Aussie woman killed while trying to do the right thing and rescue a kangaroo in freak accident

A passionate volunteer who dedicated her life to caring for animals has been killed while trying to rescue an injured kangaroo on a busy highway.

Jane Faulder, 60, died on September 25 after being hit by a vehicle on the Monaro Highway in NSW’s Snowy Monaro region.

Emergency services were called to the Monaro Highway, about one kilometre south of Bredbo, at about 6.30pm on Friday following reports that a pedestrian had been struck by a vehicle.

Paramedics treated Ms Faulder at the scene, but she could not be saved.

Ms Faulder is believed to have been heading home to Bredbo when she spotted an injured kangaroo on the road. Residents of the village say she tried to move the roo to prevent a collision when she was struck.

The driver of the vehicle, a 54-year-old man, was uninjured and was taken to hospital for mandatory testing.

An investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash is ongoing.

It comes as Ms Faulder’s family and friends paid tribute to the former public servant and long-time calisthenics athlete.

‘Her passion was infectious, as was her laugh, and she brought joy, friendship, warmth and a true sense of community to everyone who knew her,’ the Australian Calisthenic Federation said in a statement.

‘Jane was everyone’s champion. She was the first to lift others up, cheering on competitors from every club and celebrating their successes.

‘Away from calisthenics, Jane’s other great love was her animals. She worked tirelessly in foster and rescue work, giving countless animals the care and second chance they deserved.’

A longtime friend added: ‘Her love of calisthenics, animals and life itself always seemed to shine through, and she will be very sadly missed by so many.

‘I hope you’re up there now, Jane, dancing on the clouds, singing at the top of your lungs, surrounded by animals and still making everyone smile.’

Her local community theatre group, the Queanbeyan Players, also said its members were devastated to hear of Jane’s passing.

‘Jane was a member of the Queanbeyan Players family and was seen on stage over the last decade as an enthusiastic and much-loved member of the companies of Guys and Dolls, South Pacific and The Sound of Music,’ the group said.
