The Benue State Police Command has firmly denied viral reports alleging a fresh herdsmen attack on Wannue Town in Tarka Local Government Area.
In a statement issued Saturday by the command’s spokesperson, DSP Udeme Edet, the police described the reports circulating on social media as “entirely false and misleading.”
According to Edet, the incident in question, which occurred around 8 p.m. on June 21, involved a targeted shooting, not a communal or herdsmen-related attack.

“The police received a report that one Aondohemba Yayough was shot dead along Akume Road, Wannue. A team of detectives was immediately deployed to the scene,” she said.
Edet revealed that the alleged attacker was identified by witnesses as Saater Aii, a known ex-convict.

Local security operatives managed to disarm the suspect, but he escaped from the scene.
Two others who sustained injuries during the incident are currently receiving medical treatment at a nearby hospital. An AK-47 rifle used in the attack was recovered by the police.
Efforts are underway to apprehend the fleeing suspect, while law enforcement has urged residents to disregard online misinformation and rely on verified sources for updates.
“Members of the public are urged to ignore misinformation and rely only on verified sources. No herdsmen were reported in Wannue,” Edet reiterated.
The statement is aimed at curbing panic and maintaining public order in a region already sensitive to reports of communal violence. The police reassured citizens of their continued commitment to peace and security.
