“We’ll Ensure Peace Returns To Rivers” – Akpabio Assures

Senate President Godswill Akpabio has reaffirmed the National Assembly’s commitment to resolving the prolonged political crisis rocking Rivers State.

Speaking on Thursday during the commissioning of the Kugbo Taxi and Bus Terminal in Abuja, Akpabio assured that lawmakers will play a central role in restoring stability and peace in the state.

“We are determined to ensure that normalcy returns to Rivers State. The National Assembly will work closely with all parties involved to ensure lasting peace and progress for the people.”

The crisis, which erupted months ago, led to the suspension of Governor Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy, and the entire state legislature, following President Bola Tinubu’s controversial declaration of a state of emergency in the state.

Fubara’s suspension triggered national concern, especially as Rivers is a strategic state politically and economically.

Following the impasse, Governor Fubara has since held closed-door meetings with President Tinubu and FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, his estranged political mentor.

Wike, who recently signaled a willingness to reconcile, had publicly urged Fubara to initiate peace talks with other stakeholders.

“We must understand that political disagreements can be resolved if there is genuine interest in peace,” Akpabio added.

“The Senate is not sitting back. We are engaging all sides constructively to address the root causes and prevent further escalation.”
