualities like humility, hard work and sacrifice which we need to be imbibe in our nation-building”.

Influenced by Kwame Nkrumah, she said Dr Geingob was charismatic and selfless leader, and that it behoved on Namibians and African leaders generally to honour his values and ensure that his legacy lives on.

Togbe Afede XIV, the Agbogbomefia of Asogli, in a tribute said the late President Geingob’s leadership was exemplary and lessons from that should be a consolation to all especially Namibians.

Lil Win Must Apologize To Martha Ankomah- Oboy Siki

0

Veteran actor Oboy Siki has urged his embattled colleague, Kwadwo Nkansah, popularly known as LilWin, to extend an apology to Martha Ankomah to resolve their dispute, rather than escalating the matter to the courts.

Oboy Siki emphasized that this is not the first time LilWin’s statements have led him into legal trouble, and he should take this opportunity to learn from past mistakes and seek an amicable resolution.

In an interview with Angle FM, Oboy Siki criticized LilWin’s remarks and urged him to act swiftly by apologizing to Martha Ankomah before the situation worsens.

“LilWin lacks wise counsel in his inner circle, as evidenced by his outrageous statements. He must take immediate steps to rectify the situation before it’s too late. Regardless of whether he feels remorseful or not, he should cease his foolishness and promptly offer an apology to Martha Ankomah,” Oboy Siki stated.

Referring to a previous legal issue LilWin faced involving a politician, Oboy Siki advised LilWin to learn from past experiences and avoid dragging the matter through the courts.

“He has previously been entangled in legal matters and faced consequences for his actions.

Although the case is now before the courts, LilWin should demonstrate humility by reaching out to Martha Ankomah’s family and extending a sincere apology, rather than engaging in a legal battle,” Oboy Siki advised.

LilWin’s recent actions, including posting a video of NDC General Secretary, Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, with the caption “Any idiot can go to court” on his Instagram page following news of Martha’s lawsuit, have drawn widespread criticism from the public.
Last week Martha Ankomah, initiated legal proceedings against Lil Win, over defamatory statements he made about her.

Martha alleged that Lil Win publicly accused her of expressing disdain towards Kumawood actors and criticizing the quality of their storylines, implying that she refused to work with them for this reason.

Additionally, Lil Win criticized Martha for her role as a GTP Ambassador, questioning her credibility and suggesting that she was hypocritical for associating herself with the brand.

According to Oboy it’s in Lil Win’s interest to apologize.

GJA Frees Hawa Koomson From Blackout; Farouk Mahama Still In Darkness

0

Mavis Hawa koomson

The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) has lifted the media blackout on Member of Parliament (MP) for Awutu Senya East, Mavis Hawa Koomson, following a meeting held on Thursday, February 15.

However, the blackout on MP for Yendi, Farouk Aliu Mahama, remains in force.

The decision to revoke the media blackout on Hawa Koomson, who also serves as the Minister of Fisheries and Aqua Culture Development, was made after discussions with the GJA’s media partners. The blackout had initially been imposed in response to the assault on David Kobenna, a morning show host of Cape FM, by suspected thugs wearing branded T-shirts of the MP during the vetting of New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary aspirants in the Central Region on January 4, 2024.

On February 15, 2024, Hawa Koomson fulfilled her promise to engage with the GJA to resolve the issue.

She met with the National Executive of the Association at the Ghana International Press Centre, accompanied by the Minister-designate for Information, Fatimatu Abubakar.

The meeting included the presence of notable figures such as Edwin Arthur, President of the Private Newspapers and Online News Publishers Association of Ghana (PRINPAG), Gloria Hiadzi, Executive Secretary of the Ghana Independent Broadcasters Association (GIBA), Muheeb Saeed, Programme Manager for Freedom of Expression at the Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA), and other media representatives.

Following extensive deliberations, Hawa Koomson expressed her commitment to supporting the GJA in seeking justice for David Kobenna. Fatimatu Abubakar, on behalf of the Minister of Information, expressed willingness to work with the GJA to resolve the matter.

GJA President Albert Kwaabena Dwumfour commended Hawa Koomson for her proactive steps towards finding a resolution and expressed hope that she would fulfill her pledge.

However, the media blackout on Farouk Aliu Mahama, MP for Yendi, remains in place.

The blackout was enforced after allegations that Aliu Mahama had assaulted Mohammed Aminu Alabira, the Northern Regional correspondent of Citi FM/TV, during the NPP parliamentary primaries on January 27, 2024.

The GJA and its media partners are urging all media houses to continue enforcing the blackout on Farouk Aliu Mahama.

Nana Akomea Blasts Fifi Kwetey Over Tribal Comments Against Bawumia

0

Nana Akomea

Nana Akomea, the CEO STC and Spokesman for the Bawumia campaign, has strongly criticized Fifi Kwetey, General Secretary of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), for his recent tribal jab targeting Vice President and flagbearer of ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

Akomea expressed his doubts about the credibility of Kwetey’s comment, which labeled Dr. Bawumia as a disgrace to the North. Although the specific behavior of Dr. Bawumia that led to Kwetey’s remarks remains unclear, Akomea pointed out that this is not the first time as a Northern politician has accused a fellow Northern politician of being a disgrace.

In a video that surfaced recently, Fifi Kwetey can be seen shouting to an audience in Northern Ghana, warning voters in the region not to support Dr. Bawumia due to his alleged “disgraceful” behavior.

However, Akomea argued that Fifi Kwetey should not overlook the similar lamentation made by another NDC politician from the North, Martin Amidu.

Amidu, who held various prominent positions within the NDC, including Deputy Attorney General, Vice Presidential candidate, Attorney General and Minister of Justice, and the first occupant of the Office Of Special Prosecutor, publicly labeled former President John Mahama as a disgrace to the North and northern politicians back in 2015.

Amidu strongly criticized Mahama for his perceived tolerance of corruption, predicting that such behavior would hinder any chance for another Northern politician to become president in the next two to three decades.

Akomea highlighted that Amidu’s criticism of Mahama demonstrates that the NDC itself has had its share of politicians from the North who have been labeled as disgrace. Therefore, for Fifi Kwetey to single out Dr. Bawumia as a disgrace to the North without clear evidence of his alleged behavior seems unjustified to Akomea.

The STC CEO concluded by urging Fifi Kwetey to reconsider his comment and refrain from making divisive tribal remarks against fellow politicians.

Akomea emphasized the need for politicians to promote unity and focus on issues that truly matter to the Ghanaian people, rather than engaging in tribal politics.

Find copy of Nana Akomea’s write up below

NANA AKOMEA ASKS:
“IS BAWUMIA THE DISGRACE TO THE NORTH?”

I have seen a video of Mr Fifi Kwetey, shouting to an audience in the Northern Ghana, that Dr Bawumia was a disgrace to the North, and warned voters in the North not to vote for Dr Bawumia on account of his “disgraceful ” behaviour.

Dr Bawumia’s behaviour that caused Mr Fiifi Kwetey to warn voters in the North against him, is not clear, but l remember another lament about “disgraceful” behaviour against another politician from the North.

This particular lamentation came from another NDC politician, Mr Martin Amidu.

Mr Amidu, unlike Mr Fiifi Kwetey, is actually a politician from the North. Mr Amidu was also a Deputy Attorney General, a vice presidential candidate of the NDC, and Attorney General and Minister of Justice, and also the first occupant of the Office Of Special Prosecutor.

Mr Amidu, in 2015 when John Mahama was president, had cause to describe President Mahama as a “disgrace” to the North and to Northern politicians.

Mr Amidu believed that President Mahama’s tolerance of corruption was so disgraceful that it would be difficult for the country to vote for another Northerner to become president.

In Amidu’s words “…because of his behaviour, for the next 20, 30 years this country will not vote for a Northern President and he is disgracing me as a Northerner; and l don’t like it”.

If Fiifi Kwetey is looking for a politician who has been a “disgrace” to the North, he need not look further than in his party, as testified by a Northern NDC politician.

ECOWAS Commission keeps close-eyes on Senegal presidential elections

0

Macky Sall, President of Senegal

The Commission of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) says it is monitoring the electoral processes of its Member State, Senegal, to ensure that rule of law is adhered to in the country’s presidential election.

The ECOWAS’s action follows some misunderstanding that has characterised the postponement of the presidential election in Senegal by the incumbent President, Macky Sall.

The ECOWAS Commission in a statement dated February 16, 2024, said the Commission takes note of the decision by the Constitutional Council of Senegal on 15 February 2024, relating to the postponement of the presidential election in Senegal.

The Commission also urged all stakeholders in the electoral process to comply with the decision of the Constitutional Council and calls on the competent authorities to set a date for the presidential election in accordance with the decision.

The Commission further called on the political class in Senegal and all stakeholders to show restraint and give priority to inclusive dialogue to preserve the democratic gains of the country, which it described as “model ECOWAS Member State.”

“The ECOWAS Commission continues to monitor the situation and invites all stakeholders to respect the rule of law to ensure a free, inclusive and transparent election,” the statement said.

Mahama Unprepared To Lead In 2025; Bawumia Is — Asenso-Boakye Declares

0

In a recent political gathering hosted by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to acclaim Samuel Abu Jinapor as a parliamentary candidate for Damongo, Francis Asenso-Boakye, Minister for Roads and Highways and Member of Parliament for Bantama, made striking remarks questioning former President John Mahama’s readiness for the presidency, particularly in light of his recent statement about needing a “honeymoon period” if elected in 2025.

Asenso-Boakye, expressed concern over what he perceived as a sign of unpreparedness from Mahama, interpreting the call for a “honeymoon period” as a reluctance to promptly tackle the nation’s challenges upon assuming office. “We cannot entrust our nation to someone who seeks to delay action while leadership is urgently needed,” he emphasized, underscoring the importance of immediate and decisive governance in addressing pressing issues.

In contrast, the Minister for Roads and Highways lauded Vice President Dr. Bawumia, the NPP’s presidential candidate for the upcoming election, endorsing him as a candidate who is poised to hit the ground running and offer bold solutions to the country’s challenges from day one. Asenso-Boakye highlighted Dr. Bawumia’s active engagement in governance and readiness to lead, positioning him as a preferable choice for Ghanaians in the forthcoming election.

During the NPP event, Asenso-Boakye also commended Samuel Abu Jinapor, the incumbent Damongo MP, as a diligent and dedicated young leader committed to advancing the welfare of his constituents. Encouraging voters to throw their support behind Jinapor in the 2024 elections, Asenso-Boakye emphasized the importance of sustaining the region’s development trajectory under capable leadership.

The gathering witnessed speeches from notable NPP figures including Stephen Asamoah Boateng, Minister for Chieftaincy and Culture; Fatimatu Abubakar, Information Minister designate; the party’s General Secretary, Justin Frimpong Koduah, and other dignitaries who echoed the party’s commitment to progress and development.

As the political landscape continues to evolve in Ghana, the contrasting views espoused by political figures like Asenso-Boakye signal an intensifying electoral discourse ahead of the upcoming elections, with leadership preparedness and governance effectiveness emerging as key focal points in shaping the public debate.

New Standing Orders to address Ghana’s dynamic and hybrid parliamentary democracy – Speaker

0

The Rt. Hon, Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, has stated that, the January, 2024 Standing Orders of Parliament offers an opportunity to address the evolving needs of Ghana’s dynamic and hybrid parliamentary democracy.

According the Rt.Hon. Speaker, the processes and procedures in the House is challenged, with time and practice exposing the gaps and deficiencies in the November 2000 Standing Orders.

He further indicated that, the present composition of the House has brought those gaps and deficiencies into sharper focus even though, those deficiencies surfaced as far as the early 2001.

“We must start aligning the conduct of business in the House with the evolving and changing trends and requirements of our Parliament. We need to know how to apply and cope with the January 2024 Standing Orders which has replaced the 2000 Orders. These are some of the reasons we are here today. As we say in Africa, “When the drummers alter their beats, the dancers must adjust their steps” he added.

The Rt.Hon. Speaker made this statement in his opening address at the orientation workshop for Members of Parliament and Procedural Staff on the new Standing Orders in Ho, over the weekend.

He stated that, the attendant composition of the House has brought to the fore several challenges with the old Standing Orders. These led to diverse interpretations of some procedures and practices, constant and acerbic verbal one-upmanship on the floor of the House, increased tensions, near fisticuffs, and eventually, including the pronouncement of the Supreme Court regarding the November 2000 Standing Orders.

The current Standing Orders of Parliament which came into effect on the 2nd of January 2024 assures for effective and efficient performance of Parliament and Parliamentarians.

The Speaker indicated that, the Parliament of Ghana’s Standing Orders are deeply rooted in the 1992 Constitution of the Republic of Ghana and drawing on the Darwinian concept of a “living organism.” It is a dynamic document that continues to evolve and therefore, the metaphorical representation of a “living Constitution” is a testament to its capacity to adapt to society’s ever-changing needs, reflecting the evolution of laws, policies and preferences.

He borrowed the words of Laurent Fabius, the former Prime Minister of France, “The revision of legal documents may not be without imperfections, but at least it won’t be rigid. It will be a necessary step towards building the institution and country we desire.”

He advised Hon. Members of Parliament, to approach their work with diligence and innovation, given the fact that Parliament is confronted with an increasing level of public distrust, which must be tackled through their approach to work. To him “The 2020 general elections presented incontrovertible evidence of this and alerted us to the potential future shifts and turns in our country’s socio-political landscape”.

The Deputy Majority Leader and MP for Effutu, Hon Alexander Kwamina Afenyo-Markin in his remarks on behalf of the Majority Leader indicated that, the only weapon for an MP is the rules book (Standing Orders) and cited himself as example that, when he entered the chamber in 2013 and found himself fumbling, the only saviour was the rules book.

He therefore, advised his colleagues that, the only way to survive and stand on your feet and make meaningful contributions on the floor of the chamber in the midst of all intimidation is to stand firm and indicate that, you are within the rules.

He was therefore of the opinion that his colleagues should not take the rules for granted. “For the outgoing MPs, do not forget about the rules book as you are likely to come back and for those who would be retained, take the rules seriously”. He advised.

The Minority Chief Whip and MP for Adaklu, Hon. Kwame Governs Agbodza congratulated the Rt. Hon. Speaker for spearheading the revision of the Standing Orders and bringing it into operations. He was of the opinion that, the orientation will address members concerns and bring them up to speed on the new provisions and the rationale behind them. He entreated his colleagues to commit their attention to all the facilitators.

In his welcome remarks, the Clerk to Parliament, Mr. Cyril Kwabena Oteng Nsiah, indicated that, since the commencement of the previous Orders, Parliaments have been confronted with contemporary challenges such as the Covid-19 pandemic; institutionalization of mechanisms to promote the Open Parliament Concept; the hung nature of the Eighth Parliament, which is the first of its kind since the inception of the Fourth Republic, presented a number of novel situations and challenges that were not clearly provided for under the previous Standing Orders.

He mentioned some of the practices and procedures that has been introduced in the new Orders which includes the recital of the National Pledge on the first day of Sitting for each week, the conduct of a roll call of Hon. Members of Parliament, at each sitting of the House, at the behest of the Rt. Hon. Speaker.

He added that, Parliamentary Committees have increased from thirty-one (31) to forty-four (44) to emphasise the new focus and direction of the House, as part of efforts to expand and improve parliamentary oversight of activities of state actors.

‘Rebel’ MP Lauds Removal Of Ken Ofori-Atta; Better Late Than Never

0

Andy Appiah-Kubi

The Member of Parliament (MP) for Asante Akim North, Kwame Andy Appiah-Kubi, has expressed his support for the removal of Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

Appiah-Kubi, who was one of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) lawmakers who called for Ofori-Atta’s sacking two years ago, believes that although the removal came late, it is better than never.

Speaking on the Ghana Tonight show on TV3, Appiah-Kubi explained that the impact of Ofori-Atta’s removal would have been much greater if it had occurred at the time they made the call.

He acknowledged that sometimes calls for action are subject to the exigencies of the time, and while the removal has come late, he believes it is a step in the right direction.

Appiah-Kubi also expressed confidence in the newly appointed Finance Minister, Dr. Mohammed Amin Adam, stating that he is likely to hit the ground running due to his familiarity with the ministry as a former Minister of State.

He emphasized that Dr. Adam’s understanding of economics and youthful exuberance would be valuable assets in his new role.

Furthermore, Appiah-Kubi clarified that Dr. Adam would not report to his predecessor if Ofori-Atta assumes the newly created position of Senior Presidential Advisor to President Nana Akufo-Addo on matters relating to the economy. He stated that he has no issue with the creation of the new office as long as the current Finance Minister is not placed under it.

President Nana Akufo-Addo recently relieved several ministers of their portfolios, including Ken Ofori-Atta. Other ministers who have been removed include Kwaku Agyemang Manu, Kwasi Amoako Attah, Dr. Kwaku Afriyie, Lariba Abudu, Dan Botwe, Freda Prempeh, Ibrahim Mohammed Awal and Joseph Makubu.

Some ministers have been reassigned to different ministries.

The Director of Communications at the Presidency, Eugene Arhin, made the announcement regarding the ministerial reshuffle on February 14.

Ministerial reshuffle: Akufo-Addo got the timing right

0

Former Member of Parliament for Ablekuma Central, Ebenezer Nii Narh Nartey, has defended the president’s recent reshuffle, dismissing claims of any mistakes in the decision-making process.

Nartey contends that the president’s appointments and reassignments are strategic and purposeful, emphasizing that the president is acting with foresight and knowledge.

His response comes amid ongoing debate surrounding the cabinet shuffle that took place on February 14, 2024.

While some argue that the president is reshuffling his cabinet to regain public support after losing MPs and neglecting stakeholders, Nartey maintains that there is nothing inherently wrong with the timing of the reshuffle.

He believes that the timing is opportune, especially considering the loss of parliamentary seats by some MPs, which may diminish their influence in their respective constituencies.

During an interview on The Big Issue on Citi TV with Selorm Adonoo on February 17, 2024, Nartey expressed his support for the president’s decisions.

“For me, I think it is the right call, the president knows what he is doing, he believes in the competency of the people that he has reappointed and reassigned them to some of the sectors that he believes they can do much better so for me, I think that is the right time.”

Veteran Ghanaian media personality, Andy Dosty clashed with Shatta Wale’s manager, Sammy Flex over an issue that concerns the Dancehall artiste during an interview on radio.

In the course of the discussion, Sammy Flex raised concern about the decision of Andy Dosty to stop playing Shatta Wale’s songs on his shows, adding that the Hitz FM presenter went to the extreme with the decision.

In reacting to Sammy Flex’s claims, Andy Dosty accused the artiste manager of being unfair in his analysis of the situation, stressing that Sammy knew what triggered the decision to not play Shatta’s song anymore.

Speaking in an interview on Asempa FM monitored by GhanaWeb, this is how the conversation panned out between Andy Dosty and Sammy Flex:

Sammy Flex: I think the impasse between Andy Dosty and Shatta Wale is happening because of the ego involved. Andy claims Shatta takes things to the extreme but I believe he also does the same in this case. How can you say ‘I’ll not play Shatta’s songs or mention his name on the radio?’ If you do that, you’re taking the artiste’s daily bread from him and he wouldn’t be happy.

Andy Dosty: Please hold on a second, I want to clarify something.

Sammy Flex: No, allow me to finish talking then you speak afterwards, stop interjecting.

Andy Dosty: No, if you are making a point, be honest. You are not being fair, Sammy. Your artiste keeps attacking me when I comment about his issue so I decided to stop; what did I do wrong in this case? I stopped playing his songs after he stood on a stage to insult my mother.

The feud between Shatta Wale and Andy Dosty does not seem to have been resolved even though the media personality has indicated he does not begrudge the artiste any longer during an interview with Delay.

Useless reshuffle! – Kumchacha slams Akufo-Addo –

0

The founder and leader of Heaven’s Gate Ministries, Nicholas Osei popularly known as Kumchacha has chastised President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo for the timing of his ministerial reshuffle.

According to him, Akufo-Addo should have reshuffled his ministers long ago instead of waiting for seven years to undertake the exercise.

The pastor stated that finance minister, Ken Ofori-Atta should have been dismissed when some New Patriotic Party (NPP) Members of Parliament (MPs) petitioned him over his abysmal performance in office to salvage the Ghanaian economy.

“Ken Ofori-Atta has an unprecedented record when his own NPP MPs wrote a petition calling for his dismissal. Nana Addo should have heeded the calls of the MPs and sacked him; not now,” he said while speaking on Kingdom FM and monitored by GhanaWeb.

Kumchacha also described the reshuffle as “useless” stating that it would not benefit the country in any way with few months to general elections.

“With the other governments, by a year or two, there will be a reshuffle but during Akufo-Addo’s tenure, it has taken him seven years to do so. In my opinion, the reshuffle is useless because it won’t benefit us in any way. How can you do it with a few months to elections?” he quizzed.

On February 14, 2024, Akufo-Addo reshuffled some of his ministerial appointees following reports of an imminent massive shake-up in the government.

The president, according to a statement issued by the presidency, relieved 13 central and local government ministers of their duties.

Some of the ministers who lost their jobs include the Minister of Finance, Ken Ofori-Atta, and the Minister of Roads and Highways, Kwasi Amoako-Atta.

The other ministers who were sacked are the Minister of Health, Kwaku Agyeman-Manu; and the Minister of Environment, Science, Technology, and Innovation, Dr Kwaku Afriyie.

In all, the president relieved 13 ministers and 10 deputy ministers of their duties, some of which he reassigned.

Celebrities including Nana Aba Anamoah, Rex Omar, Bridget Otoo, OB Amponsah, and Prince David Osei have all reacted to the reshuffle.

When did you become a star? – Film director fights LilWin for ‘defaming’ Martha Ankomah –

0

Popular film director, Sammy Rasta has launched a scathing attack on actor Kwadwo Nkansah, well known as LilWin, for making what he described as despicable comments about actress Martha Ankomah.

He argued that Martha Ankomah did nothing wrong in rejecting a proposal to act in Kumawood because she had to make the right decision to protect her reputation.

Sammy Rasta chided LilWin for what he said were uncouth comments, stating that LilWin is nowhere close to Martha Ankomah when it comes to the movie industry, stressing that he should learn to respect others.

“Martha has not done anything wrong, it’s her choice. Kwadwo Nkansah, Martha Ankomah is your senior in the industry. When I started shooting movies in Kumasi with Martha Ankomah, LilWin was nobody by then. So you cannot call her all kinds of names.

“When did you become a star? Do you know the amount of money GTP pays her? He should apologize to Martha Ankomah and all actresses,” Sammy fumed while speaking on Power FM and monitored by GhanaWeb.

On Wednesday, February 14, 2024, Martha Ankomah filed a defamation lawsuit against fellow actor, LilWin.

According to the actress, LilWin without provocation on February 8, 2024, went on a social media tirade against her for allegedly consistently turning down offers from movie directors to feature in Kumawood – the Twi movie industry.

Martha Ankomah argued that the statements by the actor among other things were lies published with malicious intent. She said it has caused her disaffection and lowered her in the eyes of right-thinking Ghanaians.

While demanding the court to find LilWin guilty of defamation against her person and character, Martha Ankomah through her lawyer, Nii Apatu Plange of Ankoma-Sey, Apatu Plange & Partners, made six demands:

a. Damages in the sum of 5 million Ghana cedis for the defamatory statements made by Defendant.

b. Compensatory damages for the damage done to the reputation of Plaintift.

c. Aggravated damages for the reckless and malicious publication of the defamatory words.

d. An order directing the Defendant to publish an apology and a retraction of the said defamatory words with the same prominence.

e. Injunction restraining the Defendant from further publishing and causing to be published the said or similar words defamatory of Plaintiff.

f. Legal Costs.

What LilWin said about Martha Ankomah

LilWin in a video that went viral slammed Martha Ankomah for declining a movie role. According to him, the actress made unfortunate comments about the Kumasi movie industry before she rejected the role.

Among others, he said “Martha, those who are richer than you are rather humble and respect themselves a lot. Do you honestly call yourself a star? Who knows you? What do you have?

“I don’t even know why GTP bypassed the likes of McBrown, Mercy Asiedu and co, and made Martha Ankomah their brand ambassador. The likes of Van Vicker, Roselyn Ngissah and co, do not do these things. They even work with us. They shoot Kumawood movies. I’m still amazed that you made such statements, were you drunk?”

‘A focused fool’ – Stonebwoy subtly jabs Shatta Wale for ‘attacking’ him on TV? –

0

Ghanaian musician, Stonebwoy appears to have taken a dig at fellow musician, Shatta Wale for attacking his personality during an interview with 3Music TV.

In the interview, Shatta Wale expressed his eagerness to collaborate with Stonebwoy and make a positive impact in the music industry, despite their past feud. However, he lamented that his efforts to mend their once-amicable relationship have proven unsuccessful.

He asserted that Stonebwoy is not as innocent as commonly perceived, questioning why Stonebwoy brought a gun to the 2019 Vodafone Ghana Music Awards event, leading to a fracas that thwarted the ceremony.

“I don’t hate Stonebwoy but he carries generational beef,” Shatta said. “I have called him on countless occasions for us to focus on the proper movement of this industry’s business but he is into something else. Can’t you see the statements he makes? Why do you think he brought a gun to VGMA? So ask yourself what will make someone who is seen as holy and humble do that?”

Following this statement, Stonebwoy took to his social media handle to share a post that appeared to serve as a response to Shatta Wale’s critique of his character.

“A focused fool can accomplish more than a distracted one. The goal is to look back one day and say ‘Dam, all that hard work was really worth it,” he wrote on his social media handle.

Background

The 2019 Vodafone Ghana Music Awards was marked by controversies, one of which escalated to the extent of resulting in a court case.

The confusion started when Stonebwoy was crowned the 2019 Reggae Dancehall Artiste of the Year Award. Shatta Wale and his militants rushed onto the stage when Stonebwoy was about to receive his award.

Afraid of what could happen, Stonebwoy quickly pulled out a gun.

The security officials at the Dome sprayed patrons of the award with pepper spray and the guests at the VIP stand were quickly rushed out.

The show was temporarily put on hold amidst the pandemonium in the Dome resulting in several patrons leaving the auditorium with the onset of the chaos.

Stonebwoy and Shatta Wale have publicly reconciled however, it appears their relationship has not been fully fixed yet.

Dan Botwe to be named Bawumia’s campaign manager

0

Former Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, Dan Botwe, is expected to be named the campaign manager for the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, for the 2024 general elections.

This comes days after President Akufo-Addo named MP for Techiman South Martin Adjei Mensah Korsah as his replacement.

It is unclear if his new position as campaign manager had anything to do with the reshuffle by the President. But sources close to the NPP Flagbearer say the decision was made after broad consultations.

According to Citi News sources, the announcement will be made after National Executive Committee and National Council meetings on Monday where the Vice President will be outdooring his campaign team.

Dr Bawumia is also likely to outdoor his campaign team next week.

The Party’s General Secretary, Mr Justin Koduah Frimpong, on Saturday said the Flagbearer had a clear vision for the nation, hence, he wasted no time in announcing his policy direction just a few months after being elected as the presidential candidate.

“Just look at the NDC Flagbearer former President John Mahama…has he come out with his policy direction after a year of being elected flagbearer?” he asked.

Mr Koduah Frimpong announced this during the acclamation of Mr Samuel Abu Jinapor as the parliamentary candidate of Damongo in the Savannah Region on Saturday.

Liberian singer on Butta My Bread success –

0

JZyNO has done it. His song Butta My Bread is a huge hit – it has been downloaded more than 160 million streams across all platforms and becoming the biggest Afrobeats tune out of Liberia to date.

The song features Ghanaian artist Lasmid, and it was recorded in Ghana, where JZyNO spends much of his time.

“The process of Butta My Bread was crazy. We didn’t see it coming, that was not the song we had in mind to record when we were about to go to the studio, but Lasmid and I just came up with that song,” he tells me.

“I was in a hurry to travel to Liberia so I’m like: ‘Bro, this is it – the song is great, that’s it.’

“I knew the song was a big song in myself, but not that it was going to blow the world, I didn’t see that coming.”

JZyNO has worked hard for this success.

He moved to Ghana first as a student, paying his way through football.

But when that didn’t work out as a career, he found himself spending time with friends on the street who were into rap and hung out around music studios.

“I started having interest because they all used to hail me, like: ‘Bro you’re dope, you’re special.’

“So I was like: ‘Since they’re giving me the courage, let me pay attention to this music thing and start learning about it’.”

He started recording songs using small headphones and a computer. By 2018 he started getting noticed, and returned to Liberia where he had his first hit song Kpan Kpan Me in 2019.

“During coronavirus time there were not many artists that dropped projects, so I think there was space – some holes – that made my song blow in Liberia,” he says modestly.

JZyNO later moved back to Ghana, deciding that the music industry in Liberia did not have the structure he needed to support the next phase of his career.

“It’s been tough out here in Ghana,” he says.

“They have received me as their own – but definitely as a Liberian I have to put in more work. Nobody’s gonna wake up and push you!”

But JZyNO does feel he has someone very big on his side, confessing: “I got inspired by Kendrick Lamar to do music.”

“I’ve had dreams about him five different times already. He gave me the microphone to freestyle at his concert – imagine he was in my city when he did that in my dream!

“So God uses him through dreams to make me what I am right now. That’s funny, but it’s real for me, Kendrick Lamar is a prophet to me.”

I’m disappointed that Osafo-Maafo failed to counsel Akufo-Addo properly – Vim Lady –

0

Outspoken media personality, Afia Pokua popularly known as Vim Lady has expressed her disappointment in Senior Presidential Advisor, Yaw Osafo-Maafo for what she described as a failure to counsel President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo properly.

According to her, she expected Yaw Osafo-Maafo to be counselling Akufo-Addo appropriately when it comes to issues about national development and his public utterances.

During an Instagram live session observed by GhanaWeb, Vim Lady strongly criticized Akufo-Addo for his public statement asserting that he did not initiate developmental projects in Ekumfi due to the constituency’s failure to support the New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary candidate in that region.

“I think the president is not working hard enough because those close to him are not telling him the truth. One of my biggest disappointments is Yaw Osafo-Maafo.

“You are one of the people the president respects, so, you should call him to order when the need be… Why should he tell people [of Ekumfi] that he is not developing their area because they didn’t vote for his candidate? That shouldn’t be the case,” she said.

Background

President Akufo-Addo in January made news headlines following comments he passed when chiefs and leaders of Ekumfi, a community in the Central Region of Ghana, called on him at the presidency.

Akufo-Addo told the chiefs and leaders of Ekumfi that he turned a blind eye to their developmental needs because they voted out the NPP Member of Parliament (MP) for the area during the 2020 general elections.

The president indicated that he was angry at the people of Ekumfi for voting out the then NPP MP, Francis Kingsley Ato Codjoe. He said he made Codjoe the Deputy Minister for Fisheries and Aquaculture Development, all in an attempt for the legislator to be able to help his people only for them to vote him out.

“Ato Cudjoe was your MP and I made him a deputy minister so that he would also help you but it didn’t stay long, you voted him out in the last elections and this is one of the reasons I did not pay attention to development in your area. I have to be honest with you but since you have brought it up, I will pay attention to it,” he said.

Akufo-Addo’s comment was met with vehement criticism by the public chastising him for speaking in that manner as the leader of the country.

The analysis was conducted by the Ghana Health Service (GHS), in partnership with the Ministry of Health (MoH), the World Health Organisation (WHO), the UK-Foreign Commonwealth and Development Office (UK-FCDO), the Mental Health Authority, academia, Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) among other partners.

The report on maternal mental health was disseminated among key stakeholders in Accra last Tuesday.

Maternal mental health refers to the mental well-being of women during pregnancy,  childbirth and the postpartum period and includes depression,  anxiety,  post-traumatic stress disorder and psychosis.

The exercise was to review literature, existing policies and the state of maternal mental healthcare to identify gaps, strengths and make recommendations that would improve mental health and mental healthcare delivery during and after pregnancy.

Stakeholders at the dissemination workshop included the WHO, the Ghana Medical Association, the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association, the Mental Health Authority, academia, scientists among others.

Gaps

Throwing more light on the report, a consultant to the WHO, Dr Promise Sefogah, said even though sufficient evidence existed on the adverse impact of maternal mental health disorders on mothers and infants, coupled with the high prevalence in the country, there was little provision in the healthcare system for its screening, early detection and effective management.

He also mentioned the findings to include inadequate training of healthcare workers on maternal mental health and lack of knowledge on diagnostics, management and referral pathways.

He said the report, therefore, called for an integration of maternal mental health interventions within the health system along the entire value chain at all levels of care delivery and a national policy in that regard.

He also mentioned other recommendations to include high-level advocacy in Parliament, increased government investment in the sector and the inclusion of maternal mental health in the National Health Insurance policy to make it accessible and affordable for all.

The outgoing Minister of Health, Kwaku Agyeman-Manu, said maternal mental health issues could have significant implications for maternal and child health outcomes.

“Untreated maternal depression and anxiety can lead to adverse birth outcomes such as low birth weight and preterm birth and may affect breastfeeding practices and infant bonding.

“This can also lead to long-term consequences for emotional, cognitive and behavioural development of children,” he said.

“To address these challenges holistically and globally, WHO member states adopted and committed to meeting global targets of the Comprehensive Mental Health Action Plan 2013–2030 for improved mental health services to the people,” he explained.

Mr Agyeman-Manu said through the review, the government had made several efforts to ensure the provision of high-quality mental health services to the population.

He said strengthening the mental health system and ensuring that women had access to the support and care they needed during pregnancy and the postpartum period was a collective effort that required all levels of society to provide high-quality sustainable maternal mental health services.

“I wish to assure you that the Ministry of Health will provide the necessary leadership and direction to ensure the full implementation of the recommendations in this report,” he said.

WHO

In a speech read on his behalf, the Country Representative of WHO, Professor Francis Kasolo, said over the past decade, maternal health indices had been the priority of the global community with a focus on maternal mortality to the neglect of other conditions that affect the wellbeing of the mother, particularly her mental health.

Globally, evidence suggests that the prevalence of postpartum depression, anxiety and stress is relatively very high.

“The dissemination of the status report today is the first step in translating policy into action and I want to congratulate the Ministry of Health, the Ghana Health Service, the Mental Health Authority, academia and civil society organisations on your commitment in conducting this assessment.

“The WHO and partners would continue to work with the Ministry of Health and its agencies to ensure that identified strengths and opportunities such as the Network of Practice (NoP) approach are leveraged in developing specific interventions that promote the integration of maternal mental health services into routine perinatal care across various levels of service delivery,” he said.

He said that would ensure improvement in the well-being of pregnant and postpartum women generally, as well as focused intervention targeting those with vulnerabilities such as adolescent girls, women with disabilities and those who have suffered foetal loss.

Neglect

In a speech read on his behalf, the Director-General of the Ghana Health Service, Dr Patrick Kuma-Aboagye, said it was an undeniable fact that the bid to significantly reduce preventable maternal and newborn mortality had diverted attention from the agony and personal sad stories of numerous women and families that go unnoticed even in health facilities.

He said improving the quality of maternal and newborn care as outlined in the Reproductive Maternal, Newborn, Child and Adolescent Health (RMNCAH) strategic plan 2020-2025 would require considerable improvement in the individual experience of women during childbirth, with particular attention to their psychological and social wellbeing.

“It is worth noting that in childbirth in its entirety, the related vulnerabilities place a mental health burden on women, if not supported.

The situational analysis has provided significant insights into the structure gaps in our healthcare setting, the extent of the human resource challenges in mental health and the highly stigmatising environment we live, in our communities.

“Nevertheless, these are the opportunities to craft pathways for more humane and enabling care through promoting family involvement and support during childbirth, which has traditionally characterised our society.

“Improving access to maternal mental health services in a congenial atmosphere, supported by the right skills mix and equitable distribution of healthcare workers with the capacity to deliver comprehensive and integrated maternal mental health services at all levels of care, needs to be prioritised,” he said.

Michael Danso releases new single ‘Me Haw’ –

0

Talented gospel musician, Michael Danso will tomorrow release a new single ‘Me Haw’ (My Problem) which is expected to be a hit on the gospel music scene for 2024.

It will be on all music streaming platforms.

According to the musician, the song seeks to encourage believers and non-believers to remain steadfast, keep strong commitments and not lean on their own understanding in time of difficulties.

He told the Spectator Agoro that the song was a two-stanza ballad that uses explicit metaphorical expressions to narrate true-life experiences he encountered that challenged his faith and resilience.

Recounting his motivation for the single, he explained “it got to a point when I felt my faith in God was challenged on daily basis by a litany of problems. I have endured long-suffering, sleepless nights and lack of peace of mind for a very long time. I came close to the point of developing a heart related disorder out of stress and anxiety.”

The ‘Odo’ hitmaker stated that through it all, he never lost hope in Christ, adding that through those hurdles, the Lord gave him the single ‘Me Haw.’

“As humans as we are, we all have times of trouble and difficulty in life. Even Jesus our mentor and role model had times of great difficulty. But God tells us through several scriptural examples, not to be afraid, in times of challenges but take courage because He is always with us,” he added.

The former Journalist with the Ghanaian Times newspaper, with over 10 years’ experience as a media practitioner, is currently working as a Corporate Communications Officer of the Volta River Authority.

Since launching onto the gospel scene about six years ago, he has been very consistent with new releases like; ‘Thank You’, ‘Nyame Bɛyɛ’ which featured KODA, ‘Aseda’, and ‘He never fails’ featuring Joe Mettle with more under his sleeves.

He is an alumnus of the Ghana Institute of Journalism, a product of Nifa Senior High School and a member of the Ebenezer Methodist Cathedral at Madina, Accra.

Ampratwum-Sarpong retains NPP Parliamentary candidacy in Asante Mampong

0

Kwaku Ampratwum-Sarpong

The Deputy Foreign Affairs Minister and incumbent Member of Parliament for Asante Mampong, Kwaku Ampratwum-Sarpong, has been re-elected as the New Patriotic Party (NPP)s Parliamentary Candidate for the constituency in the December elections.

Ampratwum-Sarpong clinched victory with 555 votes in Saturday’s primary, defeating his closest contender, Dennis Kwakwa, who garnered 167 votes.

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) initially suspended the primary due to internal dissent, but following the dismissal of an injunction filed by some dissatisfied NPP members, the primary took place.

The Court of Appeal, led by Justice Georgina Mensah-Datsa, rejected the injunction, emphasising the potential for reconciliation among members of the same political group.

Unhappy members had sought legal redress since February 2022, primarily over issues relating to polling station executive elections. With the legal obstacle removed, the NPP affirmed the continuation of the process.

Ampratwum-Sarpong faced off against Dennis Kwakwa, a former Communications Officer of the NPP in the Ashanti Region, in the contest.

The NPP urged delegates to maintain decorum throughout the process, as emphasised by Paul Yandoh, the NPP’s Communications Director in the Ashanti Region.

Bawa Mogtari vows thorough investigation, prosecution of Akufo-Addo-Bawumia government’s procurements –

0

The National Democratic Congress (NDC), has promised to investigate and prosecute all the procurements and deals under President Nana Akufo-Addo and Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia‘s government when voted into power.

Joyce Bawah Mogtari, a special aide to the NDC’s flagbearer John Dramani Mahama, made this statement in a post on X, a social media platform, on Sunday, February 18, 2024.

She accused the Akufo-Addo-Bawumia government of being corrupt and using various terms and tactics to conceal what she described as their criminal enterprise.

She said the NDC will not spare anyone who is involved in any shady deal, whether they are related to the president or the vice president.

“Any attempt by this corrupt government led by the corrupt duo of Akufo-Addo and Bawumia should be told boldly that they can’t use nomenclature, semantics or is it digitalisation as a weapon to hide their criminal enterprise.

“Whether it is Abraham Bawumia or Sarah Bawumia they will each be investigated. Each project will be thoroughly investigated, and each procurement examined and prosecuted effectively,” part of the statement read.

Bawa also highlighted several deals that the NDC plans to thoroughly investigate and recover funds from. These include the Agyapa Royalties deal, the Power Distribution Services (PDS) deal, the gold-for-oil deal, and the expenditure related to the African Cup of Nations (AFCON).

“The Agyapa, PDS, gold for oil, AFCON etc cash will be collected. Corruption has found a comfortable existence with Akufo-Addo and Bawumia! Ghana is wide awake,” the statement added.

Ghana is gearing up for upcoming elections in a few months, where citizens will cast their votes to elect a new president and parliamentarians. John Mahama heads the opposition NDC, aspiring to assume power from the NPP. Meanwhile, Bawumia leads the ruling party, aiming to secure another term for his party.

Miracle Twins: Conjoined siblings given days to live beat the odds, flourish

0

Marieme and Ndeye were not expected to survive for more than a few days when they were born.

Now aged seven, they are thought to be the only growing conjoined twins in Europe.

While both girls have their own unique personalities and moods, they rely on each other to survive.

“When you are told from the beginning there is no future, you just live for the present,” said their dad, Ibrahima.

Conjoined twins are rare, representing about one in every 500,000 live births in the UK.

Around half are stillborn, with another third dying within 24 hours of birth.

So seeing Marieme and Ndeye celebrate their seventh birthday with a classful of friends doesn’t just give Ibrahima joy, but also to the doctors who have cared for them.

Ibrahima Ndiaye and his daughters Marieme and Ndeye
Ibrahima kept his daughters Marieme and Ndeye in the UK to stay under the medical supervision of Great Ormond Street Hospital

Marieme and Ndeye share one pair of legs and one pelvis but each has a spinal cord and a heart.

They have round-the-clock care but go to a mainstream school in south Wales with their friends.

“They are fighters and proving everyone wrong,” said Ibrahima.

“My daughters are very different. Marieme is very quiet, an introverted personality, but it’s completely different with Ndeye, she’s very independent.

“I would not pretend it’s easy but it’s a huge privilege. You feel lucky to witness this constant battle for life.”

When the twins were born in Senegal in 2016, their parents had been expecting one baby. Doctors didn’t expect them to live much longer than a few days.

“I was preparing myself to lose them very quickly,” Ibrahima told the BBC’s Inseparable Sisters documentary.

“The only thing we could do is be beside them and not allow them to walk alone through this journey. We saw very clearly early on that we were dealing with warriors, who hang on to life.”

Marieme and Ndeye

Their best chance of survival was believed to be separation.

After calling hospitals around the world “begging” for help, the family arrived in the UK for treatment at Great Ormond Street Hospital in London in 2017.

Ibrahima hoped that the renowned children’s hospital, which had separated more conjoined twins than anywhere in the world, would be able to separate them and that they could go back home to their brothers and sisters in Dakar – but it didn’t work out that way.

Tests found that Marianne’s heart was too weak for the complex surgery.

The medical experts warned the family that, without separation, neither daughter may survive more than a few months.

But, doctors advised, separation would give Ndeye the best chance of survival.

“It was killing one of my children for another, it’s something I can’t do,” Ibrahima said at the time.

“I can’t allow myself to choose who will live and who will die now.”

As their mum returned to Africa to look after their other children, Marieme, Ndeye and Ibrahima remained in the UK for medical care and the three moved to Cardiff.

An uplifting insight into the lives of seven-year-old conjoined twins, who weren’t expected to live more than a few days.

Marieme and Ndeye
Marieme and Ndeye remained in the UK for the medical care that was not available to them at home in Senegal

“Not being able to go back home was very difficult because you had the rest of your family and your job back home,” said Ibrahima, who is the former managing director of a travel organisation in Senegal.

“It’s into the unknown but I didn’t think too much, I just followed my heart. It is my parental responsibility to make sure they will have somebody who will be here for them, that will be my life purpose.”

The twins need regular hospital check ups as they are at serious risk from infection and heart failure.

“At first it was a bit of a novel excitement and then a realisation that this is something I’ve only ever read about in text books,” said Dr Gillian Body, a consultant paediatrician at the University Hospital of Wales.

The girls' organs
Marieme and Ndeye share some major organs and they also have their own separate organs

“They’ve got one pair of legs between them and one pelvis. Moving up through their abdomen we’ve got a lot of different organs. We don’t know exactly, but we know some bits are shared and they have some individual bits.

“They’ve two separate spinal cords with all their nerves yet somehow they completely coordinate and they don’t have to tell each other how to move an arm or how to move a leg, it just works.”

Clothing the twins is challenging.

“You have to buy two identical tops and take them to the alterations shop to join them together,” said Ibrahima.

“They have two legs, so they can have regular trousers, but their hip is very wide so you have to take that to the alternations shop too.”

The family have now integrated into their community in Cardiff and the twins are looked after night and day as carers help dad with respite support.

They are in year three at their local mainstream primary school, where the sisters are helped by two classroom support workers.

Marieme and Ndeye
Marieme and Ndeye weren’t expected to last a few days but have defied medical expectations and grown stronger

“I want them to have a normal life, play and laugh with kids and make friends and develop as individuals,” said Ibrahima.

“They don’t have to hide from anybody and being in mainstream school shows they’re part of society and they are lucky to be part of this community.”

The next challenge for Marieme and Ndeye is to try to stand and walk. They are currently managing about 20 minutes each day with the help of a standing frame.

“They have achieved things that nobody thought they would,” said Ibrahima.

Ibrahima Ndiaye
Ibrahima is grateful for the “dedicated” surgeons, doctors, school staff, classroom support workers and carers that help him look after Marieme and Ndeye

“When you’re told from the beginning there is no future, you live for the present,” he added.

“I know that any time, I can receive a call to say that something bad has happened.

“How long? I don’t want to know. We’re going to make every day a surprise and celebrate life.

“It can be conflicting but you feel lucky despite whatever the difficulties you’re having. They are bringing me such joy. It is a huge blessing to be their dad.”

We should be careful about the passage of anti-gay bill – Ken Agyapong warns –

0

The Member of Parliament (MP) for Assin Central constituency, Kennedy Agyapong has warned his colleague parliamentarians about the passage of the anti-LGBTQ+ bill that is under consideration.

He argued that imprisoning someone for publicly flaunting he is gay is not a prudent idea because it could lead to attacks on such individuals in the society which would be problematic.

Kennedy Agyapong asserted that passing the anti-gay bill into law would supersede what the constitution stipulates concerning gay activities hence, care should be taken.

“About the anti-gay bill, we should be careful. What disgusts me is when someone openly flaunts that he is gay but honestly, that doesn’t mean the person should be jailed. Everyone has individual rights but that doesn’t mean it should supersede the constitution.

“My worry is the moment it is criminalized and someone is sentenced for being gay… On the other side, people would take the law into their own hands and torture or kill such people,” he said in a video shared by One Ghana TV on their Youtube channel and sighted by GhanaWeb.

Kennedy Agyapong asserted that persons who are the promoters of LGBTQ+ activities should be jailed and not those who are noticed to be gay.

“Persons who should be jailed are the promoters, not those who are just flaunting it.”

Background

Parliament on Thursday, February 8, 2024, brought the consideration stage of the Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill to an end.

The controversial private members’ bill seeking to proscribe activities of the LGBTQI+ community has been in Parliament for more than three years now.

The consideration stage which takes care of amendments to the various clauses in the bill started before the house went on break last December.

Addressing the house after bringing the consideration stage to an end, second deputy speaker Andrew Asiamah disclosed the bill could however be taken through another consideration if need be before final passage after the various amendments are captured into the bill by drafters

Addressing the media after proceedings, lead sponsor of the bill and Ningo-Prampram MP, Sam George assured the house will see the process through to its logical conclusion.

Meanwhile, there was confusion earlier in Parliament during the consideration of the anti-gay bill over appropriate punishment for promoters of LGBTQI+ activities.

Economic hardship cause of rising deaths among the youth – NDC Regional Youth Organizer –

0

Richard Etornam Nyarko, the Eastern Regional Youth Organizer of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), has attributed the increasing number of untimely deaths among the youth to the country’s economic decline.

Nyarko pointed out that economic mismanagement has led to high unemployment rates, soaring prices of healthcare services and medicines, and difficulties affording balanced diets, with some youth resorting to eating only once a day in what has become known as “zero-one-zero”.

He emphasized that the economic strain on the youth has become unbearable, resulting in many succumbing to the pressure.

Nyarko expressed his concerns, stating, “In recent times, social media is flooded daily with news of deaths of young people. Young people are dying because of economic pressure. Many are unemployed. Some can’t even afford one square meal a day now they do Zero–one–zero. The youth can’t pay rent. Prices of medicines have hit the roof due to inflation. Akufo Addo and Bawumia have collapsed the economy resulting in all these preventable deaths among the youth.”

These remarks were made during an interview with Starr News after Nyarko addressed NDC supporters after a Unity Walk in the Upper West Anymore constituency.

Richard Nyarko, also known as Commander Bilibo, assured the youth that John Dramani Mahama’s proposed 24-hour economy policy would create more job opportunities and foster economic prosperity.

He criticized the government for neglecting the $48-million Jute Factory at Adeiso, which is situated on a 12-acre land in the Upper West Akyem District and is the largest jute factory in Africa with a monthly capacity of 600,000 sacks. The factory has the potential to employ over 3000 workers.

Nyarko pledged that President John Mahama would ensure the completion and commissioning of the factory to save the millions of dollars spent yearly on importing sacks.

He urged voters to support the NDC parliamentary candidate, Emmanuel Drah, to help the party regain the seat from the NPP.

Shirley Naana Ampem, the Eastern Regional Women’s Organizer, called on women in the country to take a keen interest in the upcoming elections to address issues such as corruption, hardship, and skyrocketing food prices that have disproportionately affected them.

The Member of Parliament for Assin Central constituency and owner of Kencity Media, Kennedy Agyapong has reacted to the shocking demise of his employee, Wofa Kwabena Kwakye.

According to him, the death of Wofa KK, as he was affectionately called, saddens him a lot looking at his work efficacy and how dedicated he had been to his media outlet (Oman FM) in making sure it works effectively.

He stated that it would take a very long time for him to get someone who would be able to provide the kind of services Wofa KK was giving thereby describing him as “irreplaceable.”

“He is always trying to do something new for the company [Kencity Media]. He has been a loyal friend and committed worker, and it is obvious he is not replaceable now. It will take a long time for that to happen,” Mr. Agyapong said in a video shared by One Ghana TV on their YouTube channel sighted by GhanaWeb.

Agyapong went ahead to admonish the bereaved family to remain strong.

“Only God knows the reason why he died so I would encourage the family to stay strong in these trying times. The cue I’ve taken from Kwabena’s death is that you cannot die for everybody.”

NDC Youth Wing procures projectors to play Bawumia’s ‘failed promises’ to Ghanaians –

0

The National Chairman of the Youth Working Committee of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Okai Mintah, has procured projectors to be distributed to every NDC constituency office nationwide.

The main purpose of these projectors is to play back to Ghanaians the unfulfilled promises of Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia.

Bawumia is the 2024 presidential flagbearer of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP).

This, according to Mintah, is to help electorates make informed decisions and also know about the failure of the Akufo-Addo/Bawumia government ahead of the 2024 polls.

The National Youth Organizer of the NDC, George Opare Addo, disclosed this in an interview with Mugabe Maase on Inside Politics on Power FM and TV XYZ.

Opare Addo labelled the flagbearer of the governing NPP, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, as a chronic liar who needs to be exposed to Ghanaians as the country prepares to hold elections later this year.

He said Bawumia, as a running mate of Akufo-Addo in 2016, made a lot of promises to get the votes of Ghanaian electorates but failed woefully in government to fulfil them, and is now trying to run away from those promises, especially in matters affecting the health of the country’s economy.

He stated that one of the NDC’s strategies going into the elections is to remind Ghanaians of how Bawumia pledged to do a lot of things, including stabilising the currency and inflation, but has failed to do so, resulting in untold hardship in the country.

Opare Addo further rubbished a claim by Bawumia in his address at UPSA on 7th February 2024, saying he is the one behind the digitalisation in the country.

“Bawumia claims he started digitalisation, but I am saying today that it is false. NDC, through the Ministry of Communication under Dr. Omane Boamah, undertook many digitalisation projects that brought us to where we are today.

“Ursula Owusu, during her parliamentary vetting in 2017, praised Omane Boamah for the great work he did at the communication ministry, so how come he is claiming he should be credited with Ghana’s digitalisation drive?”

“This is the reason I’m very happy that the National Chairman of the Youth Wing Working Committee, Okai Mintah, has taken this bold step to expose Bawumia big time,” he stated.

Opare Addo said the project has already commenced in the Eastern, Northeast, and Savannah Regions to educate the people about the falsehoods being peddled by Dr. Bawumia.

Akufo-Addo no longer trusts Bawumia’s opinion – Sam George –

0

Ningo Prampram Member of Parliament, Sam Nartey George, is of the view that Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo no longer trusts the judgement of Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

According to him, the president who brought Dr Mahamudu Bawumia into the political space no longer takes Dr Mahamudu Bawumia’s opinion as credible enough.

“Nana Addo no longer takes Bawumia’s opinion as credible enough to even give it a chance to be implemented. Nana Addo no longer trusts the ability and decision-making of Dr Bawumia.

“In the past three weeks, we’ve seen enough reasons to tell the people of Ghana that Dr Bawumia is not the choice for Ghana.

“Why? Because even the sitting president who brought him on because he trusted his abilities has realized that Dr Bawumia’s opinions no longer matter. E-levy, Dr Bawumia, we are being told was opposed to it, but the president went ahead with it.

“If we are to take what Dr Bawumia said in his lecture on bet tax, the president ignored Dr Bawumia; on Emissions tax, the president ignored him. 15% on electricity, the president ignored him and now we are even seeing that the President ignored Dr Bawumia’s opinion on the size of government,” he said.

Sam George was speaking on Newsfile programme on Joynews channel on February 17, 2024.

NPP wants to unleash violence but we’ll stop them – Opare Addo –

0

The National Youth Organizer of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), George Opare Addo, has cautioned the governing NPP not to dare forment trouble during the 2024 elections because they will fiercely resist it.

Reacting to President Akufo-Addo’s ministerial reshuffle on Inside Politics on TV XYZ, the youth leader stated that the people reassigned cannot fix the mess the Akufo-Addo government created in the last seven years.

However, he explained that there was some motive behind the shake-up to get some persons to execute certain tasks through foul means during the December polls to get Akufo-Addo’s vice, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia to continue his legacy.

Asked of the chances of the NDC, Opare Addo said the Akufo-Addo government has lost touch with the people and Ghanaians are willing to boot the NPP out of power through the polls for the mess the NPP government has created that has slapped hardship on the people.

To him, Ghanaians will vote the NDC and John Mahama back to power but the NPP is bent on holding on to power by causing pockets of violence during the polls.

Opare Addo further cautioned the operatives who will be used by the NPP to instigate violence that the NDC is adequately prepared to face them squarely to safeguard the votes of Ghanaians.

“I know the reshuffle was done to achieve that but I am telling you that if they touch one, we will touch four. They should not try because what happened in 2020 will not happen and I can assure you that,” Opare Addo told host Mugabe Maase.

0

Dancehall musician, Shatta Wale has stated that the money he spends on his girlfriend alone every month is more than 20k pounds.

Shatta Wale claims he sometimes chooses to perform at programs, not because of the money involved, but because of his fans because no promoter or event organizer can pay for his services.

The dancehall musician has said that the money that he is being paid for his performances at shows is very small and that if he is to depend on that money, he will not be performing at shows.

Shatta Wale said these after the money he was paid for his performance abroad became a topic of discussion.

Bawumia’s betrayal forced Akufo-Addo’s ‘belated painful reshuffle’ — GFL –

0

The Ghana Federation of Labour (GFL) is deducing that Vice President Alhaji Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia‘s public lecture at the University of Professional Studies, UPSA, during which he allegedly betrayed President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo Addo, forced the president to reluctantly undertake a “belated, painful reshuffle.”

Secretary General of the Federation, Abraham Koomson, noted that Dr. Bawumia’s display of pomposity, betrayal of the ruling government, especially the Economic Management Team, which he described as a toothless bulldog (merely advisory body), and detaching himself from any ills of the government while claiming all the positives; are a stab in the back of the president, who for the past 16 years has mentored him.

Speaking to a section of the media in Tema on the president’s major reshuffle since assuming power in 2017, Koomson described what some say is an ‘injury time’ reshuffle as useless because the economy has been messed up beyond revival under the same policies of the same government.

“It’s obvious that the government has realized the excruciating harm caused to businesses and workers, as observed by the Vice President and his promise to remove these nuisance taxes.

“The government is expected by workers to immediately demonstrate commitment to stop the E Levy; 15 percent ECG VAT must not only be suspended but abolished; pollution and emission taxes; and taxes and levies on local beverage manufactured products must all go immediately,” Koomson noted.

Koomson attributed three major internal NPP politicking and circumstances that forced President Akufo-Addo to undertake the painful action.

“The last straw that broke the old man’s back was the public betrayal from Vice President Bawumia, who, by intent and purpose, said, “Nana Akufo Addo is not a listening President,” as most of his sound economic advice as the head of the Economic Management Team was not heeded to by the president.”

He critiqued that the Vice President’s presentation on February 7 was an attack on the NPP, President Akufo Addo, and the legacy of former President John Agyekum Kufuor.

“Vice President Bawumia looked into the eyes of former President Kufuor and told him that his accomplishment as a driver’s mate has never been achieved before under the Fourth Republic,” stressing that “no president under the current democratic governance has been able to achieve it; this is a total embarrassment of former President Kufuor.”

Koomson also noted that the second issue that contributed to the reshuffle was that the General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Justin Frimpong Kodua, called on ministers, CEOs, and MMDCEs who were fatigued to consider resigning rather than undermining the party’s progress.

“Using the party’s annual Thanksgiving service held at the party headquarters recently to openly rebuke the President, cabinet, and ministers was unfortunate; it portrayed a party in disarray,” he stated.

According to Kodua, appointing new faces is essential to propelling the NPP towards achieving its objectives, stressing that it is time for some changes in the government “so we get some new faces to continue.”

“We believe that if we get new appointments, we will be able to retain power in the next election, and we called on President Akufo-Addo to immediately conduct a reshuffle to bring new faces into his government,” he emphasized.

Koomson described the NPP General Secretary’s comments as a public rebuke:
“To rebuke your father in public shows that the old man has lost respect at home that is within the party, and anyone can just publicly call him to order,” he emphasized.

If you’ll abolish E-Levy, do so now – Akandoh tackles Bawumia –

0

The MP for Juaboso, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has admonished Ghanaians to ignore the new promises of the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, saying he is a dishonest politician who wants to swindle electorates.

He made this assertion while reacting to the new pledges from the vice president to abolish some taxes, which are his creation, when he wins the 2024 elections.

The legislator, who mentioned the economic downturn and a weak currency under Bawumia’s tenure, said the NPP’s new leader lacks credibility which stemmed from his consistent lies to Ghanaians ever since he became the vice president.

Commenting on Bawumia’s pledge to scrap the controversial Electronic Levy, Akandoh stated that the vice president was behind the drafting of the tax and, as such, cannot be trusted to abolish it when he wins power.

While delivering his first major address to the nation after he was elected NPP flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, stated categorically that he would abolish the tax on electronic financial transactions (e-levy) if he wins the 2024 polls.

Dr. Bawumia added that his bid for a Digital and Cashless Ghana will be significantly boosted if e-levy is abolished.

“To move towards a cashless economy, however, we have to encourage the population to use electronic channels of payment. To accomplish this, there will be no taxes on digital payments under my administration. The e-levy will, therefore, be abolished,” he declared.

Dr. Bawumia also announced that as part of a new tax regime by his government, he will abolish the emission tax, tax on betting as well as the proposed 15% VAT on electricity tariffs, if it is in existence by January 2025.

Akandoh who described Dr Bawumia as a pathetic liar, indicated that prior to the drafting of the tax policy in 2022, the Vice President had already declared his opposition to levies on electronic financial transactions in an interview, questioning the rationale behind such moves.

“Before the introduction of E-levy, Bawumia opposed it but when E-Levy was introduced he could not come out to speak on it but went for a party to celebrate the implementation of the tax.”

“What does Bawumia mean when he says he will abolish the E-Levy? If he will do it, what is preventing him from scrapping it now? He does not have the credibility for any Ghanaian to trust him,” Akando posited while listing most of his failed promises, including the crash of Ghana’s economy which he said was doing well under Mahama yet Bawumia criticised its growth,” he added.

He said it is John Mahama who can be trusted to rescue the country from the economic mess that has brought untold hardship to Ghanaians over the past 7 years.

He said the policies of Mahama clearly resonate with the immediate needs and aspirations of Ghanaians, adding that the NDC rejected E-levy from its conception and will abolish it when they return to power.

On his tour of the country recently dubbed ‘Building Ghana Tour’, Mahama touched on some of his job creation and Industrialization policies which was hinged on implementing a 24-hour economy.

He also pledged to establish a Western Industrial Development Enclave, and create well-paying jobs through various initiatives, including completing abandoned projects and establishing factories based on ecological advantages.

The former president also said the next NDC administration will establish factories across the country based on ecological areas’ comparative advantages. For instance, he mentioned Pwalugu tomato factory, the meat factory for Wulugu and Zuarungu, cocoa, cashew, tomato, and other food processing plants.

He also promised to increase government’s share of profit and revenue from natural resources to fund development and reduce tax burdens.

30% of Africa’s sovereign reserves should be invested locally – Akufo-Addo –

0

Ghana’s President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has proposed that 30 per cent of Africa’s sovereign reserves held in foreign banks be invested in the continent’s own financial institutions.

“We should take a decision that a minimum of 30 per cent of the reserves of each one of us, should, in fact, be invested in the multilateral institutions,” he said, citing the African Development Bank (AfDB) and Afreximbank.

Strengthening the capital base of those banks was a necessity in order to enhance their balance sheet and boost their capacity to facilitate more and more resources for the continent’s development and growth, he argued.

President Nana Akufo-Addo was addressing a Presidential Dialogue on the African Union’s (AU) Financial Institutions, on the sidelines of the 37th Ordinary Session of the Assembly of the Heads of State and Government of the AU, in Ethiopia.

He pointed out that virtually all the countries held their reserves in foreign banks, which attracted largely negative rates of interest.

“The fundamental fact is that, if we find a way that we can increase the financial power of our own institutions, we are in a better place to finance our development,” he echoed.

On the relevance of investing in the continent’s financial institutions, he enumerated the critical role the AfDB and Afreximbank played in alleviating the plight of the people in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“These are institutions which are ours, and which we can trust. So, if we can find a way of strengthening them, we strengthen ourselves,” he noted.

Additionally, President Nana Akufo-Addo appealed to African leaders to give a serious consideration to ratifying the decision that had been taken to make the Afreximbank a specialised agency of the AU.

The Presidential Dialogue, convened by Ghana’s President, had in attendance the leadership of the AU, African policy institutes and financial institutions, as well as development partners.

A champion of reforms of the global financial architecture, President Nana Akufo-Addo insisted there ought to be a mechanism for monitoring how monies being invested in the continent’s banks were used.

“This is critical for ensuring that we get proper accountability.”

The President tasked the leaders to work together to develop a robust global financial architecture that placed African development priorities at the centre of common efforts to deal with common burdens.

Reform of the global financial architecture should also prioritise stemming illicit financial flows from Africa.

In recent times, the African Union Heads of State and Government have accelerated moves for the establishment of an African Monetary Union by harmonising monetary zones and creating three AU financial institutions.

These encompass the African Central Bank (ACB), African Monetary Fund (AMF), African Investment Bank (AIB) and the creation of a Pan-African Stock Exchange (PASE).

The concept note underpinning the Presidential Dialogue hinges on the fact that the changing global economic landscape has underlined the need to expedite the establishment of the AU financial institutions, and to revise the legal instruments establishing them.

As Africa seeks to accelerate the transformation journey to enable its countries and people to realise their full economic potential, the authorities say this requires a global financial system that adequately meets the people’s needs and harnesses the opportunities that the continent’s natural and human capital offer.

The 37th Ordinary Session of the AU will also see the launch of the Alliance of African Multilateral Financial Institutions – the Africa Club.

The Club aims to bring member institutions together to find solutions to financing challenges and help support Africa’s sustainable economic development and integration objectives.

Chairman of Jospong Group of Companies grateful to the people of Bolga –

0

The Chairman of the Jospong Group of Companies, Dr. Siaw Agyapong, has expressed gratitude to the people of Bolga.

According to him, Zoomlion gained its roots in Bolgatanga in the Upper East Region; it started there.

He made this known at the just-ended ‘Reshyth’; a 40-day fasting and prayer programme that took place at the Desert Pastures Church, in Bolga.

Desert Pastures is a branch of Fountain Gate Chapel. The founder of the church is Reverend Eswood Anaba.

Desert Pastures is in Bolga and is headed by Reverend Eastwood Anaba.

He went there to testify about the goodness of God.

According to the Chairman, the initiative was revealed to him by God in a vision.

“The Lord granted me the vision to start Zoomlion. While praying, God revealed a beautiful building used for collecting waste. I never understood it,” he said.

He pointed out that somewhere in 2004, he travelled to China to buy some T-shirts in the wake of the pending elections at the time.

“So l had gone to China to buy T. shirts. It was an election year like this. 2004. I had gone to buy T. shirts to print for the parties.”

He further pointed out that while there, he saw a tricycle used for conveying waste.

“While we were in a taxi moving along the streets, l saw a tricycle used in collecting waste on the streets of China,” he recalled.

He stated that at that point, the Holy Spirit drew his attention to the revelation he earlier had, regarding the waste collection building.

He added that propelled him to divert the idea of buying the T-shirts to rather buying some tricycles.

Dr Agyapong indicated that he quickly called the person who lent him the money for the T-shirts to inform him about his decision.

He noted that his creditor vehemently refused, stressing that the money was not meant for that.

“Boss l want to use the money to buy tricycles. He said no. We never
gave you the money for tricycles but for T-shirts.”

He however pointed out that he pleaded with him, and managed to buy a few and returned the rest of the money.

“I had to just beg him and buy a few and bring the money back,” he said.

He said that upon arrival in Ghana, he and his wife prayed over the containers and tricycles.

The Chairman indicated that he went to the Accra Metropolitan Assembly to inform them that he had some tricycles they could use to convey refuse, but they turned down the idea.

“Everywhere l went, everyone rejected me” and that’s when he decided to try the initiative in the northern part of the country.

“So l humbly decided that let me try it from the Northern Region because they are more conversant in riding motors and bicycles, so l moved some.

“When l got to Tamale, l said l don’t know anybody there, so l just moved a few and brought it to Bolga and l started here.”

“This is the region that blessed Zoomlion. It is the region that accepted Zoomlion. It is because of this region that Zoomlion is Zoomlion today,” he stressed.

He recounted that from Bolga, he moved to Kumasi where Otumfuo Osei Tutu II blessed it.

He added that Accra was the last destination where he was granted the opportunity to operate.

He observed that one can attract the blessings of God anywhere.

“Today, l have come here to testify to you that the blessings of the Lord can locate you wherever you are don’t think you have to go to Accra to become a rich person,” he stated.

He prophesied to the congregation that “the Lord who revealed Zoomlion to me and enabled me to evolve to this level, may that same God establish you. You will never lack Your generation will never lack.”

He also donated to the church in appreciation to God.

He noted that the surest way of getting money is by approaching it with faith and confidence.

He therefore charged the members of the church to walk to a car shop and ask for the cost of a car of their choice for a start, a directive, that got the congregation charged up in excitement and jubilation.

“I want you to move to a car shop. Go and ask for the price. Collect the proforma invoice and tell them that you are going to come back.”

The Chairman thanked Reverend Eastwood Anaba and Reverend Mrs Rosemond Anaba for their blessings upon his life and the Jospong family.

He finally thanked the church and declared God’s blessings upon everyone.

The head pastor of the Desert Pastures, Reverend Eastwood Anaba, applauded the Chairman for his initiative.

Reverend Eswood Anaba described Dr. Agyapong as a man who loves God.

He recalled how when he was building his village project, he became concerned about how the place would be permanently maintained.

“When we were building the project, l know this thing is being built and in my lifetime is okay, but sometimes the problem is when you are not on earth again.”

“Will this thing break down and the place be turned into borla?” he quizzed.

He said he did not want it to become a burden to the folks in the village, but a blessing.

He stated that he therefore decided to confide in his friend for his counsel regarding how to maintain the place, and he readily volunteered to help.

Finally, Reverend Eswood Anaba called on everyone who has been ‘blessed by Bolga’ or the Upper East at large, to be a blessing to the land.

“So those of you from Bolga or the Upper East Region have given something small, l want to encourage you to contribute and be a blessing to the land,” he concluded.

I’m disappointed in Osafo-Maafo for not counselling Akufo-Addo properly – Vim Lady –

‘Let’s make nation’s prevailing peace a priority ahead of Election 2024’ – NPP General Secretary

0

By Dennis Peprah, GNA

Goaso (A/R), Feb. 18, GNA – Mr Justin Kodua Frimpong, the General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has advised journalists and media practitioners to make the prevailing peace of the country a priority, ahead of election 2024.

Mr Frimpong emphasised that the media could unmake the nation, and therefore asked practitioners to always sieve their stories and media content in order not to cause tensions, trigger violence and disturb national peace and stability.

He said the NPP cherished media freedom and was ever ready to ensure a violent-free general election, hence the need for the media to remain circumspect in their reportage in order not to create unnecessary tensions in the country.

Mr Frimpong gave the advice when he addressed the Ahafo Media Conference held at Goaso in the Ahafo Region.

A group of media practitioners came together to organise the conference on the theme: “Development of the Ahafo Region: The Role of Media” and attended by 45 journalists and media practitioners in the region.

Mr Frimpong indicated that the NPP was not in any position to do anything that would destabilize the country to derail the government’s achievements.

He said the Party strongly believed that its flagbearer, Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, could lead the Party to political victory in the next general election because of the exceptional performance and achievements of President Nana Addo Dankwa
Akufo-Addo’s government.

“In fact, whatever the majority of the Ghanaian voting population would say or decide, we are ready to accept, when they go to the ballot,” he stressed.

Touching on the theme for the conference, Mr Frimpong, said it was the responsibility of the media to work hard to deepen national peace and social cohesion, saying without peace there was no way the country could develop as anticipated.

He said the NPP valued and had a proven track record of enhancing and safeguarding the rights of the media, saying the repealing of the criminal libel law by the former President, John Agyekum Kufuor’s government attested to the Party’s trait of promoting media freedom.

Mr Kodua said the repeal of the criminal libel law had in one way or the other, contributed immensely towards the growth and development of the media, saying “if you have any appreciation to show, then give it to the former President Kufuor and the successive NPP
administrations.”

Mr George Yaw Boakye, the Ahafo Regional Minister, highlighted some achievements of the Government, saying majority of the road networks in the region had been reshaped while physical infrastructure development especially in health and education had also been improved.

He commended the media in the region for propagating the numerous social and poverty intervention policies and programmes to the masses, and entreated them to use their space to project the economic potentials of the region.

Mr Boakye said the region had numerous economic prospects that could attract both foreign and local investors, and reminded the media it was their collective responsibility to showcase such potentials locally and internationally.

How Kojo Tsikata escaped death sentences twice in his life –

0

Kojo Tsikata, a retired army captain and a close ally of the late former President Jerry John Rawlings, was a controversial and influential figure in Ghana’s politics.

The retired army officer, who died in 2021, was a former head of national security and intelligence under the Provisional National Defence Council (PNDC) regime.

In his life as an army officer, he survived two death sentences, which came about after he was falsely accused of coup attempts and murder.

In an old footage sighted by GhanaWeb, Captain Kojo Tsikata recalled how he had been living in pain from the many allegations that were made against him.

According to him, in most of the allegations, he was not even allowed to defend himself.

“For the past twenty years I have been living under the pain of having this allegation made against me year in and out until today,” he stated.

As a pan-Africanist in the early days of Ghana, Kojo Tsikata was a firm believer in Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah and his ideologies of liberation and a unified Africa.

After completing Achimota College, Tsikata joined the army and as a young officer, he found himself at the frontlines of the United Nations Force in the Congo.

That was a mission charged with securing the independence of the nation.

After achieving this and more in the Congo now the DRC, and also in Angola, he continued to serve there until Kwame Nkrumah was overthrown in 1966 by a joint force operation between the police and the military.

Because he believed in Nkrumah’s ideologies, he fell out with the officers who overthrew the president and stayed in Angola until Ghana returned to civilian rule under K. A. Busia in 1969. Shortly after that, though, another coup took place, led by I. K. Acheampong in 1972.

In 1976, Tsikata, alongside others were arrested and tried for being the masterminds of a failed coup attempt against Acheampong’s government, known as the “One Man One Matchet” coup.

When he was put on trial, Tsikata chose to defend himself without a counsel. In his defence, he pointed out the contradictions in the evidence provided against him.

In the end, he was acquainted but the many others who were with him in the trial were all sentenced to death.

Fast forward to 1982, high court judges, including a pregnant woman, were abducted and brutally murdered.

At the time Kojo Tsikata was serving as the Special Advisor of the PNDC under late JJ Rawlings.

Surprisingly, he found himself in a web of scrutiny for his alleged involvement in the death of the high court judges. Joachim Amartey Quaye, also a member of the PNDC was found to be the mastermind behind the murders.

In an alleged attempt to blackmail the PNDC into saving him from the firing squad, he tried to implicate Captain Tsikata, making it the second time the army man faced a death sentence.

In the trial, the Attorney General decided to exclude Captain Tsikata from the prosecution and eventually Amartey Quaye, together with his accomplices, were prosecuted, convicted and sentenced to death by the firing squad.

Although Tsikata denied his involvement in the death of the judges, some Ghanaians still pointed accusing fingers at him.

In a rare pre-execution interview, President Jerry John Rawlings recorded a confession statement by Joachim Amartey Quaye apologising to Tsikata for implicating him in the murder case and admitting that he had no involvement in it.

“I am also aware that before Amartey died, he confessed at the Chapel of Ursher Fort Prisons, to Rev Damoah and Asaase-Gyimah.

“He told them to come and apologise to me for what he had done against me. Both Fr. Damoah and Asaase-Gyimah told me of Amatey Quay’s apologies shortly after he was executed.

“… I am also aware that where he was executed and died, he also made a confession and asked me to forgive him for what he had done to me.”

Afenyo-Markin urges media scrutiny amid concerns over press freedom impact –

0

Deputy Majority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, is urging increased media scrutiny of the anti-gay bill currently under parliamentary consideration.

Talking to Accra-based Citi FM, the New Patriotic Party MP for Effutu in the Central Region voiced concerns that the bill might inadvertently reintroduce elements of the repealed criminal libel law, affecting journalists and media outlets reporting on LGBTQ+ activities.

Afenyo-Markin cautioned that the bill, if passed, could have implications for press freedom, urging journalists to pay close attention to its provisions.

“I do not think the media has paid due regard to this bill because it is written in ink that if a media house expresses any editorial policy on any issue regarding sexuality, that media house and its members or that media person will be jailed. If you impose custodial sentences, you are setting the country back to where, as a country, we said a journalist who errs must face civil liability instead of criminal consequences”, he said.

“We all have to be very careful and pay due attention to the issue in Parliament…And then also those journalists or media houses who may be writing their editorials or who may be expressing views about it or talking about it. It is not just talking about you promoting it. Just mentioning it in itself is a crime.”

The MP had kicked against custodial sentences for individuals involved in LGBTQ+ activities, emphasizing the inadequate rehabilitation facilities in the country’s prisons. He proposed replacing the minimum two-month imprisonment sentence with a minimum one-month community service for those found guilty.

My reshuffle is for the people of Ghana

0

President Akufo-Addo has explained the motive behind his recent ministerial reshuffle just few months to the end of his last term in office.

Breaking away from his usual practice of maintaining ministers for extended periods, the President initiated a significant overhaul in response to mounting pressure from political parties, civil society groups, and even members of his own party.

This move, announced on Wednesday, February 14, saw approximately 12 current ministers, including 10 cabinet members and two regional ministers, affected by the reshuffle.

Notably, Finance Minister Ken Ofori Atta was also removed from his position after surviving earlier calls for his dismissal.

However, the opposition National Democratic Congress and its Minority Members of Parliament have criticised the decision as belated and lacking inspiration.

Fifi Kwetey, the party’s General Secretary, described the reshuffle as maintaining the status quo rather than delivering the desired change for Ghanaians.

“This action—or rather, inaction—underscores a blatant disregard for the nation’s plea for governance that puts the people’s welfare above political expediency,” he said.

In response to the concerns surrounding his recent ministerial reshuffle, President Nana Akufo-Addo stressed that the decision was made with the best interests of the citizens in mind, rather than to cater to his personal preferences.

Speaking to JoyNews’ Foreign Affairs Correspondent Blessed Sogah in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, the President underscored the importance of prioritizing the welfare of the people in all governmental decisions.

“It is for the people of Ghana, not for me” he added.

While attending the 37th Ordinary Session of the AU Assembly (Heads of State and Government), President Nana Akufo-Addo urged Ghanaians to maintain faith in the country’s democratic journey, particularly as the country prepares to elect the next leader later this year.

Stressing the importance of upholding democratic principles, the President called on citizens to actively participate in the electoral process and exercise their right to vote responsibly.

Why Akufo-Addo didn’t attend Bawumia’s ‘New Chapter’ lecture – Okatakyie Afrifa –

0

Outspoken media personality, Okatakyie Afrifa has shared what he claims are some of the reasons why President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo did not show up at Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s “New Chapter” lecture that was held at the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA).

According to Afrifa, Akufo-Addo is displeased about the prospect of relinquishing control over the New Patriotic Party (NPP). This dissatisfaction, he said, stems from Akufo-Addo’s long-standing leadership since 2008, when he assumed the role of the party’s flagbearer.

In an interview with One Ghana TV, as reported by GhanaWeb, Okatakyie Afrifa asserted that Akufo-Addo did not attend NPP flagbearer Bawumia’s lecture because he had not mentally prepared himself to hand over power as the leader of the country

“He is not too happy with Bawumia. Even in the NPP primaries that were held, Akufo-Addo didn’t want it to take place because he had not psyched himself to hand over power as the leader of the party [NPP] and the country.

“Since 2008, he has had power over the NPP and all of a sudden he is losing the grip in his hands, so, he is not happy. He was furious when some NPP MPs wanted to partner Dr. Bawumia during the elections. It is not a matter of selling Bawumia but the power he [Akufo-Addo] is losing is a problem for him.”

Akufo-Addo and some known members of the party were absent during Bawumia’s first major speech as flagbearer.

The event was held in Accra on February 7, 2024. During his speech, Bawumia claimed that his role in the government is just like that of a “driver’s mate.”

He further promised that if voted into “the driver’s seat,” he would pursue his vision and priorities; hence, Ghanaians should not judge him based on the performance of the current government.

The president has yet to speak on why he could not join Dr. Bawumia during his lecture.

Akufo-Addo doesn’t respect Bawumia

Meanwhile, Okatakyie Afrifa has alleged that Bawumia is not listened to by his superiors in government.

He asserted that Akufo-Addo disregards Dr. Bawumia’s suggestions during government deliberations.

Okatakyie Afrifa claimed that, provoked by the incident, the vice president reached a point where he abstained from attending meetings organized by the finance minister, Ken Ofori-Atta.

“When Bawumia makes a suggestion, Akufo-Addo does not listen, take it from me. It even got to a point where the finance minister scheduled for a meeting but he was not attending. They don’t respect him at all,” he said on the same channel.

The day in 2021 when Joe Wise saved Hawa Koomson from embarrassment –

0

One thing that was evident during the vetting of the minister-designate for Fisheries and Aquaculture Development, Mavis Hawa Koomson, was that she either had a pedestrian “I will consult” response, or, that she could not hear most of the questions she was asked in the Chamber of Parliament.

For most of the questions she provided answers to, many of which did not show her depth in the knowledge of the sector she is likely to head soon, she had unusually short answers to those questions.

Call it embarrassing or disappointing and you would not be entirely mistaken but that is how, for instance, the Chairperson for the Appointments Committee, Joseph Osei Owusu, saved the day, literally, when she was asked one of such straight-forward questions.

Member of Parliament for Odododiodio, Edwin Nii Lante Vanderpuye, had asked the nominee what the three major sectors of the fisheries industry were and after another attempt, the nominee claimed she could not either hear the question or, did not understand the question.

From what clearly appeared to be turning into a no-knowledge of what was being asked of her, the Chairperson of the Committee, and as he has become known to do in many cases during the vetting sessions, stepped in, trying to break down the question to her.

In that attempt, Joseph Osei-Owusu led a response to the question that was not directed at him, prompting the nominee on what she was expected to answer to.

It was at this point that the question became clearer to the former Minister for Special Development Initiatives and she interjected with the claim that she only said that she did not properly understand the question asked by her colleague MP in the House.

Truly, there was a ‘big brother’ there to save the infamous Mavis Hawa Koomson from further embarrassment, or simply, a great moment of disgrace.

Read how it all transpired below:

Nii Lante: “What are the three main sub-sectors within the fishing industry in Ghana?”

(Clearly unsure of what the question was about, the nominee gestures with her face as Chairperson, Joseph Osei-Owusu, tries to rephrase the question for her.)

Hawa: Thank you I don’t understand the question very well so it will be very difficult for me to answer it.

Osei-Owusu: Honourable Member, can you break it down for her, please?

Nii Lante: (giggling) Unfortunately for me, I don’t know how to rephrase this question because it’s a very straight-forward question.

Osei-Owusu: Very well, the sub-sectors. If you take the whole fishing industry, which sectors are identifiable. So, whether the Marine sub-sector…

(Nii Lante cuts in as the House erupts into giggles)

Nii Lante: Oh, Mr. Chairman, that’s not fair.

Osei-Owusu: I am sorry. What are the three sub-sectors you can find…

(Now finding her voice, Hawa comes in)

Hawa: Mr. Chairman, I said I didn’t understand the question. I wanted to be sure of what he was talking about.

Bawumia to announce campaign team next week

0

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) Flagbearer, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, will outdoor his campaign team next week.

He was hopeful that the free and fair internal party elections would yield fruitful results in the December 7 polls.

Mr Koduah Frimpong called for unity among the rank and file of the party to ensure a resounding victory in December, saying; “A divided front can never win an election”.

The acclamation ceremony also saw the launch of the Damongo Constituency and the Savannah Region campaigns of the Party for the 2024 Election.

Mr Jinapor, the Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, for the past four years, has impacted his constituents with infrastructure projects and social interventions to alleviate poverty among his people.

For instance, he facilitated the construction of an astroturf, a community centre, a 15-kilometre asphalt road, and 15 community boreholes and provided educational materials to the pupils.

The MP also paid the tuition fees of 300 students from the constituency enrolled in some tertiary institutions across the country, while providing financial and technical support to women groups engaged in small and medium-scale enterprises to expand their businesses.

The parliamentary candidate of the NPP called for unity among the party’s rank and file and said with unity and tenacity of purpose, they could retain the seat with a bigger margin on December 7.

Mr Jinapor, in his acceptance speech, said Dr Bawumia had a vision for the nation that aligned with the fourth Industrial Revolution – ICT and digitisation – which the world’s economy was gearing towards.

He criticized the NDC Flagbearer for failure to resolve the power outages during his presidency and asked how far the much-touted “24-hour economy” policy could go in support of Ghanaians.

Politicians Don’t Spend Our Money, Blame Ghanaians For The Hardship In Ghana- Shatta Wale

0

Dancehall musician,Charles Nii Armah Mensah widely known in showbiz circles as Shatta Wale says that politicians should not be blamed for the hardship in Ghana but the “Lazy” citizens in the country.

Shatta Wale claims that anytime he sees politicians receiving shots for Ghana’s hardship, he laughs uncontrollably.

Speaking in an interview on 3Music TV monitored by Ghbase.com, the dancehall enigma has attributed the hardship in Ghana to the fact that the youth in the country are very lazy and never willing to do anything meaningful.

Shatta Wale believes that politicians are doing everything possible to make Ghana a better place but the youth are so lazy that they refuse to grab available job opportunities.

The dancehall musician revealed that there are many job opportunities in the country, but the youth ignore because they are all after white collar- jobs which are scarce.

“Sometimes, when we blame the politicians, I laugh. Politicians are doing everything they can to work as politicians. It’s just that when you’re lazy in your mind and you don’t know how to take advantage of opportunities yourself, you will always be talking about politicians,” he stated.

According to the “Freedom” hitmaker, politicians in Ghana do not use the country’s money for their gluttony, they invest in developmental projects, especially in the rural areas.

“Politicians are like cartels with how they run things. It’s not that they’re disrespecting the people; they promise, and you vote for them. But when they go to the white man and take money from them, the white man thinks that they will use it to provide jobs for the youth. They don’t know that the politician will take that money and give it to cheap labour, those from the rural areas”, he added.

Shatta Wale thinks politicians in the country “know that those who went to tertiary institutions will not apply. Our politicians have realized that the youth want flashy things and to wear suits. They don’t want to go into construction. But there’s a lot of money in construction”.

Wishing me or any other person dead is truly saddening and very disappointing.
Making fun of my health crisis and blaming people who helped to keep me alive is very shameful.
Threatening my life is a different ball game, but for you to play God? That’s the most nauseating foul prank of all time.

Now, conscientious Nigerians and the general public are weighing into the matter and you instantly deleted your demonic prayers for me.

Independent Body Should Check, Probe Complaints Against Police — Ogun CP

0

Ogun State Commissioner of Police, Abiodun Alamutu, has advocated for the creation of an independent body to probe complaints against police officers.

Alamutu said this at a weekend lecture at the 26th Annual Convention of the Alumni Association of the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta.

The convention’s theme, “Insecurity in Nigeria: The Mistrust between Police and Citizenry,” assesed the importance of addressing the strained relationship.

He however emphasized the necessity for systemic, institutional, and legislative reforms to foster improved police-citizen relations, promoting accountability and transparency within the police force.

“Strong mechanisms should be put in place for holding police accountable for their actions including thorough and impartial investigations into allegations of misconduct.

“There should also be an establishment of an independent body to monitor and investigate complaints which will further help to pacify the ill feelings of the citizens toward the police.

“Furthermore, transparency in police operations should be promoted and this can be achieved through publishing of crime statistics and making information on police procedures public,” he said.

Corruption, human rights abuses, inadequate training and professionalism among others, he noted, are factors contributing to the mistrust between the Nigerian police and the people

Addressing the mistrust between the police and the citizenry, the police chief added, is crucial for combating insecurity and creating a safe environment for everyone.

He noted that rebuilding trust would require a multifaceted approach which encompasses community policing, accountability, human rights training, public awareness campaigns, adequate funding, among others.

Idris Elba in Ghana for talks with BoG Governor on supporting creative arts industry –

An eight-member delegation from the Stellar Development Foundation (SDF), led by Hollywood actor, Dr. Idris Elba, and the SDF CEO, Denelle Dixon, paid a courtesy call on Dr. Ernest Addison, Governor of Bank of Ghana, on Thursday, 16th February 2024.

The non-profit organization, whose objective is to use blockchain to unlock the world’s economic potential by making money more fluid, markets more open, and people more empowered, presented a blockchain-based fintech innovation designed to guarantee fair compensation for participants in the local creative industry, whose works are commercialized globally, and to enhance access to financing for their works (especially for upcoming creators/artists) through smart contracts.

This will address the current challenge of most industry players in Africa being locked out of the global payments ecosystem, leading to gross violations of their Intellectual Properties(IPs) and copyrights, inability to access funding opportunities for growth or worse still realise funds that are legitimately earned via commercial use of their works around the world.

The discussion also focused on how both parties could explore piloting technology and policy innovation to enhance the IPs and copyright administration for the benefit of local content creators.

According to the delegation, their selection of Ghana as a potential pilot country for this innovation was on account of the Bank’s advancement in the area of central bank digital currency (the eCedi) and tokenization more broadly.

Bank of Ghana and the Stellar Development Foundation both expressed their commitment to collaborate on this initiative for the long-term benefit of the creative industry, particularly the youth.

Guinness Record Sing-a-thon attempter, Afua Asantewaa, has come under intense backlash from Ghanaians over a comment she passed on microblogging platform, X, formerly known as Twitter.

In a recent post on X, Afua Asantewaa spoke about how some internet users use low budgeted internet data to perpetuate hate online, yet beg their abusers for help when they meet them in real life.

She described such acts as ridiculous as such online bullies can be easily trapped.

She wrote, “Too many people expose their ignorance on social media. They comment anyhow with 1gh data and DM [direct message] or meet you in person begging for money or job. Luck [lack] of knowledge, many shall perish. They don’t know their contact or email used to register their ghost can easily be tracked.”

Her comments, however, did not sit well with many internet users who swiftly advised her to focus on getting her world record attempt accepted and verified by Guinness World Records.

Others also reminded her of how internet users used the same 1gh data to support her when she attempted her Guinness Record Sing-a-thon.

A user said, “Madam be calming down okay it’s not the time to be throwing shade… 1gh can’t even buy airtime anymore okay, just keep mute or we will always come here to observe and comment our frustration. Gadam you okay!”

Ablakwa for future president triggers exchanges on X –

0

Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, the Member of Parliament for North Tongu, has become the subject of political exchange on social media platform X (formerly known as Twitter.)

Ablakwa has, in recent times, scored praise across the political divide following his efforts to raise funds to resettle his constituents affected by the spillage of two dams in the Volta Region.

While Ablakwa is focused on the National Democratic Congress (NDC) campaign for former president John Dramani Mahama to return to office, an X user asked that Ablakwa be considered a serious candidate for president in the future.

“Okudzeto Ablakwa has to be considered a serious candidate for president someday. Also, he shouldn’t wait too long to run because the applause may quieten sooner than you’d expect,” the X user by the name of @readjerome stated.

His view courted reactions, among others, that by his service to his people, he could make a strong case to lead the nation.

Others flatly opposed it, claiming that Ablakwa was no different from other politicians.

Ablakwa served as spokesperson to Mahama’s running mate in the 2020 general elections, Prof Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang.

He is currently ranked one of the most efficient MPs due to his anti-corruption crusades and support for his constituents at different levels.

Oboy Siki has slapped sense into the actor, saying that he should stop being foolish and arrogant and go and render an unqualified apology to the actress before it is too late.

Oboy Siki has said that Lilwin’s behavior towards the actress is so uncouth, saying that even bigger celebrities than Lilwin cannot even tell the actress that.

According to Oboy Siki, Lilwin lacks manners and does not know how to talk very well, the reason why he insulted the actress anyhow.

He also attributed Lilwin’s uncouth behavior to the fact that the actor does not have sensible people around him because if there people around him were so sensible, they will not allow the actor to insult Martha Ankomah.

You Are Very Stupid And Senseless, Who Even Knows You?- Lilwin Attacks Martha Ankomah

Angry Kumawood actor cum musician, Kwadwo Nkansah famed Lilwin has attacked actress Martha Ankomah over a recent comment the Ghallywood actress made about Kumawood.

In a viral video sighted by Ghbase.com, the now movie producer is seen using unprintable words on the Ghallywood actress.

He also dropped some dirty secrets about the actress.

Lilwin has said that the Ghallywood actress has disrespected Kumawood actors and actresses, the reason he has launched a scathing attack on her.

According to Lilwin, one of Kumawood’s directors, Frank Fiifi Garbing once contacted the actress to be featured in his upcoming movie but the actress rejected it with no tangible reason.

Lilwin revealed that the actress rejected the gig with claims that Kumawood people do not shoot any sensible movies so she vowed never to go to Kumasi to shoot a movie.

The actress, according to Lilwin says apart from the fact that Kumawood does not shoot sensible movies and their storylines being one way, she dislikes everything about Kumawood.

In his reply, Lilwin said that Kumawood, which Martha Ankomah has disrespected produced the likes of Yvonne Nelson, and Jackie Appiah among other Ghallywood stars who are bigger than she is.

He also added that the likes of Van Vicker, Prince David Osei, Rosely Ngisah, Kalybos, James Gardiner, and many other Ghallywood stars bigger than Martha Ankomah all humbled themselves to shoot movies in Kumasi and made money out of them.

Lilwin claims the actress could have said something better; maybe charging a huge amount so the director would not be able to pay or giving a sensible reason rather than saying she will never shoot a movie in Kumnasi because their stories are senseless.

Lilwin added that Martha Ankomah is a nobody and had it not been GTP and men sleeping with her in exchange for money she would have died out of hunger.

Lagos Govt Shuts Mandilas Market

Lagos Govt Shuts Mandilas Market

The Lagos State Government has ordered the immediate closure of Mandilas Market for the next two days.

This is to enable marketers comply with its directive for the removal of illegal make-shift structures erected on road setbacks within and around the market.

The closure notice was issued on Saturday during a joint inspection and enforcement exercise carried out by the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA), in conjunction with some law enforcement agencies and other relevant government agencies in charge of emergency-related matters.

The enforcement exercise followed the expiration of the 14-day self-removal notice earlier given by the state government to the traders to remove their wares and shops from the roads, especially around Mandilas on Lagos Island.

Olajide Babatunde, Special Adviser to the Governor on electronic Geographic Information System and Urban Development; his colleague in charge of Central Business District, Bola Olumegbon-Lawal; the Permanent Secretary, Office of Urban Development, Nurudeen Sodehinde and the General Manager of LASBCA, Gbolahan Oki, led the enforcement team during the monitoring exercise.

Speaking on the rationale behind the extension, Babatunde explained that the extension of the initial ultimatum was meant to further give room for the affected shop owners to salvage their belongings and voluntarily remove obstructions erected on walkways.

“With the level of non-compliance and lackadaisical attitude put up by the affected traders, the state government is fully ready to enforce compliance and removal where necessary upon the expiration of the new ultimatum given,” he said.

Olumegbon-Lawal, on her part, said the clean-up exercise being embarked upon by the state government throughout the entire Lagos Island was in the interest and safety of the residents.

She said: “The rate of safety infractions being perpetrated within the Mandilas market including the erection of high capacity generating set on make-shift extensions on first, and second floors.”

While pleading for self-compliance from the affected shop owners to remove all illegal attachments and extensions, Olumegbon-Lawal stated that the state government is desirous of achieving a saner, well-organised and clean city devoid of all forms of environmental nuisance.

Also speaking, Sodehinde said the state government was sending strong a message to Lagosians to be law-abiding.

He added, “If the state government is forced to carry out the removal of the extensions and illegal structures, the affected persons would be compelled to pay for such exercise.

“Lagos is an urban state and this implies that there should be organisation and proper coordination in the way and manner we carry out our businesses and all our engagements.”

He assured Lagosians that the monitoring and enforcement of compliance with the ongoing cleanup would be sustained until total sanity is restored to Lagos Island.

The Lagos State Government had on January 29, 2024, given a 14-day ultimatum to traders occupying illegal structures in Lagos Island to evacuate.

Thirty percent of Africa’s sovereign reserves should be invested locally – Akufo-Addo

0

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has proposed that 30 per cent of Africa’s sovereign reserves held in foreign banks be invested in the continent’s financial institutions.

“We should decide that a minimum of 30 per cent of the reserves of each one of us, should, be invested in the multilateral institutions,” he said, citing the African Development Bank (AfDB) and Afreximbank.

Strengthening the capital base of those banks was a necessity to enhance their balance sheet and boost their capacity to facilitate more and more resources for the continent’s development and growth, he argued.

The concept note underpinning the Presidential Dialogue hinges on the fact that the changing global economic landscape has underlined the need to expedite the establishment of the AU financial institutions and to revise the legal instruments establishing them.

Did Ghana eliminate ghost names in 23 days? –

0

The subject of ghost names on the government payroll has been an annual ritual in terms of discovery and media reportage as successive governments lament their presence and its overall effect on the public purse.

In recent years, the digital route has become a strong remedy in the conversations around finding a permanent solution to the scourge.

Enter Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia’s digitalisation efforts and how an integrated system from various stakeholders could help minimise, if not eliminate ghost names.

Bawumia introduces new policy to clear ‘ghost’ names in government payroll

On January 10, 2024, Bawumia rolled out a new policy initiated by the government to eliminate ‘ghost’ names from the public sector payroll system.

While addressing an audience at the launch of the National Mechanised Payroll Database of the Controller and Accountant General’s Department (CAGD) in Accra, he explained that as part of efforts to purge the government’s payroll of all ‘ghost names’, the new policy would ensure that all government workers link their Ghana Card details to the payroll.

“This linkage between the NIA database and the government payroll will significantly contribute to eliminating the incidence of ghost names on the government of Ghana’s mechanised payroll system, which has persisted for some time,” Bawumia stated in a social media post.

There are no more ghost names on the government payroll – Controller declares

Barely a month after Bawumia launched what was to be a solution to the decades-long headache, the Controller and Accountant General, Kwasi Kwaning Bosompem, declared that there are no ghost names on the government’s payroll.

Speaking on the sidelines of the 2024 Controller and Accountant General’s Department Annual Conference in Kumasi (February 1 – 2), the government’s chief accountant said that the ghost name-free payroll had come about because of a newly implemented comprehensive digital solution.

The said solution is behind the ‘No Ghana Card – No Pay’ policy; the Controller and Accountant General’s Department (CAGD) is currently readying itself to roll out effective March 2024.

“Payroll database has been an active database all these years. What it means is that we’ve gone through a process of putting intervention in place to make sure the payroll database is credible and that there would not be any instance where we’ll find an unauthorised person existing on the payroll and benefiting from the government’s resources.”

On the specific subject of ghost names, Bosompem told journalists emphatically: “There are no ghost names [on government’s payroll] recently,” according to a report on Asaase Radio.

About the National Mechanised Payroll Database

National Mechanised Payroll Database of the Controller and Accountant-General’s Department (CAGD) with the National Identification Authority (NIA) Database provides real-time biometric validation and verification of government workers decentralised to the various CAGD Verification Centres across the country to ensure more accessibility and convenience.

The system will ensure real-time validation and verification of new and old employees, improve data accuracy for decision-making, and enhance transparency and accountability.

It is expected to save the government the huge costs of regular Payroll Audits across the country since the data can be audited anytime at source and will operate in decentralised biometric verification centres, saving users the cost of travelling to Accra for validation and verification.

Some students sleep on the floor, others study with plastic chairs – Wey Gey Hey senior prefect laments –

0

The senior prefect of Wesley Girls Senior High School (Wey Gey Hey) has lamented the lack of adequate infrastructure in the A-list school.

According to a report by Joynews, Abena Benewah raised the issue during a recent Speech and Prize Giving Day attended by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

Students in the school are forced to sleep on the bare floor due to lack of space, Benewah is quoted to have said, a sentiment the school’s headmistress echoed.

“Hundreds of girls are sleeping on the floor. This problem also pushes us to eat our meals in two batches,” she said before appealing to the government to help deal with the congestion and overcrowding in the school.

“From the tiny inconveniences to the deep and large potholes which hinder our progress, we have learnt as a school to endure, but I ask myself must we suffer when we can take help?” she quizzed.

She also highlighted other concerns like the shortage of furniture and other challenges with the IT lab.

“The moment in which we gaze upon our sisters who must use plastic chairs in their classrooms and lack tables to comfortably write on cannot be put on hold,” she added.

The issue of infrastructure has often come up relative to the government’s Free Senior High School policy, where the track system has been implemented to ensure that two streams are in school at all times.

Opposition voices have blamed the government for forcing through a policy without the requisite infrastructure to support same, but the government has denied the claim.

National Cathedral to be ‘officially commissioned’ in 17 days? –

0

All things being equal, the National Cathedral of Ghana will officially be commissioned for public use on March 6, 2024.

That is 17 days from now, and that is purely based on the fact that it is what was promised by the Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo government.

After all, what is there not to believe in this promise when, all along, the driving force of this national project, described as one that would marginally boost the tourism acumen of Ghana, has stemmed from the personal promise of the sitting president to God?

“I made a pledge to Almighty God that if he was gracious enough to grant my party, the New Patriotic Party, and I victory in the 2016 elections, after two unsuccessful attempts, I would help build the cathedral to His glory and honour,” Akufo-Addo said at a ceremony to officially begin the project.

This was in 2020 during the groundbreaking ceremony to commence the cathedral’s construction.

And then, on July 29, 2021, then-Minister of Finance Ken Ofori-Atta announced that the project was on track and would be ready before the 2024 general elections.

In his words, completing and commissioning the controversial National Cathedral would coincide with the country’s Independence Day in 2024, March 6.

“Mr. Speaker, work on the National Cathedral is progressing speedily, and following the program of the contractors, and with God helping us, the National Cathedral is expected to be officially commissioned on March 6, 2024. Upon completion, the National Cathedral would provide a sacred space for formal religious activities of State and symbolize the enormous contribution of faith to Nation Building,” he told parliament.

Along the way, President Akufo-Addo has given several reassurances on going ahead with the plan to build the edifice.

On September 12, 2022, he again stated that no matter the circumstances, the cathedral would be constructed and finished.

Speaking at the Pentecost International Worship Centre (PIWC) in Accra, the president reiterated that he will not let the plan go unimplemented.

“We will build the National Cathedral by all means. We will finish the construction before I’ll say what I have to say about it,” he affirmed to the cheers from a section of the gathering. So, technically, all should be in place to ensure this target is achieved, no matter what.

As it stands now, many Ghanaians are on edge, waiting for the national edifice to be ready for commissioning on March 6, 2024 – only a few days away.

But what have been the setbacks to the project so far?

Undoubtedly, there have been financial constraints to the National Cathedral project, culminating in the project being placed on hold at certain points.

For instance, in August 2023, major news outlets reported that the construction had stalled because of a lack of funds.

The foundation works on the multi-million project at the time had been completed, being the farthest the project had gone as of that time.

The Executive Director of the National Cathedral Project, Dr Paul Opoku-Mensah, appealed to the Christian community in Ghana and the Diaspora to make financial commitments to help sustain and complete the project.

“At the moment, we have suspended the project a bit to ensure that we have adequate resources to continue. The worst part will be to have people on site and pay them while work is not going on,” he said.

He said that although the contractors and their staff were on site, the workers had been sent home until there was enough money to continue with work.

“We hope that in the next couple of weeks, we can raise funds and begin work again. Our ability to complete this work is dependent on Ghanaians helping us,” he added.

Not too long afterwards, though, there were other counter-reports indicating that the National Cathedral executive chairman said he didn’t mean the project had been suspended.

Resignations from the National Cathedral Board of Trustees:

Among other challenges have been the high-profile resignations of some of the members of the Board of Trustees of the National Cathedral.

These have included the Presiding Archbishop and General Overseer of the Action Chapel International (ACI) Ministry, Archbishop Nicholas Duncan-Williams, and the President of the Eastwood Anaba Ministries, Eastwood Anaba.

The two announced their resignations in a joint statement, citing their growing concerns about transparency and accountability within the project.

Later, Bishop Dag Heward-Mills of the United Denominations Originating from the Lighthouse Group of Churches (UD-OLGC), also resigned from the board.

According to reports, his resignation was due to the many ignored concerns that were raised for years with regard to the construction of the National Cathedral.

For instance, in his resignation letter he wrote addressed to the Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the National Cathedral, President Akufo-Addo and others, he raised concerns about the cost, design, fundraising, and location of the project, among others, but did not receive a response after writing several letters.

“I feel that the treatment of the issues I have raised in my several letters has been unfortunate. My letters have been ignored in the past, not attended to for years, and at best addressed flippantly,” he said.

Also, it was reported that a former Moderator of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana, Rev. Prof Cephas Omenyo, also resigned from the Board of Trustees due to ill health.

The Secretary to the Board of Trustees, Rev. Victor Kusi Boateng, has also been embroiled in a number of issues, having been on the radar of the Member of Parliament for North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa.

In some of these instances, the MP suggested impropriety on the part of the secretary to the Board of Trustees of the National Cathedral of Ghana, Rev. Victor Kusi Boateng.

On January 16, 2023, the MP made some allegations against Rev. Kusi Boateng, who is the secretary to the Board of Trustees of the National Cathedral of Ghana.

In an earlier revelation about the National Cathedral, Okudzeto Ablakwa said a whopping GH¢2.6 million was dished out to a company named JNS Talent Centre Limited.

Further investigations into the alleged payment led to the discovery of one Kwabena Adu Gyamfi as a director of JNS Talent Centre.

Having confirmed the identities of two out of three directors of the centre, Ablakwa dug deeper in a bid to discover the identity of the third director, Kwabena Adu Gyamfi.

According to his findings, citing a number of statutory documents, Kwabena Adu Gyamfi was the same as Reverend Kusi Boateng, who has allegedly been operating under the pseudonym Kwabena Adu Gyamfi.

Based on all the above and being fair with the bare facts, the question on the minds of many is whether this is going to add up to the several promises of the Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo government that have been unfulfilled, if not overly delayed in being implemented.

Several properties destroyed by tidal waves in Keta

0

Residents living along the coast in Keta and its adjoining communities have once again been hit with devastation caused by tidal waves.

Residents woke up on Friday morning only to be greeted by sea water in their homes, destroying already dilapidated structures after years of suffering from the tidal waves and its effects.

Some residents who spoke to Citi News say the situation has become unbearable and called for a solution to end the crisis.

“The tidal waves have since been worrying us. Last year, we had to suffer from this phenomenon and this year, we have started experiencing the same problems. We want the authorities to take urgent steps quickly to ensure this does not affect many people.

“We are also appealing for the dredging along the coast. It has been affecting our businesses as well. Trees here have also been submerged in the sea,” a resident lamented.

Although I wear hijab, I will fight for people to wear any cloth they want to wear – Aisha Yesufu

Aisha Yesufu, popular rights activist and stalwart of the Labour Party, has accused President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of rigging himself into power to kill Nigerians.

The activist, via X on Saturday, said those close to the President can’t feel the hardship Nigerians are currently experiencing.

According to her, Nigerians, who experienced poverty during the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari, are witnessing another level of hardship now.

“The people that were in multi-dimensional poverty during Buhari, can you imagine what state they are in now? Tinubu rigged his way in to destroy Nigeria.

Recall that the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) had announced a two-day nationwide protest over the hardship being experienced by Nigerians as well as the deteriorating security situation in the country.

The protest will begin a week after the expiration of the 14 day ultimatum it issued to the Federal Government which expires on February 23.

The days for the nationwide protest are February 27 and 28.

Ogun Monarch Suspended For Allegedly Abusing Naira Notes

0

The Olu of Owode in Obafemi/Owode Local Government of Ogun State, identified as Oba Kolawole Sowemimo, has confirmed his two-month suspension without salaries by the Egba Traditional Council.

This is coming, following the monarch’s alleged abuse of naira notes, as seen in a viral video from early January.

INFORMATION NIGERIA learnt that in the video, the royal father was captured on camera adorning popular Fuji musician Wasiu Ayinde with new notes of N1,000.

However, the event did not settle well with the Egba Traditional Council as they suspend the monarch for his public degradation of the Nigerian currency, which is a violation of the Central Bank of Nigeria’s regulations.

The suspension was reportedly imposed during the February statutory meeting of the Egba Traditional Council, chaired by the Alake and paramount ruler of Egbaland, Oba Adedotun Gbadebo.

It was gathered that the joint resolution passed during the meeting approved the suspension of the monarch based on the Ethics Committee’s recommendation.

Speaking to journalists on the development, Sowemimo said that the suspension was announced during the traditional rulers meeting on Friday.

He said: “They said the suspension was due to the way I spent money on one musician. And when I was asked if I had anything to say, I stood up and apologised for whatever I had done wrong, and the suspension, which was earlier announced to be for three months without salaries, was reduced to two months.

“I totally accept the verdict of the council because it is the person that we love that we chastise, so I am good with the decision.”

I have not joined NDC

Cheddar

Political movement, the New Force has refuted claims that its founder, Nana Kwame Bediako, popularly known as Cheddar, has joined the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).

In a statement issued on Saturday, February 17, the movement clarified that any reports suggesting Cheddar’s affiliation with the NDC are false and should be disregarded.

The statement emphasized that New Force has no intentions of aligning with any organisation or political party to achieve its objectives.

However, the movement expressed concern about alleged attempts by the government or its representatives to undermine Cheddar’s leadership.

“It has come to the attention of the New Force Team that certain online news outlets are publishing news items purporting that Nana Kwame Bediako, leader of The New Force has joined or intends to join NDC flagbearer John Dramani Mahama.”

“The news items make it appear as though Nana Kwame Bediako finds it expedient to join another political party organisation because several efforts and plans of The New Force have so far been frustrated by the current government administration,” an excerpt of the statement said.

We are criminalising the act, not the individual – Sam George [Video]

0

Member of Parliament for Ningo-Prampam constituency, Sam George has clarified that the criminalisation of LGBTQ pertains to the act itself, not the individuals involved.

According to him, anyone choosing to engage in LGBTQ activities must face the consequences.

Speaking on JoyNews’ Newsfile on Saturday, February 17, Mr. George dismissed claims by the Deputy Majority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, who suggested that the LGBTQ act is behavioral.

The Ningo-Prampram MP emphasised that the LGBTQ act is not supported by science but is merely an opinion.

“It is not backed by science and is one that I would call emotional. The science and the facts establish the fact that homosexuality is not behavioral, and I can take anybody on that debate,” he stated.

Mr. George stressed that “if you want to be objective, you cannot be selective in your objectivity.”

Background.

Mr Afenyo-Markin stood against the third reading of the anti-LGBTQ bill in Parliament on Thursday, February 15.

He stated that he is not completely against the principles of the anti-LGBTQ+ bill and supports it, but emphasised that he opposes the provision that would lead to the imprisonment of individuals accused of engaging in or promoting LGBTQ activities.

“The essence of this motion is to afford this august house the opportunity to thoroughly consider amendments that are proposed in the bill with the view of substituting community service for incarceration,” he said.

According to him, the bill’s punitive action would not aid in rehabilitating the culprits.

“The issue before us is behavioral, and it is my humble view that in dealing with behavioural matters, incarceration is not the solution. It makes the matter worse.

He explained that “to jail a person for his/her sexuality will not be the solution in maintaining our Ghanaian family values and ensuring proper human sexual rights.”

Parliament, on Thursday, February 8, approved a three-to-five-year jail term for individuals who wilfully promote or sponsor LGBTQ activities, while those caught in the act are to be sentenced to a minimum of 6 months and a maximum of 3 years.

The Last Chance God Gave Us Is My Feature With Beyonce- Shatta Wale

0

Self-acclaimed dancehall king Shatta Wale has said that the last chance God gave Ghanaians was his feature with celebrated American, Beyonce.

Shatta Wale claims the collaboration between Stonebwoy and Rihana and that of Sarkodie and Jay Z can never be possible.

Speaking in an interview on 3Music TV monitored by Ghbase.com, the “Ayoo” hitmaker said that he does not understand why Ghanaians would say that Nigerian musicians are doing better than Ghanaian musicians.

According to Shatta Wale, God gave the chance to Nigerian and Ghanaian musicians, but they did not value that chance.

Shatta Wale claims his collaboration with Beyonce was a chance Ghanaians should have grabbed, but because it was him, Ghanaians did not support it.

He noted that if it were Sarkodie who got that chance, Ghanaians would have gone all out to support him.

To him, his collaboration with Beyonce is the last chance Ghanaians got from God, so, no musician should be in anticipation of having a great collaboration like he and Beyonce.

“When people are talking about Nigeria, I don’t want them to continue because I feel like Ghana got their chance. Let me tell you, the last chance God gave us was Shatta Wale featuring Beyonce. But you see, we want to watch the coat man; we want somebody like Sarkodie” Shatta Wale said

“How many people even wish for Sarkodie to do a song with Jay Z? I pray Jay Z will just do it for him before the world comes to an end. That is the wish of all industry players for Sarkodie”, he added.

He also advised Sarkodie that “It is not about behaving like Jay Z, but rather how real are you to the universe? Are you connecting yourself? Are you listening to what God is saying? People are not doing that; God gave us that last shot.”
