Nigerian fashion designer and gospel singer, Veekee James, has recounted how she battled with trauma after her marriage became the centre of discussions.

In an interview with actress Nancy Isime, shared on X on August 23, 2025, Veekee James noted that she became depressed after being accused of stealing her husband from a friend.

The gospel musician emphasised that the rumour about snatching her husband from a friend was not the only thing that got her depressed, but claims of sleeping with all of them also contributed to her depression.

“It was a story about how I stole him from a friend, and we were sleeping with each other, but so many of them were all lies. It almost put me into depression,” she said.

The musician further noted that it was her first time experiencing how

depression felt like.

“That was the first time in my life I got to understand what people who say they are depressed feel. I remember entering my room, and I didn’t come out for two days.

Bawumia tackles Bryan Acheampong over tribal bigotry comments

The 2024 presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has strongly condemned the use of tribal and religious bigotry against him during the party’s internal contest to elect a flagbearer.

Addressing party members on Sunday, August 24, 2025, Dr Bawumia expressed concern that some presidential aspirants have resorted to propaganda rather than addressing the real reasons behind the NPP’s defeat in the 2024 general elections.

Social media users roast Bryan Acheampong over tribal politics jibe at Bawumia

“As we prepare to go into the primaries, I am very, very concerned and troubled that some of our presidential aspirants have embarked on a religious and tribal bigotry and propaganda against me in a desperate attempt to win votes. They totally ignore all the data and findings about why we lost the 2024 elections and want to mislead the delegates and the party with sad propaganda,” he stated.

The former Vice President warned that such tribal and religious comments could cost the NPP support in Kusasi-dominated areas.

“Since 1965, there have been 11 elections in Ghana, and if you look at the performance of our tradition in the six Bawku Zone seats, the results show that our challenges there long predate my candidacy,” he explained.

He listed election years from 1965 through to 2024, showing that the NPP’s record in the area has consistently fluctuated between zero and two seats, long before he entered frontline politics.

His comments come after Dr Bryan Acheampong, a former Minister of Agriculture, stated that the NPP’s defeat in 2024 was partly due to the choice of Dr Bawumia as flagbearer.

Speaking recently to party members on Saturday, August 23, Dr Acheampong argued that while former Presidents John Agyekum Kufuor and Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo were able to secure votes in northern constituencies, Dr Bawumia’s candidacy was undermined by deep-rooted tribal rivalries.

“President Kufuor won all NPP votes in Kusasi and President Akufo-Addo also did the same thing, but because the fight is between two tribes, Mamprusis and Kusasis, and we elected a flagbearer from one of them, we lost from Oti Region, Upper East, Upper West and the Northern Region,” he said.

Dr Acheampong clarified that the defeat was not necessarily a reflection of Dr Bawumia’s competence or leadership but rather a matter of timing and circumstance.

“We lost all our seats because of the candidate we presented, and he could be a victim of circumstance and not his fault, but the timing didn’t favour him,” he added.

Meanwhile, the party has scheduled its presidential primaries for January 31, 2026.

Burnt cash? Here’s how to recover your money

0

A photo of burnt cedi notes A photo of burnt cedi notes

Have you ever wondered how to retrieve your money after it gets burnt, whether at home, in your shop, or at your workplace?

Such unfortunate incidents can be emotionally devastating, leaving victims feeling sad, confused, and frustrated as their hard-earned cash goes up in flames.

If the money is completely reduced to ashes, unfortunately, there’s nothing that can be done. Just know it is lost forever.

However, if only part of the notes is burnt, there’s good news! You may still be able to recover your money.

Cedi remains the only legal tender in Ghana – BoG Governor warns against dollarisation

According to the Bank of Ghana, partially burnt or mutilated currency notes remain legal tender. As long as the serial numbers are visible, you’re eligible to reclaim their value.

Here’s what to do:

Separate the partially burnt notes

Carefully identify and set aside notes that are only partially damaged.

Check for serial numbers

Look for the alphanumeric serial numbers printed on the front of the notes, on both the left and right sides. These are essential for verification.

Visit nearest police station

Take these damaged notes to the nearest police station for an extract report. While writing your statement, don’t forget to input the serial numbers of the notes and total value of the burnt amount you have at the time of filing the report.

Submit to any commercial bank or Bank of Ghana

Take the extract report along with the damaged notes to the Bank of Ghana or any commercial bank. Once verified, your money will be exchanged.

While some banks may not require a police report, it is strongly recommended to obtain one to avoid complications.

Fire victims can heave a sigh of relief with this process. However, it is important to remember that large sums of money should be stored securely, preferably in a bank.

Individuals and businesses are also encouraged to explore digital alternatives such as mobile money and electronic banking to reduce the risk of losing cash in fire-related incidents.

Sudan has booked their place in the semi-finals of the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) after defeating Algeria 4-2 on penalties in Zanzibar on Saturday evening.

The Falcons of Jediane, coached by Ghanaian tactician Kwesi Appiah, held their nerve in a tense encounter that ended 1-1 after extra time before triumphing in the shoot-out.

The match, played at the Amaan Stadium, was full of grit and drama as both teams fought hard for a place in the last four.

Watch how Kwasi Appiah’s Sudan thrashed Nigeria 4-0

After a goalless first half, Sudan took the lead in the 48th minute when Algerian defender Ayoub Ghezala diverted the ball into his own net following pressure from Musa Hussien.

Algeria, unbeaten in their last ten CHAN matches, responded strongly and deservedly equalized in the 73rd minute through Soufiane Bayazid.

With neither side able to find a winner after 120 minutes, penalties decided the contest.

Sudanese goalkeeper Mohamed Abooja emerged as the hero, saving two spot-kicks from Mehdi Merghem and Zakaria Draoui. Sudan converted four of their attempts through Walieldin Khidir, Mohamed Ahmed Saeed, Ahmed Tabanja, and Mohamed Tia Asad to seal a 4-2 victory.

The result means Sudan has now reached their third CHAN semi-final in history and remains unbeaten in the tournament, having already beaten Nigeria 4-0 and drawn with holders Senegal.

Kwesi Appiah reveals reason behind early success with Sudan

They will face Madagascar on Tuesday, August 26, at the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium in Dar es Salaam.

Algeria, who were finalists in 2022, exit the competition earlier than expected, leaving their quest for a maiden CHAN title still unfulfilled.

US-Uganda ties warm on the back of immigration pressures

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio (left) and Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni US Secretary of State Marco Rubio (left) and Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni

Uganda’s ties with Washington seem to be warming up, informed by immigration pressures the US government is facing to deal with illegal stays.

This week, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio had a phone call with Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni, focusing on bilateral cooperation. It was significant as the first call to Uganda under the Donald Trump administration.

The two sides had had a frosty relationship since last year when Uganda passed an anti-gay law, forcing the US and Western partners to suspend aid to Uganda. But that was during the Joe Biden’s tenure.

Mr Biden introduced sanctions against several Ugandan leaders following the approval of anti-gay legislation. Trump has seemed to adopt a more American-first policy but has not punished countries abroad for violating rights per se.

According to Rubio’s Principal Deputy Spokesperson Tommy Pigott, the two discussed the new deal between the two countries on cooperation on migration as well as reciprocal trade, and commercial ties.

“The Secretary also thanked Uganda for providing a model of regional stability including its valuable contributions to peacekeeping in East Africa,” statement reads.

The conversation between President Museveni and Secretary Rubio comes after the Ugandan Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed that they will host some of the deportees from the US.

According to Foreign Affairs Permanent Secretary Bagiire Vincent Waiswa, they strike the deal to welcome part of deportees after the US agreed for cooperation in the examination of protection, which Uganda had requested.

“The Agreement is in respect of Third Country Nationals who may not be granted asylum in the United States but are reluctant to or may have concerns about returning to their countries of origin,” Mr Waswa said in a statement, adding that the deal is a temporary arrangement that comes with conditions.

Although it is not clear how many deportees will be landing in Uganda, Mr Waswa said that part of the conditions in the deal states that individuals with criminal records and unaccompanied minors will not be accepted.

“Uganda also prefers that individuals from African countries shall be the ones transferred to Uganda. The two parties are working out the detailed modalities on how the agreement shall be implemented.”

The Ugandan government is yet to communicate on the kind of camp where the deportees will be hosted, as well as the amenities that will be needed.

It remains unclear how the two countries will run the program, which is expected to cost millions.

The deportees are among thousands of illegal immigrants in the US, who are being targeted by President Donald Trump in the ongoing crackdown to end illegal and undocumented migration in the US.

The US is seeking to reach an agreement with many countries to receive deportees who are currently being held in a detention prison.

Apart from Uganda, Honduras has also agreed to receive Spanish-speaking deportees from Latin American countries only.

TikTok Star Sexy Afrah, Confesses She Cheated On Her Husband And That Ended Her Marriage

0

Ghanaian TikTok sensation, Sexy Afrah, has opened up about the collapse of her marriage, admitting to mistakes she now regrets deeply. The revelation came during a candid interview with award-winning media personality Deloris Frimpong Manso on The Delay Show.

Afrah recounted that her marriage to a white man initially brought stability and support to her and her family. She described her husband as “very helpful and kind,” noting the vital role he played in their lives.

However, things began to unravel after a Ghanaian man, widely suspected to be social media personality Archipelago, started appearing regularly on her TikTok live sessions. According to Afrah, he boldly expressed his affection for her during those interactions, a development that gradually complicated her marriage.

She revealed that her husband had secured a UK visa for her at the time, but instead of handling the process alone, she went to pick it up in the company of the Ghanaian man, who even drove her to the embassy.

Afrah confessed that after persistent advances and emotional pressure, she gave in to the man’s demands and began an affair, a decision that led her to cheat on her husband.

Even after joining her husband in UK she continued to stay in touch with her Ghanaian boyfriend, spending long hours on calls with him, sometimes during nights when her husband is in bed. She introduced her Ghanaian boyfriend to her husband as a cousin while with her husband in the UK. As such, the unsuspecting husband didn’t interfere anytime she would be on phone with her supposed ‘cousin’.

The Ghanaian man later convinced her to return to Ghana and promised to provide her needs and that of her family.

Afrah believed him, and left her husband, whom she had only joined in the UK for three weeks, and returned to her Ghanaian lover. She lied to her husband that she her grandmother had paased on, and she needed to return to Ghana for the funeral.

Though the husband initially resisted, siting financial cost of the trip; given he had only flown her out of Ghana barely a month prior, her persistence eventually made him give in.

Sadly, the relationship she left her caring husband for, has also now hit the rocks.

Afrah also admitted lying about her White husband being a drug addict, to justify her leaving him. She disclosed her Ghanaian lover with whom she was cheating on her husband, made her say all those nasty stuff about her ex-husband.

The TikTok star admitted on The Delay Show that the affair was a grave mistake, one she continues to regret.

Hassan Ayariga Faces Possible Arrest as GTEC Intensifies Crackdown on his Fake Degrees”

0

Joy News reports that businessman and politician Hassan Ayariga, founder of the All People’s Congress (APC), is set to face arrest following ongoing investigations by the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) into the use of alleged fake academic degrees.

According to the report, GTEC has intensified its nationwide crackdown on individuals and institutions suspected of acquiring or issuing unaccredited certificates. The operation, which began earlier this month, has already led to several arrests and the closure of questionable educational entities.

Mr. Ayariga’s name reportedly surfaced during the investigations, raising questions about the authenticity of some of his academic qualifications. Authorities have hinted that he may soon be invited or compelled by law enforcement agencies to assist in the probe.

The development has sparked widespread debate in political and academic circles. Supporters of Ayariga describe the move as a political witch-hunt aimed at tarnishing his image ahead of future elections. Critics, however, insist that accountability and transparency must be upheld regardless of political status.

GTEC officials have maintained that the crackdown is not targeted at any individual but rather seeks to protect the credibility of Ghana’s educational system. “We are committed to ensuring that every certificate used in the country is genuine and backed by accreditation,” a GTEC spokesperson reportedly told Joy News.

As of now, Hassan Ayariga has not publicly responded to the allegations. Joy News sources indicate that security agencies are preparing the necessary steps to formally engage him in the coming days.

The case adds to a growing list of high-profile figures under scrutiny in the fake degrees scandal, highlighting the deepening concerns about integrity within Ghana’s academic and political landscape.

Bawumia slams religious and tribal bigotry targeting his candidacy – Citinewsroom – Comprehensive News in Ghana

0

2024 New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has condemned what he describes as tribal and religious propaganda being directed at him by fellow NPP flagbearer aspirants ahead of the party’s 2026 primaries.

Addressing party faithful on Sunday, August 24, Dr. Bawumia expressed concern over the trajectory of internal campaign tactics, warning that such strategies not only lack substance but also risk deepening divisions within the party.

“As we go into the primaries, I am very concerned and troubled that some of our presidential aspirants have embarked on religious and tribal bigotry and propaganda against me. In a desperate attempt to win votes, they totally ignore the data and findings on why we lost the 2024 election and want to mislead delegates and the party wings with such propaganda,” he said.

Dr. Bawumia cited the longstanding Mamprusi-Kusasi ethnic tensions in the north, disclosing that a fellow aspirant had allegedly instructed party delegates to vote against him solely because he is Mamprusi, suggesting it would harm the party’s prospects in Kusasi areas

“An aspirant has said delegates should not vote for me because I am a Mamprusi man and that I will lose votes in the Kusasi and other areas. This is very unfortunate and demonstrates a complete lack of understanding of the situation,” Bawumia revealed.

His remarks were in response to comments by Abetifi MP and fellow flagbearer hopeful, Dr. Bryan Acheampong, who attributed the NPP’s 2024 electoral loss to tribal dynamics surrounding Bawumia’s candidacy.

Addressing party members on Saturday, August 23, Dr. Bryan Acheampong argued that Dr. Bawumia’s nomination had alienated segments of the northern electorate due to historic ethnic rivalries. He suggested that past NPP leaders, including former Presidents John Agyekum Kufuor and Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, had garnered broader northern support by being perceived as more neutral in the region’s tribal politics.

However, Dr. Bawumia rejected this narrative, insisting that such tribal arguments are unfounded and divert attention from the real reasons behind the party’s 2024 defeat.

He urged fellow aspirants to prioritise data-driven evaluations and genuine party unity over divisive rhetoric, warning that failure to do so could undermine both the primaries and the general election.

Ridge Hospital Saga: Many people pursue nursing for job security not passion

Kwadwo Poku is the Executive Director of INSTEPR Kwadwo Poku is the Executive Director of INSTEPR

The Executive Director of the Institute for Energy Policies and Research (INSTEPR), Kwadwo Poku, has weighed in on the alleged assault case at the Greater Accra Regional Hospital popularly known as Ridge Hospital, condemning the violence but also raising concerns about the conduct of some nurses in the current times.

In a snippet from an interview with Prime Insight, shared by SikaOfficial on X on August 23, Poku argued that while any act of assault on health professionals is unacceptable, some do not always uphold the ethics of their profession.

He claimed that many people now choose nursing not out of a genuine passion for caring, but primarily for the financial allowances they receive during training and the job security that comes after graduation.

Ridge Hospital: One arrested in connection with assault on health workers

According to Poku, this has caused the profession to lose its “once noble status.”

“Considering the nature of work they do at health facilities; I can’t go near it. So, I have a lot of respect for nurses. However, recent conducts of some nurses such as actively engaging with their phones when patients direly need care, leaves much to be desired.

“It appears most actors in the nursing profession opted for the career merely for job security and incentives,” he stated, suggesting that this mindset contributes to a decline in professional standards.

His reaction follows an alleged assault on a nurse at Ridge Hospital, a development that sparked public outrage.

Ridge hospital assault should cost health minister his job – Adomako Kissi

The alleged assault came to light after a viral video showed relatives of an accident victim physically attacking staff in Ridge Hospital’s emergency department.

In response, the Minister of Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, visited the hospital to reassure healthcare workers, ordered tightened security, and launched an investigation.

A committee was tasked to probe the incident, administratively by the Ministry and criminally by the police, with public assurances that the law will take its course.

Arrests have already been confirmed, though details of suspects, including whether Ralph Saint Williams, the instigator, is among them, remain undisclosed.

The Committee has indicated that it will present the report to the health minister on August 25.

I resigned from TV3 due to a prophecy- MzGee

0

Ghanaian media personality Gloria Akpene Nyarku, widely known as MzGee, has opened up about the real reason behind her sudden resignation from TV3.

According to her, a chilling prophecy about death pushed her to step away from her role at the station.

In a recent video MzGee disclosed that she received a prophecy suggesting that a television show host would die during a reality show. Although the prophecy was not delivered directly to her, she said it unsettled her deeply and influenced her decision.

She explained that after hearing the prophecy, she felt the need to act immediately.

“I resigned from TV3 because of a prophecy. And that prophecy said, ‘I see someone on television, hosting a reality show, and that person will fall and die.’ After receiving this prophecy, I decided to step down,” she explained.

MzGee also addressed critics who had previously questioned her decision to leave TV3. She pointed out that many speculated she left out of troublemaking or internal conflicts, but the truth was far deeper.

“For those of you who wondered why I resigned and even labeled me a troublemaker, the truth is I didn’t know where the death mentioned in the prophecy was going to come from. But the prophecy clearly said it would happen on a reality show. And if you know my career, you know I used to host Mentor and we were getting close to that time of the year,” she continued.

The media personality further revealed that the prophecy was not the only sign she experienced. She recalled a series of dreams about death that made her uneasy and convinced her that her life was at risk.

“Would I have ignored this prophecy, even though the man of God didn’t specifically say I should resign? Should I have gone ahead, stood on that stage, presented, and then fallen to my death? When I received the prophecy, my dreams were already warning me that something was wrong. That’s why I’m doing this video to say that yes, there are prophecies, but sometimes your own spirit also alerts you. Sometimes you even see it in your dreams. I kept dreaming of death over and over again,” she revealed.

Sharing how disturbing the experience was, MzGee noted that she constantly felt surrounded by death either seeing herself among the dead or hearing people say they had seen her dead in dreams.

“At one point, I kept asking myself is it that I’m seeing myself among people I already know who have died? Or is it because others kept saying they had seen me dead? The truth is, death was haunting me, that’s how serious it became. And then came this prophecy. I told myself, this man of God has touched on something real. He didn’t tell me to resign, but I chose to,” she said.

Finally, MzGee addressed allegations that she had resigned due to jealousy of her colleagues. She said that at the time, it would have been difficult to reveal her true reason without being mocked or doubted.

“So let me address those who claimed I resigned because I was jealous of a colleague. How could I have told anyone back then that I had received a prophecy and resigned because of it? People would have said, ‘This girl isn’t serious; she believes in prophets.’ And when nothing happened, the same people would mock me for believing. Yet, if it did happen, those same people would turn around and say, ‘She was warned, but she didn’t act on it,’” she explained.

Ghanaians Applaud Speaker of Parliament for Taking Bold Decision Against Supreme Court Writs Served

News Hub Creator12h

Support for Speaker of Parliament Alban Kingsford Sumana Bagbin has surged across Ghana following his bold refusal to comply with writs issued by the Supreme Court. These writs aimed to block the Speaker’s ruling on four vacant parliamentary seats, a decision that has stirred considerable controversy.

Speaker Bagbin returned the writs to the Supreme Court, stating that the court’s action overstepped its boundaries and interfered with Parliament’s independence. He emphasized that the Constitution and parliamentary rules clearly assign Parliament the exclusive authority to determine vacancies and manage its membership.

The decision comes amid a tense political backdrop, with the ruling NPP facing criticism over the vacant seats. Many Ghanaians have echoed Bagbin’s view that the Supreme Court’s intervention is politically motivated, noting potential influence from the executive branch due to presidential appointments of judges.

Online platforms and public forums have seen an outpouring of support for the Speaker. “Leaders like Bagbin ensure that democratic institutions remain independent and strong. Parliament should not be overruled,” one commentator said. Another added, “This is courage in action, and the Speaker’s stance is commendable.”

The debate over the vacant seats has reignited conversations on checks and balances within Ghana’s democracy. For many citizens, Bagbin’s firm position represents both a defense of parliamentary authority and a commitment to upholding democratic norms. Observers anticipate that the matter will continue to influence political discussions as both legislative and judicial bodies navigate this critical issue.

For now, public sentiment strongly favors Speaker Bagbin, who is seen as reinforcing Parliament’s right to function without external interference an essential principle in Ghana’s democratic system.

According to the GES, the academic calendars are intended to provide consistency and smooth running of the school year across all second cycle institutions.

Speaking in an interview with Ghanasportspage, Appiah stressed that the tournament’s primary value lies in giving the team competitive minutes ahead of the new season.

“Even if we lose 10-0, I don’t care,” Appiah said. “The most important thing is that they are playing games. If I were Karim Zito, I would have used the youth team for the tournament. The main competition is the league and the Confederation Cup.”

Kotoko are currently bottom of the Top 4 standings without a point from two matches, following their opening-day 2-1 defeat to Bibiani Gold Stars.

They face Hearts of Oak on Sunday, August 24, 2025, in their final fixture.

The GHALCA Top 4 serves as a preseason competition featuring the top four finishers from the previous Ghana Premier League season.

Kinbu SHS headmistress speaks out

Kinbu Senior High School, nestled in the heart of Tudu, Accra, is surrounded by the vibrant pulse of commerce.

From dusk to dawn, traders and market women flood the area, calling out to customers and engaging in brisk business. But for the school’s headmistress, Sylvia M. Letcher-Teye, this daily hustle has become more than just background noise. It is now a growing crisis.

In a desperate bid to secure space for trade, many market women and men have turned the school’s entrance into an unofficial ‘shopping centre’.

The noise emanating from this market square has become unbearable for students, and it is gradually affecting their academic performance.

The reason is simple! They are unable to concentrate in class.

Unfortunately, this is not the only challenge faced by both students and school management.

According to the headmistress, the battle is no longer just about books and discipline, but about reclaiming the school’s physical space and dignity.

During a recent visit by Korle Klottey MP, Dr Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings, the headmistress disclosed that the market traders have turned the school compound into a dumpsite.

She recounted how the school had to pay GH¢800 to clear a heap of rubbish from the compound. This amount, she said, was an unbudgeted expense.

The headmistress further accused the market women of urinating in and around the school premises, a situation she strongly condemned.

“We suggested to the community members that, at the very least, they should leave the frontage of the school for us, so we can have some sanity around here. They are contributing to our problems,” she told the Korle Klottey MP.

“When they collect their fees, they dump their rubbish into our compound. Every Monday, I call the unit committee member, Fataw, to come and inspect what is happening. There was a time we had to call someone to come and collect the refuse, and we spent over GH¢800 doing so,” the headmistress added.

In response, the Korle Klottey MP urged the headmistress to submit a formal petition detailing the problems faced by the school for swift action to be taken.

“If you don’t mind petitioning me as your Member of Parliament, please do so. There’s a huge security dimension to this, and it goes beyond your personal safety. There’s a lot happening. Please do this as soon as you can,” Dr. Zanetor stated.

Bryan Acheampong Sparks Backlash Over Tribal Comments At NPP Flagbearership Campaign Gathering

0

New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer hopeful, Dr. Bryan Acheampong, has come under fire after remarks widely condemned as tribalistic during a meeting with defeated 2024 parliamentary candidates.

The Abetifi MP and former Minister of Food and Agriculture hosted the candidates at his Rock City Hotel in Mpraeso, but what began as a strategy session ended in unease, with several attendees describing his comments as divisive and dangerous for the party’s unity.

Dr. Acheampong urged delegates to reject former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as the party’s 2028 flagbearer, arguing that his Mamprusi roots would make it difficult for the NPP to win votes in the Upper East Region due to the longstanding Mamprusi–Kusasi conflict.

“Because the conflict is between these two people and we brought one of them as our candidate, it made us lose seats in the 2024 election. We cannot wait for this situation to be resolved and stay in opposition because the suspicion will not go away,” Dr. Bryan Acheampong told the gathering.

His comments, however, drew murmurs of disapproval from several participants. Zak Rahman, the party’s 2024 parliamentary candidate for Ayawaso East, openly rejected the tribal framing.

He countered that the NPP’s electoral struggles went far beyond the Upper East, pointing to the loss of about 50 parliamentary seats nationwide, including in traditional strongholds.

Rahman explained that even in Accra constituencies such as 37, Kanda, and Asylum Down, typically NPP strongholds, support declined due to voter apathy. “It would be wrong to blame Dr. Bawumia for the NPP’s presidential and parliamentary defeats due to his tribe,” he argued, calling instead for the party to “unite and come together” for victory.

Other attendees also expressed disappointment. One said, “It is quite unfortunate, and I was very disturbed and disappointed by such tribal and divisive comments. Many of my colleagues seated close to me also expressed disapproval.”

“I have a good relationship with Bryan Acheampong, but I know what is good for the party and which candidate can unite us for the NPP and give us victory. I am very disappointed in Bryan for such unfounded tribal comments, which only divide and weaken the NPP.”

A candidate from the Western Region questioned the logic of Acheampong’s argument: “Some of our candidates ought to treat us with respect when they invite us. We went into an election and lost about 50 parliamentary seats across the country, not only in the Upper East. If you go back to 2020, we lost close to 90 seats, and you invite us and start blaming Bawumia.”

“How many seats did we have in Upper East, and how many did we lose? There is no logic in Bryan’s comments, and I believe it is only influenced by tribal hatred, which is shocking coming from someone who wants to lead the party.”

Another aspirant from the Ashanti Region lamented the turn the flagbearership race is taking.

“Our party is already suffering from tribal and religious labelling, and I would have wished that leaders seeking to lead us would have rather shown us some substance in their messaging. Inviting us all the way here to tell us we should not vote for a particular candidate because he belongs to this or that tribe is the lowest anybody can go. I am upset and so are many of my colleagues here.”

The backlash has since spilled onto social media, where party supporters have condemned Dr. Acheampong for what they describe as reckless and divisive rhetoric.

The Assistant Northern Regional Secretary of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Aniwaba KB Jeremiah, has condemned the recent remarks by Abetifi MP and NPP flagbearer hopeful, Dr Bryan Acheampong.

Dr Acheampong, addressing some party supporters on August 23, argued that the NPP’s 2024 defeat was largely due to what he called “tribal dynamics” surrounding Dr Bawumia’s candidature.

CHAN 2024: Kwesi Appiah’s Sudan edge Algeria on penalties to reach semi-finals – Ghana Latest Football News, Live Scores, Results

0

Sudan have booked their place in the semi-finals of the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) after defeating Algeria 4-2 on penalties in Zanzibar on Saturday evening.

Sudan converted four of their attempts through Walieldin Khidir, Mohamed Ahmed Saeed, Ahmed Tabanja and Mohamed Tia Asad to seal a 4-2 victory.

The result means Sudan have now reached their third CHAN semi-final in history and remain unbeaten in the tournament, having already beaten Nigeria 4-0 and drawn with holders Senegal.

They will face Madagascar on Tuesday, August 26, at the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium in Dar es Salaam.

Algeria, who were finalists in 2022, exit the competition earlier than expected, leaving their quest for a maiden CHAN title still unfulfilled.

Crackdown on Fake Titles: We must move from ‘title worship’ to performance

Professor Godfred Bokpin is an Ghanaian economist Professor Godfred Bokpin is an Ghanaian economist

A Professor of Finance at the University of Ghana Business School, Professor Godfred Alufar Bokpin, has called for a shift in Ghana’s culture of “title worship” to a focus on productivity and performance.

Speaking on the JoyNews’ Newsfile on August 23, Professor Bokpin argued that while the misuse of academic and honorary titles needs to be addressed, the country must place a higher value on tangible results.

“As a country, we should move beyond that. We should be driven by productivity, by performance, that should be our consideration rather than we seem to worship titles and parade all these things,” he said.

Strengthening GTEC’s Mandate: A call for lawful and impartial regulation

He challenged individuals to justify their titles by asking, “What have you done? What is the transformation? What is the productivity?”

Professor Bokpin also challenged those who have earned their titles legitimately to ensure their qualifications translate into a positive impact on teaching, research, and society.

EXPLAINER: Understanding the mandate of GTEC

“Even those who have acquired it genuinely and through the hard work, how are we using it to impact society? How is it reflecting in how we engage students, teaching and the rest?” he questioned.

While he supports Ghana Tertiary Education Commission’s (GTEC) regulation to “sanitise the sector,” he believes it must be accompanied by clear guidelines and education on the proper use of titles.

Africa’s richest country opens freight rail network to private firms

South Africa will open its freight rail network to private operators, the government said Friday, in a bid to improve efficiency as state-owned Transnet struggles with chronic bottlenecks.

Transnet, which oversees the nation’s rail and port services, has been hampered by equipment shortages, maintenance delays, and widespread cable theft, prompting calls for greater private sector participation, according to Reuters.

10 fastest-growing trading nations in Africa

Transport Minister Barbara Creecy said 11 out of 25 applicants had qualified to advance to the negotiation and contracting phase, though she did not name them. Logistics firm Grindrod confirmed it had secured access.

The companies aren’t replacing Transnet Freight Rail, they’re supplementing its operations by adding extra capacity to the volumes it already carries.

Long-term freight growth

Transnet’s freight volumes fell to 152 million metric tons in 2023/24, down from a peak of 226 million in 2017/18. The new operators are expected to add 20 million tons annually from the next financial year, to reach 250 million tons by 2029.

The operators have been allocated slots across 41 routes, mainly for bulk commodities such as coal, iron ore, chrome, manganese, sugar, and fuel. Contracts will run between one and 10 years and require safety permits, suitable rolling stock, and port access.

The government has already extended 149 billion rand ($8.4 billion) in guarantees to support Transnet’s turnaround, and the company is seeking an additional 35 billion rand in infrastructure funding this year.

Ghana’s Brandon Thomas-Asante shines in Coventry City vs Queens Park clash

Ghana international Brandon Thomas-Asante plays for Coventry City Ghana international Brandon Thomas-Asante plays for Coventry City

Ghana international Brandon Thomas-Asante was in blistering form for Coventry City in their Championship clash against Queens Park Rangers on Saturday.

The Black Stars attacker started and played the full throttle of the match as his outfit cruised to a resounding 7-1 victory over their opponents in a thrilling clash at the Coventry Building Society Arena.

Thomas-Asante played a pivotal role by scoring and registering two assists, contributing to his side’s emphatic victory over QPR.

The Ghanaian attacker was simply unplayable on the day, delivering a Man-of-the-Match performance to inspire the Sky Blues to a massive home win.

USA international Haji Wright shot Coventry into the lead after just 12 minutes before Thomas-Asante doubled the advantage for the hosts in the 23rd minute.

In the 35th minute, Jack Rudoni extended the lead for Coventry before Haji Wright found the net again to make it 4-0, following an assist from the Ghanaian forward.

Shortly before the half-time break, Thomas-Asante set up Jack Rudoni to score his second goal of the match as the hosts went into the interval with a commanding 5-0 lead.

Coventry City continued their dominance in the second half, scoring two additional goals to snatch an impressive victory on home turf.

After the restart, Denmark international Victor Torp fired a brace to cement victory for Coventry, with Richard Kone pulling one back in stoppage time.

Why are UK leaders cosying up to the brutal despots in Beijing?

0

Chloe Cheung never takes the same route home twice in succession. On the streets of Leeds where she lives and works, she carries self protection devices, including alarms and air tags, in case she is kidnapped.

It is the same when she’s on her frequent visits to London. Cheung, a slender, fragile figure, is 20 years old. But despite her childlike appearance, she has a £100,000 bounty on her head.

She never thought life in Britain would be like this. When Cheung left Hong Kong for this country with her family in 2020, she believed she was coming to a safe haven for free speech and democracy.

Having fled the violent suppression of protests in her homeland, cutting ties with friends and relatives, she considered the UK – with its special responsibility for Hong Kongers – her final hope.

Yet, amid harassment and constant threats from Beijing’s agents since her arrival here, she has received minimal support from the British police.

And over the past year, she has watched in horror as the Labour government has cosied up to the Chinese regime responsible for her exile.

In just a few weeks’ time, business minister Jonathan Reynolds will fly to Beijing in an attempt to reopen trade negotiations – talks which were suspended by the then-Conservative government in response to China’s brutal 2019 crackdown on pro-democracy activists in Hong Kong.

It has also been reported that Sir Keir Starmer himself will visit China early next year.

Chloe Cheung is one of a string of courageous dissidents to launch withering attacks on the way the Prime Minister has been kowtowing to China

Cheung is one of a string of courageous dissidents to launch withering attacks on the way the British Prime Minister has been kowtowing to China.

Along with other fearless activists now exiled in the UK – as well as some who bravely remain outspoken in Hong Kong – she has hit out at the determination of the Government to curry Beijing’s favour, with successive visits to the country by Labour ministers and pro-China policies, while notably failing to stand up for human rights there.

These warnings come at a critical moment, for Starmer is on the cusp of allowing a new Chinese mega-embassy to be built in London, which critics fear could be used as a spy hub.

Meanwhile in Hong Kong, the ‘sham’ trial of British national and free speech campaigner Jimmy Lai – who faces charges of sedition and colluding with foreign forces and has been detained in solitary confinement since 2020 – is reaching its conclusion.

This all comes as the region’s pro-democracy movement appears on the verge of collapse.

Which makes the defiance of Cheung and others in the face of Beijing’s tyrannical regime all the more poignant. For it serves as a reminder of what Britain – with its centuries-long tradition of liberal democracy – might be about to sell down the river.

It was Christmas Eve 2024 when Cheung found out she had a bounty on her head.

She had not been formally notified of it by the Beijing authorities but was alerted to the fact by a friend. She barely recognised the picture of the girl staring back at her as she scrolled through her phone.

The 20-year-old fled the violent suppression of protests in Hong Kong, cutting ties with friends and relatives
The 20-year-old fled the violent suppression of protests in Hong Kong, cutting ties with friends and relatives

On her arrest warrant, alongside allegations of inciting secession and endangering national security, was a photograph of her geekish, bespectacled self, aged 11. The juxtaposition of her pre-teen innocence and the severity of the charges against her was both laughable and terrifying, exposing the extent of Beijing’s paranoia and its willingness to target anyone who defies its authority.

Before she left the territory, Cheung had played a fleeting part in the pro-democracy protests that erupted across Hong Kong in 2019. She was just 14 when she attended a demonstration there against a new extradition law designed to make it easier for Hong Kong to send criminal suspects to China.

The brutal crackdown by Beijing, underpinned by new national security laws passed in 2020, caused more than 150,000 Hong Kongers to seek refuge in Britain.

Some, including Cheung, defied the long arm of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) and continued to speak out against its authoritarian regime.

She was invited to speak at the UN when still a teenager and now works for The Committee for Freedom in Hong Kong Foundation, which advocates for democracy.

In December, China issued the arrest warrant for her, as well as for three other UK-based exiles: Carmen Lau, 30, Tony Chung, 24, and Chung Kim-wah, 65.

The warrants are not empty threats. Both Cheung and Lau say they have been spied on and followed in London, while their neighbours have been sent letters, allegedly by the CCP, offering one million HK dollars – nearly £100,000 – to turn them in.

On her arrest warrant, alongside allegations of inciting secession and endangering national security, was a photograph of her geekish, bespectacled self, aged 11
On her arrest warrant, alongside allegations of inciting secession and endangering national security, was a photograph of her geekish, bespectacled self, aged 11

But the attitude of the British police has been perplexing to say the least.

In March, Lau was sent a ‘memorandum of understanding’ by Thames Valley Police, seen by the Daily Mail, in which it requested she ‘cease any activity that is likely to put you at risk’ and ‘avoid attending public gatherings’.

Cheung says she received similar advice from the Met, but not in the form of a written request.

They and fellow activists argue this approach is tantamount to encouraging ‘self-censorship’ – the very thing they have come to the UK to avoid. Lau says it ‘mirrors the outcome the Chinese are seeking’: to silence her.

Xi Jinping could almost have written the letter himself.

The activists also bemoan the lack of a dedicated hotline for exiles – they have simply been told to dial 999 – in contrast to the US, which has specialist FBI agents to deal with ‘transnational repression’.

Thames Valley Police said its guidance was part of its ‘routine approach to prevention’ and ‘it is the choice of the individual whether they follow this advice’.

Needless to say, Lau and Cheung have not chosen to do so. In fact, they believe that by speaking out, they are protecting themselves.

The pair point to the reopening in recent weeks of extradition arrangements with Hong Kong, which would allow the UK to consider requests from Beijing to return criminal suspects on an ad hoc basis.

British national and free speech campaigner Jimmy Lai, who faces charges of sedition and colluding with foreign forces, has been detained in solitary confinement in Hong Kong since 2020
British national and free speech campaigner Jimmy Lai, who faces charges of sedition and colluding with foreign forces, has been detained in solitary confinement in Hong Kong since 2020

Campaigners question why the Government is restarting extradition arrangements now, and what ministers are seeking in return.

Ministers have said they would not allow political cases to be returned. But critics fear China would go after dissidents on other charges, such as fraud, as it has done in the past.

Cheung says she does not trust the UK Government’s ‘ability to identify whether a case is legitimate or not’. And by raising her profile as a political exile, she hopes Westminster will see through any attempt by Beijing to extradite her on other, spurious charges.

Still, the CCP has other means of reaching its targets.

In 2022, a pro-democracy protester was dragged into the Chinese consulate in Manchester and beaten up in a ‘barbaric’ attack.

Incidents such as this raise concerns over plans for China’s new £255million mega-embassy.

If built, it would sit opposite the Tower of London on the site of the former Royal Mint and would be China’s largest outpost in Europe, with an internal floor area exceeding 563,000 sq ft.

Critics fear it will be used as a centre for espionage with its colossal presence and manpower harnessed to target dissidents.

Until recently, ministers appeared willing to back the plan. But this month, Angela Rayner, in her role as Housing Secretary, ordered China to explain why it has redacted blueprints for two suites and a tunnel inside the building ‘for security reasons’ – amid fears the basement could be converted into ‘spy dungeons’.

A final decision will be made before September 9.

Cheung and others are firmly opposed to the plan. ‘They don’t need that much space for an embassy,’ she says. ‘We know that it will be a surveillance hub. They just shouldn’t do it.’ Citing the Manchester attack, she says it is only a matter of time before someone disappears, or is killed.

The mega-embassy is seen as a key bargaining chip in the ‘normalisation’ of relations between the UK and China, as Labour seeks closer cooperation on trade and energy.

Jimmy Lai's stien Lai, son of Jimmy Lai, who divides his time between London and Taiwan, wrote to Sir Keir Starmer earlier this year requesting a meeting regarding his father - but to no avail
Jimmy Lai’s son Sebastien, who divides his time between London and Taiwan, wrote to Sir Keir Starmer earlier this year requesting a meeting regarding his father – but to no avail

Lau, as a former politician, understands that the two countries must work together. But not at the cost of human freedoms.

‘I feel less safe because the UK’s language towards China and Hong Kong is changing,’ she says. ‘I do not want to put it that way, but undoubtedly, the new Government has a different priority. It seems they compromise human rights for economic interests.’

It is a sentiment echoed by Sebastien Lai, son of Jimmy Lai, the British national and founder of the pro-democracy Apple Daily newspaper, who has been languishing in solitary confinement in a maximum-security Hong Kong jail for the past four and a half years.

Apple Daily, a regular critic of the CCP, was forced to shut down in 2021 shortly after Lai was arrested for his part in pro-democracy protests. Now 77, his health has deteriorated significantly.

The concluding arguments in his trial on separate sedition and collusion charges began this week after being delayed due to Lai requiring treatment for heart palpitations.

His son believes the verdict is a foregone conclusion – Beijing wants a guilty verdict and will get one – but harbours hopes that the UK can still secure his release. If, that is, the Prime Minister is moved to.

Sebastien, 30, who now divides his time between London and Taiwan, wrote to Sir Keir Starmer earlier this year requesting a meeting regarding his father, but to no avail.

He believes the UK is too ready to concede to Chinese demands, without making his father’s release a condition of any deal.

Britain should not ‘bend the knee’ to trade with China, he says. Sebastien highlights the extradition agreement, the embassy and the UK’s failure to designate China as a high-tier threat on its foreign influence register as evidence of its supplicant approach – one that stands in stark contrast to his father’s.

‘My father stayed in Hong Kong to stand up for his beliefs of democracy and freedom that underpin British society,’ he says. ‘Whether he dies in jail or not, it doesn’t change what he stood for. But if he does die, it does change what we stand for as a country.’

A UK Government spokesman said Lai’s case is a ‘priority’ and the Foreign Secretary David Lammy met with Sebastien in June and called on Hong Kong to ‘end its politically motivated prosecution and immediately release Jimmy Lai’.

The spokesman added that any attempt to ‘coerce, intimidate, harass and harm’ dissidents living in the UK ‘will never be tolerated’ and that it was ‘quick to support individuals at heightened risk’.

Jimmy Lai is one of 781 political prisoners currently in Hong Kong, with the overall number to have been locked up since June 2019 now close to 2,000.

The national security laws that were imposed by Beijing the following year have had a chilling effect across society. Its far-reaching diktat has imposed the CCP’s view on school curricula, books and mobile games, while journalists and artists are ‘blacklisted’ or subject to ‘random’ tax audits to keep them in line.

Selina Cheng, chair of the Hong Kong Journalists Association, says the Chinese government accused her of underreporting her income by half and demanded she repay her taxes. Her associates have also received anonymous letters alleging wrongdoing in her work as a reporter.

Publications now self-censor not only on the overtly sensitive topics of democracy, but any subject that may involve a critique of government policy, she says.

More than 60 journalists have been detained since 2019.

Political opposition has been effectively quashed, with electoral reforms ensuring only pro-Beijing ‘patriots’ can run in elections.

In the meantime, it’s clear that those who chose to leave have done so at great personal cost.

Carmen Lau has not spoken to her parents since she arrived in the UK. She can only hear news of them through others.

Who leaves Biggie’s House tonight?

0

As we enter the fourth week of the tenth edition of the Big Brother Naija show, the stakes are getting higher and the pendulum of eviction keeps swinging ominously. Where the pendulum strikes a chord tonight is a guess as good as anyone could venture.

Out of the 29 Housemates that started the journey only 24 remain. And out of these 24 Housemates 20 are all up for eviction this night. Only 4 escaped the eviction hammer to be sitting pretty tonight. And those are Zita, who is the Head of House, followed by two other Housemates, Faith and Mensan, who she saved by her power as Head of House and of course, Jason Jae, who emerged as the most influential player of the week.

The last two consecutive Sundays saw 4 Housemates exited the show, in the persons of Danboskid and Ibifubara, and then Kayikunmi and Otega, last Sunday. Sabrina walked away from the show on health grounds.

Power of social media

Ibifubara, Kayikunmi and Otega who have all been evicted didn’t exactly come to the House loaded with a strong firepower of social media following. Although Danboskid came loaded enough but it appears there were some grave things he wasn’t doing right.

Beyond social media power

If there’s anything we have learnt from 10 years of the roller-coaster reality show, it is that it takes more than a couple of factors to go the distance.

Beyond social media power, ardent followers of the show believe factors like authenticity and relatability; strategic social game; entertainment value and presence; competence ( whether physical, intellectual or creative); character growth and unending appeal; and also the underdog empathy go a long way in paving the way to the prize.

Mahama reaffirms Africa’s readiness for business at TICAD 9

0

President John Mahama

President John Dramani Mahama has reaffirmed Africa’s readiness for business by highlighting the importance of a rules-based trading system and pledging support for the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).

In his closing remarks at the end of the Ninth Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD 9) in Yokohama, Japan, President Mahama urged his fellow African leaders to embrace critical reforms and ensure stability to make the continent a credible and attractive destination for global investment.

“Africa is open for business. We wish to partner with any nation on a win-win basis. But let’s not kid ourselves, trade and investments will not come to Africa because we wish for it,” he said.

The three-day conference concluded with the adoption of the Yokohama Declaration, which outlined enhanced Japan-Africa cooperation in economy, society, and peace and stability.

It sought to address the Continent’s pressing challenges such as poverty and the weakening of multilateralism.

The Yokohama Declaration also pledged deeper cooperation on health, youth entrepreneurship, and governance, stating that democracy and the rule of law were the bedrock for sustainable development.

With the curtains drawn on TICAD 9, the focus now shifts to the implementation of these commitments.

The next conference is scheduled to be held in Africa in 2028, where the continent would showcase the progress made in creating the stable, reformed environment that attracts win-win partnerships.

Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba in his closing remarks, unveiled significant new programmes, including an initiative to create an Indian Ocean-Africa economic zone to facilitate Japanese business expansion.

The Prime Minister further announced an ambitious programme to train 300,000 African professionals in artificial intelligence over the next three years.

He also revealed that Japanese companies were set to invest $100 million in Ghana.

Asante Kotoko snap up former Accra Lions defender Musah Hamzata on three-year deal – Ghana Latest Football News, Live Scores, Results

0

Ghanaian giants Asante Kotoko have strengthened their defensive department with the capture of former Accra Lions centre-back Musah Hamzata on a three-year contract ahead of the 2025/26 Ghana Premier League season.

The 23-year-old versatile defender, who earned plaudits as one of the most consistent performers in the domestic topflight during his time with Accra Lions, was on the radar of several Premier League clubs including Medeama SC, Aduana Stars and Nations FC.

However, the Porcupine Warriors won the race for his signature in what many analysts regard as a significant addition to their backline.

Hamzata is renowned for his aerial strength, calmness on the ball, and leadership qualities in organizing the defense.

His style of play fits into Kotoko’s rebuilding process under a new technical direction following last season’s struggles, where defensive lapses proved costly in their pursuit of silverware.

The lanky centre-back has already linked up with his new teammates in camp as Kotoko prepare for the GHALCA Top Four tournament, although the Reds have endured a shaky start with consecutive defeats to Bibiani GoldStars and Heart of Lions.

With Kotoko determined to mount a serious challenge for both domestic and continental glory this season, the arrival of Hamzata is expected to inject solidity, depth, and renewed confidence into the defense.

PCSRC Order: ‘Why have the regulator at all then’

Professor H Kwasi Prempeh slams Sam George over PCSRC enforcement exercise suspension Professor H Kwasi Prempeh slams Sam George over PCSRC enforcement exercise suspension

The Chairman of the Constitutional Review Committee (CRC), Professor H Kwasi Prempeh, has called out the Minister of Communications, Digital Technology and Innovation, Samuel Nartey George, over his order for the immediate suspension of the enforcement exercise being carried out by the Postal and Courier Services Regulatory Commission (PCSRC) and the Ghana Police against unlicensed delivery riders.

In a Facebook post shared on August 23, 2025, Professor Prempeh asserted that the minister’s directive essentially amounts to stopping a regulator from doing its job.

He questioned whether the minister had the power to give such an order, adding that politicians are the main problem in ensuring that the rule of law governs the country.

Why Sam George has halted the crackdown on unlicensed delivery riders

“What is the point of setting up a regulatory body with the authority to regulate and enforce a regime of measures and related sanctions in a designated industry if the minister or some other politician can simply issue directives to countermand an enforcement action by the regulator? Does the applicable law give him the power summarily to countermand the regulator’s enforcement action this way?

“Why have the regulator at all then? Ordinarily, the minister would be limited to issuing policy directives in writing, not intervening in the regulator’s work on a case-by-case basis.

“This is the appropriate division of labour or ‘separation of powers’ between politician and regulator. Once a Minister intervenes improperly this way, the regulator is effectively rendered useless. Politics remains the number one obstacle to building a Rule of Law culture in this town. We are the ultimate victims and losers!” Prof Prempeh wrote.

Sam George’s directive, announced in a post on X on Thursday, August 21, 2025, followed widespread public concern after a viral video captured chaotic scenes near the National Theatre in Accra, where angry delivery riders clashed with PCSRC officials over the seizure of their motorcycles.

All DStv transmissions could go off-air by September 6 – Sam George warns

According to the minister, while the exercise is consistent with Ghana’s existing laws regulating the use of motorbikes for courier services, its enforcement must be accompanied by wider stakeholder consultation and proper public sensitisation.

“I have directed this afternoon an immediate halt to the ongoing enforcement action by the Postal and Courier Services Regulatory Commission.

“The action, in conjunction with the Ghana Police, is necessary to bring sanity and order to the use of motorbikes for delivery purposes as stipulated by law. However, I believe the Commission needs to do more stakeholder engagements and public education before resuming enforcement. We must enforce the law with a humane face to it.”

24-hour port system is an exceptional initiative

Samson Awingobit is the Executive Secretary of the Importers and Exporters Association of Ghana Samson Awingobit is the Executive Secretary of the Importers and Exporters Association of Ghana

The Importers and Exporters Association of Ghana (IEAG) has praised President John Dramani Mahama’s government for introducing a 24-hour economy at the ports.

Samson Asaki Awingobit, the Association’s Executive Secretary, said the move proves that the President’s election promise to implement a 24-hour economy was not a “hoax.”

He argued that the system offers more flexibility and convenience, giving industry players ample time to conduct business at the ports.

His comments follow the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) Commissioner-General Anthony Kwasi Sarpong’s announcement that Tema Port is now officially operating 24 hours a day, allowing importers to clear their goods even at 2 a.m.

Importers can pay duties online weeks before goods arrive – GRA

“Since the 24-hour system launched at the ports, our agents have embraced it because it is more flexible,” Samson Awingobit affirmed. “You can handle the documentation in the morning, then go home to sleep, and return in the evening, from 10:00 p.m., to clear your goods. In fact, that’s even the best way, as it will drastically reduce the daytime traffic.”

He added that, “I can tell you with authority that agents even prefer working in the evening. You can finish all your documentation in the morning, pay all the fees and charges, and then return in the evening to clear your containers.”

Awingobit stated that the policy will not be a “nine-day wonder” because the positive results are already clear.

“We have really seen the policy’s positive results and have accepted it,” he said.

“You can even clear cars in the evening. It has come to stay and goes beyond Ghana’s boundaries.”

Madina MP Urges Shatta Wale to Take EOCO and FBI Investigations Seriously

0

The Member of Parliament representing Madina, Francis Xavier Sosu, has called upon Dancehall artist Shatta Wale and his legal representatives to approach the ongoing investigations conducted by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) with the highest level of seriousness.

His remarks come in the wake of several days of legal proceedings related to allegations regarding the acquisition of a Lamborghini Urus—specifically, the alleged inability to demonstrate legitimate ownership of the vehicle. An official statement released by EOCO on Thursday, August 21, 2025, indicated that Shatta Wale was unable to provide credible evidence of ownership or lawful acquisition of the vehicle.

During an appearance on Citi FM’s Eyewitness News on Thursday, August 21, Mr. Sosu expressed that although he personally holds admiration for the artist, legal issues of this nature should not be taken lightly. He elaborated that since the allegations reportedly involve the FBI and Ghana’s bilateral agreements concerning crime, it would be unwise to dismiss them. He emphasized that undermining legal processes not only jeopardizes the accused but also conveys a misleading message to young fans who look up to them.

“Citizens must also regard these matters with seriousness. Since this issue arose, I have observed several comments on social media from the accused individual. Very, very respectfully, I am a fan of Shatta, but it is crucial that when such matters arise, they are treated with the seriousness they deserve. These are legal issues. If you take them lightly, it could easily result in imprisonment. I would advise Shatta Wale and his legal team to regard these as serious matters.

“The allegations are originating from the FBI, and we have a bilateral agreement in place, so when a complaint is made, it is expected that the state will conduct an investigation. I urge that we adhere to the boundaries of the law to maintain peace,” he stated. In the meantime, Cephas Boyuo, the attorney representing Shatta Wale, confirmed to Citi News that his client has been released from EOCO custody after fulfilling the revised bail conditions.

As stated by the attorney, the bail sum, which was originally set at GH¢10 million with two sureties, has been lowered to GH¢5 million while maintaining the same number of sureties. Additionally, Shatta Wale is obligated to report to EOCO three times weekly as part of his bail conditions.

‘Na only people you gave work love you,’ Speed Darlington tells Tinubu

0

Singer Speed Darlington has told President Bola Tinubu that public admiration cannot be bought, warning that only those who received appointments or jobs from the government truly support him.

In a video posted on Saturday, August 23, the singer said, “Everything isn’t about the economy! There is more to leadership than the economy. See as everybody dey call your name, dey complain. Nobody loves you. Na only the ones you gave work, na them love you. Even your own tribe dey complain about you.”

Darlington, an Igbo man, urged Tinubu to focus on police reform and respect for human rights. “The Nigerian police is an oppressive agency rooted in human rights violation. As a matter of fact, if they do not violate you, it’s as if they are not even doing their job.

“The idea of arrest before investigation is a pure human rights violation. You arrest and hold a person before you dey investigate. Please, before you leave office, please speak to your Yoruba brother IGP man,” he added.

NPP Northern Regional Secretary condemns Bryan Acheampong’s tribal comment

0

Assistant Northern Regional Secretary of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Aniwaba KB Jeremiah,

In a press release, Mr. Aniwaba expressed disappointment, stressing that it is “most unfortunate” for a party stalwart and presidential hopeful to make what he termed as “unguided and inappropriate comments.”

He noted that such utterances undermine the values of unity, tolerance, and maturity that the NPP upholds.

He therefore called on the National Executive Committee (NEC) and the National Council (NC) of the party to urgently intervene and caution Mr. Acheampong.

The secretary urged the Abetifi legislator to render an unqualified apology to Ghanaians and to the NPP, warning that the remarks risk eroding the confidence of grassroots supporters and weakening the party’s cohesion.

“The NPP has always drawn strength from inclusivity, embracing citizens from all backgrounds, regions, and ethnic groups. Any action or statement that seeks to divide us along such lines is counterproductive and detrimental to the fortunes of the party,” he stated.

He also encouraged all party aspirants to emulate the example of Former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, commending his humility, inclusive posture, and commitment to peaceful political engagement.

He described Dr. Bawumia’s leadership style as worthy of recognition and a model for every member of the party.

He concluded by emphasising that at this critical juncture in the NPP’s political journey, leaders must prioritise the collective interest of the party and the nation above personal or sectional ambitions.

“Only through discipline, respect, and unity can the NPP sustain the trust of the Ghanaian people,” he affirmed.

‘Fans who protested at EOCO office can make Shatta Wale’s case worse’

Ashis is a Ghanaian entertainment pundit Ashis is a Ghanaian entertainment pundit

Following the development where hundreds of Shatta Wale’s loyal fans stormed the EOCO headquarters in protest of his release, entertainment pundit and artiste manager Nana Poku Ashis has shared his thoughts on the potential impact the protest could have on the artiste’s ongoing investigations.

In a discussion on GhanaWeb’s X Space on Friday, August 22, 2025, Ashis noted that although the protest was peaceful, it could have serious implications for the ongoing investigation.

He explained that the protests can make the EOCO boss, Raymond Archer, feel the artiste is a threat in the ongoing investigation, adding that the law doesn’t deal with fan base but rather evidence.

EOCO-Lambo Saga: ‘Don’t blame Shatta Wale, this can happen to anybody’ – Nana Poku Ashis

“People are saying that because the crowd was huge, that is why they released him. No! It’s not the crowd; it is because they have done their job, and someone has secured a bail for him, and the sureties have come for him, and everything was checked. It has nothing to do with the SM boys who were outside. That can even make his case worse.

“That can make the prosecutor feel he is a threat… It was a show of love from his people, but that is not the law. The law doesn’t give respect for a show of love, it deals with issues,” he said

Ashis further noted that Shatta Wale’s release isn’t a result of fans who stormed the EOCO headquarters to show love for their artiste that day.

“Shatta Wale could be very innocent about the whole thing, but it is left with him and his lawyers to prove. It’s not up to the fans… None of us can prove anything because when it comes to matters of the law, it has nothing to do with how popular or huge you are,” he added.

Background

Shatta Wale was detained on Wednesday, August 20, 2025, after voluntarily appearing at the EOCO headquarters in Accra with his lawyer, Cephas Biyuo.

The inquiry centres on allegations of irregularities surrounding the luxury vehicle, which was earlier seized by authorities on suspicion of being connected to a wider financial scandal in the United States.

‘Shatta Wale will secure a percentage of votes if he stands for president’ – Ashis

Also, a probe of possible breaches of Ghana’s tax regulations relating to the car is being conducted.

Shatta Wale was released on Thursday, August 21, 2025, after meeting bail conditions of GH¢5 million with two sureties.

10 fastest-growing trading nations in Africa

0

Against the backdrop of shifting dynamics in global trade, several African nations have positioned themselves among the world’s fastest-growing trading economies, according to the DHL Trade Atlas 2025.

The report highlights the rising prominence of these countries as key hubs for international trade and investment.

While major economies such as China and the United States continue to dominate overall trade volumes, contributing 18 percent and 14 percent respectively to global trade growth over the past five years.

Countries including the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Zimbabwe, Liberia and Côte d’Ivoire recorded double-digit trade growth between 2019 and 2024, driven by rising global demand for minerals, agricultural commodities, and shipping services.

The DHL Trade Atlas 2025 identifies African economies as among the fastest risers, driven more by trade growth rates than by economic size.

These countries are leveraging vast natural resources, improved logistics, and regional integration to expand their global footprint.

Revising minimum capital rule may hurt local businesses – Economist

Looking ahead, Sub-Saharan Africa’s trade is projected to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 5.3 percent between 2024 and 2029 — a sharp acceleration compared to the 0.8 percent CAGR recorded between 2019 and 2024.

This momentum positions the continent as one of the most dynamic forces in the ongoing reshaping of global supply chains.

Africa’s Trade Opportunities and Vulnerabilities

As the continent positions itself at the heart of the green energy transition, Africa is emerging as a key supplier of critical minerals such as cobalt, copper, bauxite, and manganese, essential for electric vehicles, renewable technologies, and electronics.

At the same time, it is consolidating its role in global food systems, exporting cocoa, cashew, grains, and fisheries that are increasingly vital to food security in Europe, Asia, and the Middle East.

Despite the growth, risks remain.

Many of Africa’s fastest-growing trading nations remain heavily reliant on raw material exports, leaving them exposed to commodity price volatility.

According to the International Growth Centre, transport costs in Africa are up to five times higher per unit distance than in the United States, while Freight News estimates that logistics costs remain 40–60 percent above the global average.

Climate shocks present further risks. A recent multilateral report indicates that more than 90 million people in eastern and southern Africa face hunger due to prolonged droughts, with Zimbabwe alone recording a 70 percent decline in its corn harvest.

Global Context: Scale vs Speed

While China and the United States remain the world’s largest trading economies, their growth has slowed, ranking only 72nd and 77th in trade growth speed between 2019 and 2024. Yet their scale still accounted for nearly one-third of global trade growth.

India, the world’s 13th largest trading economy, grew at a CAGR of 5.2 percent in the same period, making it the third-largest contributor to global trade growth.

Africa mirrors this shift. Though starting from smaller bases, several African economies are now among the fastest-growing globally, reshaping trade patterns despite lower absolute volumes.

Digital trade adds momentum. UNCTAD reports international e-commerce grew from $1.9 trillion in 2016 to $2.9 trillion in 2022, a trend expected to accelerate.

This creates new opportunities for African firms to access global markets without heavy infrastructure costs.

From supplying critical minerals for clean energy to exporting food and industrial inputs, Africa’s growing role is evident—powering electric vehicles in Europe, feeding households in the Middle East, and supplying factories in Asia.

The event drew dignitaries from across Ghana, including former President John Agyekum Kufuor, who paid homage to the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.

In videos trending online, the former president was supported as he walked toward the Asantehene and exchanged pleasantries with him in a moment that underscored the deep bond between Ghana’s statesmen and the Ashanti Kingdom.

Clad in rich black cloth, a symbol of mourning in the Ashanti tradition, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II led chiefs, elders, and thousands of mourners in observing the sacred rite. The atmosphere was one of reverence as the people of Asanteman demonstrated unity in grief and respect for the late queen mother, who passed away on August 15, 2025, at the age of 98.

The ceremony was marked by a blend of solemnity and cultural grandeur, as the Asantehene sat in state to receive greetings and condolences from traditional rulers, political leaders, and other well-wishers. Drumming, dancing, and traditional dirges accompanied the gathering, while courtiers upheld centuries-old Ashanti customs of mourning.

EOCO flags Honda CR-Vs, Range Rovers, others as most likely stolen vehicles – Citinewsroom – Comprehensive News in Ghana

0

The Economic and Organised Office (EOCO) has identified Honda CR-Vs, Ford F-150s, Range Rovers, and Dodge vehicles as the most frequently intercepted brands in its operations targeting stolen cars trafficked into Ghana.

The agency’s findings follow ongoing collaborations with international law enforcement agencies, including Interpol, which has previously classified Ghana as a growing destination for stolen vehicles, particularly from North America.

“There are certain types of vehicles that are suspicious. The Honda CR-V series, Ford F-150, Range Rover, and Dodge Ram are consistently the top four in our recoveries. If you’re purchasing one of these, it should immediately raise concerns, Leo Anthony Siamah, Head of EOCO’s Legal Unit, said in an interview on JoyNews on Saturday, August 23, advising prospective car buyers to be especially cautious when dealing with these high-risk brands.

He further noted a growing pattern involving newer models entering the local market in unusually pristine condition. According to him, the appearance of accident-free 2023 and 2024 models, which fall outside the norm for Ghana’s vehicle import trends, should prompt a deeper investigation.

“If you’re looking at a 2023 or 2024 model that looks brand new and hasn’t been in an accident, you need to pause. That should trigger verification steps such as checking the car’s status with Interpol,” he advised.

While the spotlight is currently on these four brands, Mr. Siamah clarified that EOCO’s enforcement activities are not restricted to them. The office has also pursued cases involving other vehicles, including Toyota Highlanders, Honda Accords, and Toyota Corollas.

NPP Lost 2024 Elections Largely Due to Bad Economy, Cedi Depreciation, Haircuts & National Cathedral; NOT Because of Bryan’s Genuine Intentions to Partner with SSNIT in its Hotels’ Management

*NPP, Lost 2024 Elections, Largely ,Due ,

It is very funny how some members of Dr. Bawumia’s camp are alleging that the decision by SSNIT to sell off 60% of its stake in four hotels to private investors under a public-private partnership with a strategic investor like Rock City Hotel automatically caused the 2024 defeat of the NPP.

However, the two reports which are very dear to the heart of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, that is, the Mike Oquaye Report and the Osei Kyei-Mensah Bonsu Report never fingered SSNIT-Rock City deal as the possible cause of NPP’s defeat in 2024.

Kennedy Agyapong, Bryan Acheampong, Yaw Osei Adutwum, and all members of NPP EXCEPT Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and his people have been accused of as the cause of NPP 2024 defeat.

However, according to Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia in April 2025, NPP lost the elections in 2024 because of:
1. E-levy
2. Domestic Debt Exchange Programme (DDEP)
3. High Cost of living
4. Prices of goods and services went up and left many Ghanaians struggling
5. Arrogance of power (we were not willing to listen)
6. Government’s inability to pay NABCO and others
7. School feeding caterers and others were also not being paid
8. Controversy surrounding the $ 58 million National Cathedral project
9. Last-minute fuel price hike

Other major factors that caused the defeat of NPP in 2024 not mentioned by Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia were:
1. Cedi Depreciation, moving $1 to 4ghc to $1 to 17ghc.
2. High Inflation
3. High Interest rates
4. Galamsey
5. Disrespect towards certain Chiefs
6. Break-down of the relationship between NPP and the media
7. Sidelining of Party members leading to Apathy
8. Suffering of the Private sector, and collapse of several private enterprises
9. Failed 1 Village 1 Dam policy, 1 million dollars, one constituency policy, among others
10. Lack of proper infrastructural development and Interchanges in the Ashanti Region as promised.
11. Demographics challenges faced by the 2024 Presidential candidate.

The question now is; When did Public-Private Partnerships become an illegality under the laws of Ghana?
In its own wisdom, Ghana’s Parliament even enacted the Public-Private Partnership Act, 2020 (Act 1039) to regulate the entire PPP process, from project identification to implementation, as well as provisions for procurement, contracting and dispute resolution.

According to the Management of SSNIT before settling on Rock City Hotel, SSNIT:
1. Went through International Competitive Tendering (ICT) processes as prescribed by the Public Procurement Act, 2003 (Act 663), as amended by Act 914 for the selection of a strategic investor.

2. Commenced the process with the engagement of a Transaction Advisor through ICT method of procurement, with publication of advertisements in the Daily Graphic on 14th November, 2018, and in the Ghanaian Times on 15th November, 2018. The said advertisement was equally published in The Economist, a renowned and reputable international magazine in its 5-11, 2019 edition.

The legitimate questions any reasonable person would ask regarding SSNIT’s decision to sell 60% of its stake in four hotels are;
1. Was Rock City Hotel the only company that applied for the contract? Absolutely NO.

A total of nine (9) companies responded to the advertisements by SSNIT and accordingly submitted proposals by the 23rd of March, 2022 deadline. Six (6) out of the nine (9) companies were shortlisted and issued with Request for Proposal (RFP) documents. The qualifying companies were invited for the opening of their financial proposals.
Based on the technical and financial evaluation by an independent committee, Rock City Hotel emerged the best.

2. Was the contract finally awarded to Rock City Hotel to take over 60% of SSNIT’s Stake in the four(4) hotels (Labadi Beach Hotel, La Palm Royal Beach Resort, Ridge Royal Hotel, and Elmina Beach Resort) even after emerging with the best and strongest technical and financial proposals amongst those received by SSNIT? Absolutely NO.

The process of SSNIT getting a strategic partnership was not yet concluded before a petition was submitted to CHRAJ requesting for a full-scale investigation into the sale of SSNIT hotels. As a law-abiding corporate entity, Rock City Hotel expressed disinterest in the contract given the impending investigation by CHRAJ, and the politically sponsored attacks on its owner, Dr. Bryan Acheampong.

3. Is Bryan Acheampong the first businessman who has had his company express an interest in a strategic partnership with Hotels publicly owned by State entity? Absolutely NO.
(a). In 2006, the government in partnership with Saudi Prince, Alwaleed Bin Talal Bin Abdul Aziz Alsaud, a world acclaimed entrepreneur invested about $100 million into the renovations and construction works of the State-owned Ambassador Hotel, which was built as a gift to Ghana about 50 years ago (then in 2006) and now 68years ago in 2025 by the United Kingdom. The Ambassador Hotel has been taken over and managed by Movenpick Hotel, a hotel management chain.

Ghanaians saw nothing wrong with this arrangement probably because the Saudi Prince wasn’t a Black businessman or a Ghanaian Politician. The Saudi Prince expressed an interest in the Ambassador Hotel around 2003.

(b). In 2008, Ghana Libyan-Arab Holding Company Limited (GLAHCO) took over the ownership of state-owned Kumasi City Hotel and Accra City Hotel and further entered into a contractual agreement with the Golden Tulip Hospitality Group of the Netherlands to manage these two hotels under the brand name Golden Tulip Kumasi City Hotel and Golden Tulip Accra.

The financiers of the projects were Government of Ghana, Libyan Government Investment Company in Africa, and Ghana Commercial Bank.

Let’s also mention that, in 1979, Ace Hotels and Resorts Limited acquired the Kumasi City Hotel through the formation of a joint venture company to rehabilitate the hotel.

In 2022, the management of Golden Tulip Hotels, the Ghana Libyan-Arab Holding Company (GLAHCO) stated that, they have leased the Golden Tulip Accra and Golden Tulip Kumasi City Hotel to Achour Holdings, operators of Grand Lancaster chain of hotels for 12years.

Achour Holdings is a private Lebanese company located in Beirut. Imagine the level of political spinning if these two hotels were leased to Rock City Hotel for 12years?

Ghana Libyan-Arab Holding Company Limited(GLAHCO) is a joint-venture between the Libyan Arab African Investment Company(LAAICO) and the Government of Ghana with participating interest of 40% and 60% equities respectively.

(c). Rawlings’ government ushered in the Ghana Libyan-Arab Holding Company (GLAHCO) during the period of Divestiture Implementation Committee (DIC). The Divestiture Implementation Committee(DIC) is widely considered by many as a body set up by the PNDC junta to oversee the process of their large scale corruption of sale of state lands, buildings, and properties to themselves and their cronies. Over 60 state-owned companies were placed on Divestiture and sold to cronies of NDC between 1989 and 1992.

GLAHCO and several private business persons benefitted from this divestiture exercise.

Certainly, the genuine intentions of Rock City Hotel owned by Dr. Bryan Acheampong to go through all the procurement processes to partner with SSNIT as a strategic investor to raise capital to invest in the SSNIT hotels as well as their management under Public-Private partnership can NEVER be considered as one of the major reasons why the NPP lost the 2024 elections.

Nurses demand urgent security reforms after Ridge Hospital assault – Citinewsroom – Comprehensive News in Ghana

0

The Chairman of the Greater Accra Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA), Jefferson Asare, has called for stronger internal security measures at healthcare facilities following the recent assault on a nurse at the Greater Accra Regional Hospital (Ridge Hospital).

Speaking on Channel One TV’s The Big Issue on Saturday, August 23, Asare clarified that the association is not calling for the permanent deployment of police officers to hospitals, but stressed that systems must exist to ensure rapid law enforcement response when threats emerge.

“We don’t advocate that police should be stationed with us at the hospital. But at least, there should be some level of protection. At the blink of an eye, police should be able to respond. That is what we are calling for,” he said.

He described the current internal security arrangements at Ridge and other hospitals as inadequate, leaving staff exposed during emergencies or confrontations with aggressive patients or relatives.

“Internal security measures must be heightened. Security should know who to allow into the emergency sector and how to manage access. You can’t leave nurses to handle crowd control. Police should act as a buffer, not be stationed in the hospital, but be on standby for immediate intervention,” Asare added.

The comments follow a violent incident on August 17 at Ridge Hospital’s emergency department, where nurse Rejoice Tsotso Bortei was allegedly assaulted by a patient’s relative. The attack, captured on video, has since gone viral and sparked nationwide outrage.

Tensions escalated further after footage showed Health Minister Mintah Akandoh exchanging pleasantries with the alleged suspect during a visit to the hospital—a moment widely criticised for seemingly downplaying the severity of the assault. The video emerged shortly after the minister met with hospital management to address the incident.

Meanwhile, Bortei has filed a GHS 7 million civil lawsuit against Ralph St. Williams, the individual accused of the assault, citing physical assault and defamation.
