Prominent Zimbabwean businessman Sir Wicknell Chivayo has reportedly died in a helicopter crash in Marondera, Mashonaland East, yesterday.

The Zimbabwean government confirmed that a helicopter carrying a high-profile businessman, four other passengers and two pilots crashed in the area, with no survivors.

Government spokesperson and Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Information Nick Mangwana confirmed the crash in a statement issued last night but did not identify the victims.

“The Government wishes to confirm that a helicopter crash has occurred, involving one high-profile businessman, four passengers, and two pilots,” Mangwana said.

“Current information indicates that there were no survivors in this crash.”

Although the government has not yet officially named the victims, unconfirmed reports indicate that Chivayo was among those on board.

Mangwana said the Zimbabwe Republic Police would release the names of the victims once their identities had been formally confirmed.

The crash occurred yesterday afternoon in Marondera, with authorities expected to provide further details as investigations continue.
