Bruno Fernandes, a midfielder for Manchester United, had a poor performance against Arsenal in the Premier League on Saturday.
The Red Devils had a chance to improve their Champions League chances against Arsenal, but they were unable to do so following a mediocre performance at the Emirates.
There were a lot of good players, such as Cristiano Ronaldo, David de Gea, and Diogo Dalot, but they were all mixed up with some awful individual performances.
After looking out of sorts against Liverpool in midweek, Fernandes had another poor performance, highlighted by a costly penalty miss.
Aside from his penalty, he lost control 13 times, once on the edge of the box, which led to Granit Xhaka’s long-range goal.
In the 76th minute, his fury resulted in a yellow card. He got away with a late lunge on Nuno Tavares by chance.
Although Fernandes has been the club’s main attacking midfielder for the previous few months, his performances have been below par.
Despite this, he has been a consistent starter under interim manager Ralf Rangnick, with Jesse Lingard and Juan Mata seldom receiving a look-in.
It will be interesting to see if this shifts towards the middle of the week. Rangnick has made some wise choices, and Fernandes must go.
Rangnick may choose a double-six system (4-2-3-2) with two forwards up front if he does not want to deploy Lingard or Mata in the starting XI.
United trail fourth-placed Arsenal by six points, with a game in hand. With four games remaining, their chances of qualifying for the Champions League are slim.
United’s chances of finishing in the top four are slim. Their first objective should be to beat Chelsea on Thursday to break their dismal streak.
Given recent outcomes, it could be another challenging match. The clubs’ last three meetings have all resulted in stalemates. A repeat performance is not possible.
