What to do if your steering wheel locks up while driving.

When driving, the steering wheel regulates the vehicle’s direction. As long as you’re driving, you’re just tasked with controlling the wheel. That’s why getting stuck in traffic with a locked steering wheel is so frustrating. For a number of reasons, your car’s steering wheel can become jammed due to faulty locking mechanisms or technological issues.

In this article, I want to briefly discuss what to do if your steering wheel locks up while driving.

1. Change the Power Steering Pump.

Power steering pump malfunctions can be detected by listening for whining noises emanating from the vehicle’s hood. If you hear this, you may want to consider replacing or repairing the power steering pump. It’s possible to do all the work yourself if you’re an expert in the field of mechanics. If this is the case, you may want to think about enlisting professional assistance so that you can complete any necessary car repairs on time. Steering pump repair requires a custom-made pulley puller, not a regular one. You may easily get this service from a nearby car service center.

2. Remove Debris from the Steering Column.

Dirt, dust, and debris, to name a few, can jam the steering column’s interior. To avoid further complications, you should delete them as soon as possible if you suspect this.

3. Repair or Replace the Ignition Switch Cylinder.

The ignition cylinder is directly linked to the steering wheel lock. It is possible to unlock the steering wheel with your left hand by gently moving it left and right as though the cylinder were malfunctioning. The ignition cylinder can be inspected using this method.
