Patrick Acheampong 2025 Bono East Regional Best Farmer has urged the government’s intervention for international market opportunities for agriculture produce.
He said they needed ready markets in Europe, Asia and the United States, worrying that quantities of farm produce went waste every year due to lack of ready markets, discouraging farmers in the region.
Acheampong also called on the government to subsidize agriculture inputs to make the sector more attractive for the youth and also inspire farmers to expand their economic activities and produce more.
In an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) at Techiman, Acheampong expressed the worry that high cost of inputs and unavailability ready market for farm produce served as a disincentive to the about the 3,238 registered farmer groups in the region.
“Prices of farm produce haven’t increased, though transport fares and price of petroleum products and agriculture inputs like fertilizers and labour charges have increased marginally”, he stated.
Acheampong said as a major food basket of the nation, the government’s support to farmers in finding international markets for agricultural produce would drive many of the teeming unemployed youth into the sector.
Nonetheless, he lauded the government ‘Feed Ghana’ initiative, saying many of the farmers in the region had braced themselves for the full operationalization of the programme.
