Using Age Discrimination Against Women Is An Insult – Uriel Oputa

Former Big Brother Naija housemate, Uriel, has condemned the act of age shaming, especially when targeted at women, saying aging should be seen as a privilege, not something to mock.

In a video message shared on her Instagram page on Sunday, Uriel directed her remarks at Nigerian men, urging them to reflect on the importance of life and personal growth, rather than judging women based on their age.

“So I want to say a quick one and this is going to be pinpointed to Nigerian men,” she began.

“It’s an absolute insult to humanity, to God, to use age discrimination against a woman. I post a video and the thing is you are not coherent with what the video teaches you but what you get out of that video is ‘oh you’re old.’ That’s an insult because you’re not smart enough to digest and use the concept that was taught to you to better your life.”

She continued by reminding viewers that life itself is a gift, and many would do anything just to have more time.

“But what you hold on to is that ‘oh you’re getting older.’ It is better to get older than to be six feet under. There are billionaires who would give anything to come back and sell pure water on the street.”

Uriel added, “So before you think twice and before you think insulting a woman because she is growing gracefully and beautifully is not an insult, it’s a blessing to age.”

Her message focused on promoting self-worth, dignity, and respect for the aging process—especially for women who often face societal pressure regarding their appearance and age.

Captioning the video, she wrote:
“On Aging & Self-Worth: There is NO shame in aging. Aging is a privilege. I’d rather grow older in purpose than be six feet under with regrets. Some people have all the money in the world — and still wish they had one more day to breathe. Don’t mock what you don’t understand. One day, life will remind you.”

Uriel’s statement serves as a strong reminder to value wisdom, maturity, and the experiences that come with growing older.
