‘We Are at a Loss of Words’: Wicknell Chivayo’s Family Speaks Out After Businessman’s Tragic Death

The family of prominent Zimbabwean businessman Wicknell Chivayo has broken its silence following the fatal helicopter crash that claimed his life and that of his wife, Lucy Muteke.

Family spokesperson Herbert Chivayo confirmed the deaths, saying relatives were struggling to come to terms with the tragedy.

“We are at a loss of words after the tragic incident,” Herbert said, according to Zimbabwean state broadcaster ZBC News.

The confirmation came after a helicopter crashed in the Marondera Rural area of Zimbabwe on Wednesday evening.

The Zimbabwe Republic Police confirmed that an aircraft had gone down in the area at around 5pm, initially stating that six people were aboard.

Police said emergency teams were attending the scene and that further details would be released.

Zimbabwean authorities later confirmed that there were no survivors in the crash. Government spokesperson Nick Mangwana said the aircraft had been carrying a high-profile businessman, other passengers and two pilots.

The identities of all those who died had not initially been released by police, with formal identification expected before the names are officially confirmed.

Chivayo and Muteke were subsequently identified by family and local reports as among the victims.

The circumstances that led to the crash remain unclear, with authorities yet to announce what caused the aircraft to go down.

Chivayo was one of Zimbabwe’s most recognisable businessmen and had built a reputation for his lavish lifestyle and high-profile public appearances.

He frequently attracted attention through displays of wealth and his interactions with prominent political and business figures.

His death has since triggered an outpouring of reactions in Zimbabwe, with attention now turning to the circumstances surrounding the crash and the identities of the other victims.

Investigations into the accident are expected to establish what happened before the helicopter went down in Marondera.
