GPL 2025/26: Late Tweneboah strike ends Kotoko’s unbeaten run

0

Asante Kotoko’s unbeaten start to the 2025/26 Premier League season came to an end after a 2–1 defeat to Basake Holy Stars in an outstanding fixture at the AAK 11 Arena.

The Porcupine Warriors, who had gone 10 games without defeat, were handed their first loss of the campaign courtesy of a late strike from Prince Tweneboah.

Holy Stars took the lead through Richard Somiah, whose well-taken effort ignited the home crowd.

Kotoko, however, responded swiftly when forward Kwame Poku found the equaliser, restoring hope for the visitors and setting up a tense finale.

Just as the match seemed destined to end in a draw, Basake Holy Stars produced a moment of late brilliance.

In the first minute of added time, Prince Tweneboah fired home the winner, sending the stadium into euphoric celebrations and securing a significant victory for the home side.

The defeat is a setback for Kotoko, who now turn their attention to a high-profile encounter against Medeama SC at the Baba Yara Stadium on Sunday.

The Porcupine Warriors will be eager to bounce back quickly as the competition tightens at the top of the Premier League table.

Guinea-Bissau soldiers say they have taken power after reports of president’s arrest

0

Guinea-Bissau President Umaro Sissoco Embaló has been removed from office Guinea-Bissau President Umaro Sissoco Embaló has been removed from office

A group of military officers say they have seized control of Guinea-Bissau amid reports that the president, Umaro Sissoco Embaló, has been arrested.

Shortly after gunshots were heard in the capital, Bissau, government sources told the BBC that Embaló had been detained.

Military officers then appeared on state TV, saying they had suspended the electoral process and would be in charge until further notice.

The West African nation had been awaiting the outcome of Sunday’s presidential election, in which the main opposition candidate had been disqualified from running.

The results were expected on Thursday – both Embaló and his closest rival Fernando Dias have claimed victory.

Late on Wednesday afternoon, Embaló told France 24 in a phone call: “I have been deposed.”

Witnesses in Bissau heard gunfire earlier on, at around 13:00 GMT, but it was not immediately clear who was involved in the shooting or if there were any casualties.

Hundreds of people on foot and in vehicles fled, seeking shelter as the shots rang out, the AFP news agency reported.

Later on, General Denis N’Canha, head of the military household at the presidential palace, read out a statement declaring a takeover.

He said officers had formed “the High Military Command for the Restoration of Order” and closed the border.

Gen N’Canha instructed the population to “remain calm”.

In addition to Embaló, the president’s army staff and a number of ministers have reportedly been arrested.

Guinea-Bissau, one of the poorest countries in the world, has seen nine coups or attempted coups since it gained independence from Portugal in 1974.

Embaló has said he has survived multiple coup attempts during his time in office. However, his critics allege he has fabricated crises in order to crack down on dissent.

Guinea-Bissau has a population of just under two million people and has been called a “narco-state” by the UN, due to its role as a key transit point in trafficking cocaine from Latin America to Europe.

BoG reverts to 14-day bill as main tool for Open Market Operations

0

Dr Johnson Asiama, Bank of Ghana Governor Dr Johnson Asiama, Bank of Ghana Governor

The Bank of Ghana says it will return to the use of the 14-day bill as its primary instrument for Open Market Operations (OMO).

Open Market Operations involve the buying and selling of government securities by a central bank to regulate the money supply and influence interest rates. By purchasing securities, the central bank injects money into the banking system, increasing liquidity and typically lowering interest rates to stimulate economic activity.

According to the Governor, Dr Johnson Asiama, the move forms part of additional policy measures introduced at the 127th Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) meeting, which also saw the central bank cut the monetary policy rate from 21.5 percent to 18 percent.

“In addition to the policy rate reduction, the Bank will return to the use of the 14-day bill as its main instrument for conducting Open Market Operations,” the Governor announced at a press briefing in Accra on November 26, 2025.

BoG cuts policy rate further from 21.5% to 18%

Dr Asiama explained that reinstating the 14-day bill is expected to strengthen liquidity management and improve the effectiveness of monetary policy transmission across the banking sector.

He noted that the move aligns with the Bank’s broader strategy to maintain price stability while supporting economic activity.

The Governor emphasised that the 14-day bill will now serve as the Bank’s main tool for absorbing excess liquidity from the market, which is a critical step in ensuring that interest rate changes translate more efficiently into the broader economy.

Dafeamekpor urges Speaker to bar Matthew Nyindam from speaking in Parliament

0

The Majority Chief Whip, Rockson Nelson Etse Dafeamekpor, has urged the Speaker of Parliament to prevent the Member of Parliament for Kpandai, Matthew Nyindam, from participating in debates on the floor.

According to the South Dayi MP, Parliament has been duly served with a court order challenging Nyindam’s legitimacy and directing a re-run of the parliamentary election in the constituency. He argued that allowing the MP to speak would contradict the court’s directive.

Despite the Minority presenting Nyindam to participate in proceedings, Dafeamekpor asked the Speaker to deny him the opportunity.

In response, Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin called on the Speaker to disregard the request, insisting that due process must be respected. He also cautioned Dafeamekpor to exercise restraint, noting that Parliament is a forum for intellectual discourse, not confrontational exchanges.

2026 Budget full of promises that won’t materialise – Oforikrom MP

0

Member of Parliament for Oforikrom, Michael Kwasi Addo, has criticised the 2026 Budget Statement and Economic Policy, describing it as a document packed with promises that are unlikely to be fulfilled.

Speaking on Citi Eyewitness News on Wednesday, November 26, he argued that the budget fails to provide a realistic plan for stimulating economic growth or addressing Ghana’s debt challenges.

According to him, the policy document simply repeats commitments the government has consistently been unable to deliver.

He maintained that the government’s track record suggests that many of the proposals outlined in the budget will not materialise.

“This budget has a lot of promises. I was expecting a budget that will stimulate growth while watching our debt sustainability. But judging from what has gone on over this year, I do not see the growth, I just see promises which will not materialize,” he said.

Mr. Addo recalled that the 2025 Budget promised the rehabilitation of four major sports facilities — the Baba Yara Sports Stadium, the Accra Sports Stadium, the Abiriw Sports Stadium, and the Essipon Sports Stadium. He claimed that none of these projects has seen any progress.

“As it stands now nothing has happened. Because the Sports Minister knew they were going to read the budget and question will come up, he drove to Essipon empty-handed,” he stated.

‘Nana Konadu was our trailblazer’

0

The sisters of the late former First Lady, Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings, have described her as the “trailblazer” who shaped their childhood and guided their path into adulthood. They delivered the emotional tribute during a Requiem Mass held in her honour on Wednesday, November 26.

Speaking on behalf of the family, they recalled how the former First Lady assumed the role of an elder sister by circumstance, taking charge at a time when their older sibling was away in boarding school.

According to them, Nana Konadu naturally stepped into leadership, becoming the anchor around whom the family and neighbouring children found direction.
“In telling the love story of our sister, Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings, we remember her as the one who mobilised us all. She guided us through life’s troubling moments and stood up for us whenever she sensed unfairness. She set the example we followed as our parents moulded us,” they said.

They recounted how children in the Accra Ridge area, mostly from families of the early civil service under the First Republic, looked up to her for organisation, protection, and mentorship.

Her sisters noted that what began as childhood leadership would later blossom into national service and a lifelong commitment to advocacy.
The Requiem Mass, attended by Former President Nana Akufo Addo, Rebecca Akufo Addo Former First Lady, Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga, family, friends, and sympathisers, marked another solemn step in the preparation toward her final funeral rites. The gathering reflected the widespread grief that followed her passing on October 23, 2025.

GIA calls for stronger gov’t collaboration on sustainable infrastructure development

0

The Ghana Institute of Architects (GIA) has held its 2025 Annual General Meeting (AGM) with a call on the Government to partner and engage professional architects and other built-environment experts to guide sustainable housing and infrastructural development.

GIA President, Arc. Tony Asare, who made the call during the Institute’s 2025 AGM in Cape Coast on Thursday, 20th November 2025, emphasised that city planning is not just about erecting buildings but about creating vibrant, resilient, and inclusive spaces that foster growth, innovation, and human flourishing.

“As Ghana’s cities expand, the nation must harness technology, creativity, and interdisciplinary collaboration to tackle challenges related to sustainable development, climate resilience, and inclusive growth,” he noted.

Arc. Asare urged the Government to urgently address the shortage of professional architects within the Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs), cautioning that the absence of built-environment professionals is significantly contributing to chaotic and unplanned development across the country.

This year’s AGM was held under the theme: ‘From Castles to Our Future Cities: Lessons for Sustainable Development.’ The Guest Speaker was Sir Samuel Esson Jonah, Chancellor of the University of Cape Coast and Executive Chairman of Jonah Capital.

The event was attended by several dignitaries, including a delegation from the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts led by Mr Kofi Ohene Benning, Director of Finance and Administration; the Central Regional Minister, Aduamoah Ekow Panyin Okyere; and representatives from the Oguaa Traditional Area on behalf of Osabarimba Kwesi Atta II, Omanhene of Oguaa.

Government’s Commitment

The Deputy Minister for Works and Housing, Arc. Gizella Tetteh Agbotui reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to partnering with the GIA to advance sustainable housing and infrastructure. She emphasised that architects are central to shaping Ghana’s future cities.

“Architects are not just designers of buildings; they are designers of possibilities. Every sketch, every line, every dot has the potential to shape the future of our country,” she said.

She announced the Ministry’s readiness to deepen collaboration with the Institute in areas such as research, sustainable material use, design competitions, mentorship, capacity building, and strengthening contractor competencies.

For his part, the Central Regional Minister, Aduamoah Ekow Panyin Okyere, assured the Institute that the Government is committed to increasing the number of architects within the MMDAs. He also encouraged greater use of local building materials, citing rising cement costs and the need for sustainable alternatives.

Mr Okyere highlighted the significance of Cape Coast’s iconic castles and forts, describing them as monuments that reflect centuries of durable architectural practice and offering valuable lessons for modern city planning.

Delivering the keynote address, Sir Jonah described the AGM theme as timely, noting that architecture is a profound reflection of a nation’s values. He urged architects to uphold integrity, resist societal ills such as corruption and galamsey, and ensure that Ghanaian architecture continues to reflect the nation’s culture and heritage.

“Do not be over-reliant on cement. Let us be innovative. Integrity builds; advocacy builds. You are custodians of standards, so do not lower your voices on issues affecting society,” he charged.

Call for Professional Excellence

Chairman of the function, Arc. Joseph E. Hayford, Principal Architect of MultiCAD Consulting, urged members to uphold the highest standards of professionalism. He encouraged deep deliberation at this year’s AGM to produce design and planning solutions that balance economic, social, and environmental needs.

‘What kind of kangaroo court is this?’ – Minority reacts to Kpandai election rerun

0

Alexander Afenyo-Markin is the Minority Leader in Parliament Alexander Afenyo-Markin is the Minority Leader in Parliament

The Minority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Kwamina Afenyo-Markin, has sharply criticised the Tamale High Court’s decision ordering a rerun of the Kpandai parliamentary election.

Speaking to journalists in Parliament on Wednesday, November 26, 2025, he described the ruling as legally unsound and deeply troubling.

High Court orders rerun of Kpandai parliamentary election

“He’s fixed a date for judgment, no matter what; he’s supposed to deliver a judgment, yet he decided to stay away from determining the matter because a party decided belatedly to file a notice of withdrawal of the case,” Afenyo-Markin lamented.

He argued that the court’s subsequent directive for a complete rerun of all 152 polling stations defies ordinary legal reasoning.

The Effutu MP further alleged that the NDC candidate and his supporters were aware of the judgment in advance.

Kpandai MP speaks on High Court’s election rerun decision

“The NDC candidate and his supporters were aware of the judgment before the day, to the extent that on the day of the set judgment, the regional minister led a team of NDC party faithfuls into the courtroom, anticipating the expected results, the result that they were going to have judgment in their favour. The judge, who spent minutes, walked out of the courtroom claiming that his judgment would be ready on Friday. Meanwhile, in less than 24 hours, a court order was being sent to Parliament and Honorable Nyindam,” Afenyo-Markin alleged.

Questioning the integrity of the process, the Minority Leader asked, “What kind of kangaroo judicial system do we have now in Ghana?”

He also warned that actions by the judiciary could threaten national stability.

“The judiciary must know that their actions and inactions to serve the interests of whoever their paymaster is have the tendency of destroying our peaceful republic,” he said.

Afenyo-Markin stressed that the Minority would not be silenced.

“We will not mince words. They can conspire to call us one by one for a so-called contempt of court. We are criticising their shameful conduct. We are not afraid. We are ready to be in Nsawam for their so-called contempt. The world will see their disgraceful conduct. We will not sit aloof and allow them to undermine the very rule of law that they are supposed to protect. How can a judge who calls himself a judge sit in court and misconduct himself in such a manner?” he added.

The Tamale High Court had ordered a rerun of the Kpandai parliamentary election within 30 days from Monday, November 24, 2025.

The ruling followed a petition filed by the 2024 National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary candidate, Daniel Nsala Wakpal, who challenged the validity of the 2024 election results.

Following the chart-topping success of his highly anticipated new album, “Walk With Me,” Ghanaian music sensation Kweku Smoke is ready to cap off a monumental year with the return of his flagship event: the Revival Concert.

Dubbed “The Rebirth,” this year’s concert is poised to transcend the traditional music festival, transforming GHUD Park on Wednesday, December 18, 2025, into a massive cultural celebration. The event is already one of the most anticipated festivals in Africa, with over 15,000 fans expected to attend.

Kweku Smoke enters this year’s concert on the heels of major accomplishments in 2024. In 2025 he shows no signs of slowing down as his new album, “Walk with Me,” made an immediate impact, soaring to the top of the Apple Music Ghana chart shortly after its release. This success further cemented his status as one of the biggest names in HipHop in Africa, as he was also ranked the third most streamed Ghanaian artiste on Spotify for 2024.

The inaugural Revival Concert in 2024 was a huge success, named the second-best December concert of 2024 by Ghana Music. That star-studded night featured explosive performances from icons like Sarkodie, Paedae, King Promise, O’Kenneth, Reggie, Beeztrap KOTM, and more.

Revival Concert “The Rebirth” is elevating the fan experience by introducing a dynamic series of pre-show activities. Attendees will be treated to a spectacular blend of high-octane entertainment and lifestyle features. The Revival Concert will have a luxurious car show which will feature a stunning fleet of exclusive, high-end vehicles. This year marks the introduction of two more activities that are a Skate Show with a thrilling displays from Ghana’s burgeoning skate culture scene and a Basketball Tournament that will feature every street in Ghana, as they faceoff to show which neighborhood has the best basketball players.

While last year set a high bar, fans are encouraged to prepare for an even bigger surprise factor on 18th December at GHUD Park. Organizers hint that “The Rebirth” will feature more surprise performances than ever before, promising a night of unforgettable moments and major star power alongside Kweku Smoke himself. Gates to the GHUD Park event will open early at 1:00pm to allow fans to enjoy all the festival activities.

This is more than a concert; it’s a cultural rebirth.

Everton Stun Man United Despite Early Red Card

10 men Everton beat Man United at Old Trafford

Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall delivered a sensational strike to seal a hard-fought 1-0 win for Everton at Old Trafford, despite the visitors being reduced to 10 men after a bizarre early dismissal involving their own players.

Everton began the match with energy and intent, but their momentum appeared to unravel when Idrissa Gueye was sent off just 13 minutes in for striking teammate Michael Keane during an on-field confrontation. The moment stunned both sets of players and threatened to derail the Toffees’ evening.

Instead, Sean Dyche’s side rallied impressively. Just before the half-hour mark, Dewsbury-Hall produced a brilliant solo effort, weaving through United’s midfield before curling the ball beyond André Onana to give Everton a surprise lead.

Manchester United dominated possession after the break but found little joy against Everton’s disciplined, deep-lying defence.

Bruno Fernandes blasted over from close range, and Jordan Pickford delivered a standout stop to deny Joshua Zirkzee as the hosts pushed desperately for an equaliser.

The victory lifts Everton to 11th in the Premier League table—nudging ahead of rivals Liverpool on goal difference—and marks only their second league win at Old Trafford in 33 attempts.

United, whose five-game unbeaten run came to an end on the anniversary of manager Ruben Amorim’s first match in charge, slip to 10th, remaining above Everton only on goals scored.

Everton return to action on Saturday evening against Newcastle United, while Manchester United travel to face Crystal Palace on Sunday.

Advancing Ghana’s agriculture through WSO’s sustainable certification

0

Agriculture remains the backbone of Ghana’s economy, employing more than a third of the workforce and contributing approximately 21.4% to the national GDP, according to recent statistics from the World Bank.

From cocoa the country’s most celebrated cash crop to staples such as maize, cassava and rice, the sector not only drives food security but also sustains millions of rural households.

With mounting concerns over climate change, the increasing effects of illegal mining, land degradation, and the need for responsible resource use, Ghana’s agricultural future hinges on embracing sustainability adopting practices that protect the environment, enhance productivity, and ensure long-term resilience.

The globally recognised, world-leading sustainability organisation, the World Sustainability Organization (WSO), has a presence in over 70 countries, with more than 1,000 companies certified and certifications represented on over 3,000 products globally.

Through its Friend of the Earth programme, WSO has introduced the Sustainable Agriculture Certification a powerful tool for producers and exporters to demonstrate compliance with international standards while protecting ecosystems and improving farmer livelihoods.

The introduction of the Sustainable Agriculture Certification follows WSO and Fort Group’s successful rollouts of Sustainable Hotels and Resorts, Restaurants, Fashion, Mining and Chocolate certifications in Ghana.

By extending into agriculture, the initiative targets one of the country’s most strategic sectors food exports and natural products.

By embracing eco-friendly practices, investing in green innovations, and meeting the rising global demand for responsibly sourced products, Ghana can strengthen its agricultural resilience while positioning itself as a leader in ethical trade.

The Sustainable Agriculture Certification ensures that farms and processors meet world-class requirements on biodiversity conservation, soil and water management practices that support long-term productivity, safe agrochemical use and waste reduction, among others.

Unlike crop-specific schemes, WSO’s certification offers a flexible standard that applies to multiple commodities.

This makes it particularly attractive for Ghana, where smallholders often cultivate several crops such as cashew and mango alongside cocoa.

Adopting the certification will bring multiple benefits to Ghanaian agricultural producers and exporters, including enhanced market access in the EU and beyond; premium positioning for Ghanaian brands in global markets; improved climate resilience and farmer incomes and increased visibility through WSO’s global sustainability network.

As Ghana diversifies its export portfolio beyond raw cocoa, the adoption of the Sustainable Agriculture Certification would help position the country as a hub for green, ethical and traceable agricultural products on the global stage.

Police arrest three for stealing sardines from accident truck

0

The Nkawkaw Divisional Police Command has arrested three individuals for stealing sardines from a cargo truck involved in an accident on the Accra-Kumasi highway at Kwahu Fodua in the Kwahu West Municipality of the Eastern Region.

The fully loaded container, with registration number AA 119CY, was en route from Accra to Kumasi with a driver and his mate on board when it overturned, blocking traffic in both directions.

While the exact cause of the accident is still under investigation, preliminary findings suggest the driver swerved to avoid a pothole in the middle of the road, causing the vehicle to tip over.

The incident drew a crowd of community members and passersby. As some assisted in towing the truck to clear the road, three individuals were caught stealing sardines from the overturned container and were handed over to the police.

The driver and his mate have been admitted to Holy Family Hospital in Nkawkaw for treatment.

Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has launched a sharp attack on Ghana’s judiciary, alleging it acts in the interest of political actors following the Tamale High Court’s decision to annul the 2024 parliamentary election in Kpandai Constituency.

On Monday, the court upheld a petition by NDC candidate Daniel Nsala Wakpal, who claimed the December 7, 2024, election was riddled with irregularities. The court ordered a rerun within 30 days, a decision that has drawn strong criticism from the Minority.

Speaking to journalists in Parliament on Wednesday, November 26, Mr. Afenyo-Markin described the judiciary’s conduct as “shameful,” claiming judges were serving the interests of their “paymasters.”

“The judiciary must know that their actions and inaction to serve the interests of whoever their paymaster is have the tendency of destroying our peaceful republic. We will not mince words. They can conspire to call us one by one for a so-called contempt of court. We are criticising their shameful conduct. We are not afraid,” he said.

He also questioned the manner in which the ruling was delivered, calling it unprecedented and legally troubling.

“How can a judge who calls himself a judge sit in court and misconduct himself in such a manner and expect the country to be quiet? This order, with massive political, legal, and democratic consequences, was pronounced without a full written judgment. There were no written reasons, no factual findings, no legal analysis, just a naked directive issued into the public domain,” Mr. Afenyo-Markin said.

He further noted that while courts occasionally deliver rulings with reasons to follow, it is unacceptable in a case of such magnitude.

“I am a practising lawyer of experience at the bar. I understand that courts occasionally deliver rulings with reasons to follow. But such a practice is the exception, not the rule. And it is never acceptable when the stakes are this high,” he added.

The Effutu MP also alleged that the NDC had prior knowledge of the court’s decision before it was officially delivered, raising concerns about transparency and fairness in the judicial process.

Deputy Education Minister rejects claims of sanitary pad procurement scandal

0

Deputy Minister for Education, Dr Clement Apaak, has rejected claims from the Minority in Parliament that the government is inflating the cost of sanitary pads being distributed to female students.

This comes after the Member of Parliament for Old Tafo, Vincent Ekow Assafuah, on Tuesday, questioned the allocation of GH¢292 million for the procurement of 6.6 million sanitary pads.

He argued that the figures do not match current market prices, suggesting possible inflation in the cost.

Speaking to journalists in Parliament on Wednesday, November 26, Dr Apaak insisted that the claims were baseless and politically motivated.

He argued that the Minority was determined to manufacture a “scandal” to damage the reputation of the Mahama administration.

Dr Apaak said the Old Tafo MP had engaged in calculations that were misleading.

“For the Honourable Member of Parliament to disingenuously perform what the Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has described as chop-bar arithmetic, we can only conclude that it is yet another desperate attempt to try and enthuse the existence of a scandal to the John Dramani Mahama-led government so that the decomposing elephant can seek to equalise,” Dr Apaak said.

The Deputy Education Minister noted that there was no wrongdoing.

“There is no scandal. There would never be a scandal. The NDC under John Dramani Mahama, the Minister of Education, has not procured a pack of sanitary pads at 45 Ghana cedis and will never do so,” he said.

Dr Apaak added that the government has been transparent throughout the process and is committed to ensuring value for money.

“We have statistics as a transparent, accountable government which promised the good people of this country to reset our governance and to ensure value for money,” he said.

According to him, 3.9 million sanitary pads have so far been distributed to pupils in 20,744 public basic schools. In addition, 2.6 million pads have been supplied to girls in 906 senior high and TVET institutions.

He explained that a total of 398,701 pupils in basic schools have benefited from the programme. At the junior high school level, 1.1 million girls have received pads, while 968,285 girls in senior high schools have benefited.

Dr Apaak said the intervention has so far reached 2,578,915 female students from primary five to senior high school, describing it as “life-changing” and insisting the programme is being implemented with integrity.

ICPD held stakeholder engagements on financial crime prevention ICPD held stakeholder engagements on financial crime prevention

The International Centre for Public Development (ICPD) has wrapped up a four-day outreach mission to the Northern and Upper East Regions, marking its contribution to International Fraud Awareness Week with a series of focused stakeholder engagements on financial crime prevention.

The initiative was led by senior officials Hope Kwaku Nyadi, Head of Programmes and Public Relations, Ellis Asamani, Centre Coordinator, and James Zirah Salifu, Head of Finance, the team held discussions with regional actors across law enforcement, local government, business, and media.

A major part of the mission centred on meetings with the Northern and Upper East Regional Directorates of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO).

The two institutions explored deeper collaboration, emphasising stronger information-sharing systems, coordinated strategies, and improved early-warning mechanisms to curb fraud and other financial offences.

Beyond EOCO, ICPD consulted the Small and Medium Indigenous Poultry Farmers Association of Ghana, the Northern and Upper East Regional Coordinating Councils, and other governance structures.

These engagements highlighted persistent compliance gaps, capacity limitations in financial reporting, and the need for more robust governance practices across public and private institutions.

The delegation also met Hajj Yussif Musah, CEO of Man Forex Bureau, to discuss risks linked to counterfeit currency, robbery incidents, and money-laundering vulnerabilities.

A separate session with Lydia Ania Ajono, CEO of Radio Gurune, focused on how media platforms can drive public education on fraud and financial misconduct.

ICPD committed to developing targeted training in Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) for radio personnel and traditional leaders, along with tailored capacity-building initiatives for regional staff working on financial crime prevention.

According to Centre Coordinator Ellis Asamani, insights from the visit will shape the organisation’s 2026 Capacity Building and Anti-Fraud Programme.

He emphasised ICPD’s intention to reinforce transparency, professional standards, and responsible governance across the regions.

The strengthening of ties between ICPD and EOCO was singled out as a notable outcome of the mission, with both bodies agreeing to expand joint efforts to tackle corruption and financial crime.

PPPs key to unlocking economic potential

The country’s roadmap to a sustainable, inclusive and transformative development demands a mutual collaboration between the private and public sector, Professor of Strategy – Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration, Professor Kwaku Appiah-Adu, has affirmed.

He highlighted this during his speech as the guess speaker for the 10th Ghana Corporate Executives’ Awards organised by the Entrepreneurs Foundation of Ghana in Accra, while calling for a renewed national commitment to Public-Private Partnerships (PPPs) as engines of economic progress.

“For more than two decades, I have had the privilege of serving my country in diverse capacities — as a technocrat, strategist, and policy advisor — navigating the delicate intersection between government reform and private sector dynamism. Through this experience, one lesson has remained clear: the transformation of nations in the 21st Century demands a symbiotic relationship between the public and private spheres,” he noted.

The event was themed, “The Role of Public-Private Partnerships (PPPs) in Corporate Governance and Economic Development”.

He further stressed that no government, regardless of how visionary, can single-handedly deliver inclusive development; neither can the private sector thrive sustainably without an enabling state that provides policy clarity, ensures stability, and safeguards the public interest.

“The nexus of these two forces — when built on trust, transparency, and shared purpose — forms the bedrock of enduring prosperity,” he stressed.

PPPs as Catalysts for Modern Governance

Professor Appiah-Adu further explained that PPPs are not merely contractual arrangements for financing infrastructure but allow government to leverage private-sector innovation, efficiency, and capital — while maintaining regulatory oversight and public-interest safeguards.

For emerging economies such as Ghana, he said, PPPs provide a practical route to bridge the vast gap between national aspirations and the limits of public budgets.

On sectors where PPPs can accelerate development at a scale government alone cannot achieve, he mentioned energy, transport, healthcare, urban development, and digital infrastructure.

“They transform government from being the sole provider of public goods to becoming an enabler and facilitator of innovation,” he emphasised.

However, the Professor cautioned that while PPPs offers significant prospects, many have faltered due to weak foundations, poor contract design, design, limited institutional capacity, political discontinuity, and misaligned incentives.

“I have witnessed how even the most ambitious initiatives can falter when accountability mechanisms are inadequate, when public institutions lack the technical expertise to negotiate effectively, or when political transitions disrupt continuity,” he recounted.

Call for strong legal & institutional frameworks

Professor also proposed a predictable and transparent legal structures for PPPs; a competitive and impartial procurement processes; credible dispute-resolution systems; institutional capacity to design, evaluate, and monitor partnerships; and a digital systems for real-time project monitoring.

He further stressed that framework alone cannot guarantee success therefore the need to train civil servants in financial modelling, project appraisal, performance-based contracting and risk assessment.

Professor Appiah-Adu also underscored the need for a balanced risk allocation – he proposed construction risks for the private sector and Policy and regulatory risks for the government sector.

The Professor of Strategy, further highlighted transport and logistics (modernised ports, rehabilitated rail systems, efficient trade corridors), and healthcare and education (improved access through technology-led service delivery) as key sectors that PPPs could be leveraged for economic development — Including Urban infrastructure and housing, waste and environmental management and special economic zones and industrial parks.

Leadership, trust and integrity

Beyond technical qualifications, the Professor also emphasised on values: “Partnerships do not only thrive on contracts but flourish character as well.

He encouraged that public sectors demonstrate transparency, professionalism, and accountability while the public sector also bring innovation ethical conduct, and long-term commitment.

Professor Appiah-Adu concluded with a call to action, “Our shared progress depends not on competition between sectors but on their cooperation.”

The 10th anniversary of the Ghana Corporate Executives’ Awards celebrated outstanding executives whose innovation and leadership continue to influence Ghana’s development trajectory.

Anyako Electoral Area still without Assembly Member, concerns mount over EC’s delay

0

By Kekeli K. Blamey

Anlo-Afiadenyigba (V/R), Nov. 26, GNA – Concerns have been raised over the continuous absence of an elected assembly member for the Anyako Electoral Area in the Keta Municipality, following delays by the Electoral Commission (EC) to conduct a by-election to fill the vacancy.

Residents and stakeholders say the Electoral Area had been without representation for several months.

Mr Gilbert Korbla Keklie, a former elected member of the Keta Municipal Assembly and initiator of Ghana Community Legal Clinic Series Programme and social commentator, questioned what he described as the Commission’s “selective application” of electoral laws.

He argued that there was no legal requirement compelling the EC to compile a list of vacancies across multiple electoral areas before organising by-elections.

Mr Keklie noted that such an approach, if applied strictly, would imply that the EC must wait for multiple vacancies to occur before conducting by-elections even in cases of death or resignation, a situation he described as “illogical and impractical.”

Mr Keklie questioned why the Commission does not apply the same principle to parliamentary by-elections, where vacancies were filled promptly without waiting for additional constituencies to become vacant.

He expressed concern that the Commission’s posture could erode public confidence, adding that stakeholders were watching closely to see how the EC responded to recent orders issued by the Tamale High Court regarding electoral matters.

Mr  Keklie further argued that there is no law that EC must compile vacancies in other Electoral Areas before conducting a by-election.

“With that reasoning, it means that if an assembly member is dead, EC should wait and pray for more assembly members to die for them to compile the list and organise mass by-elections. This reasoning does not make sense.”

He posed questions to EC, demanding why the EC did not wait to compile lists of vacancies in Parliament of Ghana before conducting by-elections.

He expressed his frustrations questioning why the EC, an administrative body, was applying the laws selectively?

Some residents of Anyako have continuously appealed to the EC to expedite processes leading to the by-election to restore full representation and ensure the smooth functioning of local governance in the Keta Municipality.

Parliament approves VAT Tax Bill 2025

0

Parliament has approved the Value Added Tax(VAT) Bill 2025, aimed at undertaking comprehensive tax reforms to enhance clarity, consistency, and legal certainty in the country’s VAT regime.

The new bill seeks to replace the current flat-rate system with a single, coherent structure.

It also introduces a provision to increase the registration threshold for VAT-eligible businesses, a move expected to exempt many micro and small enterprises from VAT obligations.

However, debating the motion, the Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, cautioned that the revised VAT framework could impose additional taxes on businesses and place a additional burden on the general public.

The Deputy Finance Minister, Thomas Nyarko Ampem, however, rejected the claim, insisting that the new VAT framework will simplify compliance rather than impose additional tax burdens on businesses or the public.

Trade Policy shifts, Ghana’s key exports regain US market competitiveness

0

Roles

The United States’ official decision to lift the 15% tariffs on cocoa and other key agricultural exports from Ghana marks a significant turnaround in trade relations. Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa announced the reversal, which took effect on November 13, 2025, following a new Executive Order from President Donald Trump. This move, which exempts items like cocoa beans, cashew nuts, avocados, and pineapples, has major implications for the Ghanaian economy, U.S.-Ghana relations, and the broader African trade agenda.

Tariff Timeline and the Trade Deficit Rationale

The original tariff imposition followed a July 31, 2025, Executive Order by President Trump, which raised reciprocal tariffs on a number of countries, including Ghana, to 15%. This was part of a broader administration policy aimed at addressing what the U.S. government characterised as “large and persistent trade deficits” and a lack of reciprocity in trade relationships.

The President invoked the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) to impose these tariffs, a legal authority currently under Supreme Court review. The previous tariff move had greatly alarmed Ghana’s agricultural export sector. Deputy Trade Minister Sampson Ahi stated Ghana was “prepared to engage at the highest levels” to challenge what it deemed an unfair levy, noting that the U.S. does not produce cocoa domestically.

The decision to reverse the tariffs comes amid rising domestic pressure on U.S. consumer prices for certain foodstuffs, creating an economic justification for the policy shift. Significantly, the reversal also coincides with a recent cocoa glut that had driven down global spot prices. The 15% tariff on top of these already depressed prices had significantly squeezed the profit margins of U.S. importers and manufacturers, creating a powerful lobbying incentive for the White House to act.

Ghanaian Economy, Farmers, and the Average Consumer

The removal of the 15% tariff is an immense boost to Ghana’s export-driven economy. Cocoa is central to the nation’s foreign exchange earnings. With Ghana exporting an estimated 78,000 metric tons of cocoa beans annually to the U.S., and current spot prices around $5,300 per metric ton, the reversal is projected to generate an additional US$60 million (approximately GHS 667 million) in revenue each year.

For the average Ghanaian cocoa farmer, the tariff removal means their beans are immediately more competitive in the world’s leading market for chocolate and cocoa products. This should translate into stronger demand and better farmgate prices. A small-scale farmer from the Western Region, speaking to local media after the announcement, said, “This is good news for our families. Tariffs made the buyers hesitate, but now we can expect a better season.”

For businesses involved in the export of goods like mangoes, ginger, and peppers, the exemption will provide relief from substantial import duties, which is expected to promote growth in non-traditional exports and job creation. Daniel Amateye Anim-Prempeh, an Accra-based economist from the Policy Initiative for Economic Development (PIED), called it a “win-win situation for both countries,” adding that the cocoa sector, the backbone of Ghana’s agricultural economy, stands to gain the most.

The average Ghanaian consumer may also see a minor benefit through greater stability in the national currency, as increased foreign exchange earnings from cocoa and other exports help to strengthen the Ghanaian Cedi (GHS) and slow imported inflation.

US Business, Consumers, and Diplomatic Relations

From the American perspective, the decision is viewed as a strategic economic and diplomatic move. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent indicated the administration would soon announce a broad package of agricultural tariff cuts, stating, “You’re going to see some substantial announcements over the next couple of days in terms of things we don’t grow here in the United States, coffee being one of them.” This highlights the U.S. consumer benefit, as the policy helps reduce food inflation by lowering the cost of imported raw materials for manufacturers, like cocoa processors.

Tariff Reversal as a Diplomatic Lever

The tariff rollback reverses a period of strained U.S.-Ghana relations over trade and other issues. Notably, the move comes at a sensitive moment in Ghana–US relations, following several high-profile bilateral actions. Accra recently accepted dozens of deportees from the United States, exclusively West Africans, on what the government described as humanitarian grounds, despite domestic criticism over the arrangement. Furthermore, Washington also reversed its visa restrictions on Ghanaian travellers after months of dialogue.

This context suggests the trade resolution was part of a larger, multifaceted diplomatic effort to normalise and improve bilateral ties, with the tariff reversal acting as a key concession to build stronger, more stable relations.

The diplomatic linkage was all but confirmed by a senior State Department official, speaking anonymously, who stated, “Restoring favourable trade terms was essential to cementing the recent agreements on migration and travel. It was a package deal—a clear signal that Washington views Accra as a key, strategic partner in West Africa.

Foreign Affairs Minister Okudzeto Ablakwa stated, “Ghana welcomes this positive development from the US… Ghana and the USA will continue to forge closer and mutually beneficial relations.” This confirms the intention on both sides to use the trade resolution to build stronger, more stable bilateral ties.

The Africa-AfCFTA Angle, A Call for Self-Reliance

The initial imposition of the 15% tariff in July 2025 was widely seen by analysts as a “wake-up call for Africa more broadly,” underscoring the vulnerability of African economies reliant on exporting raw commodities. This vulnerability has spurred urgent calls for deeper regional trade integration under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).

While the tariff reversal is excellent news for Ghana, the broader lesson remains. Africa must prioritise value addition to its raw materials and intra-regional trade to build resilience against unilateral trade policy shifts by external partners. The ultimate goal is not just securing bilateral trade exemptions but achieving continental economic self-reliance to ensure future stability and prosperity.

NPP flagbearership race: Dr. Adutwum promises free university education

0

Flagbearer hopeful of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum has pledged to introduce free university education if elected by party delegates and subsequently by Ghanaians as President.

According to the former Education Minister, the policy is attainable, especially when Ghana has successfully implemented the Free Senior High School (SHS) programme, an initiative he described as even more expensive due to the additional cost of feeding students.

“If we can provide free education at the secondary level, where students are fed, why can’t we extend it to the tertiary level where students only pay academic fees?” he asked.

Addressing delegates at Effiduase as part of his Ashanti Regional campaign tour, Dr Adutwum said extending free education to the tertiary level would be a major priority under his administration.

He insisted that the NPP, having pioneered the Free SHS programme, must take the next bold step to make education fully accessible to all.

He noted that many beneficiaries of the Free SHS policy risk being unable to continue to university due to financial constraints, stressing the need for policy continuity to protect the country’s investment in second-cycle education.

Dr Adutwum further argued that failure by the NPP to introduce such an intervention could push young people towards the National Democratic Congress, which is currently paying first-year fees for students in public universities.

“As the party that boldly implemented Free SHS, a policy others doubted, we must again lead the way by committing more resources to build the human capital of this country,” he stated.

He explained that his passion for free university education was rooted in his personal experience of growing up in poverty as the son of a cocoa farmer.

These struggles, he said, shaped his commitment to champion pro-poor policies that could uplift vulnerable families.

“I am seeking your support to lead this country to implement bold, people-centred policies that will lift households out of poverty and drive sustainable development,” he told the delegates.

Dr Adutwum also revealed a set of welfare initiatives he intended to introduce to improve the livelihoods of party grassroots should he become the flagbearer and eventually President.

Stop using breast milk to treat eye infections – Optometrist warns

0

A leading optometrist in the Upper West Region, Dr. Zakaria Al-hassan Baluri, has cautioned parents and caregivers against the widespread practice of using breast milk to treat eye infections in children, stressing that it contains no antibiotics and may worsen the condition.

Speaking to the media after a tour of the new Bliss Eye Care office building at the Wa Municipality on Monday, November 24, 2025, Dr. Baluri revealed that many children are brought to the clinic with severe eye complications after parents attempt home remedies driven by long-held traditional beliefs.

He explained that misinformation and cultural practices continue to influence the habit of applying breast milk to children’s infected eyes.

“But we don’t know any antibiotic in breast milk. Most of what is happening to the children is due to infection, and breast milk has no antibiotics to treat it. So definitely, what are you putting in? You are doing nothing. Rather, it will cause more havoc,” he warned.

Dr. Baluri described the practice as one of the major challenges facing eye health in many communities, noting that it delays proper treatment and often leads to more serious medical consequences.

According to him, caregivers frequently rely on traditional remedies before seeking professional care, by which time infections may have spread or caused irreversible damage. He called for intensified public education to correct harmful beliefs and encourage early medical intervention.

He urged parents to seek help from qualified eye specialists whenever children exhibit signs such as redness, discharge, itching, or difficulty seeing.

“Early recognition and early treatment are key. The eye is delicate, and once damage is done, reversing it is often difficult,” he emphasised.

Dr. Baluri also highlighted the need for community-based sensitisation to dispel myths around eye care, pointing out that many people still attribute eye diseases to spiritual causes rather than medical conditions requiring professional treatment.

With cases of preventable eye infections on the rise, he appealed to health authorities, media actors, and community leaders to intensify awareness campaigns to protect children from practices that could threaten their eyesight.

Cocoa Cup Launveiled In Accra: New Global Tournament Aims To Link Youth Football With Sustainable Cocoa Production

0

Cocoa
Cocoa

The Ghana National Cocoa Farmers Association (GNACOFA), in collaboration with the Africa for Glory Agenda, on Wednesday, November 26, officially launched the maiden edition of the Cocoa Cup Soccer Tournament at the Accra International Press Centre — a groundbreaking international football competition that promises a global spectacle merging the passion of the sport with the urgent call for sustainable cocoa production.

Set to take place in Brazil in March 2027, the tournament will convene clubs representing both cocoa-producing and cocoa-consuming countries under the theme “Youth-Led Soccer for Sustainable Cocoa Production.”

The event brought together journalists, cocoa sector stakeholders, youth groups, and members of the Ghana National Cocoa Farmers Association (GNACOFA), with keynote speeches delivered by Daniel Nana Osei Ampratwum, Tournament Project Manager and CEO of the Africa for Glory Agenda, and Ing. Stephenson Anane Boateng, Acting Board Chairman of the Cocoa Cup and President of GNACOFA.

Football as a Tool for Cocoa Advocacy

Ampratwum said the Cocoa Cup was designed to harness football’s global influence to educate consumers, especially the youth, about cocoa’s origins, its economic value, and the importance of sustainable sourcing.

“Football presents an unmatched opportunity to leverage its popularity and broad appeal to connect with consumers,” he said. “This approach is expected to stimulate demand and strengthen support for cocoa farmers and the entire cocoa sector.”

He added that the tournament would highlight critical issues in the cocoa industry—including land reclamation, farmers’ pensions, and child labour—while promoting a “Green Earth” agenda.

Although Australia will not play in the maiden edition, it will join as an official observer. Other proposed observing nations include Canada, Nigeria, Cameroon, India, Singapore, Luxembourg, and additional eligible countries.

The participating clubs were selected based on their home countries, resulting

in a lineup of teams representing three cocoa-producing and four cocoa-consuming nations.

Brazil Set to Host Historic Inaugural Tournament

Ampratwum described Brazil as the ideal host, calling it a “boutique producer-consumer nation” with strong infrastructure and deep cultural ties to football.

He reflected on cocoa’s history—citing Tetteh Quarshie’s legendary introduction of cocoa to Ghana and Sir Gordon Guggisberg’s role in mechanizing production—lamenting that some children in cocoa-farming communities still grow up without ever tasting cocoa products.

“This is an unfortunate reality we seek to correct, however trivial it may appear,” he said.

The project, he emphasized, will support consumers as much as producers, ensuring access to healthier cocoa products and boosting public health awareness of cocoa’s nutritional value.

Playoffs to Begin in Ghana in 2026

The tournament’s road to Brazil will begin with continental playoffs. In Ghana, the first match is scheduled for February 1, 2026, featuring arch-rivals Asante Kotoko and Accra Hearts of Oak

at a venue yet to be confirmed.

A proposed Ivory Coast playoff between Africa Sports and ASEC Mimosas is slated for March 1, 2026. Additional playoff schedules for Asia, Europe, South America, and North America will be announced to stakeholders.

Ampratwum said organizers had received “optimistic” responses from African clubs and expressed gratitude for the support of Opemsuo FM and the Kessben Group of Companies.

“With grace, courage and unity of purpose, we are certain that our efforts will not be defeated by circumstance,” he said.

GNACOFA: Cocoa Farmers at the Heart of the Initiative

In his address, GNACOFA President Ing. Stephenson Anane Boateng said cocoa remains one of Ghana’s most important export pillars, supporting 800,000 cocoa farm owners, 700,000 sharecroppers, and thousands of workers across nine regions.

Cocoa contributes about US$2 billion in foreign exchange annually, he noted, underscoring its role in Ghana’s GDP and rural development.

Boateng highlighted GNACOFA’s mission to represent small-scale cocoa farmers and promote unity, access to credit, improved production, and development in farming communities. With nearly 800,000 members, the association has become a significant force in shaping cocoa policy.

Youth Engagement and a New Era for Cocoa Farming

A key component of the tournament, Boateng said, is youth involvement. Seminars, symposia, and curtain-raiser youth matches will accompany each playoff across participating countries to encourage succession planning in cocoa farming.

GNACOFA has formed its own football team—GNACOFA Stars—to attract young talent, create pathways into cocoa farming, and support youth already in the sector.

“We are confident that this initiative will usher in a new era where cocoa farmers receive the recognition they deserve,” he said. “GNACOFA remains ready to collaborate with the Government of Ghana and COCOBOD to ensure that the cocoa sector remains a beacon of pride and prosperity.”

A Vision for Farmers, Consumers, and the Future

Both speakers stressed that the Cocoa Cup is more than a football event—it is a social, economic, and cultural intervention aimed at protecting cocoa farmers’ livelihoods while promoting global appreciation of cocoa.

The initiative includes advocacy efforts, research-driven awareness campaigns, and policy engagement to improve industry practices and strengthen the cocoa value chain.

As the presser concluded, Ampratwum reaffirmed organizers’ commitment:
“Long live the cocoa economy. Long live cocoa. Long live the Cocoa Cup Soccer Tournament.”

“Some of the challenges I faced were me looking for a job after I graduated and the person I met wanted to have his way with me before giving me the job,” she said.

Highest Eri explained that many people assumed she lacked influential links, which made them feel entitled to exploit her.

“People think you don’t know anyone, to whom you know but since you don’t know anyone, they would want to take advantage,” she stated.

She recounted an incident where a media house was laying off workers and hiring new ones. After submitting her CV, the HR representative immediately made inappropriate advances.

I would never disrespect the Ga people – Highest Eri apologises over language comment

“I remember when one media house was laying people off and employing new people. I took my CV there and handed it over to the HR. He dropped it and asked me to call him at 7 p.m. I then asked him if they employ people at that time and he said I should just call him so we can talk,” she shared.

The situation became more revealing when he later invited her to meet him at a hotel.

“When he called me, he asked me to meet him at a hotel. I told him I didn’t know that now TV stations sleep with people before securing a job,” she said.

She emphasised that many young women face similar challenges, but knowing one’s value helps avoid falling victim.

“Some of the challenges are, you meet these people because they want to sleep with you. If you know your worth, you know what you’re capable of doing; you wouldn’t give them that chance,” she noted.

Highest Eri said she has never given in to such demands, despite receiving similar offers frequently.

“I’ve never been a victim even though I get that offer a lot. Even if I like the man, let me throw myself at you. When he makes it seem like I’m sleeping with him for a job, that wouldn’t happen,” she added.

Frustration is mounting among Ghanaian travellers after ITA Airways and KLM cancelled several flights, leaving passengers stranded at airports without adequate support or accommodation.

Hanson Dartey, scheduled to travel on KLM flight 590, described the experience as deeply frustrating.

“They keep on frustrating Ghanaians. You come here, they cancel the flight without proper notice… It’s very bad,” he said.

Another passenger, speaking anonymously, recounted a similar ordeal with an ITA Airways flight to Italy.

“They said the flight was cancelled, and the passenger has nowhere to sleep.

There’s no further information,” the passenger said.

Some affected travellers were even advised to call Italy or Spain to resolve their issues—despite it being outside office hours—leaving many stranded with limited options for accommodation.

Passengers are now calling for stronger accountability and better service from both airlines.

“We urge the Minister of Transport to ensure that flights operating to Ghana maintain proper standards and that Ghanaians enjoy the same rights as passengers elsewhere,” one passenger said.

The cancellation of KLM flight 590, which was scheduled to fly to Ghana, has raised additional concerns about potential technical issues, with some travellers urging a formal investigation to prevent possible accidents.

Reports have also highlighted unsatisfactory customer service from airline staff, described by some passengers as “unwelcome” or unhelpful.

Travellers are appealing to the Ghanaian government to intervene and ensure that airlines provide timely assistance, alternative arrangements, and proper communication in cases of flight cancellations.

Founder & CEO of Stratcomm Africa, Esther A. N. Cobbah, expressed her gratitude saying, “We dedicate this award to every gardener, youth innovator, exhibitor, and community member who believes in the power of green action. This recognition from IPR Ghana highlights the urgency of communication about environmental sustainability to ensure that different stakeholders own the responsibility and take the needed actions to help save our Earth,” she said.

Stratcomm Africa’s winning submission for the award drew on its flagship initiative, the Ghana Garden & Flower Movement (GGFM), and its signature event, the Ghana Garden and Flower Show (GGFS). These engagements are helping embed environmental consciousness in everyday life, especially among young people, households, and entrepreneurs.

GGFS 2024, with the theme, “GREENOVATION: Green the Nation, Feed the Nation, Grow the Nation”, emphasized environmental innovation as a driver of food security, youth empowerment, and economic development. Over eight days at the Efua Sutherland Children’s Park, Stratcomm Africa brought together over 100 exhibitors, and more than 30,000 participants – a record attendance and harnessed storytelling, theatre, youth engagement, and practical masterclasses to inspire behaviour change and climate action.

Kpandai NPP decries Tamale High Court ruling, calls it a miscarriage of justice

0

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Kpandai Constituency has expressed outrage and disappointment over the Tamale High Court’s decision to nullify the 2024 Kpandai parliamentary election results.

Addressing a press conference, the party’s supporters described the ruling as “deeply troubling” and “regrettable,” claiming it amounted to a miscarriage of justice.

They vowed to appeal the decision and urged their supporters to remain steadfast.

“The ruling handed down by the Tamale High Court judge in the case between Nsala and Hon. Matthew is not only deeply troubling but also deeply regrettable.

“Although we accept the ruling, we are compelled to express our profound disappointment and describe it as a miscarriage of justice,” Youth Organiser Joseph Kinyoban Ladur, who read the statement, said.

He alleged that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate, Mr Nsala, orchestrated the violence and destruction at the Constituency collation centre, and questioned the court’s decision to order a rerun of the entire constituency.

“It is worth noting that if not for the destruction orchestrated by our opponents at the Constituency collation centre, we wouldn’t have been here. This is evident in the video that captured them in the campaign vehicle of Hon. Nsala that conveyed them to the collation centre,” he claimed.

The Youth Organiser questioned why a rerun of the entire constituency was necessary when only 41 polling stations were disputed, and why a re-collation of those 41 polling stations could not have been done instead.

He warned that any bloodshed or violence resulting from the rerun would be the responsibility of the NDC’s Nsala and his allies.

He, however, expressed confidence in their candidate, Mr Matthew Nyindam, and vowed that they would protect the votes cast by the people of Kpandai.

“We are utterly convinced that the people of Kpandai have witnessed firsthand the selfless dedication and unwavering commitment of our leader, Hon. Matthew Nyindam, to the development of our constituency. They will not be swayed by empty promises or deceitful rhetoric,” the party said.

The NPP further urged all stakeholders to condemn the actions attributed to Mr Nsala and to respect the will of the people of Kpandai.

Guinea-Bissau President Umaro Sissoco Embaló arrested after disputed election

0

A faction of Guinea-Bissau’s military has arrested President Umaro Sissoco Embaló following rising tensions over the country’s yet-to-be-declared presidential election results.

Heavy political uncertainty has gripped Guinea-Bissau after soldiers stormed the presidential palace on Wednesday, arresting President Umaro Sissoco Embaló around midday. The dramatic development occurred just days after the 23 November presidential election, whose official results were expected on Thursday.

Embaló confirmed his own arrest in a message to Jeune Afrique, stating that he was taken from his office at the palace but insisting no physical violence was used against him. However, eyewitness accounts and security sources reported gunfire near the palace and around the national electoral commission’s premises earlier in the day.

Senior military and government figures also detained

The operation did not target the president alone. The Chief of Defence Staff, General Biague Na Ntan, his deputy, General Mamadou Touré, and Interior Minister Botché Candé were also detained by the same faction of the armed forces.

Embaló described the events as a “coup d’État”, accusing the head of the army’s land forces of leading the action against him.

Election results at the centre of tensions

Guinea-Bissau’s political temperature had already been rising before today’s arrest. Although the electoral commission had not released official results, Embaló’s camp claimed he had won the election with 65 percent of the vote, based on their own internal tally.

His main challenger, Fernando Dias da Costa—an emerging political force viewed as the election’s dark horse—also claimed victory. The competing declarations deepened uncertainty ahead of the official announcement scheduled for Thursday.

A country with a history of political instability

Guinea-Bissau has witnessed a series of coups, attempted coups, and military interventions since independence, and regional observers fear that today’s arrest could trigger another period of instability.

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and the African Union are expected to issue statements as the situation develops.

What next?

As of now, the president’s whereabouts remain unclear, and the chain of command within the armed forces appears fractured. With both camps claiming election victory and the military stepping directly into the political arena, the coming days will determine whether Guinea-Bissau moves toward mediation or deeper conflict.

Citi News will continue to monitor this developing story and provide updates as more details emerge.

By Kingsley Mamore,

Dambai (O/R), Nov 26, GNA-Mr. Gilbert Addai, a passionate local volunteer has launched a one-man clean-up crusade along the banks of River Oti, in a bold move to combat typhoid cases in Dambai.

Mr. Addai armed with shovels, gloves, brooms, and rakes kicked off his “Clean Oti, Save Lives” campaign, targeting hotspots along the river that runs through Dambai, the Oti Region’s capital.

The typhoid outbreak has been severe, with over 22,000 confirmed cases recorded this year by Health officials, and Dambai accounting for more than 12,000 cases.

Speaking to the Ghana News Agency (GNA), his motivation for the clean-up campaign stemmed from a sense of responsibility and love for his community.

“I grew up here, my family lives here, my friends live here, if I cannot protect my community, who will? Mr. Addai added.

He appealed for logistical support from benevolent associations, government agencies and individuals to continue his crusade.

The Ghana Health Service has been working to contain the typhoid cases in the area, but efforts such as Mr. Addai’s are crucial in preventing further spread of the disease.

BoG forecasts inflation to ease to 6-8% by end of 2025

Ghana's inflation eased to 8% in October 2025 Ghana’s inflation eased to 8% in October 2025

The Bank of Ghana (BoG) has projected that inflation will continue its downward trend and settle between 6-8 percent by the end of 2025.

Speaking at the 127th Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) press conference in Accra on November 26, 2025, Governor of the Bank, Dr Asiama said the steady decline in headline inflation, from 23.5 percent in January 2025 to the Bank’s central target of 8.0 percent in October [2025], reflects the effectiveness of current monetary and fiscal policies.

“The decline was broad-based, as both food and non-food inflation are currently in single digits, the first since July 2021,” he stated.

FULL TEXT: BoG lowers monetary policy rate from 21.5% to 18%

He attributed the sustained disinflation to the Bank’s tight monetary policy stance, sustained fiscal consolidation efforts, a stable currency, and relative improvements in food supply.

Dr Asiama also noted that the Bank’s core inflation measure, which excludes energy and utility prices, has declined, reflecting moderation in underlying inflationary pressures.

“Price expectations by consumers, businesses, and the banking sector for the next year signal well-anchored inflation expectations,” he added.

Eddie Murphy shares the three hit movies he wishes he never rejected

Eddie Murphy's career spans 50 years Eddie Murphy’s career spans 50 years

Award-winning actor and comedian Eddie Murphy has featured in many box office hit movies. Despite his accomplishments, the 56-year-old recently admitted that there were some movies he wished he had never rejected when the offers came.

Murphy touched on the topic during an interview with The Associated Press, and when he was asked about the movies he regrets declining.

“Yeah, there are a couple of movies. ‘Ghostbusters,’ I was supposed to do ‘Ghostbusters.’ Didn’t do that. And ‘Rush Hour.’ Didn’t do that. Oh, and ‘Who Framed Roger Rabbit.’ Those are my big three ‘wish I would have done’ movies,” Murphy revealed.

Asked what it was about those movies that made him wish he were a part of, The Nutty Professor star said, “They were huge, giant hits.” He added while laughing: “They were giant hit movies.”

“Well, with ‘Ghostbusters,’ I did ‘Beverly Hills Cop’ instead. So, it was like, it was do this or that, so it worked out cool,” Murphy also explained. “And ‘Who Framed Roger Rabbit’ just sounded ridiculous to me, and I passed on it. And, afterwards, I was like, ‘Oh that’s f—ing amazing.’”

Ghostbusters domestically raked in over $243 million at the box office when it was released in 1984, Fox News reported. A total of three Rush Hour movies were released, with the first and second projects respectively grossing over $200 million and 340 million worldwide. Rush Hour 3, on the other hand, grossed over $250 million worldwide. Who Framed Roger Rabbit also domestically raked in over $156 million.

Though Murphy turned down those projects, he still has several high-grossing movies to his name. They include the Shrek franchise, the Beverly Hills Cop series, Coming to America, The Nutty Professor, Dr Dolittle, Dreamgirls, among others.

Murphy’s new documentary, Being Eddie, was also recently released on Netflix. The documentary focuses on the veteran actor and comedian’s career. But in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Murphy revealed that the project wasn’t initially intended to be the kind of documentary that it ended up being.

“There were no guidelines,” Murphy said when he was asked what made him decide to do the documentary and if there were off-limits topics or guidelines he wanted to set.

“It wasn’t going to be this type of documentary. [When] it started out, I was going to do stand-up comedy again. In 2011, I stopped making movies for about six years. When I got off the couch, I was like, ‘Let’s do Dolemite [Is My Name], and go back to Saturday Night Live, and do stand-up. We were going to do this documentary just to show what it’s like to put a [stand-up] show together.”

He added, “Then COVID hit, and everything shut down. Afterwards, I was like, ‘I’m not sure if I want to do stand-up,’ because I was paranoid about COVID. We worked on this thing for five, six years, and now, coincidentally, it’s my 50th year in show-business, a milestone for anybody in any business.”

The Abene Council has petitioned the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohuno, to investigate what it calls unlawful and uncustomary actions by officers at the Kwahu Omanhene Palace in Abene on Monday, November 17, 2025.

The Council claims the early-morning raid brought public disgrace to the Abene Stool.

“Given the grave nature and the complete disregard for law and order… the arrest of the staff of the Palace and their detention, as well as the arrest of Daasebre Akuamoah Boateng III and the Kwahuhemaa, Kwahuman stands disgraced within the Institution of Chieftaincy,” the petition stated.

According to the Council, police officers allegedly fired gunshots, assaulted Palace staff and the Queenmother, and removed the number plates from the official Palace vehicle.

Daasebre Akuamoah Boateng III, who was in Accra at the time, rushed to Abene and witnessed the aftermath. When he questioned the police about their presence, he received no response and was subsequently arrested along with the Kwahuhemaa, his driver, and a Palace staff member. They were later released without charges.

The Council also urged authorities to grant “immediate supervised access” to the Omanhene, Kwahuhemaa, and staff to retrieve personal belongings, including money, bank cards, clothes, medication, and vehicles.

Professor Opoku-Agyemang underscored the strategic importance of processing more of Ghana’s cocoa locally to boost national revenue, enhance competitiveness, and position the country advantageously within emerging regional and global markets.

CPC applauded for share value increase

She noted with satisfaction that CPC has recorded a 100 per cent increase in share price over the last three months and indicated that the move meant a renewed investor confidence and a positive operational trajectory.

She added that the rising number of international visitors and prospective partners engaging with CPC reflects global recognition of the growing processing capacity.

The Vice President further encouraged CPC to intensify its marketing and distribution efforts, highlighting senior high schools as a significant yet untapped market that could promote local consumption and support youth nutrition.

She further emphasised that the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) provides a strong platform for CPC to expand its footprint across the continent as part of Ghana’s broader push for value addition and industrialisation.

Armed forces to set up permanent bases along rivers and forests to stop galamsey

0

The government will station armed personnel at permanent bases along rivers and forest reserves across Ghana as part of the campaign to stop illegal mining.

This is to ensure that illegal miners do not return to areas that have been cleared, the Minister for Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, has said.

Speaking in a television interview monitored by Graphic Online on Joy News on Tuesday [Nov 26, 2025], Mr Kwakye Ofosu said the move marks a shift from short raids to a permanent military presence on water bodies and protected forests.

“There is an effort to deploy armed men along all the rivers we have in Ghana and in the forests,” he said.

He added that the forces will have permanent bases so that illegal miners do not return after security teams clear them from an area.

Mr Ofosu said the plan was to have constant presence aimed at dealing with the cycle where miners resume operations soon after enforcement teams withdraw.

The government has allocated GH¢150 million to the fight against illegal in the 2026 budget.

This is triple the GH¢50 million provided in 2025 and higher than the GH¢2.8 million allocated in 2024.

Oforikrom MP criticises gov’t for meagre allocation to tourism, creative industry

0

By Godwill Arthur-Mensah, GNA

Accra, Nov. 25, GNA — Member of Parliament for Oforikrom, Mr Michael Kwasi Aidoo, has expressed dismay over what he described as the government’s misplaced priorities in the 2026 Budget Statement and Economic Policy of Government.

The lawmaker lamented that the Mahama-led government had cancelled flagship tourism and creative events introduced by the previous administration, such as the “December to Remember” which attracted tourists and promoted Ghana’s cultural heritage.

He said although the current government announced the “Blackstar Experience” to boost tourism in the country, nothing concrete has been done to sustain the initiative.

Speaking during parliamentary debates on the 2026 Budget on Tuesday, Mr Aidoo questioned why the tourism and creative industry was allocated a meagre GHS 250 million, while a larger allocation of GHS 290 million was earmarked for the purchase of sanitary pads.

The Oforikrom legislator argued that the tourism sector had the potential to generate significant revenue and boost Ghana’s global image.

Mr Aidoo accused the Mahama-led government of overburdening ordinary Ghanaians with increased taxes, citing a rise of 18.4 percent.

He contrasted this with the previous administration, which he said was servicing one billion cedis in energy legacy debts monthly, ensuring stable power supply.

He criticised the current government for persistent power outages, noting that the smart meters introduced by the Electricity Company of Ghana under the former administration had enabled efficient revenue collection for the power company.

According to him, these measures provided the foundation for a more reliable electricity system, which the present government had failed to maintain.

The MP’s criticism adds to growing debates over the 2026 Budget, with opposition voices questioning the government’s spending priorities and its impact on economic recovery.
