
In a significant development, President Bola Tinubu has approved the conversion of Yaba College of Technology (YABATECH) into a university.
This move is expected to bolster Nigeria’s educational landscape.
Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, broke the news during a visit to the institution on Friday, stating, “I discussed this with President Tinubu, and he approved it without hesitation. I am now awaiting the official memo and necessary protocols.”
Dr. Alausa praised YABATECH’s academic excellence, highlighting its impressive roster of over 200 staff members holding doctorate degrees.
“This institution is a legacy. With over 200 staff members holding doctorate degrees, it is more than ready to attain university status,” he emphasized.
The minister urged YABATECH to prioritize innovation, vocational skills, and emerging technologies like Artificial Intelligence, Robotics, and Coding.

He stressed the government’s commitment to Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics (STEM), and Entrepreneurship, citing their crucial role in national progress.
YABATECH’s Rector, Dr. Ibraheem Abdul, welcomed the development, reiterating the institution’s commitment to excellence and innovation.
“We aim to be a university of technical and vocational education, driving innovation and solving societal challenges for national advancement,” he added.
The proposed upgrade is subject to approval by the National Assembly and presidential assent.
Once finalized, YABATECH will officially become a university, marking a significant milestone in Nigeria’s educational history.
