A series of photographs showing Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu with his phone camera covered by red tape have gone viral online, sparking widespread speculation over the reasons behind the unusual security measure.

The images, taken at different points including an underground parking garage at the Knesset in Jerusalem and inside a meeting hall, show Netanyahu holding his phone to his ear with its rear camera lenses crudely obscured by thick red tape.

Similar images have since emerged showing the same taped-over camera on another of his devices during a separate parliamentary session.

According to Israeli media reports, including Maariv, the taped cameras are not intended to prevent photography in restricted military zones, as is standard protocol in such settings, but rather to physically block the remote activation of phone cameras through malicious spyware.

The precaution reflects heightened concern within Israel’s leadership over digital espionage, particularly given growing fears of so-called “zero-click” surveillance tools capable of covertly activating a phone’s camera and microphone without the user’s knowledge.

The images have triggered significant reaction across Arab and Iranian media in particular, with some outlets framing the taped camera as evidence of what they described as “digital paranoia” within Netanyahu’s inner circle.

The timing has also fueled speculation linking the precaution to a string of reported hacks targeting senior Israeli officials in recent months, including Netanyahu’s own chief of staff and a former prime minister, allegedly carried out by Iranian-linked hacking groups.

Security experts note that physically covering a camera lens remains one of the few foolproof defenses against sophisticated spyware, regardless of how advanced a device’s software protections may be, a reality that has left even one of the world’s most technologically advanced nations relying on a simple strip of tape to guard its own prime minister’s communications.
