Church Must Avoid Political Blindness In 2027

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has issued a stern caution to the Christian community, warning against repeating what he described as a near-catastrophic political decision made in 2023.

Speaking during a thanksgiving service at St. James’ Anglican Church, Asokoro, Abuja on Sunday, Wike recounted how the Church’s perceived endorsement of a certain political direction in the last general election almost cost Nigeria its future.

“Let me use this opportunity to tell us, particularly the Church you nearly made the worst mistake in 2023,” Wike stated. We have to be very careful this time around.”

The former Rivers State governor urged church leaders to seek informed political advice from credible members of their congregation, including politicians and lawmakers, to avoid being misled.

“You took a decision that would have cost some of us our future. Ask us questions we are the politicians.

“You have senators in this church, call on them, ask what is going on, and they would be able to educate you.”

Wike warned that similar mistakes must be avoided in the lead-up to the 2027 general elections. He described political blackmail and misinformation as tools already being deployed again.

“They are at it again blackmail. If that thing had happened, some of us wouldn’t have been here today,” he added.

He stressed the importance of political awareness among religious institutions, especially in a democracy where the Church plays a critical role in shaping opinions.

“Our hands are full building this country, but we must not be silent when it comes to preserving its future,” he concluded.

Wike’s remarks appear to reflect ongoing political realignments as the 2027 elections draw nearer, urging the Church to act with caution and discernment.
