Tinubu Must Restructure Security To End Bloodshed

Aare Onakakanfo of Yorubaland, Gani Adams, has urged President Tinubu to decentralise Nigeria’s security, citing relentless killings in Benue, Plateau, and other states as alarming.

Adams made this known in a statement released by his Special Media Assistant, Olawunmi Ojo, on Friday

He condemned the recent attacks in Benue State that led to the deaths of innocent people and displacement of communities, urging the federal government to adopt a “multifaceted response” to restore peace and development.

“If the Federal Government does not decentralise the security architecture of the country, no amount of prayers would save us from the unnecessary embarrassment of insecurity,”

Adams stated. He advocated for a layered security model that includes federal, state, and local government policing, as part of Nigeria’s long-overdue restructuring.

The OPC leader warned that continued insecurity undermines the nation’s economic progress and international image.

He attributed the recurring violence to communal conflicts, poor law enforcement, arms proliferation, political instability, poverty, and unemployment.

“The violence violates the right to life under Section 33 of our Constitution and disrupts agricultural activities the mainstay of local economies,” he said, adding that food insecurity and poverty are being worsened by unchecked attacks.

Adams also revealed that his office has reached out to South West governors, urging them to work with the Southwest Security Stakeholders Group, which comprises 14 private security outfits under his coordination.
