15 Worst Defenders To Ever Play In The Premier League

“Offense wins games, defence wins championships” is a football adage. Great teams usually have solid defences. The Premier League has produced John Terry, Rio Ferdinand, Sol Campbell, Virgil Van Dijk, and Nemanja Vidic. Some excellent centre-backs have failed terribly and been branded “the worst defender.” The following players weren’t always bad, but their play was so bad that they’ll be remembered forever. When you think of a worse defender Harry Maguire, who plays for Manchester United comes to your mind, though he had a good record in Leicester. On this note, we highlight the 15 worst defenders to ever play in the Premier League.

15. Materazzi

Materazzi was Inter Milan’s top central defender. Materazzi was sent off four times in 27 games for Everton in 1998 before joining Inter Milan. He was sent home after 10 months.

14. Rigobert Song

Some call Song one of the greatest African defenders ever, yet his four years in the Premier League were terrible. Song’s defensive error affected West Ham and Liverpool.

13. Oileg Luzhnly

Luzhny only made 75 appearances for Arsenal in four years, and fans were always terrified he would be brought on as a substitute. Luzhny left Arsenal for Wolverhampton Wanderers in 2003, but the club was relegated that year.

12. Quinn

Quinn played for three clubs in three years and only made 43 appearances. After he left West Ham at age 28, no clubs were interested in signing him. West Ham, Sheffield United, and Newcastle United fans all agree he was one of their worst defenders.

11. Vega

Tottenham signed Vega for £4m from Cagliari, but the former Swiss international made no impact in 60 games.

10. Doherty

Spurs fans consider the former defender one of their worst. Doherty was a defensive liability at Tottenham and Norwich.

9. Degen Philip

Liverpool bought Degen from Borussia Dortmund on a free transfer after his 2008 Euros performance. He only played seven times for Liverpool in two years owing to injuries.

8. Danny Granville

Granville was never good for the Premier League despite helping Manchester City and Crystal Palace get promoted. He was also disappointed with Leeds United.

7. Tony Vidmar

Vidmar only made seven appearances for Middlesbrough in 2002 before being sold to Cardiff. Vidmar did well in the Scottish Premiership with Rangers.

6. Bramble

Bramble is a strange case since he may be a man of the match one game and horrible the next. Bramble lacked concentration while playing for Newcastle United, Wigan Athletic, and Sunderland.

5. Igor Stepanov

Arsenal bought Stepanov in 2000 for £1.75m to replace Tony Adams. He played 17 times in a terrible four-year stay with the Gunners and is known for his ‘performance’ in the 6-1 loss to Manchester United when he appeared so out of his depth that even Arsenal fans thought it slightly comical.

4. Hottiger

Hottiger started his premier league career at Newcastle United but lost his spot. He joined Everton in 1996 to revive his career but failed and was transferred after a year.

3. Hodgkiss

Hodgkiss was dubbed “the next Laurent Blanc” at West Brom. Hodgkiss only played nine times for the Baggies and never achieved his potential.

2. Kronkamp

Gérard Houllier recruited Kromkamp from Villarreal in exchange for Josemi, but his lack of pace was exploited by wingers.

1. Sinclair

Who can beat the clueless defender? How about one with poor defence and massive own goals? Sinclair was a terrible defender who often scored own goals. Sinclair had multiple chances to restore his career, but he always failed since he always beat his goalkeeper.
