Asiedu Nkietiah Sends A Strong Warning Against Removing Two-Term President Limit

NDC National Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketiah has called for Ghana to retain the constitutional limit that restricts presidents to a maximum of two terms in office.

He described the provision as an important safeguard for Ghana’s democratic system and argued that it should not be weakened or removed through constitutional amendments.

Under Article 66 of Ghana’s 1992 Constitution, a presidential term lasts four years, and no individual may be elected president for more than two terms.

Asiedu Nketiah argued that presidential term limits can help prevent political power from becoming concentrated around a single individual while creating opportunities for new leaders and administrations to emerge.

He also maintained that the arrangement encourages political parties to develop new leadership and prepare for orderly transitions. In his view, maintaining clear limits on presidential tenure can strengthen democratic institutions and reduce the possibility of prolonged political incumbency.

Ghana has experienced several changes of government through competitive elections since the beginning of the Fourth Republic, with constitutional rules providing the framework for presidential transitions.

As discussions over possible constitutional reforms continue, Asiedu Nketiah has cautioned against changes that could weaken safeguards surrounding executive power.

His position contributes to the broader national discussion about presidential tenure, constitutional reform and the institutional arrangements underpinning Ghana’s democratic system.
