Human rights advocate petitions President Mahama to dissolve RTI Commission Board

A Ghanaian human rights consultant and paralegal based in the United States, Theophilus Ken Dorman, has petitioned President John Dramani Mahama to dissolve the governing board of the Right to Information Commission (RTIC), citing alleged non-performance, abuse of discretion and violations of constitutional rights.

In a petition addressed to the Office of the President at Jubilee House, Dorman accused the RTIC of persistently failing to carry out its statutory mandate under the Right to Information Act, 2019 (Act 989).

The petition was received at the Presidency on January 6, 2026, according to official markings on the document.

Dorman, a Human Rights Consultant and Paralegal who lists his address at Assin Kushea in the Central Region, argued that the Commission’s conduct has rendered the RTI law ineffective and eroded public confidence in the institution.

“The persistent refusal and failure of the Commission to execute its statutory mandate have resulted in grave constitutional, administrative, and human rights violations,” the petition stated.

According to the petitioner, the RTIC has consistently failed to enforce its own lawful orders as required under Sections 44, 45, 46, and 82 of Act 989. He further alleged that the Commission has not applied sanctions against public institutions that refuse to release information, nor ensured timely administrative justice.

“This persistent non-performance has rendered Act 989 ineffective, making legislative efforts, public resources, and citizens’ agitations meaningless,” Mr. Dorman said.

The petition also accused the RTIC of abusing its discretionary powers in violation of Articles 23 and 296 of the 1992 Constitution, which require administrative bodies to act fairly, reasonably, and without arbitrariness.

“The RTIC’s refusal to enforce compliance, even when empowered by law, constitutes an abuse of administrative discretion, rendering their governance untenable,” the document noted.

Dorman further claimed that the Commission’s inaction has led to the denial of citizens’ constitutional right to information as guaranteed under Article 21(1)(f) of the Constitution.

“The Commission’s failures have encouraged a culture of impunity among public institutions and undermined democratic governance,” he asserted.

The human rights advocate said the RTIC has lost public trust due to delays, weak leadership, and failure to enforce compliance, adding that such inaction indirectly enables secrecy, corruption, and abuse of power in public institutions.

He cited several cases which he claims the Commission has failed to effectively enforce, including matters involving the Ghana Police Service, the National Signals Bureau, and the Central Regional House of Chiefs.

In his prayer to the President, Dorman called for the immediate dissolution of the RTIC governing board and the appointment of a new board made up of individuals “of integrity, boldness, and proven commitment to transparency and accountability.”

He also requested an independent administrative review into the Commission’s operations, particularly its handling of public complaints and enforcement of decisions.

“When the institution created to protect the right to information refuses to act, it becomes a threat to constitutional governance,” Dorman stated, urging the President to take “decisive leadership” to restore public confidence.

As of the time of filing this report, the Office of the President and the Right to Information Commission have not publicly responded to the petition.

Week 18 Match Report – Hohoe United 0-1 Hearts of Oak

The result maintains Hearts’ momentum at the top end of the table The result maintains Hearts’ momentum at the top end of the table

Mawuli Wayo struck deep into added time to secure a dramatic victory for Hearts of Oak over Hohoe United on Saturday afternoon at the Hohoe Sports Stadium, keeping the Phobians firmly in the title race.

Wayo’s stoppage-time effort sealed all three points at a difficult venue, bringing to an end a tense contest that appeared destined to finish level.

The result maintains Hearts’ momentum at the top end of the table as the season enters a decisive phase.

The visitors showed patience and resilience throughout, absorbing pressure and steadily asserting control before finally finding the breakthrough in added time. Their persistence was rewarded with a valuable away win that could prove significant in the weeks ahead.

Hearts controlled long spells of the match, enjoying more possession and creating the clearer chances across both halves.

Hamza Issah came close early on but was denied by a well-timed intervention from defender Kwame Paul, while Martin Karikari also tested the Hohoe United defence. At the other end, the hosts’ best opening fell to captain Usman Safianu, who failed to convert from close range.

Black Stars goalkeeper Benjamin Asare returned to the starting line-up and delivered a composed display, keeping another clean sheet after several weeks out. The contest remained finely balanced thanks to impressive goalkeeping, with Hohoe United’s Kwaku Musah producing a fine save to deny Enoch Asubonteng late on.

Wayo’s winner reflected Hearts’ superiority on the day, lifting them to 31 points after 18 matches. They now sit three points behind leaders Medeama SC, who host Young Apostles on Sunday. Hohoe United remain in the bottom three with 18 points from 18 games.

TMA decongests shops at El Paso lorry station

0

The Tema Metropolitan Assembly (TMA) has decongested shops operating within the Community One El Paso Lorry station as part of a broader initiative to modernise the transport hub and improve the city’s outlook.

The exercise resulted in the removal of several wooden and metal structures that had been erected along walkways and vehicle access routes at the busy lorry station.

Mr Alfred Ocansey, aide to Ms Ebi Bright, Tema Metropolitan Chief Executive (MCE), told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) that the decongestion formed part of a planned facelift of the metropolis and the construction of a multi-purpose lorry station to enhance safety, order, and commuter comfort, adding that the traders affected by the exercise had been adequately informed ahead of time.

Mr Ocansey stated that a well-structured and decongested system would be implemented to ensure that a greater number of people could conduct business in an orderly and efficient manner.

“The traders were notified of the intended redevelopment last year. A stakeholders’ engagement was held with them on January 06, 2025, and further reminders were issued on the eve of January 07,” he stated.

Despite these assurances, several traders expressed dissatisfaction with the exercise, arguing that the process failed to address their economic survival.

They added that the notice was very short as no alternative place was provided for them to continue their businesses, adding that the sudden loss of their trading space would have serious financial consequences.

The traders appealed to the TMA to consider their plight and provide designated areas where they could continue operating while redevelopment works would be ongoing.

Some residents, however, commended the MCE for the initiative, describing it as a necessary step toward restoring order in Tema.

They recalled that the city was once regarded as one of the most beautiful and well-organised; however, years of unchecked development and the proliferation of unauthorised structures had undermined its planning.

Sources say Ofori-Atta living normally, not outwardly very sick

Manasseh Ofori Atta Manasseh Azure (R) said that his sources claim Ofori-Atta (L) was living normally

Investigative journalist Manasseh Azure Awuni has revealed that Ghana’s former Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta, appears to be living a normal life in Washington, DC.

According to him, his sources indicate that Ofori-Atta does not outwardly show signs of being gravely ill, contrary to claims that his health condition prevents him from facing legal proceedings.

AG drops details of confidential conversation he had with ‘top’ US lawyers of Ofori-Atta

Speaking on TV3 on January 10, 2026, Manasseh cautioned that health matters are sensitive but insisted that observations from people who see Ofori-Atta regularly suggest he is not severely incapacitated.

“When it comes to health, you cannot say much, but according to these sources, they see him [Ofori-Atta] living normally. That is what the sources say. Sometimes you see him out, and sometimes he gets visitors. So it’s like that’s the outward appearance. That’s what these sources say,” he stated.

Manasseh, however, acknowledged that appearances alone cannot conclusively determine a person’s medical condition.

“But of course, this is a health issue; you cannot just see someone and assume everyone is right,” he noted.

He noted that if claims by Ofori-Atta’s lawyers about his recuperation are accurate, then reports of his public activity would align with that position.

“But if they say he’s recuperating, I suspect he’s getting better, as the lawyers may have said, because from people who see him, that’s from the outside, it doesn’t look like someone who is very sick,” he said.

The investigative journalist further indicated that the information from Washington, DC, corroborates earlier reports that placed the former finance minister in the US capital late last year.

Manasseh also referenced Ofori-Atta’s travel history, which confirms his presence in the United States.

“And I think this information we are getting from Washington DC is consistent with somewhere last year, December or so, there were some reports that he was some reports that he was cited in Washington DC,” he stated.

He added, “And if you look at his travel records, he left this country on January 4, 2025, departed from Terminal 3, and then the airline he boarded was the United Airlines flight 997. That airline was headed for Washington DC, so it looks like his location and life within the DC area have also been confirmed.”

Macclesfield beat Crystal Palace in biggest FA Cup shock of all time

0

Non-league Macclesfield produced the greatest shock in FA Cup history with a stunning and memorable performance to knock out holders Crystal Palace.

The hosts are ranked 117 places below Premier League side Palace, meaning this was the biggest upset in the competition of all time in terms of league places, but on the pitch, that gap was non-existent as this was a deserved win for Macclesfield.

Paul Dawson’s brilliant header in the first half had the home fans in dreamland, before Isaac Buckley-Ricketts shocked Palace further when he prodded in a second after the break.

Yeremy Pino set up a nervous finish for the hosts when he fired home a free-kick in stoppage time, but Macclesfield held on to secure the famous win.

Palace, who had caused their own shock by beating Manchester City to win the FA Cup last May, had dominated possession from the outset but struggled to create many meaningful chances as their poor form continued.

They are now without a win in nine games, but this is by far their most disappointing result in that run.

They had fielded a mixture of young players and experienced first-teamers for this game, and the youngest player on the pitch perhaps should have given them the lead in the first half.

Joel Drakes-Thomas, 16, was picked out by a brilliant cross from Kaden Rodney but just failed to connect with his head after peeling away from the defence.

Christantus Uche sent a thumping strike just over the bar, but then came the moment that Macclesfield fans will cherish forever.

Luke Duffy sent a great ball into the box, and Macclesfield captain Dawson rose highest to send a great header into the far corner.

Oliver Glasner sent on experienced Premier League players Tyrick Mitchell, Johnson, and Will Hughes for the start of the second half, but Palace appeared rattled and continued to struggle against their National League North opponents.

Instead, Macclesfield continued to play with a determination and belief that they could upset Palace, and so it proved as Buckley-Ricketts reacted superbly to a deflected shot that fell into his path to flick home a second.

Pino’s fine free-kick, curled expertly over the wall and just under the bar, gave Palace some hope of rescuing the situation, but the home side stood strong to win.

Macclesfield deliver after overcoming difficult times

The final whistle prompted scenes of jubilation as fans raced onto the pitch to celebrate, with captain Dawson lofted into the air.

There have only been nine non-league wins against top-flight opponents in the past 100 years of the FA Cup.

This one was particularly significant given what Macclesfield supporters have gone through in recent times.

One hundred and forty-six years of history were consigned to the history books when Macclesfield Town ceased trading in 2020.

Local businessman Robert Smethurst bought the club’s assets and, with former player Robbie Savage joining the board, they were reformed as a phoenix club.

After joining the ninth-tier North West Counties Premier Division, three promotions in four seasons have lifted them to the sixth tier, where they are just a handful of points outside the play-off places despite being in the bottom half of the table.

With Savage having left to join Forest Green Rovers, they are now managed by John Rooney, younger brother of former England captain Wayne, and he has fashioned a side that plays with confidence and purpose, no matter who they face.

That was evident in this game, with the performance from the players all the more impressive because of the tragedy they had to deal with recently.

On 16 December, Silkmen forward Ethan McLeod died in a car accident while travelling back from Macclesfield’s National League North match at Bedford Town.

His team-mates clearly wanted to pay tribute, and did so by delivering this historic result that will be talked about for years to come.

Palace’s poor form continues

After celebrating their memorable FA Cup trophy win at the end of last season, Palace fans would never have envisaged their defence would end at the first stage, particularly at the hands of a team five divisions below them.

Glasner certainly took a risk with his youthful starting XI, but they still possessed enough Premier League experience in the team and on the bench to have overcome this hurdle.

But aside from having plenty of possession, they looked a side completely out of sorts, with the fact that Macclesfield finished the game with more shots than them highlighting that this was a deserved result.

The opener came from a set-piece – a Palace weakness this season, as 13 of the 23 goals scored against them in the Premier League have come from such situations.

Palace appeared to lack leadership on the pitch to deal with the situation, and though they came alive after Pino’s strike, it ultimately came far too late.

It is an embarrassing result for Palace, but Glasner’s wider focus will be on trying to turn around their alarming drop in form, with the Eagles having not won in any competition since 11 December.

President Mahama orders review of KGL-NLA contract agreement

President John Dramani Mahama has ordered an immediate, comprehensive review and potential renegotiation of the controversial contract between the National Lottery Authority (NLA) and KGL Group/KGL Technology Limited.

The directive, issued in a letter from the Secretary to the President, Dr Callistus Mahama, dated December 24, 2025, instructs the Attorney-General and the Minister of Finance to constitute a joint technical team to investigate and review the contract.

This move follows investigative publications by The Fourth Estate and preliminary consultations with key government officials.

“His Excellency John Dramani Mahama, President of the Republic, has directed, with immediate effect, that the said contract be subjected to a comprehensive review and, where necessary, renegotiation to ensure complete protection of the public interest, value for money, and strict compliance with applicable laws, regulations, and government policy,” the statement read.

KGL pays GH¢157 million in 2024 alone to NLA

The contract has been the subject of public scrutiny over its terms and potential implications for state revenue.

The review will specifically examine:

* The legal basis, scope, duration, and financial terms of the agreement.

Revenue-sharing arrangements, fees, commissions, and any exclusivity clauses.

* Compliance with the Constitution, Public Procurement Act, and National Lottery Act.

* Performance obligations, data ownership, transparency, and audit rights.

* Any clauses that may “unduly prejudice the State or constrain regulatory oversight.”

“Pending the outcome of this process, all parties are to cooperate fully with the review team and provide unfettered access to contracts, addenda, correspondence, financial records, and operational data as may be required,” the statement added.

The directive states that if grounds for renegotiation are established, the revised terms must secure improved fiscal returns for the state, strengthen governance, and align with international best practices.

The AG, alongside the Minister for Finance, are to oversee the process and submit recommendations to the President within a specified timeframe.

NPP’s Jirapa struggles predate Bawumia

0

A Deputy Spokesperson for former Vice-President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, Dr Ekua Amoakoh A Deputy Spokesperson for former Vice-President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, Dr Ekua Amoakoh

A Deputy Spokesperson for former Vice-President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, Dr Ekua Amoakoh, has mounted a strong defence of the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) prospects in the Jirapa Constituency, rejecting claims that the party lacks grassroots support in the area and vowing renewed efforts to overturn its long-standing electoral losses there.

Dr Amoakoh’s comments made on Facebook on Wednesday, January 7, 2026, were in response to remarks by Kwasi Kwarteng, a spokesperson for the campaign of Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, who cited the 2024 presidential election results in Jirapa—hometown of Ghana’s independence-era politician Dr Kofi Abrefa Busia’s ally, S.D. Dombo—to argue that Dr Bawumia does not enjoy the backing of Dombo’s ancestral family or the constituency at large.

Addressing the criticism, Dr Amoakoh acknowledged the NPP’s historical struggles in Jirapa, noting that the party has never won the parliamentary seat since the start of the Fourth Republic in 1992.

However, she stressed that this reality predates Dr Bawumia’s leadership ambitions and should not be laid at his doorstep.

“The fact that the NPP has not won Jirapa since 1992 is a blot on the conscience of the party as a whole, not a problem that started with Dr Mahamudu Bawumia. We will put in the necessary work to improve our numbers there and ultimately win the seat,” she stated

Dr Amoakoh insisted that the NPP’s renewed focus on Jirapa would be grounded in hard work, engagement, and respect for local dynamics, rather than internal disparagement.

She criticised attempts by Ken’s camp to frame the contest in divisive terms, since that could alienate voters.

In a pointed rebuttal to suggestions that Dr Bawumia lacks support from the Dombo tradition, the Deputy Spokesperson maintained that endorsements backing the former Vice-President come from members of the Dombo family and respected stalwarts who identify with the Dombo political heritage.

She argued that such support undermines claims that Jirapa has decisively rejected Dr Bawumia or his political lineage.

Implement targeted measures to sustain country’s socio-economic growth, development across key sectors-New Year School

0

The 77th Annual New Year School (ANYS) and Conference ended on Wednesday with the presentation of a communiqué urging the government to implement targeted measures to sustain Ghana’s socio-economic growth and development across key sectors.

Presenting the communiqué, the Director of the 77th ANYS, Professor Simon-Peter Kafui Aheto, outlined several recommendations, including the expedited resourcing of the Digital Youth Village and Centre, the development of a sector-based operational 24-hour economy framework, and the standardisation of capacity-building and training programmes for entrepreneurs.

The communiqué further emphasised the need for government to broaden the country’s tax base through the digitalisation of the informal sector. It also called for the development of digital and youth-focused programmes to address rising youth unemployment.

According to Prof Aheto, the growing interest of young people in digital and technology-driven initiatives clearly indicated the need for government to scale up efforts to create opportunities in that space.

He also stressed the importance of inclusive participation in policy formulation and implementation at the local level to ensure effective governance.

Prof Aheto noted that although Ghana was endowed with enormous talent within its educational institutions, the country had failed to adequately harness this potential.

In this regard, he urged the Ministry of Education to consider launching a National Talent Hunt Programme to identify, develop, and nurture talents across schools, as proposed in the communiqué.

He further underscored the need for comprehensive support for entrepreneurs, including access to funding, technical training, regulatory compliance assistance, and logistical support, as a means of reducing unemployment and stimulating economic growth.

Touching on sports development, Prof Aheto highlighted the importance of revitalising inter-school sports competitions to identify and nurture young athletes capable of representing Ghana at international competitions.

He called for adequate time allocation for Physical Education (PE) in schools to encourage participation in various sporting disciplines.

Additionally, he advocated the establishment of an independent sports ethics committee to combat corruption within the sports sector.

On the health front, Prof Aheto stressed the need for the government to integrate health education into school curricula and to launch community-based health campaigns.

He explained that such initiatives would not only improve public health outcomes but also enhance the overall performance of the health sector.

Other key issues highlighted in the communiqué included the passage of the Public Performance Bill by Parliament to strengthen accountability and the leveraging of technology to accelerate industrialisation.

In a brief remark, the Executive Director of the 77th ANYS and Conference, Dr Jack Andrews Dotsey, urged participants to reflect on the discussions and work collaboratively to drive Ghana’s socio-economic transformation.

The two-day event, held under the theme “Building the Ghana We Want Together for Sustainable Development,” was officially opened on Tuesday by President John Dramani Mahama. It brought together policymakers, academics, industry leaders, and development partners to deliberate on Ghana’s development priorities and pathways toward sustainable growth.

NPP does not need Mahama’s failure to regain power – Kofi Tonto

0

Kofi Tonto, a political aide and deputy spokesperson for Dr Mahamudu Bawumia Kofi Tonto, a political aide and deputy spokesperson for Dr Mahamudu Bawumia

Kofi Tonto, a political aide and deputy spokesperson for Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, the former vice president of Ghana, has responded to recent claims suggesting the New Patriotic Party (NPP) is rooting for President John Mahama’s failure to secure a return to power.

In an exclusive interview on JoyNews, Tonto dismissed the notion, emphasising that the NPP’s political fortunes do not rely on the downfall of the current government.

Tonto highlighted that the NPP is pleased with recent economic improvements, which include a reduction in inflation rates, an appreciating cedi, and lowered fuel prices.

These developments, he noted, benefit all Ghanaians and should be seen as a positive sign for the nation’s economic recovery. “We are happy because, as the NPP, we don’t need President Mahama to fail for us to come back to power,” Tonto stated.

He underscored that the NPP’s primary concern should be the well-being of the country, rather than engaging in political gamesmanship.

“Ghanaians don’t think in a binary way, that one has to fail for the other to succeed,” he continued, stressing that national progress must take precedence over partisan politics.

Tonto’s statement reflects a growing sentiment that political success should be evaluated on the merits of policies and leadership, rather than the failure of opponents.

“We want President Mahama to succeed because his success is ultimately the success of Ghana,” Tonto explained.

“If Ghana prospers, everyone benefits, irrespective of political affiliation.” His comments reflect a commitment to national unity and the collective goal of lifting the country’s fortunes, irrespective of the party in power.

However, Tonto also pointed out that success does not guarantee automatic political survival.

Even if President Mahama were to achieve significant milestones in his administration, Ghanaians retain the constitutional right to choose a leadership direction that aligns with their aspirations.

“We believe that even in the face of Mahama’s success, Ghanaians can still decide that although you’ve done well, we need a leader whose vision transcends the ordinary,” he said.

This position, Tonto emphasised, does not mean that the NPP opposes progress. In fact, they welcome positive developments under Mahama’s leadership as long as they are in the best interests of the country.

For the NPP, the ultimate goal is to present a fresh vision for Ghana’s future, one that builds on existing successes while offering new possibilities for the nation.
