Handbreak Failure Triggers Mulitple Auto Crash, Kills Two, Injures Nine On Lagos-Abeokuta Road

A tragic road accident on Monday evening claimed two lives and left nine others injured after a truck rolled backwards and caused a multiple-vehicle crash along the Lagos-Abeokuta expressway.

The incident occurred near Tipper Garage and involved a DAF truck, a Mazda bus, and a tricycle. Commander of the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps (TRACE), Adekunle Ajibade, confirmed the development on Tuesday.

According to Ajibade, the crash took place at about 7:40 pm and involved 14 people in total.

He identified the vehicles as a DAF truck with registration number JJJ 144 XD, a Mazda bus marked EPE 394 XP, and a tricycle bearing DGB 599 VC.

Explaining how the crash happened, Ajibade said the truck had been left parked on an incline near a warehouse opposite Tipper Garage, with the engine still running and handbrake engaged.

“The driver stepped away to hand over a waybill to the security personnel at the warehouse gate,” he said.

Ajibade noted that the handbrake eventually disengaged, causing the truck to roll backwards onto the expressway and ram into the other vehicles.

“Three of the occupants were not hurt; the bodies have been deposited at Ifo General Hospital, while those injured are being treated at the same hospital,” he added.

Ajibade confirmed that officers from TRACE and the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) quickly arrived at the scene and cleared the wreckage to ease traffic.

He urged drivers to adhere strictly to road safety rules.
