SDP Suspends National Chairman Gabam Over Alleged Financial Misconduct

The Social Democratic Party (SDP) is facing internal turmoil as its National Working Committee (NWC) has suspended the party’s National Chairman, Alhaji Shehu Gabam, alongside two other top officials.

The suspension, which takes immediate effect, was confirmed on Tuesday by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Araba Rufus Aiyenigba.

The affected officials include Nze Nnadi Clarkson, National Auditor, and Uchechukwu Chukwuma, National Youth Leader.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, the NWC cited serious allegations of financial misconduct as the reason for their action.

“In exercise of its exclusive powers as guaranteed in Article 19.1, 19.3(i), and 19.5 of the Party Constitution (2022 as amended).

“The National Working Committee has approved the immediate suspension of the National Chairman of the Party, Alhaji Shehu Musa Gabam, along with two members… over grave allegations of gross financial misconduct, embezzlement, misappropriation, and diversion of party funds,” the statement read.

According to the NWC, the suspension followed a meeting where “overwhelming evidence” was presented, linking the trio to unauthorised financial transactions and movement of party funds without due process.

This development comes on the heels of a separate protest earlier in the day where angry demonstrators reportedly pulled down the party’s national secretariat gate in Abuja, further exposing cracks within the party’s leadership.

The party has yet to announce who will assume Gabam’s position in acting capacity. As the 2027 general election approaches, the suspension has raised fresh concerns about the unity and preparedness of the SDP to compete nationally.
