Kpandai re-run: Final gazette decides all – Dafeamekpor dismisses claims of late filing

0

Majority Chief Whip, Rockson-Nelson Etse Dafeamekpor, says the controversy over timelines in the Kpandai election petition is already settled by one decisive fact: only the final Gazette from the Electoral Commission (EC) holds legal weight.

Speaking on JoyNews’ PM Express on Tuesday, December 2, the South Dayi MP dismissed arguments that the petition challenging the 2024 parliamentary results was filed out of time.

He insisted the timelines could only be counted from the EC’s final consolidated Gazette, not any earlier administrative publication.

“We were watching time… we know our calculation, our maths is not that bad,” he said, stressing that the filing was done within the legal window once the correct Gazette date was applied.

The private legal practitioner explained that by January 24, when the EC issued the comprehensive Gazette for all 276 constituencies, the Commission was still finalising results in a number of outstanding seats.

“They could not have released a comprehensive Gazette notification covering all the seats at the time,” he said. “So this was the Gazette notification containing all the seats in parliament.”

According to him, this final document is what both the petitioners and the court relied on. “They brought the 24th December one. The Court rejected it,” he noted.

When asked on what grounds the court dismissed the earlier Gazette, Dafeamekpor said it was simple: “That was not the final Gazette notification from the EC. The EC testified that this is their final Gazette notification.”

Pressed further on how many Gazettes were issued before the final one, he said he could not confirm the number but stressed that, in law, it did not matter.

“Even if the EC released several Gazette notifications, the last in time will take precedence over all the previous. That is triat. That is law.”

COCOBOD cuts costs as GHC30bn debt mounts — Public Affairs Head

0

Head of Public Affairs at the Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD), Jerome K. Sane, says the institution has begun implementing cost-cutting measures as part of efforts to address its mounting debt of GHC30 billion.

In an interview on Citi Eyewitness News on Tuesday, December 2, he stressed that financial discipline has become central to COCOBOD’s operations, noting that the CEO and his deputies are leading the reform by cutting back on unnecessary travel.

He expressed optimism that with the right policies and programmes, COCOBOD can overcome its financial difficulties.

“Today, if you are to come to COCOBOD, there is a lot of discipline, financial discipline. We are not doing the very things that we were doing when we had money.

“Today at COCOBOD, the CEO and his Deputies have even cut some kind of unnecessary travel. Unless it is justified to ascertain that, it is imperative to the sustenance of the organisation. About 50% of foreign travels are off to save money,” he stated.

Meanwhile, the Industrial and Commercial Workers Union (ICU) has cautioned the government, insisting that the only way to prevent the collapse of Ghana’s cocoa sector is to immediately write off COCOBOD’s debt of over GHC30 billion.

Akufo-Addo gov’t enabled cheating to boost Free SHS – Pru East MP

0

The Member of Parliament for Pru East, Emmanuel Boam, has accused the former Akufo-Addo administration of deliberately creating conditions that enabled widespread examination malpractices during the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), allegedly to boost pass rates under the Free Senior High School (Free SHS) policy.

Speaking to journalists on Tuesday, December 2, 2025, the MP claimed that the weakened examination environment under the previous government opened avenues for students to pay “examination support levies” that facilitated cheating, while some candidates were reportedly allowed to enter examination halls with mobile phones.

According to Mr. Boam, these practices artificially inflated WASSCE performance figures, creating the impression that the Free SHS policy had achieved remarkable academic outcomes.

“There hasn’t been any organised and well-orchestrated examination malpractice than what we saw under the past government,” he said. “It was properly coordinated between institutions that were compelled to align.”

He questioned the practice of evaluating headteachers based solely on WASSCE performance despite inadequate logistical and infrastructural support from the state.

“How do you tie the rating of schools to WASSCE results and threaten headteachers with removal when they lack the basic resources to run their institutions?” he asked.

Mr. Boam further alleged that students were encouraged to contribute to an “examination support levy,” claiming that some teachers collected money and collaborated with others to solve exam questions and pass them to invigilators for distribution to candidates.

“The system was so compromised that students were asked to pay money for examination support, and you had groups of teachers solving questions elsewhere and passing them on to invigilators,” he alleged.

The MP has called on the current Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, to establish a commission of enquiry to investigate the alleged malpractices and their impact on the integrity of Ghana’s education system.

Tension mounts in Tamale after IGP’s operation team allegedly shoots a man to dead

0

A special police team deployed by the IGP reportedly shot dead a 40-year-old man A special police team deployed by the IGP reportedly shot dead a 40-year-old man

Tension is reported to have risen in Tamale area after a man believed to be in his early forties was shot dead during an operation by a special police team deployed by the Inspector General of Police to clamp down on criminal activity in the area.

According to a December 2, 2025 report by 3news.com indicate that Tamale Metropolitan Chief Executive, Abu Takoro, is worried that although the security crackdown has had some positive impacts, recent excesses are putting the city’s stability at risk. He has called for an independent and thorough probe into the incident.

Police crack down on drug peddling in Tamale, 27 in custody

The shooting occurred during a swoop at the Poloya Fong forest enclave, where members of the Special Operations Team reportedly opened fire.

The article indicated that witnesses told 3news that the victim, said to be a passerby on a motorbike, tried to flee after sporadic gunshots rang out, only to be struck by what they believe was a stray bullet and he died on the spot.

Takoro, who also chairs the Metropolitan Security Committee (MUSEC), described the chain of events as regrettable.

“We welcomed the special team when they arrived, and their presence has contributed positively. But burning tricycles at Nobisco forest and the shooting of this young man are deeply troubling,” he said, adding that MUSEC has already forwarded its recommendations to the IGP.

The Northern Regional Police Command has acknowledged the death.

In a statement signed by its Public Relations Officer, Chief Inspector Alhassan Lukman, the command said officers acted in self-defence after coming under fire from suspected criminals during the December 1, 2025, operation.

According to the statement, the deceased sustained gunshot injuries during the exchange and was confirmed dead afterward.

His body has been sent to the Tamale Teaching Hospital for an autopsy and further investigations.

This incident follows another operation on November 27, when the IGP’s team raided the Nobisco forest, torching tricycles and motorbikes believed to be used by suspected drug traffickers.

‘Illegal and ridiculous’ – Marc Brys blasts Samuel Eto’o for ousting him before AFCON 2025

0

Eto'o (L) sacked Marc Brys (R) from his position as coach of Cameroon Eto’o (L) sacked Marc Brys (R) from his position as coach of Cameroon

Marc Brys has accused Samuel Eto’o of exploiting his renewed mandate at the Cameroonian Football Federation to orchestrate what he calls an “illegal and ridiculous” move to dismiss him as Cameroon’s head coach.

The Belgian technician spoke for the first time since his removal, framing the federation president’s actions as a targeted effort to force him out before the continental tournament.

His comments followed a dramatic announcement by Fecafoot that ended his tenure just 20 days before AFCON 2025 kicks off, deepening tensions between the federation and the Ministry of Sports, whose backing facilitated his appointment earlier this year.

Brys said the timing and manner of his dismissal reinforced his belief that Eto’o had long planned his exit, especially after Cameroon’s World Cup playoff failure last month intensified pressure on the federation leadership.

“Recently, the mandate of the great president Samuel Eto’o was extended for four more years. In fact, there wasn’t even another candidate,” he said.

“In my view, he drew strength from this situation to carry out an illegal and ridiculous coup.”

“He removed all positions at the Ministry of Sports, including the technical staff of the national team, and filled them with people of his choosing. Firing everyone without valid reason seems completely illegal to me.

“You can’t act like this without legitimate grounds. Right before a major tournament for our national team, he appoints people who are not prepared. They’re being thrown to the wolves. This doesn’t happen anywhere else in the world.”

Speaking later to VTM, Brys signalled he had accepted the outcome, though he maintained that the environment created by Fecafoot had made the job untenable.

“Samuel Eto’o’s goal has always been to get rid of me. From the very first minute, he insulted me and I responded. I’ve had enough, there’s too much negativity to do a good job.”

His exit ends a turbulent relationship marked by institutional rivalry and public disputes, and hands David Pagou responsibility for guiding the Indomitable Lions at AFCON in Morocco.

Nigeria’s oil content board unveils $100m equity fund to support local producers

0

The board is also expected to introduce a compliance certificate The board is also expected to introduce a compliance certificate

Nigeria’s oil and gas content regulator on Tuesday announced a $100 million equity investment scheme to boost indigenous participation in the energy sector and said it would tighten compliance rules from next year.

Felix Ogbe, executive secretary of the Nigerian Content Development and Monitoring Board (NCDMB), told the Practical Nigerian Content Forum that the fund, launched in partnership with the Bank of Industry, would provide equity financing to high-growth local energy service firms.

The board will also introduce a compliance certificate from January 1, 2026, confirming companies’ adherence to a mandatory 1% remittance obligation, Ogbe said. The certificate will be required for permits and approvals.

Ogbe said Nigerian content levels in monitored projects rose to 61% from 56% last year, citing major projects such as NLNG Train 7, NNPC’s AKK pipeline and TotalEnergies’ Ubeta gas development.

Other initiatives include a technology challenge in early 2026, expanded training programs for oilfield skills, and measures to curb fraudulent applications for local content certificates.

“The work before us is significant, but so is the opportunity,” Ogbe said. “Nigerian content is key to national development and industrialisation.”

We were within time – Dafeamekpor defends NDC’s case as Kpandai battle hits Supreme Court

0

Majority Chief Whip, Rockson-Nelson Etse Dafeamekpor, has defended the timing of the NDC’s election petition in the Kpandai parliamentary dispute.

The South Dayi MP insists that the case was filed within the legally required period.

Speaking on Joy News’ PM Express on Tuesday, he challenged the core argument behind NPP MP Mathew Nyindam’s application before the Supreme Court.

Mr Nyindam claims the High Court lacked jurisdiction because the petition was filed outside the statutory window.

But Dafeamekpor rejected that claim.

The private legal practitioner said the petitioners acted within the correct timeline and relied on the Electoral Commission’s final Gazette, not earlier publications.

“We were within time,” he stressed. “We know our calculation, our maths is not that bad.”

He explained that by January 24, the Electoral Commission had not completed work on all the constituencies that were still being contested.

For that reason, a full Gazette covering all 276 seats had not yet been issued. He said that only the final Gazette can be used in law.

“They brought the 24th December one. The court rejected it,” he said.

He stated that the court dismissed the earlier Gazette because it was not the EC’s last official publication.

The South Dayi said the EC made this clear when it appeared before the court. “The EC testified that this is their final Gazette notification,” he noted.

When asked how many Gazettes the EC released before the final one, he said he could not tell the exact number. But he insisted that the principle remains the same.

“Even if the EC releases several Gazette notifications, the last in time will take precedence over all the previous. That is the law.”

The Kpandai seat case has reached the Supreme Court after the High Court in Tamale annulled Nyindam’s 2024 parliamentary victory and ordered a rerun.

Mr Nyindam is seeking to overturn that ruling, arguing that the court acted outside its jurisdiction because the petition was supposedly filed late.

Mr Dafeamekpor disagrees and says the High Court acted correctly because the petition relied on the only Gazette that holds legal weight.

He maintained that the NDC’s position is grounded in clear constitutional procedure and that the facts show the petition was properly lodged.

For him, the Supreme Court challenge does not change the essential point. “We were within time,” he insisted.

Int. Friendly: Lioness of England keeps momentum going as they beat Black Queens of Ghana on Tuesday night

0

The Lioness of England wrapped up 2025 with a 2-0 win over the Black Queens of Ghana in an international friendly match at St Mary’s Stadium in Southampton on Tuesday. Lucia Kendall scored her first senior international goal in the 6th minute, and Alessia Russo sealed the victory with a penalty in the 95th minute.

The match marked the first-ever meeting between the two nations, with England dominating possession and creating several scoring opportunities.

The win extends England’s unbeaten run against African opposition, with their last loss being a 3-0 defeat to Nigeria in 2004.

Ghana coach Kim Lars Bjorkegren named Goalkeeper Cynthia Konlan Fiindib in post with captain Portia Boakye and Susan Ama Duah leading a defensive setup.

Benedicte Simon, made her Black Queens debut, slotting into the backline for her first appearance in Ghana’s colours alongside Comfort Yeboah, Portia Boakye and Susan Duah.

The midfield featured the industrious trio of Jennifer Cudjoe, Stella Nyamekye and Grace Asantewaa as Alice Kusi, Chantelle Boye-Hlorkah and Doris Boaduwaa played upfront.

Kendall’s goal was her first senior international goal, and she expressed her joy, saying, “It felt like it was written for me to score today… It was a really special moment for me.”

England captain Alessia Russo also praised Ghana’s performance, stating, “Ghana provided the type of test we wanted… We want to test ourselves against different playing styles, and we definitely got that tonight”.

This friendly match marks England’s final game of 2025, and they will now focus on their qualifying campaign for the 2027 World Cup, as Ghana also shifts attention to the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.

The Black Queens will pick a lot of positive lessons from the match ahead of the 2026 CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.

Transport Ministry dismisses claims of GHC10m overspending

0

The Ministry of Transport has rejected claims by the Minority in Parliament that it overspent its 2025 capital expenditure by nearly GHC10 million.

In a clarification to the media, the Ministry said the funds cited by the Minority were approved by the Ministry of Finance and used to service loans contracted under the Akufo-Addo administration for the construction of Ghana Maritime Authority (GMA) office complexes in Tema, Accra, and Takoradi.

Transport Minister Joseph Nikpe Bukari insisted that the Ministry acted lawfully and did not violate the Public Financial Management Act.

“The Ghana Maritime Authority in 2021-2022 contracted some loans from Ecobank and other financial institutions, but the repayment wasn’t catered for in the budget. So the Ghana Maritime Authority wrote to me asking me to do the same to the Minister for Finance to allow us to service the loan that they contracted.

“The loan that they took to build the Tema office block, the Accra office, and the Takoradi office. So we were rather making provisions to continue with the construction of the project that they took money for and couldn’t finish.”

He stressed that the allegations of overspending were baseless.

“It is not that we overspend. In any case, if you are not approved for any amount of money, you don’t have it in the first place. So how do you overspend? It was within our budget, and the Public Financial Management Act section 32 allows any other spending officer to write to the Minister of Finance to make a payment for you to cater for your daily operations.”

80% of doctors posted to Upper West didn’t show up for duty

Dr Josephat Nyuzaghl, Upper West Regional Director of Health Services Dr Josephat Nyuzaghl, Upper West Regional Director of Health Services

The Upper West Regional Health Administration has reported that about 80% of doctors allocated to the region for the 2025/2026 service period did not report to duty.

The administration said 25 out of the 32 doctors allocated to the region not accepting to the posting have left a huge gap in the medical workforce.

Dr Josephat Nyuzaghl, the Upper West Regional Director of Health Services, bemoaned the development, forecasting it would have a “huge negative impact” on the quality of healthcare available to a region with nearly one million residents.

JoyNews reports that there are only 55 active medical doctors in the region, meaning each has to attend to a staggering 18,181 patients.

The hope was the arrival of new doctors would improve the situation.

Dr Nyuzaghl said the regional health directorate was actively involved in pleading with and pursuing newly posted doctors to come and help serve the region.

The Enduring Allure of the Single Shoulder Silhouette

0

Fashion is a language of subtle storytelling, and few design elements speak as powerfully—or as elegantly—as the single shoulder silhouette. Timeless yet continually reinvented, this asymmetrical style has secured its place in the fashion canon for centuries. From ancient Grecian drapery to contemporary red-carpet statements, the single shoulder look embodies a balance of grace, boldness, and architectural intrigue.

Part of its enduring appeal lies in its ability to highlight the natural lines of the body. By exposing just one shoulder, designers create a focal point that feels both sensual and sophisticated. This flirtation with asymmetry draws the eye upward, elongating the neckline while framing the collarbone—an area often associated with quiet elegance. The result is a design that feels alluring without being overt, confident without being loud.

Another reason the single shoulder silhouette remains a favorite is its versatility. It effortlessly adapts to a wide range of styles and fabrics: fluid chiffon for ethereal evening gowns, sculpted crepe for modern bridal wear, or ribbed knits for casual daytime looks. It can be minimalistic or embellished, structured or soft, making it suitable for any occasion and any personal aesthetic. Designers frequently revisit this silhouette because it offers limitless opportunities for reinvention.

Culturally, the single shoulder has also become a symbol of empowerment. It suggests a woman in control—bold enough to embrace asymmetry, assured enough to stand out. Its dramatic line creates movement and presence, allowing the wearer to command attention as she enters a room.

Ultimately, the single shoulder silhouette endures because it captures the magic of contrast: covered and uncovered, classic and contemporary, simple and striking. It is a reminder that sometimes the most captivating statements in fashion are made not by excess, but by the artful reveal of just one elegant line.

Thousands of rounds of German army ammunition stolen from lorry

0

A shipment of German ammunition has been stolen from a delivery lorry in the eastern town of Burg, the country’s defence ministry has said.

Speaking to Germany’s DPA news agency, officials did not specify how much was taken. However, other reports cited a defence spokesperson as saying it was close to 20,000 rounds.

The theft is thought to have taken place after the driver for a civilian transport company – contracted by the military – left his truck in an unguarded parking lot overnight on 25 November.

The next day, when the delivery arrived at the nearby Clausewitz Barracks, the ammunition was found to be missing. The army has launched an investigation alongside police.

Der Spiegel, among other German outlets, reported that the shipment contained 10,000 rounds of live ammunition for pistols, 9,900 rounds of blank bullets for assault rifles, and smoke grenades.

Authorities have not confirmed whether anyone has been arrested or identified in connection with the incident, which has prompted security concerns around who may acquire the lost supplies.

“We take the theft very seriously – this kind of ammunition must not fall into the wrong hands,” the defence ministry told German media.

A focal point of the Bundeswehr (German army)’s investigation will be why the driver failed to identify a safe location for the stop, according to Germany’s public broadcaster MDR.

It reports that there is a special hotline available to drivers who need similar assistance and said the armed forces can provide an escort if required.

The broadcaster said the driver left the vehicle in an unguarded parking lot and spent the night in a nearby hotel.

This is the latest in a series of similar incidents in the the Saxony-Anhalt region.

In August, local police in Bernburg reported 90 rounds of ammunition missing. Weeks earlier, officers in Eisleben reported they had lost 180 rounds.

No immediate connection has been made between the cases.

Two occupants of the truck sustained serious injuries and were rushed to the hospital before the rescue team arrived. Both vehicles were extensively damaged, with the truck veering off the road into a ditch.

The GNFS is urging motorists to avoid wrongful overtaking and adhere strictly to road safety regulations to prevent similar accidents.

The incident was reported and filed by the Ashanti Regional Public Relations Office. For further information, the public may contact the Ashanti Regional PRO, DO II Peter Addai, on 0243543080.

US pauses all immigration applications from 19 non-European countries

0

The Trump administration on Tuesday said it paused all immigration applications, including green card and U.S. citizenship processing, filed by immigrants from 19 non-European countries, citing concerns over national security and public safety.

The pause applies to people from 19 countries that were already subjected to a partial travel ban in June, placing further restrictions on immigration – a core feature of U.S. President Donald Trump’s political platform.

The list of countries includes Afghanistan and Somalia.

The official memorandum outlining the new policy cites the attack on U.S. National Guard members in Washington last week, in which an Afghan man has been arrested as a suspect. One member of the National Guard was killed, and another was critically wounded in the shooting.

Trump has also stepped up his rhetoric against Somalis in recent days, calling them “garbage” and saying “we don’t want them in our country.”

Since returning to the office in January, Trump has aggressively prioritised immigration enforcement, sending federal agents to major U.S. cities and turning away asylum seekers at the U.S.-Mexico border. His administration has frequently highlighted the deportation push, but until now it has put less emphasis on efforts to reshape legal immigration.

The flurry of promised restrictions since the attack on National Guard members suggests an increased focus on legal immigration framed around protecting national security and casting blame on former President Joe Biden for his policies.

The list of countries targeted in Wednesday’s memorandum includes Afghanistan, Burma, Chad, the Republic of the Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Haiti, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan and Yemen, which were subjected to the most severe immigration restrictions in June, including a full suspension on entries with a few exceptions.

Others on the list of 19 countries, which were subjected to partial restrictions in June, are Burundi, Cuba, Laos, Sierra Leone, Togo, Turkmenistan and Venezuela.

The new policy places a hold on pending applications and mandates that all immigrants from the list of countries “undergo a thorough re-review process, including a potential interview and, if necessary, a re-interview, to fully assess all national security and public safety threats.”

The memorandum cited several recent crimes suspected to have been committed by immigrants, including the National Guard attack.

Sharvari Dalal-Dheini, senior director of government relations for the American Immigration Lawyers Association, said the organisation had received reports of cancelled oath ceremonies, naturalisation interviews and adjustment of status interviews for individuals from countries listed on the travel ban.

2face Idibia’s ex-manager, Kaka Igbokwe confirms singer was arrested in UK

2face Idibia is a Nigerian music legend, 2face Idibia is a Nigerian music legend,

Kaka Igbokwe, a former manager of Nigerian music legend, Innocent Idibia also known as 2face, has confirmed that the singer was indeed arrested in London, UK following a heated altercation with his pregnant wife, Natasha Osawaru.

2face travelled to the UK with his new wife for a concert tour, but failed to show up at a scheduled show on October 2, 2025.

His absence came amid rumours that he had been arrested after a fight with Natasha, who is also a lawmaker in Edo State House of Assembly, at the airport.

Kaka, who is the son of the late Nigerian music legend, Christy Essien-Igbokwe, confirmed the incident while making an appearance on Daddy Freeze’s Instagram Live session, yesterday evening.

According to Kaka, “everything you heard about the couple’s face-off was true.”

Narrating how the altercation happened, Kaka who was part of the London team, and was on the same flight with them, said Natasha got upset when she felt 2face abandoned her after they landed at the airport and strolled away with fans who ushered him into a shop.

However, when the, “African Queen” crooner realised that Natasha was left behind, he hurriedly ran back to her as she lashed out at him, leading to his being arrested and handcuffed.

The video of the arrest, which was posted by blogger Tosin Silverdam on TikTok on December 1, 2025, sparked fresh debate online.

Former Deputy PRO at the MoE attributes ‘terrible’ 2025 WASSCE performance to NDC’s incompetence

0

Yaw Opoku Mensah, the former Deputy Public Relations Officer for the Ministry of Education Yaw Opoku Mensah, the former Deputy Public Relations Officer for the Ministry of Education

Yaw Opoku Mensah, the former Deputy Public Relations Officer for the Ministry of Education, has attributed the “terrible performance” of students in the 2025 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) to the alleged incompetence of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC).

Mensah argued that the current administration has demonstrated a refusal to continue the successful initiatives started by its predecessor.

He specifically highlighted that the previous government, led by former Education Minister Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum, implemented targeted programmes designed to thoroughly prepare students before they sat for their final examinations.

Furthermore, Yaw Opoku Mensah reiterated his assertion that the poor performance is intrinsically linked to management issues within the Ghana Education Service (GES).

He cited the alleged cancellation of teacher allowances as a key factor that negatively impacted teacher motivation, consequently harming student performance.

He stated that the government must accept responsibility for the outcome and immediately introduce effective measures to address the challenge instead of resorting to making excuses.

Speaking on Nyankonton Mu Nsem on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM, he stated, “This government is currently in charge, yet they have failed to deliver.

“This shows that if you rely on propaganda to win political power, you will inevitably be exposed. This administration has chosen to politicise our education sector and now we are witnessing serious failures in the WASSCE. It was crucial for the government to have reached out to the previous administration to understand how we achieved our success.”

He subsequently advised the current Education Minister, Haruna Iddrisu, to seek counsel from his immediate predecessor, Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum, on the strategies used to achieve better WASSCE results during the previous term.

Mensah concluded with a strong assertion, “If Haruna Iddrisu chooses to fail at the Education Ministry, he certainly will but if he wants to succeed, he knows what must be done. He should not allow political propaganda to cloud his judgement when he has the option to reach out to Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum for support.”

Weija to experience 12hr break in water supply

GWCL has warned that the line could collapse entirely if the defect was not fixed immediately GWCL has warned that the line could collapse entirely if the defect was not fixed immediately

The Management of Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL), Accra West, has announced a temporary shutdown of water production at the Weija Treatment Plant to enable urgent repairs on a major faulty transmission line.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, December 2, 2025, the company revealed that one of the primary pipelines transporting treated water to the western parts of Accra had developed serious perforations.

GWCL warned that the line could collapse entirely if the defect was not fixed immediately, prompting the scheduled shutdown.

The repair works are set for Thursday, December 4, from 6 AM. to 6 PM, and will result in a 12-hour interruption in water supply to several heavily populated communities.

Areas expected to be affected include Korle-Bu, Dansoman, Mamprobi, parts of Weija, Gbawe, Malam, Anyaa, Kwashieman, Ablekuma, Darkuman, Kaneshie, Tesano, Odorkor, Sowutuom, Lapaz, parts of Achimota, the North Industrial Area, and surrounding communities.

GWCL assured residents that production would resume immediately after the repair work was completed.

The company has encouraged households and businesses in the affected areas to store enough water ahead of the shutdown.

Ghana were strong in the duels

Sarina Wiegman is the manager of England's women team Sarina Wiegman is the manager of England’s women team

England manager Sarina Wiegman says Ghana provided a strong physical contest during the December 2, 2025, 2-0 friendly win at St Mary’s Stadium, as the European champions closed out the year on a positive note.

Speaking to ITV after the match, Wiegman admitted England could have scored more, but highlighted the strength of Ghana’s duels in key areas of the pitch.

“Ghana were strong in the duels and we wanted runs in the half spaces and get numbers in the box,” she said. “We had some big opportunities. We weren’t that lucky at moments either.”

England created a number of chances, hitting the woodwork four times, but were made to work for their breakthrough. Lucia Kendall opened the scoring after six minutes, with substitute Alessia Russo adding a stoppage-time penalty.

Wiegman also noted that improving the connection in attack remains a focus, despite another dominant showing.

“A lot of other players, and we know as individuals they are really good, but we have to make these connections again,” she added. “I hoped we would score more. If we had taken the chances better, it would have been more than this.”

The Ghana Chamber of Mines has expressed deep concern over a one-week ultimatum issued by the Artisanal Small-Scale Miners Association (ASSMA) in Obuasi to the government and AngloGold Ashanti Limited (Ghana), describing the threat as a risk to peace and stability in the mining sector.

In a statement issued, the chamber clarified that security operations at the Obuasi mine were carried out by state security officials under the mandate of the National Security Council, not private agents directed by AGAG management.

The chamber also refuted claims that AGAG had refused to release land for small-scale mining, noting that the company had voluntarily relinquished about 60% of its original concession to the government to support community development, and regulated small-scale mining.

Highlighting the socio-economic contributions of the mine, the chamber noted that AGAG continued to invest in education, healthcare, and infrastructure through its 10-year socio-economic development plan and the Obuasi Community Trust Fund.

The chamber urged ASSMA to engage constructively through established platforms, including the Joint Working Group and the Ghana National Association of Small-Scale Miners (GNASSM), rather than issuing ultimatums via the media.

Additionally, the chamber called on government authorities to treat the threats as a credible security matter and take lawful measures to protect lives and property.

Ghana and Wales agree strategic football partnership – Ghana Latest Football News, Live Scores, Results

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) and the Football Association of Wales (FAW) have agreed on a new strategic partnership aimed at strengthening coach development, sharing football knowledge and exploring long-term avenues of cooperation between both nations.

The agreement was reached during high-level discussions at the FAW’s headquarters in Hensol, where a senior GFA delegation led by President Kurt Okraku met FAW Chief Executive Officer Noel Mooney and Chief Football Officer Dr David Adams.

A key outcome of the talks is a programme designed to enhance Ghana’s coaching standards through access to the FAW’s respected coach education pathway.

Through this initiative, a group of carefully selected Ghanaian coaches from the national development structure will travel to Wales in 2026 to begin their advancement under top-level Welsh coaching expertise. The move is expected to strengthen grassroots development and positively influence player performance in the coming years.

The collaboration also includes exploring opportunities for international fixtures between youth and senior teams of both countries. With Ghana now qualified for the FIFA World Cup 2026, the FAW believes such engagements could provide mutual competitive advantages and increase exposure to different football styles.

The agreement reflects a shared belief that football associations thrive when they collaborate, exchange knowledge and create pathways for young athletes to develop beyond their borders. It also highlights a growing relationship between two football institutions committed to using education and innovation as tools to improve their national game.

Diddy hits out at ‘shameful’ and ‘illegal’ documentary

Sean 'Diddy' Combs is an American former rapper, record producer, and record executive Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs is an American former rapper, record producer, and record executive

Lawyers for Sean “Diddy” Combs have hit out at a new Netflix documentary produced by rapper 50 Cent, which they say is “a shameful hit piece” that “relied on stolen footage”.

The four-part documentary, titled Sean Combs: The Reckoning, was released on Tuesday and is billed as a “staggering examination” of the hip-hop mogul, who was convicted on prostitution-related charges earlier this year.

It includes what Netflix described as “explosive” footage of Combs filmed in the days before his arrest, including a phone conversation with his lawyers.

The director said she obtained the footage legally, but Combs’ spokesman said it was “fundamentally unfair, and illegal” to use his private footage.

He also said it was “staggering” that Netflix had given creative control to 50 Cent, who he described as “a longtime adversary with a personal vendetta”.

“Netflix is plainly desperate to sensationalise every minute of Combs’s life, without regard for truth, in order to capitalise on a never-ending media frenzy,” the statement said.

“If Netflix cared about truth or about Combs’s legal rights, it would not be ripping private footage out of context – including conversations with his lawyers that were never intended for public viewing. No rights in that material were ever transferred to Netflix or any third party.”

The statement added: “For Netflix to give his life story to someone who has publicly attacked him for decades feels like an unnecessary and deeply personal affront. At minimum, he expected fairness from people he respected.”

The documentary opens with footage of Combs in a hotel room six days before arrest in September 2024, talking on the phone to attorney Marc Agnifilo and telling him he wants to “fight for my life”.

Pushing Agnifilo to have a more upfront media strategy to protest his innocence, Combs told him: “We have to find somebody that’ll work with us. It has to be somebody that has dealt in the dirtiest of dirtiest of dirty business of [the] media and propaganda.”

At another point, viewers see Combs talking to his son Justin on the phone five days before his arrest. “God told me to do nothing… [but] other people need to do something ’cause this is ridiculous,” he said in the clip.

Combs’ spokesman said the documentary contained footage that was “never authorised for release”.

“As Netflix and CEO Ted Sarandos know, Combs has been amassing footage since he was 19 to tell his own story, in his own way. It is fundamentally unfair, and illegal, for Netflix to misappropriate that work.”

Netflix has not responded to a request for a response but pointed US media to comments it has published from the documentary’s director Alexandria Stapleton.

“It came to us, we obtained the footage legally and have the necessary rights,” she said. “We moved heaven and earth to keep the film-maker’s identity confidential.”

The documentary is executive produced by Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson, whose long-running feud with Combs stretches back two decades.

Jackson told ABC News’ Good Morning America on Monday: “If I didn’t say anything, you would interpret it as that hip-hop is fine with his behaviours. There’s no-one else being vocal.”

The documentary covers Combs’ career as one of the most powerful men in hip-hop, and includes allegations that he was involved in the murder of rapper Tupac Shakur in 1996.

It features tapes of a police interview in which former gang member Duane “Keffe D” Davis claims that Combs offered him $1m (£769,000) for a hit on Shakur.

Davis is set to stand trial for Shakur’s murder in 2026. He now says his proffer agreement with police, under which he agreed to tell them what he knew but it couldn’t be used against him in court, was given under duress, according to Netflix.

The programme also includes Kirk Burrowes, who co-founded Bad Boy Entertainment with Combs, claiming that he believes Combs “had a lot to do with the death of Tupac”.

Combs has always denied any involvement in Shakur’s death.

The documentary also features further claims of violence and threats, many of which have previously been made public in dozens of lawsuits, including alleged abuse against former girlfriend Cassie, which ended in a settlement.

Combs has previously denied the complaints, calling them “sickening” and “full of lies”.

In a media statement earlier this year, his lawyers said “anyone can file a lawsuit”, adding: “No matter how many lawsuits are filed it won’t change the fact that Combs has never sexually assaulted or sex trafficked anyone – man or woman, adult or minor.”

The documentary also includes interviews with two jurors from Combs’ trial.

In July, he was convicted on two charges of transportation to engage in prostitution but found not guilty of the most serious charges – racketeering conspiracy and sex trafficking of two ex-girlfriends.

He is now serving a 50-month prison sentence and has said he will appeal.

PURC says, electricity and water tarrifs to go up on Jan 1

0

The Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) has announced upward adjustments in electricity and water tariffs, set to take effect on January 1, 2026.

The changes follow the Commission’s multi-year tariff review process covering the period 2026 to 2030.

Under the new structure, electricity tariffs will increase by 9.86 percent across all customer categories, while water tariffs will rise by 15.92 percent over the five-year period.

According to the PURC, the adjustments are necessary to enable utility providers to meet critical investment needs, enhance sector competitiveness, and ensure long-term protection of consumers through improved service delivery.

The review also includes quarterly tariff adjustments to account for external factors such as exchange rate movements, inflation, fuel prices, and changes in the power generation mix.

In addition, the Commission has introduced mini-grid tariffs aimed at improving electricity access in island and hard-to-reach communities. The associated costs will be integrated into the revenue requirements of the Volta River Authority (VRA).

PURC noted that the decision was informed by extensive stakeholder consultations, public hearings, and careful assessment of proposals submitted by utility companies.

The Commission assured the public that it will continue to monitor service providers closely to ensure efficiency, value for money, and strict compliance with regulatory standards.

Haaland becomes quickest player to reach 100 Premier League goals

Erling Haaland broke the previous record set by former Newcastle star Alan Shearer Erling Haaland broke the previous record set by former Newcastle star Alan Shearer

Erling Haaland made history as the Manchester City striker became the fastest player to reach 100 Premier League goals in December 2’s clash with Fulham.

Haaland’s clinical finish in the first half at Craven Cottage took him to his century in just 111 league appearances for City.

The 25-year-old broke the previous record set by former Newcastle and Blackburn star Alan Shearer, who took 124 matches to reach 100 goals.

Haaland, signed from Borussia Dortmund in 2022, had failed to score in his previous three games against Newcastle, Bayer Leverkusen and Leeds.

He broke that mini-drought with the latest milestone in his glittering City career.

Of Haaland’s 100 goals, 71 came with his left foot and 17 with his head.

He produced a sumptuous finish to put City ahead in the 17th minute against Fulham, giving him 15 league goals this term and 20 in all competitions.

Jeremy Doku provided the assist with a precise cut-back and Haaland timed his run perfectly to unleash a ferocious blast that whistled past Fulham keeper Bernd Leno from 12 yards.

Haaland still has a long way to go to break Shearer’s most significant record, with the former England captain holding the Premier League’s all-time scoring mark on 260 goals.

Pope Leo lists African countries to visit

Pope Leo XIV is the leader of the world’s 1.4 billion Catholics Pope Leo XIV is the leader of the world’s 1.4 billion Catholics

Pope Leo XIV has said that he would like to visit Algeria in 2026 as part of a voyage to Africa, which could be his next overseas destination.

He made this known on Tuesday during a press conference aboard the papal plane on his return from a six-day visit to Turkey and Lebanon, marking the conclusion of his first international trip as pontiff.

“I hope to make a trip to Africa, which could be my next trip. Personally, I hope to go to Algeria to visit the places from the life of Saint Augustine,” he said.

According to the Vatican, a trip to Africa could also include visits to Cameroon and Equatorial Guinea.

Leo, leader of the world’s 1.4 billion Catholics, also said he would very much like to visit Latin America—Argentina, Uruguay, as well as Peru, where he spent more than 20 years working as a missionary.

DAILY POST reports that the pontiff, who was elected pope in May, belongs to the Augustinian Order, founded in the 13th century and with nearly 3,000 members across 50 countries.

Such a visit is expected to allow the head of the Catholic Church to continue fostering dialogue and bridge-building between the Christian and Muslim worlds.

“The figure of Saint Augustine plays an important role as a bridge because in Algeria he is highly respected as a son of the nation,” the 70-year-old pontiff said.

San Francisco sues food companies over ultra-processed products

0

The city of San Francisco on Tuesday sued ten leading food makers over their ultra-processed products, accusing the industry’s giants of knowingly selling foods that have been linked to a rise in serious diseases.

City officials claim the companies’ tactics resemble those of the tobacco industry. Local governments, they argue, have to shoulder the public health care costs.

Firms including Kraft Heinz, Mondelez and Coca-Cola have intentionally marketed addictive, unhealthy products in violation of California laws on public nuisance and unfair competition, according to the complaint.

Kraft, Mondelez and the other companies named as defendants did not immediately respond to requests for comment

Their products range from cookies and sweets to cereal and granola bars.

“These companies engineered a public health crisis, they profited handsomely, and now they need to take responsibility for the harm they have caused,” said San Francisco City Attorney David Chiu said in a statement.

Sarah Gallo, senior vice president of product policy at the Consumer Brands Association, an industry trade group, said an “agreed upon scientific definition” of ultra-processed foods does not exist.

“Attempting to classify foods as unhealthy simply because they are processed, or demonizing food by ignoring its full nutrient content, misleads consumers and exacerbates health disparities,” Ms Gallo said in a statement.

Food and beverage manufacturers, she added, are introducing new products with more protein and fibre, less sugar and sodium and without synthetic colour additives.

The lawsuit, filed in San Francisco Superior Court and one of the first of its kind, argues that the growing availability of ultra-processed foods has coincided with a “dramatic increase” in obesity, diabetes, heart disease, cancers and other chronic illnesses.

“This case is about food products with hidden health harms,” the complaint states.

The city is requesting monetary penalties and a statewide order forcing the food giants to change their “deceptive” marketing tactics.

Concern about ultra-processed foods has emerged as an area of consensus among some left-leaning officials and the Trump administration, even as they remain divided over Health Secretary Robert F Kennedy Jr’s other positions, including his scepticism of vaccines.

In April, Kennedy announced that the US would, for example, ban eight commonly used artificial food dyes.

The US health secretary and his Make America Healthy Again movement have also called for companies to remove ingredients such as corn syrup, seed oils and artificial dyes from their products, linking them to health problems.

Some food companies have announced changes to their products since Trump’s return to the White House. Coca-Cola this summer agreed to use real cane sugar in its drinks sold in the US.

San Francisco’s lawsuit is the first filed by a government entity over food companies’ intentional marketing of ultra-processed foods.

But this year, a judge in Pennsylvania dismissed a separate complaint brought by an individual who claimed ultra-processed foods contributed to his diabetes and liver disease diagnoses.

Nollywood across Nkechi Blessing Sunday has opened up on some of the challenges she encountered at the beginning of her career.

Featuring in a recent episode of The Honest Bunch podcast, the movie star revealed that the major challenge she faced was outlandish scripts.

She recalled that she was given a script to sleep with a dog but she rejected it because she felt it would create a negative impact on her image if she accepts it as her first role in Nollywood.

“Despite being a newcomer, I was given a script to sleep with a dog. I rejected it because I can’t start off my career like that. Imagine my first ever movie, I am sleeping with a dog. It doesn’t make sense. It is going to be a tag because whatever you start with is what people would associate you with. I didn’t want to be renowned as someone who sleeps with dogs in movies.

“So, I rejected that script. But immediately I threw it down, so many girls grabbed it. I’m not sure any of them are in the limelight today,” she stated.

Nkechi Blessing said after she left the production venue, she met veteran Nollywood filmmaker, Emeka Duru, who offered to work with her.

She added that Duru eventually gave her the opportunity to made her debut in the film ‘Through The Fire’ by Imem Isong.

‘Every rule has an exception’ – Kwakye Ofosu defends extension of IGP Yohuno’s contract

Felix Kwakye Ofosu is the Minister of Government Communications Felix Kwakye Ofosu is the Minister of Government Communications

Minister of State in charge of Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, has defended the Mahama administration’s decision to grant a two-year contract extension to Inspector-General of Police Christian Tetteh Yohuno, despite an earlier policy position that retiring public officers would not have their contracts renewed.

The government has been criticised by civil society organisations for what they describe as a reversal of its own directive.

But speaking to EIB Network’s Presidential Affairs Correspondent, Abdul-Hanan Adam, Mr. Kwakye Ofosu said the decision was based on strong security considerations.

He explained that although government generally discourages contract renewals, the Yohuno case required special treatment.

He said, “As a general rule, the government believes that it helps if we do not have a general flat policy of these renewals, but I’m sure that to every rule there is an exception, and especially because this is a security sector-related appointment… surely a case can be made for allowing sufficient time for his policies to percolate, for his initiatives to come to fruition.”

According to him, the decision was not taken unilaterally by the President but was informed by the Police Council after assessing the IGP’s performance and the country’s security needs.

“It is not a unilateral decision taken by the president,” he said. “The police council… examined the security challenges we have and also looked into what may be required to address them… and came to the conclusion that it will serve the interests of the country at this stage, to have this sort of extension.”

Kwakye Ofosu added that while the government still stands by its general principle against post-retirement extensions, the IGP’s situation presented “peculiar considerations” that justified making an exception.

The head coach of Ghana’s Black Queens, Kim Lars Bjorkegren, has indicated that his team is moving in the right direction despite their defeat to the Lionesses of England.

The Queens locked horns with the Lionesses in their final match in 2025 on Tuesday night, and succumbed to a 2-0 loss at St. Mary’s Stadium, despite putting up a top performance.

Speaking after the match, Kim Lars Bjorkegren commended his players for a good performance, insisting that the Black Queens are moving in the right direction.

“As a coach, you always want to win. But we are 67th in the world and faced a team that may be the best in the world right now. We can be proud of our performance, and we feel we are moving in the right direction,” Kim Lars Bjorkegren said.

Following the historic international friendly against England, the Queens now shift their focus to preparations for the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, which will run from 17 March to 3 April.

US lawmakers fault FG, insist Nigeria killings targeted at Christians

President Trump has asked lawmakers to compile a report on persecution of Nigerian Christians President Trump has asked lawmakers to compile a report on persecution of Nigerian Christians

U.S. lawmakers have sharply contradicted the Nigerian government’s position on the ongoing massacres in the country, describing the violence as “escalating,” “targeted,” and overwhelmingly directed at Christians during a rare joint congressional briefing on Wednesday.

The closed-door session—convened by House Appropriations Vice Chair Mario Díaz-Balart as part of a Trump-ordered investigation—examined recent killings and what Congress calls Abuja’s “deeply inadequate” response.

President Trump has asked lawmakers, led by Reps. Riley Moore and Tom Cole, to compile a report on persecution of Nigerian Christians and has even floated the possibility of U.S. military action against Islamist groups responsible for the attacks.

At the briefing, Vicky Hartzler, chair of the U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom, warned that “religious freedom [is] under siege” in Nigeria, citing mass abductions of schoolchildren and assaults in which “radical Muslims kill entire Christian villages [and] burn churches.” She said abuses were “rampant” and “violent,” claiming Christians are targeted “at a 2.2 to 1 rate” compared with Muslims.

While acknowledging Nigeria’s recent move to reassign 100,000 police officers from VIP protection, Hartzler said the country is entering a “coordinated and deeply troubling period of escalated violence.” She urged targeted sanctions, visa bans, asset freezes and tighter conditions on U.S. aid, insisting Abuja must retake villages seized from Christian communities so displaced widows and children can return home.

The strongest rebuke came from Dr. Ebenezer Obadare of the Council on Foreign Relations, who dismissed Abuja’s narrative that the killings are not religiously motivated. He called the idea that extremists attack Muslims and Christians equally a “myth,” stressing the groups operate “for one reason and one reason only: religion.” Higher Muslim casualty figures, he argued, reflect geography, not equal targeting.

Ads by

Obadare described Boko Haram as fundamentally anti-democratic and accused the Nigerian military of being “too corrupt and incompetent” to defeat jihadist networks without external pressure. He urged Washington to push Nigeria to disband armed religious militias, confront security-sector corruption and respond swiftly to early warnings.

Sean Nelson of ADF International called Nigeria “the deadliest country in the world for Christians,” claiming more Christians are killed there than in all other countries combined and at a rate “five times” higher than Muslims when adjusted for population. He said extremists also kill Muslims who reject violent ideologies, undermining Abuja’s argument that the crisis is driven mainly by crime or communal disputes.

He pressed for tighter oversight on U.S. aid, recommending that some assistance be routed through faith-based groups to avoid corruption. Without “transparency and outside pressure,” he said, “nothing changes.”

Díaz-Balart criticised the Biden administration’s reversal of Trump’s designation of Nigeria as a “country of particular concern” in 2021, saying the decision had “clearly deadly consequences.” Lawmakers from the Appropriations, Foreign Affairs and Financial Services committees signaled further oversight actions as they prepare the Trump-directed report.

Hartzler pointed to recent comments by Nigeria’s Speaker of the House acknowledging a “coordinated and deeply troubling period of escalated violence,” calling it a rare moment of candor. She also welcomed the redeployment of police officers as “a promising start after years of neglect.”

But she stressed that these gestures are far from sufficient, insisting the Nigerian government must demonstrate a real commitment to “quell injustice,” act swiftly on early warnings, and embrace transparency.

The Nigerian Embassy did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Ghana were strong in the duels – England manager Sarina Wiegman – Ghana Latest Football News, Live Scores, Results

England manager Sarina Wiegman says Ghana provided a strong physical contest in Tuesday night’s 2-0 friendly win at St Mary’s Stadium, as the European champions closed out the year on a positive note.

Speaking to ITV after the match, Wiegman admitted England could have scored more, but highlighted the strength of Ghana’s duels in key areas of the pitch.

“Ghana were strong in the duels, and we wanted runs in the half spaces and get numbers in the box,” she said.

Ghana Energy Awards honours 36 industry leaders

0

Thirty-six individuals and organisations have been honoured for outstanding leadership and innovation at the 9th Ghana Energy Awards (GEA) in Accra.

Organised by the Energy Media Group and endorsed by the Ministry of Energy and Green Transition as well as the World Energy Council FEL Ghana, this year’s edition—held under the theme “Repositioning the energy sector as a pillar of national development”—drew senior government officials, diplomats, international partners and industry captains.

Speaking on behalf of the Minister of Energy and Green Transition, Dr. John Abdulai Jinapor, Deputy Minister Richard Gyan-Mensah said the awards continue to serve as a national benchmark for performance, transparency and professionalism. He commended the awardees for their resilience and innovation at a time when the energy landscape is undergoing significant transformation.

Reforms generating substantial savings

Mr. Gyan-Mensah highlighted the gains from reforms introduced since January 2025, including the procurement of 200 transformers, strict enforcement of the Cash Waterfall Mechanism, restructuring of power purchase agreements and targeted investments in solar deployment and rural electrification.

These measures, he said, have saved the state more than US$300 million and contributed to the longest period of stable electricity supply in recent years.

He noted a major turnaround at the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), where operational expenditure has fallen sharply—from GH¢9 billion in 2024 to GH¢2 billion this year—while monthly revenue has nearly doubled to GH¢1.7 billion. Improvements in collections, liquidity management and fuel procurement have enhanced overall system reliability.

Renewables, nuclear and distribution reforms advance

More than 200MW of solar projects are under development nationwide, including the 25MW floating solar project at Bui and the 30MW Kpong solar plant supported by kfw Bank. Government is also extending mini-grids to island communities and preparing a US$100 million investment to electrify an additional 150 remote communities.

The Government Goes Solar initiative, backed by a €30 million kfw facility, aims to install 22MW of solar capacity across public institutions, generating annual savings of GH¢52 million. A solar street-lighting pilot in the Ashanti Region is slated for nationwide rollout.

On nuclear energy, Ghana has progressed to Phase 2 of the IAEA Nuclear Roadmap, completed 60 percent of site acquisition and secured Cabinet approval for the establishment of a national owner-operator company.

To enhance financial discipline, the ministry has terminated over 200 non-performing ECG contracts valued at more than US$227 million. Cabinet has also approved a plan to introduce private-sector participation in power distribution, with concessions expected in 2026.

Oil production stabilising amid new field development

In the petroleum sector, Ghana produced 27.93 million barrels of crude between January and September 2025, with the Greater Jubilee Field accounting for the bulk of output. Production is expected to stabilise as government accelerates developments such as the Pecan field and implements the National Petroleum Revitalisation Strategy.

Mr. Gyan-Mensah reaffirmed government’s commitment to the US$560 billion Energy Transition Framework, which targets affordable, decarbonised energy with tariffs below 4.5 cents per kilowatt-hour.

Award highlights

Volta River Authority Chief Executive, Edward Ekow Obeng-Kenzo, was named Energy Personality of the Year (Male), while Ghana National Gas Company CEO, Judith Adjobah Blay, received the female category honour. Maurizio Pinna of Eni Ghana won CEO of the Year (Petroleum), and ECG’s Julius Kpekpena emerged CEO of the Year (Power).

Awarding panel chairman Kwame Jantuah noted that rigorous scrutiny guided the evaluation process, including independent technical assessments led by former Energy Commission Executive Secretary Dr Alfred Ofosu-Ahenkorah. Two categories were withdrawn after entries failed to meet assessment standards—an indication, he said, of the scheme’s commitment to integrity.

The minister stressed that ongoing reforms are firmly positioning the energy sector as a pillar of national development and central to the nation’s ambition of building a resilient, inclusive 24-hour economy.

International probe expands into financial activities of Newrajlall Burton

0

Mauritian national Newrajlall Burton is at the centre of a widening international inquiry that investigators say spans multiple jurisdictions, corporate clients, and a network of suspicious financial transactions.

What began as a routine administrative review has transformed into a multi-country probe involving law enforcement authorities in Mauritius and the United Arab Emirates (UAE), with potential losses estimated at over USD 1 million, according to officials familiar with the case.

Individuals close to the investigation describe a pattern of allegedly falsified invoices, altered bank details, and offshore accounts in Dubai and Abu Dhabi. Investigators in both countries suspect these accounts may have been used to quietly divert payments from unsuspecting corporate clients across several continents.

Burton, who worked out of Hennessy Court in Port Louis, is being examined for his possible role in the matter. Authorities emphasize that he has not been charged in relation to this new probe, and all allegations remain under investigation. Four other individuals believed to be connected to the same network have reportedly fled Mauritius and are now on an international watchlist. UAE officials have identified at least four bank accounts flagged as suspicious in connection with the diverted funds.

How the investigation unfolded

Although the public is only now learning of the scale of the alleged fraud, investigative leads stretch back months. According to officials, the case formally opened in March 2024, following earlier complaints lodged with Dubai’s Cyber Crimes Department in September 2023. Burton provided an initial statement to Mauritian investigators on 9 October 2023, around the period when authorities began detecting patterns pointing to possible coordinated offshore activity.

Burton has since assembled a legal team comprising two counsel and an attorney, who are preparing to file a Demand of Particulars on 24 September. Legal analysts note that such filings can, in some cases, help clarify the scope of an investigation or test the strength of preliminary evidence. Authorities in both Mauritius and the UAE maintain that their inquiries remain active and confidential.

A controversial past resurfaces

As scrutiny around the current allegations intensifies, Burton’s previous dealings have returned to public attention. In 2023, he was convicted by the Financial Division of the Intermediate Court of Mauritius in the matter ICAC v. Newrajlall Burton (2023 INT 98 CN 062021). At the time, Burton served as Chairman of the National Computer Board (NCB).

The court found him guilty of conflict of interest, determining that he had influenced the recruitment of his sister-in-law, Leena Chooroomoney, for a managerial position within the NCB’s Public Incubator in 2007. Evidence presented in court showed that her application was faxed from Burton’s own office after the submission deadline, and that he remained actively involved in multiple stages of the recruitment process despite the conflict.

Burton was arrested by the Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC) and later released on bail of Rs 20,000. The conviction carries a potential penalty of up to 10 years’ imprisonment.

Fresh concerns

Officials stress that the new corporate fraud investigation is not connected to Burton’s earlier conviction. However, the resurfacing of the 2023 ruling has prompted discussion about governance, oversight, and the vulnerabilities created when individuals with access to sensitive systems are placed in positions of trust.

Confidential briefings suggest that affected global clients — especially within the technology and payments sectors — are being discreetly alerted as investigators trace the cross-border movement of funds.

Authorities in Mauritius and the UAE are urging companies to tighten internal controls, warning that some of the most damaging fraud schemes originate not from external hackers, but from trusted insiders familiar with institutional processes.

With more documents undergoing forensic analysis in both jurisdictions, investigators caution that the case remains fluid — and that this may only be the beginning of a far-reaching inquiry.

THE GHANA Football Association’s (GFA’s) Disciplinary Committee has officially charged Asante Kotoko SC following alleged threats and assaults on match officials during their Matchday 12 fixture against Medeama SC.

In its statement, the Committee indicated that Kotoko failed to protect the officials after unauthorised individuals were allowed into Zone 2 — the restricted tunnel area — during halftime.

The incidents, reportedly involving threats and physical confrontations, are said to constitute a breach of the 2025 Enhanced Matchday Protocols.

Asante Kotoko has been given until Wednesday, December 3, 2025, to submit their official response to the charges.

The charge sheet issued by the GFA cites violations of both the Disciplinary Code (2019) and the Enhanced Matchday Safety and Security Protocols (2025). The Committee stressed that the club bore responsibility for ensuring the safety of referees and match personnel, a duty it allegedly failed to uphold during the encounter.

The match itself ended in a 2-2 draw, with Medeama holding the Porcupine Warriors to a stalemate at full time.

Kotoko is expected to respond within the stipulated deadline as the GFA continues its review of the incident.

The Deputy Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, Mohammed Adams Sukparu, has hailed the National Investment Bank’s (NIB) launch of its mobile application and Ubuntu initiative as a significant boost to Ghana’s digitalisation agenda.

Delivering a speech at the launch of the event, the Deputy Minister for Communication, Digital Technology emphasised that the NIB mobile app is more than just a banking tool but a gateway to financial empowerment, enabling individuals and businesses to transact seamlessly, safely, and securely.

He commended the NIB for its efforts, stating that the initiative aligns with the government’s goal of building a 24-hour economy driven entirely by technology.

He urged citizens and businesses to take advantage of the new platform, emphasising the importance of security and customer care.

“The Ubuntu initiative serves as a vital reminder that humanity and empathy must remain fundamentally at the heart of service delivery,” Sukparu said, adding that the combination of technological innovation and humanistic values will set NIB apart and establish it as a trusted partner in Ghana’s economic transformation.

In a speech read on his behalf, Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, Finance Minister, commended the bank’s digital drive, noting that “innovation in financial services is critical to Ghana’s economic resilience.”

He commended NIB for aligning its digitalization agenda with Ghana’s broader economic transformation goals and called on financial institutions to align with government’s agenda for digital transformation.

He urged the bank to continue supporting small and medium enterprises (SMEs) and contributing to the government’s vision of the 24-hour economy.

Delivering the keynote address, Ambassador Mussie Hailu, Regional Director of United Religions Initiative (URI-Africa), highlighted Ubuntu’s philosophy of togetherness.

He stressed the need to fuse digital innovation with human-centered values, stating that the initiative would “champion the values of solidarity, peace, and shared prosperity,” and position NIB as a frontrunner in socially responsible banking.

In his opening remarks, Odeneho Dr Affram Brempong III, Omanhene of the Suma Traditional Area and Member of the Council of State commended NIB for its remarkable progress and urged stakeholders to embrace digital transformation as a pathway to inclusive growth.

He noted that banking was rapidly shifting from “bricks and mortar” to digital platforms, enabling customers to transact business conveniently from their phones and homes.

“I cannot even recall the last time I walked into a bank to issue a cheque,” he said, underscoring the relevance of mobile banking in today’s financial landscape.

He highlighted the bank’s turnaround performance, recalling that NIB recorded a loss of about GH¢44 million last year but had achieved a profit of about GH¢74 million by mid-year 2025.

Chief Dr Doliwura Zakaria, NIB Managing Director, said the mobile app would “offer endless possibilities” for customers, enabling seamless transactions and strengthening the bank’s digital footprint.

He said the Ubuntu initiative reflected NIB’s commitment to unity and shared progress and that the launch was not merely about introducing a mobile application but about “unveiling a new chapter in the transformation of NIB; one that blends innovation with humanity, digital strength with cultural renewal and technology with purpose.”

120% NHIS tariff increase necessary to improve healthcare – Garu MP

0

The Member of Parliament for Garu and a member of the Health Committee, Dr. Thomas Anaba, has endorsed the government’s decision to increase tariffs for healthcare service providers under the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), describing it as a necessary step to improve healthcare delivery.

His comments come after the Health Minister, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, at the Government Accountability Series on Monday, December 1, revealed plans to significantly adjust NHIS tariffs upward. The Minister said the move responds to persistent complaints from health facilities that the current tariff structure is unrealistic and financially unsustainable.

Speaking on Channel One Newsroom on Tuesday, December 2, the Garu MP noted that the increase is justified, especially after the government uncapped the NHIS levy to make more resources available for the scheme.

According to him, the increment will provide hospitals with the financial capacity they have lacked for years and ultimately enhance the quality of healthcare across the country.

“The government uncapped the levy because it was moment for health insurance. There was no need to cap it in the first place and if they have capped it and there is more resources and there is a cry for the increment of tariffs for several years now, it is very prudent for government to increase it. Good to go.

“Ghanaians should be happy because hospitals will get money to manage things that they had no money to manage. They will be able to provide quality service, buy equipment, renovate their hospitals, make their hospitals very neat and pay staff to give out their best.

“To me, this is the best thing that has happened to the health sector. Increasing tariff by 120% is too much,” he stated.

George Opare Addo launches National Youth App

George Opare Addo among dignitaries at the event George Opare Addo among dignitaries at the event

The Minister of Youth Development and Empowerment, George Opare Addo, has launched major national digital tools, the National Youth App (Youth Explorer) and the AgTractive Campaign, marking a significant milestone in Ghana’s effort to expand opportunities for young people and strengthen youth-focused governance.

The event, organised by the Ministry of Youth Development and Empowerment in partnership with AGRA, highlighted the government’s renewed commitment to youth development under President John Dramani Mahama’s RESET agenda.

Addressing participants in Accra on December 2, 2025, George Opare Addo described the moment as “a defining step toward building a fair, transparent and intelligent national system that truly delivers for young people.”

The minister noted that although agencies such as the National Youth Authority (NYA), Youth Employment Agency (YEA), National Entrepreneurship and Innovation Programme (NEIP) and the National Service Authority (NSA) have historically run important youth programmes, these initiatives often operated in isolation.

This fragmentation, he explained, has led to “duplication of efforts, inconsistent targeting and unequal access to opportunities across the country.”

The newly unveiled National Youth Tracker App brings an end to this fragmented approach by integrating data and programmes from all major youth-focused agencies into a single unified digital platform.

Powered by a locally developed AI engine, the system also interprets labour market trends and guides the government on where to invest for maximum impact.

“This is the difference between simply running programs and governing with clarity, evidence, and foresight,” Opare Addo emphasised.

Complementing the Tracker is the Youth Explorer App, a user-friendly platform that links young people directly to jobs, vocational training, entrepreneurship support, apprenticeships, internships, scholarships and national service placements.

The minister highlighted that the system moves beyond traditional evaluation methods that focus solely on certificates. Instead, it assesses users based on skills, passions, ambitions, and potential.

Once a user creates a profile, the app automatically matches them with opportunities they qualify for while identifying skill gaps and recommending pathways to close them.

The minister described this approach as “mentorship at scale,” adding that the era of protocol, favouritism, and “who you know” is coming to an end.

The Youth Explorer App was also designed with inclusivity in mind, featuring screen-reader compatibility, voice navigation, high-contrast modes, simplified interfaces, and sign-language video support to ensure accessibility for young people with disabilities.

The minister called for stronger collaboration among agencies, ministries and development partners, stressing that the success of these tools depends on collective commitment.

Over 100,000 teenage pregnancies are recorded in Ghana each year – Opare Addo

Opare Addo reaffirming President Mahama’s commitment to ensuring that opportunities are fair, accessible and evenly distributed.

“Every young Ghanaian deserves a clear path to skills development, employment, and a dignified life,” he said.

At the ceremony, AGRA Country Director Dr Betty Simawua Annan, speaking on behalf of the AGRA President, reaffirmed AGRA’s dedication to supporting national efforts to empower young people and expand employment opportunities.

She expressed gratitude to the minister, his directors, and all agencies under the ministry for collaborating with AGRA to deliver impactful, youth-centered solutions.

Mbappé Penalty Earns Madrid Draw Against Girona

0

Mbappe equalized from the spot

Kylian Mbappe’s penalty rescued Real Madrid from defeat at Girona, but a point meant they missed the chance to move back to the top of La Liga.

The French striker tucked a low effort past the reach of Paulo Gazzaniga to equalise from the spot in the 67th minute after Vinicius Jr was tripped by Hugo Rincon in the box.

It was Mbappe’s 23rd goal in 19 matches for Real this season, having scored four in the midweek Champions League win at Olympiacos.

Girona, who are third from bottom with just 12 points, had led with Azzedine Ounahi’s effort just before half-time.

They made it difficult for Real throughout with adept marking, and made the most of a lack of end product from the visitors.

Real remain second in Spain’s top flight, a point behind leaders Barcelona.

It was an improved second half which made the difference for Xabi Alonso’s side after a sluggish opening period which saw them register just one shot on target.

Mbappe thought he had opened the scoring in the first half when he managed to keep the ball under control and bundle it home in a crowded area, but it was ruled out for hitting his hand as he steadied himself.

Real were soon punished for their lack of efficiency in the final third when Girona struck on the counter-attack, working the ball back to Moroccan Ounahi who sent a first-time effort into the top corner from the edge of the box.

A change in approach eventually helped Real trouble the hosts as they focused on quick attacking moves through the middle, with Vinicius also dragging players out of position to mark him on the wing.

Vinicius turned home from close range after an intricate passing move, but the Brazilian had strayed offside before receiving the final pass.

But Mbappe stepped up to spare his side a second league defeat with his spot-kick as Alonso’s side have now won just one of their past five games in all competitions.

England edge Ghana in competitive friendly test – Ghana Latest Football News, Live Scores, Results

0

England Women claimed a 2–0 win over Ghana in an international friendly in Southampton, but the scoreline only told part of the story after a spirited display from the Black Queens.

Coach Kim Lars Bjorkegren gave new defender Benedicte Simon her first start for Ghana.

The hosts struck early when Lucia Kendall finished in the 6th minute, setting the tone for an England side that dominated possession yet found Ghana stubborn and organised at the back. Goalkeeper Cynthia Konlan was outstanding, making several key saves and earning player-of-the-match recognition.

Ghana grew into the game after the break, defending compactly and looking to threaten on the counter through Alice Kusi’s replacement Princess Marfo and later substitutes like Princella Adubea. Ghana’s resistance was finally broken deep into stoppage time when VAR awarded a penalty, which Alessia Russo calmly converted in the 96th minute to seal the result.

For the Black Queens, this friendly was less about the score and more about testing new combinations and building cohesion ahead of crucial upcoming assignments in qualification and regional competitions.

Akandoh gives newly posted doctors one week to report to work

0

The Minister of Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has given newly posted medical doctors an additional week to report to their duty stations, following what he described as an alarming nationwide refusal to take up postings.

Mr Akandoh said initial reporting figures were “not encouraging,” revealing that seven out of every ten newly assigned doctors had failed to report. The situation is most difficult in the Upper West and Upper East regions, which recorded no arrivals as of Friday, November 29.

Addressing journalists in Accra on Tuesday, December 2, the Minister said, in the Upper West Region, 25 out of 32 doctors posted have not reported, a development the minister warned could jeopardise healthcare delivery for nearly one million residents.

“We will give them an additional week to appeal to them to report to their various facilities where they have been posted. After that, we will do what we call validation,” he said. He stressed that the postings would not be changed under any circumstances.

Mr Akandoh said the ministry was working with local authorities to make the districts more accommodating for the doctors.

“We are engaging stakeholders in their respective districts—regional ministers, Members of Parliament, DCEs, chiefs—to facilitate their stay so they can give their best,” he said. He added that the government was also considering incentives to encourage compliance.

The minister expressed confidence that the doctors would eventually report, describing them as “wonderful medical doctors” who would respond to the call.

He also highlighted the uneven distribution of doctors nationwide, noting that nearly half of the country’s medical doctors are concentrated in the Greater Accra Region.

“Is it not scary?” he asked. “So at this point, the government has made a decision: let’s post these medical officers to where their services are needed most.”

Mr Akandoh stated that regional health directors had already begun reaching out through calls and would follow up with electronic messages.

He further disclosed that stakeholder engagements were underway to secure support, including accommodation and other provisions, to ease the transition for the doctors.

Rare Fabergé egg fetches record £22.9m at London auction

0

A diamond-studded crystal Fabergé egg that once belonged to Russia’s imperial family has sold for a record £22.9m ($30.2m) in London.

The Winter Egg – considered one of the legendary jeweller’s most beautiful creations – was bought by an anonymous bidder on Tuesday, Christie’s auction house said.

It is decorated with 4,500 diamonds and was commissioned by Tsar Nicholas II in 1913 as a present to his mother.

The previous record for a Fabergé egg was £8.9m paid at auction in 2007.

“Today’s result sets a new world auction record for a work by Fabergé, reaffirming the enduring significance of this masterpiece,” Christie’s Margo Oganesian was quoted as saying by the AFP news agency.

The 8.2cm high (3.2in) egg was created by Carl Fabergé, based on the design of Alma Theresia Pihl, one of only two female workmasters at St Petersburg’s jewellery company.

It was carved from rock crystal and decorated with rose-cut diamonds, as well as platinum snowflake motifs.

The egg opens up to reveal a tiny basket of white quartz flowers inside.

The Fabergé house only ever made 50 eggs for Russia’s imperial Romanov family, and the Imperial Winter Egg is one of just seven left in private hands.

The others are either missing or owned by institutions or museums.

The eggs were made from 1885 until Tsar Nicholas II was forced to abdicate in 1917.

GSA urges shippers to directly control port payments

0

John Glover during an interaction with the media John Glover during an interaction with the media

The Ghana Shippers’ Authority (GSA) is strongly advising importers and exporters to take direct control of their duty and port-service payments via approved digital platforms.

This call, made by the Middle Zonal Office, emphasizes the critical need for compliance, accuracy and transparency within the Ghana’s port operations.

Addressing a media briefing in Kumasi, the Middle Zonal Manager John Glover clarified that while freight forwarders and clearing agents traditionally manage payment processes and invoice generation, the ultimate responsibility for ensuring precise payments rests with cargo owners.

“Exporters must actively engage in paying duties themselves using available digital platforms.

“This ensures they know that their customs obligations have been fully met. We want shippers to take hands-on interest in these transactions to prevent errors and discrepancies,” he said.

He further explained that direct payment by shippers significantly reduces risks often detected during post-clearance audits; a crucial compliance tool employed by Customs to identify issues like under-declaration, misclassification, and valuation irregularities. The manager stressed that accurate payments protect traders from penalties that can arise from agent errors or malpractice.

The briefing also served to highlight the GSA’s expanded authority under the new Ghana Shippers’ Authority Act, 2024 (Act 1122).

This legislation reconstitutes the Authority as a fully empowered regulator for commercial shipping and logistics across sea, air and land corridors.

The Act now grants the GSA robust powers to standardize port pricing, prevent arbitrary charges, enhance operational transparency and foster a more competitive trading environment. Crucially, it empowers the Authority to impose statutory fines and sanctions on stakeholders who fail to comply with regulations, a capability that was absent under the previous legal framework.

Glover urged all importers, exporters and service providers to cooperate fully with the Authority to strengthen compliance and improve Ghana’s overall trade facilitation ecosystem.

The Kumasi event formed part of the GSA’s annual media sensitization programme, designed to provide journalists with an in-depth understanding of the Authority’s functions, new mandates and ongoing industry reforms.

This initiative aims to enhance the accuracy and depth of media reporting on shipping and logistics matters, thereby promoting informed public discourse.

“A transparent and well-regulated port system relies not only on robust institutions but also on the active participation of industry stakeholders and accurate information from the media,” Glover concluded.

According to Glover, the GSA plans to extend these education campaigns across the Middle Zone to ensure that all shippers and logistics operators are fully aligned with Act 1122 and the evolving regulatory landscape.

Deteriorating Kaase timber bridge sparks safety concerns in Asokwa

0

Drivers and commuters in the Asokwa Municipality of the Ashanti Region have raised alarm over the deteriorating state of the Kaase Timber Bridge, warning that the structure is on the brink of collapse.

Regular users of the bridge, which connects key areas including the Kaase Industrial Area and Kumasi Metropolis, say sinking sections and weakened timber components pose a serious and potentially deadly threat.

With heavy traffic and large trucks crossing the bridge daily, residents fear a collapse could result in disaster and possible loss of lives.

Constructed in 1990 over the Subin River as a research and development project, the bridge was built using secondary timber species and green cement. It was developed by the Building and Road Research Institute (BRRI) of the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), in collaboration with university researchers, to demonstrate the potential of local timber in bridge construction. Although rehabilitated in 2015, the bridge is again showing clear signs of failure.

Motorists and residents are appealing to authorities for urgent intervention to prevent a potential catastrophe.

Sources at the Ashanti Regional Urban Roads Department indicate that discussions with BRRI regarding the rehabilitation of the bridge are ongoing.

However, it remains unclear when repair work will commence, a delay that commuters say could have serious consequences.

Attempts to obtain comments from BRRI officials were unsuccessful, as they declined to speak on the matter.

Kim Lars Bjorkegren proud of Black Queens’ performance despite defeat to England – Ghana Latest Football News, Live Scores, Results

0

Ghana coach Kim Lars Bjorkegren expressed pride in the Black Queens’ display after their 2-0 defeat to England, stressing that the performance showed clear signs of progress.

Ghana conceded early at St Mary’s Stadium, with Lucia Kendall reacting quickest to a loose ball and finishing from close range after six minutes.

England controlled much of the possession and created several openings, striking the woodwork multiple times, but Ghana remained organised and restricted further damage before the interval.

The Lionesses secured the result in stoppage time when substitute Alessia Russo earned a penalty for handball and scored from the spot to double the lead.

Bjorkegren highlighted the effort shown by his squad and urged perspective following the match.

“As a coach, you always want to win,” he said. “But we are 67th in the world and faced a team that may be the best in the world right now. We can be proud of our performance, and we feel we are moving in the right direction.”

The Black Queens now shift their focus to preparations for the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, which will run from 17 March to 3 April.

Water tariffs up by 15.9%, electricity up 9.8% effective January 1, 2026

0

The Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) has announced new tariff adjustments for electricity and water, effective January 1, 2026, following its multi-year tariff review process covering 2026 to 2030.

Electricity tariffs will rise by 9.86 percent across all customer categories, while water tariffs will see a 15.92 percent increase over the five-year control period.

The Commission said the adjustments were necessary to meet the investment requirements of utility providers, ensure industry competitiveness, and safeguard consumer interests.

The review also incorporates quarterly adjustments to account for factors beyond the control of service providers, including exchange rate fluctuations, inflation, fuel costs, and generation mix.

Additionally, mini-grid tariffs have been introduced to support electricity access in island communities, with costs absorbed into the Volta River Authority’s revenue requirements.

PURC emphasised that the decision followed extensive stakeholder consultations, public hearings, and evaluation of utility proposals.

The Commission pledged to continue monitoring service providers to ensure efficiency, value for money, and adherence to regulatory standards.
