Nollywood actress Mary Njoku has raised concerns about the continued relevance of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) in Nigeria’s tertiary education admission process.
Njoku expressed her confusion over why students who have already completed their secondary education and passed the Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE) still have to go through JAMB and post-UTME to gain university admission.
Taking to her Instastory, the actress wrote, “Why is it necessary to take the JAMB exam to gain admission into universities? Isn’t the SSCE sufficient? I don’t understand the need for JAMB + post-JAMB when the SSCE already shows we’ve completed secondary school.”

Her comments come in the wake of public outrage following mass failures recorded in the 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), conducted by JAMB.
Amid the backlash, the examination body acknowledged that some candidates received incorrect results due to errors in 157 of the 882 accredited centres. JAMB has since issued an apology and announced that affected candidates will be given another opportunity to retake the test.
JAMB Registrar, Prof. Is-haq Oloyede, revealed that a total of 379,997 candidates from Lagos and the South-East are scheduled to sit for the rescheduled exam beginning Friday, May 16.
