Three people, including a police officer, were killed and 10 others injured in a road crash on the Iganga-Mbale Highway in Namutumba District on Tuesday night.
The crash occurred at about 7:30pm in Kalamira Village, Magada Sub-county, when a Toyota Hiace taxi travelling from Kampala to Mbale collided head-on with a HOWO Sino Truck trailer travelling in the opposite direction.
Busoga East Regional Police spokesperson Michael Kasadha said the taxi driver allegedly attempted to overtake another vehicle before colliding with the oncoming trailer.
āIt is alleged that the taxi driver attempted to overtake another vehicle carelessly, resulting in a head-on collision with the oncoming trailer,ā Mr Kasadha said.
The deceased were identified as police constable Abasi Musomoki, police number 58545 PC; Ruutu Ruja Higenyi, 52, a resident of Jinja; and Ramathan Guloba, 39, a taxi conductor.
Ten other passengers sustained injuries and were taken to Iganga Hospital and other health facilities in Iganga and Mbale for treatment.
Police officers led by the Namutumba District Police Commander visited and documented the scene.
The two vehicles were towed to Namutumba Central Police Station pending inspection, while the bodies were taken to Iganga Hospital mortuary for postmortem examinations.
Mr Kasadha urged motorists to avoid reckless overtaking, particularly at night, and observe traffic signs.
