At least 32 cows have been killed by thunder and lightning at Osara, Obantoko area of Abeokuta, Odeda Local Government area of Ogun State during a heavy rainfall.
The traditional ruler of Osara, Chief Wasiu Afolabi, on Sunday, said that the incident happened during the torrential rainfall, which started at about noon on Saturday.
Afolabi noted that the suspected Fulani herders in charge of the animals alerted him to the tragic incident at about 2 pm on Saturday.

He explained that the matter had been reported to the Aregbe police division as well as Dr Afolashade Adeyemo, the Chairman of Odeda Local Government.
Afolabi said: “I was at home on Saturday when the Fulani herders at about 2 pm came to report that lightning had killed 32 of their cows.
“I got to their place, where they usually keep these cows before they are taken out for grazing and saw these dead cows.
“We have, however, reported the incident to the Aregbe police division as well as the Chairman of Odeda Local Government, Dr Afolashade Adeyemo, and other people who must be aware.
“We have equally scheduled a meeting for this morning with the Fulani to know what to do next and also ensure that the incident does not affect the peace of the community.”

Also speaking over the shocking incident in a statement by Spokesperson for Ogun State Police Command, Omolola Odutola on Sunday, said that no physical injury was spotted in the body of the dead cows.
She said: “On the 21st of June, 2025, at about 1640hrs, two herders from Osara Community in Odeda Local Government Area of Ogun State reported an unusual incident at Aregbe Divisional Headquarters regarding the death of thirty-two cows in a nearby forest during rainstorm earlier that day
“The herders, who are jointly responsible for the livestock, suspected that the deaths may have resulted from thunderstorm with intense lightning. At the time of the report, the total monetary value of the livestock could not be ascertained.
“A prompt on-the-spot assessment was conducted by the Divisional Police Officer. Initial observations revealed no visible injuries or foul play on the animals.
“The cattle were found lying lifeless in various positions in the forest. The owners confirmed they do not suspect any individual or group, nor have they made any allegations or accusations.”
